THIS paper is an abstract and a discussion of results obtained by the United States Test Board in experiments upon 14 brands of wrought iron, most of which are well known and of high repute.* The iron was all intended for chain-cables; it was tested in the form of bars, usually of nine sizes, from 1 inch to 2 inches round, and also in the forms of single links and short chains. Not less-than 2000 tensile tests were made, each showing elastic limit, elongation, and reduction of area. This work was done with conspicuous intelligence and fidelity, at the Washington Navy Yard, by Commander L. A. Beardslee. Some important practical results and principles which he has developed, and others which he has confirmed, will be referred to. The chemical part of this work consists of 42 complete analyses (including slag), by Mr. Blair, chemist to the Board. EFFECTS OF COMPOSITION ON STRENGTH. Variations in the physical qualities of iron may he due to different composition, or to different treatment in manufacture, or to both these complex causes. In order to determine the specific causes of variation, one class of altering conditions should be made to vary largely, while the other classes should be kept uniform. Then another class should be varied, and so on, until the value of each is ascertained. As all the irons under consideration were intended to have that purity and refinement which was deemed indispensable in chain-cables, their chemical analyses are perhaps more important in proving that physical variations result chiefly from treatment, than in pointing out the specific effects of certain ingredients. While the subject of treatment-especially the increase of strength by greater reduction in rolling-may be the more important one, it can be best appreciated after we have familiarized ourselves with the gen¬eral chemical and physical characters of the irons. The typical facts are given in the following tables. * As the present object of the Board is not to compare the products of different makers, but to discover the physical effects of various composition and treatment, the irons are designated by letters rather than by their trade names.

GOLD occurs in many mineral deposits in the rocks of the Canadian Shield. It is present in the ores of many base metals and a considerable quantity is recovered as a by-product from the production of copper at Noranda, of nickel and copper at Sudbury and of copper and zinc at. Flinflon. But the greater part of the gold production of Canada is from deposits in which gold is the only metal of value. No gold is obtained from placer deposits within the borders of the Canadian Shield. A brief review of the geological relations of some of the gold deposits of the Canadian Shield will be presented in an attempt to explain certain associations. Only those which are being worked for their gold content will be considered and descriptions will be conned to representative types of deposits, chiefly those of major importance; a few others, differ-ing in certain features from those of the older and larger mines, will be included in order to illustrate the general conditions in which gold occurs in these ancient rocks. Brief summaries will be given of the geological relations of the Beattie and Siscoe mines of northern Quebec, of the mines of the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake areas of northeastern Ontario and of the Howey, Central Patricia and Little Long Lac mines of northwest-ern Ontario. Genetic relations to igneous rocks of granitic composition, outcropping in the vicinity, have been assumed for many of these deposits. Undoubt-edly the ore minerals have been derived from igneous sources and, for some occurrences, there is evidence suggestive of genetic relationship between the ore bodies and neighbouring intrusive rocks. During the past few years, however,, many investigators have expressed doubt of the genetic relationship of certain ore bodies to igneous masses near which they occur. As will be seen from references in the following descriptions the importance of the structural conditions in localizing deposition has been realized. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY With respect to the geomechanics aspects, the primary technical objectives in mining by an undercut-cave method are to achieve a controlled, sustained caving of the mineral body and to remove the fragmented ore with a minimum of dilution from surrounding unmineralized rock, while maintaining stability or control of the rock structure around the access openings. The structurally ideal ore body probably does not exist. If the rock mass is so weak as to cave on a short span, it may tend to be too sticky for easy drawing and handling, or create special problems in regard to support of the access openings. If the ore is strong, caving may be difficult and the caved fragments may be of such a large size as to require special equipment for transferring the ore from the caved zone. Given enough time and money to generate data and conduct trials, engineering and ingenuity can devise an appropriate combination of mine layout, sequence of extraction, and mechanical equipment to achieve a technically successful caving extraction operation to meet the foregoing requirements in many types of deposits. The large capital investment involved, however, reduces the freedom to make major changes once the mine development is well under- way, and the penalties for failure to accurately anticipate operating conditions militate against selecting any but the most obvious candidates for mining by an undercut-cave method. The demonstrated capability to extract large, deep, economically marginal deposits by this low-cost, high-volume method of mining provides an incentive to develop a rationale for predicting the cavability and stability characteristics of a deposit prior to mining, so that the undercut-cave method may be extended to a much wider range of mineral deposit characteristics. The ultimate goal is to establish as explicitly as possible the quantitative interrelationships between the measured rock-mass characteristics, the caving span, the size distribution of caved ore fragments, and the sizes and locations of stable access openings. Lacking an understanding of these relation- ships, a designer may readily change some factor in the wrong direction (e.g., excessively reduce the distance between the extraction level and the undercut to increase the convenience of operations for the undercutting crew, increasing the frequency of repairs to the extraction-level support system) or create unnecessary problems elsewhere in the system by introducing a design change that can achieve only minimal improvement in the factor of direct interest (e.g., unnecessarily complicate the ore-transfer system by changing the orientations of the openings, with- out succeeding in the objective of improving the ground support conditions). Although successful predesign is the prime objective, subsequent modifications in mine lay- out and sequence of extraction operations are inevitable. In developing the modified solution, systematic experimentation based on an understanding of the underlying structural relationships, coupled with monitoring measurements of selected diagnostic structural-behavior parameters, can achieve an acceptable solution in a minimum number of steps, which is far superior to the typical operational trial-and-error approach, in view of the cost of implementing each successive change. Since a drill-core sample of ore rock from a successful undercut-cave operation may exhibit a uniaxial crushing strength in excess of 100 MPa, the caving of such a rock mass is now commonly believed to be ascribable to the presence of discontinuities such as joints or fractures throughout the ore body. An essential part of the present investigation was therefore to characterize the natural discontinuities at each of the test sites by measuring their attitudes and spacings. The term "fracture" is used herein in a general sense to include any planar discontinuity without implication as to its suggested mode of origin. Most, but not all, of the fractures are properly termed joints. As a point of departure we may consider the possibility that the rock mass is transected by three families of joints, each family possessing a distinct orientation, such that parallelepipeds of intact rock are delineated by the jointing. Even if cementation is absent between adjoining parallelepipeds, the undercutting of the rock mass will not necessarily initiate sustained caving--owing to the all-around confinement, an arch may tend to stabilize over the undercut unless prevented from doing so by the failures of key blocks of intact rock. TRANSPORTING concrete from mixer to forms has always been a problem. Twenty-five years ago this task was generally accomplished by means of wheelbarrow or concrete buggy. On large dam jobs, as the number of these projects increased, the gantry crane or highline came into use. Today several methods of handling concrete are employed on smaller surface construction jobs, for example, transit-mix trucks or dumpcrete trucks, which have crawler cranes with buckets for placing concrete into forms. In 1944, during early stages of developing Mather mine A shaft, several large underground concrete jobs were necessary. At this time the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co, purchased the first pump-crete machine, introduced by the Chain Belt Co. of Milwaukee. The machine was used to pour approximately 200 cu yd of concrete for a dam, or bulkhead, located 400 ft from the shaft. Concrete was mixed on surface, lowered down the shaft 1000 ft in a 2-cu yd bucket hung under one skip, spouted into the bowl of the pumpcrete machine from the bucket, and pumped directly into the forms. Since the day of the first pipeline concrete in 1944 to the present time, other equipment and other methods have been developed to permit transportation of concrete by pipeline through vertical and horizontal distances totaling 1 mile from mixer to forms. Much of the efficiency in present handling of underground concrete can be credited to the Bethlehem Cornwall mines, where concrete was transported through 6-in. pipe for great distances down an inclined shaft and along levels into forms.' During initial development of Mather mine B shaft, with concrete work under way on two or more levels at one time, the pneumatic concrete placer, Fig. 1, was selected as best adapted for underground concrete transportation. The 3/4-cu yd pneumatic placer is a small machine readily moved from one location in the mine to another. It can be equipped with two sets of mine car wheels, which will permit moving on regular mine tracks. It is therefore possible to send concrete through the pipe at great velocity; the pipeline is clean after each shot except for the film of cement adhering to the inside. With the proper slump in the concrete, it is possible to shoot concrete 2000 ft with this machine, using the mine supply of compressed air at 95 psi. This equipment was first used at Mather mine B shaft to concrete slusher drifts, Figs. 2 and 3, and finger raises located about 2000 ft from the shaft. In several instances there were bends into crosscuts and up vertical distances into the forms. For the first pours two placers were used. The first was located near the shaft where the concrete could be spouted into it from a 2-cu yd concrete bucket on the cage. The second was set on the side of the drift at a point approximately 1500 ft from the shaft. The concrete was shot directly into the second placer from the first unit and from the second machine directly into the forms. After completion of several pours with the two machines, a trial pour with only one placer located at the shaft proved that the second placer could be eliminated. Since then all pours have been successfully completed with only one placer underground. As production of iron ore from the mine increased and the development program expanded, use of the cage for handling mine supplies and concrete became a major problem. This brought about the first attempt at shooting concrete vertically down the shaft for 2600 ft. A 6-in. pipeline with victaulic couplings installed during shaft sinking was used for the trial. One placer was set on surface 250 ft from the collar of the shaft so concrete could be spouted directly into it from the mixer. This machine shot the concrete 250 ft horizontally on surface to the shaft, 2600 ft vertically down the shaft, and 100 ft horizontally into the second placer located near the rib of the shaft station or plat. The second machine shot the batch into the forms, about 2000 ft. Total distance horizontally and vertically was 4800 ft. The entire time cycle for a ¾-cu yd batch of concrete from the mixer on surface to the forms underground totaled about 5 min. During the past two years the two-placer method from the mixer on surface to the forms underground has proved a very efficient means of transporting underground concrete. Advantages of using pipeline concrete are as follows: 1—Interference with normal mining operation is eliminated. When the cage, skips, mine cars, or mine openings are used for transporting concrete and materials used for making concrete, mine operation suffers in one way or another.

The practice of introducing acid into oil wells to increase production of oil and gas has been in use since 1894, when it was first used in the Pennsylvania oil fields30.‡ It is only since 1928 that it has been used to any extent in the Mid-Continent18. The process has proved successful in increasing production, at least temporarily, in depleted oil fields where the producing formation is highly calcareous and where water drive is not too pronounced. In the Zwolle field in Louisiana, where the producing horizon is a chalk, increases of 100 per cent have been recorded25. In north-central Texas, where the oil is produced from the Marble Falls limestone, equally pronounced increases have resulted3. The production also in some fields yielding oil from quartz sand cemented with calcitc has been benefited. The evidence of actual increase in total recovery of oil, however, has been questioned by some engineers18. It has been pointed out that the results of the treatment of a well in a now district, where the process has never been tried out, can never be predicted with certainty, since other factors besides percentage of calcareous content of the oil sand play a large part in determining the success of the method. Numerous articles have been published on acid treatment and on the effects of acid on limestone1-35, yet very little has been written concerning experimental work on the actual effect of acid on capillary pores and larger oil-coated voids of oil sands. This is due partly to difficulties in duplicating field conditions in a laboratory and partly to the fact that the process has been carried out largely by contracting companies that have been unwilling to publish details of their results for fear of loss of business to competitors. The authors, using equipment developed to measure the radial permeability of oil-sand cores2', have developed a method of investigating the results of acid treatment which has enabled them to test numerous cores and to study in some detail the action of acid on the different types of rocks, particularly fine-grained rocks.

IN a study of the blast-furnace process, the Bureau of Mines has made many experiments for the purpose of determining the exact nature of the combustion of coke in the neighborhood of the tuyeres. Two papers1 presented at a meeting of this Institute discussed somewhat the practical aspects of coke combustibility in its relation to the operation of the blast furnace. In a later paper,2 Sherman and Kinney discussed the possible effect of variations in the combustibility of cokes on the furnace operation, and find that the "reoxidation theory" of Koppers and the "heat concentration theory" of Brassert3 are insufficient to explain the variation in the conduct of different cokes that has been observed by furnace operators. In their report to the D-5 Committee of the American Society for Testing Materials, with which the Bureau of Mines has been cooperating, Perrott and Fieldner4 seem to agree with Sherman and Kinney that, for practical purposes, the nature of the combustion of coke at the tuyeres of any furnace is constant and is affected neither by the physical properties of the coke nor by the nature of the furnace operation. They omit as unimportant any tests on the combustibility of coke from their proposed methods for standard tests on coke. This paper is presented in the belief that metallurgists and chemists will be interested in the practice of grinding in tube-mills in connection with stamps, especially since the records of working here given extend over a lengthy period of time (since May, 1905). The ore from the Waihi mine—more especially that produced in the upper levels—contains a large proportion of hard, chalce-donic quartz, and the gold exists in an exceedingly fine state, conditions which necessitate very fine crushing in order to obtain a high extraction of the precious metal. Before the introduction of tube-mills at the 90-stamp Waihi mill, it was found necessary to stamp through 40-mesh (1,600 holes per sq. in.) woven wire-screens, having a fairly high discharge. The pulp then graded : Per Cent. Per Cent. On 50-mes11, .- 0.1 On l20-mesh ..8.77 On 60-mesh, . 8-74 On 150-mesh,.... 7.48 On 80-mesh,... 16.06 Passed 150-mesh,... 55.19 On 100-mesh,.... 3.66 The stamp-dnty was 2.89 short tons per stamp per day, or a total of 260 tons daily. Although the extraction on this pulp was: gold, from 88 to 90 per cent., and silver, from 74 to 78 per cent., it was recognized that finer grinding of the sands would prove beneficial, provided a machine could be found to do this work economically. Various grinding-mills and pans were tried, but without satisfactory results, the particles of sand being so hard that the capacity of any of the machines was too small to be economical. For general purposes, insulating materials may be any of those mineral substances that provide a barrier between a desired human environmental feature and an unwanted condition. In this sense, radiation shields, electrical insulations, cryogenic insulation, and acoustical barriers would qualify. For this chapter only the thermal and acoustic insulations used for the median range of normal comfort control will be covered. Because of their magnitude and complexity the other fields are left to other chapters. In another sense, this section deals only with the ultra-lightweight aggregates and insulations, rather than the multitude of light-weight structural materials. Definitions and Uses The insulating materials covered in this chapter are the three groups of mineral products that provide thermal or acoustic barriers through the median temperatures encountered in home and industry. The three mineral categories are perlite, vermiculite, and the silicate wools whether they be categorized as glass, mineral, or rock. Perlites are those amorphous aluminum silicates with minor impurities that take the form of a felsitic, glassy lava possessing a pearl-like luster and concentric cracking. In a more commercial sense the term is used to describe either the natural or processed acidic, volcanic glass, containing from 2 to 5% combined water, that may be converted to a frothy mass by heating rapidly to the softening point. Vermiculites are micaceous, hydrated magnesium iron aluminum sheet silicates of varying composition. Commercial vermiculites are any of these sheet silicates that are capable of sufficient expansion on rapid heating to make an acceptable, highly porous product. Mineral wools, rock wools, silicate cottons, glass fiber are generic names for manufactured fibers in which the fiber forming substance may be slag, certain rocks, or glass. The fibers may be made by a blowing or spinning process. The resultant fibers may be felted or matted or gathered in the manner best suited to the use. The three groups may be used competitively to insulate ceilings and walls. The fibers have strong advantages in this area as they may be manufactured in batts that are stable in residential wall construction. The perlites and vermiculites are more suited to insulate cores and cavities of masonry walls and as plaster and concrete aggregates for thermal insulations. Vermiculite is widely used for insulating attic floors. Because of manufacturing techniques and controls, the glass fibers have made great strides as composites in the plastics industry but only a few of these uses classify in the insulation category.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) SYSTEMATIC exploitation in the Pittsburg coal-seam on a large scale is simple where the boundaries of the property do not interfere by forcing drainage-, ventilation-, and transport-lines of entries to be run to particular confined fronts. A prime condition governing development is the natural direction of the seam's perpendicular cleavage-planes, giving long lines of smooth faces near together and parallel, bearing about 65° to the left of the meridian and therefore crossing the basins. The gradients of dip into the basins change from 10 per cent at the east rim to practical flatness northwestward across the great coal-fields, a hundred miles wide; the clip being halved in rate at each successive crossing-over of an anticlinal crest. Elevations above sea-level on this transverse section, in scope of present development, differ by 1,000 ft. between low trough and high outcrop. Local irregularities of dip are found, but the main feature to be recognized is the pitch of the basins-the general rise northeastward at 20 ft. per mile, from 100 ft, below sea-level at the low point near the. SW. corner of Pennsylvania to 1,500 ft. and more above tide, and the appearance then, at the surface, of the lower coal-seams carried in the next deeper-lying thousand feet of rock-measures; below which series come the oil- and gas-sands of Oliphant's charted column of strata, reaching down altogether 3,000 ft. below the Pittsburg coal-seam. Because of -the general regularity of occurrence of the coal-seam, the mine-map depicting the courses of economic operation to be undertaken and the steps in controlled exhaustion, need be but a projection of two dimensions on the horizontal plane of space, and this for the most part composed of natural, almost unbroken lines, on the face and on the end of the coal, co-ordinating rectangularly.

Diffusion coefficients and mobilities were determined as functions of concentration in the a phase of the Cu-Zn system. Use was mode of incremental diffusion couples to determine the Kirkendall effect at various concentrations. Darken's analysis was used to calculate the individual diffusion coefficients and mobilities from these data. The general diffusion coefficient is a single-valued function of the concentration in this system to within the limits of accuracy of the experimental methods used. The form of the various functions (diffusion coefficients and mobilities) of concentration is the same in every case: it is essentially the same as the usual D vs c curve. AS Darken' has pointed out, the knowledge that the movements of different atoms diffusing in the same lattice need not proceed at the same rate is old. Ionic lattices are the classical examples; application of the generalization to lattices with metallic bonding was much more slowly accepted. It remained for Kirkendall'' to show clearly that metallic diffusion need not be symmetrical with respect to both species. Several investigators" have confirmed the initial observation of a "Kirkendall effect:" marker movement accompanying diffusion. They have extended it to other systems and conditions. The theoretical interpretations have been many; ne of the first and simplest of these is that of Darken"' which is essentially mechanism independent. Darken has shown that the Kirkendall experiment permlts a calculation of the individual diffusion coefficients and, coupled with activity data, offers a means of measuring the mobilities of the separateatoms in a binary diffusion process. There is no published information on the effects of concentration and temperature on the individual diffusion coefficients or on the mobility values in binary solid solution; this paper provides such information for zinc and copper in a brass. For purposes of clarity, the overall D value obtained, for example, from the Boltzmann-Matano solution to Fick's law, will be designated as the "general diffusion coefficient;" and the diffusion co- efficients for the separate diffusing species will be designated as the "individual diffusion coefficients." Experimental Procedure The authors have accepted Darken's analysis and have measured mobilities on this basis. The findings of da Silva and Mehl are accepted: that the Matano interface, defined as the origin of coordinates for the Boltzmann-Matano solution to Fick's law, coincides with the original weld interface; that the "shift" of a marker is the distance between the Matano interface and the marker; that the observed porosity is too small sensibly to affect this result; and that the shift is a linear function of the Matano area, the area defined as the absolute magnitude of the area on either side of the Matano interface. Alloys: The a-phase of the Cu-Zn system was chosen for investigation. The measurements were made on incremental couples for two separate reasons: l—it has been questioned whether D, the general diffusion coefficient, is a single-valued function of concentration (a comparison of the D-values for couples with small concentration range, e.g., 10 vs 20 pct Zn, against those from a wide concentration range, e.g., 0 vs 30 pct Zn, will answer that question); and 2—on the Darken analysis, the mobility can be determined only at the concentration at which the marker is observed to lie (this is but one concentration in a single couple) but choosing a series of incremental couples in the range between 0 and 30 pct Zn provides mobility values at several concentrations, thus giving mobility as a function of concentration. Four alloys were chosen; nominally, pure copper, copper with 10 pct Zn, copper with 20 pct Zn, and copper with 30 pct Zn. This allowed six different types of diffusion couples to be prepared, promising mobility determinations at six different concentrations, but having a minimum range of 10 pct Zn. THERE is a wide difference of opinion among rifle experts in the matter of barrel steel, and the relative importance to the life of the barrel of the steel's composition, heat-treatment, structure, and physical properties. In order to promote discussion, which it is hoped may lead to the discovery of the source of 'some of the traditional beliefs on the subject, the results of some tests are presented here, with data on heat-treating, physical tests, and erosion. The detailed metallographic study of this steel is given in another paper.1 The conclusions from these tests should be capable of wider application than their direct bearing on the barrel-steel problem. The Government specifications for barrel steel for model 1903 rifle (Springfield) call for carbon 0.50 to 0.60 per cent., manganese 1.00 to 1.29 per cent., silicon under 0.25 per cent., sulfur under 0.06 per cent., phosphorus under 0.08. per cent. The minimum physical requirements are: Tensile strength,- 110,000 lb. per sq. in. (7733 kg. per sq. cm.); yield point, 75,000 lb. per sq. in (5472 kg. per sq. cm.); elongation, 20 per cent.; reduction of area, 45 per cent. Material fulfilling these requirement's gives practically no failures when proof-fired, with charge of 70,000 lb. per sq. in. pressure, which is 40 per cent. in excess of the service charge. The turning and drilling operations show up any seams or laps such as accidentally occur even in- the best heats of open-hearth steel, so that' faulty stock is practically all eliminated before proof-firing. These physical requirements are met either by rolling billets at, a proper temperature clown to the form of tapered barrel blanks or by heat-treating bars that have been upset to enlarge the breech section. The transformation temperature of this steel, on heating, is around 1350° F. (732° C.), varying somewhat with the composition and the rate of heating. Open pits and quarries are the major sources of all hard rock tonnages mined today. Normally, ore is fractured from the pit bench face by blasting and then truck-hauled to a primary crusher on the pit rim for conveying to the concentrator; overburden (or waste) is generally truck- hauled from the pit to dump areas. This system of truck haulage of blasted ore and waste accounts for some 25 to 50% of total mining costs in a typical open pit operation and commonly is the largest single cost factor. In an effort to reduce these costs mining companies are continually replacing their older and smaller trucks with larger ones and at the same time are studying conversions to conveyor haulage, since this method of transport seems to offer possibilities of lower costs per ton of material handled. In these studies it seems logical to consider installing these conveyors as close as possible to the mining face for maximum use of conveyors and minimum use of trucks, since a conveyor is much less labor intensive than a trucking system. However, direct loading onto a conveyor near the retreating bench face is impractical because of excessive lump size. Consequently, it is conventional practice to load the blasted rock into trucks at the face for haulage to the crusher. After crushing, the rock is fed onto a conveyor. The closer the crusher is to the mine, or if it is in the mine, the shorter the truck haul and the greater the potential for cost saving. At first appearance, in-pit conveying might seem to be an obvious solution, yet many mining companies have considered such a move while few have implemented it. To determine why, it is necessary to consider the factors influencing such a decision. A conveyor system tends to be capital intensive but can have a lower operating cost per ton than trucks. Trucks, on the other hand, tend to cost less to buy but more to operate; thus, economics tend to favor the conveyor if it can be operated close to capacity and if a sufficiently large tonnage can be passed over the system to mitigate the effect of its high capital cost. In a typical hard-rock, open-pit mine it is necessary for a variety of reasons to mine several faces of both ore and waste at the same time; and any mining system must have sufficient flexibility to permit loading from one face or another at short notice. This makes it impractical to place small mobile crushers and their consequent network of conveyors at each working face. To date no alternative has been found to using trucks for bringing all rock of the same class to some convenient marshalling point from which it may be crushed and conveyed from the pit. Another advantage of trucking when compared to conveying is flexibility. Many mines wish to deliver their shot-rock to different locations, depending on the mineral content. THE year 1923 has been a dull period in oil development in Kentucky and Tennessee, with the exception of the Kettle Creek area along the Tennessee-Kentucky line, in Clinton and Cumberland Counties, Kentucky, and Clay County, Tennessee. The price of oil during the year has been so low that wildcatters have shown little interest in drilling. At the beginning of the year, light oil sold for $2.31 per barrel and medium oil for $2.06 per barrel. Prices increased to the highest point for the year in February, when light oil brought $2.86 per barrel and medium oil, $2.61. In April, prices had declined 35 c. while in May an additional decline of 25 c. went into effect. During June, prices declined 20 c. per barrel; during July, 45 c. per barrel; remained stationary during August and September, and dropped during November and December to the low price of $1.36 per barrel for light and $1.21 for medium oil. At present, an increase of 29 c. has brought the price of light oil up to $1.55, and indications are that the price will continue to increase during the coming months. It can readily be seen that during 1923 the price of oil was such as to prevent any drilling except that necessary to hold leases and to maintain production enough to take care of overhead expenses.

THERE is a disagreement among the various authors about the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2. Rostokerl and others2 stated that ZrCr2 had a C-14 (MgZn2) type of structure below 1000°C and a C-15 (MgCu2) type of structure at temperatures above 1000°C. Alisova3 and others4 reached the opposite conclusion and stated that the transformation temperature is close to the melting point of ZrCr2. A literature survey shows that various investigators3'= who homogenized the specimens at a temperature higher than 1000°C have concluded that ZrCr2 had the C-15 structure at room temperature. Meanwhile, Jordan et al.4 reached similar conclusions without annealing the specimen. Other investigators1,2,6,7 who X-rayed the specimens in the as-cast condition without annealing reached different conclusions. The investigation reported herein was conducted with the aim of exploring the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2 by various heat treatment tests. The alloys for this examination were prepared from iodide-reduced zirconium crystal bars, 99.9 pct purity, and electrolytic chromium, 99.9 pct purity. They were melted in a nonconsumable electrode arc furnace with water-cooled copper crucible in a helium atmosphere. The melting loss of each alloy was less than 1.5 pct by weight. Chemical analysis of a randomly selected specimen indicated that there was a very close agreement between calculated and analyzed compositions. Before being heat-treated each specimen was encapsulated in a vycor or quartz tube inside which an argon atmosphere was maintained at a pressure of lower than 1 atm. In determining the crystal structure of each specimen with a Debye-Scherrer camera, the standard procedure8 for X-ray quality analysis (Hanawalt method) was followed. The different series of heat treatment tests in this investigation are tabulated in Tables I and 11. The tests in Series I, specimens from 1-1 to 1-9, which were similar to Rostoker's experiment1 indicated that the transformation temperature seemed to fall between 870° and 900°C and that the crystal structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperature seemed to be of the C-14 type. However, once the compound is transformed to C-15 type, it is impossible to reverse the transformation back to the C-14 type by first heating the specimen above 900°C and then annealing it slowly below 900°C as shown in Experiments II-1 to II-3. Thus, it appears that the specimen of ZrCr2 will transform from C-14 to C-15 structure when heated above 900°C but will not transform from C-15 to C-14 when annealed slowly passing 900° C even after the extremely slow cooling process such as indicated in the experiment of Specimen II-3. As a valid transformation temperature is a temperature at which the transformation is reversible, therefore the temperature 900°C (or other temperature close to 900°C) is not the transformation temperature for ZrCr2 and the C-14 structure is not the stable structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperatures. The C-14 structure is retained at room temperature because the transformation to C-15 structure is very sluggish and the fast cooling after melting does not allow enough time for the transformation to take place. Additional energy is required to alter the metastable condition of the C-14 structure. The sluggishness of this transformation was again demonstrated through another series of experiments. Four specimens with C-14 structure were taken. Then they were annealed at 900°C but each specimen was soaked for a different period of time, Table 11. X-ray diffraction patterns of this group indicated that the C-14 structure gradually disappeared as the soaking period was lengthened. The figures listed under the column "C-14 Structure, pct" were estimated from the intensity of the d = 2.330 line of the diffraction pattern corresponding to the structure. Notice that the intensity of this line became weaker for longer soaking periods. To determine the transformation temperature of ZrCr2, specimens with C-14 structure (as-cast condition) were annealed at 1300°, 1400°, 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C, respectively. A final specimen was first heat-treated to 1500°C in order to transform it to C-15 structure, then heat-treated at 1600°C again. From the X-ray analyses of this series of tests, Specimen Nos. III-1 to III-6, it is evident that a transition from C-15 structure at lower temperatures to the C-14 structure occurs at some temperature between 1550° and 1600°C.

INTRODUCTORY A COMPLETE list of the elements as given for 1915 includes 18 that melt above 1,700° C. There does not exist one complete thermal equilibrium diagram for any pair of these 18 elements. Several of these elements have been combined, in relatively small proportions, with metals of lower melting point: e.g., tungsten, molybdenum, and vanadium, in steels, or with nickel and cobalt; but of this refractory group, platinum is the only one that has been extensively studied in this connection. When one considers that, with few exceptions, the industries have made use of alloys to the exclusion of pure .metals, it is reasonable to expect that alloys of this refractory group will invade fields in which the pure metals have found little application. The past neglect of this class of metals has, no doubt, been partly due to the rarity of some of them, for even though alloys of very valuable properties should be developed, their cost, unless in exceptional applications, would be prohibitive. There is also a well-founded reluctance to undertake research involving very high temperatures which, in the case of most of these elements, must be accompanied by an inert atmosphere as well. This combination of high temperatures* and control of atmosphere within the heating chamber of any furnace of present design is a difficult problem. It is the purpose of this paper to give results,1 of an investigation of one binary series of this group, in which methods were employed that avoided the usual difficulties accompanying high-temperature alloy investigation.

THE use of ball, rod and tube mills for grinding ore, cement and other materials has grown so rapidly during the past forty years that the world's annual consumption of ferrous grinding media for these mills is now estimated to be between one half million and one million tons per year. Ferrous grinding balls constitute the major portion of this tonnage. Obviously they represent sufficient value to justify thorough studies' of the factor sgoverning their performance. The selection of grinding balls is governed principally by: I. Quality (wear resistance, impact resistance, soundness, and the like). 2. Sources of supply and delivered cost. 3. Grinding characteristics or efficiency in the ball mill. This paper deals principally with the quality of ferrous grinding balls. In the study of these factors certain data relative to the fundamental nature of ball wear in ball mills have been obtained. These data are also presented and discussed briefly. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUITABLE WEAR TEST A study of the fundamental factors governing the quality of grinding balls has been hampered seriously by the fact that a competent test has, in the past, involved the purchase of several hundred tons of balls of a specific type which were then run in one or more ball mills for a period ranging from several months to several years' duration. Often, during the period of test, it became necessary to change operating conditions or the character of the ore fed, to the test mill with the result that the rate of ball consumption changed and the test figures became of little value. Under such circumstances, progress in the development of better grinding balls, has been necessarily slow. Economic factors and variations in the quality of balls produced by different sources of supply generally make it necessary for each mill operator to determine for himself the most suitable type of balls for his mills. In our own ball mill grinding operations at Climax, Colo., we were faced with this problem. After we had run a few large scale wear tests at considerable expense we decided to investigate the possibilities of a small scale wear test which would be capable of testing numerous types of balls within a relatively short time. The most important requirement of any test is, of course, that it give results which can be used to predict accurately the wear in full scale operations. It was known that Ellis and his associates1,2 had developed a method of testing grinding balls by small scale tests run at the Ontario Research Foundation. Ellis' method of testing was used as a starting point in our investigations. An etching technique.has been used to investigate the dislocation structure of deformed @-brass single crystals. Isolated single ended pileups have been observed, and it is shown that, in certain cases, the configurations of such pileups agree with theoretical predictions. Many discrete pileups within heavily deformed regions have also been detected and the influence of surrounding dislocations on these groups are reported and discussed. Divergences between the experimental and theoretical spacings in the isolated pileups and the origin of the stress maintaining the pileups are discussed. THE spatial configuration of a linear array of identical dislocations has been evaluated theoretically by Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro.' Of particular interest is the equilibrium spacing of a series of dislocations under a uniform shear sti-ess when the leading dislocation is held fixed in the lattice; such an array is termed a single ended pileup. Eshelby, Frank, and Nabarro' found that an explicit analytical solution to the problem of n dislocations in a pileup is not possible, but they were able to derive approximate formulae applicable under various limiting conditions. An alternative method of determining the equilibrium configuration was proposed by Leibfried and Leibfried and Haasen in which the discrete dislocations are replaced by a continuous dislocation density. This technique was used by Head and Louat to solve in first approximation, a number of problems of particular interest, eg., single and double ended pileups. Head has also solved numerically a number of specific configurations involving up to six dislocations. Recently Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf has obtained numerical solutions for single-ended pileups containing between three and seventy dislocations, thus making possible a comparison between appropriate experimental results and accurate theoretical values. The considerable use of the pileup concept in theories of plastic flow has stimulated a number of attempts to observe such arrays experimentally. There is of course considerable intrinsic value in revealing an isolated pileup because a direct check on the elastic theory of dislocations then becomes possible. The only technique generally applicable for studying pileups in bulk metal specimens is selective etching of the point of emergence of individual dislocations. Since the sudden revival of the air or gas-lift and its extensive use in the oil fields, many questions have arisen as to principles and as to their application under the conditions actually encountered in the field. Much has been written regarding both theory and practice, especially on the air-lift as applied to lifting water. Many statements have been made as to the use and benefits of the gas-lift, some of which are reasonable but many of which are unreasonable, many specialty makers claiming to have devices which operate in almost miraculous ways and even to generate energy nature never possessed. These claims are often based upon incomplete or inaccurate data. A review of the literature discloses many valuable articles, but it also discloses the need for setting out more clearly the different practical ends sought, and for working out specific engineering principles upon which to formulate the design and operation of gas-lifts to meet the desired ends within the limitations of field conditions. A check on some of the published information has revealed basic errors in the sources of data upon which conclusions have been predicated and has led the writers to doubt the value of a large part of the compiled data. The writers have concluded, therefore, that it will be opportune to direct discussion to the sources of error in the data now being collected, to recommend for consideration by the engineers some methods of collecting and correlating data, and to point out some of the factors relating to the application of the air-lift principle to oil production as dictated by the different economic ends sought, and the limitations of working conditions that may be met. Until these several considerations are clearly understood by the engineers, and the unreliable data have been sifted out and dependable data substituted, there seems little chance of evolving satisfactory engineering control for the air-lift. In the following pages no distinction will be made between gas-lift and air-lift, as they are generically the same.

The topic for discussion was ferro-alloys, and the supply' of raw materials for their manufacture. After a few introductory remarks by President Philip N. Moore, of the Institute, and President Colin G. Fink of the American Electrochemical Society, Mr. C. S. Newcomb presented his paper on "Chrome Mining and Concentration."
