THE work herein reported is restricted to the carbides which occur in quenched and tempered AISI 43XX steels with carbon contents up to 0.40 pct and silicon additions of up to 3 pct. In view of the instability and extremely small size of the carbides formed at low tempering temperatures, the technique for successfully preparing specimens for X-ray diffraction will be outlined. The alloys listed in Table I were obtained through the courtesy of the United States Steel Corp. in the form of 1/2-in. rounds forged from 100 lb. induction furnace heats (except for 4337 which was a commercial heat). The stock was normalized and then swaged and drawn to 15 mil wire with anneals at 1200F between passes. The wire was austenitized for 45 min in evacuated vycor capsules and quenched into iced brine with simultaneous smashing of the capsule. Tempering was done in air with a water quench after tempering. The carbides were extracted in a simple cell using a solution of 1M KC1 and 0.5 pct citric acid with an initial current density of 0.1 amp per sq cm. One end of a short length of wire was immersed in the solution, and the current at constant voltage was noted as a function of time. After about an hour the current dropped sharply because of the decrease in specimen cross-section. At this point it was found that the dissolution could be stopped and that the very fine wire which then resulted was just large enough to permit handling of the extracted precipitate still clinging to it, yet so small that it diffracted and absorbed only a negligible amount of the X-radiation. This rod of residue with a convenient handle of undissolved wire was rinsed in distilled water. alcohol, and acetone. Then it was dipped in a thin solution of cellulose-acetate cement and dried in vacuum. The resulting specimen was straight, uniform in density, easily handled, but most important, was completely sealed and never exposed to air. Furthermore, the residue had never been subjected to strong acids or rough handling such as in the extraction-replica technique or in the complete extraction to a powdered residue. It was found that improperly coated specimens were pyrophoric, turning to oxide with a dull red glow as they were exposed to air and yielding patterns of Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. The steels containing 3 pct Si were especially difficult to prepare for this reason. The specimens were put in a 57 mm Straumanis camera with double pinholes or slits and irradiated with filtered-chromium radiation. Readable patterns were obtained in less than an hour. A preliminary finding of some note was that for both tempered and as-quenched specimens of steels 4337 and 4337 (1.5 Si). M23C6 patterns were found along with the patterns of other constituents of the residues. This result was somewhat surprising in that previous investigators had reported that this carbide did not appear in a 0.38 pct C, 0.48 pct Mo steel1 or in chromium steels of less than about 10 pct Cr.2 Although the total amount of carbide-forming alloying elements is less than 2 pct, due to their mutual interaction and the action of the plastic deformation in promoting equilibrium, this carbide was able to form even in the steel containing 1.5 pct Si. M23C6 was not detected in the 4337 (3.0 Si) steel and the lower-carbon steels were not investigated in this condition. It is very likely then that the steels studied herein underwent a fourth stage of tempering during the anneals at 1200°F. This result has significance in that even a small amount of undissolved M23C6 in a low-carbon, low-alloy steel would exert a large effect on its hardenability. Its presence would also influence the mechanical properties by decreasing the carbon content of the matrix. Annealing in vacuum for 1 to 4 hr in the austenite field removed all traces of MZ3C+ The results on carbide precipitation during tempering, summarized in Table I, are in agreement with those of Klingler et al.3 for the higher carbon steels. For the AISI 4337 steels it is noteworthy that in the steels with added silicon the E carbide persists to longer times and higher temperatures and that silicon delays the formation of cementite. The results for the lowzr-carbon steels parallel those of the higher-carbon grade. The appearance of E carbide in the AISI 4315 is significant. There is considerable disagreem-nt in the literature as to whether this carbide forms in the tempering of steels containing less than about 0.2 pct C. Following the detection of E carbide in a 0.18 pct C plain-carbon steel,4 its occurrence in a steel containing chromium and molybdenum should be expected. The fact that the low-carbon steels have the same carbide-precipitation sequence as the high-carbon steels has bearing on the larger problem of the exact tempering reactions in all steels. Following the suggestion of Roberts et al.,' the first stage has been generally assumed to result in a metastable equilibrium of c carbide and martensite of about 0.25 pct C. From this it was concluded that a steel having less than 0.25 pct C should then be under-saturated with respect to c carbide and should not precipitate this carbide upon tempering. THE need for a practical method of deciding upon new alloy steel analyses to widen its markets was the problem facing the Chrome Steel Works at the beginning of 1927. In addition to determining the physical properties of the alloys under consideration, it was necessary to test their value in service. Small melts of steel in a crucible, from which test specimens could be made, were insufficient to determine more than physical properties, therefore actual castings and ingots had to be made before the products could be placed in service. Furthermore, to save further experimental work, it was desirable that these heats should be made on a "pilot" basis; that is, actually duplicating regular open-hearth furnace practice. Therefore a one-ton (2000-lb.) acid open-hearth furnace was built. FURNACE DESIGN There are no special features in the design of this furnace. Standard acid open-hearth practice is followed, with the reproportioning of the dimensions necessitated by its small size; notably, a considerably increased length in proportion to width in order to get proper flame propagation. After the first heat was made it was found that the checkers were insufficient. The checker chambers were increased in size and the checker openings were made much smaller. The furnace was started late in March, 1927, and made 65 heats. Experimental work was then stopped until the data accumulated could be worked up and summarized. The run was resumed in November and the furnace is still operating, having made at this writing 60 additional heats. For the last series of runs, there was some rebuilding of both the furnace itself and the checkers. Slag pockets were added. Fig. 1 shows details of construction; Fig. 2, the, general appearance. All designing was done by the operating and engineering staff. Construction materials were those available around the plant. The reversing valve is a standard butterfly type taken from an old furnace.

Five water-driver fields, for which pressure predictions had been made within a few years after discovery, were re-studied when four to five years of additional pressure and production data became available. It was fortnd that forecasts of the pressure in water-dri~fe reservoirs may be subject to considerable unccrtainty. Predictions car be erroneous when there is insufficient presswe history to define the cllaracteristics of the aquifer, and when there are errors in the pressure, production or geologic data. INTRODUCTION The efficient operation of an oil or gas reservoir requires that the important characteristics of the reservoir be determined soon after its discovery. It is especially desirable to evaluate the pressure-production relationship quickly, for this relationship provides a basis for deducing the type of production mechanism that is operative, and for making pressure predictions. The pressure predictions, in turn, provide a basis for calculating efficient rates of production, determining whether water or gas should be injected, etc. The importance of pressure prediction is such that forecasts should be made as accurate as possible, and the limits of error well defined. Historically, pressure forecasts for some fields have proved very accurate, while for others the forecasts were so erroneous that they resulted in the adoption of wrong, or at best, unnecessary production practices. Pressure predictions made for water-drive fields are especially subject to error. Accurate forecasting for these fields requires that much be known not only about the reservoir proper but about the adjacent water-filled rock as well. The water-containing rock, or aquifer, may extend for many miles, and often there is only meager data regarding its thickness, permeability and porosity. Much of the information must be inferred from the previous pressure behavior of the reservoir. A brief pressure history may provide little information about the characteristics of the aquifer. Hence, pressure predictions made early in the life of water-drive fields can be incorrect. The work described in this paper was done to determine the degree of reliability which can be expected of pressure predictions made within a few years after water-drive fields are discovered. Five fields, for which the original pressure predictions had been based on less than seven years' history, were re-examined with the aid of four to five years of additional pressure data. Where the predictions were inaccurate, the reasons for failure were ascertained. The studies were accomplished by use of the electric reservoir analyzer.' The analyzer was first adjusted to repeat the original pressure-production match using the same values for the various parameters as were used in the original study. Then, the actual production rates experienced during the time elapsed since the initial study were set into the analyzer, and the pressure behavior indicated by the machine for this period was compared with that which actually OCcurred. Where the pressure profile traced out by the analyzer deviated from the observed field behavior, the analyzer was readjusted to obtain a better over-all match. The old and the new solutions were compared to determine the reasons for any differences. COMPARISON OF PREDICTED RESERVOIR PRESSURE BEHAVIOR WITH ACTUAL PERFORMANCE Field A The original pressure-production match is entirely adequate as evidenced by the pressure match of the field's history subsequent to Jan., 1952 (see Fig. 1)'.

THE Pernot system of rotating and withdrawing the hearth of a Siemens regenerative gas furnace for the production of Martin or open-hearth steel, is, perhaps, the most conspicuous of the several improvements which have lately been made in the steel manufacture. These several improvements in the open-hearth plant are not combined in any existing works, but most of them will be combined in not less than three works now erecting in the United States; and it seems probable that their joint result will not only reduce the cost of products of ordinary grades to Bessemer rates, but that it will produce new and better grades of products. The open-hearth steel furnace and its operation are so generally understood that but a few words of general description are necessary. The ordinary furnace is not unlike the common reverberatory puddling furnace, except that an intense, uniform, and controllable temperature is maintained by the Siemens gas regenerative system. The materials. employed are various : melted or unmelted pig with ore, and with or without scrap; pig iron purified from silicon and phosphorus, with or without scrap; pig iron and scrap, melted together in a cupola, or charged hot or cold, together or separately, into the steel furnace; a pig-iron bath, and hot or cold steel or iron scrap, direct sponge or Catalan or puddled blooms charged into the bath. The operation is, to a greater or less extent, according to the nature of the materials used, a desiliconization and decarburization of the pig or other crude iron, and its dilution by already purified materials. Manganese is employed at the end of the operation to remove oxide of iron and silica, a regulated amount of manganese remaining in the product. THERMAL conductivities of several samples of uranium and uranium alloys were determined using an apparatus previously described.' The value previously reported for uranium,' 0.035 cal per sec per cm per "C at 70°C, is in error due to the failure of a thermocouple during the determination on uranium. The defective thermocouple was detected after a reanalysis of the data obtained during the run and since has been replaced. Subsequently, runs on several samples of uranium show the thermal conductivity of uranium to be 0.069 cal per sec per cm per 'C at 70°C. The accuracy of the determinations was checked by measuring a sample of synthetic sapphire whose thermal conductivity was previously reported and found to be in agreement with other values."-" The values given in Table I are believed correct to % 3 pct or 0.003 cal per sec per cm per "C, whichever is larger. The solubility of aluminum in cryolite melts has been determined by measuring the weight loss of aluminum submerged in melts contained in closed silicon nitride crucibles. The solubility in pure cryolite has also been checked with radioactive isotopes. The solubility decreases with increasing A1203 concentration, decreasing temperature, and decreasing cryolite ratio. The change of aluminum solubility in pure cryolite with the activity controlled by using Al-Ag and A2-Cu alloys supported the assumption that aluminum would dissolve in the form of monovalent ions according to the reaction 2AI + A1' —3 A1'. DURING the electrolytic production of aluminum, the electrodeposited metal redissolves in the bath in some form and is subsequently oxidized back to the former ionic state. This dissolution is believed to cause a decrease in current efficiency. Reported data on the solubility of aluminum in cryolite melts are scattered. The mechanism of the dissolution has not yet been determined, although certain tentative interpretations have been proposed. Many previous studies were performed under different test conditions. Studies were performed in open Systems and closed systems,'o and some were apparently not given sufficient time to Saturate." The solubility can be determined either analytically or gravimetrically. The analytical determination involves measurement of hydrogen gas evolved when frozen cryolite bath saturated with aluminum is treated with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid. The gravimetric determination, adopted by many investigators,'-37'3>14 involves measurement of weight loss of the metal after equilibration with a known amount of salt. It appears that the former technique yields much smaller values of solubility than the latter technique. This large difference in results strongly suggests that the dissolved metal in the cryolite melt is no longer in the metallic state. In the present study, the solubility was determined by the gravimetric technique at various activities of aluminum using A1-Ag and Al-Cu alloys. An attempt was also made to determine the ionic (or atomic) state of the dissolved metal from the solubility data. 1) EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. Preliminary tests demonstrated that silicon nitride was suitable as a container material since it is compatible to both the fluoride melts and molten aluminum. Crucibles were made from silicon powder nitrided with Nz gas at 1600°C. The good compatibility between crucible and melts is due to the near perfect nitrogenation of silicon. Only small amounts of silicon were found in the aluminum metal after the experiments. The crucible dimensions were 90 mm inside height, 38 mm ID, 105 mm outside height, and 50 mm OD. Close-fitting lids made of silicon nitride were also prepared. The crucible was placed in a close-fitting graphite crucible heated by a vertical Kanthal furnace, Fig. l. The lid and crucible are fastened tightly together by the condensation of vaporized bath in the narrow gap between them. The temperature was measured in the wall of the graphite crucible and controlled within * 5°C. The temperature difference between the measuring point and the interior of the melts was initially determined. Materials. The materials used were: Greenland cryolite (impurities CaF,, 0.5 pct; AlzO3, 0.2 pct; high-purity aluminum metal (purity 99.99 pct); A1203 and AlF, (provided by Nippon Light Metal Co., Ltd); reagent-grade NaF and CaF2; and 99.9+ pct Ag and Cu. THE term oil property, in this discussion, includes any type of easement or grant under which petroleum might be produced; it ranges from the mere right to drill on undeveloped wildcat acreage up to a fully developed oil property. The values of an oil property, as thus defined, vary widely according to the use for which it is intended, whether it is from the viewpoint of the speculator, the fraudulent stock promoter, the refiner and pipe-line owner, or the oil producer. The market value of a property is usually a combination of some two or more of these influences, and occasionally a combination of all of them, but we prefer to treat each viewpoint as distinct from the others, allowing the reader to make his own combination in such proportions as his inclination and property seem to require. This paper will treat the subject from the viewpoint of the oil producer. However, the other influences have such bearing on the cost of property to the producer and on the price he might obtain by its sale as to warrant brief discussion of them. Speculation, particularly lease speculation, is a parasitic growth on the oil industry, healthy enough, but of no economic value. The class of property usually dealt in for this purpose is the undeveloped lease. Its speculative value may have some relation to its probable productive value, but most frequently this value is the product of temporary excitement due to local development. The lease speculator, seeking out the trend of development or securing early information regarding a proposed test or a new discovery, immediately secures leases whose market value will be increased when the existence of such development becomes more widely known. His profits are purely unearned increment. Not proposing to spend money in exploration, he can afford to compete in purchase with the operator, who, in addition to bonus paid, must spend large sums in testing out his own acreage and that of the nearby speculator as well. It has a tendency to compel unduly high bonuses.

J. W. Tomlison—It seems probable that the author's conclusion, that the conductivity of the slags decreases with increasing content of FeO, is erroneous due to the method of plotting the data. Thus, the results of other workers2,3,13,14 show that the conductivity of molten oxide slags increase with increasing temperature, indicating that the trend of the curve shown by the authors is due to the fact that the data for the slags containing relatively small amounts of FeO are at higher temperatures than those for the slags containing relatively large amounts of this oxide. In this connection the work of Wejnarth2 may be mentioned in which in an investigation of a series of iron silicate slags, the conductivity was found to increase with increasing content of FeO; the fact that the author's slags contained TiO2 probably does not affect the issue since it has been shown15,16 that, at least as far as conductivity is concerned, this oxide behaves essentially the same as silica and that mixtures of the oxide with silica have a very low conductivity of the order of 10-4 mhos at 1750°C. In connection with the experimental technique it may be noted that bubbles of carbon monoxide would probably be produced at the surface of the graphite electrodes in contact with the melts thus rendering the accuracy of the measurements somewhat open to question. J. L. Wyatt (author's reply)—Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to works by Martin and Derge, which indicate that slag systems containing no TiO2 are charac-terized by an increase in conductivity with an increase in temperature. Further, I have cited his examples, which indicate a drastic increase with small temperature change. The results of Dr. Derge's work have no bearing whatsoever on the results of this paper, since the slags under study here contained up to 70 pct TiO2. One cannot generalize on slag systems as a whole on the basis of any one family, for there are definite compounds of ionic nature formed in each system, and the ionic mobilization of these is something that cannot be determined without actual experimentation. Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to an unpublished work which, he claims, shows that titanium dioxide behaves the same as silica in regard to conductivity. Since I have not had 'an opportunity to see the paper I cannot make any comments, but unless the same slag system was studied there can be no specific comparison of results. If the decrease in conductivity of the slag was due entirely to temperature phenomena, as Dr. Tomlinson indicates, then one is without an explanation of the values shown in the paper for slags containing from 10 to 20 pct FeO. I cannot agree that the deviation in findings was appreciably related to temperature change; further, I believe this point was completely covered in the paper. The property of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co., covering the Juneau gold belt for over a mile in length, consists of 136 claims and 24 mill sites; these are near Juneau, Alaska, in what is known as the Harris mining district. Gold was discovered in the district in 1880, by Richard T. Harris and Joseph Juneau, who had been prompted to explore the section by rumors they had heard among the Indians. Gold was first found on the beach at the mouth of Gold Creek and further search revealed the lode deposits in the Silver Bow basin, about two miles inland. The lode locations made immediately thereafter constitute the principal area of the Alaska Juneau group of claims. Gradually news of the strike spread and, during the late eighties, Silver Bow basin became a substantial producer of gold, both from placer work and from quartz milling. Numerous small mills of various types were erected to crush high-grade float and stringers gouged to shallow depths. Placer mining gradually ceased and the pioneer milling operations gave way to larger and better mills, which in time were the predecessors of the two large mills built by the Alaska Gastineau Co. and the Alaska Juneau Co. on the shores of Gastineau Channel. This evolution from arrastres to small mechanical mills, thence to the two large-capacity mills on Gastineau Channel, although a natural sequence of events, had a most important bearing on the development of the district. Knowledge of the character, extent, and value of the ore deposits gained by these early operations could not have been acquired otherwise. Spencer shows1 that the early mills were: Arrastres in 1881-82-83-84-85-86-88; a 5-stamp mill in 1882; a "newly devised grinding mill" in 1884; two Huntington mills in 1886; a 10-stamp mill in 1889; a revolving Dodge mill in 1890; a 5-stamp mill in 1891; and a 20-stamp mill in 1893. THROUGH the courtesy of the Southern Appala-chian Coal Operators' Association, a joint meeting of the Southern Appalachian Efficiency Associa-tion and local members of the A. I. M. E. and A. S. M. E. was held at Knoxville, Tenn., on Nov. 12. In introduc-ing the subject and stating the object of the meeting, H. Foster Bain, speaking for the. Institute members, said "Shoveling coal is the largest job of hand labor re-maining in this country, with the exception of the mis-cellaneous work on the farms, and even there nearly all the big jobs are now performed with the help of machines. The men in the coal mines, by hand labor, dig, each year, more cubic yards than were taken out of the Panama Canal. It has been a natural ambition of engineers, operators and men alike to follow here the characteristic lead of American industry and to substi-tute as far as possible the work of machines for the work of men; to promote the latter to the position of con-trolling and directing mechanical power rather than being themselves the machines that lift the coal from the floor of the room into the mine car. "Handling materials is one of the regular jobs of mechanical engineers, and the American Society of Me-chanical Engineers maintains a Materials Handling Division for discussion of the technical problems con-cerned. Having in mind the excellent results that had flowed from application of mechanical power and de-vices to these problems in factories, port terminals, warehouses, and other above-ground plants, the Me-chanical Engineers began to consider the possibility of introducing similar methods underground. Individual-ly, many were called upon to design, erect and operate machines for such use and at once they found them-selves faced by many novel conditions and difficulties. The Division thereupon planned a general meeting in New York in March, 1926, for consideration of problems and progress in this field. A. J. SHALER*—I should like to congratulate the authors for having carried out such a precise set of experiments. It has been found useful, in sintering experimental compacts in vacuo, to make certain that the residual gas is not one which reacts with the metal. Since traces of oxygen can be kept away only with great difficulty, the technique is often adopted of using a "getter " of powder in the vicinity of the compacts, and, in addition, of permitting a small hydrogen leak to flow into the vacuum chamber. Did the authors use similar devices? This paper brings up a question concerning the definition of the word ' sintering.' The authors restrict its use to the adhesion between particles. Kuczynski, in a paper presented at this meeting, applies the word to the growth of areas of contact between particles. I have used it to mean both these phenomena and also the dimensional changes which continue to take place after the first two have run their course. May I suggest that we should come to an agreement on the use of these words ? Fig 1 and 2 show an interesting feature: extrapolation of the curves to zero time does not give a densification parameter of zero. The higher the temperature, the higher is the intercept on that axis. These observations agree with the concept of a practically instantaneous densification taking place while the compact is being brought to heat. Such a change may be brought about by plastic deformation and primary creep. The stress pattern causing this first rapid flow is, to my mind, due to the force of attraction between the surfaces of opposite particles in the regions immediately flanking their common areas of contact. The stress is not temperature-sensitive, but at room temperature plastic deformation only proceeds until the metal in the area of contact can support it elastically. As the metal is heated, the elastic limit falls, and further plastic flow occurs. At the higher temperatures, this is followed by primary creep, and finally by the steady-state rate-reaction which the authors are seeking. If they were to recalculate their densification-parameter values, using, not the initial density of the cold compact, but the density after the compacts have been brought to temperature, the systematic deviations from linearity in Fig 3 and 4 might be eliminated. Such initial densities might be obtained by extrapolating the curves of Fig 1 and 2 to zero time. I am naturally pleased to see that such a very well done series of experiments leads to a heat of activation (for the densification process in hydrogen) that is much higher than that for self-diffusion, in confirmation of the less elaborate results reported by Wulff and myself (Ind. and Eng. Chem., (1948) 40, 838). J. T. KEMP*—I would like to comment on Dr. Shaler's remarks. There are apparently different interpretations of the word "sintering." It seems to me that an accurate definition of our word is essential in all metallurgy. May I point out, in this connection, that in practical metallurgy the word "sintering" has been applied to a bonding process in the preparation of ores and flue dust for fur-nacing. It would be unfortunate if in the area of powdered metallurgy we should establish a definition that is essentially different in meaning. F. N. RHINES*—I think that I can answer the question by saying that I see no essential difference between the use of the term "sintering" in extractive metallurgy and in powder metallurgy; physically the same things are going on. I admit sintering is used for different end purposes in the two cases. When we resort to the sintering of lead ore mixture we are doing so to obtain a chemically reactive, loose texture of some rigidity. This is only a difference in use. After all, in powder metallurgy we sometimes deliberately produce a very porous material which has just a little strength, just as in the case of sinter cake. P. DUWEZ (authors' reply)—We agree that it would be helpful to have well-established definitions of such terms as "sintering." Since the question has now been raised, the time might be appropriate for its consideration by some suitable committee of one or more of the metallurgical societies. In answer to Dr. Shaler's first question, no getter nor hydrogen leak was used in our vacuum experiments, except insofar as the guard disks (used to reduce friction between specimens and trays) may have acted as getters. Introduction Estimates performed on potential future plants must by their very nature be either order-of-magnitude or budget (preliminary) estimates. Of the three types of estimates recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Standard Z94.2), order-of-magnitude and budget estimates are the least accurate. Order-of-magnitude estimates have an expected accuracy of plus 50 percent to minus 30 percent. In other words, it is anticipated that actual project cost will be no more than 50 percent above the estimate and no less than 30 percent below the estimate. Budget estimates, or preliminary estimates as they are often called, have an expected accuracy of plus 30 percent to minus 15 percent. The reason that greater accuracy cannot be expected in performing estimates on proposed new facilities is simply that insufficient data is generally available to permit performance of a highly accurate estimate. As stated in ANSI Standard Z94.2, a definitive estimate, i.e., an estimate with an expected accuracy of plus 15 percent to minus 5 percent," . . is an estimate prepared from very defined engineering data . . . (including). . .as a minimum, fairly complete plot plans and elevations, piping and instrument diagrams, one line electrical diagrams, equipment data sheets and quotations, structural sketches, soil data and sketches of major foundations, building sketches and a complete set of specifications." In other words, the engineering of the project must be fairly well underway to permit a definitive estimate to be performed. Such is the case only after the construction decision has been made, all potential alternatives evaluated, and major expenditures committed for a particular course of action. This situation is beyond the scope of this chapter. The chapter is directed to comparison of various technological alternatives for which site specific engineering data is not generally available. Accordingly, such comparisons can be made only by utilizing preliminary or order-of-magnitude estimating techniques.

The estimated product of iron-ore in 1888 throughout the world was, in round numbers, 50,000,000 gross tons, of which the United States produced about one-fourth. Great Britain leads this country in production by about 15 per cent., but the output of the United States is practically equal to that of Spain, France, Russia, Austria and Hungary combined. We produced last year nearly twice as much iron-ore as Spain, with all her exports; and we mined 20 per cent. more than Germany and Luxemburg. In addition to the domestic iron-ores consumed in this country, 587,470 gross tons of foreign ore was imported, and the amount of mill-cinder used in blast-furnaces is estimated at 450,000 gross tons. The total quantity of iron-ore required in 1888 for blast-furnaces, rolling-mills and other purposes in the United States was approximately 12,700,000 gross tons. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the principal sources of this supply, and call attention to the extent of mining operations covering many years in certain localities, which, although some of them now produce but a small proportion' of the above total, have in the aggregate added very largely to the material

In addition to uintaite, the Uintah Mountains contain a deposit, or vein, of the peculiar hydrocarbon mineral, to which I have given the name wurtzilite, * in honor of the chemist, Henry Wurtz, Ph.D., of New York, who, in 1865, described grahamite, and who has added to our knowledge of the composition of the hydrocarbon minerals. Wurtzilite and uintaite are very similar in appearance, but are very different in their physical and chemical properties. Both are black, splendent and shining in fresh fracture; but the wurtzilite has a decided toughness, and a degree of elasticity, especially when warmed, which suggests to some persons a resemblance to caoutchouc. It was at first, at Salt Lake, believed and reported to be a mineral form of India-rubber, and great expectations of its value as a substitute for crude rubber were indulged in. It was, however, found that it would not act like rubber with sulphur; it would not incorporate with it and become "volcanized," and it was very refractory and insoluble in the ordinary solvents of rubber and of uintaite. The elasticity, though unlike the elasticity of rubber, led to the reference of the mineral to the species elaterite, the only name under which an elastic bitumen is described in the mineralogies; and it is so called in the list of the mineral products of Utah, given in the last message of the Governor of the Territory. The name elaterite, as used by Dana, covers at least three differing substances, ranging in specific gravity from 0.905 to 1.223. Two of the varieties are soft and elastic, much like India-rubber, and one is occasionally hard and brittle, imbedded in the softer kinds. All are rare, and comparatively unknown, and not generally represented in mineral collections. One of the varieties referred to here is the subterranean fungus from Derbyshire, described by Lister as early as 1673.

Drilling activity in Nebraska continued to decline during 1944. Nine tests for oil and gas were completed during the year and four wells were drilling at the close of the year. Four wells were drilled in Richardson County, three in Hitchcock County and single wells were drilled or drilling in Butler, Gage, Holt, Nemaha and Scottsbluff Counties. Only one of the completions resulted in commercial pro- duction, the others being abandoned as dry holes. A number of stratigraphic test holes were drilled in the state by the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., in Johnson, Otoe, Chase, Dundy and Garden Counties. No new fields were discovered during 1944 but the limits of the Barada field, Richardson County, was extended a short distance southward. Oil production continued to drop and about two thirds as much oil was produced in 1944 as in 1943.

"The most conservative persons I ever met are college undergraduates." Woodrow Wilson said that in 1905. No one is saying anything like it today. Chaos on the campus was a cliche of the sixties. Since 1905, education has expanded in every direction. Many more people are being educated for much longer periods of time. The school-leaving age has risen from 14 years to 20 years, on an average. Many are in school until after their 25th birthday. On the surface this situation appears all to the good. Our technical society needs a massive yearly infusion of semitrained (or educated, if you prefer) new blood. The efficiency of our economy and our standard of living are tied to high individual productivity which can be achieved only with an educated work force. Our democratic institutions are said to be founded on an educated electorate.

OXIDATION is characteristic of all processes for making steel from pig iron. This thought has been aptly expressed by H. W. Graham13 in the most recent Howe Memorial Lecture, "The process of steel-making consists of using iron oxide to reduce the carbon content of the pig iron to the desired level." Direct oxidation refers to the reaction that results from introducing oxygen either alone or mixed with other gases directly into the steel bath. In working a heat, oxygen in some form is added to the steel to remove the undesirable constituents as oxides. There are two general methods of supplying this oxygen to the open hearth bath. The method in which the oxygen is added as a, compound such as C02-or iron ore is designated an indirect method because the steel bath must first decompose the compound to attain oxygen in a usable form. The other method in which oxygen is added to the bath in the elemental or gaseous form, more or less diluted by other gases such as nitrogen, is a direct, method because no decomposition is necessary before the oxygen reacts with iron to form FeO which is dissolved in the bath in a usable form. Bubble formation (at least of a macroscopic size) presents no problem in case of direct oxidation because the reacting agent (oxygen) is in the form of bubbles when entering the metal. Regardless of whether oxygen is introduced into the bath directly or indirectly, several reactions proceed concurrently. In the presence of the bath of molten iron, FeO is formed either by oxidation of iron by oxygen or reduction of oxides by iron. This FeO dissolved in the molten iron is the source of oxygen for the oxidation of manganese, carbon, silicon, and phosphorus if these are present. The oxidation of carbon from steel is the controlling steelmaking reaction. The introduction of oxygen into the bath, its reaction in the elimination of impurities, and its control by the use of de-oxidizing additions have been subjects of importance since steel was first made by the bessemer process. Direct oxidation is, in a sense, an application of the bessemer principle to the open hearth process. Graham13 states: "The use of oxygen or air jets introduced into the metal bath is essentially an effort to approach in the open hearth the turbulence, rapid interface reaction, and high production rate per hour that exists in the bessemer process." The general subject, "Oxygen in Steelmaking," was given new life by the studies of Herty and associates starting about1925. The current interest in elemental oxygen is intimately related to the large scale production of oxygen developed during the war period. Some of the first applications were made during the early summer of 1946 at the Steel Co. of Canada using oxygen with the fuel. Such a use is of considerable interest and importance in contributing to faster heats but is not the subject of the present discussion which deals entirely with the introduction of elemental oxygen directly into the open hearth bath. Copper from Central Africa was well known to the Arab slave traders who depredated the country in the nineteenth century. By the 1870's slave raiding was so intense that the habits of the tribes were disrupted, and they no longer worked the copper deposits or made the crosses and bars of copper which had been their custom. In fact, the country had been greatly depopulated by the slave raiders. News of this horror was spread to the civilized world by missionaries and, in particular, by David Livingstone's writings. Whether to extend geographic knowledge, to suppress slavery or for national aggrandizement, the rush for African territory was on at the end of the nineteenth century. Cecil Rhodes at this time was established by his successes in diamonds and gold. He obtained the blessing of Lord Salisbury in 1889 to form the British South Africa Company under crown charter. His objectives were to occupy the lands north of the Zambezi for England and pay for development out of the country's mineral deposits. He planned to occupy the territory and close the gap to form an all-British route from the Cape to Cairo, one of his great dreams. With this master plan in mind he sent his agents into the field to make treaties with the tribes.

The variation of elastic modulus with terrzperature between -150° and 600°C has been investigated. Compounds close to equiatomic cornposition exhibit very low modulus values and very high damping near room temperature. The modulus rises steeply with both decreasing and increasing temperature. The modulus minimum and the high damping are believed to be connected with a martensitic transformation of TiNi. In bulk material this transition takes place slightly above room temperature quite rapidly and reversibly, with a hysteresis of some 30°C, depending on the Ti:Ni ratio. Oxygen impurity affects the reaction time. THE inter metallic compound TiNi has been reported to exist in an ordered CsCl (B2) structure,l-6 the homogeneity range varying rather markedly with temperature.7 Some investigators reported this compound to decompose peritectoidally to Ti2Ni and TiNi, between 650° and 800°C,3 or below,',g the latter workers also suggesting the decomposition to be strain-sensitive. Purdy and Parr were the first to report a structural transformation to a new, possibly hexagonal, structure at 36°C,7 a temperature indubitably too low to allow the significant amount of diffusion necessary for a peritectoid reaction. Mechanical-property investigations of compositions close to TiNi just above room temperature have qualitatively shown remarkable anomalies, particularly with respect to clamping,' and to a "memory" effect, that is, plastically deformed material returning to its original shape on being heated through the "decomposition" temperature.9 The original explanation of this effect—based on the apparent experimental observation of Ti2Ni or TiNi, formation in the material subjected to tensile or compressive stresses, respectivelp—does not appear plausible. It appeared more probable that the change involved may be a martensitic, diffusionless structural transformation, similar to those observed in other B2 structures such as 0 brass,'' AuCd,ll and AuZn.12 The existence of such transformation has been established recently,', although the symmetry of the low-temperature structure is not yet known. The present paper describes the elastic modulus and damping behavior of polycrystalline TiNi in both structures. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens. All the specimens to be investigated were prepared from premelted electrolytic nickel and iodide titanium by nonconsumable arc melting and casting in a water-cooled copper mold. The cast billets were canned in mild steel, extruded, and swaged to approximately 0.375 in. diam. The cans were then removed by pickling or machining. Preliminary material balance checks indicated no significant weight losses on melting (less than 5 mg on a 50-g button); hence nominal compositions have been used throughout. In agreement with previously reported observations7 no single-phase material was obtained at—or close to—Ti 1.00 Ni1.00 a small amount of finely divided second phase always being present. It was found that most of the oxygen impurity was associated with this minor phase, which was identified as oxygen-bearing Ti2Ni—possibly Ti,Ni,O.
