This study is an extension of our previous work in the area of coal transportation Its subject is the comparative costing of competing transport erodes. A wide range of costs and aspects of costs are dealt with in terms of engineering - economic analyses of the cost of the components which make up the facility and operating system descriptions of each coal transport mode. The cost comparisons, though analyzed, are not meant to be statements of policy but, rather, an input to decision making. The technical material presented in the succeeding volumes, alone with the earlier work cited above, forms the basis for the analyses. This material may also broaden the general understanding of coal transportation issues and problems. The project is divided into two main sections: (1) lone distance coal transport and (2) gathering and distribution systems. Within each section economic and technological comparisons are made of the available modes. These are used as the basis for comparisons among the modes. Inter-modal compatibility is studied with respect to both mixed trunk line shipment anti with respect to feeder to trunk line and trunk line to distribution systems. The engineering and technological data form the bases for the costing and economic analyses.

(2) Expansion of fractional distillation capacity in the United States. (3) Great expansion in the zinc-base die-casting industry in the United States and abroad. (4) Wide acceptance of heavy galvanizing by the steel industry. (5) Construction of the first commercial wire electroplating plant for putting on heavy coats of pure zinc. (6) Firm establishment and appreciable expansion of the practice of using zinc dust as a reducing agent in the organic chemical industry.

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a process for preparing thorium-magnesium master alloys or pure thorium metal by magnesium reduction of thorium tetrachloride in a semicontinuous reactor. Thorium tetrachloride was prepared in a fluidized-bed reactor by chlorination of thorium oxide or thorium oxalate. Conditions were established for producing a suitable thorium oxide feed for a fluidized-bed reactor. Thorium tetra-chloride was purified by vacuum sublimation and subsequently reduced by magnesium in a semicontinuous reactor to form thorium-magnesium alloys. Relatively pure thorium was produced by removing magnesium from the alloys by vacuum sublimation. Close to 100 percent of the thorium fed into the reactor was recovered either as metal (~93 percent) or as thorium oxide (~7 percent). The oxide can be recycled directly into the process.

A series of economic evaluations of processes for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina from low- grade aluminous materials is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relative processing costs . The two processes considered in this evaluation are concerned with the recovery of alumina from clay through the formation of ammonium alum . In the first process , dehydrated clay is leached with ammonium bisulfate solution ; in the second process , clay is baked with ammonium sulfate and then leached with water containing a small quantity of sulfuric acid . After the alumina is dissolved by either of these methods , the iron is reduced to the ferrous state to avoid crystallization of ferric sulfate with the alum . The recovery of pure alum requires two crystallization steps . The alum crystals are then redissolved and precipitated with ammonia to produce alumina hydrate , which is calcined to a - alumina . These evaluations are based on published work , and the proposed plants are designed for a capacity of 1,000 tons of alumina per day . The estimated operating cost per ton of alumina for the bisulfate leaching process is $ 117.06 , and for the sulfate baking process , $ 109.26 . Using a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 , the estimated fixed capital costs , in the same order , are $ 158 million and $ 146 million . Under current economic conditions , these two processes are not competitive with the Bayer process for the production of alumina from bauxite . Since small improvements will not reduce costs sufficiently to approach competitive costs , future research work with these processes should be confined to areas likely to result in major cost reductions .

The Prieska deposit, mined between 1971 and 1991, is one of the world’s top thirty volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) base metal deposits. The Prieska Copper Mine in the Northern Cape Province was closed by Anglovaal when underground mining had extended to depths which did not allow for safe and economic extraction of the deposit at the time. The mine has a recorded historical production of over 1 Mt of zinc and 430 k tonnes of copper from 46.8 Mt of milled sulphide ore, achieving life-ofmine metal recoveries of 85% for copper and 84% for zinc into high quality concentrates (refer ORN ASX release 15 Nov 2019). Orion Minerals Ltd is currently investigating the feasibility of developing a new mine in the footprint of the historical Prieska Copper Mine, using the extensive remaining infrastructure, with the intent of extracting the unmined zinc-copper mineralisation from the Prieska deposit. This paper reports results on the flowsheet development philosophy on the hypogene ore, and challenges encountered in the process. This study initially failed to replicate historic copper and zinc recoveries employing the historic production flowsheet and reagent conditions unmodified on bench scale, as the copper and zinc were co-floating. Flowsheet modifications were therefore made to improve differential flotation and recovery, resulting in achieving comparable saleable products and recoveries from processing the hypogene ore on bench scale. Flotation variability test work on the hypogene ore focused on the use of the original flotation procedure and reagent suite using a sodium cyanide-zinc sulphate depressant system on the copper circuit, and it generated a saleable copper product of 20-26% Cu grade at 80-86% recovery. The zinc circuit generated a saleable zinc product grading at 48-55% Zn at 80-94% recoveries. Some zinc losses were due to the deportment of some zinc in sauconite. The use of stemming plugs in surface blasting is gaining popularity because of the environmental, technical, and economic advantages. Although previous studies have established the operational effectiveness of different types of stemming plugs, evaluations of the economic and ergonomic impacts are lacking, thereby hindering their application in many mining operations. Consequently, a significant proportion of mining operations end up performing less efficient blasts. We evaluated the effectiveness of three types of stemming plugs by conducting multiple full-scale production blasts. The results show that stemming plugs reduce the need for secondary blasting and increase blast performance. An economicanalysis showed that the incorporation of stemming plugs can reduce blasting costs significantly.

Alpha silicon nitride fibers , Si3N4 , were successfully grown in graphite crucibles by a new method utilizing silicates and silicon ( S in equations below) as sources of silicon and using carbon , aluminum , and silicon as reducing agents (R in equations below ) . The basic reaction mechanism is believed to be generally as follows : 1,300 - 1,500 ° C S + R + N₂ SiO + RO + N₂ › 3Si0 + R + 2N₂ _1,300 - 1,500° C 3RO + Si¸N • ( 1 ) ( 2 ) A build - up of coatings on the solid raw- material particles hindered the evolution of silicon or silicon monoxide vapor and thereby slowed down further formation of silicon nitride fibers . Free oxygen in the crucible caused the formation of amorphous silicon dioxide ( SiO2 ) fibers . This problem was solved by passing , entering , and exiting gases through layers of lump graphite inside the reaction vessel . The silicon nitride fibers grew best around 1,400 ° C. Nitrogen flow rates from 4 to 6 liters per minute were adequate . The fiber widths were generally only a few microns whereas their lengths sometimes reached one - quarter inch or more . Chemical and X- ray analyses indicated that bulk fiber samples were usually 80 to 90 percent Si3N4 . The fibers had good oxidation resistance to about 1,260 ° C. Thermal shock resistance was excellent . Electrical resistance was determined .

In 1947, a Korfmann universal shearing machine was installed in a mine in the Southern field of the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The machine was obtained from Germany by the Bureau of Mines after the close of World War II as a part of a program of experimental work to increase the output and lower the cost of anthracite, which the Bureau of Mines initiated in 1944 when an agreement was made with an anthracite-producing company for use of one of the company's mines as a testing ground for certain mechanical equipment procured or developed by the Bureau. A major objective is to develop a mechanical mining method that will increase the rate of advance and reduce the coat of development of coal gangways in steeply pitching seams. In addition to the time to be saved in driving these openings by machine, it is felt that further economies will be affected by making it possible to concentrate producing sections into smaller compass and that savings will ensue in supervision, maintenance, and time required for mining a section. A higher percentage extraction also is an objective. Test work covered by this report was concentrated on the power characteristics, maneuverability, effectiveness, and general qualities of the Korfmann machine in cutting coal, the cutting tests representing the first use of a machine of this kind in steep-pitch mining in the United States.

The Bureau of Mines studied continuous closed-circuit attrition grinding of a coarse commercial filler-grade kaolin to produce paper-coating-grade clay having a particle size analysis of at least 70 percent minus 2-micron equivalent spherical diameter (esd). The coarse clay, containing about 12 percent minus 2-micron-esd material, was ground in a Bureau-developed 10-inch-diameter attrition grinder in closed circuit with a 5-foot-diameter bowl classifier. In the best test, a finished product containing 82.7 percent minus 2-micron-esd material was obtained when grinding 20 pounds of raw clay per hour at percent solids with a 100-percent circulating load. Energy consumption was about 341 kilowatt-hours per ton of clay feed, or 487 kilowatt-hours per ton of minus 2-micron-esd material produced. Closed-circuit grinding gave some-what greater particle size reduction and lower energy consumption than either batch or continuous open-circuit grinding.

SINCE the discovery of silver at Cobalt, Ontario, in 1903 more than 100,000,000 oz. of silver have been produced b: the mines in the Nipissing district, and there is reason to believe that at least as much more will be produced in the next five years. The estimated value of the aggregate output o ore to the end of 1910 is $48,327,280. The ore yielded 93,977,833, oz. of silver and was mined at a net profit of about $26,000,000. For 1910 the production was 30,558,825 oz. valued at $15,436,894, and yielding a profit of about $9,000',000 The details of the production of the Cobalt district for the years 1904 to 1909, inclusive, are given in Table I. A determinação de características microestruturais como base de controle de qualidade tem demonstrado cada vez mais a sua importância nos processos de aglomeração de minério de ferro. A linha de pesquisa do presente trabalho envolveu o desenvolvimento de técnicas de embutimento de pelotas seccionadas em resina condutora, de desbaste e polimento da superfície das amostras e emprego do microscópio eletrônico de varredura em conjunto com a técnica de Electron Backscattering Difraction. Por meio das técnicas empregadas de microscopia baseadas em parâmetros cristalográficos específicos, foram obtidas ilustrações forescatter e mapas de fases minerais ferríticas, silicatos e óxido de ferro que caracterizam a microestrutura de pelotas tratadas termicamente em forno piloto. O desenvolvimento desta metodologia promove subsídios para estabelecer futuramente uma relação das estruturas observadas em escala microscópica com as propriedades reconhecidas e mapeadas no produto final.

The discovery of porphyries in petroleum by Treibs (17-19) is one of the most significant achievements relating to the origin of petroleum. The presence of these remnants of chlorophyll and hematin in petroleum has immediate practical interest in several aspects of the petroleum industry. Because of their interfacial activities and film-forming tendencies, the metal-porphyrin complexes may be expected to affect the wettability of petroleum-reservoir rock surfaces and influence the flow of fluids in these reservoirs. Also, studies of the relationship of trace elements and porphyrins in petroleum may be expected to yield valuable information on source beds and petroleum migration. Finally, the extreme stability of several metal-porphyrin complexes complicates removal of these metals from some petroleum stocks where they exert deleterious effects on processing and utilization. Metal-porphyrin complexes are commonly associated with the asphaltic residues of crude oils in which they occur (8, 9, 15). However, investigations in this and another laboratory (15) show that small amounts of these complexes often remain in partly refined petroleum products, such as thermally cracked distillates and deasphalted stocks.

In the last decades, authors have been focused in the development of a cyanide-free bath for the electroplating industry of brass due to the risks that involves the use of cyanide and they have been evaluated the electrodialysis as an alternativemethodforthetreatmentoftheeffluentgeneratedinthistypeofindustry because ofthe limitationscaused bythe chemical precipitation. Hence, thepresent paperaimedtodeterminethelimitingcurrentdensityoftheeffluentgeneratedinthe free-cyanide electrodeposition of copper and zinc using EDTA as chelating agent for the treatment of the effluent by electrodialysis. The synthesized solutions were preparedwith copper sulfate andzinc sulfate indifferent conditionsofpH (10–12) and proportion of cupric ions (30%, 50%, 70%). According to the results, the increase of pH and the cupric ions proportion caused an increase in the limiting current density because of the larger amount of anionic species in solution and the consequent difficult to achieve the concentration polarization phenomenon. Blast design involves many engineering constraints and objectives. Some of the more important include the implementation costs, the desired fragmentation and shape of the muckpile. A spreadsheet has been developed to allow blast design options such as burden, spacing, blast hole diameter, decking and explosive type to be varied. As any option is varied the spreadsheet recalculates and graphs the expected implementation costs, fragmentation and muckpile shape in seconds.The spreadsheet extends the philosophy of simple robust fragmentation prediction (Cunningham, 1983) to include similar models for explosive detonation (with respect to explosive type, age, blast hole diameter and density) and muckpile shape (with respect to burden, spacing, charge location and weight). The new empirical models for explosive detonation and muckpile shape prediction have been calibrated successfully for one situation and are now undergoing further field trials.

Mineral and energy resource consumption were continuously reduced by process improvements as chemical understanding was developed and applied. During the past two centuries, technological improvements increased human productivity that was accompanied by social advances and labour saving products; however, these sometimes proliferated to endanger sustainability, e.g., automobiles. In the steel industry, precisely controlled rolling of HSLA steels required little extra mineral consumption but reduced weight and heat-treating energy. Continuous casting of slabs reduced scrap compared to ingots and energy for the homogenizing soaking pit. Al alloy extrusions were improved by retaining the strengthening in the near-surface substructure, of high strength textures and of press quenching that is suitable for direct age hardening. Continuous bar casting of Al-0.65Fe, coupled with rod rolling and followed by wire drawing with only a final recovery anneal, yielded electrical wiring for households to replace less plentiful Cu and later for light-weighting use in autos and aircraft Looking backwards, the 1970 decade saw the first oil crisis and inspired Ottawa to undertake a campaign to develop an energy strategy that would decrease dependence on imported fuels. One significant undertaking under Energy Mines and Resources was the organization of industrial energy conservation, managed by each industry association,that collected detailed current statistics and set the goals for a 2-year campaign. The metal producing industries, as compared by E.C.N. Perryman to about 7.2 exajoules (EJ) for the nation, consumed about 0.8 EJ, being about one third of all heavy industries. While manufacturing consumed 30.2% of total energy, it created 87.3% of total national dollar value. Within the industrial envelope, smelting and refining utilized 28% (0.67 EJ, mining beneficiation 6.7%, 0.16 EJ); there was a significant contribution to exports: 80% of iron ore and 70% of aluminium in 1973. A general concern was that decreases in ore grade would lead to a rise in energy expenditures countering benefits from processing efficiency.

The “Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

On Monday evening, Oct. 28, 1912, the visiting members and guests were informally received by the Local Committee at the Headquarters of the Institute at. the Hotel Statler. The evening was very pleasantly spent in renewing old acquaintances and friendships and in forming new ones. The first session, held Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 1912, in the impressive Assembly-Room of the hotel, was called to order by David T. Croxton, Chairman of the Local Committee. Mr. Croxton introduced the Hon. Newton D. Baker, Mayor of Cleveland, who extended a cordial welcome to the members and guests present. James F. Kemp, President of the Institute, who subsequently presided at the meeting, responded in behalf of the Institute.

The impact of these options on capital and operating costs is assessed, and key technical issues reviewed. The discussion is based on the conventional North American ’pancake’ mill configuration. IntroductionDuring the past decade mill technology has evolved significantly in the following key areas:• improvements in variable speed motors continue with on-going advances in electronics;• ring motors, or gearless drives, are becoming more common in mill sizes 32 ft and larger, with ratings of 10 000 HP and greater;• geared drives have become available up to ratings of 9500 HP per pinion, compared to the earlier 6000 HP guideline;• improvements in speed reducer technology due to the use of carburized and ground precision gearing, make the high speed motor-speed reducer drive more competitive with the direct coupled low speed motor drive;• a unique speed reducer drive is being introduced to this industry which combines ring gear drive pinions with speed reduction. mprovement in gear alignment is claimed, and the overall drive arrangement is more compact than is possible with a conventional speed reducer drive;• the first 38 ft and 40 ft diameter mills have been designed and manufactured; and • application of large multi-shoe bearings have made shell supported mill configurations available for all, including the largest sizes. These designs have flat instead of conical mill shell ends, and have the potential for technical and cost advantages compared to conventional trunnion supported designs.This proliferation of mill design features provides several options to those involved in planning and design of milling plants, and requires more extensive evaluation to optimize mill design features to best suit specific project requirements."
