CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, is, at present, constructing an underground tunnel and cavern network to house a Large Electron Positron (LEP) colliding beam machine. This paper describes the techniques adopted to permit the excavation and temporary support of the access shafts through a series of glacial moraines, at depths of up to 80 m, to reach the bed-rock. Owing to the presence of superficial and deep water-tables, the variable nature of the moraine deposits and, above all, the tight work schedule, a combination of diaphragm walling and ground freezing was employed.

This paper deals with the construction of the Effluent Outfall Diffusers which form part of the outfall for the Deer Island sewage project. The work was executed 15 km out to sea in Massachusetts Bay and required the drilling, installation, grouting and accurate determination of the actual position of 55 riser shafts in 33.5 m deep water. Although not strictly a "foundation", the contractor's approach to the installation of the diffusers was a logical development from many marine foundation projects executed by the Contracting companies over the last decades. The only previous application of this design of outfall had been in Australia where offshore oil drilling techniques had been adapted for use in riser installation.

An increase in the importance of low-grade materials as sources of gold and silver has led to the need for improved analytical methods on leach solutions, ores and various effluents, residues, and in-process streams. These are required by plant operators as guides to process control and for accounting pldrposes. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and AAS preceded by pre- concentration have been applied successfully to resolve many such problems. However, AAS is no panacea and imprecision or loss of accuracy can result if adequate precautions are not taken to prevent losses and eliminate interferences. The recent methods are discussed together with methods for overcoming difficulties. Comparisons with more classical analytical techniques are also given.

The stratigraphy of the Western Coalfield is briefly reviewed and the important units of the Lithgow Coal Measures, particularly the coal seams, are defined. The possibility of coal measures of Tomago age ocurring near the edges of the Sydney Basin is discussed onpresent evidence.Using data obtained from unpublished drilling records, detailed structural, isopachous and lithofaeies maps have been drawn. These show that the structure of the coal basin has been influenced by the underlying basement in many ways.The prominent jointing in the overlying Triassic sandstones is discussed in relation to jointing in the coal measure sediments.It is concluded that in addition to the general knowledge obtained with respect to the coal basin, useful information regarding coal quality and quantity can be gained by the study of broader sedimentary and structural features.INTRODUCTIONThe term "Western Coalfield" covers approximately the area from Katoomba to Rylstone, together with the smaller, separate Ulan area (Fig. 1). The area studied is part of the great sedimentary Sydney basin named by Osborne (1948). The first discovery of coal in Sitlt in the area was made in 1824 by Andrew Brown, although George Bass noted the presence of coal float in the Grose River in 1797. Production is recorded from the Western Coalfield in 1838 but mining was intermittent until 1868 when mines in the Lithgowvalley (producing coal from the Lithgow Seam) came into production. In 1882 the Katoomba Seam was first worked at Katoomba.The work of J. E. Carne (1903, 1908) defined the limits of the Coal Measure sediments and also contributed a great amount of valuable detailed information about the region.

"In the autumn of 1977 Bethlehem management initiated feasibility studies on recovery of by-product molybdenum from concentrate produced at the existing Highland Valley mining operation. Over the fall and winter months test work was carried forward concurrent with design, flowsheet, equipment specification and cost studies. The decision was made to go ahead with a 200 ton-per-day treatment plant. Construction started in early 1978 and progressed to an initial start-up stage in mid-June. Full operational status was reached in August 1978. Operational results through August 1979 are presented. INTRODUCTIONBethlehem Copper Corporation operates a 20,000 ton-per-day Open Pit Mine and Flotation Plant located in the Highland Valley, some 30 air miles Southwest of Kamloops and 20 miles Southeast of Ashcroft, B.C.Two open pits are worked; the Iona Pit with limited reserves of higher Mo content, and the lower grade, more extensive Jersey Pit. Upwards of 150 tons per day of bornite-chalcopyrite bulk concentrate is produced, ranging 0.25% to 1.5% in molybdenum grade depending on the area mined."

The understanding and the development of sound theoretical basis concerning the pile foundations has been phenomenal during the past few decades, considering the thousands of years the piles have evidently been in use. The importance of the quality assurance and the need for verification of load bearing capacity is being further reinforced rather than undermined by these developments. This is evidenced by significant developments made in the pile load test technology in recent decades, making it possible to make judicious selection of a test method, or a package of test methods, suitable for a given situation. The selection depends on the objective of carrying out the test and the reliability desired. Presently, the possible selection ranges from dynamic to static methods. The extent of dynamic effect in a test can be reckoned based on a dimensionless parameter defined as the 'relative duration'. Examples of different load tests are given for illustration of the different methods currently in use.

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. Construction of a pump station, consisting of an inlet chamber, wet well and pump chamber, required excavation to a depth of 9.7 m (32 ft) below ground surface and more than 7.6 m (25 ft) below the ground water table in a rural, but rapidly developing part of southern New Jersey. Private houses are located [ ] within a few hundred feet of the pump station that use shallow wells for water supply. The pump station design anticipated support of the entire pump station on shallow foundations bearing directly on the underlying natural soils. However, during construction, uncontrolled ground water flow caused ground loss and damage to the bearing qualities of foundation soils. As a result, remedial repairs were required including support of the pump station on drilled pile foundations and releveling of the pump chamber that had settled. This case study is an example of where a poor understanding of the significance of upward flowing ground water had a major impact on the cost of construction. Anticipated subsurface conditions The pump station layout is shown in Fig. 1 with the locations of two borings made prior to construction superimposed. One of the borings was located within the footprint of the deep wet well excavation. Generally, this is not advisable where a deep excavation is required below the ground water table. This is because there is a history of projects where ground water seepage, or pressure, has broken out into an excavation through an ungrouted borehole and compromised the integrity of foundation soils. Logs of the borings did not indicate that the borings [ ] were grouted upon completion.

Knoop hardness measurements were carried out on large grains of iodide titanium containing different amounts of oxygen. For each oxygen content the hardness is recorded ainingas a function of the crystal orientation and of the angle 4 between the indenter diagonal and the projection of the C (hexad) axis in the surface. The results can be expressed by the following relation; hardness = n-k cos 2ø, where n and k are constants for a given oxygen content and crystal surface orientation. A NISOTROPY of hardness is a well-known phe-nomenon and has been reported for many metals.1-3 At the present time, however, such information is not available in the literature for titanium. Consequently, a systematic study of the simultaneous effects of oxygen content and crystallographic orientation on the hardness of titanium was undertaken in this laboratory. Evaluations of oxygen content in titanium are frequently carried out through hardness tests. Although such procedures may be justified in small grain specimens, the results of the present investigation indicate that the anisotropy of hardness should be taken into account in the case of coarsegrained specimens as well as in the case of pronounced preferred orientation. Materials and Experimental Procedures Iodide titanium, 99.99 pet pure and containing of the order of 0.002 wt pet O, was used throughout this investigation. The metal was arc melted in an argon atmosphere and cold rolled into strips 1/16 in. thick. These strips were subsequently recrystal-lized and strain annealed in vacuum (10" mm Hg or better) at 850°C in order to produce crystals varying in diameter from 10 to 25 mm. Oxygen was introduced into selected large crystals by heating at 700°C in an atmosphere of pure oxygen under an observed pressure of approximately 50 mm Hg. Each sample was subsequently annealed in vacuum at 850°C for 100 hr, in order to homogenize the oxygen content throughout the specimen. It was found that longer annealing was not necessary, for no change of surface hardness in a given direction was detected after prolonged annealing. The oxygen content was determined by the difference in weight of the specimens before and after the oxidation-annealing cycle. The accuracy of oxygen determination is within ±0.1 mg in samples weighing 0.5 to 1 g. A vacuum fusion analysis of oxygen was performed on several samples and gave results in good agreement with the ones obtained by the weight change. It should be emphasized that expected weight losses through evaporation of the metal in vacuum at 850°C' are many orders of magnitude lower than the precision of these measurements. Following the annealing treatment, both oxidized and unoxidized crystals were carefully polished. All detectable traces of surface cold working were removed by repeated polishing and etching. Laue back reflection X-ray patterns were taken for each crystal for the purpose of determining the orientation and ascertaining the absence of substructures detectable by this method. Hardness measurements, using a 1 kg load, were subsequently carried out on a Tukon hardness tester equipped with a Knoop indenter. The Knoop indenter was used throughout this work because indentations obtained by means of a Vickers indenter are considerably distorted due to the anisotropy of the elastic constants in titanium. In this paper, the surrounding rocks and the supports in a longwall are taken as an integral, i.e. a system. The structural characteristics and behavior of the system are discussed based on in-situ observations. A set of equations, which describe the interaction among the support, immediate roof and main roof, are developed. These equations can be used to design the longwall powered supports more reasonably and economically.

Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. Different ore types result from the irregular spatial distribution of the associated alkaline/carbonatite rocks and the zoned alteration profile within which apatite may have undergone reprecipitation. Different flotation responses are caused by their mineralogy, iron oxide impregnation and grain-size characteristics. Samples from seven deposits were crushed, screened and separated before being studied by chemical analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy. Two main apatite varieties with peculiar crystal morphology were identified: hydroxy-fluorapatite as the primary phase and carbonate-fluorapatite as the reprecipitated phase. The former occurs as prismatic or ovoid grains and the latter as polycrystalline aggregates or crusts on the primary grains; both are associated with iron oxide coatings (primary) or intergrowths (secondary). Microflotation tests showed variations in flotability for particular apatite associations as well as intensity of iron oxide coatings. The differences in flotation behaviour can be related to morphological properties and chemical substitution in the apatite structure

Automation technologies are increasingly envisaged to improve underground mining productivity. However, the technologies need to be used and adopted gradually in order to get the best benefits. This paper presents the technical and operational aspects of autoguided production vehicles at Brunswick Mine. During 2001 Noranda?s Brunswick Mine has successfully commissioned an automated haulage zone where two optically guided trucks transport ore from a remotely operated chute to two orepasses. Operational advantages include increased system capacity and enhanced safety and comfort for the operator. The data obtained up to now indicate that the system can operate reliably in mine production

The mechanized mining cycle using loaders and shuttle cars had it speak in terms of usage in the mining industry during 1950 through 1960. In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

The vertical travel lead, referred to as "VTL" system, was first developed and patented by C.W. Bermingham in the 1970's. This lead system was developed in response to the fundamental limitations of either a fixed lead or hanging lead system. The fixed lead system is well suited to level job sites with few obstructions and has the advantage of faster positioning of the lead, the hanging lead is very adaptable to different elevations and batter piles but takes much longer to position. Therefore the Vertical Travel Lead was developed to combine the advantages of fixed leads, fast and accurate positioning, with the ability to adjust the height of the lead base up or down. The VTL lead is connected to the boom by a sliding connection which allows the lead to be elevated or lowered below grade. The advantages of the VTL system were recognized by many foundation specialists and they have become the Industry standard in Canada , US Railway Construction , and many parts of the USA.

As part of the Woodrow Wilson Replacement Bridge project several damaged wetland and environmental areas were to be mitigated. One of the mitigation projects consisted of constructing a Denil fish ladder around Peirce Mill Dam in Rock Creek National Park, Washington, D.C. The dam is a historic structure operated by the National Park Service. The fish ladder is located between the east abutment of the dam and Beach Drive, a major collector road. Construction of the fish ladder required removal of a portion of the east abutment and an excavation that extended about 22-ft below the pavement of Beach Ave. It was not possible to close Beach Drive except for very brief intervals or at night; therefore, a support of excavation system that would minimize disruption to the public was required. The high groundwater required that the groundwater be cut off prior to excavation; the random rubble and soil fill, and shallow but erratic rock surface precluded driving sheet piling. A jet grout system was selected because the grout probe could penetrate the rubble fill, stabilize a variety of soil conditions, and cut off the ground water prior to excavation. It was not possible to construct a stable wall without tiebacks or soil nails. Given the schedule and tight working conditions it was decided that soil nails through the jet grout wall facing would be the most cost effective method, as it did not reduce the working space as rakers would and would be more cost effective than prestressed tiebacks.

Drill hole magnetometric resistivity (DHMMR) is a relatively recent addition to the explorationistsÆ suite of techniques for finding further resources in the vicinity of a drill hole. The method relies on gathering of an applied current into zones which are less resistive than the country rocks and it was first applied to exploration programs looking for weakly conductive sulphides, such as, for example, carbonate-hosted zinc deposits. More recently, it has been applied to a wider range of deposit styles, including highly conductive nickel sulphides. It has been found that the technique is capable of not only detecting mineralisation not seen by conventional electromagnetic (EM) techniques, but it can detect at a greater distance. Also, whilst EM is superior at defining tabular-shaped conductors, DHMMR may be more effective at finding cigar shaped sulphides. This paper presents a number of examples illustrating these findings.
