The comments by George L. Gates are appropriate to the characteristics that we sought to feature in our study and they are appreciated by the authors. In our laboratory deposition tests the smoothness of the surface seemed to be more important than the type of surface. However, we also noted that even where very smooth glass, plastic or polished metal coupons were used, scale deposition still occurred though the rate varied. Much more information is needed, however, and new work to solve the mineral scale deposition problem by mechanical and chemical means is expected to continue.

The fourth National Exposition of Chemical Industries will be held in the Grand Central Palace, New York, during the week of Sept. 23, 1918. Dr. Bacon, of the advisory committee, is now head of the Chemical Warfare Section of the National Army, and a member of General Pershing's staff. The coming Exposition will be the largest ever held, and it will be necessary to use four floors of the Grand Central Palace. The exposition is a war-time necessity, and regarding it as such, each exhibitor is planning his exhibit so that it will be of. the greatest benefit to the country.

A.. S. DWIGHT, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Henrich's paper is rather inconclusive as to the role that alumina really plays in slags. He gives a number of interesting instances of high alumina, with conclusions that he draws from the analyses, in the light of what he knows of the accompanying conditions, but the information given is hardly sufficient to permit intelligent criticism of these conclusions, for it is well known that the slag composition is not the only factor that can produce some of the furnace results favorable or disastrous, as the case may be, which he records. As a matter of fact, most metallurgists who have wrestled with this problem in connection with the smelting of lead and copper ores, usually arrived at some sort of a working hypothesis which met the local conditions fairly well, and then, being busy men, were inclined 'to leave the theoretical question very much as Mr: Henrich leaves it when he says: "A question with which I purpose dealing at some future time." It is unfortunate that in the Golden Age of the smelting industry in the West, when we were all dealing with large tonnages of complex ores, often containing large percentages of alumina in combination with other. refractory elements, the smelting companies were not generally equipped for research as they are today, and much experience that might have been,

ACCURATE knowledge of the solid solubilities of the elements that dissolve in the important base metals is needed for guidance in the preparation and heat-treatment of the alloys derived from these compo-nents. While there is still difference of opinion concerning the merits of the X-ray and microscopic methods of determining such solubilities, it is certainly true that the recent extensive use of X-ray diffraction to review the existing constitutional data has revealed many glaring inaccu-racies and has brought about a much improved knowledge of phase-boundary locations, which will inevitably come to include all of the important alloy systems. When the work is done with all necessary precautions it appears that in the majority of cases where the solubilities extend beyond a few tenths of a per cent the X-ray back-reflection technique is capable of furnishing the best of information in this field. For the most prolonged and thorough studies it is obviously advisable to combine the results of several methods, in particular, to obtain an agreement between X-ray and microscopic data. This paper reviews the work previously done on the solubilities of phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and bismuth in copper and, in considera-tion of the uncertainties thus made apparent, presents, new X-ray data obtained with the first three members of this group.

Vacuum flotation tests carried out according to the method of Schuhmann and Prakash1 have shown that the acid limiting edge of the flotation area for a Brazilian hematite, in the presence of dodecylamine, is a straight line of slope approximately unity. The flotation tests and the structure, surface ionization, and electrokinetic properties of this hematite have been fully discussed elsewhere. 2 The numbers of adsorbed H+, and OH- ions and collector molecules have been determined in the range of critical conditions defining the acid limit of the flotation area. The total amine adsorption is shown in Fig. 1 as a set of contours superimposed on the straight part of the flotation area. These were determined by spectro-photometric estimation of the complex formed between residual amine and the anionic dye Orange II.3 The ionic strength of the solutions was kept constant and at a value in sufficient excess of the amine concentration to ensure that the diffuse part of the double layer was populated predominantly by indifferent ions. Adsorption of H+ and OH- in the absence of amine was found by potentiometric acid-base titration in the presence of hematite.4 The form of the adsorption-titration curves suggested that the hematite surface behaves in an amphoteric manner, and that positively charged sites arise through loss of a hydroxyl ion, and negatively charged sites by loss of a hydrogen ion. On this basis, curves 8 and 9, shown in Fig. 2, were calculated from the titration curves. These show the variation of the numbers of positive (s +) and negative (s—) sites with pH. To distinguish between ionic and other modes of adsorption, zeta-potential determinations have also been made using the streaming potential technique. The influence of amine on the zeta-potential of the mineral over a wide pH range is shown in Fig. 3. The change in charge ?s, due to adsorption of amine ions in the Stern layer, was calculated by applying the Gouy-Chapman theory, as modified by Stem, to the results shown in Fig. 3. The validity of this treatment has been shown by Ottewill and Jaycock.5 The three full lines, Nos. (1) through (3), included in Fig. 2 show the relationship between ?s and pH at three amine concentrations. The general conclusion from the zeta-potential curves is that adsorption of amine causes a reduction in the negative charge on the surface. Comparison of the values shown in curves (1) through (3) of Fig. 2 with the - curve shows that the magnitude of the reduction is comparable with that of s - at any given

ALTHOUGH considerable information has been published concerning manganese additions to the aluminum bronzes, these data refer principally to the two-phase alloys containing 8 to 11 pct aluminum, with some incidental information on the single-phase alpha solid solution alloys. Strauss1 gives an excellent review of the literature on aluminum bronzes up to 1927 and a bulletin2 of the Copper Development Association brings the bibliography up to 1938. The most extensive work on manganese addition is that of Rosenhain and Lantsberry,3 who investigated alloys ranging up to 10 pct aluminum and up to 10 pct manganese, and presented data on the physical properties of sand-cast, chill-cast, and several wrought alloys. The greater portion of the work, however, concerns alloys ranging from 7 to 10 pct aluminum in the cast condition and sheds little light on the properties of wrought single-phase alloys. Corson4 notes that alloys containing 10 pct manganese and 4 pct aluminum are not hardenable by heat-treatment, while one with 15 pct manganese and 5 pct aluminum can be hardened, but he gives no tensile data on it. In fact, no systematic study of the properties of single-phase wrought alloys containing substantial amounts of manganese has been reported. It should also be noted that most of the investigators worked with alloys containing significant amounts of iron and silicon, and that these impurities, whether intentionally added or accrued from the raw materials used in the preparation of the alloys, may be expected to have a direct bearing on the resultant properties. In the work on alloys made with electrolytic manganese, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation of the copper-manganese-aluminum system for the purpose of establishing the constitution and properties of high-purity alloys. In a recent paper5 the authors reported a metallographic investigation of the alpha solid solution area and the adjoining fields of the copper-manganese-aluminum system up to 50 pct manganese. This study established the alpha-phase boundaries at 50° temperature levels from 400° to 850°C. It was found that the addition of manganese to copper-aluminum alloys decreases the solubility of aluminum in the alpha phase (Fig I), curving the boundary toward the copper-manganese base line. The greatest change occurs in the first 20 to 25 pct manganese, which decreases the solubility of aluminum to approximately 4 pct. With larger amounts of manganese the alpha boundary tends to parallel the copper-manganese binary. At 1300°F and higher,

The new, internationally-owned Savage River Mines iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing project, built and operated by Pickands Mather & Co. International, was dedicated March 6 at Port Latta, Tasmania, Australia. Construction of the $79 million project began in 1965 and involved an open pit mine and concentrating plant plus a complete town for about 350 employees at Savage River; a 53-mile pipeline to transport the concentrates; a pelletizing plant and shipping facilities at Port Latta, which is on Bass Strait separating Tasmania from the Australian mainland. The project has a rated capacity of 2.25 million Ltpy of high-grade magnetite pellets, which will be sold to five Japanese steel companies under 20-year contracts. The open pit mine is located in the central portion of the Savage River deposits. Mining equipment, capable of moving 10 million tpy of ore and overburden, consists of four 6-cu yd electric shovels and 12 50-ton trucks. The concentrating plant, with a design capacity of 5 million tpy of ore, will use magnetic separators to upgrade the ore, which averages 38% iron, to a concentrate averaging 67% iron.

The theory of the Askania mag-netometer, as well as a complete discussion of all factors influencing magnetometer readings, is very ably described by J. Wallace Joyce.1 We will assume that the reader is thoroughly familiar with this theory and we will use whenever possible the same notations for the physical values involved in the theory. On the other hand, we believe that the principal formulas of the magnetometer can be deduced much more easily by the use of differential calculus than by the methods employed by Joyce. Consequently, we are presenting herewith a resumé of the theory of the vertical magnetometer in order to determine the correct formula of the temperature coefficient which we propose to compensate. Short Theory of the Vertical Magnetometers We shall accept the following notations: m = total mass of the magnet system, in grams. g = acceleration of gravity, in dynes. a = projection on the axis of the magnet system of the distance between the axis of support and the center of gravity of the magnet system, in centimeters. h = projection on the perpendicular to the axis of the magnet system of the distance between the axis of support and the center of gravity of the magnet system, in centimeters. The organization of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, 75 years ago, parallels the beginning of present-day steel-producing methods in the United States. This early association with the industry is emphasized by the fact that the first open-hearth furnace constructed and operated in this country was then only three years old, and the first commercial bessemer converter was just seven years old. Total steel production in the year 1871, as recorded by the American Iron and Steel Institute, was 84,000 net tons, of which 2,000 tons was produced by the open-hearth process, 45,000 tons by the bessemer, and 37,000 tons by the crucible, puddled iron, and other processes. The bessemer process had thus become the major source of steel production. Its capacity expanded progressively during the following decade, and by 1880 was the source of approximately 86 pct of total steel production. Most of this tonnage was made in eastern Pennsylvania and used in rail manufacture. At about this time, however, important changes began to occur which gave impetus to the production of steel on a much larger scale. The development of Lake Superior ores from 1870 to 1890 and the exploitation of the Mesabi Range in 1892 provided the industry with great quantities of high-grade ores. The abundance of coking coals and limestone in the region adjoining western Pennsylvania and the development of cheap water transportation on the Great Lakes tended to shift the center of iron and steel manufacture to an area west of the Allegheny Mountains. WHEN your good secretary was kind enough to ask me to speak tonight I was rather reluctant to do so lest it be just another case of a man who has been abroad inflicting himself on his friends. So if anybody wants to walk out on me it will be perfectly all right. In the matter of statistics, geography, geology, and the like, you can get more from an encyclopaedia than I can tell you. For that reason I want to restrict myself to mentioning just a few personal impressions of that great country, Australia. About ten days ago I met the professor of mining from the University of Adelaide. In our conversation, which ran into a discussion of the relative characterstics of the two countries, he asked me whether it was fair to think of Australia as a land of strikes and not think of the United States as the home of murderers, bootleggers, and gangsters. At any rate those are the things most prominently played up in the news from the respective countries, so you can see how distorted our conceptions can be.
