Based on the belief that operating details are a definite contributing factor to major economies, this paper traces the development of crushing cavity design in Symons cone crushers to attain maximum liner utilization. Wear rates are analyzed and compared in this presentation and drawings illustrate succeeding design changes. IN these times of rising labor and material costs, it has become more and more necessary that attention be paid to some operating details which, in their obscurity, may he the key to major economies. Liner wear in crushing cavities of secondary and tertiary crushers can become an appreciable cost item when the material to be crushed is hard and abrasive. This item of cost not only includes the value of the crushing members, but also more intangible costs such as labor and lost production due to more frequent replacement. The variables which are encountered in ores and minerals to be reduced; the design of plant and machine application; the sizes, shape, and fineness, characteristics of the crushed product; the moisture; hardness; friability; and abrasiveness of the material to be crushed are all influencing factors which must be taken into consideration in the selection of a crusher, and particularly in the design of crushing cavity and liners to be used in a crusher. Through a research program undertaken in cooperation with many operators of Symons cone crushers a new approach to crusher cavity design was made, resulting in the development of liners for specific operations which showed: 1—maximum utilization, as high as 70 to 80 pct of original weight of metal, and 2— maximum capacity of unit during the greater portion of its life. It has been found that liners so designed for a given operation will show added economies in power consumption, maintenance, and general wear and tear on the crushing unit. Initial work in the so-called tailoring of crushing cavitles was begun on the tertiary or fine crushing units where as a rule reduction ratios were low, varying from 3 to 6. Parallel or sizing zones in the lower portion of the crushing cavity were too long, resulting in a tendency to pack. It was found that very little additional crushing was done in the parallel zone after the initial impact in that zone and that a relatively small amount of' additional crushing was done by attrition, which required very careful feed control. A small amount of over-feeding would result in packing which not only consumed power but caused unnecessary liner wear as well. The illustrations which follow in this discussion will show only contours of crushing cavities, and for purposes of simplification the cavities will be considered only in their closed position. The first step, therefore. was to reduce the sizing zone to a minimum. This was done by removing the lower portion of the liner as shown in Fig. 1. The result of the change was a saving of 15 to 20 pct in liner cost, less power consumption, with no change in capacity. This change in design, while an improvement, did not go far enough. As wear took place, the change in the liner was not uniform throughout its entire length, resulting in a restriction of the feed opening and thereby loss of capacity. Furthermore, progressive wear of the liner had the effect of lengthening the parallel zone until finally the entire crushing cavity was all parallel zone, see Fig. 2. It is obvious from the reduced feed opening of the worn liner that the ability of the machine to receive material is lessened considerably. Furthermore, the long parallel zone with its worn, irregular profile did not operate at its highest efficiency. The first attempt to overcome this difficulty was carried out on a 5 1/2-ft crusher installed in a plant producing roofing granules. The material being crushed was a very hard graywacke and the crusher was closed-circuited with a screen having .232-in. slotted openings. A radical change in contour was developed, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Equal wear lines on both concave and mantle are designated 1, 2, 3, etc. The method of development of this contour is as follows: Since adjustment for wear is vertical, corresponding intersections of wear lines and vertical lines developed concave and mantle contours which maintained equal but lengthening wear surfaces in the parallel zone. The ideal contour, of course, is one in which the length of the parallel zone remains constant, but because of present foundry practice and heat treating characteristics this is impossible.

THE native methods of mining and milling gold-ores in Korea may not present any specially new features, but are chiefly interesting as primitive practices, still followed at the present day. In mining where the rock is hard, wood is piled up near the face of the tunnel or drift and then set on fire. The fire bums for twenty-four hours, after which, three or four days are given for the rocks to cool, before the miners go in and extract the loosened material. The only tools in use are a hammer, a steel gad about five inches long, and a flat spoon-shaped basket. The pay-streak or chute is closely followed, and in places the workings are very small and intricate. Rock not yielding more than $6 per ton is not extracted. The manner of opening a mine is to begin on the outcrop, where the rock pays, sink a shaft or run a tunnel on the vein, and follow the pay-streak and more easily worked ore. When this is exhausted, or the influx of water interferes, the opening is abandoned and operations are begun again at a new spot on the outcrop. The place usually selected is as high up on the mountain as possible, and in no instance is advantage taken of the topography by running a cross-tunnel to tap the vein. The ore is brought in baskets to the surface, and there placed in sacks, holding about 150 1bs. each, and taken to be crushed. The rock is first crushed between two stones, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper stone is oval and rounded on the bottom, so that it can be readily rocked on the under stone. Two pieces of wood, used for handles, are placed, one on each side, in grooves in the upper stone, and held in position by means of straw rope. The lower stone is not smooth on top, but exhibits three elevations running lengthwise, with shallow depressions between them. The middle elevation acts as a fulcrum on which the upper stone may be rocked. From two to ten men, according to the weight and size of the stone used, are employed in rocking. With four men, from 300 to 350 lbs. of rock can be crushed per day, the stone making 50 complete oscillations per minute. The men squat on each side of the stone and move it to and fro by means of the wooden handles. The ore is fed, in pieces up to the size of an egg or even larger, by one of the men. AS reported several years ago,' nitrogen may be taken up from the atmosphere by austenitic Cr-Ni steels during creep or creep-rupture tests. This was indicated by chemical analysis and by the appearance of a new microstructural phase, or phases, tentatively identified as chromium nitride (S), at the surface or at the intergranular cracks associated with fracture. The nitrogen pickup was observed to be dependent on time, temperature, and deformation. In a more recent investigation, a sample was obtained in which there was sufficient of the precipitate to suggest that it could be readily identified by X-ray diffraction. This sample had been taken from a 1/4 in. diam creep-rupture specimen of annealed, type 304L stainless steel of the following initial composition: C, 0.03 pct; Mn, 0.65; P, 0.010; S, 0.019; Si, 0.54; Cr, 19.50; Ni, 12.02; N, 0.031; and Al, 0.005. The specimen had ruptured after 10,470 hr at 1500°F (2000 psi). In this case nitrides were distributed across the whole section of the sample, Fig. 1. The precipitate occurred both at the grain boundaries and within the grains; the latter precipitate had in some cases the appearance of pearl-ite, and in others was distinctly Widmanstatten. Chemical analysis of the sample after test showed 0.64 pct "soluble" nitrogen (soluble in 1:1 hydrochloric acid: water) and 0.18 pct "insoluble7' nitrogen (insoluble in the hydrochloric acid solution but dissolved by fuming sulphuric acid). For identification of the precipitate by X-ray diffraction, the matrix in the surface layer of the specimen was dissolved by prolonged attack in an alcoholic solution of picric and hydrochloric acids. The appearance of the specimen surface after such etching is shown in Fig. 1c. The diffraction pattern of the surface-concentrated precipitate was obtained with a recording spectrometer in both the forward and back-reflection regions (the latter by adapting a special fixture to the conventional X-ray unit). The observed X-ray diffraction lines, Table I, show the presence of Cr,N and CrN; the agreement with interplanar spacings calculated from reported data2,3 is quite good. Since it has been suggested' that CrN dissolves only in concentrated sulphuric acid, whereas Cr2N dissolves in dilute hydrochloric or sulphuric acids, an effort was made to distinguish between the two nitrides. This proved possible, inasmuch as etching in a dilute solution of hydrochloric acid gave a sample in which microscopic examination showed that much of the Widmanstatten-pearlitic precipitate within the grains had been eaten out, leaving the grain boundary precipitate in relief, and which, when examined by X-ray diffrac-

THE Climax district is in northeastern Lake County, Colorado, on Fremont Pass (elevation 11,320 ft.) where the continental divide runs east-west joining high peaks of the Mosquito Range with the Sawatch Range, prominent ranges of the central Rocky Mountains. The mining towns of Leadville and Kokomo are thirteen miles to the south and seven miles to the northwest, respectively. Good highways lead to Denver (100 miles) by way of Kokomo, Loveland Pass, and Idaho Springs, and to Colorado Springs by way of Leadville. The ore deposit and mine are about one mile east of Fremont Pass and 600 ft. higher on the southwestern flank of Bartlett Mountain, a peak in the Mosquito Range. The molybdenite deposit lies within the Colorado mineral belt extending across the Rocky Mountains from Jamestown and Boulder to Silverton and Telluride. (See Fig. 1.) Fremont Pass is a broad open divide separating the drainage of the Tenmile River (Pacific) from that of the East Fork of the Arkansas River (Atlantic) ; but the mountains to the east and west are extremely rugged; altitudes in the vicinity vary from 11,000 to 14,000 ft. Efficient visible light emission from p-n junctions in semiconductors is currently achieved in the four materials, Sic, GaP, ]Ga1-xAs and GaAs1-x,. Recent advances in materials preparation and p-n junction formation are briefly reviewed. The radiative recombination processes in the different materials depend largely on the band structure and the impurity states of each material. The spectral distribution of the emission ranges from the blue in Sic, to green in Gap, yellow in Sic and red in Gap, Ga1-x AlxAs and GaAs1-x Px. The origin of the various processes are discussed. The conversion of the electrical power into optical power and the measurement of the conversion efficiency are reviewed. The currently maximum quantum efficiencies at 300°K are: 3 pct in GaP(red), 1 pct in SiC(yellow), 0.1 pct in GaP(green), 0.2 pct in Ga1-x AlxAs at 66001, and 0.1 pct in GaAs1-x Px at 6800. The brightness and the interplay of the quantum efficiency and the luminous efficiency are given detailed consideration. VISIBLE light generated by the application of a direct current to a semiconductor crystal was first observed by Lossev1 in 1923. Light emission came from naturally occurring junctions in Sic crystals but little was known then with regard to the mechanism of charge transport and light emission. Some nearly 30 years later and with a vastly increased understanding of semiconductors the phenomenon of electroluminescence was studied in more detail, for example in p-n junctions of germanium.2 In these early studies, the efficiency of converting the electron current into a photon current was very low and therefore aroused little interest toward practical application. More recently it became apparent that in certain materials, for instance GaAs, and under certain conditions, the conversion efficiency was not low at all.3 The subsequent discovery of the p-n junction laser4-6 provided the impetus for increased studies of electroluminescence. Light emitted from GaAs occurs in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum and is not visible to the eye. At nearly the same time the use of GaAs1-xPx led to laser action at low temperatures which was visible to the eye.7 Later a red light emitting diode, made from Gap, was reportedS which emitted incoherent radiation at 300°K with an external quantum efficiency of about 1.5 pct. The fact that such efficient devices were obtainable led to a more concentrated effort in the search for highly efficient room-temperature semiconductor light sources. It is some of this later work on p-n junction luminescence with which we will be concerned here. Since our aim is centered on visible light, with hv =1.8 ev ( ?=7000?), only the wider band gap semiconductors are of interest, i.e., Eg 1 1.8 ev. Although many compounds meet this criterion, only a limited number of those are also good semiconductors, i.e. contain low resistance n and p regions. Some of the more promising candidates are listed in Table I. We will only be concerned with light generation from a p-n junction. This limitation excludes essentially the group II-VI binary compounds, although we will briefly review the case of ZnTe and the solid solution ZnTe1-xSex. As we will show they may contain a p-n junction but only of a special kind. Most of the discussion will deal with the four materials, Sic, Gap, Gal-xAlxAs, and GaAs1-xPx. These appear to be at the present time the best visible light emitting semiconductors. In the following sections we will briefly consider: 1) the electrical properties of p-n junctions; 2) some recent advances in materials preparation; 3) the formation of p-n junctions; and then in somewhat greater detail we will consider: 4) the various radiative recombination processes; 5) the measurement and observation of the external quantum efficiency; 6) the luminous efficiency; 7) the brightness of light emitting diodes (LED'S). THE P-N JUNCTION The p-n junction in a semiconductor crystal is the interface between two differently doped regions. More specifically the p region is doped predominantly with acceptor impurities and the n region contains predominantly donor impurities. The energy band structure of a degenerate p-n junction at thermal equilibrium is shown in Fig. l(a). The excess electrons on the n side of the junction are confined to this region by the barrier potential Eg. Similarly the excess holes on the p-side of the junction are confined to the p-region by a similar potential barrier. If we now apply a dc voltage V such that the p region is made positive and the n region negative, the barrier potential EB is reduced by the applied voltage, V and the junction is said to be forward biased. With the barrier potential lowered, electrons and holes can drift toward the p region and n region, respectively, see Fig. l(b). The current voltage characteristics of p-n junctions in most wide band gap materials can be described by the relation: J = Joexp(eV/BkT) [1] where the functional form of Jo is determined by the recombination mechanism. Jo is generally a complicated parameter which depends on a number of different factors including temperature, junction width, bias voltage, and carrier lifetimes. Laboratory water floods were performed in oil-wet and waterwet alundum and Torpedo cores, displacing a refined oil with n-hexylamine or Triton X-100 solution. Also, some floods were performed in which a sucrose solution was displaced with n-butyl alcohol. The Purpose ot the tests was to see if the oil recotlery could be increased and to examine what role the inter-facial tension reduction and wettability change play in the recovery mechanism. it was found that the chromatographic transport of amine was influenced by core wettability. In oil-wet cores, the rate of advance of the amine band could be predicted from equilibrium chromato-graphy, while in water-wet cores the amine band moved faster than predicted, indicating a non-equilibrium process. By reducing the interfacial tension to 1.1 dyne/ cm, oil recovery was increased. More oil was recovered from Dri-filmed cores than from water-wet cores. Reversing the wettability of the porous media from oil-wet condition also resulted in some additional oil recovery. Neutral wettability floods did not increase oil recovery. INTRODUCTION Interfacial forces in petroleum reservoirs are responsible for retention of large quantities of residual oil. Increasing exploration costs have created an incentive to attempt recovery of this residual oil by new and novel processes. One novel process involves changing the interfacial forces by introducing a chemical into the reservoir during water flooding. Recently, several investigators have carried out laboratory displacement tests using amines. lt3.4 The amines adsorbed onto initially water-wet core surfaces, changing them to oil wet. Additional oil was recovered when the cores were flooded in a manner reversing the. wettability from oil-wet conditions. In all these studies, the wettability reversal was considered responsible for increased oil recoveries although it was noted that amines also reduced oil-water interfacial tension. In the present study, displacement experiments were performed in water-wet and Dri-filmed cores. The purpose was to separate the effects of lowering the interfacial tension from changing the wettability. LABORATORY STUDY All experimental data given in this paper have been obtained at a temperature of 70F + 1 and prevailing atmospheric pressure. FLUIDS AND MATERIALS The oil used in these experiments* was washed with H2S04 and passed through two 100-200 mesh silica-gel beds to remove unsaturates and surface active impurities. Normal hexylamine** of practical purity was used, and the alundum cores*** were composed of nearly pure A1203. Fused quartz (SiOi) and Lucalox (A12 )t plates were used in the contact angle measurements. DISPLACEMENT TESTS Displacement tests were performed in alundum and Torpedo cores. Before displacement runs, cores were acidized with 0.1 normal HCI, flushed with distilled water and fired at 1,200F to make them water wet. This procedure also reduced water sensitivity of the Torpedo cores. Oil-wet cores were prepared from water-wet cores by flowing several pore volumes of 1 per cent by weight Dri-film SC-87 solution in heptane through the cores, flushing the cores with nitrogen, evacuating, and finally heating the cores at 300F for 4 or 5 hours. Between floods, cores were cleaned by conventional procedures and treated again as above.

The School of Mineral Industries is dedicated to education in mineral conservation and research by which the means may be found to make conservation effective. This includes diligent search for mineral truths and the energetic discovery, complete recovery, and maximum utilization of irreplaceable mineral resources. Standards of living depend upon two factors: human resources-intelligence, imagination, initiative, know-how, work; and natural resources-plants, animals, and minerals, including water, air, soil, heat and light from the sun, and all other such resources that are useful to man. Human relationships have not kept pace with scientific achievement; as a result man, in desperation, wittingly, premeditatively sacrifices freedom for security. Many natural resources, through overproduction, mismanagement, and greed, have definitely moved over into the exhausted or exhaustible category. The United States cannot maintain present standards of living on an agricultural economy alone, and serious harm can ensue if there are marked disproportions in numbers and relationships between city and rural populations. The most materialistic New Yorker must see virtue in bucolic loveliness. The United States is rated wasteful and inconsistent most of the time. It does not make sense to dole out through the keyhole what a wage earner can bring through the open door; to raise wages to lower the cost

An investigation of trends in exploration expenditures for a selected group of mining companies was undertaken for the interval 1968-1971. These trends were compared with financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and the implications of these trends are indicated. The sample consists of 21 mining companies, of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the ex- traction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining, such as oil and gas sales. No companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in the sample. This definition held up in 1968, however, its strict application became more difficult through the years. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business and deriving a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining.

There has been no noteworthy increase in production during 1935; but, on the other hand, there have been ample manifestations of a considerable increase in interest and activity in connection with petroleum prospecting. The Lakes Entrance field, in the State of Victoria, on the coast some 120 miles east of Melbourne, remains the only actual producer; and this production, consisting of lubricating stock devoid of light fractions, is very small in amount. Arrangements have been completed under which a series of "scout bores" for structure testing in the region of Lakes Entrance will be sunk by the Government of the State of Victoria, assisted by a subsidy from the Federal Government. Prospecting In the State of New South Wales, brilliant geological research in very difficult country, carried out by geologists of Oil Search Ltd., has revealed several previously unsuspected domal structures in the Sydney-Newcastle coal basin. These have been mapped in detail, and a test well is being sunk at Kulnura, 10 miles west of Wyong and 40 miles north of Sydney. At the date of writing this well has reached a depth of 1250 ft., 10-in. casing having been set at 1248 feet. Superficial formations consist of the Hawkesbury sandstone and Narrabeen beds of the Hawkes-bury system (fresh-water Triassic). It is anticipated that the upper coal measures of the Kamilaroi (Permo-Carboniferous) will be entered almost immediately. The objectives of the drilling are the upper and lower marine beds of the Kamilaroi system, which are regarded as promising as potential source—and reservoir—beds for oil. At Mulgoa, 30 miles west of Sydney, a bore is being sunk by the same company, Oil Search Ltd., to test for natural gas on a well defined structure located by the company's geologists. Noteworthy flows of gas have been encountered, but nothing approaching a commercial supply has been struck. It is considered probable that the gas has been derived

The management of The Union Pacific Coal Co., which operates a group of coal mines in Southern Wyoming, believes in the value of applied psychology as a productive factor in the work of getting out coal. Operating almost wholly through the medium of mechanical loading machinery, the company has for some years paid a bonus, equivalent to one-half the labor saving made above a determined average output per shift worked, on a given machine. No penalty is attached where the established output is not obtained, but in 1933 the men on one class of machines earned an average premium of $0.633 per shift on 56.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded. On another class of machine, the men earned an average premium of $0.686 per shift on 28.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded An increase of 36 per cent in tons loaded per man-shift has resulted since the program was instituted. This coal company has also been very successful in reducing mine accidents through prizes awarded in an unusual way. At the close of the year, every man whose particular mine section passes through the year without a lost-time accident is given a ticket entitling him to participate in a safety drawing where an automobile is awarded as first prim.. There are also a number of cash safety prizes which are similarly awarded. Some 1500 persons attend the drawing, which excites much interest and attention. The particular plan employed, the payment of production bonus awards and safety prizes, is foundationed upon collective. rather than individual effort, and, once gotten under way, has proved to be substantlally self-cnforcing.

HE relationship between microstructure and *- fracture is of interest in many metals and alloys. This relationship is sometimes established by examining the fracture surfaces and the flat surfaces near the fracture path in tensile samples. However, it is often difficult to tell from examining the fractured sample whether the fracture is intergranular, intra-granular, or a mixture of both. Also, it is often of interest to follow the progress of slip, twinning, or crack formation along the fracture path before fracture occurs. HenRy Clay FRick, a pioneer in modern coke and steel industry and, in more recent years, one of the outstanding financiers of America, died on Dec. 2, 1919, at his home on Fifth Avenue, New York. Although he had been ill since election day, when he had an attack of indigestion which developed into ptomaine poisoning, his death was a surprise to all. He is survived by his widow, Adelaide Howard Childs Frick; a son, Childs Frick, one unmarried daughter, Helen C. Frick, and four grandchildren. A quiet funeral service was conducted at the Frick home on Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. Dr. Leighton Parks, pastor of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. This was attended by members and very intimate friends of the family, Trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Officers of the Links Club, and Directors of the United States Steel Corpn. Frick, was a farmer of Swiss ancestG, and his mother, Elizabeth Overholt Frick, a member of an old Mennonite family. Until he was sixteen, he spent his time at school, on his father's farm, and in his grandfather's distillery, where he kept books. He attended Otterbein University, in Ohio, for a year. Frick, learning that coke was an essential of the already rapidly developing steel business, early invested every cent he could get in coking-coal lands. With the help of an associate of his grandfather, he formed the corporation of Frick & Co., coke dealers, and acquired fifty-one ovens in the Connellsville region and 300 acres of soft-coal lands. During the panic of '73, with the help of Judge Thomas Mellon, a Pittsburgh 'banker, he bought out his partners and while coke was selling at 90 cents a ton enlarged his purchases of suitable lands. Later, the price of coke increased until it was selling at $5 a ton. Before he was 30 years old, Frick was rated a millionaire. Association with CaRnegie In 1878, he sold an interest in the business Do E. M. Ferguson of New York, and later a share to Mr. Ferguson's brother. Four years later the business was reorganized into the H. C. Frick Coke Co. with vast coal lands, great banks of ovens, and a capitalization of $2,000,000. Most mining engineers and metallurgists who get out of school usually wind up working for a large or medium-sized company and are seldom heard of again. The enterprising few who decide to go into business for themselves soon discover that while they can adequately tackle the various technical problems involved in developing a new ore body, they know little about putting together a feasibility study-and even less about financing their project. If you are in that predicament, you'll probably tend to view the financing problem as insurmountable, especially when the economy is in a slump, capital is scarce or seemingly non-existent, the equity market is in the doldrums, labor and equipment costs keep going up relentlessly-and, to make things worse, you must operate within the competitive context created by large mining firms that seem to have in abundance all the capital and managerial expertise you feel you lack. Flotation, as we know it today, is a physiochemical method of concentrating finely ground ores. The process involves chemical treatment of an ore pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of certain mineral particles to air bubbles which are carried to the surface of the ore pulp for removal. Frother reagents, combined with air and the agitation mechanism, produce the effective bubbles in a flotation cell. A method of analysis is presented to evaluate the effect of frother reductions and additions on a bank of flotation cells, and to economically determine if and to what extent frother reductions and additions are justified. Comparative evaluations of different frother systems, as well as the amount of frother used in a given flotation machine, cannot be made on the frother cost alone. An indepth study must be made to evaluate any given frother as applied to a particular ore body. The recovery of a given mineral is as dependent on the amount of frother as on the type of frother used. An actual case study follows in which the amount of frother required by two different flotation machines was used to make a decision as to which unit performed more efficiently based on costs. This same method may be used to evaluate new frothers as well as to determine if a larger frother addition is advisable.
