A spectrographic method for the determination of 18 impurities in cerium is presented. The carrier distillation technique is utilized to separate the spectra of impurities from the complex spectrum of cerium. Metal samples are ignited to the oxide, mixed with silver chloride carrier containing an internal standard, and excited with a 20-ampere direct-current arc. An additional exposure, made after carrier depletion, provides for the determination of refractory elements. Experiments to determine the best carrier, sample-carrier ratio, electrodes, arc current, exposure conditions, internal standards, and any matrix effect are described. The relative standard deviation of the method at the 20- and 200-part-per-million levels is about 25 and 15 percent, respectively. The average relative error is about 20 percent in the 10- to 1,000-part-per-million concentration range.

Computers and other microprocessor technology lead the world of technological change. Nevertheless, the real advances in the world at large are not necessarily in the computer industry, but in the industries whose economics benefit most by the advances that this computer revolution makes possible. The minerals industry has always been in the forefront of this advance. Technological change in the era preceding the industrial revolution, and the mining industry's part in it, provides an instructive lesson for what is happening today. Strong parallels can be drawn for predicting future advances. With each technological advance allowing more efficient production comes a re-alignment of economics - absolute and relative changes to prices, to quantities demanded, and to other market characteristics. This re-alignment applies not only to the mineral industry, but also to the world at large. Adaptability, rather than technical advancement per se is the key to survival and growth in a changing world. 'Adaptability' as a concept is easy to support. As an operational philosophy it is not so easy to implement. As a goal for planning, it is much harder to quantify. A fixed scenario of a future world may provide helpful guidelines, but a scenario that demands adaptability to an uncertain future world is much less definite. Of course, everyone else in the world is also uncertain about the future, and they are making their plans using different assumptions. This virtually guarantees that our future will turn out different to our expectations. This is in part what Hayek (1945) calls the 'knowledge' problem. Until now, most of the planning and technical research undertaken in the world has ignored this problem. This ignorance is a luxury that we can no longer afford. The paper looks at the history of technological change and highlights the characteristics of successful technological revolutions. 'Adaptability' to unforeseen circumstances is the key to success in this environment. The paper examines the knowledge problem from the perspective of the mineral industry, and suggests a number of directions for maximising the returns from application of computer technology in this important area.

The Lake Balaton is the biggest and for many reasons the most important lake in Hungary. To preserve its healthy nature it is necessary to remove the accumulated mud time to time, similarly to the many living waters, lakes and rivers everywhere. Typical existing technologies (mechanical, hydraulic) require large depositional areas, where the removed slurry and mud is dewatered through very long time. One problem is the non existence of an economical mud thickening technology. Another major problem is that current methods remove the sand fraction with the mud as well. Many times sand has to be complemented from outer sources to endanger the natural balance of the living water. By the financial support of the NKFP 3A/068/2004 Hungarian Research Project our consortium has been looking for the solution to the above mentioned problems. The original ideas of the project were: 1. Sand should be separated and returned to the water by hydrocyclon; 2. New mud thickener should be developed based on the principle that vibrating rods can force settling and packing of mud particles. The work was started by fundamental research with different samples from Lake Balaton and River Bodrog. An automated settling column (45L) has been built for the investigation of the effect of vibrating rods on the settling behavior of suspensions. An optical sensor has been developed by with the settling curve (height of settling slurry as function of time) can be automatically measured. Different vibrating methods and parameters have been tested by the application of a linear motor and mechanical eccentric drive. On the basis of the fundamental research a new thickener, called the rod ? lamella thickener has been developed and an industrial size (50m3/h) mud removing technology has been built. Main parts of the technology are the traditional dredging barge and the thickening technology. The thickening and sand separation technology is tugged by the dredging ship. Its main elements are the homogenization tank, slurry pump, hydrocyclon and the rod ? lamella thickener. In this unit lamellas carry out pre-thickening, then vibrating rods further increase the concentration. The thickened mud is transported out by a screw - of which revolution number is precisely controlled - against a spring supported valve. Paper reports about the design, building, water probe and on-site tests of this mud removing technology. Two new patents had been presented, one is about the rod ? lamella thickener and the other is about the mud removing technology with sand separation.

The design and strength of pillars are important parameters while implementing the room-and-pillar mining method in a limestone mine. The process becomes complex with the presence of the karst voids which are frequent phenomena in a carbonate rock formation. The karst system is a network of cavities that along with an omnipresent fracture network may lead to ground control issues in a limestone mine. The objective of this study is to provide a safe and reliable alternative design for a pillar in a case study mine for safe and efficient ore recovery. This research is a continuation of a previous study aimed at studying the effect of karst void on the strength of the same limestone pillar. It was assessed from the calculated pillar strength and the estimated redistributed stresses that the pillar is capable of countering more stress than is currently imparted on it. Numerical modeling studies combining in situ stress determination and excavation sequencing were used to estimate the existing stresses on the pillar. Different possibilities of modification to existing pillar design were simulated using Distinct-Element Modeling (DEM) to determine a better design. Discrete fracture networks (DFNs) were included to imitate the effect of the presence of discontinuities. An effort is also made to understand the variation of pillar strength with height for karst-affected pillars using two different constitutive models. This study serves as a preliminary investigation in terms of improving the future design of pillars and also while recovering old pillars prone to karst formation.

O estudo de ligas livres de Pb envolvendo o emprego de junções metálicas sob altas temperaturas tem recebido atenção especial, sendo desenvolvidas novas ligas com qualidade e desempenho adequados. Ligas Bi-Ag consistem em alternativas promissoras para a substituição das ligas de solda contendo Pb para tais aplicações, por isso devem ser melhor caracterizadas sob o aspecto de estruturas brutas de fusão. Assim, o presente trabalho objetiva investigar a liga hipoeutética Bi-1,5%Ag (%em peso) solidificada unidirecionalmente sob regime transitório de fluxo de calor. Será analisada a influência dos parâmetros térmicos de solidificação como velocidade de solidificação (VL), taxa de resfriamento (?) gradiente de temperatura (G) na microestrutura e na evolução de dureza da liga citada. Para determinação do perfil de dureza, foram realizados ensaios de dureza Vickers. Para obtenção e caracterização das microestruturas presentes no fundido Bi-1,5%Ag, fez-se o uso da microscopia ótica e da fluorescência de raios-x. Uma estrutura de dendritas facetadas de Bi circundadas pelo eutético Bi-Ag prevaleceu ao longo do lingote Bi-1,5%Ag. Verificou-se um aumento gradativo dos espaçamentos dendríticos primário (?1) e secundário (?2) à medida que a distância da base refrigerada foi aumentada. Em geral, os valores de dureza diminuíram para maiores valores de ?1 e ?2.

[The growing importance of the Sundence (Jurassic) formation an a source of oil, in the Rocky Mountain area has prompted the making of a series of porosity determinations of core samples collected. from the reservoir sands of the Lance Creek oil field, Niobrara. County, Wyo. These analyses are preliminary to a stud of fluid and energy relations in the Basal Sundance reservoir of that field, and the determinations of porosity will be used in subsequent studies requiring, calculations of the volumetric capacity of the reservoir and estimation of the reserves of oil and gas. However, the porosity characteristics an of the Sundance sands in the Lance Creek field are factory that affect the solution of many current practical problems of development and operation. Primarily for that reason but also because it is recognized that porosity values of different oil-production sands are of widespread interest throughout the industry, the results of the initial work have been presented in tabular and graphic form with no attempt to evaluate their significance as they relate to the production history of the field.]

To develop the potential of precast concrete sets as a support medium in underground mines, a three-piece precast concrete drift set was designed for a small opening and tested to destruction in an underground straining frame. Thirty-six tests were made with three sizes of members using three different loading conditions. In addition, 14 members were tested individually in the laboratory. Test results are compared with theoretical calculations. A cost comparison shows the use of concrete sets would be advantageous where conventional wooden timber requires excessive replacement.

Mathematical modelling of scrubbers in development and longwall operations in underground mines produces useful results. Mathematical modelling on the mounting of scrubbers on longwall supports shows that the number of scrubbers and the air quantity through the scrubber are the two important parameters. Increase in both these parameters results in decrease in dust levels at the tail gate. The critical factors are scrubber efficiency and the ratio of the air through the scrubber/total air quantity.Results of parametric studies conducted to establish factors which have dominant influence on the effectiveness of the scrubbers on dust levels and high gas build-up in the scrubber show that for use of scrubbers in development headings, the order of importance of parameters in relation to dust concentration in the scrubber area is: scrubber efficiency, rate of production, specific dust make/tonne, leakage factor, intake dust concentration, recirculation factor and air quantity through the scrubber.The equations developed for mathematical analysis and the detailed results of modelling provide useful data on recirculation of emitted gas in the use ofscrubbers for dust control.

In this research, the thermodynamic study of sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) solution in the presence and absence of H2SO4 and Fe3(SO4)3 was done. Eh-pH and equilibrium distribution diagrams were constructed using Outotec HSC Chemistry Software and the main stable ionic species were determined. Also, the mean activity coefficient and Pitzer model coefficients were evaluated. Effects of system composition, sodium persulfate concentration and temperature were investigated. According to the results, HS2O7 -, HS2O8 -, S5O3 2-, S4O3 2-, S3O3 2-, HS- and NaSO4 - are the main stable species in these three systems. Increasing of sodium persulfate concentration resulted in disappearing of SO4 2- and the appearance of NaSO4 -. The main effect of increasing the temperature from 25 to 75oC, is changing the stability regions of HS2O7 -, NaSO4 -, SO4 2- and S2-. From equilibrium studies, it was concluded that at 25 and 50oC, increasing the persulfate concentration results in a 55-60% decrease for HS2O7 - and an 20- 30% increase for HS2O8 -. At 75oC, HS2O8 - becomes the main species and its percentage decreases with increasing the persulfate concentration. Keywords: Thermodynamic, sodium persulfate, activity coefficient

Blasting is a common activity in mining that can cause significant damage in the remaining rock mass. The most commonly used method for predicting vibrations is the Swedish or Holmberg-Persson approach. It is a simple and fast method that uses empirical formulation to estimate the vibration levels based on the explosive charge weight, distance to the source, and other parameters. However, it has limited accuracy and does not consider the effect of free surfaces or other boundary conditions. On the other hand, recently developed methods as the full-field solution (FFS) can provide more accurate predictions of vibrations due to excitations provoked by cylindrical columns of explosive, but the inclusion of free surfaces in analytical methods is a challenging problem. This paper presents a new approach that includes free surfaces in the FFS to predict vibrations analytically in the near-field. The main obstacle to including free surfaces in the FFS was the belief that the solution was non-decoupleable in P- and SV-waves separately. The Heelan's approach was previously used to decouple them, but it only provides valid radiation patterns in the far-field and does not account for intrinsic attenuation. In this paper, we address this problem successfully, allowing for the inclusion of free surfaces in the FFS.

This report by the Federal Bureau of Mines describes the carbonizing properties of coals from the principal beds in Boone County , W. Va . Results are given for samples of coals from No. 5 Block , Stockton - Lewiston , Coalburg , Winifrede , Chilton , Hernshaw , Cedar Grove , Alma , and No. 2 Gas beds . Boone County coals rank as high -volatile A bituminous . Eighteen of the 21 samples tested contained from 3.3 to 7.9 percent ash and 16 of the samples contained from 0.6 to 0.9 percent sulfur . The postwar demand for insulating material such as mineral wool, in-creased in proportion to the rapid construction of new buildings, placing an enormous burden on the existing mineral-wool industry both in known sources of raw materials and in available plant facilities. In view of the increased demand on the industry, the Bureau of Mines in its Mississippi Valley Experiment Station" Rolla, Mo., undertook an investigation to aid the industry by establishing resources of raw materials through actual laboratory wool-blowing tests and by developing certain methods for evaluating the physical proper-ties of a mineral wool. As material was received from the public, laboratory-evaluation technique had to be developed, the results of which would reflect in the mineral-wool-industry standards. The methods of testing used by the mineral-wool industry, not only would have required a pilot-plant installation capable of producing a large tonnage of mineral wool, but each wool-blowing campaign would have been very expensive and necessitated considerable personnel and equipment. The present laboratory wool-blowing equipment can produce as high as eight wool-blowing campaigns a day. The nature, simplicity, and size of the physical testing equipment permit testing as small a sample of wool as 25 grams and give information as reasonably accurate as in a 40-pound bag of wool. The purpose of this report is to describe the laboratory method of production and the evaluation of the physical properties of small quantities of mineral wool. Considerable work has already been done, and the interest of the public and industry is measured in the number of samples being submitted for testing.

The results of development of technologies for flotation concentration of two types of complex beryllium ores are presented: beryllium-fluorite in apocarbonate metasomatites (Type I) and rare-earthberyllium in feldspar metasomatites (Type II). The researched samples of Type I ores contain a mineral complex that is difficult to separate by fatty acid flotation, including phenakite, bertrandite, fluorite, and carbonate minerals. The ores are characterised by an increased content of fluorite and carbonates. The sample of Type II ore contains such rare-earth minerals as bastnesite and orthite, and a beryllium mineral - cleiophane. The size of individualised grains of cleiophane does not exceed 0.04 mm, which significantly limits the possibility of extracting the mineral into the enrichment concentrates. For the Type I ores, a technological process for the extraction of fluorite using a phosphorus-containing reagent from the class of dialkylphenyl polyethylene glycol esters of phosphoric acid (DAPEGEPhA) has been developed. The use of DAPEGEPhA enables the production of a high-grade fluorite concentrate (95% CaF2). The production of commodity phenakite-bertrandite high-grade (10% BeO) flotation concentrate from the fluorite flotation tailings with using a fatty acid collector is based on binding calcium in the flotation pulp using soda, sodium hydroxide and sodium tripolyphosphate. The use of a combined collector based on fatty acids and DAPEGEPhA made it possible to produce a collective rare-earthberyllium- lithium concentrate with high REE extraction (88%) from the Type II ores. From the early 70?s, ?Centre de Recherche Minérale? (CRM) has conducted and co-ordinated Research and Development activities for the mineralurgical and metallurgical industries. Since 1999, CRM has continued its mandate through COREM which is a consortium of 13 members that uses the benefits and advantages of collaborative pre-competitive industry / university research. In particular, COREM?s ?In-Situ Optimization Group? is involved in the implementation of modern optimization and control tools. The POP Project was launched in order to increase and consolidate the use of modern optimization and control tools and methods for mineralurgical and metallurgical processes. To ensure a successful transfer in the industry, there are a number of essential activities that have to be undertaken. These activities have been identified by COREM?s members and are grouped into three main modules: - R&D Module: Research and Development in universities, research centres and other partners; - Technology Transfer Module: integration of new tools and methods into the POP Software, industrial applications and technical support; - Training Module: education of new engineers in universities, continuing education of plant personnel through on-site workshops and resource networking by specific information exchange tools. This paper outlines the opportunities that led to the definition of the POP Project and describes its main modules. The main features of the POP Software are presented, the first application is described and finally, future developments are discussed.

During the last half century a great amount of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-day to rework old clumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the ninieteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands arid slimes: The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the buddles and round tables on the other.' In the spring of 1977, Revenue Canada announced its intention to proceed in 1978 with a plan to impute a taxable benefit on interest-free and low-interest loans provided to employees. Such loan arrangements are often an important aspect of the compensation packages provided by many companies to their employees. Since the original announcement, there have been many submissions to Revenue Canada opposing this change, and the Finance Minister has now brought down a compromise solution with the introduction of a proposed amendment to the Income Tax Act. The amendment, which would not take effect until the 1979 taxation year, would require an employee, a shareholder or a related person to include a benefit in income measured as the difference between the interest on any such loan computed at bank prime rate and any interest actually paid. Only the amount of such a benefit in excess of $500 in a particular year would be required to be included in income. Of particular interest is the exclusion from these benefit rules of loans up to $50,000 in respect of the purchase of a house on the relocation of an employee and loans provided for the purchase of shares of an employer corporation.

Crocidolite is a well-known causative agent for mesothelioma. However, studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width although this has never been formally confirmed. To date, crocidolite appears to be the only asbestos mineral for which an epidemiological study comparing the risk of mesothelioma in a population exposed to ‘thin’ fibers with another exposed to ‘thick’ fibers of the same species may be carried out. Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite, and African Transvaal crocidolite can also be classified as thick fibers, and there is a paucity of mesotheliomas in populations exposed to them compared to those exposed to thin Cape crocidolite. No thin occurrences of these minerals are known. Our previous study looked at crocidolite from several sources. The present study considers the amphibole anthophyllite found in many places in the world. This mineral, regardless of source, does not show the same variation in fiber width found with crocidolite from different areas. All anthophyllite fibers that have been mined may be classified as thick and populations exposed show very low levels of mesothelioma. We suggest the most likely explanation is related to the fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Lead-zinc production in Canada accounted for 19% of the total value of metals and minerals produced in 1976, says Keith C. Hendrick, president of Noranda Sides Corp. Mine production of recoverable zinc w as 1. 158 million toils of 27.4% of free world production in 1976. Slab zinc pro¬duction was placed at 472,000 tons that year. Canadian mine production of recoverable lead was 247,000 tons or 10.6% of the free world production. Refined lead that year was at 177,000 tons.
