Liquid epoxy and polyurethanes are an excellent choice for whatever the aggressiveness of the substance transported and whatever the harmful outside influences, maximum protection is required. They can be used as coatings on all kind of pipelines varying from the mainline coating to the field joint coating. Compared with traditional systems like dual layer FBE and 3-layer polyolefin there are some benefits to be considered like easiness of repairs, amount of coats, application temperature and film thickness. The interior coating renders the pipe surface so much smoother that considerable savings can be realized in pump stations. Apart from the interior of the pipeline, the industry is faced with new challenges like higher operating temperatures of lines and an emphasis on product benefits in order to save money. Information and communication technology (ICT) is seen as a key source of future productivity improvements in mines. The information technology infrastructure (ITI) necessary to achieve these productivity improvements will come in the form of data integrated from multiple source systems throughout the mining value chain. Two pure approaches are available: supplier-controlled or operations controlled data structures; each strategy has its own advantages and disadvantages. Case studies involving the South African mining industry are used to demonstrate the advantages of using hybrid-controlled data structures. Depending on the level of operational control, new skills are also necessary to be learnt by mining professionals including: information engineering; creating consistent and quality data; and process improvement techniques that use the integrated data for improving the operation.

Conventional dynamic sheetpiling techniques are ill-suited to urban development because of the emission of excessive noise and ground vibrations. Drilled shafts and slurry walls alleviate some of these environmental concerns but add additional problems due to large bulky machines, reliance on dusty concrete plants and urban trucking grief. To solve these problems, pre-fabricated sheetpiles are hydraulically jacked-in by reaction principle using a compact and lightweight press-in machine, a so called the "Silent Piler". Through scientific analysis, definition and systemization of press-in machines and methods, new construction concepts such as the one-step approach, implant structures, functional design and life cycle design have been developed to comply with new basic construction principles.

Until ten years ago, the largest load tests on drilled shafts (bored piles) were about 3,000 tons (27MN). These tests were made with kentledge (large weights, usually concrete blocks) stacked up as a reaction to the applied downward load of a hydraulic jack. In some cases, the jack load is resisted by a load frame held down by piles or anchors connected to the frame. When the test loads exceed 3,000 tons (27MN), these methods become cumbersome expensive and time consuming. The Osterberg (O-cell) test method does not require any reaction load. It has become the only cost effective method for static load testing of high capacity shafts. Over 650 load tests have been performed with this method, 86 of which were over 3,000 tons (27 MN) and 40 over 5,000 tons (44 MN), and the largest test load was 17,000 tons (150 MN). Tests have been made on sands below the water table, shafts ending in rock sockets, and cemented sands and gravels. Test results and details for selected load tests are discussed.

Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

Destructive wave interference has been studied in theory for many years. In application however, limited information can be found. Recently, circumstances have enabled a multidisciplinary team to utilize electronic detonators and seismograph analysis to create destructive wave interference in an underground production blasting application. Springfield Underground, located in Springfield, MO, in conjunction with Orica, ETI, White Industrial Seismology, and the University of Missouri – Rolla has shown the ability to use destructive wave interference in underground blasting to reduce ground vibrations directly above.

"Mineral prospectivity modelling of polymetallic nodule deposits has been completed over the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (CIEEZ) using the GIS based Weights of Evidence modelling technique. Polymetallic nodules, also known as manganese nodules, have been explored as a possible resource for a number of metals including cobalt since the early 1970s. Recent data on the nodule composition and abundance in the CIEEZ has led to a renewed interest in the prospectivity for manganese nodules in the region. The predictive modelling has used the most recently accepted mineral model for polymetallic deep-sea nodule deposition to identify factors that are most likely to map the presence of this type of mineralisation in the CIEEZ.Manganese nodules form on the deep seafloor as concretions formed by concentric layering of iron and manganese hydroxides around a core and they grow at a very slow rate, on the order of millimeters per million years. The available data for the CIEEZ indicates a greater abundance in the area of nodules formed by hydrogenetic processes, which are the result of slow precipitation of metallic components from seawater. The environment in which the nodules are most abundant is at depths between 4,000 m and 6,000 m in areas of low sedimentation rate. Hydrogenous nodules commonly grow on siliceous and pelagic clay sediment, they are less common on other types of sediment."

The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.

When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

Sable Zinc Kabwe Limited ("Sable") is a base metal processing plant, two kilometres south of Kabwe Town in Central Province, Zambia. The region has a rich history in mining and minerals production, being a major lead and zinc producer from the 1900s up to the mid-1990s. In 2006, a copper plant was built at the Sable processing site to treat third-party copper and cobalt oxide ores and concentrates. The oxide leaching plant included whole ore leaching, solvent extraction and production of 8,000 tpa LME Grade A copper cathode. The plant was placed on care and maintenance in 2014, and Glencore Plc ("Glencore") took the opportunity to convert the plant using a minimal budget, to an Albion Process™ plant to treat local refractory copper concentrates unsuitable or uneconomic for smelting. The Albion Process™ plant comprises an M100 IsaMill™ operating in acidic conditions such that raffinate from the downstream process is recycled back to slurry the concentrate delivered to site thus maximising copper tenor in solution and reducing water consumption. The finely ground concentrate feeds an oxidative leaching plant using the existing stainless steel oxide leach reactors converted to Albion Process™ duty by fitting HyperSparge™ supersonic oxygen injectors and gas dispersing agitators. The leached slurry is then directed to the existing solid/liquid separation equipment, and the PLS is then sent to the existing SX/EW plant. The plant also allows for cobalt recovery from the raffinate. The plant was designed based on testwork on regional copper concentrates. The plant was designed to toll treat a range of concentrates, and so the design was flexible With the flexibility of the Albion Process™ being one of its distinct advantages, the plant was ideally suited for tolling regional concentrates. The plant was commissioned and ramped up in six weeks using low-grade Zambian copper concentrate, and produced exclusively LME Grade A copper with over 99% leach recovery in the Albion circuit. INTRODUCTION The Sable Zinc Kabwe Limited ("Sable") process plant is located 2 km south of Kabwe town and 140km north of Lusaka in Central Province, Zambia. In 1902, rich deposits of zinc and lead were discovered with mines and processing plants operating in and around the town until mid-1994. In 2000, the Kabwe Mine tailings dams were sold to Sable, a newly established company, as part of a purchase deal for other plots and facilities. Up until 2004, Sable produced zinc cathodes in an SX/EW plant treating wash plant tailing material. In 2004, Sable was acquired by the South African mining company Metorex Limited ("Metorex"), and in 2006 a copper/cobalt SX/EW plant was built to produce copper cathode from malachite ore supplied from the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2011, Jinchuan Group International Resources Co. Ltd acquired Metorex and Sable was in turn sold to a subsidiary of Glencore Plc ("Glencore").

Diesel engine particulate matter pollution is a matter of concern currently in underground mines worldwide. A number of real-time Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitors have been developed in recent years; two of these by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in the US. One, the D-PDM, is based on an adaption of the successful NIOSH?s Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) unit which is being taken up very successfully for mine respirable dust monitoring. The D-PDM measures all particulate matter within a sub-micron range as classified nominally at 0.8 micrometers by a purpose developed cyclone. The other, the FLIR Airtec, measures the Elemental Carbon (EC) component of DPM by a laser scattering approach. Both instruments have been evaluated underground in robustness and reliability testing in coal mines by the authors. Real time DPM monitors allow greater understanding of the sources and levels of DPM pollution in underground activities. They allow engineering evaluations to determine how conditions can be improved or mining personnel relocated to lower concentration levels. Studies are discussed that examine DPM concentrations from vehicles under varying ventilation conditions. Some of these concern tests undertaken during high activity longwall face moves. They focus on evaluating DPM during the various phases of the face Chock Shield moves. An initiative in some mines has been to limit the number of vehicles in the mining section or panel by the use of a Tag Board or Traffic Controller at the panel travel road entrance to manage exhaust DPM and gases. Diesel tags or tokens are used to control the number of vehicles entering a section or panel and so limit level of pollution. Summation of DPM levels from points monitored throughout a panel demonstrates increasing DPM levels from influence of additional equipment in series within the ventilation circuit. An alternative approach is to invest in underground continuous real-time monitoring of exhaust gases, DPM and section air quantity and integrate this information to determine whether an additional vehicle can enter without exceeding diesel target limit. This optimizes the access of diesel vehicles and replaces the existing manual tag board system. Real-time DPM monitoring allows the industry to pin-point high exposure zones such as those encountered where various vehicles work in areas of constrained or difficult ventilation. Identification of high DPM zones allows efficient modification of mine ventilation, operator positioning and other work practices to reduce underground miners? exposures.

WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. A better location for a cement works could not well have been chosen. On the east side of the island there is a deep channel, which never shows less than 18 ft. of water alongside the company's...

A new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus is presented and described. Results of measurements on Berea sandstone, Solehofen limestone, Bandera sandstone and Bakelite are presented. The measurements were made in a two-hour period at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Results show that the thermoelectric heat pump and tbermistor-controlled electric heater can be used in a steady-state apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of mck. Steady-state is reached within two hours. With Urethane foam insulation, not more than 3 per cent of heat is lost by radial flaw. The apparatus can be used as a comparator or for absolute thermal conductivity determinations. INTRODUCTION Calculations of heat flow through the earth, both for scientific purposes and engineering design, require thermal-conductivity data on rock. However, the high variability of rock often makes handbook thermal-conductivity data of little value. For engineering purposes in particular, it is desirable to have measured data on samples of the rock mass under study. Laboratory methods for measuring thermal conductivity of rock use either time-dependent1-3 or steady - state temperatures .4,5 The time -dependent (transient) techniques give thermal diffusivity from which thermal conductivity can be calculated if the specific heat and density of the sample is known. Most transient techniques require lengthy and involved sample preparation. Also, the accuracy tends to be low. Steady-state techniques are more exact and are the most commonly used. The steady-state methods, however, also have their difficulties. A long time is often required to reach steady state, troubles have been encountered in establishing good thermal contact between the heating and cooling elements and the rock sample, and unaccounted-for heat losses are difficult to prevent. In this paper we present a description of a new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus. With it, measurements have been made in two hours at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Sample preparation is simple and no thermal conductivity standard is needed.6 APPARATUS Our steady-state apparatus is an improvement . over the conduction pile used by Zierfuss and van der vliet4 and Somerton.5 A linear heat flux is established through a conduction pile consisting of the rock sample and a standard material of known thermal conductivity in series. "AustraliaÆs mining sector faces challenges to its competitiveness; operating costs are being adversely affected as a result of volatile commodity prices and growing international market pressures.Diesel fuel-generated power used in typical remote mining projects is generally reliable and quick-to-deploy; however it is ongoing expensive operating cost.Many mines and communities in remote locations source electricity from diesel generation, and often pay over $300/MWh in fuel and carbon only (i.e. excluding CAPEX). These costs are expected to rise over time and are vulnerable to price shock events or supply chain interruptions in international markets.Solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewables can be integrated with existing diesel units to provide a highly reliable power supply. Such renewables now provide a cheaper source of electricity while maintaining the mining industryÆs stringent reliability requirements; some renewables are now cheaper than diesel power ù supplying electricity at approximately $226/MWh.Also, significant funding and concessional rate financing have recently become available to support the development of remote solar-diesel (or solar-wind-diesel) hybrid systems, including: up to $2.2 billion of as-yet uncommitted grants through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is now seeking mining industry partners, up to $10 billion of concessional financing for emerging renewable technologies through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and this commences July 2013, ongoing revenue support through the Renewable Energy Target scheme, and other regional support programs administered by various governments.This paper explores: the business case for renewables - what applications and when to consider them, the potential operating cost savings if solar was integrated, the technical challenges and common pitfalls, and how to overcome them, and the upfront investment costs and whether the site is eligible for Government subsidy programs.CITATION:Chambers, C, 2013. The town of Greenwich, CT, an exclusive suburb of New York City awarded several contracts for the installation of sanitary sewer in the North Mianus section of town. The Valley Road section was the most challenging from a rock excavation standpoint. The cut was up to 14 ft (4.25m), with adjacent utilities [20 in. (500mm) water, 6 in. (150mm) water and 8 in. (200mm) gas] located to within 5 ft. (1.5m) of the proposed sewer trench. Rock types varied but were ultra metamorphic in nature, ranging from quartzites, granite gneiss and various types of migmatities.

Mission Bay is a 300-acre reclaimed site in San Francisco, California, that is currently being redeveloped. Plans include new neighborhoods, parks, a new University of California, San Francisco, research and development campus, a biotechnology campus, and commercial office buildings. New infrastructure is being constructed throughout the site, consisting of utilities, pump stations, and roadways. Previously, Mission Bay was a part of the San Francisco Bay. Reclamation of the shallow bay coincided with the booming development in San Francisco in the 1880s and continued through 1920. Subsurface conditions are extremely variable throughout the site. The stratigraphy generally consists of 5 to 45 feet of fill, up to 140 feet of weak, compressible clay (?Bay Mud?), dense sand, stiff clay, and bedrock of the Franciscan Complex that has been encountered 5 to 210 feet below the ground surface (bgs). Geotechnical issues related to these subsurface conditions include liquefaction, lateral spreading, settlement, and adequate foundation support. This paper presents case studies of the geotechnical aspects of design and construction of several buildings in Mission Bay, highlighting the similarities and variability in the subsurface conditions and the different conclusions and solutions developed for each project. The case studies will include: 1) a building supported on steel H-piles where the depth to bearing varies from about 70 feet bgs in one half of the site to 165 feet bgs in the other half; 2) a building supported on precast, prestressed, concrete piles bearing in a thick, very dense sand layer; 3) a building with over 100 feet of Bay Mud supported on 120- to 180-foot-long PCPS concrete piles driven to bedrock adjacent to buildings supported on steel H-piles driven to bedrock; and 4) sites where auger pressure grouted displacement piles (APGD) and Tubex piles were installed. Case studies will include results of pile driving analyzer (PDA) testing and static pile loads tests, where performed.

Platiniferous horizons such as the Merensky Reef that are mined chiefly for their PGE contents constitute one end member of a continuum of Ni-Cu-PGE sulfide deposits; Ni-(Cu) sulfide deposits in which the PGE may or may not be by-products represent the other end of this continuum. Although it has long been thought that PGE-rich sulfides can only be developed by magma mixing in large magma chambers, new PGE data for the Bushveld Complex suggests an alternate model to account for origin of mineralization in the worldÆs most important Pt producer. Briefly, this model suggests that PGE-rich sulfides were initially deposited at depth below the Bushveld Complex as a result of interaction of a S-undersaturated mantle magma with S-rich crustal rocks. These PGE-rich sulfides were subsequently re-dissolved by a second magma, which introduced the PGE into the Bushveld Complex magma chamber, where the PGE-rich reefs were formed due to cooling of these magmas. If this model is correct, it means that large layered mafic/ultramafic intrusions are not a prerequisite for the formation of economic PGE-rich deposits. Exploration for Merensky Reef-type PGE deposits can be greatly facilitated by documenting variations in the background PGE contents of non-mineralized rocks collected on traverses across mafic/ultramafic intrusions; the mineralized horizons occur at cross-overs in ratios such as Pd/Cu, Pd/Se and Pd/S.

"Abstract: The combination of failure in joints of diaphragm walls and their exposure to water pressure may have far reaching effects ranging from water leakage to the risk of catastrophic loss of stability for the retaining wall and civil structures behind it. Investigations of imperfect joints in diaphragm walls have led to the development and testing of a quality tool to monitor the joint integrity of diaphragm walls during construction. By applying independent mechanical sensors (“joint inspector”) to the steel frame of hydraulic or mechanical grabs, it is now possible to record the surface conditions of exposed primary joints during the construction of secondary panels. This allows for the implementation of corrective action during the construction process should joint quality not indicate a watertight connection to the adjacent panel. The joint inspector, used for different types of stop ends, was tested on a full scale test field at several construction sites. The implementation of this new quality tool drives a new quality standard for deep excavations in inner city areas.General introduction to diaphragm wallsDiaphragm walls are reinforced concrete elements constructed using bentonite slurry to temporarily support an open trench in the ground. They are used in two main fields of application in civil construction, as foundation elements for vertical and horizontal loads (barrettes) and as retaining walls for excavation pits.Particularly for deep excavation pits in inner city areas, diaphragm walls are used as temporary or permanent walls of retaining walls. Alternative retaining wall systems would be secant pile walls, sheet piles or soldier piles, but these have disadvantages in structural strength when compared to diaphragm walls. If the vertical load of existing buildings next to the excavation pit has to be accommodated, the most practical solution can be found using diaphragm walls supported by prestressed anchors, steel struts or slabs."

A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry's paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. Holly (Lake View and Star Ltd., Fimiston, W.A.): There is one phase, which I would like to mention myself, that has been very evident in Kalgoorlie operations.
