One of the most prominent features of our present-day industrial development is the ever-increasing demand put upon materials of construction. Engineering ingenuity, within the past 25 years, has been unusually active, and in some fields at least engineers frankly say that engineering design has progressed as far as the limitations imposed by the properties of the present materials of construction will permit. Consequently, they are today demanding improvement in their working materials and seeking new ones, through the aid of which the present limitations of design may be overcome. The activity of this search is evident in all fields, but it is particularly so in that of structural materials required to be resistant to corrosion. The corrosion resistance of metals and alloys is never absolute and all-inclusive; a particular alloy will withstand some corrosive conditions well and fail utterly under others. Furthermore, other properties, physical and mechanical, required in conjunction with corrosion resistance vary considerably for different commercial applications. One wants a soft, ductile sheet metal resistant to atmospheric corrosion; another, a high-strength alloy resistant to sulfuric acid. The last decade has witnessed active and definite progress in the development of high-strength, corrosion-resisting alloys. In June, 1924, a symposium by the American Society for Testing Materials, on Corrosion-resistant, Heat-resistant and Electrical-resistance Alloys, disclosed no less than 60 commercial alloys the properties of which were described as being suitable for industrial service where corrosion resistance was a feature. Today the number of these alloys has been doubled, at least. In addition, economy in design and construction through decreased weight has given considerable impetus to the improvement of alloys of which the mechanical propprties may be improved by heat-treatment.

Oxidation is characteristic of all processes for making steel from pig iron. This thought has been aptly expressed by H. W. Graham13 in the recent Howe Memorial Lecture, "The process of steel-making consists of using iron oxide to reduce the carbon content of the pig iron to the desired level." Direct oxidation refers to the reaction that results from introducing oxygen either alone or mixed with other gases directly into the steel bath. In working a heat, oxygen in some form is added to the steel to remove the undesirable constituents as oxides. There are two general methods of supplying this oxygen to the open hearth bath. The method in which the oxygen is added as a compound such as Con or iron ore is designated an indirect method because the steel bath must first decompose the compound to attain oxygen in a usable form. The other method in which oxygen is added to the bath in the elemental or gaseous form, more or less diluted by other gases such as nitrogen, is a direct method because no decomposition is necessary before the oxygen reacts with iron to form FeO which is dissolved in the bath in a usable form. Bubble formation (at least of a macroscopic size) presents no problem in case of direct oxidation because the reacting agent (oxygen) is in the form of bubbles when entering the metal. Regardless of whether oxygen is intro- duced into the bath directly or indirectly, several reactions proceed concurrently. In the presence of the bath of molten iron, FeO is formed either by oxidation of iron by oxygen or reduction of oxides by iron. This FeO dissolved in the molten iron is the source of oxygen for the oxidation of manganese, carbon, silicon, and phosphorus if these are present. The oxidation of carbon from steel is the controlling steelmaking reaction. The introduction of oxygen into the bath, its reaction in the elimination of impurities, and its control by the use of de-oxidizing additions have been subjects of importance since steel was first made by the bessemer process. Direct oxidation is, in a sense, an application of the bessemer principle to the open hearth process. Graham13 states: "The use of oxygen or air jets introduced into the metal bath is essentially an effort to approach in the open hearth the turbulence, rapid interface reaction, and high production rate per hour that exists in the bessemer process." The general subject, "Oxygen in Steel-making," was given new life by the studies of Herty and associates starting about1925. The current interest in elemental oxygen is intimately related to the large scale production of oxygen developed during the war period. Some of the first applications were made during the early summer of 1946 at the Steel Co. of Canada using oxygen with the fuel. Such a use is of considerable interest and importance in contributing to faster heats but is not the subject of the present discussion which deals entirely with the introduction of elemental oxygen directly into the open hearth bath.

(written discussion ?).-Studies of the probable future production of oil wells and fields-particularly those in the nature of the recent work by Lewis and Beal, having the object of increasing the percentage of recovery-rank, in both practical and theoretic value, very high, if indeed they do not outrank all other petroleum investigations except structural surveys. Even such surveys, although saving untold millions that might have been spent in prospecting unpromising territory, may have less ultimate value than generally supposed, for it may perhaps be argued that much if not most of the condemned territory will sooner or later be tested-some is already productive-and the most that can be rightly claimed is the recovery of cream first; also that the consumption of the richest portions first cannot be extenuated, as it might with some resources, on the ground that if the best is not taken now it will deteriorate.

Equipment for treating lead ores was added in 1905 to a copper plant which the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Co. had built in 1902 at Midvale, Utah, about 12 miles to the south of Salt Lake City. By 1906 the lead section of the plant had been rounded out and consisted of a 90-ton gravity concentrator, fifteen hand-rabbled reverbera-tory roasting furnaces, six blast furnaces, a briquetting plant for handling flue dust and fine ores, a regulus furnace for concentrating the low-grade matte made in the blast furnaces, and a baghouse. The copper section was later abandoned and the plant has been operated for many years exclusively as a lead smelter. Some 45 years had elapsed at the time this plant was built since the first attempts to smelt lead ores in the West, and lead smelting had become a large and profitable industry but fundamentally little that was really new had been developed, which could be embodied in a plant built in this period. Principles and tools to work with had remained much the same as those borrowed earlier from European practice. Capacities had been increased and there were mechanical improvements but hand charging was still in vogue and there was little attempt to recover suspended particles carried out with the furnace gases, beyond settling in flues, which usually was only partly effective for recovery of the coarser particles. Satisfactory roasting and preparation of the fine components of the charge were still partially solved problems. The Midvale plant of 1906 may be regarded as more or less typical of the smelting plant of this period for treating complex western lead ores as distinguished from the recovery of lead from the simple lead ores to the eastward. The operation of a concentrating mill directly in conjunction with a lead smelter was, however, not common practice. The ores treated in this plant have from the beginning come from mines owned and operated by the company or have been custom ores purchased in the territory tributary to the plant. The treatment of custom ores is an important service to the small producer who does not have sufficient tonnage to warrant a plant, and serves to increase the tonnage of the operator of large properties, thereby helping to reduce

Starting-- from Cu-Si diffusion couples a study of diffusion in the intermetallic compound Cu3Si of the Cu-Si system has been made. Mmker experiments showed copper to be the diffusing element. From the rate of growth of the Cu3Si phase diffusion coefficients were derived. The activation energy for diffusion is 18.6 kcal per mole. The couples show some interesting microscopic features, for which a tentative explanation is given. THE synthesis of dimethyldichlorosilane, (CH3)2SiC12, an important compound in the manufacture of methyl-silicones, takes place at the surface of a thin Cu3Si layer deposited on a mass of silicon particles."' By passing CH3C1 vapor at about 350°C, silicon atoms are consumed from Cu3Si in forming the volatile silane molecules, thus leaving copper atoms at the surface. It is well-known that copper acts as a poison for the above-mentioned reaction by catalyzing the dissociation of methylchloride.' However, no poisonous effect is observed, at least not before most of the silicon from the particles is converted into silane.3 This would be understandable, if either the copper atoms diffuse through the Cu3Si deposit to the underlying silicon or silicon atoms diffuse in the reverse direction to the copper, both processes resulting in the formation of new Cu3Si and so ensuring the proceeding of the reaction. In this paper experiments are described, demonstrating copper to be the diffusing element. Also a very low activation energy for the diffusion is observed. EXPERIMENTAL The silicon used contained 1 ppm Mg and 1 ppm Cu; the copper was spectroscopically pure (Fe: 2 ppm; Ag, Mg, Si: 1 ppm). The copper and silicon samples were prepared in the form of blocks of approximately 10 by 10 by 5 mm with two parallel sides by spark-machining. The blocks were ground on emery paper (grit 600), etched (copper with nitric acid, silicon with a 4:l nitric acid:hydrofluoric acid mixture), and cleaned with alcohol. As the brittleness of the silicon did not allow a welding procedure to prepare the diffusion couples, the copper and silicon blocks were pressed together in a steel clamp. The pressure exerted by the clamp brought about contact between the parts of the couple and so ensured proceeding of the diffusion. The couples were heated in a vacuum furnace (about 10"5 Torr). The temperature was stabilized within 1 pct. After a heat treatment a section parallel to the direction of diffusion was examined in the microscope and in the X-ray scanning microanalyzer. To determine whether copper or silicon is the diffusing element marker experiments were carried out using tungsten wires with a 20-p diam. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 give micrographs of diffusion zones of Cu/Si couples. Analysis by the electron mi-croprobe of the Cu/Si samples after a definite heat treatment revealed the existence of only one intermetallic phase as can be seen from the line scan shown in Fig. 5. From the X-ray diffraction pattern it could be deduced that this phase was CU 3 Si.4 Even when diffusion zones of considerable width (up to 600 p) were obtained, no other phases occurring in the Cu-Si system could be detected, neither by the electron microprobe nor by X-ray diffraction analysis. The isothermal formation of martensite at subzero temperatures has been studied in an austenitic stainless steel. The amount of martensite formed isothermally in a given time was found to follow a C-curve behavior with decreasing temperature. Since isothermal rnartensitic transformation occurs at temperatures above the true M. temperature of the olloy, the observed M. temperature is dependent on the cooling rate. It is believed that a general martensite theory must include the basic concepts of the strain embryo theory, and also the important role of thermal fluctuations. UNTIL recently the isothermal component of the martensitic transformation had been considered as a trivial effect in theoretical considerations of this type of transformation. One of the postulates used in defining a martensitic transformation was that the reaction was temperature dependent but not time dependent. Cohen and his associates1'2 were the first to report the isothermal formation of mar-tensite. They obsel-ved the time dependency of the martensite reaction at room temperature in plain carbon steels and certain tool steels. They found that a small amount of additional transformation occurred after the specimen reached the quenching temperature and that the rate of this isothermal transformation decreased rapidly with time. These authors considered this phenomenon to be a "tailing-off" of the main athermal reaction. Kurdjumov and MaksimovaL 5 studied the isothermal formation of martensite at subatmospheric temperatures in steels containing 0.6 pct C-6 pct Mn, 1.6 pct C, and in an iron-base alloy containing 23 pct Ni and 3.4 pct Mn. In each case it was found that both the initial rate and the total amount of isothermal transformation exhibited sharp maxima with decreasing temperature. They stated that it was possible to completely suppress the martensitic transformation in the 0.6 pct C-6 pct Mn steel by drastic quenching in liquid nitrogen. They interpreted their results in terms of a thermally activated process. The maximum in the rate of nucleation vs. temperature curve was assumed to be a result of the temperature dependence of the rate of growth of the martensite plates. It has been demonstrated," however, that martensite plates can form with great rapidity even at temperatures approaching absolute zero. In addition," attempts to confirm the reported suppression of the martensitic transformation by rapid cooling of a 0.6 pct C-6 pct Mn steel have proved unsuccessful. On this basis, and on other theoretical grounds, the validity of some of Kurd-jumov's results and conclusions is open to serious question. Cohen, Machlin, and Paranjpe' have proposed a theory of martensite formation based on the nucleation of strain embryos and a growth mechanism involving cooperative atomic displacements. According to this theory thermal fluctuations can make a strain embryo supercritical and thereby produce martensite isothermally. Das Gupta and Lement' have investigated the isothermal formation of martensite in a 17 pct Cr-0.7 pct C steel at temperatures below the ambient. They found that partial suppression of the martensitic reaction occurred on quenching into liquid nitrogen. That part of the reaction which can be suppressed is taken to correspond to the isothermal rather than the athermal part of the rnartensitic transformation. The initial rate of isothermal transformation for this steel was found to go through a maximum with decreasing temperature. This is in conformity with the findings of Kurdjumov and Maksimova for the steels used in their investigation. Das Gupta and Lement conclude that isothermal martensite formation occurs by the nucleation of new plates and is always preceded by some athermal transformation. An iron-base alloy containing 14 pct Cr-9 pct Ni was used in this investigation to study further the kinetics of the austenite to martensite transforma-

Al3Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum was found to exhibit good Charpy impact toughness and little notch sensitivity even though its room-temperature tensile elongation parallel to the whiskers is only 2 pct. This impact behavior was maintained d liquid nitrogen temperature (-196"C). It is postulated that this behavior is due primarily to the presence of the continuous aluminum matrix which provides sufficient 10calized ductility in the vicinity of the crack tip to absorb considerable energy from the advancing crack. The impact behavior of Al-Alni was found to be quite anisotropic. Of six orientations studied, the transverse orientation having the notch normal to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the lowest impact energy, whereas the transverse orientation having the notch parallel to the whisker axis was found to exhibit the highest impact energy. A significant differnce was noted between the impact behavior of material containing needlelike whiskers and that containing bladelike whiskers. Only two of the six orientations studied exhibited complete fracture for the material containing needlelike whiskers. On the other had, most of the specimens containing bladelike whiskers exhibited complete fracture. It was postulated that the bladelike whiskers block transverse flow, thus reducing the amount of plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip. One of the more significant advantages of composite materials is the prospect of combining high strength with toughness. In general, toughness is associated with materials which exhibit considerable ductility and can deform plastically in the presence of a stress concentration. Very strong materials which resist plastic deformation generally exhibit low toughness. At first glance, then, it would appear as though strength and toughness are mutually incompatible so that useful engineering materials would have to be a compromise between the two. One approach to the problem of combining the high intrinsic strength of ceramics with the toughness of metals was to mix them together to form a cermet. Unfortunately, the toughness of cermets was found to be rather disappointing. Whisker reinforcement of metals, however, appears to be a more promising approach. It has been demonstrated that whisker-reinforced metals produced by unidirectional solidification exhibit enhanced strength due to the presence of high strength nonmetallic whiskers. The total strain capacity of these composites in the direction of fiber alignment is limited to that of the fibers, the matrix being unable to carry the load once the fibers have failed. A characteristic, then, of whisker composites is low ductility in the direction of whisker alignment, on the order of a few percent elongation. This low elongation, which is usually associated with brittle behavior, should not be taken as an indication of low toughness. Such a material can exhibit significant ductility in directions other than parallel to the fibers7 and can therefore possess significant intrinsic toughness. Toughness in a fiber-reinforced metal is derived from several mechanisms. The first is due to the toughness of the matrix itself. A continuous ductile metal matrix can act as an effective crack arrest medium by undergoing localized plastic deformation. Cracks initiated from the surface of the composite or from a brittle fiber failure must travel through the matrix before reaching another brittle phase particle. A second crack arrest mechanism peculiar to fiber composites is due to the fact that, as a crack travels through the matrix and approaches a fiber, the plastic deformation ahead of the crack tip will result in loading of the fiber. This causes the matrix shear strength in the plastic zone to be apparently higher, thus extracting more energy from the crack and diverting the crack at an angle to the original direction of propagation. A third crack arrest mechanism occurs in fiber composites which exhibit a weak bond between fiber and matrix. The idea was proposed by Cook and Gordons that if a crack propagating transversely in a fiber composite were made to turn and run along the fibers by decohesion of the fiber-matrix bond, then toughness would be imparted by the blunting of the crack tip and the creation of new surfaces. The last mechanism, interfacial decohesion, is commonly noted in naturally occurring fiber composites such as wood, bone, and bamboo, and has been observed in man-made composites such as glass fiber-reinforced resins,g silica fiber-reinforced aluminum," laminated steel," and tungsten and silica fiber-reinforced electroplated copper.'' The first mechanism, crack arrest by plastic deformation in the matrix, has been noted in tungsten wire reinforced cast copper." The purpose of this investigation was to quantitatively assess the toughness of a whisker-reinforced metal as a function of orientation. Previous investigation considered only cracks propagating nominally perpendicular to the reinforcement. In this investigation, crack propagation in three mutually perpendicular directions as well as three intermediate orientations was investigated. The system chosen for study was the unidirectionally solidified A1-A13Ni eu-tectic alloy which has a microstructure consisting of 10 pct by volume of A13Ni whiskers in a matrix of aluminum This material exhibits two different kinds of whisker morphology, depending upon the rate at which it is solidified.' DURING the past year or two considerable time and money have been spent in developing equipment for tubing large-volume high-pressure oil and gas wells without loss of production. That the efforts have met with success is proved by the fact that any properly cased well, regardless of its production or regardless of its rock pressure or working pressure, can now be safely tubed with no appreciable loss of production, provided experienced crews handle the new equipment. It is conceded that a far better gas-oil ratio can be secured by flowing a well through tubing of a proper diameter-the diameter of the tubing depending, of course, upon the volume of fluid and gas and the depth of the well-than by the more usual method of installing a choke at the mouth of the well. Where possible it is becoming the practice to bring wells in through tubing, though in the majority of instances this is not feasible. In many instances it has developed, after a well has been brought in through tubing, that the tubing installed is either too large or too small for the most efficient operation or that the well had not been drilled deep enough. The equipment described in this paper, in the hands of experienced men, permits the tubing of these wells after they have been brought in, with the size of tubing then determined by actual observation to be best suited for each particular well, and with no danger of the well getting out of control, of catching fire, of drilling itself deeper, or of any loss of production. The deeper the flowing production with the consequent future higher lifting costs, the more essential it is that the size of tubing used be such as to give the best possible gas-oil ratio. The ability to bring in these deep wells through the casing and then, immediately after their completion, regardless of volume or pressure, to tube them with the size of tubing that permits the most efficient use of the gas present will doubtless save many dollars.

A study was made of the development of texture and the anisotropy in plastic flow of Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy. Based on Pole figure determinations, the shifting of texture induced by rolling at approximately 400°C was found to be due primarily to slip rotation for the major Portion of the material. Grain boundary shear is believed to be an important factor. The anisotropy of the textured alloy was examined in terms of the variations of yield stress under tension and the ratio of bi -axial strain increments µp, in the temperature range 25" to 290°C. The results were related to Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy. The Schmid factors of (1100)[1120], (1101)[1120/, and (1101)[1120] slip systems were analyzed and found to be compatible with the observed anisotropy. Cross-slip between these planes was proposed as a possible deformation mode. In a number of published articles, considerable interest has been directed to the possible achievement of texture hardening in hcp metals. Following Backofen, Hosford, and Burke,&apos; this phenomenon was related to the yield criteria of the material and was expressed in terms of the biaxial strain ratio, r = d?w/d?l. The higher the value of r, the greater is the expected potential for texture hardening under certain loading conditions. For a given material, r varies with direction. Such variation can be traced to the anisotropy in plastic flow and can be explained within the framework of the various modes of deformation. Hatch2 found that a high r value coincides with a texture whereby the (0001) pole is closely aligned with the surface normal for sheet materials, Based on the analysis of the slip on the {1010}, {1011}, and (0001) planes, Lee and Backofen3 and Avery, Hosford, and Backofen4 concluded that the resistance to thinning is reduced by the operation of the (0001) <1120> slip system; with this reasoning they were able to explain the low r values (i.e., r « 1) observed in magnesium alloy sheets in the rolling direction and in commercially pure titanium in the transverse direction. The general equation, dealing with plastic flow in a polycrystalline aggregate has been used to correlate the plastic anisotropy and texture. In this expression, T and s are shear and normal stresses, and dri and d? are shear and normal strain increments, respectively. Assuming that five slip systems are operative within each grain and applying the principle of maximum work,5,6 one can determine the m value among the available systems. On this basis, Hosford7 and Chin, Nesbitt, and Williams&apos; were able to correlate m with yield stress under plane-strain compression, and Svensson9 was able to predict the variation of yield stress in textured aluminum. These workers made their analyses from materials in which slip operation is known to be associated with plastic flow. Questions remain regarding the derivation of Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy,10,11 since it was formulated on von Mises&apos; yield criterion.&apos;&apos; Its ability to deal with other forms of deformation has been in doubt.13 Others have discussed the validity of Hill&apos;s quadratic equation relating strain and yield stress.14&apos;15 For hcp titanium, deformation by various modes of slip and twinning operations has been reported.16-20 If all possible modes of deformation operate and contribute substantially to the plastic flow, it is difficult to imagine how the quadratic expression can suitably describe the anisotropic plastic flow of titanium alloys. Backofen and Hosford15 considered that Hill&apos;s is a macroscopic theory and implied that the major mode of deformation by slip mechanism will adequately describe anisotropy of the material. In the present investigation, slip operation will be shown to play the major role in the development of sheet texture induced by rolling of a commercial titanium alloy. Although twinning and other modes of deformation may also operate, their operation is believed to be secondary. The anisotropic properties of the sheet, which can be expressed in terms of directional variation of r, µp = -d?w/d?l and the yield stress will be shown to be governed primarily by slip operation. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The titanium alloy chosen for the present investigation had a nominal composition of 8 wt pct Al, 1 wt pct Mo, 1 wt pct V, and 0.1 wt pct interstitial impurities. Sheets varying between 0.1 and 0.15 in. thickness were used. The alloy was received in a condition which was prepared by rolling at 900°C and annealing at 700°C. Subsequently, the sheets were subjected to further reduction in thickness by rolling at 400°C. A total reduction in thickness of 65 to 70 pct was obtained by a series of quick passes in a rolling mill with intermediate reheating. Further reduction in thickness was not possible due to cracking developed at the edges of the sheets. X-ray measurements were conducted in a Siemens and a Norelco unit to determine the texture of the sheets. Reflection techniques were used exclusively with CuK, radiation and a nickel filter. The loss of X-ray intensity due to geometric defocusing was calibrated with a technique described previously." THE PROCESSES USED FOR THE rolling of zinc are not novel or unique in a mechanical sense. There has not been so widespread a tendency toward heavy slabs and mechanical handling, and toward 3-high and continuous mills as has taken place with steel and with some of the other nonferrous metals. Those respects in which the rolling of zinc differs from the rolling of other metals center around two facts. First, the hexagonal zinc crystal has only one plane of easy slip: namely, the basal plane. Fortunately, however, the crystal twins readily on any of the pyramidal planes, thereby creating new basal planes favorably oriented for relief of the stress which has caused twinning. Second, the recrystallization temperature of zinc is little above room temperature and for very pure grades of zinc may in fact, be at room temperature for severely strained material. The practical effect of these two characteristics of zinc will become evident in the later discussion. First, it is necessary to give some attention to the melting and casting of billets for rolling. Reverberatory furnaces are commonly used for melting. These vary over a wide range of capacity from as low as 5 tons to 100 tons or over. Low-frequency electric furnaces have also been used with satisfactory results. Arc Furnaces are, of course unsuited to a low-melting and lute-boiling metal, such as zinc. To minimize oxidation and volatilization losses in the furnace, the temperature should be kept below 500°C. With this temperature in the melting furnace, a suitable pouring temperature in the neighborhood of 460°C can he maintained at the mold when a transfer ladle is used for pouring.

A GROWING uneasiness in the oil fields indicates that doubts are arising as to the efficiency of the present technical, economic and legal arrangements affecting production. Recent documents of the federal government, debates in state legislatures, editorials in the daily press and statements of oil company executives re-echo the notion that the present methods of producing oil satisfy neither the business man nor the public. Such intimations are of utmost importance, since oil is a vital clement in modern industry and dependence upon it increases as new uses develop. SECTION I-PRESENT SCHEME OF COMPETITIVE EXPLOITATION IS WASTEFUL The oil industry has convinced itself, for very good reasons, that the present scheme of competitive exploitation results in losses, both in terms of quantities of oil and in terms of profits. The story of these losses is familiar enough, and it is necessary only to distinguish and summarize briefly certain factors that are of importance to the following argument. Oil pools are exploited under a competitive economic system based on private ownership and contract; the hope of profits attracts capital and enterprise, and competition is supposed to serve as a regulative factor. Whether such a scheme of industrial organization works is partially dependent on the ability of the producer to withhold or produce is commodity as he sees fit, in accordance with the dictates of market demand.

There are some simple theoretical approaches to pillar design but they leave much to be desired. There are also more complex theoretical approaches, but at this time the most realistic approach is to go into the mines and observe and measure how real pillars are performing under real conditions; to allow the information thus gathered to ferment in our minds - then to project the behaviour of those pillars into our new designs and mining techniques, probably with no formulas at all. Examples, from half-a-dozen different mines, show how a simple- minded approach, through observation and measurement, led to changes in pillar design which often contradicted the textbook but made very significant contributions to mining safety, efficiency and costs. The good news is that we know a lot more about pillar design than we realize. We have, between us, looked at millions of pillars of all kinds, under all conditions, but we have overlooked what they are trying to tell us. We can take problem situations and turn them into opportunities and, in that way, become better stewards of the resources which have been given to us.

The activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid magnesium, over the temperature range 650° to 800°C, was obtained from measurements of the distribution of plutoninm between a 50 mole pct MgC12-30 mole pct NaCl-20 mole pct KC1 molten-salt mixture and liquid Zn-Mg alloys. For dilute solutions (0.08 at. pct Pu) the activity coefficient of plutonium was found to vary from 10.1 at 650°C to 12.2 at 800°C. The activity coefficients of plutonium in dilute liquid solutions of plutonium in uranium, silver, lanthanum. cerium, and calcium were estimated to be. The distribution data indicate a value of about 0.1 at 800°C for the activity coefficient of PuCl3 dissolved in the above ternary salt mixture. LIQUID magnesium and several liquid alloys of magnesium with metals such as zinc and cadmium have been shown to be useful solvents in pyrochemical processes for the recovery of uranium and plutonium from discharged nuclear fuels,&apos; and for the separation of transuranium elements.&apos; The present study was undertaken to determine the activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid Pu-Mg alloys in support of process-development work. The activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid magnesium was determined from experimental data on the distribution of plutonium between a liquid ternary MgC12-NaC1-KC1 salt mixture and various liquid Zn-Mg alloys. The distribution data were used to calculate the ratio of the activity coefficients of plutonium in liquid zinc and in liquid magnesium. The activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid magnesium was then computed from the known activity coefficient of plutonium in liquid zinc. It was not necessary to know the thermodynamic properties of the molten-salt system explicitly. The major features of the Pu-Mg system have been reported by Schonfeld.3 At the temperatures of interest in the present study, i.e., above about 600°C, the phase diagram indicates the existence of a wide liquid-miscibility gap, with the plutonium-rich liquid containing about 8 at. pct Mg and the magnesium-rich liquid containing about 10 at. pct Pu at the intersection with the solidus regions. Additional data on the compositions of the two equilibrium liquid phases obtained in this laboratory4 have defined the miscibility gap up to the consolute temperature (at about 1040°C). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Materials. The 50 mole pct MgC12-30 mole pct NaC1-20 mole pct KC1 salt mixture was prepared by melting the required proportions of reagent-grade NaCl and KC1 with anhydrous MgC12. The molten salt was then purified by contacting it with liquid Cd-30 wt pct Mg alloy (at 450°C) to reduce oxidizing impurities, followed by filtration through a stainless-steel frit (pore size, 65 µ) to remove solid MgO formed during the reduction. The purity specifications of the zinc, magnesium, and plutonium were 99.999, 99.8, and 99.85 pct, respectively. Apparatus. The liquid salt and metal were contained in a tantalum crucible inside a graphite secondary vessel. The crucible assembly was located inside a resistance-heated stainless-steel furnace tube. The furnace tube was closed by means of a stainless-steel cover, which was attached by bolts, with a neoprene O-ring serving as a gas-tight seal. The top of the furnace tube was water-cooled to protect the O-ring. The furnace-tube cover was provided with a tantalum thermowell, a tantalum stirrer, and a port through which sampling tubes could be inserted and materials could be added to the melt without admitting air to the furnace tube. Vacuum and an argon atmosphere were available through a side-arm on the furnace tube. The furnace temperature was regulated by a proportional controller that was actuated by a chromel-alumel thermocouple between the furnace tube and the heating elements of the furnace. The melt temperature was measured by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple in the tantalum thermowell. The accuracy of temperature measurement was ±3°C. The salt and metal phases were intermixed by a motor-driven tantalum paddle positioned at the liquid interface. The tantalum crucible was provided with four baffles to increase the turbulence. The sampling tubes consisted of 1/4-in.-OD tantalum tubing that terminated in a tantalum frit (Kawecki Chemical Co.; average pore size, 30 µ). Procedure. The zinc, magnesium, plutonium, and salt were charged to the tantalum crucible; then the system was evacuated and filled with argon. The melt was brought to the desired temperature, and agitated for 1 to 2 hr. After allowing the salt and metal to separate, both phases were sampled. Filtered samples were obtained by immersing the end of the sampling tube in the liquid and increasing the argon pressure sufficiently to force the liquid salt or metal through the frit into the tantalum tube. The sample was then partially withdrawn into the cooler portion of the furnace tube and permitted to solidify before being removed. The temperature sequence for sampling at each magnesium concentration was 800°, 700°, 600°, 650°, and 750°C. Organized rescarch began in Britain by the formation of a committee, upon the recommendation of the Safety in Mines Research Board in 1923, to investigate methods of reducing accidents from falls of roof in coal mines. This committee examined current practice in supporting underground workings in the principal coal fields, and its findings have been published in the Board&apos;s publications.&apos; - Toward the end of these investigations it was suggested by the Chief Inspector of Mines that committees of the several mining institutes be formed to examine the problem in their respective districts. The formation of these committees marked a new phase in research on strata control. The work, though being done in the separate coal fields, followed a scheme outlined by the chief Mining Engineer of the Research Board, and was coordinated by his office. FACTORS INVOLVED The subject is being considered in Britain from two aspects: 1. To provide. by supports, means to prevent falls of fractured ground. 2. TO develop methods whereby the strata can be maintained in the least broken condition and thus make falls less likely. The first aspect is the one that will most likely lead to immediate results from the accident standpoint. It depends largely upon the assimilation of already acquired knowledge regarding the properties of supports and their correct application. The second aspect is perhaps more fundamental, and involves also the properties of the strata and their behavior under the influence of the forces induced by mining. The problem involves many natural factors that cannot be controlled, such as depth, inclination and thickness of seam and nature of the rocks. Other factors, which may be considered to a certain extent controllable, cannot be varied readily and with sufficient frequency to facilitate easy investigation; some of these are: rate of advance of the working face, length of face, direction of the face with regard to cleat and inclination, system and arrangements of rock packing behind longwall faces. In any given case the very many factors present have a mutual influence upon the effects produced in the mine. For example, a study of the effects of rate of advance cannot be done without considering the effects of other factors such as nature of strata, direction of face and quality and arrangement of supports.
