"Two composite samples of a gold-bearing ore from North Western Quebec (Barry Township) were tested to assess their grindability, recovery by flotation and Knelson concentrator as well as extraction using cyanidation.Work index values (BWi) for two composites were found to be 10.4 and 11.0 kWh/tonne, respectively. Flotation tests involved feed samples for which the particle size ranged from a P80 value of 205 ?m to 53 ?m, which resulted in gold recoveries of 91.8% to 95.8% (at gold grades of 130 to 140 g/tonne). Cyanidation tests indicated gold extraction levels ranging from 94.2 to 97.5%. Higher, recoveries were obtained at finer grind sizes and higher cyanide strengths. However, the grind size had a bigger impact on gold leaching. Gold grade and recoveries obtained with the Knelson concentrator device were lower than those obtained by flotation. Mass recoveries to concentrate products strongly depended on the fluidization pressure used. High gold recoveries can be obtained generally at low water pressures of 3 to 4 psi. Higher water pressures produced more selectivity at the expense of higher gold losses.It can be concluded that the gold ore samples tested have good characteristics due to moderate levels of energy requirement, high gold recoveries and extraction rates attainable.INTRODUCTIONBench scale testing of ore samples is an important step in the long series of metallurgical and economic studies involved in bringing new ore bodies into production (Coleman, 1980). Through a laboratory testing program, the behaviour of an ore in a particular process on a larger scale can be established. In an exploratory manner, this testing can be helpful for classification of ores in terms of “good ore” or “problematic ore” by providing preliminary information on recoverability of target minerals. Potential problems if any can be assessed by further investigation of products (e.g., middlings) obtained as a result of testing. A detailed bench scale experimental program in the metallurgical laboratory can also provide the background work for flowsheet development. Depending on the simplicity or complexity of the ore to be tested and type of details required from a testing program, the amount of samples required in the mineral processing laboratory can vary from several kg to more than one hundred kg depending on how detailed the metallurgical testing program is."

The importance of structural geology in open pit slope stability is overlooked in many mining operations due to pressures to cut costs and minimize mine personnel. As a result, mine geology staff are often unable to keep up with geological mapping of the pit slopes due to other day to day production oriented tasks. In some instances, key structural controls that contribute to slope instability may not be identified until after a slope instability has initiated, at which time it may be difficult or impossible to delineate these features in the field. Even for small slopes, understanding the engineering and structural geology of the rock mass, as well as the effects of groundwater and blasting practices, are of key importance to slope stability. Two case histories are presented as examples of mining operations that experienced slope instability with little more than anecdotal information about the structural and groundwater conditions encountered during mining. By conducting field reconnaissance, simple slope stability analyses and ongoing slope monitoring, practical remedial measures were implemented, allowing continued safe mining operation.

The published liquidus data on the Pb-PbS system have been correlated on the basis of one-coefficient Margules equations. Thermodynamic properties of the components of this system have been obtained, and it has also been found that the calculated miscibility gap of this system exists over a very narrow range of temperature (1041 to 1058°C).

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. Production of tin and tungsten concentrates began in 1932, and to date more than 550,000 tons of ore have been mined for a recovery of 8,856 tons of tin concentrates, and 3,056 tons of wolfram concentrates, valued at approximately £6,500,000.This paper reports part of an investigation undertaken by the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of C.S.I.R.O. to study the mineral composition of the ore in relation to the apparent failure of cassiterite and wolfram mineralization to extend below the present working limits of the mine, and was first issued as Mineragrapnic Report No. 639.GENERAL GEOLOGY:The deposit consists of a series of quartz veins in a northsouth trending sheeted zone, transecting folded slates and...

"Quality control of drilled shafts and CFA piles is greatly dependent upon the practices of the site personnel. In many applications it is difficult or not possible to fully inspect the shaft prior to concreting, such as when the shaft is drilled under slurry. CFA piles are cast with no ability to inspect the shaft prior to concreting. There are numerous methods currently available to assess the integrity of drilled shafts and CFA piles. This paper will compare evaluations by three existing non-destructive test (NDT) methods with a new method of Thermal Integrity Profiling for assessing integrity in drilled shafts and CFA piles. This Thermal Integrity Profiling method determines the integrity over 100% of the shaft cross section, both inside and outside the reinforcing cage, by measuring the hydration temperature of the concrete along the length of the shaft. These temperature measurements are made typically only 12 to 48 hours after concrete placement, thus accelerating the construction process. Thermal Integrity Profiling will be described in detail and the Thermal Integrity Profile (TIP) results from several shafts with purpose built defects will be discussed along with several case histories from drilled shafts and CFA piles where Thermal Integrity Profiling was used. The case histories will compare TIP with various other NDT tests utilized on these particular piles including comparisons with Low Strain Integrity Testing and Cross Hole Sonic Logging. Test results for the various methods will be discussed and the excavation of the upper portion of one drilled shaft will be shown and discussed. IntroductionDrilled shafts can be a desirable foundation element in many applications due to the large axial and lateral capacities which are attainable for very large drilled shafts. Drilled shafts can be cast in a dry hole which allows for inspection of the hole prior to casting, but the casting process is very difficult to nearly impossible to inspect with any accuracy. Drilled shafts are frequently cast under slurry as a means to stabilize the surrounding soils during the construction process. When casting a drilled shaft under slurry, it is very difficult to accurately inspect the hole prior to casting and it is equally difficult to inspect the shaft during the casting process. CFA piles are another popular choice for their relative ease and speed of installation. The trend has been larger CFA piles carrying greater loads, which makes quality control critical for these piles. Many of the above mentioned processes are blind to inspection and therefore the chances increase for having defects present in the completed elements."

The war in Vietnam stretched into another decade, an American President was at the brink of impeachment, the earth was given its own day, twin tower monuments of American ingenuity were completed in New York and would stand high above the Manhattan skyline for 31 years. Inflation, oil shortages, low commodity prices and America’s 200th birthday were part of the decade — it was the 1970s. For the mining industry, the demands of the decade would be high and the challenges would be significant. Because of the many challenges that lined up in front of it, the mining industry was forced to work smarter and more efficiently. The industry also expanded its borders in search of new resources and struggled along with the rest of the world through a fuel crisis, inflation and a recession.

Introduction Joints often have profound effects on elastic properties and strength of rock masses and therefore on rock slope stability. In surface mine slopes, joints are usually too numerous to be taken into account individually, so an equivalent properties approach is necessary. Previous work that treats a jointed rock mass as an equivalent composite material of joints and intact rock between resulted in excellent agreement between estimated and true rock mass elastic moduli in case of fully persistent joints (e.g., Pariseau, 1999) Rock mass failure mechanisms on joints and through intact rock were retained obviating the need for an equivalent rock mass strength. Impersistent joints, which are not continuous on a joint plane, can be accommodated (Pariseau, 2003). However, slope stability analysis of a large, deep copper mine indicated a need for computational efficiency even in two-dimensional analysis of vertical sections through pit walls (Puri, 2006). The analyses by the popular finite element method used small elements of bench size near the pit slopes and much larger elements away from the pit walls. The reasons for the graded meshes were numerical quality (small elements) and computational economy (large elements). Small elements contained only a few joints, while the larger elements contained hundreds of joints and led to impractical computation run times (days!). A new modeling procedure that recognizes sufficiently large elements as representative volume elements (REV’s) overcomes this obstacle. A companion improvement recognizes the concept of a representative area element (RAE) in association with joint impersistence and the probability that joint material occupies a considered site. Both are steps towards greater model realism and a practical slope stability analysis procedure. Consider the open pit mine photo shown in Figure 1(a), a companion plan view in Figure 1(b), and the problem of slope stability where high slope angles favor economics but low slope angles favor safety. These competing factors in surface mining generally result in some sections of the mine that have unstable slopes that require monitoring and perhaps mitigating action to improve stability. Although stability of a given section may not be easy to quantify with a single number, useful design guidance can be obtained from a finite element analysis of a proposed mining sequence leading to future pit slopes and profiles. The presence of water from rain and snow melt indicates a need for a coupled analysis that links water pressure, effective stress and total stress (Schmelter, 2001).

The epithermal gold-silver deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Epithermal deposits consist of quartz veins, quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias that are mainly hosted in subaerial andesitic or rhyolitic rocks of Tertiary age. The deposits were formed at depths of typically less than 1 km and at temperatures between 180¦ and 320¦C, although ore grade mineralisation was generally deposited at less than 270¦C.   In New Zealand, epithermal deposits occur in association with late Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Northland, Coromandel and Taupo volcanic regions. All of the past and present gold production, estimated at greater than 380 t (along with 1300 t Ag) comes from the Miocene-Pliocene Coromandel Volcanic Zone, where about 50 epithermal gold-silver deposits occur over a 200 km long belt. In Northland, silver and mercury have been produced from hot spring type epithermal deposits, and several gold-silver prospects have been identified. Ore grade gold-silver mineralisation is currently being deposited in several active geothermal fields of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, and extinct geothermal systems occur on the western side of the zone. The active systems have provided natural laboratories to help understand the processes of epithermal mineralisation.

This paper presents a brief account of the plant which has been developed at Port Pirie to recover, by vacuum distillation, the greater part of the zinc content of desilverized lead. The present plant is an experimental unit, which is run in conjunction with the normal refinery practice, but can be cut out of the circuit. It will shortly be dismantled and duplicate units will be built on the sites chosen for the final plant installation.The unit described here has treated flows of 16 to 37 tons per hour of desilverized lead, to recover 90 to 95 per cent of the zinc contained in it. It is not intended here to detail all aspects of the vacuum dezincing operation, nor the developments which precededthe adoption of this design. The essential features of the present plant will be described and, where these are peculiar to the present experimental location, the intended alteration for the final plant will also be mentioned. OUTLINE OF PLANT AND PROCESSLead issues from the continuous desilverizing kettle at about 350° C. containing about 0·57 per cent Zn. It is conveyed by a tiled launder to the preheater, where it is heated to 580-620° C.Hot lead from the preheater enters the vacuum vessel via a barometric leg. From a reservoir holding about 19 tons of lead it falls by gravity in a thin film exposed to high vacuum (20-50 microns)3 and leaves the vessel via a barometric leg, entering the lead pot. The lead leaves this pot at 540-560° C., containing 0·03 to 0·06 per cent Zn, which is removed, together with residual antimony of 0.02 to 0·06 per cent, by a separate final refining process.

New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).

THE township of Costerfield is situated in the parish of Costerfield, county of Dalhousie, and lies 6 miles east of Heathcote and 30 miles south-east of Bendigo. It is separated from Heathcote by the Mt. Ida Range, which forms the western boundary of the Silurian formation. It is situated at the head-waters of Tin-pot Creek, a small southerly tributary of the Deegay Ponds Creek, which flows east to the Goulburn River.The field was discovered in 1860 by two prospectors, Coster and Field, who were guided there by a shepherd, M Nicol Coster and Field had already discovered an antimony lode about three miles nearer Heathcote, when M Nicol offered to guide them to the larger outcrop. The main Costerfield reef at that time projected above the surface, and was white through oxidation, though the bluey sulphide showed on fracture. No alluvial gold of any consequence was obtained at Costerfield, but a little was obtained, at Redcastle, 7 miles to the north, and in some of the gullies to the east.Following its discovery there came a period of prosperity to Costerfield, while the mining operations were confined to the oxidized zone. The early success of mining at Costerfield was due to the gold values, and it is probable that the oxidized zone was secondarily enriched. The earliest available record of values is a crushing of Coster and Co. on the Antimony reef (now known as the Costerfield reef), when 200 tons from a depth of 70 ft. averaged 4 oz. per ton in July, 1861. At this time a crushing mill had not yet been erected at Costerfield, and the ore was carted and treated at Redcastle. The massive antimony ore, consisting of mixed oxides and sulphides, was separated by hand-picking as "marketable ore," and the remainder crushed for gold. The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

The San Vicente Pipeline Tunnel Project involves the construction of an 8.5-foot-diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel is located in extremely variable geologic conditions of strong granitic and volcanic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. One reach of the tunnel is a 5,200-foot mixed face reach that includes Friars Formation Conglomerate overlying granitic rock. Due to the variable ground conditions in this reach, the use of a TBM was deemed too risky and the contract documents required drill-and-blast and hand mining methods. Although it was not required, the contractor elected to construct this reach using NATM methods. This paper describes the geology of the 5,200-foot mixed-face reach, the design evaluation, and the construction challenges faced on this project.

The Brewer Gold Mine is an open-pit, heap leach operation that processes about 122 kt/m (135,000 stpm). The mine is operated by Brewer Gold Inc., a subsidiary of Westmont Mining Inc., and is located near Jefferson, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Columbia, SC (Fig. 1). All of the ore to date has been produced from a breccia body of hydrothermal origin and a related smaller body of fault-controlled ore, known as the B-6. Reserves at the time the mine commenced production were 4.6 Mt (5.1 million st) grading 1.4 g/t (0.042 oz per st) gold. History Although some reports of a pre-Revolution War shaft at the Brewer are in the literature (Lieber, 1856, Nitze and Wilkens, 1897), gold was first produced in earnest from the Brewer Mine in 1828. Production occurred primarily from placer deposits south of the present mine workings. Lieber noted in 1856 that “every branch, gulch, ravine or even declivity of the main hill has been washed and rewashed.”

In mining today, planning is of paramount importance, even more so when one considers that the business margins are reducing, requiring the evaluation of diverse alternatives for the optimal use of scarce resources. Additionally the capital required to approve some projects demands the best planning possible. Modern planning requires that all of the aspects of the business be represented, and not just the planning of the extraction in an isolated form. In order to carry out integrated strategic planning in the mining business one needs to have implemented a culture within the organisation that allows the business to be understood as a interelated system of processes. These processes must be co-ordinated so that they interact properly between each other and so define an integrated plan that optimises the available resources and maximises the benefit to the company. This defined culture should consider the important variables of each activity within the processes, and its’ relevance to the strategic plan. In this sense, this paper shows an example of computer tools used in order to reach the described objectives.

Safety nets have been used selectively in several South African mines over the years. Recently, however, an increased emphasis on mine safety has seen a resurgence of their utilization underground. This renewed interest has, however, also raised questions about the design and performance of these nets and their practical applications underground; these are the subjects of this paper. Generally, mine safety nets are used to protect personnel from falling rock in temporarily supported development ends, tunnels, ASGs and stopes. These diverse applications each require specific net designs, resulting in a wide product range. As a rule, however, mine safety nets need to carry specified static or dynamic loads with the least possible deformation. Because of the application-specific characteristics of mine safety nets, there is no South African national standard for them. Consequently, neither the SABS, nor the CSIR, performs standard tests on these components. In 2007, therefore, SIMRAC made available their Savuka facility for the testing of mine safety nets; the Savuka drop test became the accepted industry test standard for mine safety nets. From late 2007 to mid 2009, Norsenet, in collaboration with SRK Consulting, the designated operators of the site, conducted approximately 200 tests, which formed the core of Norsenet's database of safety net performance under various loading conditions. The test specimens comprised a wide range of net materials and config¬urations; the materials included: high density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, nylon, as well as a blend of polyester and polypropylene used primarily for reinforcement ropes. Net configurations encompassed the following parameters: net type, i.e., knotted nets or sewn nets; net strand type, i.e., braids, twines, or webbing; strand size; mesh size; mesh orientation, i.e., parallel or oblique to the net edge; net edge reinforcement, i.e., knotted, tied, with or without reinforcement ropes; internal reinforcement ropes, i.e., diagonal ropes and/or orthogonal ropes; as well as net attachment options, including loops and chainlinks. From the number of variables listed above, and the limited number of tests available, it can be appreciated that the findings of the test series required careful scrutiny. Nevertheless, principal performance factors clearly emerged: besides the obvious net mesh variables, such as net strand material, strand diameter and mesh size, it was the configuration of the reinforcement ropes and their attachment to the net panel which had the strongest influence on net performance. All the structural elements of a safety net need to work together to transfer the imposed load from the net panel, through the reinforcement ropes, to the net attachment points. In this load transference chain, the weakest link limits the strength of the structure. From this development work, Norsenet has gained valuable expertise to custom-design and manufacture nets to clients' specifications. The examples presented in the paper will also show the experience acquired in the installation of nets underground. Future work will include the establishment of a state-of-the-art net testing facility at Norsenet's factory in Vredenburg.. Nickel laterite deposits are typically formed from tropically weathered mafic-ultramafic complexes. The resulting nickel concentration is found within soil horizons and is mineable with regular dozer units. At the time of mining, digging elevations are needed at selective mining units (SMUs). Moreover, for mine planning, the costs due to dilution and lost ore require mining elevations to be specified. A conditional simulation approach is used to calculate ?optimum? SMU mining elevations. Multiple realizations of the ore base surface are simulated. For a single bottom surface realization, dilution and lost ore costs are calculated over the entire vertical extent of each SMU. The optimum mining elevation is the elevation where the lowest summed cost of ?accepting dilution? and ?wasting ore? occurs. The reported SMU dilution is the cost of mining the volume of waste located below the bottom surface and above the optimum mining elevation and the reported SMU lost ore is the cost of not mining the volume of ore above the bottom surface and below the optimum mining elevation. For all ore bottom surface realizations, optimum SMU mining elevations and their associated dilution and lost ore costs are calculated and compiled to represent production uncertainty.

This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements induced by blasting during the construction of the Istanbul Kadiköy-Kartal metro tunnel which has been driven at a depth of approximately 20-40 m deep under a highly urbanized region of Istanbul city in Turkey. This tunnel is being constructed by a joint venture group. The formation encountered during the construction is classified as hard and strong rock by laboratory and field tests performed by the joint venture group. Within the scope of the study, for the prediction of the peak particle velocity and to determine the slope of the attenuation curves together with the maximum charge per delay for the S4 shaft tunnels and S12 shaft tunnels of this tunnel route, ground vibration components were measured carefully by using four vibration monitors (Instantel Minimate Plus model) during the advancement of the tunnels which required blasting. The particle velocities and frequency values of all blast events are evaluated according to the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) and German DIN 4150 Norms in order to predict, and compare the influence grades to the neighbouring buildings, and structures. Also, data pairs of scaled distance and peak particle velocity obtained from 114 records at S4 shaft tunnels and 79 records at S12 shaft tunnels were analysed statistically. Empirical relationships with correlation at the 95 % confidence interval were established for different rock units (diabase and arkose) and suggested for the test sites in order to estimate particle velocity of the ground vibrations.

The rubber-sleeve core barrel was developed to improve core recovery from unconsolidated sands, where it is most difficult to obtain cores with conventional barrels. The use of a rubber-sleeve core retainer, together with other departures from clsual design, has required a considerable amount of testing to prove its op-erability. Tests run in shallow experimental holes and in drilling wells in the U. S. and Vemzuela have, to a large extent, proved the operation of the barrel. Internal mechanism troubles, such as sandbinding of the sleeve, have been largely overcome. Cores have been recovered from completely unconsolidated sands where conventional coring has almost been abandoned because of poor recovery. In addition to retaining the core until brought to the surface, the barrel gives a "packaged-ar-cut" core, which is coilverzient for handling and transportatiorz. In the initial work, drag blade cutters, roller cutters, and tungsten carbide insert cutters were usrd for cutting unconsolidated sands. Further bit head development is presently being conducted using diamond heads in unconsolidated sands where shaler, hard sands, and limestones are encountered in adjacent formations. Thir work should render the barrel capable of cratting and recovering most types of formations, possibly including broken and frac- tured fornlations. This development is being carried on in cooperation with a diamond bit manufacturer. INTRODUCTIO N For many years the oil industry has needed greater recovery of cores from unconsolidated formations. Conventional equipment has been used to core unconsolidated sands with little success. Specifically, a core barrel was needed which would recover unconsolidated sands in a condition that would give useful reservoir information. DEVELOPMENT OF 'THE RUBBER-SLEEVE CORE BARREL Basic Requirements of Unconsolidated Sand Corino The basic need was defined as a core barrel that would obtain a continuous unconsolidated core with sand grains in place as deposited in the formation. A preliminary survey of coring equipment and search of the literature pointed out the weaknesses of conventional core barrels. Laboratory tests using unconsolidated sand in a metal tube simulated actual sand movement into the core barrel during conventional coring. In conventional barrels the core sometimes crumbles and bridges, or fails under compressive column action, becomes oversize, and wedges against the walls of the inner barrel. The core barrel requirements established by the surveys and preliminary tests are as follows. 1. The core should be held to- gether as it is cut so it cannot crumble and bridge against the walls of the coring tool, care being taken not to permit damage from fluid circulation. 2. The core should be continuously supported as it is cut so it will not have to support itself in compression. 3. The core should be packaged in the barrel to retain an undisturbed condition during the trip out of the well. The packaging should be such that the core can be removed from the barrel and shipped to the core analysis laboratory without physical disturbance or alteration of fluid content by exposure to the atmosphere. Operation of the Rubber-Sleeve Core Barrel The rubber-sleeve core barrel (Fig. 1) meets the basic requirements for the recovery of unconsolidated sands.

This paper sets out to examine the possible relationships between three factors, they are, the rate of growth of world production of minerals, the growth of Australian production and the growth of scientific and engineering knowledge.The first two are quantified, in terms of tonnes and value. The third, an abstract concept "knowledge", requires to be quantified, in terms of manpower.A mathematical model, which has general application, was derived to demonstrate certain axiomatic premises and to define, more precisely, basic concepts related to the philosophy of knowledge.Finally a summary is made of education-cum-industry issues.
