The effects of microwave treatment on the floatabilities and magnetic susceptibilities of some sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite, were studied. Pure mineral samples were prepared in -425+212-µm, -212+106-µm and -106+38-µm size fractions. Microflotation and magnetic separation tests were carried out on the samples after microwave treatment at 600, 950 and 1,300 Watts for 5, 20, 60, 90, 120 and 240 seconds. The maximum temperature values of the samples were measured during the microwave treatment, and possible altera-tions on the mineral surfaces were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effects of microwave treatment are discussed based on the result of microflotation and magnetic separation tests. The results revealed that pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were heated very quickly and that their surface temperatures reached ~700° to 900°C, while the temperature of sphalerite reached only ~130°C. The floatability of pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were decreased when microwave energy and the duration of treatment were increased, owing to oxidation of the mineral surfaces caused by relatively high temperature. As expected, there was no change in the floatability of sphalerite. The magnetic properties of pyrite and chalcopyrite were improved by the increase in microwave energy and the duration of treatment to such an extent that 90% of the feed separated as magnetic product. But no change was observed in the magnetic properties of galena and sphalerite.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has pursued quartz analysis for the specialized ?lter assemblies of a new worker-wearable personal dust monitor (PDM). The PDM is a real-time instrument utilizing a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM®). Standard ?berglass TEOM ?lters cannot accommodate the desired P-7 infrared analytical method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Novel ?lter materials were tested with the objective of demonstrating this type of analysis. Low temperature ashing and spectrometric examination were employed, revealing that nylon ?ber candidate ?lters left minimal residual ash and produced no signi?cant spectral interference. Avoiding titanium dioxide in all ?lter materials proved to be a key requirement. Fine quartz particulates were collected on prototype ?lters in a Marple chamber, either open-faced or through PDMs during test runs. The ?lters were then subjected to MSHA P-7 analysis and the spectrometrically based analytical results for quartz mass were compared to reference measurements. Also, PDM instrumental mass readings were compared to ?lter gravimetric measurements. Results suggest that the P-7 method is adaptable to variations in ?lter materials and that quartz dust analysis by the P-7 method when utilizing the new ashable PDM ?lters can have accuracy and precision within 10% and 4%, respectively. This is within the declared 13% accuracy and 7–10% precision of the P-7 method itself. Instrument mass readings had modest positive bias but met NIOSH accuracy criteria. Continued work with specialized PDM ?lters is merited, as they are a new type of TEOM sample amenable to ashing analysis of particulates.

The XCVIIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at Spokane, Wash., beginning Monday, Sept. 27, 1909, as already announced in Special Circulars of May 8 and Aug. 14, 1909, and in the Bulletins for June, July, and August. The meeting will be preceded by a tour through Yellow stone Park and visits to Butte and Anaconda, and will be followed by visits to the Coeur d'Alene district, to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at Seattle, to the mining- and smelting-plants near Salt Lake, and to the iron- and lead- and zinc-plants at Pueblo. The special train for the party' will leave Chicago, September 16, and return about October 12. Details of the itinerary are given later in this announcement. The Secretary of the Spokane Local Committee is Lyndon K. Armstrong, 615 Hyde Block, Spokane, Wash., to whom should be addressed all inquiries concerning local matters. The control of the papers and proceedings will remain in charge of the Institute office, as usual. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the many courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the excursion party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. For those who cannot join in the entire trip, it may be possible to provide special Pullman accommodations after leaving Yellowstone Park. This study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for four underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.06 to 4.99 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of December 6, 1974, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1974, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1975 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $20,799,800 for the 1 .06- million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $84,027,500 for the 4.99-MM-tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $32,506,800 to $1 22,983,500 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $12.87 to $11.64 per ton, assuming a 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

One of the most notable achievements of the iron and steel industry in the United States in this century has been the general increase in productivity of individual blast furnaces and the reduction in coke rate. Most of the improvement in furnace operations has occurred within the past decade. During this time the output of the average furnace increased about one-third, while fuel rates decreased from 15 to 20 percent. For example, in 1949, the iron and steel industry produced 811.2 short tons of pig iron per blast-furnace day with a coke rate of 1,870.4 pounds per ton of pig iron, By 1960, the average production of pig iron per blast-furnace day had risen to 1,182.4 tons, while the coke rate had decreased to 1,497 pounds per ton of pig iron. These figures are averages for the entire industry; many furnaces produced over 2,000 tons per day and one furnace, operating on pellets, reached 2,700 tons of pig iron per day, Coke rates of individual furnaces varied, but some furnaces operated on less than 1,200 pounds per ton of pig iron. The significance of this decrease in coke rate is shown clearly when data on pig-iron production and coke consumption in 1959 are compared with 1948. In 1948, 57.3 million short tons of coke was charged into blast furnaces to produce 60.1 million tons of pig iron; in 1959 only 47.6 million tons of coke was needed to produce 60.2 million tons of pig iron. Thus, in 1959, nearly 10 million tons less coke was required to produce about the same amount of pig iron as was produced in 1948.

A model for the leaching of oxide ores is developed and II correlated with laboratory tests for percolation leaching of copper oxide are. Using the model, recovery of metal values and lixiviant concentration of the effluent solution at any time may be evaluated. For the copper oxide ore a simplified version of the model is examined for the leaching mechanism consisting of: 1) a surface flush reaction with the highest rate of lixiviant consumption; 2) penetration of lixiviant to react with copper minerals and gangue constituents; and, 3) slow lixiviant consumption, mostly by residual gangue materials. The simplified model is able to explain reasonably the leaching behavior of copper oxide ore by introducing a concept of effective initial size to correct for packing in a bed of fine particles.

Drainage of water from abandoned underground mines has become important in recent years because of safety concerns when mining near abandoned works or reentering abandoned mines for further development. Seepage from inundated mines causes environmental damage and may threaten homes and communities. Where topography permits, horizontal drilling can provide a quick and cost effective method for solving trapped water problems. The mechanics of the horizontal drilling operation as applied to water drainage are discussed in this paper.

A bench-scale evaluation of coal and coal waste materials as aggregate materials for use in longwall mine supports was undertaken as part of the Bureau of Mines Health and Safety program on ground control. Performance data were obtained on portland cement concretes (PCC) prepared with coal and coal wastes as aggregate materials. The effects of high-early-strength accelerators on strength and creep and of superplasticizers on strength properties of PCC formulated with coal and coal waste were investigated. Concrete formulated with a high-early-strength accelerator and coal and coal waste has 20 and 40 pet greater compressive strength, respectively, than the control samples without admixture. A concrete formulated with coal waste and the high-early-strength accelerator, using four bags of cement per cubic yard and a water-cement ratio of 1.0, had the lowest creep value of all the coal- and coal-waste-formulated PCC's tested.

Success of a blasting pattern in Blasting-off-the-solid (BOS) in Bord (Room) & Pillar method of coal mining is judged by the percentage of pull achieved vis-à-vis the yield of coal produced in a blasted round. Improper blast design and distribution of explosives in shot holes normally causes poor breakage i.e. a major portion of shot holes left unbroken resulting into reduced yield per blast. Over and above the disturbance to the roof is also due to excessive vibration caused by explosive energy not properly utilized in fragmentation.

Costs of complex/underground projects have been consistently underestimated and delivery on time and on budget has been problematic. This has been attributed, to inadequate cost estimates and unidentified and/or insufficiently managed risk. Use of probabilistic cost estimates like the Washington State Department of Transportation?s CEVP® process (developed by the author and others) has produced more realistic cost estimates, explicitly identified and quantified risk (as input to risk management plans) and early awareness of key project issues. This paper updates previous work (NAT 2004), adds implementation detail for probalistic cost estimating as used by WSDOT, FHWA and other agencies and will address key issues in risk management, as related to probalistic cost estimates.

"Methods and costs of rock-dusting bituminous coal mines have been discussed in various publications by the United States Bureau of Mines and others.3 This paper discusses the present methods and cost of dusting at the Swastika mine of the St. Louis, Rocky Mountain and Pacific Co., Raton, N. M.In the Swastika mine the recommendations of the United States Bureau of Mines with regard to rock-dusting are followed at least as well as in any mine in the States of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. This mine is located at Swastika, N. M., approximately 4 miles west of the town of Raton and is in the Raton coal seam. The mine is rated as gassy and produces approximately 1,000 tons of coal per day.A mining system known as the ""room-and-pillar with cut-offs"" is used which results in recovery of nearly 100 per cent of the coal. The mine employs approximately 250 men.Ventilation is maintained by a Sirocco fan so arranged that the air current may be reversed and exhausting approximately 130,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3 inches water gauge. This fan is supplemented by two auxiliary fans for emergency use. Three main entries penetrate the hill in a straight line for approximately 8,000 feet. The haulage is through the center entry, which is also used as the intake in conjunction with a two-compartment concrete-lined shaft located at the end of the entries. The main return for 3,000 feet inby the fan is 12 feet wide and 7 feet high. For this distance the ribs have been reinforced by a wall made of coke-breeze blocks plastered over with cement. Solid concrete blocks are used for the top row of blocks of the wall. Steel 10-inch I-beams spaced 40 inches apart center to center are supported on these solid blocks and thus support the roof. The next 1,000 feet inby has the same area, but the cement blocks extend to the roof, as no crosspieces are needed. The airways are kept clean and well rock-dusted.A rather unique system is used to handle gas feeders along the intake and haulage entries. There these feeders occur in the roof or where gas is apt to collect in high points along the haulage, tin funnels as large as 3 feet in diameter are placed near the roof. From these a 2-inch or other suitable-sized pipe is run into the return through the wall of the nearest break-through. A valve on this pipe line controls the amount of air pulled. These devices keep the high places clear of any gas, even when strong feeders are encountered.Fifteen-ton electric trolley locomotives are used on the main haulage and approximately 30 roller-bearing oars, each having a capacity of approximately 3,000 pounds of coal, compose a trip. All loaded tripe carry steel drags on the last car, and automatic derails are located at advantageous points throughout the mine.All loaded trips are thoroughly sprinkled on the sectional partings and at the main parting. The track is sprinkled every idle day, or if needed, every day; from a large tank mounted on a truck hauled by a motor. Neither nozzle nor spray is used, as these were unsatisfactory. The water leaves the tank. through a 11/2-inch valve and is permitted to flow on the road through a horizontal 11/2-inch T. Water is obtained from filling stations located throughout the mine. It is stated by the officials that the use of this method of sprinkling permits the entire haulage roadbed to be wetted down in two hours."

Tracers of known densities are used world wide in coal processing plants to evaluate plant performance. Tracers are added to the feed stream and are counted after being recovered from the product and discard streams to determine partition curves. The need to recover the tracers can be eliminated by adding radio frequency identification tags to the tracers. Readers mounted on the product and discard streams record the passing RF tracers and produce the partition curve instantly. Tests were performed with three different shaped tracers at different collieries on cyclones ranging from 510mm to 800mm in diameter. Sink and float analyses of coal samples were used to compare conventional partition curves to partition curves obtained by using RF tracers. The average amount of tracers recorded was 78% of tracers in the feed. The results indicate that the stone shaped tracers represent the results from the sink-float analyses the best. The results suggest that RF tracers can be used to evaluate cyclone circuits in the coal industry and will make it possible to evaluate a coal circuit?s efficiency without stopping a plant and waiting for laboratory analyses. An instrumented spherical vessel has been used for many years to study laminar combustion waves. Concurrent measurements of flame speed and pressure-rise rates have led to evaluations of burning velocities, the pressure dependence of the burning velocity, and the expansion ratios of the gases passing through the combustion wave. For the most part, these studies have involved flames initially at atmospheric or subatmospheric pressure. The old spherical vessel used by the Bureau of Mines was not designed for use at elevated pressures. Moreover, being made of wrought iron, it was susceptible enough to corrosion to prohibit its use with many combustible mixtures that figure in industrial research. In mid-1956, under sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research, the Bureau undertook the development of a stainless steel spherical vessel capable of withstanding explosions of gaseous mixtures at initial pressures as high as 20 atm. and initial temperatures as high as 250° C. The design called for a double array (cross) of closely spaced small windows for observation of the flame as it traversed the vessel and a piezoelectric transducer to measure concurrently pressure-rise rates. Because no commercial contractor was willing to bid on the construction of such a vessel, it was built at the Bureau's Bruceton machine shop.7

Leaching of manganese from low-grade Minnesota ores was studied over the temperature range 25° to 225° C at atmospheric and elevated pressures to demonstrate that good recoveries of manganese could be achieved from unroasted ores using reagents available nearby. Various combinations of ore, pyrite, lignite derivatives, and sulfuric acid were tested on a small scale. Pyrite alone required the highest temperature to effect a good extraction, but the combination of pyrite, lignite char, and sulfuric acid solubilized 99 percent of the manganese after 30 minutes of reaction at 75° C.

Molybdenum has been successfully cast into static and rotating molds in conventional equipment used for casting titanium and zirconium. Melting was accomplished by using an arc potential of 36 to 40 volts with a current of 10,000 amperes. Pouring efficiency, after a skull had been formed in the crucible, averaged 70 percent. Techniques are described by which four successful castings were made. Tensile properties on specimens cut from one centrifugally cast tube averaged: Tensile strength, 39,800 p.s.i.; yield strength (0.1 pct. offset), 35,300 p.s.i.; elongation, nil; reduction in area, nil; impact strength, 2 ft.-lb.; hardness DPH (diamond pyramid hardness) 180. Mold reaction was not evident in shapes cast in machined graphite. This was not true, however, for rammed graphitic-base molds.

A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. The geology of the roof of the Pittsburgh coal bed was studied and mapped in nine contiguous counties containing the bulk of the remaining reserves of this coal bed in the northern Appalachian Coal Basin. Drill core records from Belmont and Monroe counties, Ohio, Washington and Greene counties Pennsylvania, and Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel, Monongalia, and Marion counties, West Virginia provided the data for twelve computer generated regional geologic variable maps. Four of these geologic variables (overburden thickness, vertical distance to the rider coal, lithology at the five foot horizon above the roof of the mineable Pittsburgh seam, and the number of lithologic changes within the 30 foot interval above the roof of the mineable Pittsburgh seam) were used to estimate the risk of potential roof falls by a methological scheme developed during this study. A hazard zone risk map was developed showing a generalized regional trend of increasing risk from west to east across the basin. Mapping of individual geologic variables and mapping of hazard risk can be done at any scale. The accuracy of the mapping is primarily dependent on the density of the drill core records. Geologic feature maps and the hazard risk map contained in this report are reduced (1 :500,000 scale) versions of the larger scale (1 :62,500) maps prepared for the Bureau of Mines as map folios.

Four years of intensive exploration effort by Newmont Mining Corp. came to a climax May 27 in Carlin, Nevada, when local, state and federal officials joined with company officers at a dedication ceremony saluting the start-up of the firm's wholly- owned subsidiary, Carlin Gold Mining Co. Before an invited audience at the plant site, Newmont's President Plato Malozemoff and Nevada's Senator Howard D. Cannon pushed a lever and watched the new melting furnace rotate until a brilliant orange-red stream of molten gold poured forth from its mouth. Two 1200-oz bricks of bullion were poured that day, and they are the first of many that will lift this mine into the number two slot among U.S. gold producers and fourth among all gold mines on the North American continent. Although Newmont Mining first entered the gold mining business in 1929 in Grass Valley, California, the Company had operated no gold producers since the well-known Government directive L208, issued in 1942, closed down U.S. gold mines for the duration of World War 11. Now it is back in the business in a big way-a $10 million mine and plant capable of producing 200,000 oz. per year. All the gold from the Carlin operations is earmarked for the U.S. Mint in San Francisco.
