ONE of the features of the annual meeting was a round table conference on carbon in pig iron, on Feb. 16. This was presided over by R. H. Sweetser, and the discussion, which was so interesting as to require holding an additional session in the after-noon, ranged over such a wide field that only a brief outline of it will be attempted here. The full discus-sion together with the papers will be printed later. The first paper was one on the need for research in foundry pig iron (1648-C) by Richard Moldenke, who pointed out the trend in present practice of attaining low cost in pig iron production by hotter blast, addi-tion of. scrap to the blast furnace, and. the enormous increase in the output per furnace day. He pointed out that remelting processes are oxidizing processes, to some degree at least, and the metal cannot be given the deoxidizing finish which is characteristic of the steel-making process. The trend today is toward specifying total carbon content in foundry pig irons, and since the carbon content depends on a variety of factors, he suggested that the blast-furnace men and the foundry men study the question and agree on a minimum of total carbon for the given silicon ranges. The discussion of this paper was participated in by E. J. Lowry, Robert Jones, T. L. Joseph,. R. H. Sweet-ser, J. G. Ferguson, W. B. Coleman, E. P. Ross and D. J. Demorest and ranged from a comparison of the total carbon used in making a ton of pig iron in charcoal practice versus coke practice to a discussion of the bad effects observable from the use of scrap This paper was followed by one on carbon character-istics of copper-bearing pig iron by W.. B. Coleman. In view of the belief in many foundries that copper-bear-ing pig iron made trouble in the foundry, experiments were made by adding copper in various amounts up to 1 per cent and with the cooperation of the Robesonia Iron Co. a large number of tests were made over a run of foundry iron. The final conclusion was that the ad-dition of less than 1 per cent metallic copper did not seem to alter the physical properties and that a blast furnace using copper-bearing ore can produce pig iron suitable for making small castings, showing low-Brinell hardness test, good transverse and deflection tests, and high-total carbon.

In the maintenance of rubber-tired mining equipment, tires may well represent the single greatest problem. Using a 50-ton truck as an example, engine upkeep averages about 8% of the machine's total yearly operating cost, while tires average a whopping 20%. In fact, depending upon such factors as job layout, conditions, and whether it is maintenance or production people who run the job, tire costs can climb to as high as 50% of the truck's total operating expense. Similar costs apply to other earthmoving equipment such as tractor-scrapers and front end loaders. While operators must resign themselves to "normal" tire life and wear, there are many corrective steps that can be taken to fight the "abnormal."

MELTING in a hearth and in a basket is almost the same thing; charcoal and bellows are used for both. These are made large or small according to the quantity that you wish to melt, and more or less force of the bellows is applied according to the need. The hearth, bowl, or refinery, as the masters call it, is made with bricks and clay like a forge; opposite the middle of the tuyère a round hole is made like a wash- basin, wide at the mouth and narrow at the bottom where there is a hole for emptying it. A little iron plug is put in this so that it may be closed when necessary, or a piece of brick that is cut and pointed. Now, when this has been well covered all over with ashes, and the tuyère has been arranged so that the wind strikes the center, it is first filled with charcoal and baked very well so that the metal may be kept hot once it has been melted. Does an idea have merit? What does it cost to implement? Can the concept be implemented successfully? The ultimate proof is to try, then see. However, when there are many millions of dollars at stake, blindly building and trying requires considerable courage. Owners and investors in retrospect might choose other less complimentary words. So we might ask, "How might we establish the feasibility of an idea or concept before committing large sums of money to the ultimate test?" From this basic and prudent question, has evolved the engineering concept of the feasibility study. A feasibility study is simply a systematic evaluation of an idea or concept to determine the prospects for success. In a literal sense, a feasibility study considers an idea in terms of its data base, "builds" the idea on paper, "operates" that idea, calculates the cost and benefits, then measures the probable success in terms of some economic, technical or financial standard. Feasibility studies can be quite modest in scope yet provide useful insights as to the viability of an idea. A study might be initiated only to examine the completeness or validity of the metallurgical data base. Another study could be a search for a workable idea or solution to an already-identified possibly troublesome problem. In this latter case, the question, "Will it work?" may be far more important than, "How much will it cost?" Feasibility studies are sometimes global in scope, involving several dozens of specialists and examining an entire "grass roots" mining complex. Other studies may be less ambitious but equally important in examining an expansion proposal or developing new operating techniques. Studies may be commissioned to remove plant bottle-necks, solve maintenance problems and so on. The terms study and feasibility study are used interchangeably in this chapter. They denote a systematic method to examine a proposed concept or idea. DATA BASE Typically, studies are initiated with a minimum amount of specific information and a maximum number of assumptions. The ancient copper-mines of Lake Superior, having been destroyed or covered by modern mining-dumps, are not accessible to the present inhabitants of that region, and, since no more are likely to be found, some account of those already discovered, from one who has seen them, may be acceptable to the Institute. Early in May, 1855, I took a party of men to open an ancient pit on the Quincy mine-location. Mr. C. C. Douglas was the " Agent," as mine-managers were then called on Lake Superior. The Quincy Co. had previously done work on a fissure-vein, several hundred feet west of the Amygdaloid lode (afterwards called the Pewabic lode), on which was the ancient pit herein described. 'It was at this pit that the Quincy main shaft was subsequently sunk. The ancient pit showed an apparent depth of about 4 R., but when cleaned out it was shown to he 14 ft. deep, having been filled up by the sliding-in of material composed largely of broken rock, taken out in sinking the ancient shaft, and left near its mouth. Midway of the shaft, and below water-level, was found a scaffolding of white-birch poles, which had been used as a landing, to assist in removing the excavated rock. The shaft was 7 ft. in diameter. The excavation had been done by first building fires in order to disintegrate the rock, as was proved by the abundance of charcoal found; then breaking the softencd rock with hammers of diorite, such as is found in the greenstone range on Keweenaw point. These hammers had about the size of large paving-stones. Only broken ones were found, the whole ones having been doubtless carried away for other work, such as could be traced on the lode for a hundred feet or more to the south. Introduction The stress field around a supported tunnel can be considered as being composed of: i) the virgin (pre-mining) stress in the rock ii) the (elastic) change in this stress field caused by creating the opening iii) the (time-dependent ) change in the stress field produced by (i) and (ii) as a section of the rock breaks up iv) the (time-dependent) influence of the stress build-up in the support. Several authors have examined the conditions necessary to produce static equilibrium between the support, the rock, and the regional (in-situ) stress field. The analysis used by Labasse (1) is typical. Consider a circular tunnel radius R in a hydrostatic stress field (P), and a radial pressure pi exerted by the support. THE discussion of production control at the Insti-tute's annual meeting was profitable in that it started some thinking. One pertinent question there raised was how the opening of new mines, whose now unneeded output would inevitably react on prices, could be postponed until the market was ready to ab-sorb their output. In transportation some restraint is being exercised on building new and unneeded fa-cilities, but in production no general solution of the problem has been offered. Yet in a special field of new development of increasing importance a quick and easy solution has been suggested. I refer to the leasing of mineral deposits on the public domain. The report of the United States Coal Commission says: "In its possession of approximately 60,000,000 acres of public coal lands the Federal Government has its own responsibility in restraining overdevelopment. The Department of the Interior, which has control of these lands under the leasing law, construes the law as giving the department no discretionary right to refuse applications for leases regularly made by qualified citizens or corporations for coal deposits on the pub-lic domain. It presumes, that the applicant believes there is a need for an additional coal mine in his local-ity and expects to find a market for the coal produced. Overdevelopment, however, is a fact in the West as well as in the East, and wherever present involves needless investment and excessive costs of operation. Plainly, the leasing law should be so amended as to give the executive department full discretion in its approval of the opening of a new coal mine on the, public domain, making that approval contingent on the showing that the new mine would serve the in-terest of the consuming public." A similar view of the Federal Government's re-sponsibility in restraining overdevelopment of its oil lands has been presented by the Federal Oil Conser-vation Board. The leasing law vests little or no dis-cretion in the Secretary of the Interior, who must grant a lease to a qualified applicant regardless of any obvious country-wide condition of surplus produc-tion. This wide-open invitation to exploit and dissi-pate the people's own oil resources could be restricted by simple legislation, although as remarked by the board, such a legislative remedy for a plain economic ailment "does not evoke popular support when its purpose is avowedly to put the brakes on development of natural resources."

INTRODUCTION This paper presents the basic principles which must be followed to create a truly inherently safe mining system. The need to relate the support mechanism to be employed to the ground reaction curve and basic rock mechanics principles will be pointed out. The support system must function in concert with the deformations that are inherent in the selected mining system. Following the support selection, the mechanics for installing support must be developed. This is best done through a cooperative effort between mine engineers, mine operators, safety personnel, equipment sup- pliers, and government inspectors both state and federal. Accident statistics, near miss statistics, review of equipment used by others, geologic features, etc. will necessarily have to be studied. The goal of equipment development and selection should be to develop inherent safety by removing the miner from the hazard area or by providing absolute protection for the miner if he must work in close proximity to the potential fall of ground. THE empirical character of plasticity analysis insures a continuing need for measurements of the yield surfaces of anisotropic materials. Recently, Wheeler and Ireland (W-I) proposed that an octahedral yield locus could be constructed on the basis of six Knoop hardness indentations. Such simplicity would have obvious appeal, if it led to consistently dependable results. In other recent work, a much more straightforward (and more tedious) method of measurement was used to establish all quadrants of the plane-stress yield loci for two substantially anisotropic titanium alloys.2,3 The same materials have since been reex-amined by the W-I method with results being reported here. A full description of the stress state under a Knoop indentor would be complex. In principle, however, this can be avoided in relating the hardness number to a plane-stress yield locus, by the expedient of superimposing the appropriate hydrostatic component on that state of stress. Six possible orientations of in-dentor on orthogonal (symmetry) planes, along (principal) coordinate directions, are illustrated in Fig. 1(0). Pictured in Fig. l(b) are normal-stress components nominally associated with indentation n: o2(H), directly proportional to the Khn in this case, together with By overlaying a hydrostatic tension, ah, that in general is equal to the stress state around the indentation is reduced to one of plane stress in the x-y plane for which the stress ratio is a The key step in the W-I yield-locus construction is to represent the Khn for any indentor orientation as a vector quantity on the octahedral plane. In the plotting, the vector is given as deviatoric stress components along the principal axes in the ratio , where represents the direction of the minor (width) diagonal and 1 that of the major (length) diagonal. There is no attempt by W-I to justify the 7/1, although it might be supposed that the value originates in the usual ratio of major to minor diagonals in a Knoop indentation of about 7/1. If that were its origin, the link to the deviatoric stress ratio would presumably be made by first taking 7/1 and then turning to the Levy-Mises equation for isotropic material: Interpreted in this way, the W-1 approach seems arbitrary and even contradictory. Yet it would still be favored by two circumstances: the deformation under a Knoop indentor approaches plane strain: when dcw/del =a; and the shape of the locus where plane strain is represented is not overly sensitive either to the exact value of dc,/dcl or to the degree of anisotropy, within a rather wide range of both variables. In 1877 the Pennsylvania Railroad Company removed an old bridge from its line at Duncannon, Pa., built intermediate piers and erected shorter spans of the Pratt truss type, which had previously been in use on another portion of the road. The design of this truss would not admit of diagonals larger than 19 inches diameter, and in order to stiffen the bridge somewhat steel rods were introduced for the main diagonals in the first and second panels, 19 inches and 18/8 inches diameter respectively. These rods were threaded without upsetting, and by the ordinary formulae the strains were of the same intensity upon both, viz., 16,000 pounds per square inch with the maximum loading. The other main diagonals in the truss are 19 inches diameter, and of iron. It was specified for the steel rods: Elastic limit,.......46,000 Ibs. Tensile strength,. .. ,. .. 80,000 lbs. Elongation,,.,.,. 20 per cent. The steel was procured without difficulty, and it allowed a factor of safety of 23/4 at elastic limit, while a similar factor of 2½ had for a long time been successfully used for iron. In the course of three years, from time to time, six of these steel rods broke, three of them being 18 inches in diameter, and three 19 inches in diameter. The broken rods were tested, and three of them analyzed at Altoona to ascertain the cause of failure, and what modifications should be made in the steel for such service. Examination showed that all the rods were broken in detail close under the nut. The threads were well cut and properly rounded at the root. testing the rods micrometer screws, reading to .0001" with c bell to signal the contact, were attached to the test pieces, and by this means the modulus of elasticity and elastic limit accurately obtained.

GEORGE F. COMSTOCK (author's reply to discussion*).-Mr. Thum's description of the effects of butt welding and spot welding on the micro-structure of steel are interesting and timely. The speed with which the changes noted by Mr. Thum must take place is indeed remarkable, but the writer has noted a similar very rapid diffusion of carbide in annealing a t a rather high temperature certain samples of soft sheet steel containing massive cementite segregated on a small scale. The massive cementite in such steel can be dissolved and distributed very quickly if the proper temperature is attained. Mr. Thum's explanation of the structure he found in the spot welds seems entirely reasonable, but the mystery of the decarburized material in the butt weld is one that might well be the subject of further research. The possibility of decarburization by air ,might perhaps be worthy of a little more consideration than he gives it, for the oxides formed would be gaseous on account of the presence of carbon, and hence not visible in the microscope, and the effect of the pressure might be to squeeze the carbon oxides, which would normally form blow-holes, out of the metal or possibly into such small volumes as not to be noticed The removal of carbon by liquation and squeezing into the fin would be an effect similar to the "bleeding" of a steel ingot that is rolled while the center is still liquid, giving a soft low-carbon interior in the finished section while the segregate was removed in cropping the pipe. This effect in Mr. Thum's butt welds could, however, only be obtained if the weld was heated to near the melting point of the steel, and if the carbon was considerably segregated in the bars at the start, for the first effect of the high temperature would be to promote diffusion rather than the contrary segregation and Equation. It is gratifying to learn from Dr. Ruder's remarks that his researches have resulted in no disagreement with the few points brought out by the writer's experiments. In addition to the three forms in which nitrogen may occur in iron that he mentions, it would seem that a fourth form is often found; This is apparently a eutectoid, like pearlite, and sometimes almost as coarse as the massive cementite seen in soft steel sheets that have been annealed for a long time. One of the things needed in the metallographic study of steel is an etching reagent that will distinguish definitely between nitride in this form and the more common pearlite or cementite.

In solution-mining of underground salt and similar minerals, using drilled wells for access, it is desirable to monitor the lateral growth pattern of the resulting fluid-filled cavern. Therefore, a process of seismic surveying from the surface of the ground has been conceived in which the amplitudes of waves reflected from and transmitted through the soluble formation are measured. The large acoustic impedance contrast between solid and fluid should produce striking amplitude anomalies, especially if shear waves are employed, since thick fluid bodies are opaque to shear waves. Horizontally-polarized (SH) shear waves are best for preventing conversion to P waves at the numerous horizontal interfaces in the ground. Field tests to date have shown that a truck-mounted, half-ton hammer striking horizontally against the end of a trench produces usable SH-wave energy at lateral distances up to about 850 ft. Horizontally-directed explosive wave sources were effective to about 2000 ft. Conventional magnetic-tape recording and processing were used, but with the detecting geophones oriented to favor SH waves. An irregular solution cavity in bedded salt at 500-ft depth has apparently been located by SH-wave and SV-wave reflections. Further field work is planned to corroborate and extend this result. The Brine Cavity Research Group, an association of 11 chemical and salt producing companies, is supporting this work. Major deposits of salt in tabular beds lie beneath some 300,000 sq miles of land in the central and northeastern U.S. This salt is a basic source of soda ash and chlorine, and has been extracted as brine from drilled wells for about a century. During the past two decades, the U.S. solution-mining industry, following the lead of European operators, has greatly improved the extraction process through the application of engineering and science.' In 1957, the Brine Cavity Research Group, an association of 11 chemical and salt producing companies, was formed. This group proceeded to attack certain common problems through the support of research. An outstanding problem has been that of determining the shape and location of the growing solution cavities in the underground salt, so that measures can be taken to maintain operating efficiency. The problem has been partially solved by the Dowel1 sonar mapping service, which employs a pulse-echo device lowered into the cavity through the well.2 However, the working range of this equipment is at present insufficient for large cavities, and echoes are not returned from highly sloping walls nor from behind such obstructions as rock debris. Therefore, an independent means of mapping the cavity, for example, from the surface without interfering with operation of the well, would be desirable. THEORY OF THE METHOD Seismic waves are the only physical agent known to be capable of sufficient resolution and penetration to define typical solution cavities from the surface of the ground. The geometry is unfavorable: cavity widths are generally less than half their depths below the surface; resolution and lateral location of boundaries and channels to within 50 ft at depths of 500 to 3000 ft is desirable. Conventional seismic surveying, as used for petroleum prospecting, is probably not the answer: isopach mapping, for example, is not thought accurate enough to define the cavity by the slight additional delay time it would introduce (of the order of 0.005 sec for a 50 ft-thick cavity in hard Paleozoic rocks). Refraction surveying has also been considered, but seismic specialists see little promise in it for this problem. In 1957, in correspondence with industry personnel, the writer suggested a seismic method based upon careful measurement of reflection amplitudes. As Table I illustrates, seismic reflection coefficients r for typical brine-rock interfaces are considerably higher than those for typical interfaces between different kinds of solid rock. This fact can be utilized in two ways, illustrated in Fig. 1: 1) If the cavity roof is reasonably flat (which it may sometimes be since the unsaturated top brine will be in contact with an insoluble rock stratum), extra-strong seismic reflections will be received from the salt stratum where the solid has been replaced by liquid.

At present the manufacture of metallic zinc, or spelter, in Missouri, is carried on only at the establishments located at Carondelet, or South St. Louis. Although the development of the industry has not yet reached that fulness which it has attained elsewhere in the United States, still the commanding advantages of position of these establishments are so evident that the prospective importance and magnitude of spelter manufacture in this State, and especially at this locality, can hardly be doubted. A study of the chemical and technical aspects of the business of these points cannot be without interest to the metallurgist as well as to the capitalist. I have endeavored to investigate, as far as was practicable, within the limits of a paper of this character, some of the problems connected with this industry, at the same time making a few comparisons of the results attained at some of the Carondelet works with those of other establishments with regard to which information could be obtained. In the prosecution of these studies I have been kindly aided by the managers of Carondelet establishments, and by Prof. Charles P. Williams, Director of Rolla School of Mines. To the latter I am especially indebted for assistance in regard to methods of analysis. To all these gentlemen I return my thanks for their valuable aid. Other sources of information will be duly credited in their proper places.

Mines are closed for two reasons; exhaustion of ore or insufficient price for the mineral. On the other hand, the reopening of an old mine can be the result of any one of three events; the discovery of more ore, a sudden rise in the price of the product or the use of a new low-cost method of mining or milling the ore. Examples of the latter would be the open-pitting of an orebody previously mined underground as recently happened at Tyrone, N.M., or the adoption of acid leaching of an old pit as has been done at Miami, Ariz. The unique native copper mines of the Keweenaw Peninsula of upper Michigan have not been so fortunate. These deposits, which were first worked by prehistoric Indians, have been mined continuously from the early 1840's to 1968 when the last mines of Calumet and Hecla were closed and the Ahmeek mill. still using eight Nordberg steam stamps, was shut down. There are two types of deposits from which native copper is obtained; amygdaloid, which is a lava flow, and conglomerate, a sedimentary deposit of sand, rock fragments and pebbles cemented together. "In the amygdaloid, the copper is disseminated, or distributed much like the raisins in a cake; but in the rich Calumet conglomerate, the copper is more like a malleable rope or thread cementing the pebbles together." (C. Harry Benedict. Red Metal: The Calumet and Hecla Story, (Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1952), p. 42.) These deposits produced almost all of the copper used by the North in the Civil War and were substantial contributors to the copper needs of the United States in both World Wars. Some were mined to depths of as much as 9500 ft along the dip of the vein structure and 7500 ft vertically. Few of the mines ever really became worked out, but became uneconomical because of depth, pinching of veins or grades which dropped to about 1%.

IN the most general sense, solidification refers to the formation of crystalline material from either a gas or a liquid. However, in this symposium, only the formation of crystals from liquids will be considered. Thus, in our present study the problem of solidification becomes that of determining the mechanism of the transition from a liquid to a crystalline solid, and our particular interest is in the transformation of metals from the liquid to the crystalline state. Metal liquids are seldom composed of only one kind of atom. Often solute atoms are added intentionally to make an alloy, or they may be present accidently because of incomplete purification. Furthermore, there may be small solid particles of various other crystals present in the liquid. Such small crystals may persist if their melting points are higher than any temperature to which the liquid is heated. Prior to solidification, the liquid metal usually is poured from one container to another. The second container, called the mold, usually is at a lower temperature than the container, or the crucible, in which the metal is liquified. The first solid that forms upon contact with the mold generally is of a different composition than the liquid, usually containing fewer foreign atoms or dissolved impurities. Heat is evolved upon solidification and is dissipated through the surroundings. Tree-like crystals, or dendrites, grow from the container walls and branch into the melt, enriching the remaining liquid in impurity atoms. In some alloys the remaining, relatively impure liquid continues to solidify until no liquid remains and the branches of the original crystal are cemented together. In other alloys, particles with a second type of crystal structure appear before solidification is complete. First the nature of the liquid and the solid states will be considered and then the mechanism of the initial formation of crystals from pure and alloy liquids. Later the problem of the growth of these crystals and the complexities of solidification in a mold, where the temperatures are not uniform and the composition of the melt changes continuously, will be discussed. LIQUID AND CRYSTALLINE STATES A liquid is an aggregate of atoms arranged with no apparent regularity (over distances of more than a few atom diameters). Nevertheless, any given atom generally has a definite number of nearest neighbors at definite distances, and thus order may be said to exist over a short range. In a crystal, on the other hand, a regular array of atoms continues for many hundreds or thousands of atom diameters, and a long-range order is apparent. Thus, a crystal having long-range order can be reproduced by linear translations for 10-5 cm or more of some fundamental unit possessing short-range order. A crude illustration of the difference between liquid and crystalline structures can be obtained by comparing the possible arrangements of oranges in a crate. If the oranges are simply dumped into the crate haphazardly until it is filled, the oranges will represent a static model of a liquid.

Discussion of the paper of Woolsey McA. Johnson, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1137 to 1145. F. L. GRAMMER, Leesburg, Va. (communication to the Secretary *):-Mr. Johnson's paper must interest by suggestion those connected with the " burning " of lime, the production of cement, and the smelting of iron. All iron men know how quickly the impalpable purple ore of wet origin reduces compared to finely ground red hematites of approximately identical composition obtained from Lake lump ores. Most housekeepers appreciate that the several forms of carbon-charcoal, coke, and anthracite, not to include graphite and diamond -have different temperatures of ignition. The temperature usually rises with the density and hardness. Some of the scientific bureaus of the government might appropriately conduct some tests along lines suggested by Mr. Johnson's article. We are unable to say whether the topic lies within the spheres of activity of the Bureau of Mines, the Bureau of Soils (Agricultural Department), the Geological Survey, or the Bureau of Standards. The calcining qualities of limestone is a topic too wide for individual effort and is of wide enough interest to merit government or State activity. It is of interest, as aforesaid, to burners of lime, cement manufacturers, and smelters. The chemical composition of a limestone does not tell all the story -if over 1-in. size lumps. The limestones of Annville and Myerstown, Pa., break at a tap; those on the Hudson above Poughkeepsie .act like "nigger heads." The manager of lime kilns near Lake Champlain told me his fuel consumption was high compared to that at other points. Yet the Hudson and Annville stones were both of greatest purity, being rivaled by only the marble at Rutland, Vt., or some stones near Martinsburg, W. Va. A local kiln operator says the conglomerate or pudding limestones of Loudoun county, Va., act very differently in the kiln from the more normal limestone deposits nearby. The tilted and twisted bedding in the anthracite region tells the story of hard coal origin. We might therefore expect that the limestones of greater geological age or depth or metamorphism

GOODALE, Butte, ,Mont.-While there are many points in Mr. Read's, paper which I am not prepared to discuss thoroughly, I am inclined to believe that difficulties are involved in the establishment of all employment bureau, which shall have exclusive control over the employment and discharge of workmen. I suppose you .have heard a great deal: about the so-called "rustling card? at the works of the Anaconda company. That is a very innocent sort of card, although the I. W. W. organization has made a great deal of noise about it. An applicant for a job is handed a blank on which he tells his nationality, his age, whether married or single, and the place of his last employment. The company then writes to the place where he says he was last employed to find out whether he is telling the truth; we do not ask the previous employer whether the man is blacklisted or has anything; against his record; but simply, "Was this man formerly in your employ?" A great hullabaloo has been made, about this practice by some of the men in Montana who are afraid, of their own records; but out of 53,000 applications for employment received by the Anaconda company since the employment bureau was formed, only 647 were rejected, which does

The first to appreciate and foresee the value of applying electrical measurements to structural studies was Prof. Conrad Schlumberger, Professor of Physics at the School of Mines in Paris. One of his earliest practical undertakings in this line was carried out, in the field, at Fierville-la-Campagne, Normandy, in 1912. His book, published in 1920, still stands as an authoritative, fundamental treatise on the use of the electric current in geological studies, in spite of the rapid evolution of geophysics during the last seven years. A remarkable feature of this book is that, even then, it stressed the role of electricity in structural investigations and made public the first successful results obtained therewith. Stratigraphic studies have been pursued continuously by Conrad Schlumberger and his associates since 1912, the only interruption being the World War. The results attained demonstrate the wide possibilities of electrical exploration in structural work. This field of activity is, at the least, as varied and valuable as the search for ore. It is curious that until very recently it has so slightly attracted the attention of geophysicists and geologists on this continent. The purpose of this paper is to present briefly some examples of the practical application of the potential methods to geological studies. These examples are chosen from a number of problems solved in the field by our firm, in the course of its consulting practice. Certain fundamental points are briefly stated before the field operstions and interpretations are described. Conductivities of the Rocks Compared with metallic substances, rocks are poor conductors. However, it would be a grave error to affirm that they are completely insulating and that no electrical current can flow through them. It is surprising to encounter, even now, in certain discussions about the applicability of the potential methods, deductions based on this assumption that rocks are absolutely nonconductive.
