The Benthic Impact Experiment (BIE) is designed to address the effects of sediment redeposition prior to the commencement of commercial mining. The experiment is being conducted in collaboration with Russian scientists from the Yuzhmorgeologiya Association aboard the R/V YUZHMORGEOLOGIYA. Sediment resuspension and subsequent redeposition during manganese-nodule mining is predicted to be one of the primary impacts on benthic communities living on the abyssal seafloor. The redeposition thicknesses that will cause significant faunal mortality in the deep sea are unknown. Sediment redeposition could adversely affect abyssal benthic communities through entombment, or through starvation caused by food dilution and obstructed feeding. This spring NOAA conducted the main portion of the BIE experiment, blanketing the experimental area with varying thicknesses of sediment using the Deep Sea Sediment Resuspension System (DSSRS). The DSSRS was conceived by NOAA scientists, designed and built by Williamson and Associates, and is the critical piece of equipment used to generate the controlled sediment redeposition environment on the 4800-m deep abyssal plane. The DSSRS consists of an 1800-kg sled, 4.8 m long, 2.4 m wide, and 2.2 m high. The sled was towed and powered using an 8,000-m, 26-mm single conductor cable having a 3,000 VAC capacity. As the sled was towed across the bottom, mud was ingested through two rear-facing, 45-cm wide intakes using two 7.6-horsepower pumps, and discharged 10 to 20 m above the bottom through two 20-cm diameter riser hoses. Each pump was instrumented with optical backscatter sensors providing real-time information about the discharge concentration.

A number of recent studies 1-4 suggest that steelmaking expansion might be achieved more economically by a combination of the prereduction furnace and the electric steelmaking furnace rather than through new blast furnace construction. Supergrade concentrates would be the first step in an evolving technology which bypasses the blast furnace and in which the concentrates are first made into pre¬reduced pellets and then used directly in electric steelmaking, Prereduced pellets made from superconcentrates should not only be competitive with scrap, but should be a preferred feed for the electric furnace because of the absence of such residual elements as copper and nickel. Furthermore, geographic areas remote from present steelmaking centers may find the electric furnace to be an economical method of providing local steel requirements. The development of successful methods of producing superconcentrates may also be expected to find application to conventional blast furnace burdens. The need for methods of increasing grade of domestic concentrates will become increasingly urgent in the face of competition from high grade imports. Only a small percentage of domestic iron ore production can qualify as superconcentrates, (Superconcentrates for the purpose of this investigation are limi¬ted to those concentrates which contain a maximum of 2 percent S'02). During the last several years the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines has directed research efforts to develop methods of manufacturing superconcentrates from present standard grade products by cationic flotation, screening, and magnetic separation.

"A field trial was conducted at an underground gold mine to evaluate diesel fuel derived from soybean oil (soy-methyl-esters or “biodiesel”) as an alternative to commercial, low-sulphur, number 2 diesel fuel (D2). A 2.7 m3, 18-ton load-haul-dump (LHD) unit, powered by a naturally aspirated, indirect injection (pre-chamber), 100 kW diesel engine was used as the test vehicle. The LHD was equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst. The LHD operated satisfactorily on the biodiesel fuel. Operators observed a slight decrease in power and an absence of black smoke.Diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations were monitored for a six-week period while the LHD was operated with either the biodiesel fuel or the D2 fuel. DPM concentrations were measured in the mining section’s clean air intake, exhaust and on the LHD. Reduction in DPM emissions was determined from the measured difference in DPM concentrations between the clean air intake and the exhaust. The biodiesel fuel reduced energyspecific DPM emissions approximately 75%, from 3.6 ± 1.8 g/kW-hr to 0.86 ± 0.27 g/kWhr. Time-weighted average DPM exposure, measured near the LHD operator, was reduced from 0.67 ± 0.13 mg/sm3 to 0.28 ± 0.12 mg/sm3, or approximately 58%, when the biodiesel fuel was used. IntroductionDiesel exhaust consists of noxious gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent attention has focussed on the potential carcinogenicity of DPM and the potential health impact on miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended that whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a “potential occupational carcinogen”, and that reductions in workplace exposure would reduce cancer risks (NIOSH, 1988). The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declared that “diesel engine exhaust is probably carcinogenic to humans” (IARC, 1989)."

INTRODUCTION During the nineteenth century, the federal mining law was enacted with the objective of promoting the development of the western United States by providing unrestricted access to vast areas of federal land for mineral exploration. Prior to the advent of comprehensive federal, state and local land use plans, there was little, if any, regulation or restriction of mineral exploration activities. Today, the laissez-faire policies of the past that encouraged mineral exploration have gradually given way to the public's legitimate concerns regarding environmental protection, multiple use and planned land development. As a result, the contemporary prospector confronts a maze of statutes, ordinances and regulations with which he must comply to obtain the requisite approvals and permits before commencing mineral exploration on federal, state or private lands. This presentation will provide a broad overview of the exploration permitting process. The first section of this paper recommends certain general management practices to follow when attempting to obtain exploration permits. The second section presents two hypothetical cases, one involving a drilling program on private property in California and the other involving a drilling program and the removal of a bulk sample for metallurgical tests from federal land in Nevada. The cases are used to discuss jurisdictional issues and application of certain federal, state and county laws and regulations that pertain to mineral exploration. The final section contains a brief analysis of three important recent United States Supreme Court decisions. These decisions address the scope of the federal pre-emption doctrine as it applies to activities conducted on unpatented mining claims and the constitutional limits of permissible state and local land use and zoning regulations. PERMITTING PRACTICES The environmental impacts associated with mineral exploration generally result from the construction of drill sites, roads or trenches. Consequently, after the regulatory authority has considered the issues of permissible land use, the primary emphasis of the permitting process is to address problems related to pre-construction site identification and clearance, and post-construction site reclamation. Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. Few block cave operations have developed extension drives adjacent to existing caves.This paper summarises the lessons learnt from the development of this extension project, with a specific focus on ground control and monitoring.CITATION:Snyman, L, Webster, S and Samosir, J, 2016. This work was done in an attempt to find a simple solution to the problem of simultaneously changing terminal rate and terminal pressure under conditions of unsteady - state flow in porous media . Although the original aim was not realized , a method for encasing a sandstone core that would permit high - pressure ( 200 to 980 psi ) flow tests and the use of electronic equipment to measure pressures at points along the core during unsteady - state gas depletion was found to be feasible . The sandstone core used in this study was from the Bandera formation of Pennsylvanian age , Redfield , Kans . The core , cylindrical in shape with a 3.5 - inch diameter and 6- foot length , had a porosity of 15 percent and a permeability of 9 millidarcys .

"Rock socketed mini-piles are a desirable foundation alternative when design capacity is more than 40 tons and there is limited access. In this case history mini-piles were designed to support between 75 and 200 kips at 12 locations adjacent to a perimeter wall, a party wall and at cast iron column piers. Limited geotechnical information, low overhead clearance, and active building population tested the creativity of the team to get the piles installed. The key geotechnical concern during installation of the mini-piles was the presence of a glacial till layer above the bedrock surface that restricted the seating of the casing into bedrock with a track mounted drill rig. Soil loss during the advancement of the rock socket using an air hammer was excessive and increased the risk of subsidence. Over a three week period the engineer worked with the contractor to modify the design, means, methods, and materials to install piles with adequate load capacity. This paper will present the changes in design and construction methods that were required.INTRODUCTIONRock-socketed mini-piles are a common and desirable deep foundation alternative to support loads more than 40 tons in New York City. Limited vertical clearance, accessibility, vibration control, and load capacity make this pile type attractive; it also does not require a static axial load test when socketed into rock. This added benefit makes this alternative all the more feasible.The installation of a drilled pipe extending to bedrock through a glacial till deposit presented challenges to the contractor and engineers to confirm the casing is seated sufficiently into the rock prior to drilling the rock socket. The loss of soil between the steel pipe and the till/bedrock interface can compromise the performance of the pile and soil loss can result in settlement of the ground surface.This paper presents the design and construction method changes made on one project during the installation of ten limited access rock socketed mini-piles."

"Melt quality is crucial for both continuous and shape casting of light alloys and in order to improve it, removal of excessive inclusions, accumulated impurities and unwanted gases becomes necessary. To address this problem, a new multi-purpose high shear liquid metal treatment technology, based on intensive melt shearing by a rotor/stator unit, has been developed. The device ensures achieving uniform temperature and chemical composition and an efficient dispersion of gas and solid phases in the melt with minimal disturbance of melt surface, and can be used, among other things, for de-gassing and de-ironing of Al-alloy melts. Efficient degassing is achieved by dispersing each argon bubble into many small ones, which significantly increases the overall surface area of the bubbles and the time they remain in the melt capturing hydrogen before reaching the surface. This allows using much lower inert gas flow and mixing times than conventional rotary degassing. When applied to Al-alloy scrap, with accumulated iron, the high shear melt treatment speeds up the nucleation and growth of primary Fe-rich intermetallic particles, allowing a faster removal rate. Therefore it reduces processing times, increasing recycling productivity, and facilitates full metal circulation of secondary Al-alloys.INTRODUCTION Aluminium and magnesium alloys are widely considered in various industrial sectors for the purpose of weight saving (Polmear, 1995). In particular, they are used in the automotive sector, where components are mostly manufactured by high pressure die casting (HPDC) because of its simplicity and relatively low cost, but efficiency and mechanical properties are quite low compared with other processes. To date, the main focus to overcome this problem has been for improving the HPDC machinery (Dahle, 2001) but little attention has been paid to the opportunities of controlling the nature and quality of the molten metal supplied to the die. In this way, liquid metal treatment, which involves a variety of physical and/or chemical processing methods to improve melt quality prior casting, is crucial for both continuous and shape casting products."

CLIMAX ore is an altered and highly silicified granite, about half of the gangue being quartz. Molybdenite is the only mineral recovered and most of it is intimately associated with the quartz in fine veinlets. Other minerals are molybdite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Although the molybdite may be readily extracted by hydrometallurgical methods, its content is too low to make this profitable. The pyrite ranges from 2 to 5 per cent and the chalcopyrite from 0.03 to 0.05 per cent. There is not enough copper to make its recovery attractive and one of the problems is its elimination, and that of pyrite iron, from the final product. On account of the high degree of dissemination of the molybdenite and the necessity of eliminating the iron and copper, fine-grinding followed by flotation is the only known feasible method of concentration. "Geological controls and constraints in space and time define the milieu of the nickel deposits of Southern Africa. Primary, magmatic deposits are of two types, e.g. synvolcanic or syntectonic deposits confined to certain orogenic domains, and those related to intracratonic, post-orogenic magmatism, e.g. the Great Dyke, the Bushveld Complex and the Insizwa intrusion. Epigenetic and supergene deposits form a separate, unrelated group and are of minor economic importance.The metallogenic evolution of syntectonic nickel deposits is particularly well illustrated in the Zimbabwean Province, where the relationships between Archaean greenstone development and nickel mineralization are best illustrated. Volumetrically subordinate, nickel-poor greenstones in the 3500 m.y. old Sebakwian Group are followed by more common komatiite development in the Lower Greenstones (3000 m.y.), and, finally, by very significant komatiites with important nickel mineralization in the 2700 m.y. old Upper Greenstones of the Bulawayan Group. Comparable nickel mineralization is not known in the Raapvaal Province, in spite of ubiquitous komatiitic magmatism of the Onverwacht Group (3500 m.y.) and other greenstone sequences. No komatiitic rocks younger than about 3200 m.y. are known in this region, orogenic activity in the Kaapvaal tectonic province having ceased at about 3100 m.y., whereas the Zimbabwe Province remained tectonically active until at least 2600 m.y.The tectonic environment, host-rock petrology and mode of emplacement, as well as some details of the nickel mineralization, are the parameters employed to classify the Southern African magmatic nickel deposits. A rating of the deposits is introduced that reflects the original resources of the deposit, its average nickel content, its mining history and potential to facilitate ready comparison with and assessment of the nickel deposits listed in the classification, as well as some important nickel deposits worldwide."

"1. INTRODUCTION- WHAT IS P3 OR PPP ?The Public Private Partnership (PPP or 3P) is a project delivery scheme based on the government providing land and/or a concession agreement, and on a private entity providing the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of the project for an extensive duration of time (up to thirty years). At the end of the operation-maintenance period, the project is turned over to the public entity, which fully owns the project at all times. While there are many PPP delivery schemes used around the world, for the present paper, we are going to analyze the impact of the Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Maintain (DBFOM) scheme on the deep foundation specialty subcontractor. There are couple of reasons that the PPP delivery system started to be used and implemented not only by developed nations (e.g. United Kingdom, USA etc.), but also by the International Development Bank for delivering major infrastructure projects in developing nations. From the point of view of government agencies, some of the reasons to use PPP are the following:??The primary use of private capital in an era where borrowing and/or supplemental taxation represents too much of a political risk. Budget deficits and taxation limits are extremely hot topics in every election (national or local) and the level of education of the electorate in this area is making it more and more difficult for politicians to use borrowed funds and additional taxation finance sources for public projects. At the same time, we see an increase in the social expenditures of the government in parallel with a needed increase in expenditures on infrastructure due to aging and neglect.??Bundling the construction risks with the operational and maintenance risks naturally pushes the private entity to increase the level of innovation and communications in the primary phase ( the construction phase) in order to develop future process based upon the innovation and communications utilized in the operation and maintenance phase of the project. This is true if contractual incentives are properly structured because “all revolves around incentives. In a world of ‘incomplete’ contracts, where it is difficult to foresee and contract about uncertain future events, it is important to get the incentive structure right” (Grimsey and Lewis, 2004).??The transfer of very expensive risks such as differing site conditions, schedule, design, construction, maintenance and operation costs from the public authority to the private entity.??The timespan of development and construction of a PPP project is usually shorter than the traditional procurement process (e.g. “ the I-595 P3 provided capacity improvements fifteen years sooner than a conventional plan would have offered. In Maryland, an innovative expansion of the Seagirt Marine Terminal in the Port of Baltimore was completed two years ahead of schedule due to the P3 model. As a result, the Port of Baltimore is only the second port on the US East Coast to have unrestricted access to both a fully functioning 50-foot channel and 50-foot berth.”)"

During recent studies concerning the effects that various surface treatments, surface imperfections, locked-in residual stresses and metallurgical and geometrical notches have upon the mechanical behaviour of metals and, in particular, upon their tension-bending characteristics under impact loads, it became apparent that specially developed methods and samples would be of great assistance in determining the desired data. This paper describes and discusses a number of different types of double-notched tension-bending impact samples which have been considered and examined for this purpose. The types most suitable for exploratory investigations are proposed for application in the study of the _behaviour of metals, their welds, and, in particular, their surfaces, when subjected to various notch-severities, surface imperfections, strain rates, temperatures, and constrained states of stress (i.e. the relations of the three principal stresses). It is expected that the proposed double-notched tension-bending samples and the proposed test methods will also contribute toward further understanding of the cold brittle behaviour and the notch-sensitivities of metals. Diante do cenário macroeconômico internacional, o setor mineral busca soluções inovadoras e sustentáveis para seus processos produtivos. Uma dessas soluções é, sem dúvida, aumentar a recuperação do mineral de interesse presente no rejeito proveniente de operações de beneficiamento de baixa recuperação metalúrgica. A substituição de matérias primas naturais por resíduos abre uma gama de oportunidades para melhorar a gestão de recursos não renováveis, contribuindo significativamente para o desenvolvimento sustentável e competitividade do negócio. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de definir qual a faixa granulométrica, existente na lama, é mais adequada para concentrar e produzir pelotas, considerando a composição química, perda por calcinação, mineralogia e quantidade de elementos deletérios. Para isso, foram utilizadas técnicas de caracterização tecnológica, como: classificação granulométrica (peneiramento a úmido e cyclosizer), fluorescência de raios X, difração de raios X e microscopia óptica. Os resultados do trabalho permitiram identificar uma faixa granulométrica com alto teor de ferro e alto grau de liberação dos minerais de ferro, porém com teores de quartzo acima que um pellet feed comercial. Sendo assim, um determinado tratamento de concentração ou um blend será necessário para adequar quimicamente o material, para posterior obtenção de pelotas com baixo custo.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar a temperabilidade de uma liga Fe-Ni-Cr. Amostras do material foram submetidas a temperaturas de encharque de 800ºC e 1100ºC e resfriadas utilizando salmoura e nitrogênio líquido. Para a caracterização do material, foram realizadas análises de EDS, MEV e DRX para se determinar, respectivamente, a composição química das fases, a microestrutura e a transformação de fases que podem ter ocorrido. Os resultados microestruturais não mostraram evidencias de transformação de fase, mas que houve o surgimento de maclas de deformação associadas à ciclagem térmica. No entanto a difração de raios-x para amostras tratadas a 800ºC, com aparentemente segregação intergranular, evidenciou alguma transformação de fase.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi implementar a célula de atendimento a prioridades dos clientes na ArcelorMittal Tubarão (Cockpit de Atendimento a Clientes), com foco na melhoria dos indicadores relacionados a entrega para clientes e visando reduzir a burocracia e barreiras organizacionais de forma a agilizar a tomada de decisão e consequentemente agilizar o fluxo dos pedidos prioritários na usina, desde a produção de aço até o despacho de produtos. O projeto foi implementado em etapas, com destaque para duas frentes, sendo uma de gestão da mudança, com a implementação do conceito de gestão por processos e em paralelo toda a implementação de infraestrutura sistêmica para suporte ao processo. Seis meses após o inicio do projeto a implementação do conceito de Gestão por Processo, de baixo custo e alto impacto no negócio trouxe uma evolução significativa nos indicadores de atendimento a cliente, com destaque para a consecução de atendimento aos pedidos prioritários que saltou de cerca de 30% para patamares acima dos 90%, assim como o lead time total de atendimento a pedidos que foi reduzido em cerca de 30%.

"The Lorraine property is located in the northern Intermontane Belt, north-central British Columbia. The property is underlain by intrusive rocks of the Duckling Creek Syenite Complex, an Early Jurassic, alkaline phase of the Late Triassic-Early Cretaceous Hogem Batholith. Two significant zones of copper-gold mineralization have been explored to date; the Main zone (historical Upper and Lower deposits) and the recently discovered Extension zone. A combined geological resource was estimated in 1975 for the Main zone deposits at 10 million tonnes averaging 0.7% Cu, and from 0.1 g/t Au to 0.34 g/t Au. The Extension zone, still at an exploration stage, is estimated to be considerably smaller than the Main zone.Copper-gold mineralization at Lorraine Mountain exhibits characteristics suggestive of both magmatic and hydrothermal origins, and may be related to orthomagmatic-hydrothermal fluid flow contemporaneous with magmatism and development of migmatitic fabrics. A depth greater than the depth of formation of classical porphyries may explain many of the variations displayed by mineralization at Lorraine. These characteristics distinguish Lorraine from other members of the alkalic suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Canadian Cordillera.IntroductionThe Lorraine prospect is located in the Omineca Mountains, at the headwaters of Duckling Creek, 56 km northwest of Germansen Landing (Fig. 1). The property is centred at latitude 55°55'N, longitude l25°26'W on NTS mapsheet 93N/14W. The area is typified by mountains of moderate relief, with elevations ranging from 1150 m in the valleys to peaks of 2000 m. Valleys are U-shaped and blanketed by glacial till which give way to steep, talus covered slopes and sharp ridges. Outcrop is generally limited to elevations above 1600 m (Fig. 2)."

The Grand Forks Energy Research Center and Commonwealth Edison of Chicago jointly conducted tests in which 400 tons each of subbituminous coal and lignite were dried in a commercial scale dryer, oil sprayed and cooled, then shipped in open-top rail cars from Pekin, IL to Grand Forks, ND and stockpiled. Cars containing raw coal and dried coal that had not been oil sprayed were also transported for comparative purposes. The tests were conducted in August and November of 1974. The subbituminous coal was dried from 26 to 16 pct moisture and the heating value was upgraded from 8,420 to 9,650 Btu/lb. The lignite was dried from 39 to 22 pct moisture and its heating value was increased from 6,420 to 8,300 Btu/lb. Before loading subbituminous coal was cooled to 115° F and sprayed with oil at a rate of from 2 to 6 gal/ton. Similarly, lignite was cooled to 85° F and oil sprayed at rates of from 1 to 2 gal/ton. Both shipments arrived in Grand Forks with a minimum of difficulty. The subbituminous coal was subjected to 2 inches of rain during transit with no change in average moisture content. The cars containing dried and oil treated coal had less material lost to wind than either cars containing raw or untreated dried coal. With both dried lignite and subbitnminous shipments, a moderate increase in temperature was measured during transit. With the subbituminous shipments, ignition occurred near poorly fitted bottom dump doors, but was limited to a very small area. The dried lignite was shipped when ambient temperatures were below freezing, and frozen coal was noted around the edge of the car. At Grand Forks, the coal was stockpiled using proven techniques and has remained stable to this date.

The application of submerged electric arc furnace smelting techniques to tin concentrates at the Capper Pass tin smelter in England is discussed. Some experimental data from earlier small scale 50 KVA electric smelting testwork on various low and medium grade tin concentrates is presented. Design considerations for the construction of a 3 MVA electric furnace to treat tin concentrates from the East Kemptville mine in Canada are considered, together with necessary precautions peculiar to the construction of a high grade smelter in close proximity to an existing low grade, complex non-ferrous metal smelting operation<. Slag composition modifications to optimise operational smelting conditions for various concentrates treated are discussed, together with refractory selection. The effect of concentrate impurity levels on the permissible degree of recycle to produce a satisfactory metal product is highlighted.
