"Rock failure process is generally recorded or measured using conventional sensors like strain gauges, seismic, micro-seismic, acoustic, electromagnetic and other techniques. The above sensors are either to be pasted on the surface of the rock sample or placed very near to it to capture the response of the sample with the increment of load. This requires precise tools to cut or polish the locations where sensors are to be placed. Moreover, deformation or acoustic or micro-seismic activities are recorded only at the locations where sensors are pasted.Recent development in Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique has shown promise to measure deformation / strain at every location of the surface of a sample. In DIC, two images (reference and deformed) are taken within a small time interval of the same object are compared to estimate the change in reflectance as a function of displacement, velocity or rate of strain at each pixel while the object is undergoing through a loading process. In this study, extended digital image correlation (X-DIC) technique has been implemented using 4-noded quadrilateral elements with a discontinuity surface in the deformed image. The continuous and enriched displacements are estimated at each node.The X-DIC method is verified using numerically generated images. The study has been further extended to evaluate the performance of X-DIC method on deformation analysis of experimental samples under uni-axial loading condition. The results of this study show that X-DIC method is an effective tool for determination of displacements of the entire surface of a rock sample having a discrete crack or discontinuity in a non-contact manner. This method demonstrates the applicability to investigate rock failure mechanism for the entire sample in a laboratory set up as well as monitoring of pillar failure mechanism in underground mines."

The direct dissolution of a typical zinc sulfide flotation concentrate by elevated temperature and pressure leaching was investigated. The concentrate assayed about 55 percent Zn, 32 percent S, 6 percent Fe, and 1 percent Pb and contained minor quantities of copper and precious metals. The influence of various factors on the dissolution of the zinc in acidic and ammoniacal pulps when using oxygen as the oxidant was determined. The tests revealed that the sphalerite was difficult to oxidize. Complete dissolution of the mineral required vigorous and intimate nixing of the gaseous, liquid, and sold phases. The addition of pyrite or sulfuric acid to water slurries of the concentrate was required to obtain a high zinc extraction when leaching under acidic conditions. The quantity of pyrite and acid used was about 0.125 and 0.25 pound, respectively, per pound of zinc sulfide contained in the leach charge. In tests with acid, about 96 percent of the zinc was extracted from the concentrate in 1 hour at 200° C. when the oxygen partial pressure was 75 pounds per square inch gage or higher. Leaching with a continuous flow of air as the oxidant gave results that were almost as good as those obtained when oxygen was used, In tests with air fed through the autoclave at 320 liters per hour, 95 percent of the zinc was dissolved in 1 hour, Acid leach solutions assaying approximately 58 grams Zn per liter and containing Fe, Ni, Cr, and Cu impurities were produced in the better tests. The leached residue consisted essentially of red iron oxide together with substantially all of the lead and precious metals.

This report is a compilation of results of preliminary concentration tests of seven manganese-ore samples. Six of the seven samples were submitted through the Mining Division, and 1 from Mexico was submitted by H. A. Doerner, formerly chief metallurgist, Region III. These investigations were made to assist development of mineral resources and particularly to aid economical exploitation of marginal or complex ores, from which strategic or critical minerals may be recovered.

The data contained in this report were obtained incidental to the Bureau of Mine's investigation of the lime-soda sinter process as applied to the recovery of alumina from siliceous bauxite, kaolin, and other high aluminous materials. The Bureau of Mines was charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of aluminum from domestic low-grade ores. The Eastern Experiment Station at College Park, Md., conducted laboratory and pilot-plant investigations of the recover-y of alumina by the lime-soda sinter process. Reports by the College Park staff covering the recovery of alumina from these sources have been published. The lime-soda sinter process involves the sintering of the finely ground siliceous bauxite or clay with limestone and soda ash in a rotary kiln. During the sintering the alumina supposedly reacts with the soda ash to form soluble sodium aluminate and the silica combines with the lime to form the insoluble orthosilicate. In the early stages of the investigation it was considered desirable to know the temperatures at which the phase changes occurred during the sintering operation. The total time involved in the passage of any given portion of the charge through the kiln was 28 minutes. The exposure time of the charge to temperatures above 600° C. (decomposition temperature of kaolinite) was, roughly, half the total. The exposure to the full temperature of the kiln, 1,100° C was only 3 minutes. (Subsequently, the maximum kiln temperature and retention time were increased.)

A comparison of the amount of minus-28-mesh product produced by a standard grinding test procedure is provided for 45 non-metallic materials. The percentage of product, the weight of product per unit of energy used and the weight of product per mill revolution are shown. The results exhibited excellent reproducibility and demonstrated an accurate comparison of grindability for non-metallic materials.

The Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996, as amended, embeds an occupational health and safety management system that facilitates communication between representatives of the state, capital, and labour. In underground mines, two communication loops between these role players serve to separate the production chain of command from the political tripartite relations. Worker-elected health and safety representatives are involved in both communication loops, but are severely constrained in escalating their occupational health and safety concerns to the legalpolitical level. This has a direct bearing on the exercise of the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW). As previously reported, health and safety representatives were found to primarily consult their production supervisors in preference to their trade-union representatives. This follow-up article presents production supervisor perspectives on the RRDW. The study demonstrates how, for mineworkers, the two distinct communication subsystems constrain, rather than facilitate, implementation of the RRDW.

Briefly, this swelling test consists in heating 1 gram of pulverized coal in a silica crucible over a gas flame under prescribed conditions to form a coke button which is compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles numbered 1 to 9. These profiles are intended to cover the size and shape of buttons obtained from coals covering a wide range in plastic properties. The number of the standard profile with which the maximum cross-sectional area of the button most nearly corresponds is recorded as the swelling index. Although the swelling test showed poor relationships with the various tests that were used for measuring expansion or contraction of coal during carbonization, it gave indications of having value in measuring free-swelling and coking properties of coals when burned on fuel tests. An opportunity to investigate this occurred when an engineering company reported pronounced differences in burning characteristics on grates of various shipments of Pocahontas coal. Some of these coals gave trouble by swelling excessively and clogging the grate. Samples were obtained, and it was found that the troublesome coals gave radically higher free-swelling numbers than did the coals that performed satisfactorily. Also, it was found that the free-swelling index test gave better differentiation between coals than could be obtained from the coke buttons from the standard volatile-matter test or iron agglutination-value results. The results of the free-swelling test were confirmed by the Subcommittee on Plasticity and Swelling, Coal, a special group of the Subcommittee, under the chairmanship of R.A. Shuman, worked along with the test method. Estberg, Limacher, and Shuman of the Battelle Memorial Institute investigated the various factors affecting the test and found that the swelling index was a good indication of the suitability of coal for performance on residential-type stokers from the swelling characteristics of the coal. Data were presented that also showed that the index was helpful in the selection of coal for industrial underfeed stokers.

(Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911.) THREE great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba; Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.1 The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surficial ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2 . 1 A Geological Reconnoissance of Cuba, by C. The basic character of the free energy r data relating to water and the oxides of carbon makes it desirable that the most representative values that can be obtained should be constantly available. The calculations of Lewis and Randall3 retain much of their of original value, but appear to require some modification in the light of more recent work. This paper has been written to incorporate the newer information and to present some estimate of the reliability of the resulting figures. The data upon which the calculations are mainly based are, for these substances, the equilibrium constants of the various reactions involved. The original work relating to these equilibria has, been reviewed and, where possible, weighted to correspond with its probable reliability. The differences in the results of the present from the earlier calculations are partly the consequence of this appraisal and partly of the inclusion of more extensive data, as will be indicated in detail in the succeeding sections.

Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. It is believed that many of the problems encountered in the operation of gold cyanidation plants are difficult to resolve due to the lack of sufficient and reliable in-formation regarding the variations and actual values of operating variables at any given time. The application of instruments to monitor the more important variables in the cyanidation process should result in more efficient plant operation and a better understanding of the process. The use of pH and conductivity sensing devices for alkalinity measurements, a monitor to determine the dissolved oxygen content of plant solutions, a continuous cyanide titrator and sonic control of grinding circuits are discussed. Although the discussion is oriented toward the cyanide process, much of the paper is applicable to other ore treatment operations.

Although silicon carbide has been an important manufacture refractory for many years, knowledge of its thermodynamic values has been seriously lacking. In fact, some of the very properties that make it a useful substance, particularly chemical inertness, obstruct determination of its heats of formation and reaction. This paper reports the results of new measurements of the heats of combustion and formation, low-temperature heat capacity, entropy at 298.16°K., and heat-content and entropy increments between 298° and l,800°K. Two varieties of silicon carbide were studied -the common, hexagonal (type II) and cubic. The data are combined to obtain heat and free-energy-of-formation functions, which are given in tabular form. It is shown that the cubic variety is the more stable at temperatures to at least 1,800°K but, because of the inherent difficulties and errors in the heat-of-formation determinations at 298°K, it was not found possible to specify the free-energy difference accurately. The mechanism of silicon carbide formation from silica and carbon is not known and is not ascertainable from thermodynamic data. It appears improbable, however, that it can be a single-step reaction. Some reactions involving silicon monoxide gas and metallic Silicon, as possible intermediates in silicon carbide formation, are considered and shown to be thermodynamically feasible.

[During the past two and a half sears the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the different coal operators, have been making an extensive studs of coal preparation in the State of Alabama. Considerable time has been devoted to the studs of the washing characteristics of the Mars Lee bed and the various methods used In preparing from it a low-ash coal suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. One of the phases of this problem is the utilization of middlings products from the washing plants. This paper gives the results of treating jig middlings on a coal-washing table at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Tuscaloosa, Ala. The sample used was secured from the Sayreton washery of the Republic Steel Corporation, Sayreton, Ala. WASHERY PRACTICE The Mary Lee bed is very bony, and operators find it difficult to produce from this bed a washed coal much under 10 per cent ash. Experience has shown that in the preparation of a coking coal from the Mary Lee bed it is best to use a process which permits the recovery of a middlings product. Middlings are desirable because separation according to specific gravity is never perfect, and a middlings product makes possible a low ash in the primary warned coal without excessive losses of combustible in the refuse. The general washery practice on the Mary Lee bed is to crush the run-of-mine coal through some maximum screen size and wash it upon some one type of jig without re-treatment of any of the products made. The maximum size treated varies from 3 inch to J inch. The middlings product from multiple-cell jigs is usually termed "boiler fuel" and when possible is utilized as such. At present the production of boiler fuel is often in excess of power requirements, and the surplus, due to its high ash content, becomes waste.]

A method was developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for evaluating viscosity data from slurries obtained in leaching sinters from the lime soda sinter process for extracting alumina from aluminous silicates. The logarithm of the viscosity was observed to be a linear function with time. The slope of the plotted line provides a means for evaluating viscosity behavior in a lime soda sinter blurry and also a means for comparing gelation characteristics directly with other variables in the lime soda sinter process. This report presents one aspect of a continuing study by the Bureau of Mines on methods for treating siliceous aluminum ores. It is one of the many programs of the Bureau concerned with conservation, development, and use of our domestic minerals resources. Previous investigations of lime soda processes, both by the Bureau4-7/ and industrial concerns, have demonstrated that sintered materials containing CaO, Na2O, A1203, and S102 in various combinations exhibit a tendency to gel or set when mixed with water or other extraction solutions. Gelling prevents satisfactory recovery of alumina and in extreme cases prevents operation of an extraction plant.

The desirability of efficient control of air currents, and the necessity of supplying metal-mine workers with better and safer working conditions, has created an active interest in metal-mine ventilation, especially in recent years. This paper discusses the subject both with regard to efficiency and economy, as well as safety and health. It is based on personal observations of the writer from over four year's study of metal mines in six States, in which more than 50 mines were visited. Many of these were studied in detail; in all several thousand working places were examined, and readings taken relative to ventilation run into the tens of thousands.Object of ventilating metal mines:Whereas in coal mines ventilation is generally regarded as essential, in many metal mines, especially shallow ones, the operators pay little attention to ventilation, or ignore it altogether. Recent shortage of labor, and numerous accidents to which State compensation laws have directed attention, are causing metal-mine operators to regard ventilation more seriously, especially in deep, large mines.There is, in fact, greater necessity for adequate ventilation of metal mines than of coal mines. The latter require air currents to remove explosive gases and the fumes of explosives, but metal mines, in addition to the need of removing fumes of explosives, and occasionally explosive gases, frequently have need of removing dusts dangerous to health, reduction of high temperatures and high humidity, and removal of inert but unhealthful gases like CO2 and nitrugen. The generally accepted superior healthfulness of coal miners as compared with metal miners, is probably due in large part to the better air circulation in working places of coal mines.

"Advantages of gas/flux injection technology as materialized in the main stay unit processes for steelmaking are depicted covering hot metal pretreatment through secondary refining. Current status of micro-kinetic issues involved in the injection technology are reviewed including gas-in- metal, gas-in-slag, flux-in-metal, metal-in-flux and three-phase dispersion systems with reference to macro-kinetics. Key problems are briefly addressed to further develop injection technology for steelmaking processes.1. FROM PAST TO PRESENTApplication of gas injection to steel industry started in early 1950's when inert gas bubbling via stopper rod, lance, or porous refractory plug was practiced to make the temperature of steel melt in ladle uniform The gas bubbling in ladle was then extended to slightly removing hydrogen ti'om the steel melt tapped from Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Basic Open Hearth Furnace (BOH) when vacuum processing facilities were not popular. Later, oxygen gas injection via calorized steel pipe into molten steel bath in BOH Furnace was also put into operation to promote the decarburization to increase the productivity of the process. This line of development has been made in parallel with more profound processes, i.e, top blowing Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) for primary steelmaking and side blowing Argon Oxygen Oecarburization (AOD) vessel for decarburizing stainless steels.On the other hand, injection of fluxes into steel bath was first industrialized in Germany in 1960's, Primary objective was to desulfurize steel melt in ladle by injecting CaC2 or CaCrCaO mixture via lance under neutral slag cover with good success. Difficulties in injecting fluxes without clogging and rippling at a desired flux/gas ratio, and durability of injection lance were resolved in due time to bring forth many injection facilities to flourish for versatile refining operation. Top injection of fluxes from main oxygen lance to BOF was also industrialized as LDAC to promote early slag formation. A new process then emerged which injects oxygen gas and fluxes together through concentric annular tuyere, installed at the bottom of the BOE into steel melt. This process, developed in Germany [Oxygen Bottom Maxhutte (OBM)] and brought into maturity in USA (Q-BOP) and Japan in a large scale operation, became the predecessor of the combined blowing (top and bottom blown) BOF which dominates modern steelmaking."

In connection with the purchase of coal under specifications for Government use, the Bureau of Mines in this report has compiled data on 81 mines located in 15 States. This annual report lists analytical data on the composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1973. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. The deliveries were sampled at destination in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines. All samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

The Current demand for potash has pushed world prices to record levels and allowed Saskatchewan producers to operate at maximum capacity. Several years of strong demand has resulted in a permitting rush not seen since the 1960?s. Even though Saskatchewan has a huge potash resource, mining and processing constraints will limit the areas of economic development. Introduction In 1969 M. E. Holter prepared a report ?The Middle Devonian Prairie Evaporite of Saskatchewan?, published by the then Dept. of Mineral Resources. Holter?s report has remained the bible of geologists working in potash ever since. It is astounding that a report written before there was really much potash mining history in the province, is as valid today as when it was first published. This paper re-iterates much of Holter?s report and adds a little mining experience to essentially confirm the importance of his work.

The Mount Isa copper deposit is located adjacent to the city of Mount Isa, Queensland, and lies within a series of Palaeoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic Superbasins. The deposit is hosted almost entirely within the Urquhart Shale (US), a unit of the Mount Isa Group sediments and part of the Isa Superbasin. The copper mineralisation is separated into two distinct orebodies: the X41 mine (1100 and 1900 orebodies) and the Enterprise mine (3000 and 3500 orebodies). The orebodies are situated in the hanging wall of the major controlling structures, the Paroo Fault, which has juxtaposed older basement Eastern Creek Volcanics against the younger Mount Isa Group sediments cf 1655 ± 4 Ma. Conjecture remains over the exact timing of this thrust event. However, it is clear that inflections on the Paroo Fault have a close association with the orebodies and are an important structural feature in the mineralisation of the Mount Isa copper deposit.The life-of-mine is reducing steadily and new geomechanical modelling techniques were employed to target structurally controlled mineralised zones in three dimensions. Following a structural review of the mine using underground mapping, structural data and core shed observations, a conceptual 3D mine model was constructed utilising existing data modelled in MineSight®. This conceptual model included all the main lithological units and structures. The conceptual model aimed to test the effects of deformation on the main lithological and structural components of the system and attempted to highlight areas of anomalous stress and strain that may indicate a higher likelihood of fluid focusing and mineralisation potential. This project was focused on testing the latter stages of a D3 event (NE–SW compression) and D4 event (SE–NW compression), which are considered to be responsible for the current location of the mineralisation.The fully coupled 3D finite element analysis models resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two deformation events. The NE–SW D3 simulation provided the best correlation with the known distribution of mineralisation. This event also indicated several areas on the Paroo Fault and within the US that have potential to host further areas of mineralisation. The SE–NW D4 simulation provided less of a correlation with known mineralised zones. However, this event may have been responsible for post mineralisation re-mobilisation of copper on a relatively small scale. Areas of maximum shear strain, shear stress, volumetric strain and fluid flow correlated well with areas of minimum principal stress and provided the best overall match with known mineralised zones. Furthermore, several additional highlighted areas provide a high potential for further discovery of copper mineralisation. Recent exploration drilling north of the Enterprise mine 3000 orebody, utilising geomechanical modelling as part of the targeting criteria, intersected copper mineralisation, providing further validation of the modelling results.CITATION:McLellan, J G, O’Sullivan, R, Miller, B and Taylor, D, 2014.
