Eh-pH measurements were taken on an industrial zinc reverse flotation process at Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited. Laboratory zinc reverse flotation testwork on samples of the feed to the industrial process produced Eh-pH data which were similar to the data from the industrial process.Later, the Eh-pH data from the industrial process were compared with data from a pilot plant scale zinc reverse flotation process at Mount Isa Mines Limited. After comparison with the data from Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation, deficiencies in the pilot plant Eh-pH data could be recognised and corrective actions were taken for the pilot plant. A robust pilot plant zinc reverse flotation process was obtained with consistent performance at the expected level.The implications of these findings for a range of processes are also discussed.

"Abstract - A heavy mineral survey of beach and dune sands including geochemical analysis for trace elements was undertaken to evaluate the economic potential of the sands and to understand the nature and distribution of the heavy minerals relative to potential source rocks. Results indicate that heavy minerals are generally derived from outcropping volcanic rocks that comprise a proportion of the hinterland in the south part of our survey area. The most abundant minerals are magnetite and pyroxene. The morphologies of the heavy mineral grains are angular to subangular, suggesting that they were transported short distances from the source rocks. Factors controlling heavy mineral distributions include wave and wind action, proximity to provenance, the fluvial drainage network, and longshore currrents.The most economically important mineral is ilmenite. Zircon and rutile concentrations are relatively minor and thus have lower economic potential."

Results of experimental work on the in situ combustion process were first published in this country in 1953' when Kuhn and Koch described results of a three-well test in Jefferson County, Okla. Shortly there-after Grant and Szasz2 described field studies in Nowata County, Okla., in which several modifications of the basic combustion process were investigated by injection of various oxidizing gas mixtures other than air. In the past five years speculation concerning this method of oil recovery has continued, with a number of interesting papers on various aspects of in situ combustion appearing in the literature3,4,5,6,7. However, only one of these' provided actual engineering information on pattern-type field experiments. The primary objectives of the Oklahoma three-well test were to check operation of specially designed electrical ignition equipment and evaluate problems associated with initiation of combustion in a natural oil sand reservoir. Immediately following successful completion of this test in the Pontotoc sand, plans were activated for a second field experiment to be conducted in the same sand a short distance away. The objective of this second field test1 as to establish a relationship between field observations and information derived from laboratory experimentation and computations. Secondary objectives of the test were to develop operating tech- niques and define operating problems, and to obtain information that would assist in the economic and engineering appraisals of the process. Careful planning was required since this test was designed with the hope of providing basic information on the characteristics and operation of a combustion drive. It was necessary to include test facilities which would not only permit precise control and measurement of the process variables but would also provide sufficient flexibility of control to insure that variables in the combustion process could be studied during the course of the test under a wide range of conditions. In order to accomplish these objectives elaborate instrumentation and several control wells were included in the design of the test installation. This type installation was felt to be well suited for an experimental study, but was in no respect intended as a counterpart of a commercial-scale operation. PRELIMINARY LABORATORY WORK An important objective of the field experiment, as stated previously, has been to obtain reliable data on operating variables which might be compared with similar data obtained in laboratory combustion tests. The value of successful correlations between quantities that can be measured in the laboratory and those obtained in a full-scale commercial venture has been well established for other industrial processes. The difficulty of following a process underground should make such correlations even more essential here. Also. approaching the field test phase of development of in situ combustion, it was considered desirable to precede design of test equipment with laboratory combustion studies under a variety of conditions to establish likely ranges of variables. These included temperature, air injection rate, frontal advance rate and produced gas composition.

The paper presents the foundation design and construction of a landmark urban redevelopment scheme in central London, UK. The scheme comprises the new Tottenham Court Road Underground station, Crossrail interchange box and associated over-site commercial development. The paper focuses on the design, procurement and construction of large diameter bored piles, up to 68m in depth, which form the foundation support system for the over-site commercial development at Denmark Place. The congestion below ground required an intricate foundation design solution which has been a catalyst for developing innovative load transfer arrangements and has resulted in the advancement of pile construction technology in the UK. The foundation system was also designed to cater for the construction of two significant elements of proposed below ground infrastructure. Selected large diameter piles have been constructed within 1.1m of live underground railway tunnels. An innovative D-shaped pile was constructed in a zone subject to particular spatial constraints. The proposed Crossrail tunnels will be bored within 1m of selected over-site development piles. In addition, a 30m deep excavation forming a new escalator box will be constructed in direct contact with the over-site development piles. The stakeholder engagement process is described together with the foundation design development and buildability assessment. The benefits from early collaboration between the designers and specialist contractors are highlighted. From an analytical design perspective, the entire foundation construction sequence was modelled in detail in order to assess the soil structure interaction and any potential adverse effects on existing elements of underground infrastructure. The results from the three dimensional numerical modelling simulation are compared with field monitoring data.

The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.

ONE of the phases of mining wide ore-bodies, such as are found in Broken Hill, is the laying-out and design of the sill floor gangway timber, When, in the above operation, a detail has to be repeated frequently, it is desirable in the interests of efficiency that that detail should be standardized as far as possible. Before arriving at a standard design e.g., a crosscut layout-it would seem necessary to compare its strength with some other unit of timber and see that the general design is at least as strong as the unit that has been taken for comparative purposes, In these notes no attempt is made to calculate the stresses to which timber underground is subjected, but merely to draw a comparison between the relative strengths of the various cross sections of timber in common use underground.It has been assumed for the purposes of comparison that the milling exerts pressure in a vertical plane only, and is uniformly distributed over any area. The American Petroleum Institute (API) method of predicting pile capacities in sands is reviewed. Factors that influence pile capacity such as soil parameters, pile parameters, loading effects and installation effects are listed. In addition, the simultaneous occurrence of physical phenomena such as grain crushing, pile shaking, stress-redistribution and plugging add to the uncertainty in the prediction model. To better understand the method of prediction, each parameter and the associated uncertainty is revisited. It is evident that these factors are inter­related and sometimes compensating. This discussion also draws attention to the influence that pile installation procedures can have on pile capacities and highlights the need for field experience with various pile installation procedures for designers. In summary, the strength of the method lies in its simplicity and ease of application, but the possible savings generated by an improved method are too substantial to ignore.

Groundwater and associated pore pressure represent elements that can have a negative impact on surface mining and slope stability. Groundwater flow and deformation within a slope influence each other. An increase in pore pressure will result in a decrease of effective stress; and conversely, if the pore pressure decreases, the effective stress increases. Slope analysis and slope design calculations require good information on pore pressure distribution around an open pit excavation. Until recently very little pore pressure data were available and assumptions had to be used. Location and design of measuring points depend on geological and structural setting, geotechnical domains and practicality. Good planning and the use of sensitive point piezometers to measure in situ pore pressures means that real-time data can be collected and used for the construction of flow nets, the determination of pore pressure distribution around an open pit mine, the validation of the dewatering/depressurization requirements, the calculation of the efficiency of the dewatering system and finally the use of pore pressure data in slope stability analysis. The recommended layout for a monitoring system, types and design of piezometers, data collection and use of the pore pressure data are presented.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful analytical and data display tools for mining industry management, capable of linking spatial features with tabular data and integrating communications across departmental boundaries. In this sense, the paper point out the GIS application concentrates in four technical areas of underground mining: ownership and mineral claims; exploration management; production; and mine safety. GIS provides land and exploration managers with the ability to consolidate and archive claim data and to georeference property maps defined in local coordinates into world coordinate systems. GIS’s proximity analysis identifies areas of potential safety concern and points to and maps the shortest routes to emergency exits, facilitating the prompt evacuation of mine personnel.

A volcanic sequence is described from the Golden Cross Mine, Waihi, New Zealand. The sequence includes seven lithostratigraphic units comprising flow and pyroclastic units of Coromandel Group andesite and dacite and overlying Whitianga Group dacite and rhyolite which is intruded by the Golden Cross dacite porphyry and rhyolite dykes. The sequence is mineralised and is unconformably overlain by two post-mineral units, the lacustrine Waitekauri beds and Omahine Subgroup andesite.   Detailed structural analysis of mine data has identified four deformational events (D 1-D4) and related these to the gold-silver mineralising events. Faulting was coeval with the mineralization and directly controlled the development, localisation, style and geometry of the ore shoots. Mineralization developed in competent lithologies where dilation occurred during faulting. The Empire Fault is the master shear which controlled fluid flow. Mineralised veining developed in response to tectonic pulses occurring at slightly different stages as represented by the underground Empire vein complex and the open pit vein array. The mineralising events culminated with the deposition of barren calcite veins. Post-mineral movement along the Western Boundary fault appears to have offset the orebody.

This paper will review the design and application of AQUILA’s drill monitoring, control and positioning systems currently in use throughout the world and some of the benefits that derive through their use. In 1993, AQUILA became the first company to install a high precision, cm level, real-time GPS receiver on a blasthole drill. "In February, 1975, the President of Georgia Iron Works Company, Mr. Tom Hagler decided to build a new hydraulic laboratory to water performance test all of the companies' centrifugal slurry pumps.Equipment procurement started in March, 1975, by ordering of a mini computer data acquisition system.Work commenced on the lab in July, 1976, by erection of a Butler Building and the laying down of a 20,000 gallon concrete sump.By late October, a facility compromising two water test loops of 8"" and 18"" pipe diameter was in operation carrying out head quantity and suction performance tests on pumps up to 16"" in size.In August of the following year, an 8"" diameter pipe slurry loop was installed to enable pipe friction and deposition velocity of a slurry to be measured in an 8"" inside diameter pipe.With the encouragement of Reserve Mining in Minnesota and IMCC in Florida, this was followed in March, 1978, by the addition of over 300 feet of 18"" diameter pipe to make up an 18"" diameter pipe slurry system complete with head loss and deposition velocity observation sections.The office and shop areas of the lab were again expanded in April, 1978, to provide further expansion to the test sections and staff facilities."

"All mineral processing facilities that use girth gear driven mills need to inspect the gear teeth on a routine basis, whether it be every six months to every three years. The inspection frequency depends on gear tooth condition, and the objective is to ensure the operational integrity of the gear teeth. Conventional methods such as magnetic particle testing, visual inspection or dye penetrant examinations rely heavily on operator interpretation. At best, these techniques can determine whether a defect exists, but are unable to provide information on defect severity. This paper describes the use of combining combined eddy current array (eca) and alternating current field measurement (acfm) to provide a complete survey of all surface breaking indications on the whole gear tooth depth. This method accurately determines the size, length and depth of any cracks found on the surface.INTRODUCTION In order to gain a fundamental understanding of the evolving operational and production behavior of a piece of machinery over a specified time period as part of an effective condition monitoring program, a robust data collection process must be firmly established and adhered to. To be effectively implemented within an organization, a condition monitoring program must have support of not only the maintenance, production and engineering staffs, but also executive management support to ensure successful roll out to realize the maximum productivity of the machinery and subsequent cost-savings. One of the key elements of a mineral processing facility that use gear driven SAG Mills as a primary stage for grinding solution, is the integrity of the critical gear unit that drive the mill. For the maintenance team, condition monitoring on the gear unit is crucial for preventative maintenance. A catastrophic failure in the critical gear unit would require a minimum of ten days to replace the gear set, depending on the damage occurred. This, of course, would only be applicable if the client had a spare critical gear set in inventory. If a gear set had to be ordered, it could take from four months to two years to receive a new gear set. For example, in 2007, there was a global backlog of these types of gears sets resulting in a two year delivery. The maintenance costs associated with a catastrophic failure of this type would easily cost in the millions."

Although once fairly common as a method of coal preparation in the United States, dry cleaning has virtually disappeared. Low-rank coals used for power generation in the western U.S. are suited for dry cleaning because water has limited availability in the American west. Surface moisture added through wet cleaning offsets energy improvement achieved from mineral matter reduction. Information will be presented on the commercial application of dry cleaning in North America, the historic development and current status of the technology, and the introduction of modern processing theory and control technology to the design of dry cleaning equipment and plants.

The report states accident rates for gassy/dusty coal mines represented as an ergatic system "man – machine - environment" with further analysis by the method of conditional probabilities. A coal mine has been analyzed with allowance for the attending personnel, equipment and environment as a sequence of events and states. Probabilities of operational states have been determined and prediction of mine behavior has been made on the basis of investigation findings for equipment and the personnel states, and analysis of the environment (i.e. mine and mining conditions). Utilization of expert estimation methods has been considered for determining major operational parameters of gassy/dusty mines. The importance of standardized values of permissible occupational risks (permissible probability of accident, PA) is demonstrated. It is also stated that a procedure is essential to determine these values, involving regular check-ups of the integral safety criterion at all mines and further development of customized recommendations for individual mines on efficient improvement of accident situations. Methodology to determine the assessment criteria has been developed and scientifically substantiated for permissible accident rates in hazardous industries.

Compositional data constitutes a special class of quantitative measurements involving parts of a whole. The sample space has an algebraic-geometric structure different from that of real-valued data. A subcomposition is a subset of all possible parts. When compositional data values include geographical locations, they are also regionalized variables. In the Earth sciences, geochemical analyses are a common form of regionalized compositional data. Ordinarily, there are measurements only at data locations. Geostatistics has proven to be the standard for spatial estimation of regionalized variables but, in general, the compositional character of the geochemical data has been ignored. This paper presents in detail an application of cokriging for the modelling of compositional data using a method that is consistent with the compositional character of the data. The uncertainty is evaluated by a Monte Carlo procedure. The method is illustrated for the contents of arsenic and iron in groundwaters in Bangladesh, which have the peculiarity of being measured in milligrams per litre, units for which the sum of all parts does not add to a constant. Practical results include maps of estimates of the geochemical elements in the original concentration units, as well as measures of uncertainty, such as the probability that the concentration may exceed a given threshold. Results indicate that probabilities of exceedance in previous studies of the same data are too low.

James C. M. Li (United States Steel Covp.)—The author has discovered a single analytical relation between the minimum, or the steady-state, creep rate and the applied stress confirming a statement made earlier by orn" that such relation should exist and should reduce to the power law at low-stress levels and to the exponential law at high-stress levels. However, as pointed out by the author, all the available theories of creep are not adequate to explain such a single relation. Inspired by such a statement, I have made a suggestion concerning a possible explanation13 of the new relation. This is based on the concept that the rate-controlling step is the cooperative motion of a short dislocation segment. The nature of and the reason for the cooperation have been discussed13 as well as the reason why the motion of the dislocation could be controlled by the mobility of the short segments. A natural short segment has been proposed13 to be the node formed at the intersection of two dislocations. The reason why the node may contain only a few atoms has not been discussed and the application of the proposed model to all the metals and alloys reported in this paper has not been attempted. It seems appropriate to include these in this discussion. The model was partly inspired by the substructure recently observed in the electron microscope on creep specimens. One such example is shown in Fig. 48 in Darken's Campbell Memorial Lecture. The substructure is a collection of dislocation intersections and irregular networks. No pileups have ever been observed in such specimens. A closer look at the network indicates that one set of dislocations is more straight than the other set sug- gesting that the other set may be mobile in the plane of the net. Since, for the network to survive the creep deformation, some dislocation reaction has to take place at the intersection of the two sets of dislocations, the mobile dislocation, even if it can slip in the plane of the net, will have difficulty in moving at these intersections. To illustrate, an idealized network is shown in Fig. 9. The thin lines represent the set of dislocations which are mobile and can slip in the plane of the net except at the nodes which are formed at the intersection of the two sets of dislocations. The other set of dislocations, represented by the thick lines, may have a Burgers vector which is not parallel to the plane of the net, and therefore may be immobile. Because of this nonparallel Burgers vector, the Burgers vector of the node, which is avectorial sum of the Burgers vectors of the two sets of dislocations, will also be nonparallel to the plane of the net. Therefore, the node cannot slip in the plane of the net and the set of mobile dislocations will have to drag the node along as indicated in Fig. 9. Now the problem is how many atoms could be involved in the nodes. Exact calculation of the length of the node is a difficult task especially since the length should be a steady-state length and not an equilibrium length. An estimate of the equilibrium length can be made by balancing the line tension of all the dislocations. The results would be a small fraction of the length 1 between nodes as shown in Fig. 10. In some instances such a calculation shows that the node will not be formed. But, since the calculation is only approximate, it does not rule out the possibility of the formation of a short node. A new method, localized uniform conditioning (LUC), was proposed in 2006 for modelling grades of small blocks of ore when data spacing is too broad for their accurate modelling by the linear regression based techniques, such as kriging (Abzalov, 2006). It represents a modified uniform conditioning (UC) technique that calculates the grade distribution functions for the large panels. LUC uses partitioning of the panels onto the small blocks and then ranks them in increasing order of grade. Based on the block ranks, a single grade value can be deduced for each block from the UC model of the gradetonnage relationships of the corresponding panel. After being first presented in 2006, the LUC method has been implemented in ISATIS© (commercial software) and became one of the common approaches for grade estimation when data spacing is broad in comparison with the estimated block size. Several years of study on the LUC method and its application to different geological environments, have allowed identification of the strengths and weaknesses of the method, which are as follows: ? The method produces accurate grade-tonnage functions, which are in a good accordance with a volume-variance relationship principles ? An initial ranking of the selective mining unit (SMU) blocks can be made by direct kriging from the sparse data grid. Therefore, the LUC method can be particularly useful at the early stages of exploration and mining project evaluations when sparsely distributed data is often the only available information ? Accuracy of the local estimation depends on the SMU ranking techniques. When ranking performed by direct kriging of the SMU blocks their spatial distribution is approximate. When the variogram of the studied variable is characterized by a large nugget effect, the block ranks produced by kriging can significantly differ from their ?true? distribution ? Block ranking can be improved using auxiliary data, either geophysical or geochemical. This allows use of the LUC method for integrating different data sets. In particular, LUC can be used for grade control in open pits by integrating resource definition data (e.g. drill-hole assays) and blast-hole assays. The latter are used for the block ranking.

"The goal of estimation is considered in the light of decision analysis. A simple example reveals the essential elements of decision-making in the face of uncertainty. A second example shows that these elements are also key features of many mining decisions. These two examples cause us to revive an old probabilistic notion that the goal of estimation should be to quantify what is unknown. The conditional probability distribution provides the complete statement of one's uncertainty. Once the conditional probability distribution has been established, one should retain as an estimate the value which minimizes some objective loss function. A third example shows how the ""best"" estimate depends on the chosen loss function. Current practice is almost exclusively based on the least squares method, which assumes a loss function which penalizes underestimation and overestimation equally. This is unfortunate not only because symmetry is an unrealistic assumption but also because mining offers a rare opportunity to state the loss function directly in terms of profitability. Both the theoretical framework and the practical tools exist to allow us to reconsider the conventional notion of the ""best"" estimate. IntroductionThis paper looks at estimation in the mining industry from the point-of-view of decision analysis. Virtually all decisions depend on estimates since few of the important parameters are ever known exactly. In this paper we will be referring mainly to the estimation of ore grades, though the approach discussed here is generally applicable to any decision in which relevant information is uncertain.In the first section we look at a very simple example of decision-making in the face of uncertainty. We will then tum to a mining example and see that the essential features of the simple example still pertain. From these two examples it will be clear that the decision analysis approach rests on two key concepts: the conditional probability distribution and the loss function. A third example demonstrates how different loss functions produce different ""best"" estimates from the same conditional probability distribution. In the final sections we willexamine the current practice of estimation in the mining industry. Though the tools for estimating the conditional probability distribution already exist, a change in the way we think about ""best"" estimates is needed. Very little attention is presently paid to the loss function even though it is readily available in many mining applications."
