Ballarat Goldfields Limited is currently re-opening the old workings of the East Ballarat Goldfield which contain an estimated 1800 ML of groundwater. The disposal of this 'minewater' was of concern: the minewater is of moderate salinity; increased salinity levels have interfered with agriculture and water use at a number of locations downstream from Ballarat. Extensive numerical studies indicated that treated minewater could be discharged into the Ballarat Creek system for dilution by sewage effluent and by surface runoff after rainfall events. An automatic real-time salinity management system has been developed to enable the disposal of saline minewater in this fashion. A desk top computer operates the system: discharge and salinity readings are taken automatically each hour and filed away; the maximum allowable rate of discharge of treated minewater is calculated; pumps are switched on and off. The system readily enables daily, weekly and monthly data reports together with floppy disks of 'raw' data to be prepared in formats suitable for direct submission to the Victorian Environmental Protection Authority.

The Merrill Crowe zinc-precipitation process has been applied worldwide on a large number of operations for the recovery of gold and silver resulting in a higher consumption of zinc dust from cyanide solutions. However, in some of plants this precipitate is of low quality, because lead, cadmium and especially copper are precipitated along with gold and silver. The low quality precipitate also requires more fluxes in smelting and shortens crucible life. In this study, a process is introduced to remove copper, silver, lead and cadmium from barren solutions following the Merrill-Crowe process. Copper and silver are removed by precipitation in a serpentine reactor, using sodium sulfide as the precipitator, and sulfuric acid for pH control. The recovery of lead and cadmium ions with natural hydroxyapatite using cow bone powder (CBP) as a new adsorbent material, is introduced. CBP is capable of removing lead and cadmium ions from aqueous cyanide solutions with 99% efficiency. It has the ability to compete with other existing commercial adsorbents for the removal of lead and cadmium. Results show that pH value has a significant effect on copper cyanide removal efficiency, and it was determined the optimal pH range to be 2 - 3. At this pH value, the copper cyanide removal efficiency achieved was up to 99 %; and for the cyanide associated with copper cyanide complexes, the recovery was 90%. Finally, the precipitate quality was improved 400% .This procedure was successfully run at three mines in México.

The demand for crude oil on the Pacific Coast during the year 1945. was so acute that the California crude supply had to be augmented by tank-car imports from the Texas and Rocky Mountain fields. Crude imports reached a high of 64,800 bbl. per day during June, with a total of 14,259,000 bbl. imported during the first 11 .months. The U. S. Navy also implemented the crude output from California pools by drilling and completing approximately 300 wells in the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1 (Elk Hills), from which an established production of 65,000. bbl. per day was reached in late February and maintained until Aug. 17, 1945, when it was reduced to its preprogram level of 15,000 bbl. per day. Even with the conclusion of the Pacific war on V-J day (Aug. 14), the military petroleum product requirements have permitted little material reduction in output of California crude to prewar rates. During the year, a total of 327-760,000 bbl. of crude was produced, or 19 per cent of the total crude production within the United States during the same period, as compared with 310,996,000 bbl. or 18.4 per cent of the nation's crude production in 1944.

Plastic deformation in magnesium single crystals was studied by tensile tests at room temperature utilizing an improved preparation and testing technique. Consistent critical resolved shear stress values for basal slip were obtained. The advent of pyramidal slip at room temperature was rationalized upon the basis of grip constraints. A bend-twinning hypothesis was advanced as an explanation of mechanical twinning which occurs as a complex stress-relief mechanism. INVESTIGATIONS of the plastic deformation of magnesium have been limited to the determination of the fundamental kinetics which may be summarized as follows: 1—Twinning on the {102).l 2— Slip on the (001) plane in the [loo] direction at room temperature.' 3—Slip on the {101) or {102) plane in the [loo] direction above 225°C." 4—Critical resolved shear stresses for basal slip in tension at room temperature of 83 g per sq mm with a variation from 57 to 127 g per sq mm." Bakarian' studied the compression of thin wafers of magnesium single crystals and classified the components of the deformation mechanisms as follows: 1—The Basal field: (001) at an angle of less than 20" to the compression surface. Fracture along {101} or slip on (001) followed by {101} fracture. 2—The prism field: (001) at an angle greater than 60" to the compression surface. Twinning on the {102) generally occurring during the early stages of loading, basal slip in the areas of original orientation and (001) slip within twins. 3—The central field: (001) at angles greater than 20" but less than 60" to the compression surface. Slip on the (001). 4—The critical resolved shearing stress for {101} slip above 225°C was 400 g per sq mm. Observations of mechanical twins in hexagonal close-packed metals have been summarized by numerous investigatorsb-' emphasizing a lateral or rotational atomic adjustment, in addition to the pure twinning shear, and the importance of reorienting the basal plane to a position more favorable for continued slip, rather than the resulting small dimensional changes. Criterion for the operative twinning planes has not been clearly established. Schmid and Boas hurmised that an energy condition related to the atom movements is the determining factor. MillerQ bserved that twinning stresses in zinc crystals decreased as the amount of prior deformation increased. THE aim of this paper is to point out the various ways in which design is taught in standard four-year mining engineering curricula in American colleges and universities; to discuss the reasons apparently justifying the great diversity of procedure that exists along this line; and to indicate possible solutions to the difficulties now attending the teaching of design. A study was made of typical four-year mining engineering curricula in 15 colleges and universities of the United States (Table I). Great diversity in content of the various design courses, if taught as described, became apparent immediately. It appeared that it might be both interesting and instructive if the cause for this colorful variety could be found. Was the cause local mining conditions, departmental individuality, or actual necessity? Study of the school catalogues revealed that the various design courses could be classified into two fairly distinct types; namely, (I) those dealing with mine equipment or structures, and (2) those dealing with underground layout of mine workings. It seemed reasonable to label the first type of course "mining design" and the second type "mine design." Some such distinction must have been in the minds of mining educators, for we find both names (i.e., mine design and mining design) used to designate the design courses included in the various mining curricula. Unhappily, the name and the apparent content of such courses do not, in all instances, conform to the classification made here, although in most instances such conformation does obtain (Table I), It is possible that in the exceptional case the method of teaching a design course, and consequently the content of it, may have been changed at some time without change in the name of the course. Apparently only 3 of the I5 schools made an effort to cover both types of design in their curricula (Table I). Two other schools did not list or describe any course of study that could with certainty be taken as a design course. Of the remaining 10 schools, 9 gave a mining-design type of course and one gave a strictly mine-design type. Obviously, the preponderance of design courses afforded are of the mining-design type. Why? To answer this question, it is necessary to make a study of the prerequisites for the two types of design courses taught. In all schools the design courses were taught in the senior year; in eight, design was taught throughout both semesters; in two, it was taught during the first semester only; and in three it was taught during the second semester only. Consequently, excepting the last three cases noted, it is obvious that all prerequisites for a design course should be completed by the end of the junior year. PREREQUISITES What are the probable prerequisites for the different kinds of design courses as they appear to be taught? The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerksdorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7988 acres or 12.5 sq miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26-ft diam down-cast shaft and a 22 ft-diam up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month. To exploit the Eastern zone of the property and assist in increasing production to 200,000 tons milled per month, it was decided to sink a further Twin Shaft System consisting of a 28-ft diam downcast shaft and a ventilation up-cast shaft -22-ft in diam, both monolithic concrete lined — 200 ft apart and 5300 ft deep. This paper deals with the sinking and commissioning of these Eastern Twin Shafts. This was achieved by one sinking crew within a period of 20 months. A) PLANNING 1) Siting: The Eastern Shaft System was sited in the north-east area of the property, 12,000 ft east on strike from the Pioneer System. (Fig. 1). Initially the system was sunk to the 5300 ft elevation to conform with the original Pioneer Shaft System. On completion a sub-vertical main shaft will be sunk to the 8000 ft elevation in the immediate vicinity, and subsequently the surface ventilation shaft will be deepened to this elevation by raising from level to level and sliping to full size. The exact positions of the shafts were chosen after: a) underground development had located certain known water bearing zones, and b) geophysical and topographical surveys had been carried out. The shafts passed through the following geological succession: Surface to 4430 ft - Dolomites of the Transvaal System 4430 to 4470 ft - Quartzites and conglomerates of the Black Reef Series of the Transvaal System. 4470 to 4470 ft - Diabasic Lava of the Venters-dorp System (Ventersdorp Contact Reef at base). 4470 to 5250 ft - Quartzites of the Elsburg Series of the Upper Witwaters-rand System. The shafts were sited to ensure that the least possible water would be encountered during sinking, and this contributed to the rapid rate of sinking. 2) Duties: a) The 22-ft diam ventilation shaft was designed to up-cast 1,400,000 cfm of air (0.060 density) against a resistance of 22 in. water gauge. b) The main shaft was designed to handle 160,000 tons hoisted per month as well as the men, material and down-cast ventilation to serve this tonnage. The 284 diam main shaft is equipped with streamlined buntons spaced at 15 ft centers set in pockets which were left during sinking. There are six compartments, four of which are sewed by two dual purpose hoists, hoisting either, twedeck man cages or 13-ton bottom discharge skips. The other two compartments are served by a single purpose winder hoisting double deck cages accommodating 60 men per deck. (Fig. 2). 3) Timing: Permanent equipment was ordered well in advance to insure continuity in the operation. Development underground reached the shaft positions before the start of sinking operations. From this development, boreholes were drilled into shaft positions to drain off water in the vicinity of the shafts. To ensure complete co-ordination of effort, all relevant data, as well as the allocation of responsibility, were made known to all persons and departments concerned. 4) Models: The extensive use of scale models during the preliminary planning stages proved most useful in deciding on design such as buntons, bunton pockets and guide cleats, and complex layouts concerning loading, spillage and pumping arrangements. In today’s operating environment many conventional cleaner circuits struggle to produce final grade concentrate with acceptable levels of non-sulfide gangue and/or penalty elements. This is primarily due to poor selectivity and the entrainment of gangue, and is further exacerbated by the processing of lower grade ores with more complex mineralogy that require finer grinding for liberation. In new concentrators, the standard approach to cleaner circuit design is to define the number of stages of mechanical cells required to achieve the desired concentrate grade. Residence time is the primary factor to size cells and to determine the number of cells required to attain target recovery. While it is required for recovery, a bank of mechanical cells is not the ideal solution to maximise concentrate grade. Relatively coarse bubble size means slow flotation of fines, requiring long residence times. The combination of long residence times and no froth washing means higher entrainment as the pulp becomes more barren and froth stability decreases down a bank.In recent years, the Jameson Cell technology has been retrofitted into a number of concentrators around the world to solve both cleaner circuit capacity and concentrate grade issues. Jameson Cells have been installed at the head of conventional cleaner circuits to produce final grade concentrate in a single step of flotation using a single cell (referred to here as ‘cleaner scalping’ duty). The experience gained from these installations has provided the platform for the design of improved and simpler cleaner circuits that will perform better and be more robust to operate. This paper analyses traditional cleaner circuit designs and explains the philosophy behind new hybrid cleaner circuits, which use Jameson Cells to produce final concentrate and mechanical cells for a ‘cleaner scavenger’ duty. The advantages of the new cleaner circuit design are demonstrated by a case study from an operating plant. Engineering studies show that the better metallurgical performance can be achieved with less equipment than conventional cleaning designs, reducing capital cost, operating cost, and with more than 30 per cent energy savings.Finally, the paper describes simple modifications to the standard laboratory flotation test procedures which accurately simulate this new cleaner circuit using routine equipment.CITATION:Huynh, L, Araya, R, Seaman, D R, Harbort, G and Munro, P D, 2014. The US Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board is sponsoring the development of a risk-based explosives safety siting program, SAFER. The fragment and debris hazard generated at the potential explosion site (PES) is critical at an exposed site (ES) over a significant range of standoff distances. The Science Panel Impact Debris Evaluation and Review (SPIDER) test program has been planned to develop improved predictions for the hazards inside an ES by fragments and debris. Data will include the mass and velocity required for perforation of the test cross-section and the characteristics of all debris produced inside the ES.

The man in the street (and no doubt most members of the Institute) thinks of wire, if he gives it any thought at all, as a most commonplace commodity. It is an accepted necessity, and like most necessities is taken for granted, unless a shortage in one or other of its multitudinous forms or products causes inconvenience.For many years Australia has ·been a large consumer of wire, particularly for fencing. With the rapid development of secondary industry the demand has increased in both size and character until at the present time much of the wire produced in this country is used as raw material for subsequent manufacturing processes. The call has been of so varied a nature that the Newcastle Wire Mills now turn out a greater variety of wire types than any other single plant in the world.In this paper, the aim is to provide a picture of the manufacturing, properties, and uses of wire. No attempt is made to cover the subject in any detail, as the field is much too broad for anything other than general treatment. Many phases, particularly in regard to manufacturing processes, are, therefore, dealt with cursorily, but it is hoped that the paper will, without delving too deeply into the technical aspects of Wire production, give a general appreciation of:- (a) How steel wire is made. (b) The remarkable physical characteristics obtained by judicious combination of chemical composition, heat treatment, and subsequent cold work. (c) The uses of steel wire.HISTORY.Best known of the early references to wire is that appearing in Exodus, where mention is made of gold wire being used for the sacerdotal robes of Aaron. However, the period in question, about B.O. 1491, is comparatively modern history as far as wire is concerned, for specimens believed to have been made about B.O. 4600 have been found. Since its beginning, the occupation of coal mining has been considered hazardous. It is true that there are hazards inherent in mining, but it is believed that most of them, at least, can be guarded against. Moreover, many man-made hazards can be eliminated by officials and workers adopting safer practices. Notwithstanding the hazards in coal mining, the fatal accident rate in the United States has improved. During the, period from 1911, to 1941, inclusive, the fatal accident rate varied from 5.35 to 2.22 per million tons of coal. With many handicaps during the war period, 1942-45, such as the lack of experienced manpower. and the, employment of untrained men, the increased average age of workers, and the shortage of equipment and supplies, the industry s ill further reduced its accident rate, so that it ranged from 2.30 to 1.724/ deaths per millon tons of coal. During 1944, 684,000,000 tons of coal was produced with a rate of 1.91, and during 1945, 631,000,000 tons was produced with a rate of 1.724/ deaths per millon tons of coal. The accident rate for 1945 was the lowest for the industry since records have been compiled.

In gold processing plants, the water from the cyanidation stages is treated to detoxify cyanide species and this recycle water becomes the main part of the process water. Despite the low concentration of free and weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanides in process water, the recoveries of gold and silver is still affected during flotation, especially when gold and silver are associated with iron sulfide minerals. This is a case at the Hidden Valley (HV) Mine. In this study, the effect of free and WAD cyanides on gold and silver recoveries by flotation from the HV Mine was considered.WAD cyanide (WAD CN) was prepared by mixing sodium cyanide and copper sulfate at a cyanide to copper ratio of 3:1 dosed at different cyanide concentrations. It was found that both free and WAD CN depressed gold and silver and particularly iron sulfides in flotation. The depressed gold and silver recoveries were closely associated with the depressed recovery of iron sulfide minerals, suggesting that free and WAD CN may not depress the flotation of liberated gold and silver minerals significantly. It was also found that 10 ppm free cyanide completely depressed the flotation of iron sulfide minerals and WAD CN depression is probably through the WAD dissociation to free cyanide species (mainly aqueous HCN) during the grinding process, resulting from a decrease in pH. Thermodynamic calculation showed that 5.5 ppm free cyanide was released in the end of grinding at an initial WAD CN concentration of 50 ppm. The Bureau of Mines conducted studies to provide data on the room temperature mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy cast in waterglass-bonded zircon sand and to determine the effect of hot iso-static pressing (HIP) on these properties. Data on the cast and annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloy were compared with published data for forged and investment-cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The average Charpy V-notch impact strength compared favorably with the typical values of 17 ft?lbf for wrought material and 19.2 ft?lbf for investment-cast material. The room temperature mechanical proper-ties of cast and annealed material compared favorably with published values for investment-cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy and exceeded the specifications for (1) titanium and titanium alloy castings, grade C-5 according to ASTM B367-69, and (2) titanium alloy bars and forgings as specified in AMS4928H, except for the AMS4928H minimum requirement for reduction in area (25 pct). The minimum requirements are: tensile strength, 130 ksi; yield strength, 120 ksi (0.2 pct); and elongation, 6 pct. None of the specimens tested met the AMS4928H minimum requirement for reduction in area. The HIP process healed the internal casting porosity in the test specimens, but the fatigue strength was not significantly improved. The fatigue properties of both the cast and cast plus hot isostatically pressed castings were significantly lower than those of wrought products.

Electrowinning and solvent extraction are crucial steps in the production of high-purity copper. However, safety concerns have been raised regarding the acid mist generated from the electrowinning process. The mist generated results in health risks to workers and damage to machinery and infrastructure. Currently, chemicals and pellets are used to control acid mist. However, the effectiveness of these controls may vary depending on the type of organic solvent used in the solvent extraction process, which can influence the generation of acid mist. This study aims to evaluate the impacts of organic solvents and surfactants on acid mist suppression. In this study, an electrolyte is contacted with organic solvents to simulate the solvent extraction. The electrolyte is dosed with 20 mg/L of surfactant at each contact. Acid mist testing is performed on the electrolyte separated from the organic phase at the end of the solvent extraction step. The mist collected is analyzed to determine the level of acid mist generated. The results of this study indicate that organic solvents and surfactants showed significant acid mist suppression, but with somewhat different suppression efficiencies. After first contact, Licorice and the organic, for instance, showed a suppression efficiency of up to 69.7% but its efficiency gradually decreased as the number of contacts increased.

Royal Nickel Corporation is developing the Dumont Nickel Project, a large nickel sulphide deposit located near the town of Amos, Québec. The nickel occurs as pentlandite, heazlewoodite, and awaruite. The relatively low grade ore can be processed to a very high grade nickel concentrate, containing 29% Ni. The absence of copper and precious metals in the ore renders this concentrate amenable to processing by dead roasting in a fluid-bed roaster and smelting in an electric furnace to produce ferronickel for sale to stainless steel producers. Laboratory test work and conceptual engineering design was completed to demonstrate the amenability of Dumont concentrate to produce ferro-nickel.

Most coal mines in Chongqing Area are highly gassy mines and liable to outburst of coal cnd methane. In order to harness mine environment and raise the Prodction capacity, methane predrainage is generally taken as a main preventive measure against outburst by all mines. In the recent ten years, the drainage volume per year has increased from 38.25 million m3 to mote than 100 million m3 with a volume over 12 m3 per tome of coal. In some mines, the draining rate is approaching to 50 percent, the rate in mining districts is up to 60 to 70 percent. The predrainage volume accounts for one fourth of total drainage volume. All these have effectively prevented the occurrence of coal and methane outbursts.This is the current situation of methane predrainage in coal mines in Chongqing area, the methods of predrainage to prevent outbursts and related parametres comprise:1. methods, technologies, supervision and effect of predrainage in different geological and mining conditions,2. the change of methane parametres pre-and post-drainage and the analysis of the effect of methane predrainage to prevent outbursts, and3. ways to improve the effect of methane predrainage.Thus the safety, reliability and production of Changqing Coal Mines will be enhanced.

An algorithm is proposed for updating the probability of slope failure on the basis of sequential testing using Bayesian probability theory. The approach is novel and computationally straightforward since, unlike other methods, updating of the probability of failure is carried out directly. This is because the probability is treated as a random variable whereas other methods have considered it as a purely deterministic value or as a function of shear strength parameters that are updated individually. The prior information required for the Bayesian analysis is obtained by a conventional probabilistic analysis. An exponential distribution is then used for the probability of failure, applying the principle of maximum entropy. This distribution is continually updated for individual slope cells, where repetitive excavation creates several such cells and a corresponding series of Bayesian estimates of the probability of failure is obtained. The approach is applicable to most simulations but there are limitations on its use. A more mathematically rigorous refinement using the beta distribution is currently under development

SULFUR poisoning of iron catalysts in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was investigated at the Bureau of Mines, because synthesis gas produced from coal contains sulfur compounds. Tests of two typical iron catalysts with synthesis gas containing known concentrations of H2S were made to determine catalyst life as a function of sulfur concentration to ascertain the type of gas purification required. Fixed beds of activated steel turnings and a fused iron oxide catalyst were investigated in sulfur poisoning tests at 21.4 atmospheres with IH2+100 gas containing 6.9, 23, or 69 mg S as H2S per cubic meter (0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 gr per 100 cu. ft.). In tests of reduced catalysts at constant temperatures, more than 80 percent of the activity was lost when 0.5 mg S/g Fe was introduced. Poisoning of nitrided or carbided fused iron oxide catalysts to a given extent required more than twice as much sulfur than for the corresponding reduced catalyst. When the synthesis temperature was increased to compensate for loss in activity, tests of the fused iron oxide catalysts at constant productivity could be continued for 19 to 98 days. The tests were terminated by clogging of the reactor, presumably caused by carbon deposition. One objective of the present work was to determine if synthesis gas, purified by the Bureau of Mines' hot-potassium carbonate process for removing H2S, OOS, and CO2, is suitable for synthesis on iron catalysts. The sulfur content of the gas purified by tills process is in the range of concentrations used in the present work. In constant-productivity tests of nitrided fused iron oxide catalysts with synthesis gas containing 6.9 mg S/m3, catalyst lives are nearly long enough for serious consideration of tills mode of operation. However, factors relating to selectivity and stability of the catalyst indicate that this type of operation is impractical for a commercial process. On this basis additional gas purification, such as iron oxide boxes following a hot potassium carbonate scrubber, is desirable.

There are a number of methods available for the determination of the fracture toughness of rock. Some of the most recognised methods include the hollow pressured cylinder, the short-rod, the chevron - edge-notched round bar in bending and the disc-shaped compact specimen. Most of these tests are difficult and expensive to conduct. In this paper the simple Brazilian testing of discs for tensile strength has been used to determine their fracture toughness. In an area north of Mowit Ica chip sampling of limonitic outcrops on a regional scale led to the investigation of a number of areas considered to be geochemically anomalous for copper and zinc. These areas were closely gridded,end where geochemical results were favourable, they were subsequently drilled or ro¦titeaned Che results indicated that for copper Lne anomalies were mainly associated wiL_ ironstone formed in areas of faulting. is suggested that copper is able to move considerable distances by ground water movement and is likely to be fixed under conditions of low pH. The movement of zinc is more difficult to explain but it appears to have an affinity for iron and is only deposited in areas having a high pH (i.e. doioiirific scdimet=Cs).

This study identifies nonfatal injury incidence rates, nature of injury, work activities, glove usage, and sources of hand and finger injuries in the U.S. mining industry, as reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2011 to 2017. Hand and finger injuries occur at a rate of 6.53 per 1000 full-time employees, which is nearly double the rate of the next highest affected body part, the back.
