A miner working in an underground coal mine with diesel equipment is exposed to a wide array of pollutants from the diesel exhaust. These include CO, CO2, NO, NO2, SO2, diesel-exhaust aerosol, and a variety of hydrocarbon compounds. A quantitative definition of the health risk resulting from these exposures remains elusive, but during the past several years, progress has been made in defining the problem. Results from epidemiological studies by Garshick, et al. (1988); animal inhalation studies by Mauderly, et al. (1986); Iwai, et al. (1986); and Brightwell, et al. (1986); and in vitro studies by Lewtas, et al. (1986), have provided sufficient data for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recommend that "whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a 'potential occupational carcinogen,' as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration," NIOSH (1988). NIOSH further stated that "though the excess risk of cancer in diesel-exhaust-exposed workers has not been quantitatively estimated, it is logical to assume that reduction in exposure to diesel exhaust in the workplace would reduce the excess risk."

Coal properties that are associated with wear and damage of grinding equipment during pulverization prior to combustion were investigated. A South African Highveld feed coal and its beneficiated fractions were crushed to <1 >0.25 mm particles for the grindability tests. These particles were milled and screened into <75 μm and >75 μm fractions, which were analysed by different techniques to establish a correlation with the conventional Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI). The <1.5 g.cm-3 float fraction, which contained 93 vol.% (mineral matter free) total -macerals,9% kaolinite, and had the lowest HGI (57) (hardest to grind) was pulverized for 15, 30, 60, and 120 minutes for particle size distribution analysis. This analysis indicated that the content of <75 μm particles increases with increased grinding time. The >1.9 g.cm-3 sink fraction, with the highest HGI (76), 44% kaolinite, and 20 vol.% total macerals, was ground easily to generate the highest proportion of <75 μm particles. Based on higher correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.77–0.91), the ash yield, mineral matter, petrographic composition, and fixed-carbon have significant effects on the HGI. Conversely, the inherent moisture and total sulphur (R2 = 0.48–0.62) have only minor effects on the HGI. Results from this investigation could be implemented in the preparation of a suitable pulverized fuel with little equipment wear, as well as utilizing mineralogical and petrographic compositions. Finally, the effect of microlithotypes and maceral types in South African feed coals on the HGI should be investigated in further pulverization and grindability studies.

There is an ever-increasing need for quality construction materials to provide the necessary housing and transportation facilities required for the protection and movement of people and goods. By the year 2000, requirements for housing in the United States will have doubled due to population growth. Requirements for transportation facilities in this same period will also have increased substantially. Further, all existing facilities for both housing and transportation will require substantial maintenance of one form or another. Aggregate is the basic material of the construction industry. There is some occurrence of aggregate source material in virtually every state of the United States, and in every country in the world. United States reserves of commercially useable aggregate have never been systematically estimated and are probably so vast as to be incalculable.1 However, in many areas its existence is largely negated by inaccessibility. Often it is lodged deeply or intricately in the earth or it is too distant from markets to offer a desirable "return on investment" under the present economic structure. Other factors that prevent its utility are the occurrence of small scattered deposits that individually are too small to justify the necessary capital investment for exploitation and collectively are too widely disseminated; also, the aggregate nay be deficient in certain desired chemical or physical qualitites.1

Enargite, known as one of the major arsenic containing copper minerals, with approximately 19% arsenic, introduces challenges to typical processing options. In most hydrometallurgical processing methods, arsenic remediation occurs after the copper recovery in an autoclave or in a stepwise neutralization process. In this study, the in situ precipitation of scorodite was investigated during an atmospheric leaching process in the presence of carbon-based catalysts and chloride media. The effective parameters of initial ferric addition, temperature, catalyst addition, and oxygen sparging rate were studied and the ferric behaviour was monitored during the scorodite precipitation. The most influential parameters on efficient scorodite precipitation are found to be: initial ferric addition, catalyst to concentrate ratio, and temperature. A 99% scorodite precipitation yield was achieved in this process.

The Bureau of Mines sought to correlate the variation of structure-sensitive superconducting properties with microstructure in selected Cb-Hf alloys and to compare the experimental results with those predicted by the GLAG theory. Alloys in wire and rod form were evaluated by critical temperature, critical current, magnetization, resistivity measurements, and optical and electron microscopy. In the absence of an external magnetic field, the current carrying capacity of columbium was greatly reduced with addition of up to 85 wt pct Hf, but a large increase in Ic occurred for Cb-90 wt pct Hf. Favorable Ic-H behavior was observed in cold-drawn alloys containing 25 and 57 wt pct Hf. Correspondingly, a maximum in Tc occurred at 10-25 and 90 wt pct Hf. Four- or five-hour heat treatment at 600° C resulted in maximum Ic values and maximum hysteresis in magnetization. Dislocation pileup, polygonization, and fine precipitates, responsible for flux pinning, are listed in order of their effectiveness as pinning sites. Sites having an average separation of 1,500 to 3,000 A and a diameter of 1,000 A or less were most effective in influencing Ic-H and M-H behavior. The resistive critical fields increased smoothly to a maximum of 80 k0e between 60 and 65 wt pct Hf. Highfield, mixed state, reversible paramagnetism was observed in some alloys; however, the GLAG theory was in good agreement with experimental results for the majority of the composition range studied.

"Hollow bar tiebacks can offer an economical alternative to conventional solid bar and strand tieback systems for use in temporary excavation support construction. However, the limitations associated with the installation of hollow bar tiebacks require special attention during design, construction and load testing to verify conformance with conventional performance and proof testing criteria (PTI, 2014). In particular, providing a reliable free length is complicated by the 10-foot (3-m) -long, segmental, couplingto- coupling nature of the free length sheath in the hollow bar system, and addressing the fully grouted annulus of the bond zone and the free length zone at the end of installation are key concerns. In addition, it is often more convenient to install a greater number of more closely spaced, lower capacity tiebacks with the hollow bar system, compared to conventional tiebacks. This paper examines how these issues were addressed for a project involving a 60-foot (18-m) -deep sheet pile excavation through a highway embankment and a 70-foot-deep sheet pile and soldier pile and lagging excavation through a railroad embankment, both supported by a hybrid system of hollow bar tiebacks and hollow bar soil nails. The project involved approximately 300 tiebacks and 400 soil nails.INTRODUCTIONEngineers Construction, Inc. (ECI), constructed a pair of 32-foot (9.8-m) -wide (clear span), 30-foot (9- m) -high (21 feet (6.4 m) above the stream bed), cast-in-place concrete arch culverts as a design-build project for the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) in East Ryegate, Vermont. The new culverts replaced an existing 8-foot (2.4-m) -wide by 6-foot (1.8-m) -high cast-in-place concrete culvert under US Route 5 (RTE5), and twin, 2-foot (0.6-m) -wide by 5-foot (1.5-m) -high granite block culverts under the Washington County Railroad (WACR) alignment. The culverts convey Manchester Brook eastward, through the embankments for RTE5 and the WACR, on its way to the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River is located approximately 100 feet (30 m) east of the WACR embankment. The existing structures were undersized and backed up water behind the embankments during high flow events; and often trapped debris that flowed down the brook and became clogged. The existing culverts also had cracks and openings that have resulted in the loss of ground into the culverts and the formation of sinkholes in the sides of the embankments. Moreover, the reason for the large cross-sectional dimensions of the culverts was to make them of sufficient size and openness to encourage the migration of fish up the stream to spawn. The culvert through the RTE5 embankment is 144 feet (44 m) long, and the culvert through the WACR embankment is 128 feet (39 m) long, with a 57-foot (17.4-m) -long by 32–foot (9.8- m) -wide by 17-foot (5.2-m) -deep 10 feet (3 m) deep above the stream bed) open channel section between the two culverts. Neste sentido, a qualidade da soldagem torna-se um elemento fundamental para a garantia da integridade estrutural da embarcação. Neste trabalho são apresentados os resultados da análise da influência de diferentes fatores na qualidade da soldagem por extrusão de chapas de polietileno de alta densidade. Os fatores analisados envolveram o aporte de calor, a preparação do chanfro, a velocidade de soldagem e a pigmentação do fio de solda. A influência de tais fatores na qualidade da solda foi avaliada tendo como referência os resultados de ensaios de flexão em corpos de prova.

An economic and technical evaluation of a proposed process to recover alumina by leaching calcined kaolinitic clay with sulfurous acid is presented in this Bureau of Mines report. After the insoluble portion of the clay has been removed by leaching, monobasic aluminum sulfite is precipitated from the pregnant leach solution by partial hydrothermal decomposition. Further heating completes the decomposition to an impure alumina hydrate. This intermediate is purified in a modified Bayer process, which includes dissolving the alumina hydrate in a caustic solution at high temperature and pressure, then decreasing the temperature and pressure to precipitate alumina trihydrate. Calcining the trihydrate produces the alumina product. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina per day, 350 d/yr. The estimated operating cost is approximately $475 per ton of alumina. This is substantially higher than a comparable estimated operating cost for the Bayer process of $250 per ton of alumina. The proposed process does not appear economically attractive, even as a method to modify a current Bayer processing plant to use a kaolinitic clay feed. High capital costs and high energy requirements make the process prohibitively expensive.

Changing haul requirements once again create the need for more flexible mechanical drive power transmission equipment. The new equip- ment however is designed to provide extended life between overhauls as compared with previous mechanical transmissions.

The work described was carried out during 1917 and 1918 at the testing laboratory of Watertown Arsenal at the instigation of the Nitrate Division and later with the concurrence of the Cannon Section of the Ordnance Department, U. 8. A. The experiments follow three principal lines of work: First, the effect of nitrogen under pressure on steel containers of various compositions at a red heat; second, the effect of decomposing ammonia on various alloy steels, iron, and non-ferrous alloys; third, a new theory of the erosion of guns in respect to the effect of nitrogen in steel. Part I In the Haber process for the manufacture of ammonia from its elcnlents, it is necessary to have nitrogen and hydrogen of 1500 lb. per sq. in. (105.5 kg. per sq. cm.) at a temperature of 500 to 600&apos; C. The steel containers for these gases gave trouble by failing without apparent cause. When the General Chemical Co. began to develop its method for the production of ammonia, it experienced the same difficulty and, knowing that the Haber process had solved the difficulty by the use of alloy steels, it made several small steel bottles of different compositions and kept them filled with these gases at this pressure and temperature until they failed. The time of service varied from a few days, for the plain steel casting, to two years for a chrome-vanadium forging. Four of these steel bottles were sent to this laboratory for investigation; they were a plain carbon-steel forging, a nickel-stee1 forging, a chrome-vanadium steel forging, and a chrome-steel forging. The time of service was as follows: plain carbon steel, 4 mo.; nickel steel, 6 mo.; chrome-vanadium steel, over 2 yr.; chrome steel, 4 mo. When these containers were cut open and the cross-section surface polished, they showed an inside zone with a different luster from the rest of the metal. Upon etching, this zone was almost unaffected while the rest of the steel etched normally.

A plataforma permite o modelamento matemático e o estudo analítico e/ou numérico de processos utilizando recursos disponíveis de cloud computing e a apresentação dos resultados e geração de relatórios através de uma interface web. Através do desenvolvimento cooperativo de novos procedimentos para análise de dados, modelos de instrumentos e melhorias operacionais do sistema pretende-se que o mesmo aproxime-se cada vez mais de um LIMS totalmente funcional e que tenha maior aderência à norma ISO/IEC 17025.

This paper proceeds from the premise that process improvement is a key part of the mineral engineer’s role, and one in which he/she can make a significant contribution to shareholder value. It presents four tools to help with process improvement projects. Two are designed for process monitoring, to determine as soon as possible whether there has been a true change in performance: the cumulative sum (cusum) control chart plot with V-mask, and the control chart using a process model. The other two are used for process optimisation: simplex self-directing evolutionary operation (SSDEVOP), and a response surface model developed using a central composite rotatable experimental design (CCRD). These methods are robust, have a rigorous theoretical basis and are easy to implement. They also promote project continuity which increases the chances of success, particularly in fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) operations. Variants are used in other industries, but they are rarely if ever applied in mineral processing to-day for reasons which are unclear. The paper gives examples of the application of each method in concentrators which demonstrate that they have the potential to be useful additions to the mineral engineer’s professional toolbox.CITATION:Napier-Munn, T J, 2014. A concentração gravítica corresponde a uma das mais antigas e importantes formas de processamento mineral, sendo utilizada para beneficiar uma grande variedade de minérios. Neste contexto, a melhor maneira de investigar e prever resultados de processos gravíticos é a chamada “curva de lavabilidade”. Estas curvas apresentam a distribuição das partículas de um dado um material segundo as suas densidades e são construídas a partir de dados experimentais obtidos nos denominados testes de flutua-afunda. Para a realização destes testes são utilizados líquidos com diferentes densidades, os quais correspondem a substâncias muito tóxicas, voláteis, de difícil manuseio e, na maioria dos casos, muito caras. Além disto, por não existirem líquidos com densidades muito elevadas, os mesmos não podem ser usados no fracionamento de sulfetos ou óxidos metálicos, o que restringe o uso das curvas de lavabilidade a materiais leves. Pensando nisto, procedeu-se ao desenvolvimento do presente trabalho, cujo objetivo é apresentar uma nova metodologia para a construção das curvas de lavabilidade a partir da análise de imagens digitais. Com esta metodologia será possível construir curvas de lavabilidade de uma maneira mais rápida e segura, além de tornar possível a aplicação desta ferramenta para minérios que possuam partículas com densidades mais elevadas.

The development in the perfection of mine-surveying instruments has been by no means rapid, as it has depended somewhat on the details of construction borrowed from astronomical and geodetic theodolites, largely on the restrictions laid down by mining companies and the prejudices of mine managers themselves, but more than all on the methods used in conducting surveys and the importance attached thereto. Mine-surveying, in some form or other, has been practiced from the very earliest times; but it has never kept pace with the other branches of surveying, or even with the art of mining itself, and cannot be recognized as an exact science until shortly before the beginning of this century. The works of Hero of Alexandria, who lived in the second century B.C., are still extant, and contain descriptions of a rectangular sighting-instrument, which he invented and called a diopter. His improvement upon this simple construction, which possibly he devised for use in the Greek mines for rough leveling-purposes and for laying out any angle, must be considered, says Hübner," as the origin of the highly perfected theodolite of to-day. Whether this instrument came into general use during the first centuries of the Christian era, is not recorded; in fact, no writer undertakes to tell how mine-surveying was conducted until 1556, in which year Agricola expounds the principles of mining and metallurgy in his De Re Metallica, devoting the entire fifth chapter to the practice of mine-surveying (see Fig. 1). In a laboratory study of grinding and classification&apos; of silica sand, a satisfactory means of producing the medium-fine specification sand desired by producers of flint-glass containers was developed. The best procedure consisted of ball-mill grinding and double classification, which gave a properly sized sand containing less iron than the feed.

"For reducing the dust content in flue gas during copper smelting in the Ausmelt, technologies and mechanism of strengthening the pelletizing of copper concentrate were studied. The results show that adding bentonite, organic binder or composite binder can effectively enhance the strength of green pellet and reduce the rate of shedding powder in drying process, and composite binder works best. When adding 1 % of composite binder, the drop strength of green pellet increased from 1.9 times/P to 4.5 times/P, the rate of damage dropping from 2 m reduced from 50.12% to 13.08% and the rate of shedding powder reduced from 60.28% to 25.13% at drying temperature of 400111. In addition, the mechanism of binder absorbed in the surface of mineral was investigated by infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that composite binder absorbed in the surface of copper concentrate was in the form of chemisorptions, which made hydrophilic enhanced, while bentonite absorbed in the surface of copper concentrate was physisorption.IntroductionWith the technologies of copper smelting developing, the equipment of copper smelting steps into a large-scale and efficient level in recent years. As Ausmelt smelting is characterized by being efficient, environmentally-friendly and energy-saving, it is generally recognized by the enterprises of copper smelting [l]. The process of Ausmelt smelting starts with materials mixing, and then pelletizing. From this point onwards, pelletized balls are charged to the top of the furnace, undergoing drying and smelting reaction[2]. Since copper concentrate is fine-grained, directly adding into smelting furnace can make it blown out of the furnace together with the airflow upwards, rendering flue gas high in flue dust, which can cause the loss of concentrate greatly, and make smelting environment poor as well. The concentrate transported into the furnace and smelted after disc balling is conducive to improve the capacity of melting furnace during copper concentrate smelting, reduce the powder shedding rate and improve enterprise benefits."

Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

Lime addition to acid mine drainage (AMD) leads to precipitation, predominantly of metal hydroxides and calcium sulfate, and is the benchmark for remediation by precipitation. Geo2 Limited of Melbourne, Australia has developed and patented a novel alternative precipitation scheme based on the formation of mixed valency, M(I1)-M(III), hydroxide sulfate salts. When the composition of AMD is appropriate, the Green Precipitate Process provides a useful and more effective alternative to conventional liming. The characteristics and utility of the Green Precipitate Process are described in terms of the underlying chemistry, and a case study where the Green Precipitate process outperforms conventional liming. A mobile pilot pipe reactor rig which was built by Geo2 to demonstrate the process, and used successfully in both Australia and the United States, is described.
