Specifications on the chemical, physical and metallurgical properties of the blast furnace burden are steadily becoming more stringent, especially in those countries where higher raw material and energy costs can be overcome only by improved technology. This paper describes the test methods for the relative predetermination of the criteria where the effects of temperature, gas composition and physical load in the blast furnace are duly considered. Data are presented to show the correlations between burden material tests and blast furnace results. Possible test methods for the direct reduction process are also discussed.

I WISH to express my keen appreciation of the article on the above subject by Coe and Clevenger.1 It has been doubly interesting to me, for the reason that the experience recorded and the principles evolved practically parallel the results of similar investigations made by myself and others at The Lucky Tiger Mine, El Tigre, Sonora, Mex. An outline of the work at El Tigre may aid in confirming the principles expressed by Coe and Clevenger. El Tigre has the unenviable distinction of possessing a slime with a much lower settling rate than any recorded in the article discussed. Under most favorable conditions the settling rate is about one-third that reported for the Liberty Bell mill, and one-tenth that reported for the Nipissing, Golden Cycle, and Presidio mills. This slow settling characteristic of Tigre ore has necessitated careful investigation of settling phenomena throughout the various evolutions of the plant. PREVIOUS SETTLING INVESTIGATION AT TIGRE During construction work at the mill, the Metallurgical Engineer in charge, D. L. H. Forbes, ran a series of experiments on settling. His tests proved that deep settling tanks were not ordinarily necessary. The use of tanks 2 or 3 ft. in depth was suggested.2 Later experiments demonstrated that the following principles of settling applied to Tigre pulp.3 1. In settling dilute pulp, settling rates are independent of pulp depth. 2. In settling thick pulp, settling rates are approximately proportional to pulp depth.4

Prediction of ventilation needs in long range mining projections requires serious consideration when formulating those projections. Predicting the behavior of the ventilation system of an old, complex mine poses an especially provocative problem. Air-flow around and through mined-out areas via bleeder systems, leakage flows through stoppings or other air control devices, and the use of multiple fans all add to the basic complexity of a ventilation system and make predictions of ventilation changes very difficult. Fortunately, the task of making ventilation decisions can be greatly assisted by ventilation surveying and computer simulation. The Nemacolin Mine of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation, located in Southwestern Pennsylvania, is one such old mine which used the computerized approach successfully. A mine-wide pressure-quantity survey was used to obtain realistic values for airway resistance factors. These values, together with network topology, formed the basic input for computer simulation. Results from this simulation indicated that air quantities generated at critical airways by the model were generally within a couple of percent of those measured in the actual survey. It was then concluded that the model was acceptable for practical application, and it was used immediately for studying the effects on the ventilation system of changing the blade settings of fans. Additionally, the model was modified to incorporate projected mine development and used to predict future ventilation.

About a year and a half ago, Mr. Morris, an engineer of the Solvay Process Company, was sent to Belgium and France to study the manufacture of coke in the Semet-Solvay ovens, which were in operation at Havre. With complete plans of construction and a good understanding of the methods of running the ovens, he returned to Syracuse. Work on twelve Semet-Solvay ovens was immediately begun. These ovens, with plant for crushing and washing coal, and the necessary condensers, scrubbers, and concentrator for the recovery of the byproducts are nearly finished, and will soon be in operation. As the work approached completion it became necessary to determine what coal should be used. Accordingly, a chemical investigation of the various bituminous coals was made. I. Investigation of Coals. The samples of coal taken for analysis were: I. A sample of Reynoldsville coal that had been exposed to the weather for a year; 11. Reynoldsville coal taken from a car direct from the mine; 111. Morris Run lump coal; IV. Morris Run fine coal; V. Coal from the Fairmount Coal and Coke Company; VI. A special enginecoal from Pardee colliery, Phillipsburg, Pa.; VII. South Fork, Pa., coal; VIII. BOLIVIA still remains among the oil countries that have proved oil acreage but no production which is being marketed. No steps have been taken during the past year to provide facilities for transport of Bolivian oil to market nor are any known to be contemplated for 1930. The only active operator to date is the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia, subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. The potential production from completed wells is practically unchanged from the 1928 figure of 6000 bbl. daily. As far as is known, there has been only one completion during the year 1929. This is the Machareti well, which is about 50 km. north of Villa Montes along the road to Charagua. The well is reported at about 250 bbl. daily initial production. The gravity of the oil is not known but is presumed to be about 40" Bé., the average for the region. The Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia has five strings working on various parts of its concession. No new locations have been made definitely. Company Activities There was no change in the situation of American holdings in Bolivia during 1929. The oil rights of an English company, acquired under a special colonization contract with the Bolivian Government, are being negotiated in New York and may mean the entrance of another of the large American oil companies in Bolivia. The Sucre Syndicate sold its holdings to the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia during the past year. .A local company called the "Aguila Doble" was formed during 1929 to drill a well or wells near the town of Cochabamba on structures mapped by a local geologist. It is reported that the Government is buying about one-fourth of the capital stock of this company for 500,000 Bolivianos (about $180,000). The company has not yet raised sufficieht funds to buy drilling equipment so that no operations have been started. According to the statements published in La Pas, this company has acreage on seven anticlinal structures near Cochabamba. This area lies about 8500 ft. above sea level on the eastern Hank of the Andes Moun-

PROPERTY of Malartic Gold Fields Ltd. is situa-ated in the great clay belt in the northern part of the Province of Quebec. This belt represents the floor of the glacial lake Barlow-Ojibway. The clay blanket has a gently rolling, almost flat surface, with here and there projecting knobs and ridges that outline the large irregularities of the surface on which the clay was deposited. At irregular intervals glacial eskers dominate the landscape. The ore-bearing country rock is covered by strata of clay, sand, and silt to a depth varying to 40 ft. There are serious structural problems when it is necessary to place loads of unequal intensities on this surface to support buildings and machinery for a modern mining plant. Earlier mining companies and their engineers paid little attention to the science of soil mechanics, partly because they believed it unnecessary and partly because they knew little of the subject. The results are evident in some of the tottering structures in older camps. Careful analysis of soil problems is well worth-while, since cost of foundations may vary from 20 to 50 pct of the final cost of a structure. Low operating and maintenance costs can be achieved only in this way. If it is definitely established that a plant will be in operation for only a few months, this limited time factor will probably influence the design of the foundation, and rightly so. If sensitive and complickted equipment is to be mounted on these foundations and the plant is to operate for several years, there should be a thorough study of foundations and a very careful design. A familiar problem is presented by the difficulty of operating a permanent plant originally designed for a few months' work. The engineer must beware of these hazards and disassociate himself from them if he cannot prevail on the promoter to spend the proper amount for a thorough foundation study. Laws of certain provinces and states hold the engineer equally responsible with the contractor for any 'damage that may be caused to building through inadequate study-ignordnce of the facts is no excuse in the eyes of the law. Types of Soil: The engineer should be familiar with such terms as silt, clay, peat, and varved clay, as well as perpafrost, especially if he is to work in the far northern reaches of the country. He should also be familiar with soil attributes such as porosity, texture, consistency, permeability, compressibility, consolidation, and shearing resistance. The design of any foundation requires an accurate knowledge of the physical properties and location of the soils involved. Older textbooks on the subject outline various empirical methods to determine the carrying power of soil. Tables are given in reference books. The modern ehgineer should be wary of these modes of thinking. He should analyze his problem carefully, calculate to what depth of soil the loads may be transmitted, and then check the bearing value of all soils to that or greater depths. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) IN a discussion -of a paper on " The Basic Process as Applied to Copper Smelting," by Percy C. Gilchrist, read before the Society of Chemical Industry, London, Jan. 5, 1S91,1 Prof. W. C. Roberts Austen asked Mr. Gilchrist whether he thought that the substitution of a basic lining for acid lining in the Marshes process would afford anything like the service which it had been shown to render in the metallurgy, of iron. Claude Vautin stated that he had experimented for over two years with basic linings for Bessemer converters for copper mattes at Cobar, but had given up the attempt on the score of cost. Mr. Gilchrist in his reply stated that he did not believe in applying any system of Bessemerizing to copper. About the time of the presentation of the paper mentioned, Herman Keller, Superintendent of the Parrott smelter, in Butte, was experimenting on a large scale with converters lined with magnesite brick. He gave up the idea on account of the cost of linings and because no particular advantage was observed. My belief is that his tuyeres and converters were -too small. A short time; afterward similar experiments were tried at the Great Falls plant of the Boston & Montana Co., said at the Old Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Anaconda. These were abandoned on the score of cost and the lack of advantages. The same cause of failure, in my opinion, holds here. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co., however, adopted the magnesite brick lining for its tilting casting machines.

THIS subject may be controversial. Personal preferences influence the final selection of cyclones, and side issues such as costs, floor areas, head room, and ease of replacing worn parts all enter the picture, but the following comments and data should apply to most cyclone selection problems. Broadly, the uses for cyclones in wet classification may be divided into three fields: 1) Open circuit operation, for two products, in which feed rate and sizing vary and the products vary. For example, feed may be divided into a sand product and a slime product. 2) Open circuit operation, for two products, in which feed varies, one product to have constant sizing. This calls for adjustment in either the apex or the vortex aperture. 3) Closed circuit operation, the finished product to have constant sizing. Most classification jobs fall in this category.

Laboratory and field tests have shown that it is feasible to log for copper in a qualitative way using the techniques of neutron activation analysis. Laboratory tests showed that the 0.51 and 1.04 mev gamma rays of 62Cu and 66Cu, respectively, could be diagnostic. However, in the core holes, the detection of copper was limited to 0.3% concentration because of interferences from the 18Si and Al gamma rays. Both stationary and continuous logs were made, but only the stationary data yielded a recognizable copper response. This response consists of a combination of two effects-the direct response from copper at 0.51 mev and an increase in low energy gamma ray absorption due to mineralization. Both low energy chemical (PuBe) and high energy accelerator neutron sources were used for the laboratory and field tests, while the same 2 X 5 in. Nal scintillation detector served for all the tests. Potential improvements in copper detection might be possible with solid state gamma-ray detectors which have better gamma ray resolution but much less detection efficiency. This type of activation logging requires complex equipment and trained personnel to conduct field operations and may find application where coring is difficult or prohibitive.

On the basis of experience accumulated during the completion of some 150 gold/silver process development projects, general guidelines are presented for developing the most cost effective process for a specific project. Steps involved in process development for lode ore deposits generally include a review of pertinent background information on the ore deposit, sample procurement and preparation, sample characterization, study of concentration possibilities, investigation of leaching and metal recovery methods, economic evaluation of alternative processes, optimization of the selected process, a pilot plant program if warranted, and finally, process design and feasibility studies. Each of these steps is discussed, with emphasis on the relation between technology and economics.

This paper describes details of the design and operation of a batch tumbling mill which has been used for a number of years in the laboratories at the University of California. In order that the energy expended for grinding can be measured accurately, this specially constructed laboratory mill has sensitive torque measuring apparatus. Torque measurements are given for a variety of conditions with this particular mill. In recent years, there have been numerous and fairly extensive investigations of grinding in tumbling mills reported in the literature. Most of these investigations have been carried out in mills with widely differing dimensions. As a result, comparison of results obtained from various investigations has been virtually impossible. If similar mills were used by different investigators, a considerable step forward would be taken in grinding research. A specially constructed laboratory mill with sensitive torque measuring apparatus has been used for a number of years in the laboratories of the University of California. The purpose of this paper is to describe details of the design and operation of this batch tumbling mill so that other researchers, who might be interested in obtaining data for intercomparison, could construct a similar device for their own research. Furthermore, since torque instrumentation is quite expensive, torque measurements are given for a variety of conditions with this particular mill so that those who may not wish to duplicate torque measuring apparatus can make reasonably accurate torque estimates merely by duplicating the loading conditions. It is not intended in this paper to present theoretical derivations of energy consumption in ball mills. This has been done e1sewhere.l-3 CONSTRUCTION OF THE MILL In order to eliminate rust problems with wet grinding, the mill and grinding media are made of stainless steel. The mill shell was rolled from 1/2-in. steel plate. The inside dimensions are 10-in. diam and 11-1/2-in. length, similar to the mill used by Charles.4 It is equipped with eight lifter bars (1/4-in. in height) whose dimensions are given in Fig. 1. The lifter bars have been bolted into the shell so they can be removed for experiments without lifter bars; however, all data presented here are for the mill with lifters. One end of the mill is fitted with two 1/2-in. diam removable plugs for filling the mill with liquid for wet grinding experiments. As the main source of indigineous energy, coal has a big role to play in the development of national economy of India. Nationalization of the coal mining has brought the entire industry under the unit control of the Central Government following which an ambitious plan for increasing the coal production in the next few five year plans has been undertaken. In order to achieve best all round results, economy-mathematical models of Planning the total system, right from the highest to lowest hierarchial levels of decision making, have been proposed through a Global Model which is detailed in Local Models in stages right up to a mine. Optimum obtained by computer solution of the models would provide basis for objective decision making in the fields of selection of optimum plan for developing the industry, the coal fields and the mines with construction and/or reconstruction of mines, capacity optimization of enterprises and mines therein. Different types of Models and the optimization processes are presented.

WHEN the Age of Machinery was suddenly thrust upon civilization about the beginning of the 19th century, an unprecedented demand for mineral resources sprang up. This demand brought about the rapid development of the known ore deposits and the discovery of such other deposits as could be encountered by energetic and canny prospectors. Thus in the countries now reasonably accessible nearly all orebodies have been located except those which are totally concealed even from the eyes and "senses" of experienced and expert prospectors. The high rate of exhaustion of known ore deposits and the necessity of looking farther and farther ahead for raw materials as a matter of insurance on the stupendous capital outlays involved in mining, development, and conversion operations, have resulted in exceptional activity in three different fields of effort. The first is purely geographic. Prospectors are now penetrating the few hitherto inaccessible regions in the hope of stumbling upon exposed ore deposits or locating visible indications of their presence. The second is chemical. Industrial chemists and metallurgists are seeking to facilitate the exploitation of lower grade ores or to find methods of recovering valuable metals from common substances. In the third field of effort lie the activities of the economic geologist and the mining engineer, who endeavor to locate concealed ore deposits which would remain hidden from the prospector no matter how expert or conscientious he might be. Obviously the task which such a man must face is both exacting and indefinite, and the tools which he has heretofore been permitted to bring to it are, for the most part, abstract-a knowledge of certain fundamental principles and processes involved in the origin, occurrence, structure, and distribution of deposits of natural resources and of the rocks which form the environments of those deposits; and a process. of reasoning by analogy supplemented by the use of the diamond drill, or such artificial exposure as -the test pit, trench, shaft, or tunnel.

Primary attention was focused on the materials handling subsystem because of its potential for improvement from a systems standpoint. A description is given of the computer model and a summary of some applications of the model for improving the rapid excavation process is included.

Cananea is located at an elevation of 5,200 ft in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and about 30 miles south of the United States border. A graded road runs to Cananea from the border town of Naco, near Bisbee, and a branch road turns east to Cananea at Imuris, a town 36 miles south of the border on the Nogales-Hermosillo highway. Railway service is provided by a spur from the Nogales-Naco branch of the Ferrocarril del Pacífico Railroad. Fuel for the power plant, smelter, and town (population approximately 20,000) is natural gas, supplied through a pipeline from the United States. The Compa[n]ía Minera de Cananea generates electric power for its own installations and also supplies both electricity and water to the town. HISTORY The earliest record of mining in Cananea dates back to 1760, when Jesuit fathers worked the Cobre Grande mine for silver in spite of resistance from hostile Indians. About 1800, several mines were worked on a relatively large scale by the House of Guea of Chihuahua. From then until about 1890 when William C. Greene of Fairbanks, Ariz., acquired control of a large group of properties, mining continued in a rather sporadic manner. The mineralized district is approximately 6 miles wide and 15 miles long, and the orebodies are associated with breccia pipes and granitic intrusive rock. In the early days, many small mines operated within the area on high-grade orebodies. CHEAP power is essential to large-scale mining and metallurgical operations, particularly where fine grinding of large tonnages has to be resorted to, as is the case with an increasing number of. mines treating disseminated copper ores, or low-grade gold ores, in the grinding of which considerable power is consumed. A comparison of the cost of generating power with Diesel engines and steam turbines and a brief discussion of the different factors governing the profitable use of either type of prime mover may be timely in view of the importance of. a cheap supply of power to the mining industry, and the prominence that has lately been given to Diesel engines in America. As many of our most important mines and largest producers of metals are located in sections where neither cheap coal nor water power is available, and the price of oil fuel is increased by long hauls, the Diesel. engine will. become a prime mover of increasing importance. This applies particularly to the Southwestern States, where an ample supply of cold water for condensing purposes is unusual and local climatological conditions interfere in securing the high vacua essential to high turbine efficiency. About 12 times as much water will be required for condensing purposes with steam turbines under general conditions as is needed for jacket-cooling of two-stroke, cycle Diesel engine; four-stroke cycle Diesel engines require only one-twentieth of the cooling water. Another condition favoring the use of Diesel engines is the high load factor at which most mine power plants operate. The influence of load factor on the cost of generating power is shown in Tables 1 and 2 and in Fig. 1.

This paper outlines a well proven and highly successful approach for eliminating many of the problem and frustrations often experienced in plant startup. The approach was developed over a period of 25 years during which some 90 plants were commissioned. This paper discusses startup from the contractor’s perspective and highlights the requirement for detailed startup planning, careful coordination during the project final construction phase, and thorough checkout of equipment prior to introduction of feed. Performance of these services has demonstrated a valuable opportunity exists for the contractor to assist in the training of the plant operating personnel.

The selection of centrifugal pumps for mill discharge duty should be based on the total circuit concept. The practice of operating the mill circuit based on limitation of the pump can result in losses in one day which would offset the pump cost. Operating data from 25 grinding circuits have been reviewed and comparative results on added mill capacity have established advantages far beyond the less significant maintenance costs with increased circulating load and better cyclone operation. Mill discharge pumps should be selected on the following basis: i) Best available design for wear performance ii) Size to provide best economic life iii) Liner material best suited to circuit conditions Pump efficiency is a secondary consideration because power consumed by pumps is small compared to mill power input. Energy dissipated in mill pumps is contributing to comminution of ore.

GRACE mine and mill, owned by Bethlehem-Cuba Iron Mines Co. and operated by Bethlehem Cornwall Corp., are being developed to produce 9600 tons of 42 ½ pct Fe magnetite ore, to yield 5760 tons per day of agglomerated iron concentrates averaging 65 pct Fe. Located about 14 miles south of Reading, the property is ideally situated in relation to good highways and railroad. Three major steel plants, at Bethlehem, Steelton, and Sparrows Point, Md., are about equidistant from the mine. Discovery of the orebody resulted from an airborne magnetometer survey, completed in 1948, con¬sisting of 7000 lineal miles of flight lines spaced one-fourth of a mile apart and extending from the Delaware River on the east to Gettysburg, Pa., on the west. After examining the magnetic maps, Bethlehem's geologists made limited surface traverses over the Grace mine and Warwick area to check the location, and realtors were engaged to purchase the desired properties over and adjacent to the area showing favorable indication of ore.
