In order to realize the resource utilization of spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst, a solvent extraction-oxalic acid precipitation process is studied in this paper for efficiently recovering vanadium, nickel, and aluminum from the acid leaching solution of spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst. The process conditions for extracting vanadium with Cyanex 272 and precipitating nickel using oxalic acid as a precipitation agent were explored in detail. The results show that vanadium (IV) in the sulfuric acid medium containing nickel and aluminum was efficiently and selectively extracted by Cyanex 272. After three-stage countercurrent extraction, the extraction efficiency of vanadium was 99.76%, and the co-extraction efficiencies of nickel and aluminum were only 2.47% and 1.87%, respectively. Thermodynamic calculation shows that the extraction of vanadium (IV) from the sulfuric acid medium with Cyanex 272 is an endothermic reaction. The innovative method of oxalic acid precipitation was used to recover nickel from the raffinate, achieving selective extraction of nickel from the solution containing a high concentration of aluminum. The precipitation efficiency of nickel was 98.58%, while that of aluminum was only 0.75% under optimal conditions. The proposed flowsheet for the separation of vanadium, nickel, and aluminum from acid leaching solution may provide a new idea for the comprehensive recovery of valuable metals from spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst.

Controlling and predicting ground movements are essential to the design of shoring systems. The Courthouse Commons tunnel in San Diego, California, included a 56-foot-deep temporary shaft as a launching point for tunneling using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The rectangular shaft was unique in that it was surcharged on one wall by an 11-story building and employed a hybrid support of excavation design. An array of geotechnical instrumentation was used to monitor lateral and vertical movements at the ground surface. Continuous casting of slabs is conducted with two successive steel flows: first from ladle to tundish, then from tundish to mold. There are certain process abnormalities related to ladle, tundish and mold. For example, change of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) is the one encountered during steel flow from tundish to mold. Tundish exchange is the abnormality taking place due to replacement of processed tundish with the new one at rest. Another example is the flow of steel from ladle to tundish without a ladle shroud. In this study, a statistical analysis was conducted related to the process abnormalities in slab casters of a steel plant. Slab surface defects observed in slab yard was incorporated in this analysis.

During 2009 the technical services staff at Barrick Gold Corporation's Australian Business Unit conducted a review of their five underground mines that utilise pastefill as the backfill component for these operations. Of the five mines reviewed three use dry tailings and two use wet tailings plants. The primary aim for these reviews was to determine whether pastefill was the right option to be used, and if not, what where the alternatives. The reviews undertaken focus on several areas including, paste plant operation, reticulation and barricade techniques, the geotechnical requirements for pastefill in regards to the current mining methods, the consideration of alternative methods, capital and operating cost histories compared to initial estimates, and a cost benefit analysis of pastefill against other mining methods. The main benefits from the use of pastefill is increasing the extraction of the resource, reducing or eliminating the need to leave pillars. In some mines the use of pastefill is geotechnically driven, to manage high stress environments or mining induced seismicity. A third benefit of using pastefill in some circumstances is that it reduces dilution, however it is considered that this is not a valid argument for most of the mines reviewed. At two mines no alternative to pastefill was determined, whilst differing extraction and filling strategies were potentially identified at the other three mines. The reviews developed cost benefit curves for those sites that had alternative mining methods to assist in determining whether pastefill is the right option to use for any particular stope. At the grades typically mined in each operation, pastefill was the preferred option to use. In all mines, pastefill was determined to be the best option at this time.

During the last phase of the Circunvalacion Norte project in San Jose, Costa Rica, preliminary designs for an underpass structure of over 16 km (10 miles) considered drilled shafts as an earth retaining system. Since the project’s execution was delayed and close to the deadline, it was necessary to optimize this structure, with the drilled shafts being the most critical aspect. The key element in order to obtain an improved design was characterizing the job site with a specific site study for seismic demand, and the use of advanced numerical modelling, considering soil-structure interaction. The site investigation comprised the CPT, PMT, MASW geophysical tests, deep exploration drilling, and triaxial compression tests. The terrain was modeled using an advanced constitutive model with hardening plasticity calibrated from the triaxial tests. Plaxis software was used to calibrate the seismic model for the terrain and for the dynamic analysis. Two conditions were considered for the retaining structure: free-head and fixed head. A parametric study with drilled shafts of 1.0 m (3.3 ft) and 1.2 m (3.9 ft) in diameter, and center-to-center spacing of 1.3 m (4.3 ft) and 3.0 m (9.8 ft) was conducted in order to obtain an optimized structure. For each condition of the drilled shaft wall, the computed deformations were compared for two spectrum designs: site-specific spectrum and seismic code generic spectrum. Finally, a dynamic analysis was performed to check the performance of the drilled shafts with optimized spacing using a control earthquake. Based upon seismic performance curves, the analysis showed the possibility of greater spacing for the drilled shafts compared to the original design, obtaining a 32% reduction in the total length of the drilled shafts in the project.

The Bureau of Mines conducted mineral investigations of the Peace Rock and Deadwood River roadless areas in Idaho, in 1992. Literature research was done by the Idaho Geological Survey. The study areas contain black sand placers (thorium, columbium, tantalum, titanium, uranium, and rare earth elements), gold, and molybdenum prospects. Except for unrecorded placer gold, there has been no mineral production from the areas. No mineral resources were delineated, but a multi-million tonne molybdenum resource is in the Big Pine Creek area and a 142 million m' black sand deposit is in the Stolle Meadows, Peace Valley, and Deadwood River areas. The Deadwood mine produced zinc, lead, and silver. There are six mining districts in and adjoining the areas; Warm Lake, Deadwood, Garden Valley/Lowman, Banner, Summit Flat, and Grimes Pass. Few claims, mostly placer, were active in the study area in 1992. The study areas are underlain by granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith. Most of the deposits are alluvial accumulations of heavy minerals weathered out of the Idaho batholith. Stockwork and narrow veins along shears account for the base and precious metal concentrations. Eleven prospects were examined. Workings consist of drill holes, pits and adits. Geothermal resources (hot springs) occur mainly along the Middle Fork Payette River; Vulcan Hot Springs is a designated Known Geothermal Resource Area. Sand and gravel resources are of local interest.

Copper mine operations consistently generate a large quantity of tailings after their concentration processing. These tailings are either piled up or stored in a dam, where both alternatives of disposal lead to environmental impacts. The dam copper tailings have a huge potential for by-product production thus improving sustainability and profitability in industrial operations. This paper describes a study aiming at producing a magnetite pellet feed as a by-product from a dam chalcopyrite flotation tailings and generating free magnetite non-magnetic rougher tailings. The chemical assay and mineralogy analysis of dam copper flotation tailings indicate low Fe grade (6.34 wt%), high SiO2 grade (63.14 wt%), low magnetite (3.6 wt%), and high iron silicates content (22.72 wt%). The complex mineralogy of these tailings leads to the need of grinding the rougher magnetite pellet feed as fine as 80% of particles smaller than 20 μm ( P80) aiming at improving magnetite liberation. The proposed process route comprises a scalping screen, low field rougher, and cleaner magnetic separations using a drum magnetic separator (80 kA/m or 1000 Gauss), followed by silicates reverse cationic flotation as a recleaner step. With this process route, it was possible to produce a high-quality magnetite pellet feed reaching 68.00 wt% of Fe, 2.13 wt% of SiO2, 0.51 wt% of Al2O3, and 95.1 wt% of magnetite. The Blaine specific surface area was 2300 cm2/ g, being in the range recommended for pelletizing (1900 up to 3000 cm2/ g). The total mass, Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, and magnetite recoveries were 2.77%, 29.71%, 0.09%, 0.12%, and 73.17%, respectively. Most of the magnetite losses, around 20% of total magnetite fed, occurred in the oversize of the scalping screen. Additionally, it generated non-magnetic rougher tailings with less than 1.0 wt% of magnetite that could be used as by-products and reduced the amount of tailings disposal in a dam. This study contributes toward the sustainability of operation, minimizing tailings disposal.

THE application of aviation to mining and petroleum operations, on the basis of economy and attainment, has become a demonstrated fact. According to Dominion Government records, 30 Canadian companies engaged in air transportation with northland mining camps, carried 13,000 tons of freight in 1935, and in 1936 carried 16,000 tons. In addition, many mining companies used planes to transport prospectors with canoes, outboard motors, gasoline drums and supplies to remote locations, and one company maintained a plane to take radium-bearing ore from its mine on Great Bear Lake nearly 1000 miles south to the rail- way at Waterways, Alberta. Heavy pieces of mining machinery weighing 2 tons are being carried by Ford trimotor planes over the Andes, at an altitude of not less than 15,000 feet. At Bulolo, New Guinea, 17,500 tons of disassembled gold-dredging equipment has been flown over inaccessible terrain, while supplies and building materials for a community of 1000 whites have been transported by airplane. A 3 1/2-ton shaft was carried on one notable trip, while at another time an automobile, 2 tons of rice and a large safe went over the mountains in one plane. Fig. 1 shows an electric generator that was carried by plane to Bulolo. Many large American oil companies operated fleets of planes during 1936, ranging from fast, luxurious air liners for executives to elaborate geological prospecting units, ambulance planes, freight carriers and pipe-line repair crews. According to the U. S. Geological Survey, commercial firms photographed 16,291 square miles during 1935, while the Government compiled from aerial photographs by the Geological Survey in the United States 85,544 square miles. It was found that information could be determined in a fraction of the time required by surface methods. However, sounding a word of caution, a Commonwealth of Australia government report on aerial survey operations had this to say: It is necessary to repeat ad nauseam that aerial photographic survey is in no sense a substitute for geological investigation, though it is a very valuable adjunct thereto, and greatly facilitates and accelerates geological mapping. The Snettisham Peninsula, 30 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska, was studied by the Bureau of Hines to obtain basic information about the size, grade, and metallurgical characteristics of a large basic intrusive containing titaniferous magnetite. The investigation, which was part of a continuing program to determine the potential reserves of iron and titanium ores in Alaska, included transit and magnetometer surveys, followed by diamond core drilling and metallurgical testing. The magnetic attraction of a part of the Snettisharn Peninsula is noted on early navigational charts prepared by the Coast and Geodetic Survey. Reconnaissance examinations by the Geological Survey and a preliminary dip needle survey by the Territorial Department of Mines indicated the general nature of the basic intrusive, but little was known as to the grade and extent of the magnetite mineralization. The detailed survey by the Bureau of Mines proved an area of approximately 390 acres in which generally high magnetic anomalies with exceptionally high localized anomalies occur. Subsequent drilling across B representative section of the deposit yielded core samples, which assayed from 11 percent to over 45 percent total iron. A large sample of core composited to represent the drilled portion of the de-posit assayed 18.9 percent Fe, 2.6 percent Ti02, and 0.29 percent S, 0.32 percent P, and 0.05 percent v.

If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist, and in locating them quickly with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of these jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a similar subject. To make these comparisons easier, the statutory provisions for each State have been grouped under several major topics in outline form. P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. This district consists of underground and surface operations. The East Ertsberg skarn system (EESS) is one of the major orebodies in this district. Subsurface caving of the EESS has been carried out in a systematic series of mining lifts dating back almost 30 years. Present production from the third lift deep ore zone (DOZ), has reached 80 kt/d (88,000 stpd) during 2010, with this rate sustained through 2015. The orebody was proven below the existing caving level, with the next vertical block called the deep mill level zone (DMLZ).

Cutting costs and increasing safety with new ideas is the byword with The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. on the Marquette Range in Michigan. Among the new ideas being tried out are mechanical shaft mucking, prefabricated lagging to replace timber poles, Carset bits in shaft sinking, and rubber tired guide wheels on the ore skips. Plans are being made to stockpile ore with conveyor belts during the winter. In sinking the Mather "B" Shaft a 3/8-yd clamshell-type bucket is used for mucking. The clamshell is opened and closed by means of a verticallymounted hydraulic ram actuated by 5000 psi oil pressure. An Ingersoll Rand-type hoist is used to raise and lower the clamshell. The hoist is controlled by one member of the crew on the floor of the shaft. When the bucket is raised, the men swing it over the muck pile to the desired position and then it is lowered on to the broken rock. The 1400-lb weight of the bucket causes it to sink into the broken rock and it digs as the ram closes the bucket. The hydraulic ram is operated by a man on the lowest shaft steel set who controls a specially designed oil pump which supplies oil pressure. The clamshell is emptied.

Previous to 1915, zinc refining had not become a general practice among the zinc smelters in the United States. Such refining as had been carried on was confined chiefly to remelting very high-leaded zinc, such as third-draw metal from the retort furnaces, and slab dross, and hard spelter from galvanizing pots. In this remelting operation, the lead and iron were settled out and the refined spelter obtained graded fifth class, ie., Prime Western. Owing to the presence of lead in most zinc ores, the bulk of the spelter produced by direct smelting is of this Prime Western grade. Careful selection of ores of low lead content gave purer grades of spelter, z.e., Brass Special and Intermediate; and smelters which could secure ores carrying practically no lead produced high-grade spelter. Thus, in general, the grade of spelter produced by any smelter was predetermined by the purity of the ore it could obtain. The needs of the warring nations of Europe for enormous quantities of cartridge and other high-grade brass resulted in such a demand for the purer grades of spelter that the available supply of lead-free and low-lead ores could not produce the quantity required. Prime Western grades went begging, so to speak, while high grades sold at times from 5 to 15 c. per pound over the Prime Western market. The great demand, coupled with the wide market margin, which permitted the inherent costs and losses, resulted in the conversion of the lower grades into higher grades by processes of refining. These conditions also accentuated the development and size of the electrolytic plants, which were being worked out at the time this increased demand for pure grade of metal occurred. The electrolytic process, where available, produces a higher grade of spelter from impure ores than does the fire process; a large portion of those impurities in the ore, which by the distillation process would be carried into the spelter, are removed in the leaching of the ores and the purification of the solutions. The refining process, adopted at a number of smelters for the purpose of converting low-grade spelter into grades suitable for bras4 was that of redistillation.

A strain of Pseudomonas stutzeri isohted from selenium contaminated surface waters, was found to be effective . in reducing selenate (Se04 2) stoichiometrically to selenite (Se03 2 '), which was further reduced to elementaJ selenium (Se0 ). These reactions were concurrent with the microbial oxidation of lactate. In order to assess quantitatively the amounts of seilenate and selenitein solution, improvements to existing analytical methods (ion exchange chromatography and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry technique) .were made.

INTRODUCTION he most important information required for the engineering design of structures in rock is its inherent rock properties. Without providing adequate parameters on the rock property, high quality of the engineering design cannot be expected. Many laboratory rock testing methods have been developed, but they are mostly for testing intact homogeneous rock without appreciable discontinuities. In reality, the intact rock properties do not represent the behavior of rock masses because rock masses include irregularities such as joints, cracks, interlayers, variations in mineral compositjon, etc. In general the type and intensity of the rock defects may be much more important than the type of rock which will be encountered (Terzaghi, 1977; Bieniawski, 1984). In-situ rock testing can provide better information on rock parameters, but it takes a tremendous amount of effort, time and cost. In recent years, numerical modeling techniques are gaining popularity as a design tool for structures in rock bodies due to the enormous progress in computer technology (Wang, 1985; Kripakov and Melvin, 1983; Park and Ash, 1985), but it is quite dangerous to use numerical techniques without having proper input data. Bieniawski (1984) states as follows: Some design methods such as numerical techniques have outpaced our ability to provide the input data necessary for the application of these methods. In order to provide an adequate amount of input data, an extensive testing program may be required, thus major efforts in time and expenses are commonly spent, In this paper, a new rock testing method, which utilizes the principles of laser holographic interferometry, is introduced. This method requires only a few minutes to measure the modulus of elasticity and quality of a rock core sample, which does not have to be cut or ground. The Poisson's ratio can also be measured in a few minutes from a sliced rock specimen. HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRY Principles of Holographic Interferometry In 1948, Gabor invented holography, which is the technique of reviving three dimensional images using a monochromatic light source. A full demonstration was not made then because a clean monochromatic light source was not available. Later, in the early 19601s, the laser was adopted as a monochromatic and coherent light source (Leith and Upatnieks, 1963). Since then, applications have been made in many different fields ranging from crime prevention to three dimensional television. In this technique, an image is usually recorded by means of constructing a hologram which is a record of the interference pattern formed on a high resolution photographic system as shown in Figure I. A beam splitter divides the laser beam into two beams: (1) an object beam which is expanded while passing through a beam expander and illuminates the object, and (2) a reference beam which is expanded and illuminates the holographic plate. Subsequent to an exposure, the holographic plate is developed and illuminated by the expanded reference beam. The original scene of the object is revived in a three-dimensional image. The entire instrument should be placed on a vibration free environment. The wave fields reflected by the object in two slightly different configurations can be superimposed to form an interference fringe pattern. Thus, it is possible to measure the displacement that took place between the two configurations. This method is called holographic interferometrv. There are two methods of achieving this phenomena. The first is the double exposure method, wherein two exposures of the object are made prior to developing the film. Pebble recycle crushing circuit performance at Telfer has historically fallen significantly short of the design product P80 of 12 mm. An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the current pebble crusher circuit performance, quantify the optimum performance achievable with the existing circuit and examine the impact of pebble crusher performance on the overall grinding circuit throughput. The primary objective of this investigation was to develop an operating strategy that could consistently deliver the finest possible pebble crusher product to maximise the overall plant throughput.The pebble crusher specific energy (Wc) was proposed as a key control variable for pebble crusher operation based on the results of plant survey work. Over the range of pebble crusher specific energies encountered at Telfer, a strong linear relationship was found to exist between Wc and the crusher product size. This direct linear relationship between specific energy and crusher product size remained constant regardless of how the change in specific energy was generated, ie through changes to the crusher closed side setting (CSS), feed rate, liner profile or moisture content. Key findings for the Telfer pebble crushing circuit were: each 0.1 kWh/t change in Wc resulted in a 4.9 per cent to 6.0 per cent change in plant throughput, each 1 mm change in pebble crusher CSS resulted in a 2.2 per cent to 2.6 per cent change in plant throughput, and 0.57 tonne of new feed was displaced for each tonne of crushed pebbles recycled to the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill. The presence of an existing 3000 tonne pebble stockpile between the SAG mill and pebble crushers provides an opportunity to manipulate the feed rate to the pebble crushers independently of the SAG mill pebble production rate. This flexibility, along with excess pebble crushing capacity, enables the pebble crusher specific energy to be maximised the majority of the time. Pebble crusher specific energy has subsequently been incorporated as an online crusher control measure to assist in maximising plant throughput.

Monitoring for signs of elevated spontaneous combustion in the active goaf behind the longwall face is crucial for early intervention of any potential heating incidents. Typically, trigger action response plans (TARPs) are established at the start of longwall mining and often are only reviewed when triggers are activated frequently and become ‘nuisance alarms’, or in the worst case scenario after a heating event. Narrabri Mine has adopted a proactive approach of reviewing the longwall active goaf spontaneous combustion monitoring TARP at the commencement of each longwall block and prior to reaching a known ‘mylonite zone’ of crushed coal, which is associated with increased coal oxidation. The review is based on information recorded from the monitoring data of the previous longwall blocks as well as interpretation of relevant spontaneous combustion propensity results for the coal. This has resulted in the mine implementing a zoned TARP approach for each longwall block covering both the longwall retreat through normal undisturbed coal and the zone where the goaf is influenced by the increased coal oxidation associated with the mylonite coal. The consequence of this approach is that it has removed the issue of having nuisance triggers being activated during mining through a known increased oxidation zone, while maintaining a high awareness of indicators of spontaneous combustion.CITATION:Baxter, H, Claassen, C, Salisbury, O, Brady, M and Beamish, B, 2015. There is a sense of geometallurgy being new; a new methodology for mining project development and improved operational strategy. One of the main challenges that any ænewÆ technology faces is a validation of the value and the need to produce case studies. However, producing case studies can often be problematic particularly given the long cycle from mineral deposit project, through feasibility and construction to stabilised operation of a mine.However, the roots of geometallurgy go back quite some time. Successful practices with geometallurgy can be seen from as early as the 1980s. Many times those practices were not called geometallurgy but something else and, in other cases, what can be seen are various components of the geometallurgical ævalue chainÆ.This paper will analyse a selection of published past practices from a geometallurgical perspective to demonstrate the value realised from the application of this methodology. The paper will then make some general comments on where this history of work in geometallurgy has lead us to and what are the challenges today for the geometallurgical effort.CITATION:S R Williams, 2013. When Dick Robbins asked me to give a keynote address, I felt it might be in order to review some of the practices and techniques used in tunneling and work up to some of the concepts now used to mine and construct tunnels. Needless to say, there have been many changes in tunneling technology and also many changes in the Safety Codes controling them. An example of this latter change was the fact that in 1931, my father excavated the Owyhee Tunnel No.5 with gas locomotives. He was able to do it because there was no natural gas in the rock and the ventilation system was designed to free the tunnel atmosphere from powder and exhaust fumes. Today OSHA rules would never permit gas locomotives underground, although there were no incidents on this particular project. One of my first tunnels, as Project Manager, was the Clear Creek Tunnel for the Bureau of Reclamation. Our method of handling muck was the Conway Muckers. This unit was a valuable improvement to the hand mucking of previous generations. The Conway was also used in our Navajo Project, in New Mexico. Unlike the Clear Creek project, where water was one of our main problems - up to 7,200 gallons per minute, at a pressure of 395 pounds per square inch - in the Navajo Tunnel, we had a mixed face which caused a major problem with our support system. In one of the Navajo Tunnels, there was a major cave-in, when the squeezing shale came in during an attempt to strengthen the support system. Although moving shale was not a constant problem, there were areas where the shale was five to six feet above the spring line.
