Buying centres are the first point of contact that determines whether ore will be considered as having sufficient provenance to be considered ethically sourced. The information that needs to be captured on the blockchain platform ranges from reports on in-loco inspections and audits of mining and purchase sites. This will guide passive and active monitoring of mining activities, trade-offs for identification systems, including biometrics for the registration of artisanal sellers, scrutiny on the selection of security measures and companies for buyer centres and stockpiling warehouses, evaluation of active and passive infrastructure security, and remote monitoring applications. Assistance with selection and training in geochemical testing instruments to determine the grade of ore material or concentrates and sorting, on-the-ground investigations, guidance on monitoring methods from stockpile and packing area along the transport route to the final destination are required.

Two discrete types of microstructure me seen in cermets formed by the reaction: 4Al (liquid) + 3SiO2 (glass) — 2A12O3(a) + 3Si (solid) Relatively coarse-grained macroscopically isotropic specimens resulted from reaction with aluminum containing appreciable silicon, while macroscopically anisotropic fine-grained specimens were formed by reaction with aluminum low in silicon. Optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction suggest that the anisotropic material contains gross areas in which submicroscopic grains of a A12O3 are oriented along radial lines drawn from the specimen surface. These lines are presumed to originate at defects in an otherwise protecting surface layer. A unique cermet is formed by the reduction of high-silica glass by molten aluminum according to the reaction: 4A1 (liquid) + 3SiO2 (glass) — 2A12O3 (a) + 3Si (solid) The free-energy change accompanying this reaction is -150 kcal at 800°C; the volume change (volume of A12O3 and silicon minus volume of SiO2) is +6 pct. The reaction product, however, contains aluminum metal as well as Al2O3 and silicon because some of the product silicon is dissolved in the aluminum bath and is replaced by aluminum in the structure. The product is a hard gray solid that retains the external dimensions of the original silica article. The system has been studied in the past, the investigations culminating in patents to George1, 2 and Saw-chuk., The former emphasize that this reaction is but one of a relatively broad class of such systems, while the latter demonstrates that a marked improvement in the gross physical properties of the cermet can be obtained by dissolving appreciable quantities of silicon in the aluminum reactant. The system has also been studied by workers at Rolls Royce Ltd.,4-6 who have patented the addition of small quantities of arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or phosphorus to the reactant bath to SO impede the reaction that glass fibers may be metal-coated by immersion in molten aluminum.

Progress is reported on capturing the effects of gangue chemistry in the context of a comprehensive stockpile heap leach model for leaching copper sulfide ores, employing leading edge computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. The stockpile is a complex multi-phase process, comprising of a solid porous media, with complex fluid flow, gas and liquid phases, competing solid-liquid reactions, dissolution of minerals and transport through the heap. The model accounts for many of the challenging physical and chemical features of the heap, including transport and reactions kinetics for the important copper and iron sulfide minerals, ferrous oxidation, bacterial effects, thermal energy, acid and sulfate balances. In this contribution, the model has been extended to incorporate dissolution of various species from gangue reactions and precipitation of hydronium and potassium jarosite, ferric hydroxide, alunite, and gypsum. The effect of aeration on the simulation of a copper sulfide heap leach is provided as an example.

The Federal Bureau of Mines developed a modification in the conventional Kroll process for preparing high - purity hafnium metal . This modification involved the partial replacement of magnesium by sodium in the batch reduction of purified hafnium tetrachloride to sponge metal . The raw tetrachloride was purified either by thermal degassing of the volatile contaminants to the atmosphere or by fused- salt treatment . In the fused- salt treatment , the tetrachloride was contacted with molten alkali chlorides to remove the impurities . The reaction byproducts were removed from the metal by heat treatment in an evacuated furnace . The metal sponge was consolidated by melting into buttons or ingots , which were analyzed for impurities . The purity of the metal prepared by the modified process is superior to that of the metal produced by the conventional method . The hafnium metal was comparable to crystal - bar hafnium except for the oxygen content , despite the abnormally high impurity concentrations in the raw tetrachloride . Several ingots were successfully cold - rolled to sheet .

Mine-wide (MW) microseismic systems use widely spaced transducers to determine the source location and parameters of stronger microseismic events, while high frequency (HF) systems use fewer transducers to monitor local areas for the weaker events that can precede stronger events. Previous monitoring at the Creighton Mine indicated that an HF transducer located 120 m away from an active stope recorded two types of activity in response to production blasting: the first occurring at the same time as the production blasts and associated with the passage of the direct seismic waves from the blast through the local area, and the second occurring several hours later and associated with the arrival of a slower moving stress change through the rock mass (which was identified by the mine’s MW system). Interpretations of locally increased stress levels, based on analysis of the recorded HF events, correlated with the nearby occurrence of two strong seismic events. These results were applied to a similar monitoring trail at the Kidd Creek Mine where the transient stress changes induced by several development blasts were monitored. It was observed that increases in HF activity corresponded with the occurrence of MW events near the transducer location, and that fewer HF events were recorded the longer this occurred after the blast. Local geological features appeared to influence the number and occurrence of both HF and MW events.

For the pillars, which have been standing long after mining, the stability depends much on the weathering action in the presence of mine moisture. From the field observations, it has been found that this weathering action becomes critical in terms of pillar stability if the coal seam contains partings or binders in it. The weathering action degrades both the partings and coal in terms of their load bearing capacity as the mine moisture penetrates into them. This paper investigates the effect of weathering action on coal and partings in the laboratory. In the field, the strength profile in the coal and the partings and the effect of time (in terms of the pillar age) on them have been studied by using borehole penetrometer. In this paper, an attempt has also been made to establish formulae for time dependent strength of coal and partings.

Soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs) are proving to be the future of sustainable and environmental-friendly mining. These expansive chemicals become critical when there is a need to break rock close to communities, environmentally sensitive areas, and critical structures and infrastructure. Unlike explosives, the SCDAs do not generate air-blast, ground vibrations, flyrock, noise, dust, and noxious fumes, which can negatively affect the environment, surrounding communities, sensitive areas, and critical structures and infrastructure. Over the years, several types of SCDA products have been used successfully in the civil and construction industries for the demolition of old and dilapidated buildings near vibrations and environmentally sensitive areas. They have also been used to fragment boulders in the mining and construction industries. However, to date, no study has investigated the applications of soundless chemical demolition on a large-scale in opencast mines. Therefore, this study evaluated whether soundless chemical demolition can break large volumes of in situ rock. This was done by conducting five trials using Nex-Pand soundless chemical demolition agents in four different surface mining sites. Trial 1 was unsuccessful as it was unable to break the rock due to the large confinement between the drilled holes and the use of a hole diameter that was 182% larger than recommended. Trial 2 was a success as it was able to fracture the rock with a crack width that reached 110 mm after 72 hours. Trial 3 generated cracks at the biggest hole diameter of 102 mm. The cracks developed and ceased to increase after 96 hours at a crack width of 100 mm. Trial 4 achieved the smallest crack width due to a very competent rock compared to the other sites. Trial 5 generated cracks at a slower rate than other trials because of the use of Nex-Pand powder at lower ambient temperatures than recommended. These trials proved that soundless chemical demolition agents can replace explosives in areas closer to sensitive infrastructure and communities. This will ultimately enable mines to unlock value and access deposits in these areas.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.The occurrence of air blasts is one of the principal mining hazards in block caving operations between the time of first undercutting and breakthrough of the cave to surface. As such, it needs to be managed continuously, and risk assessments need to be reviewed on a regular basis for applicability to changing conditions. Unfortunately, there is little literature on how to practically approach air blast risk assessments in a way that can be incorporated in the day-to-day operation of a mine. Previous methods of assessing air blast risk were tedious and results were often unrepeatable.With the extension of the E48 Lift 1 extraction level, it was necessary to assess the air blast risk for the extension drives and develop operational guidelines for production from the extension. A review of the methodology for assessing air blast risks revealed substantial improvement opportunities.This paper outlines the principles used for air blast risk assessments at Northparkes Mines and the methodology employed to achieve efficient, repeatable and auditable results.CITATION:Vejrazka, C, 2016. INTRODUCTION The LG-2 project is one element of the La Grande Complex, an integrated development of hydro-electric potential being constructed in north-western Quebec by the James Bay Energy Corporation. The project is located on the La Grande River about 65 miles east of Fort George on the James Bay coast and 600 miles north of Montreal. It comprises a 525 foot high dam, 81,000 feet of dykes, spillway and river diversion works and a 16 unit underground powerhouse that will have an installed capacity of 5,328 MW. The power installations at LG-2 represent approximately half of the total potential for the complex. When completed in 1982, LG-2 will rank as the largest underground powerhouse in the world. Studies and site explorations for the project were begun in 1971, construction commenced in 1973 and the roll date for the first machine is scheduled for February, 1980. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT OF POWER INSTALLATIONS As shown in Figure 1, the power installations are located on the south bank of the river about 4 miles downstream from the main dam. Os materiais poliméricos são sensíveis a radiação ultravioleta, acarretando mudanças em suas propriedades. Sob esta perspectiva, o presente estudo expôs o polietileno de baixa densidade (PEBD) a radiação ultravioleta por 150 e 300 horas. A avaliação físico-química e a caracterização mecânica foram realizadas para verificar as mudanças macromoleculares produzidas por tal radiação e confirmadas por exame visual. Diante dos resultados, confirmou-se a ocorrência de degradação, através da presença de ruptura de cadeias, além da produção de reticulação, e um sutil decréscimo da cristalinidade. O ensaio de tração confirmou a fragilização produzida pela radiação. O desempenho balístico das placas fixadas por adesivo a base de etilcianoacrilato produziram delaminação, ao contrário do observado nas placas fixadas por silicone.

This paper discusses the background, requirements, need and content of plans for management of drinking water self-supplied to mining-related operations, including construction camps, especially in remote areas of Western Australia. The paper discusses the importance of cooperation between regulators, the mine site operator and the consultant in preparing a plan fully compliant with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines to protect the quality and safety of drinking water supplied to mine sites. The paper outlines some of the issues that need to be addressed in preparing a drinking water quality management plan, such as hazard identification, risk assessment, the multiple-barrier approach and the concept of critical control points. A promising and increasingly popular tailings management strategy is to place cemented tailings underground as backfill. The placement of cemented tailings results in enhanced geotechnical stability and a purportedly more geochemically stable tailings form with lower leaching potential. Conventional subaerial tailings management can negatively affect water quality if weathering causes acid rock drainage and metal leaching (ARD/ML) to occur, whereas cemented tailings can limit leaching via porosity and permeability reductions and contribute alkalinity to limit the potential for ARD/ML. Cemented tailings backfill appears to be better, but how can this advantage be proven? Currently, cemented tailings backfill is utilized at mining operations internationally, but there is limited guidance on performing geochemical characterization and associated evaluation of the potential impacts to water quality. As a result, various approaches to simulating the leaching behavior of cemented backfill have been utilized, including some methods that are unlikely to represent weathering under site-relevant conditions. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Test Method C1308-08 is a diffusion testing method initially developed to assess constituent release rates from solid nuclear waste forms. ASTM C1308-08 uses intact cylinders that more closely represent actual backfill than methods that require crushing or size reduction. It is widely believed that leaching from actual cemented tailings is controlled by diffusion through small pores that exhibit limited exposed surface area, making diffusion testing particularly applicable to cemented tailings placement.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mineralogy, tonnage, and beneficiating characteristics of oxidized (nonmagnetic) taconite iron resources of the Western Mesabi Range as part of its program to insure adequate future domestic mineral supplies. Magnetic taconite currently provides about 95 pct of Mesabi production, but the large tonnages of oxidized taconite between the magnetic deposits will be needed to help meet future domestic demand for iron ore. Three bulk samples that represent large tonnages from the Western Mesabi Range were selected to determine their mineral composition and liberation by light optical microscopy and to test their beneficiating response. This report describes the mineralogy and liberation characteristics of the three samples of the Biwabik Iron-Formation for 26.5 mi (42.7 kID) from Keewatin to Grand Rapids, MN. (Details of response to beneficia-tion were reported previously.) The samples represent mostly material from the Lower Cherty Member of the Biwabik-Iron Formation, although one sample included some Upper Cherty Member. Minerals of all three samples were quartz (chert), hematite, goethite, and minor to trace amounts of magnetite, iron carbonate, and iron silicates. It was concluded that the oxidized taconites of the Western Mesabi Range represent a subeconomic indicated resource that can be selectively mined and beneficiated as a future large source of iron feed for steelmaking.

WILLIAM CHURCH was one of the founders and the first president of the Detroit Copper Mining Co. and was the first man to interest the Phelps Dodge company in the possibilities of the Morenci district, in the '70's. One rather interesting story concerning him is told by James Colquhoun, at one time president of the Arizona Copper Co., in his "History of the Clifton-Morenci Mining District." It seems that a geologist visited the Detroit company's mines and gave Alec McLean, then mine superintendent, quite a lesson on the proper mineralogical terms for what he saw in passing. Later, McLean handed out a few of them to Mr. Church as they walked through the mine on a tour of inspection. The latter had even less regard for a geologist than he did for sulphide ore, which meant little indeed, for in those days the rich ore was all oxidized, and there was no money in the sulphides. So Church was completely unimpressed by the geological and mineralogical terms that McLean had acquired from the visiting geologist. Church turned on him and warned him that so long as he was a member of his staff he was to understand that there were only two kinds of rock in his mines-the one was smelting ore and the other was waste rock, and he was not to forget it.

The irregular history of Mg wrought products is briefly described. The temperature and strain rate dependence of microstructural evolution, flow stress and ductility of Mg alloys in hot working, are described. The flow curves rose rapidly to a peak stress which was lower as temperature T rose and strain rate e declined and above 300°C the curves extended into plateaus until failure. Clearly grains not oriented for slip undergo mechanical twinning in the initial stages (a 0.15) at all temperatures. Basal slip proceeds in suitable grains and in the twins. The stress concentrations at grain and twin boundaries lead to slip on non-basal systems and to the formation of subgrains with greater dynamic recovery (DRV) at higher T or lower e. With increasing strain, misorientation builds up resulting in dynamic recrystallization (DRX) first at twin intersections and later at grain boundaries which have become quite serrated. Even after extensive straining at high temperatures, the new grains are found mainly along the boundaries of the original grains, leaving their centers with only basal slip except when nucleation at twins leads to completion of DRX throughout a grain. Despite similar shear modulus and melting point to Al, hot mechanical forming behavior of Mg alloys differ due to differences in crystal slip systems, twinning, and second phases. Moreover, the influences on forming of alloy additions (solutes, segregation in casting, dispersoids, precipitation) and impurities are not as well catalogued as for Al. Despite the benefits from dynamic recrystallization, varied grain orientation effects, heterogeneous substructures and the resulting stress concentrations result in considerably lower ductility for Mg alloys at the same stress level as for Al materials. Application of these theories to extrusion, rolling and forging and the effects on product properties are surveyed.

Today road construction sites utilize more and more information modeling in design phases as well as model based 3-D machine control systems in site operations. For main contractor, the management and control of all the site operations is a demanding task including also many challenges created by continuously developing new technology. In the paper, the main requirements for successful dynamic site management are introduced. The dynamic management means real-time possibilities for information acquiring, transfer and further utilization of the information in the management. An integration model to expand the current way of management and the utilization of present 3-D machine control systems is introduced. Different practical test results using two new different dynamic management systems are presented and evaluated. The first experiments and the results have been provided using the prototype system developed in a research project called DigiINFRA by the University of Oulu and Technical Research Center of Finland. Also, there have been tested a new commercial management system developed recently in Finland. In the conclusion, an expectation for the next generation for more dynamic road construction management methods is concluded.

DURING the past year, the writer has investigated the treatment of a variety of British Columbia tungsten-bearing ores. Much of the test-work described in this paper was carried out in collaboration with Mr. A. G. Lyle in association with the British Columbia War Metals Research Board at the University of British Columbia. The remainder was completed in the laboratories of the Department of Mines at Victoria. Two mills in the Province are at present treating tungsten ores. Descriptions of these are included through the co-operation of Messrs. S. Gray (1) and A. A. Almstrom (2). MINERALOGY, OCCURRENCE, AND SPECIFICATIONS In the present paper, attention is directed solely to scheclite, inasmuch as known occurrences of other tungstcn minerals in British Columbia are of mineralogical interest only. In the current operational facility, due to the absence of pellet pot facility, a novel technique is developed wherein the pellets with different chemistries prepared in the laboratory are fired in an induration machine by placing them inside the Inconel baskets. In the present work, an attempt is made to optimize the pellet chemistry by developing 2 different flux pellets, viz., low basicity (B2: CaO/ SiO2 = 0.3) pellets and high basicity (B2 = 0.9) pellets, and further the effects of basicity on pellet properties, viz., cold compressive strength, porosity, swelling index, reducibility index, and softening and melting temperature, are studied. It has been found through the multiple operational trials that increasing the basicity of pellets from 0.3 to 0.9 results into improving the pellet strength, reducibility and softening and melting characteristics. Moreover, it is observed that the swelling index of pellets is reduced by adding 2% MgO to both low and high basicity pellets that could be attributed to the formation of high melting point slag in pellets. The operational trial has resulted into producing pellets that exhibit a combination of desired mechanical strength, improved swelling, and reducibility index and possess better softening–melting behavior among all the chemistries studied.

This paper describing the mining practices at a mine in the Southeast Missouri district is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The conditions, operating methods, and practice described in the following pages arc those obtaining at a property in the Southeastern Missouri lead belt, St. Francois County, Mo. This property is the eldest in the county and is a consolidation of a number of separate mines originally opened up as individual operations many years ago. Present-day operations have necessarily to be adapted to suit the older levels, stones, and pillars, and also the recovery of ore from worked over areas which was considered too low grade to mine in the earlier days constitutes a different problem than that of development and mining in virgin ground.
