It is characteristic of most scientific investigators that they are not satisfied with the discovery of new facts, no matter how curious or unexpected, but that along with the factual discovery there is a constant effort to understand. It appears that one's interest in, and satisfaction with, the discovery of an array of new experimental facts is enormously increased if one has at the same time a theory or hypothesis guiding one's expectation of what sort of new experimental discovery may lie around the corner. Conversely, as a theoretical physicist one's satisfaction with his theory is greatly enhanced if along with the development of the theory can go the discovery of new experimental facts, confirming or perhaps modifying the theory as it grows. Of course, there have been long arid stretches in the history of physics in which new data of unquestioned ultimate importance have piled up, without much inspiration or illumination in the way of understanding. For 50 years spectroscopy had such an arid history, but how irksome this was felt to be is plainly shown by the almost audible relief that greeted the first success by Bohr in injecting understanding into the situation, and by the fresh rush of experimenters into this field when the prospect of understanding had once been offered. The investigations in the field of high pressure, which have occupied me for a long time,' until the last few years have been in very much the same sort of situation as spectroscopy before the advent of Bohr. A great many kinds of data were collected for a great many solid and liquid substances, and there could be no question of the importance of these data, because the uniform change of dimensions produced by hydrostatic pressure is perhaps the simplest conceivable type of alteration to which a body can be subjected. But except for a few isolated flashes, there was no theoretical illumination, so that it had to be to a large extent the enthusiasm of the collector that kept me going. The object of this paper is to present a brief outline of the methods of geologic mapping employed in the Geological Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, and to show by means of a few typical examples the practical nature of the results obtained. The extremely complicated geological conditions early encountered in Butte mining led mine operators to realize the necessity of accurate detailed geologic mapping m an aid to successful development of the ore bodies. The organization of the Anaconda Geological Department was undertaken in 1900 by H. V. Winchell, who, in conjunction with D. W. Brunton, worked out the essential methods of procedure which are, in the main, followed at the present time. Since the year 1906 the geologic work has been under the direction of Reno H. Sales, and in some respects the scope of the work has been slightly enlarged. An excellent article describing the general equipment of the geological department was presented by D. W. Brunton at the British Columbia meeting of the Institute in 1905.' His idea, that data collected underground and recorded should be put to practical use and not remain a mere " inventory of the company's underground possessions," is the keynote to the success of applied geology in Butte. The geologic notes are taken as soon as possible after the ground is broken so that any mistake in the mining may be corrected at once, or any particularly advantageous procedure may be suggested before any useless work is done. Taking the notes underground is a comparatively simple matter, but a few necessary precautions may be pointed out. The essential to success is that the notes shall show exactly what geological facts are disclosed. The observer must discriminate carefully between important and unimportant exposures in making the record, especially as regards the relation between veins and stringers, between faults and minor slips, or between the characteristics of veins of different ages. The new 4800-ton fine-grinding plant at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines property at Timmins, in the Porcupine district of northern Ontario, went into operation in November 1937, and represents the culmination of an experimental program. The plant is a moderately low rectangular building of hollow tile on a steel frame, large enough to house four 7 by 15-ft. ball mills, with a 12 by 27-ft. classifier beside each mill. At one end is space for the addition of another mill and classifier or a mill and classifier for the regrinding of table concentrates. This regrinding is now done in the old grinding department of the main mill building. Also within the new building are the four 6-in. sand pumps for lifting the product from the low-dis-charge ball mills up to the classifier feed launders and the containers and appurtenances of a complete dust-collecting system. Together with the usual overhead crane, these constitute the major units of equipment within the new plant. The location is at the lower end of the main mill buildings toward the old tailings pond, now so neatly leveled off and sodded to rival the very best of our own W.P.A. projects. Close by the new grinding plant is a large dome-shaped structure—the new fine-ore bin designed and built by Mr. Longmore and the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs. There are four separate automatically loaded inclined belt conveyors leading up from the bottom of the bin to the grinding plant. Each belt is equipped with a recording weightometer, in the grinding building. The whole structure and the machinery within it give the impression of permanence and a carefully integrated design with close attention to details, giving the operators every advantage for consistently good work. The many ideas and opinions behind this achievement were all ably organized and executed by the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs, and not a few were directly initiated by them. IT has long been recognized that it would be highly desirable to be able to predict the temperatures at various points in a burning fuel bed and their variations with changes of the properties of the fuel and the rate of air supply. Experimental investigations of fuel-bed tempera-tures1-4 have not been lacking, but the absence of any theoretical back-ground has made it impossible to use the results of these tests as a basis for prediction, except in a very general way. A mathematical analysis5, based on a somewhat simplified theory of the distribution of heat in a, fuel bed, has recently been completed by the author. Even though numerical values of some of the coefficients are not. known, the calcula-tions result in some conclusions of general significance. Thus, for example, it appears that when the temperatures throughout the fuel bed can be calculated, the rate at which ignition of the fuel by underfeed action can be maintained can also be calculated. The uncertainty concerning the values of the coefficients referred to above is a serious limitation on the use of that method. The following paper presents a discussion of these coefficients and includes estimates of their values based on the data now available. A brief description of the theory on which the analysis is based, and some results of the calculations showing their degree of agreement with experimental results, are presented by way of introduction to the discussion of, the coefficients. Re crystallized TD-nickel mi-2Th0,) in both coated und uncoated conditions was fatigued at 1800°F at total strain ranges varying .from 0.2 to 0.75 pct. The fatigue life of uncoated inaferal, Nf, was related to the total strain range, ?eT, by (2Nf/021AeT = 0.014. A duplex Al-Cr pack coating increased the fatigue life by about a factor of two. The cracks that led to failure in both coated and uncoated material were initiated at the outer surface, indicating that the mechanical properties of the surface layers were important in determining fatigue life. Crack propagation and subsurface crack initiation in the TD-nickel occurred preferentially at grain boundaries with cavitation at thoria particle-matrix interfaces an integral part of the grain boundary fracture process. The importance of both the grain morphology developed during thermome chanical processing of TD-nickel and the distribution of thoria particle sizes to fatigue resistance are discussed. THE fatigue properties of only a few dispersion-strengthened metals have been studied at temperatures 0.5 Tm;1,2 among these have been lead and aluminum containing oxide dispersions. TD-nickel is a material of interest for application in aircraft gas turbine engines, but little fundamental information is available on its behavior under cyclic loading conditions. In this study, the low-cycle fatigue properties of TD-nickel were determined at 1800°F with emphasis on the 101-lowing; 1) the relation of the grain morphology produced during thermomechanical processing to crack initiation and propagation; 2) the role of thoria parti-cles in the fracture process; and 3) the effect of an oxidation resistant coating on fatigue life. I) MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The TD-nickel was supplied by DuPont as a 5/8-in. thick plate which had been subjected to a proprietary series of thermomechanical treatments with a final anneal at 2000°F for 1 hr in hydrogen. The composition of the material is given in Table I. At the test temperature of 1800°F, the 0.2 pct offset yield stress was 15,000 psi, and the elongation and reduction in area were 4.6 and 3.0 pct, respectively. The microstructure of this material has been previously described.&apos; Briefly, it consists of an array of lath-shaped grains, about 0.15 mm in thickness, with the long dimension of each grain parallel to the primary working direction, Fig. 1(a). The presence of very small annealing twirls, Fig. l(b ), together with the absence of extensive dislocation networks, Fig. L/C), indicated that the material was in the recrystal- Table I. Commercial TD-nickel sheet has a similar grain size and shape, but unlike the present material is not recrystallized as evidenced by the absence of annealing twins and the presence of a well-developed dislocation substructure.4 The plate material had Young&apos;s moduli in the rolling direction of 22 x 106 psi and 13 x 106 psi at room temperature and 1800°F, respectively, indicating a texture with a strong {100}<001> component in agreement with previous observations on recrystallized TD-nickel sheet.596 The 2.3 vol pct of thoria particles were uniformly distributed although some clustering and stringering of larger particles was occasionally seen. The average diameter of the particles was 450 and the calculated mean planar center-to-center spacing was 2100Å. Two specimens were coated with a duplex A1-Cr pack coating. The coating was somewhat nonuniform from one position to another along the gage length. An area of the coating after testing is shown in Fig. 2. Electron microprobe analysis revealed the following zones in the various lettered regions indicated in Fig. 2: A) a bcc matrix of B-NiA1 with some chromium in solid solution along with a fine dispersion of a chromium-rich second phase which was probably precipitated during cooling from the test temperature to room temperature; B) fcc y&apos;-Ni,Al with some chromium in solid solution; C) porosity; D) a two-phase mixture of a chromium-rich solid solution containing nickel and aluminum and a small volume fraction of a nickel-rich solid solution having approximately the same composition as the immediately adjacent portion of region E, E) the TD-nickel substrate containing chromium in solid solution to a depth of 5 to 10 mils. As expected from the nature of the diffusion processes involved,7 the thoria particles were present only up to the layer of porosity, region C, Fig. 2. The measured thickness of the coating proper, zones A to D, after testing was 1 to 2 mils. The specimen design and testing techniques have been previously discussed.&apos; Stressing was axial and parallel to the lath-shaped grains (i.e., parallel to the rolling direction). The total strain range was controlled between zero and a maximum tensile strain varying from 0.2 to 0.75 pct. R. W. Jones (Senior Exploration Geologist, Standard Oil Co. of California, Box 250, Seattle, Wash.) -Mr. McRae6 and his colleagues are to be congratulated for providing a more coherent structural synthesis of the complex structure in the Courtland-Gleeson area, Cochise County, Arizona, than the "gigantic thrust breccia" concept of Gilluly. 4 However, a few problems of interpretation remain. It is the intent of this note to point out some of these problems, and, drawing on my own work in the area as well as the work of McRae6 and Gilluly, 4 to suggest some interpretations which differ from those previously published. GRAVITY SLIDES In an unpublished manuscript (Jones5) I previously argued that most of the complex structures in the Courtland-Gleeson area can be most reasonably interpreted in terms of gravity sliding caused by uplift and eastward tilting of Jurassic intrusives and associated Paleozoic rocks. Although the field work and drill hole data described by McRae6 provided excellent documentation for two important gravity slides, McRae6 interpreted the basic structure in the Courtland-Gleeson area in terms of major eastward directed thrusting. The deposits described in this paper occur over much of Wayne County and in the southeast portion of Hardin County, Tennessee, and in the northeast and northwest portions of Mississippi and Alabama respectively. The presence of tripoli in this region has been known for some time and descriptions of various occurrences in Tennessee have been made by Jewelll and Miser2, while Hilgard3, Lowe4 and Logan5 have treated the deposits that occur in the adjacent portions of Alabama and Mississippi, but there has not been a &apos;general survey of the entire field summarizing completely the geology of the deposits with respect to their origin and stratigraphic relationships. During 1934, while engaged in surveys of mineral resources through this region for the Tennessee Valley Authority, the writer collected data with this in mind, and has assembled them in this report. He is indebted to H. S. Rankin and N. A. Rose, of the Tennessee Valley Authority Geology Division, for field assistance. Location of Tripoli Deposits Fig. 1 shows the locations of deposits of tripoli in a long belt that extends from northeast Wayne County southwestward into northwest Alabama and thence passes into Mississippi, where the formations carrying it are finally covered by Cretaceous sand and gravel of the Mississippian Embayment. Occasional deposits occur also in the southeastern corner of Hardin County, Tennessee. While tripoli is found at nearly all points along this axis where the related formations are exposed, the largest deposits are grouped about three different centers. Waynesboro-Collinwood District.—In the area between Waynesboro and Collinwood, in Wayne County, Tennessee, tripoli of various grades outcrops in the valley of Green River and in tributary valleys on either side. This district is roughly 12 miles long in a northeast-southwest direction and has a maximum width of 5 miles at its northern end. The need for a low-strength cementing composition for use in well cementing is reviewed and results are presented of laboratory and experimental field tests of a modified cement having a controlled ultimate tensile strength of approximately 200 psi. The modified cementing composition may he prepared from either high early strength or normal portland cements by the addition of bentonite clay and a suitable agent for dispersing and controlling the set of the slurry. Substitution of the modified cement for conventional slow-set cements may give better completion results in many wells because the modified cementing composition has lower set strength, lower slurry density, and greater slurry stability than conventional cement slurrieh. The lower ultimate strength allows greater penetration with less shattering of the set cement when perforating casing and cement. The lower elurry density allows the placement of longer columns of cement slurry, and the greater slurry stability reduces the possibility of having an uncemented section caused by the settling of cement particles before the cement set.. INTRODUCTION High strength lias always been one of the accepted criteria of a good cement. During the early use of portland cement in well cementing. emphasis was placed upon securing cements with higher strengths. In 1931, Barkis&apos; reported that, "Normal oil well cements have been improved to develop greater strengths and uniformity of product, which has aided in producing successful jobs in cementing the deeper strings." As long as most wells were completed by the open-hole method. the use of cements having high strengths seemed desirable, and there was no objection raised against high-strength cementing compositions. For a number of years. how-ever, the industry has been completing a large numher of wells by setting and cementing casing through productive horizons and then obtaining production by gun-perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval. Although this method has been generally successful, difficulties have been experienced in some cases in completing or recompleting wells because of apparent lack of adequate penetration by the bullets through the casing and surrounding sheath of cement and into producing formation. In addition to the penetration trouble: there have been indications that fracturing and shattering of the set cement by perforating might he a contributing factor in causing the failure of some jobs to exclude water or gas from oil producing zones. The possibility that cements having high set strengths were contributing to til difficully ill obtaining satihfartory perforating results has re. ceived attention during recent years. Gun perforating tests conducted in 1944 showed that the depth of bullet penetration into set cement varied with the hardness of the cement, the greater the strength of the cement the less being the penetration. In 1946, Farris2 pointed out that high strength cements were not needed in well cementing, and in 1947, data published by Oliphant and Farris3 showed that set cement was perforated without shattering at approximately 150 psi tensile strength. whereas at approximately 300 psi tensile strength severe cracking and shattering occurred. Oliphant and Farris suggested that wells be perforated at the proper time interval after placement of the cement so that the set cement would have the desired strength. Several difficulties may he encountered in trying to perforate a cement job at the correct time to catch the tensile strength near 150 psi. The rate of strength development of different cements varies considerably. This fact is illustrated by results of tensile strength measurements presented in Fig. 1. These data show that at 175°F the tensile strengths of three conventional slow-set cements varied from 75 to 235 psi at the end of 12 hours. After 24 hours, the tensile strengths varied from 200 to 455 psi. The rate of strength development is affected. also. by the temperature of the forniation, and this adds to the uncertainty of perforating at the rorrect time, since accurate well cementing temperatures may not he known in many cases. Furthermore, in the recomple-tion of wells it is sometimes necessary to perforate cement which has set for a long period and has developed maximum or final strength. The factors that determine the yield and crystal size in the two-temperature synthesis of A lp were examined. Low yields and small crystals were associated with low temperatures and pressure. Attempts to grow large crystals in the critical and supercritical region of phosphorus were unsuccessful. Crystal size increases markedly at elevated temperatures. Crystals grown at temperatures as high as 1450° C fluo-resced, under uv excitation, at energies close to the estimated band gap of about 2.4 ev, while crystals grown at lower temperatures tended to fluoresce in the red region of the spectrum. Those grown in the supercritical region showed no ALP fluorescence. Heating the high-temperature-grown ALP under vacuum greatly increased its fluorescence efficiency and moved the emission peak to higher energies. I HE III-V compounds, with few exceptions, have been prepared by the two-temperature method. In its classic form this technique is applicable to closed systems where at least one of the components, in this case the column V element, is a liquid or a solid with a high vapor pressure. One advantage of this method over flow systems is in its simplicity. In addition, because it is a closed system, it can, under the circumstances to be described later, be run at higher pressures of the volatile species than in flow systems. In instances where the III-V compound is soluble in the parent III metal to about 1 mol pct or higher, solution growth can be made to take place by slow cooling. This, for instance, is one way in which single-crystal GaP1 and Inp2 have been grown. Initial attempts to synthesize and grow A1P by this technique were not too successful; the yield was low and the crystals obtained were exceedingly small. The conditions required for improving the yield and growth by this technique were, therefore, sought. Two obvious conditions which could be controlling were examined. These were the temperature of the aluminum and the pressure of the phosphorus. The range of temperatures studied extended from about the melting point of aluminum, 660° to about 1450°C. The latter is dictated by the vapor pressure of aluminum which reaches about 1 Torr at that temperature and the limitations of the materials of construction as described in the next section. The pressure range of interest covers from below 1 atm to above the critical pressure of phosphorus, 82.2 atm. EXPERIMENTAL The Temperature of Aluminum as a Variable. A series of experiments were run in the conventional two-temperature manner. All refractories and quartz were dried by heating at 800° to 900° for a minimum of 24 hr, and usually much longer, before use. The aluminum

IN VIEW of the frequent occurrence of petroleum in other parts of the world, it seems odd that so large an area as is contained within the borders of Brazil should be without this product. This apparent deficiency may be due, however, to our ignorance of the regions in which-it, may exist. In some places, indications point to the probable existence of petroleum in ages gone by; and while the presence of petroleum pools may be problematic, in several regions conditions not unfavorable to their occurrence exist. Yet, Brazil has enormous oil resources in the rich oil-shales in different parts of the country. Many of these shales are very rich and only suitable processes for the extraction of the oil are lacking. At the present time, only a few small experimental plants are producing oil by distillation from these shales. These plants have been the subject of recent investigations by the Geological and Mineralogical Survey, a. pre-liminary report of which is in the hands of the printer. The only regions where studies have not been made are the upper Amazon, the Acre, the Rio Negro, and the Peruvian frontier, which really seems to be the most promising field for, explorations of any in the country. In the vast plateau region of the interior north of the 20th parallel of latitude, granites, gneiss, mica schists, and, very old metamorphosed sedimentaries predominate. Later, sedimentaries occupy a minor position and, where found in the interior, represent a thin veneering resting on the older rocks. At several places near the coast they have a greater development and contain considerable beds of oil-shale and may, in some cases, offer conditions favorable for the occurrence of oil. Such deposits are found in the Permian rocks of central-and southern Maranhão; in the Tertiary and Cretaceous beds along the coast of Alagôas Sergipe, Bahia, and perhaps farther south in Espirito Santo; and in the Parahyba embayment north of Cape Frio and in the interior Tertiary basin of eastern Sao Paulo.

A model of a porous body is presented in which the pore space consists of a system of voids and interconnecting tubes. Relationships between porosity and resistivity formation factor are determined partly by calculation, partly by experiment. Con triction effects characteristic of the model are shown to be sufficient to account for high formation factors. It is shown that constriction may be combined with moderate amounts of tortuosity to give model pore systems exhibiting to a first approximation porosity and resistivity properties similiar to those of natural porous bodies. INTRODUCTION The relationship between the electric resistivity of a fluid-filled porous body and the geometry of its pore space is so complex that the calculation of the resistivity of a natural porous rock is a practical impossibility. Both the resistivity of a body and its porosity are measurable quantities, however, and previous successes at relating them have been reached by an empirical approach. Efforts at obtaining theoretically derived formulae relating them have generally been unsatisfactory. One of the reasons for this may lie in the pore geometry that has been assumed. THE TORTUOSITY CONCEPT A Parameter called the formation factor is useful in dis-cussing the resistivity of a fluid-filled porous body. This parameter is the ratio of the resistivity of a fluid saturated porous body to the resistivity of the saturating fluid. Formation factors are often available from measurements on cores or from electric logs, and many attempts have been made to correlate formation factors and porosities of geological formations. Whenever a successful correlation is found, the engineer working with electrical logs has a useful tool for the determination of porsities of pay section?. One of the more successful formulae applicable to these correlations is the familiar equation empirically obtained by Archie.&apos; which F is the formation factor. $ is the porosity, and rn is an exponent called the cementation factor. When the for- mula applies, the cementation factor usually is found to be between 1.3 and 2.2. The values for formation factors experimentally obtained are often higher than simple pore geometry would lead one to expect. In an effort to account for such high values certain formulae have been derived based on a so-called "tortuosity concept." In deriving these formulae a synthetic porous body is usually assumed in which the solid material is an electrical non-conductor. and in which the pore system consists of three sets of fluid-filled tubes of uniform diameter connecting opposite faces of the body which, for convenience, is considered to be cubical in shape. The three sets of tubes account for the whole of the effective porosity of the body, and usually, it is specified that they do not interconnect. By considering that the pore tubes are not straight but tortuous, their resistance to the flow of electric currents can be made as high as needed to explain high formation factors. Such an explanation has some basis in fact, but it appears that the tortuosity concept is often incorrectly applied when other factors are largely responsible for observed high resistivities. Recently, Wyllie and Spangler have recognized that tortuosity as calculated by conventional formulae has little if any physical significance.&apos; RESISTIVITY AND THE CONSTRICTION CONCEPT Any explanation of high formation factors which depends solely on tortuosity of uniform pore paths necessarily ignores the effect that variations in the cross-sectional area of the conducting paths have on the resistivity of a body. Although, as previously pointed out, the calculation of such paths for an actual body is impossible, it will he shown that a synthetic pore network can be devised which will yield to analysis, and lead to results in agreement with the experimental data represented by Equation (1). The porous body to be considered is assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic or, for present purposes, identical in its characteristics in the three directions parallel to its coordinate axes. It will he assumed to be built of identical unit cubes, each of which contains a single pore network connecting all faces of the unit cube. A unit of such a pore network is shown

The town of Pacific, in Jefferson County, Mo., is 27 miles west of St. Louis. Since the area lies entirely on the flood plain of a cut-off meander of the Meramac River, it was considered a likely environment for accumulation of commercial quantities of sand and gravel. Excellent transportation facilities are afforded by two major railways to St. Louis, and ample water supply for washing and separation is assured by the proximity of the river. As a large washing and separation plant was planned, the property was evaluated in detail to justify the high initial expenditure. An intensive testing program using both geophysical and drilling methods was designed and carried out. The prospect was surveyed topographically and a 200-ft grid staked on which electrical resistivity depth profiles were observed at 130 points. The Wenner 4-electrode configuration and earth resistivity apparatus* were used. In all but a few cases, the electrode spacing, A, was increased in increments of 1% ft to a spread of 30 ft and in increments of 3 ft thereafter.

DoctoR Albert Sauveur, distinguished scientist and Honorary Member of this Institute, predicted in the first Howe Memorial Lecture that the privilege of delivering&apos; this annual address would be considered a highly significant honor. The intervening years have well borne out Sauveur&apos;s prophecy. I wish to assure the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers that I also deeply appreciate this honor, recognizing at the same time the present and even more the future responsibilities with which it is accompanicd. Several of the previous lecturers had the good fortune to attend the classes of Professor Howc and to work in his laboratories. I was similarly favored, although in my instance and to my great regret the period was all too short. However, Howe&apos;s book, published in 1903, "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," afforded me abundant opportunity to continue these studies. How well I remember the inspiration I derived from this famous book by Howe, the metallurgical master, pioneer, and educator! Remembering that Professor Howe contributed numerous papers to The Metallographist, a magazine supported from a technical point of view by the world&apos;s pioneers in metallography, I was curious a few days ago to learn the nature of Howe&apos;s early contributions to this magazine. The first paper by Howe in the first year of The Metallographist (1898) dealt with the allotropic theory; the second also treated of allotropy, and I quote the first sentence of that paper: The allotropic theory of the hardening of steel may, like so many other important theories, have to be accepted or rejected not on direct proof or disproof, but on the accumulation of circumstantial evidence for or against it. Howe&apos;s ability to stimulate others by his deep understanding and clarity of expression was truly remarkable; but just as striking was his intuitive judgment concerning the implications of metallurgical data in the arts and scienees. It therefore seems fitting that this lecture comprise a broad treatment of the subject chosen, rather than a closely documented thesis on any one phase of the problem; that in it attention be focused

In China all minerals are, theoretically at least, the property of the Emperor, and the Imperial permission must be got from him for the privilege of working them. A direct tax is levied on this privilege, and by simple command, the Emperor can close a mine at any time. Occult geomantic influences are a large factor in determining the opening or the arbitrary closing of a mine. The location with reference to points of the compass, graves and natural objects, may be really or professedly considered as indicating that those influences are favorable or unfavorable. The consequence, is, of course, that for the authorization and encouragement of any considerable enterprise, friends&apos; at court, practical politics, and more or less bribery, are required. As a result, most Chinese mining is illicit, and is carried on in a small way only. Often along a single vein, or over a small section of mining country, a few individuals obtain rights over all the openings, most probably by loaning money to the head-men of the operators and holding the mines as security for the debt. In such cases, perhaps, for better security, all the ore is reduced in the works established by the creditors, who also handle all silver produced..As the head-men are, for the most part, improvident, and the laws and customs for the collection of&apos; debts are stringent and peculiar, the " officemen" or creditors acquire in time what is practically an ownership of

INTRODUCTION THE Furbero oil field lies in the Gulf coastal plain of Mexico between the important ports of Tampico and Vera Cruz and about one-third of the distance between the two points from the latter (Lat. 20° 22&apos; N., 97° 30&apos; W. Gren.). It is in the State of Vera Cruz, about 14 miles west by south of the village of Papantla in the canton of the same name, and is the most southern of the developed oil fields of the Tampico-Tuxpam region being a distance of 50 miles south by east from the Potrero del Llano field and 42 miles in the sane direction from the Alamo field. The field has been developed by the Oil Fields of Mexico Co. and is in the midst of a large block of lands owned or leased by then. Communication is through the port of Tuxpam with which it is connected by a narrow-gauge railway and 6-in. pipe line some 52 miles in length. This field is of more than ordinary interest since it represents a type of oil deposit hitherto unknown. So far as I am aware, no other commercially valuable deposit of oil is known to occur under conditions of accumulation similar to those found here. The igneous nature of the so-called `sand&apos; encountered in drilling was not recognized until a number of wells had been drilled; and it was not until recently. that the geological relations of the sill or laccolith, which gives rise to the accumulation of oil, were known and the so-called `anticline&apos; was known to be, in part at least, the result of igneous intrusion. Geological surveys in this general region were made in 1900-1901 by W. H. Dalton and in 1907-1909 by P. C. A. Stewart, F. W. Moon, Leonard V. Dalton, and Dr. Max Muhlberg. More recent surveys have been made, however; under the direction of the author, by E. L. Ickes, B. C. Belt, B. Hartley, and Harve Loon-us. Notes of the earlier examinations were not available with the exception of the report by Dr. Muhlberg who apparently first recognized the true nature of the Furbero intrusion. With the advent of higher pressures in the operation of natural-gas transmission lines, the removal of water vapor from the gas has become increasingly important in order to prevent condensation or formation of gas hydrate from slowing down or stopping the flow of gas. Intelligent design of these dehydration or gas-drying plants has been hampered through the Iack of experimental data on the water vapor content of natural gas at elevated pressures. In view of this need, this present investigation was sponsored by the Southern Natural Gas Co. in the Chemical Engineering laboratories at the University of Oklahoma Research Institute. Experimental results were obtained on the water-vapor content of natural gas up to 2000 lb. per sq. in. at atmospheric temperatures. The water content at 2000 lb. is approximately two thirds as much as it is at 1000 Ib. Deviations from the ideal gas laws vary directly with pressure and indirectly with temperature. Introduction The removal of water vapor from natural gas is an important operation in connection with the production and transportation of this commodity because: I. Liquid water accelerates internal corrosion of a pipe line. 2. Accumulation of water at low points in a pipe line reduces markedly its capacity. 3. Gas hydrates, icy snowlike growths, form readily under high pressure in the presence of the lower hydrocarbons and water, often plugging up the pipe line. In order to design dehydration plants for stripping the gas of its water content, it is essential that the engineer. have a knowledge of the saturated or equilibrium water-vapor content of the gas to be processed. With the gradual increase of operating pressures around gas-producing wells and pipe lines, it was observed that the quantity of water recovered from dehydration plants or condensed in colder lines was considerably greater than had been expected from calculated contents, based on vapor-pressure data taken from steam tables. This observation prompted a number of investigators, for instance, Laulhere,3 Dea-ton,l and Hammerschmidt2 to carry out experimental work at pressures up to 600 lb. per sq. in. in order to determine quantitatively the water content of various gases. Sage, Lacey, et al.4,5 have recognized more recently the need for such data at higher pressures, but their work was done at temperatures of 100ºF, and higher. Since hydrate formation usually, if not entirely, occurs at temperatures below 100ºF., the present investigation was confined to the . lower temperature range at pressures from 600 to 2000 lb. per sq. in. gauge.
