One of the problems arising from the use of modern machines and systems in coal mining is increased emission of explosive gases into the mine passageways. Interest in degasification of coal seams has grown. The authors summarize the results of coal permeability tests done at Virginia Polytechnic Inst. on one of the fundamental aspects of the problem. There are undoubtedly many factors that affect the emission of gas from coal but the permeability of coal to gas flow would seem to be fundamental. However, there is very little information on coal permeability to gas flow available in the U.S. at the present time, despite the fact that such knowledge would appear to be significant in any degasification effort. Studies made recently in the mining engineering laboratories at Virginia Polytechnic Inst. have determined values of permeability on 1-in. cubes of selected coals. COAL PERMEABILITY The permeability values given in this paper are based on adaptations of Darcy's law formulated by Henry Darcy in I856 from experiments with fluid flow in porous media.' Using air as the gaseous fluid, they were obtained by employing similar methods as are used to dete1:mine the permeability of petroleum and gas reservoir rock specimens. Permeability is. a measure of the ease with which fluids flow through a porous substance, and it is governed by the connected pores within a porous medium. If a few large-sized pores, fractures or channels are present within the medium, the medium can have great permcnability without significant porosity. It is reasonable to assume, therefore, that the permeability of coal, due to its structure, is based on fractures connecting the pore space left as the result of some degree of devolatilization or other changes of the substance from which coal was formed. The results of this irvestigation tend to validate this assumption in that the values obtained indicate a close relationship between the rank and permeability of coal. COALS TESTED AND PROCEDURE The coals whose permeability values were determined in this investigation are given in Table I.

It is now generally recognized that diffusion data and theories are needed for multicomponent systems, where extensive practical developments and even some theoretical studies have already been made. For example, much recent work on precipitation from solid solution has been concerned with ternary solid solutions such as A-M-Z' while Zener relaxation has been studied on Au-Ag-Zn alloys,' although adequate diffusion data are available for neither of these systems. Actually, the only ternary systems for which systematic diffusion studies have been begun, in addi- tion to the one reported here, are CO-i-cr3 and Cu-A-Au. Since the theory of multicomponent diffusion is still in the stage of active development5 it is important to distinguish the various kinds of diffusion data that can be determined. An oversimplified approach, widely used prior to 1950, was to determine the influence of a third element, such as nickel, on the diffusion behavior of a binary alloy, such as CU-Z. Later it was recognized7 that four diffusion coefficients can be used to describe ordinary interdiffusion in a ternary system, while as many as six coefficients may be required to include the Kirkendall effect. It is likely that the number of independent coefficients will be shown to be less than four and six, respectively, through the application of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes.5 The simplest type of diffusion in a multicomponent system is tracer diffusion, since each component is characterized by its own tracer-diffusion coefficient in an alloy of a given composition. Thus, in a ternary alloy there are three tracer-diffusion coefficients, each a function of composition and temperature. The present research program is a study of tracer diffusion in the copper corner of the Cu-Ni-Zn system out to 30 at. pct each of Ni and Zn in a 150°C range of temperature just below the solidus temperature. The

The fact that coal is a complex organic material and heterogeneous in composition has made its study extremely difficult, particularly in regard to obtaining a fundamental concept of the processes involved in the formation of coke. It has been stated1 recently that coals are natural polymers and that in a complex reaction such as occurs during carbonization the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. Such being the case, it would be expected, therefore, that a series of coals subjected to exactly the same conditions of coking would produce results that should be related quantitatively to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. In the past, however, this fact was not generally recognized and consequently many empirical test methods were devised for testing coals. The interpretation of the results obtained depended upon comparing a set of data with other data on coals of known characteristics. The testing procedure had to be conducted in precisely the same manner each time and not the least requirement in making the interpretation was experience. The test methods varied from those utilizing a gram of coal to the plant-scale tests in which one or more ovens were charged with the test coal. The aim had been principally to find some simple, inexpensive means by which the coke-making and other properties of coal could be predicted. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of these endeavors, for anyone acquainted with the problems involved in the selection of coals for making coke is well aware of the time and expense involved in making a series of definitive tests. Several attempts have been made to derive formulas for such predictions. The relations of both ultimate and proximate analyses to coke physical properties and byproduct yields have been studied. Lowry and co-workers1 correlated statistically the U. S. Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association assay test results with coal analyses, using 90 coals and coal blends. Parry,² Spooner,3 and Gabinskii and Krym4 made similar correlations. Lowry concluded that there were definite relationships between the proximate analyses of the coals and the yields and properties of the products. Although this statistical study was made on test results from carbonizing coal in a cylindrical steel retort, the conclusions are important and provided one of the first steps in the simplification of this complex subject. Studies should be made of other references on this subject just cited. Studies of the coking process reported in the literature frequently were confined to a small number of coals, and very few have included coals from various ranks. It would seem logical, however, that a program for studying factors involved in the formation of coke should be based on a number of coals selected from each of the various classes or types of coking coal. A method has been developed whereby one may calculate the productivity factors of producing formations from a knowledge of the reservoir conditions. Account is taken not only of the heterogeneous character of the gas-oil flow system but also of the detailed variations with pressure of the shrinkage and viscosity of the oil, the solubility of the gas in the oil, and even the variability of the gas viscosity and the deviation of the gas from ideal behavior. Curves are shown giving the results of numerical calculations on the production rate as a function of the pressure differential for a high-prcssure and a low-pressure system, three values of gas-oil ratio being treated in each case. Curves are also given showing the variation with distance from the well of the pressure, oil saturation, and permeability. The effect of connate water is briefly discussed in relation to the apparently large discrepancies between the calculated and observed productivity-factor values. Introduction The significance of the productivity factor as a measure of the capacity of an oil-bearing formation to produce is well recognized; for it is the composite and integrated resultant of the physical prop-crties of both the porous medium and the fluid stream passing through it with respect to the ease with which the particular petroleum fluids present in the formation can flow through it and into producing wells. The most direct method of determining the productivity factor of a well consists, as is well known, in the simultaneous measurement of reservoir-pressure differentials and rates of production and the expression of the data in terms of rate of flow per unit pressure drop.' Actual measurements carried out in this manner on producing wells have given factors that generally lie in the range of o to Ioo bbl. per day per pound pressure drop. This wide range arises not only from variations in permeability but also from the varying sand thickness of producing formations. One of the aims of developing a theory of the mechanics of oil production obviously is that of predicting what the productivity factor should be from a knowledge of the individual characteristics of the producing formation and the fluids produced. A relationship exists between the color and the chemical composition of the pebbles from the Bone Valley Phosphate Formation. Darker-colored pebbles are relatively high in iron oxide and relatively low in calcium phosphate when compared to lighter-colored samples; the brown color of the phosphate pebbles can be correlated with their iron content and the black and gray colors with their organic carbon content.1,3 It was anticipated that the darkness of a phosphate sample might be quantitatively measured by a simple reflectivity test and that the amount of reflected light could be correlated with the chemical composition of the rock, especially with the elements which cause the color and darkness of the Florida phosphates. Twenty-one samples of production grade phosphate rock from Hillsboro County, Fla., were studied. All samples were ground to -200 mesh for reflectivity tests and analyses. All analyses are accurate to well within ±2% of the reported value, except for aluminum and organic carbon, which are accurate to only ±15% of the reported amount. Reflectivity measurements were taken with a model 610 Photovoltmeter for tri-stimulus amber, blue and green, and white lights. Experimental procedures and data are available upon request. Results Table 1 contains linear correlation coefficients (LCC) for the element-reflectance relationships for the samples. The top portion of the table refers to the LCC between the percent of light reflected off the samples and the percent of a given element (or its oxide) as analyzed. In the lower portion of the table the LCC refers to the relationship between the same reflectance data and the chemical analyses which have been corrected on the basis of 0% acid insoluble material (chiefly quartz) in the phosphate rock. Each LCC presented in Table I is computed for the 14 coarser samples exclusive of the seven concentrates since the concentrate samples appear to have anomalous reflectivities upon comparison with the coarser grades. Only the most significant LCC for each element is presented in graphical form. Discussion of Data Iron: [Fig. 1] is a graph of the relationship between iron and reflectivity (LCC = - 0.98). A good correlation with Fe2O3, is expected due to the relationship between the tan (or brown) color and the abundance of iron oxide, the principal mode of occurrence of iron in Florida phosphates.8 Note the location of the seven triangles which repre-

THE Tri-State field is now believed to be the largest zinc district in the world. It has a potential production sufficient to supply the entire zinc demands of the country. It is estimated that a train 70 miles long would be required to haul the district's 1919 output of 60 per cent. zinc concentrates. For many years,, including 1917, Missouri surpassed Oklahoma in zinc production. In 1918, however, Oklahoma led by a wide margin and, in 1919, Missouri produced less than one-sixth of the total for the three states, when Kansas replaced Missouri in second place in the production. The district is now producing one-third of the zinc of the world and twice as much as ever before at the present price.

Efficient mining of copper ore at the White Pine mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is partially dependent on the rather unique problem of predicting variations and rock types in a barren stratum called the upper sandstone. The pronounced effect which this formation has on the local mining techniques is reflected by the necessity of deciding whether to mine the sandstone along with ore-bearing rock, thus diluting overall ore grade, or, alternatively, leaving the sandstone behind to form the mine roof. THE OREBODY AND MINING TYPES In the mine, the cupriferous zone of the Nonesuch shale is divided into three major portions (Fig. I). Lying conformably on top of the Copper Harbor formation (or "lower sandstone") is the lower part of the orebody, the parting shale. The parting shale is overlain by the upper sandstone. On top of the upper sandstone, the basal portion (8 ft) of the upper shale is quite similar to the parting shale. Both the upper shale and parting shale are divided into a number of smaller stratigraphic units, each having a characteristic copper content, as shown by the histogram of Fig. 1. Other authors have dealt in detail with the stratigraphy and mineralogy of the orebody, so it will suffice here to call attention to the low copper content of the upper sandstone.

The need for a practical method of deciding upon new alloy steel analyses to widen its markets was the problem facing the Chrome Steel Works at the beginning of 1927. In addition to determining the physical properties of the alloys under consideration, it was necessary to test their value in service. Small melts of steel in a crucible, from which test specimens could be made, were insufficient to determine more than physical properties, therefore actual castings and ingots had to be made before the products could be placed in service. Furthermore, to save further experimental work, it was desirable that these heats should be made on a "pilot" basis; that is, actually duplicating regular open-hearth furnace practice. Therefore a one-ton (2000-lb.) acid open-hearth furnace was built. Furnace Design There are no special features in the design of this furnace. Standard acid open-hearth practice is followed, with the reproportioning of the dimensions necessitated by its small size; notably, a considerably increased length in proportion to width in order to get proper flame propagation. After the first heat was made it was found that the check-ers were insufficient. The checker chambers were increased in size and the checker openings were made much smaller. The furnace was started late in March, 1927, and made 65 heats. Experimental work was then stopped unti1, the data accumulated could be worked up and summarized. The run was resumed in November and the furnace is still operating, having made at this writing 60 additional heats. For the last series of runs, there was some rebuilding of both the furnace itself and the checkers. Slag pockets were added. Fig. 1 shows details of construction; Fig. 2, the general appearance. All designing was done by the operating and engineering staff. Construction materials were those available around the plant. The reversing valve is a standard butterfly type taken from an old furnace. The slag pockets and checkers are cleaned by digging down to arched openings which have been bricked up.

REVIEW of the literature on hydrogen in steels indicates that inadequate consideration has been given to the influence of temperature gradients on segregation of this element. Even when segregation has been taken into account, the interpretation of the data has been seriously handicapped by incomplete understanding of the mechanism by which it occurred. Recognition of a mechanism which will be described as "thermal segregation" appears to rationalize many of the observed effects so well that it will be reported here with some preliminary experimental evidence. The complete quantitative evaluation of the factors controlling the mechanism will require extensive experimentation. Rather than attempting to present a summary of the many and highly varied papers that have been presented at this symposium on sampling and grade control, I will attempt to extract the general philosophy of analysis and approach, and attempt to identify the trend of future developments. First, the term "sampling" is used with its broadest connotations. A sample consists of a representative portion of a larger mass, and must represent the mass not only in the grade of contained metals or minerals, but also in all other respects in terms of mineralogy and mineral quality (1, 5), deleterious materials, recoverability of economic components, physical behavior, geophysical response (I), and even archaeological and environmental aspects (7, 11). The sample must be taken from a locality and in such a manner and quantity that it is representative of the larger rock mass. This calls for complete and accurate geological control and an understanding of the nature and distribution of the contained chemical and physical elements and a record of the effectiveness of the different sampling methods. Second, value of a given mass of ore material is based upon its profitability - the difference between recoverable value and costs to achieve recovery, beneficiation and sale. There is a strong movement in mining geology control toward more complete analysis in determining cutoff grades and in grade control, as illustrated by the kriging of metallurgical recovery factors as well as grade at the Mercur Mine (8). To achieve a "profit- ability factor" as a guide for economic mining practice requires further integration of: 1) the value of contained metal or mineral, 2) percentage recovery of values, 3) dilution of ore with waste rock, 4) addition to, or loss of value as a consequence of by-product materials or deleterious components, 5) cost of producing a saleable product plus mini- mum profit to justify the effort (cutoff), and 6) cost of land restoration (7, 11). All these parameters vary with the rock type, rock structure, mineralogy, depth, geometry, mining and metallurgical methods, but they must be sampled and analyzed if sampling and grade control are to reflect profitability. A wide variety of deposits has been presented at this symposium; each deposit with its own problems and special solutions. Deposits containing high unit-value components, e.g. precious metals and diamonds, present special problems in the obtaining of accurate samples and generally require statistical analysis control methods or may disregard or modify occasional high or occasional low values, based upon experience (12 ) Grade control may be accurate for the long term but may vary for the short term. Bulk sampling is always essential. Deposits containing metals or minerals with low unit value are very sensitive to transport costs, and they are often very sensitive to small amounts of deleterious components or differences in physical or chemical behavior. Problems of sampling and grade control change with the genetic type of deposit, with the stage of deposit development and with the size of the information base. Precious metal epithermal deposits (2, 6, 8), because of rapid vertical zonation and erratic lateral distribution of values, have always been difficult to evaluate and maintain grade control and ore reserves. On the other hand, evaluation and grade control are relatively easy in bulk-low- grade deposits (4, 13). However, these deposits generally have a low margin of profit and are sensitive to mining and beneficiaton costs, price fluctuations and political costs. Industrial mineral deposits (5) often must be evaluated on the basis of their behavior, rather than by chemical analysis. Environmental impact generally increases with the scale of the operation, but certain elements or minerals have especially high impact effects (7, 11). In the exploration phase there is no production control of sampling procedures and careful geological observations are particularly essential. The greatest number of problems is related to the oxidized outcrop where the chemical environment of the ore body has changed and the contained values may have been enriched, depleted or values left unchanged (2, 6). Present evidence suggests that gold values may be very mobile under certain conditions (2, 6) and stable under others. Everything must be sampled in detail. Principal values and by-product or deleterious elements may vary dependent upon their position within the soil profile. Such factors as geomorphic position, erosion rate, vegetation, climate, etc., may affect the interpretation (1, 3). This paper is a continuation of two earlier papers,12 and presents new data on the grindability of various ores and other materials—the results of several years of intermittent research work on the nature of grinding and interpretation of test results. It is divided into five parts: 1. The tabulated results of several hundred grindability tests on a wide variety of ores. 2. A method of correcting screen analyses and calculating from them the surface and other properties. 3. A description of a new method of measuring the "surface energy" of an ore by pendulum impact tests. 4. Test results. 5. A general discussion of the test results and their application to grinding problems. 1. GRindability of Various Ores This part is a continuation of the paper listed as reference No. 1. The method of testing is described in detail in that paper. The sample to be tested is crushed to all through 6 mesh in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening in closed circuit with a screen. Of this sample 700 C.C. is ground dry in a laboratory ball mill under constant conditions of mill speed and ball charge in closed circuit with a screen of the desired size at 250 per cent circulating load. The mill is cylindrical, 12 by 12 in., and rotates at 70 r.p.m. It contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams and ranging from 1½ to ¾ in. in diameter. Each test is continued for a sufficient number of periods to establish equilibrium at 250 per cent circulating load, or until the composition of the circulating load is constant for successive periods. Tests are conducted at the mesh size to which the ore is to be ground in practice, and the results are expressed as the net production in grams of screen undersize per revolution of the mill. Automatic recording of the radioactivity of the earth's formations provides a log of relative intensities that, if properly interpreted, can be applied to oil-field engineering. Production, engineering, and geological departments regard the radioactivity log as a forward step in the securing of more conclusive information for successful well completions. Explanations of the technique, together with some of the problems to which radioactivity logging have been applied, are presented in this paper. Introduction Those responsible for the completion of new oil and gas wells, or with planning workover operations on old wells, have followed closely the development of radioactivity well logging because they are interested in reducing the number of unknowns that usually are present in such work. Many operators have made use of the log, or are acquainted with at least one of the applications, but it is unlikely that any one operator is familiar with all of the many applications that are possible. The purpose of this paper is to present a representative example of each of the many applications, wherever the information has been released by an operator, and to illustrate by hypothetical examples other applications, releases for which have not been given. In this way, it is hoped that a better understanding of the scope of this new engineering tool may be obtained. Athough the literature contains many references that describe in detail the theory, development, and application of radioactivity well logging, a brief discussion of the technique may be helpful to those who are investigating the subject for the first time, All rocks contain radioactive material in varying concentrations. In general, shales contain relatively more radioactive material than sandstones or limestones. These radioactive materials disintegrate with time into other materials of lower atomic weight, and in that process of disintegration the rocks are emitting many rays, the most penetrating of which is the gamma ray. The intensity of emission of the gamma ray is proportional to the quantities of radioactive materials present. A higher rate of emission would be observed, therefore, opposite a shale than opposite a sandstone or limestone. Since measurable intensities of gamma rays are capable of penetrating as many as five concentric strings of casing, and as the gamma-ray intensity is relative to the formations, the measurements of variations in gamma-ray intensities offer a means of identifying cased-off formations in their proper stratigraphic sequence. Production, engineering, and geological departments regard the radioactivity log as a forward step in the securing of more conclusive information for successful well completions. Explanations of the technique, together with some of the problems to which radioactivity logging have been applied, are presented in this paper. Introduction Those responsible for the completion of new oil and gas wells, or with planning workover operations on old wells, have followed closely the development of radioactivity well logging because they are interested in reducing the number of unknowns that usually are present in such work. Many operators have made use of the log, or are acquainted with at least one of the applications, but it is unlikely that any one operator is familiar with all of the many applications that are possible. The purpose of this paper is to present a representative example of each of the many applications, wherever the information has been released by an operator, and to illustrate by hypothetical examples other applications, releases for which have not been given. In this way, it is hoped that a better understanding of the scope of this new engineering tool may be obtained. Athough the literature contains many references that describe in detail the theory, development, and application of radioactivity well logging, a brief discussion of the technique may be helpful to those who are investigating the subject for the first time, All rocks contain radioactive material in varying concentrations. In general, shales contain relatively more radioactive material than sandstones or limestones. These radioactive materials disintegrate with time into other materials of lower atomic weight, and in that process of disintegration the rocks are emitting many rays, the most penetrating of which is the gamma ray. The intensity of emission of the gamma ray is proportional to the quantities of radioactive materials present. A higher rate of emission would be observed, therefore, opposite a shale than opposite a sandstone or limestone. Since measurable intensities of gamma rays are capable of penetrating as many as five concentric strings of casing, and as the gamma-ray intensity is relative to the formations, the measurements of variations in gamma-ray intensities offer a means of identifying cased-off formations in their proper stratigraphic sequence. When lime and magnesia are used as fluxes in the smelting of titaniferous ores fluid, digestible slags low in iron oxide and high in titanium dioxide are produced. The mineral phases present in such slags are (Fe,Mg)O.ZTiOp, CaTiO3, and minor amounts of silicate glass (or its devitrification products). The flux additions are added to the ore in relative amounts to crystallize a ratio of (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to CaTiO, of near the eutectic proportions of 60 pct (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 and 40 pct CaTiOl. FeO.TiOz (ilmenite) remains present in the slag until the FeO content is reduced to approximately 8 pct. Optimum slag composition is obtained by reducing the FeO content to between 2 and 6 pct. Continued reduction shifts the (Fe,Mg)O.2TiO2 to oxygen deficient structures classified as MgTi306 and MgTi2O.. Further reduction yields titanium oxycarbides and freezes the melts. The(Fe,Mg)0.2TiO2 structure shows a complete isomorphous replacement of iron by magnesium. It also forms a solid solution compound with as high as 12 mols of TiO2 under reducing conditions without the occurrence of rutile or reduced titanium oxides in the slag.

Thirty years ago, when I stood on the cliff of red fossil iron-ore, on Red mountain, Jefferson county, Ala., I asked what were the geological relations of this remarkable deposit. In reply I was told that it was a limestone, colored and saturated by some unknown but wholly external influences, and that at a reasonable distance from the surface the color would disappear. I could find no satisfactory explanation, either of the nature of this wonderful external permeating influence, or of the cause of such a ferrous impregnation selecting this one particular bed of limestone, to the exclusion of the higher and lower beds of the same material which are not even stained. I. The Present Theory. Referring to this subject, Dana says :' "The clays, clayey sandstones and limestones of the Clinton epoch, through New York and the Appalachians, show that the mud-flats and sand-banks, and hence the shallow seas of the coast region, still continued.... The beds of argillaceous iron-ore, which spread so widely through New York and some of the other States, west and south, could not have been formed in an open sea; for clayey iron-deposits do not accumulate under such circumstances. They are proof of extensive marshes, and, therefore, of land near the sea-level. The fragments of crinoids and shells found in these beds are evidence that they were, in part at least, salt-water marshes, and that the tides sometimes reached them." At first, this explanation seemed satisfactory, but the more I studied the ore the less satisfying the explanation became. 1. HOT-DIPPED heat-treated zinc coatings on sheet steel were examined with X-rays. The phases identified were compared with those listed in the modern literature of the zinc-iron system. The zeta (FeZn13) phase is shown to correspond to the phase found by Schueler (1925) in heat-treated zinc coatings. An investigation was undertaken to determine the phases present in hot-dipped FIG. This kind of coating on wire was studied some years ago by Schueler1 by microscopic and chemical methods. He reported a new phase, FeZn10. Later, Clark and Stillwell,2 using X-ray crystal analysis, identified a new phase in ordinary galva-nized wire, which was assumed to be the FeZn10 phase.

The pressures of urbanization are forcing producers of construction minerals either to transport their product greater distances or find new mineral sources. In areas with significant urban development near the coastal zone, offshore resources may prove to be an economically attractive alternative source. This paper addresses the economic viability of offshore mining of fine mineral aggregate. It proposes a model using a mathematical programming formulation based upon past research on both the onshore construction aggregate industry and the coal industry. The model is then used to assess offshore mining economics in the greater New York metropolitan area. Results show that in this region total consumer cost would be reduced by offshore mining of fine aggregate. In addition, increasing economies of scale could be realized by progressively larger mining operations. The distribution of these savings is also discussed.
