Froth flotation processes are carried out in flotation cells that are grouped into banks, and these banks are interconnected, forming a flotation circuit. A literature review shows the existence of papers related to flotation circuit design based on mathematical programming. However, due to the complexity of solving the mathematical model in most of the work, it is considered that a small number of species is present in the feed to the circuit, which differs from practice. In addition, simple bank models are generally used. This paper presents a methodology for designing mineral concentration circuits that overcomes the problems mentioned. It allows the use of more suitable cell or bank models and the inclusion of several species. The methodology is based on two phases. The first phase identifies the set of optimal structures using discrete values of stage recoveries, solving several mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problems. In the second phase, the optimal design for each of the structures obtained in the previous phase is determined using a suitable model for the recovery at each cell or bank, which results in a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. The design of a copper concentration plant with eight species and the design of a zinc concentration plant with three species and five size fractions by species are used to validate the proposed methodology. The structure of the cells in the rougher and cleaner banks deliver structures that are novel.

Groundfall accidents have been the leading cause of fatalities in the underground coal mining industry for many years. Statistics from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that approximately half of the victims of these fatal accidents were in an area where no devices had been installed to support the mine roof. This report was prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to provide guidance to operators of underground mines concerning the use of techniques that may help to keep miners from going under unsupported mine roof. The report is divided into two major sections. The first section reviews the findings from several areas of empirical research pertaining to strategies for convincing employees to avoid unsafe acts and/or adopt self-protective behaviors. The strategies are (1) incentives and feedback, (2) disciplinary actions, (3) training (primarily fear communications and behavioral modeling), and (4) nondirective techniques. This literature review has a broad focus and should be helpful in making decisions about how to encourage a wide variety of types of self-protective behaviors. The second major section of the report presents an analysis of each strategy's potential for keeping miners away from unsupported roof.

During the non-ferrous metal processing, the melting step under vacuum or under rarefied gas leads to volatile metal losses. It is the case of the metallurgical processing of the nickel-based, titanium-based or zirconium-based alloys where the evaporation losses don't allow a sufficient control of the alloy chemical composition. A theoretical approach has been carried out involving both a continuum description in the liquid phase and a molecular approach in the rarefied gas phase. The finite volume method is used in order to solve the coupled transport equationsin the liquid, whereas the Boltzmann equation is modelled by using a Monte Carlo method. At the liquid metal and metallic vapor interface, the volatilization and recondensation fluxes link up the two calculations. Simulation results are given for the melting and refining of reactive metals such as titanium alloys where the control of the chemical composition remains a major difficulty. The validity of the kinetic Langmuir's law is discussed for different operating conditions.

During the months of April and May 1992, the Phelps Dodge Hidalgo smelter underwent a major turnaround. This was the third such turnaround in the life of the facility which was commissioned in 1976. During the third furnace campaign, the smelter processed 5.2 million tons of concentrate producing 2.6 billion pounds of anode copper over a 7.5 year period. The critical path on the fifty-nine (59) day turnaround schedule was the reconstruction of the Outokumpo flash furnace which integrated some modifications with standard rebuild practices. Modifications included incorporation of horizontal cooling jackets throughout the furnace settler as well as the installation of castable refractory in the reaction and uptake shafts.

Recent results from electrochemical measurements demonstrate that trithiocarbonate (TTC) collectors are more readily oxidized to their corresponding dithiolates than the dithiocarbonate/xanthate (DTC) collectors. Based on the traditional analysis of collector adsorption, trithiocarbonates might then be expected to be effective for bulk sulfide mineral flotation. Previous bench-scale flotation research had shown that TTC collectors are very effective for the flotation of copper sulfide minerals and PGM (platinum group metal) sulfide minerals. More recently, the TTC collectors were evaluated for auriferous pyrite recovery in benchscale plant scale flotation testing in the United States and in plant tests at Anglogold in South Africa. TTC collectors were also applied in bench-scale testing of a PGM ore. In each case an improved separation efficiency was realized. Fundamental studies at the University of Utah examining the effect of collector structure (functional group, -O-CS2 versus .S-CS2), specifically with respect to auriferous pyrite flotation, are in progress. The effect of collector structure was evaluated with air as well as nitrogen as the flotation gas medium. Experimental techniques utilized included electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements to evaluate mineral hydrophobicity and infrared spectroscopy to explain collector adsorption phenomena at the mineral surface.

Visit to the Datsun Nissan Company's body pressing and assembly plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, and the Claremont-Danville Tunnel on 27th February, 1970. The excursion arranged for the 27th February to the Datsun Nissan motor car assembly plant at Rosslyn, near Pretoria, in the morning and the Claremont-Danville tunnel in the afternoon was well supported by some 43 members. The visitors were met at the factory by Mr Rademeyer, the Industrial Relations Manager, and members of his staff and were taken to the artisan training centre for light refreshments. There is a well-equipped training section with an air-conditioned lecture hall; we were told that such training facilities were important because of the cosmopolitan nature of the artisan staff. The visitors were divided into small parties and taken to the tool die and jig-making section, which is perhaps the key department for a factory of this nature. There the many dies for the presses in the body pressing section, as well as the complicated jigs for body welding are made. The technique for making the castings for the dies is interesting. A polystyrene model of the casting is embedded in moulding sand. In a neighbouring foundry molten metal is pressed into the headers and burns away the polystyrene, which leaves no residue, and this exactly fills the space occupied by the model. This rough casting is then machined in large copying machines (costing as much as Rl80 000). An exact plastic model of the surface of the pressing required, set up in juxtaposition to this casting is traversed by a master stylus which operates the slave milling cutter, thereby machining the surface to close tolerances. The machined casting is cleaned up by hand and finally finished in large spotting machines, using a blue dye to show up high spots, to the fine degree of accuracy required. The body pressing section was next visited. There the large number of pressed parts which make up a vehicle body are pressed out of special deep drawing steel plate. Some of the largest presses were capable of applying a pressure of 1 200 tons and cost as much as Rl85 000 each. The visitors then followed through to the assembly section where jigs are used to hold together the many pressings, which are then spot welded into body frames. The frames go to an assembly line where they are finished to the stage for painting. The continuous crawl painting assembly line carries the frames through all the stages of prime coating with zinc phosphate sprayed on in a tunnel, followed by immersion of the lower parts in a priming bath, then drying and spray painting and baking in tunnels. The body frames, after painting, join another assembly line, where the doors, upholstery and many fittings are attached. After this stage the completed bodies are lowered onto and attached to the chassis units which are largely assembled from imported parts (engines, transmission units, etc.). From the end of the line the completed cars are driven off to the trial track and then pass through a tunnel with powerful water sprays to detect leaks in the body work. The proportion of locally made parts is just on 45 per cent. An interesting aspect of the assembly organization is that, of the 140 or 160 cars completed each day there may be included some of each of the Datsun model as well as some Renault and Alfa Romeo models models which are assembled by this company. The change from one model to another several times a day does not present any difficulty to the organization. Each section of the assembly plant 'buys' the units from the preceeding section and 'sells' to the succeeding section. This means that the responsibility of each section ends when the unit is sold to the next section. The cost of repairing any faults found subsequently is charged to the section where it is found, which puts a powerful emphasis on meticulous inspections between sections to safeguard their costs. After the tour the parties assembled at the lecture hall where a lavish cold buffet luncheon was provided by the company. After luncheon Mr A. R. C. Fowler, on behalf of the Institute, thanked the Managing Director, Mr W. J. Wilson and his staff for this most interesting and well organized visit. The party then left for the Claremont-Danville tunnel. The tunnel is being driven by General Mining Federale Kontrakteurs through the Daspoort Range, Pretoria, to link the suburbs of Danville, near Iscor, and Claremont, which at present can only be reached by a nine mile detour. It is estimated that some 6000 vehicles per day will use the tunnel. Before entering the tunnel a short talk was given by Mr Ross who is in charge of operations. The study was intent on assessing the socio-economic impact of a zinc mine in South Africa through the application of people-centric digital tools using a case study research methodology. The global mining industry is undergoing significant technological shifts to modernize, improve operational sustainability, and align with the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) agenda. While the case study mine is a more modernized mine, continuous improvement around the ‘social’ pillar becomes critical, and to this end application of people-centered digital tools presented as the vehicle to understand community needs and impacts. Despite considerable annual corporate social investment by mines annually, the overall impact or social return on investment is marginally understood. Towards contributing to addressing this gap, digital ESG ‘social-related’ data gathering tools for mines decision-making were developed, including the training-needs assessment tool, community-social needs assessment, small, micro, and medium enterprise (SMME) communications and engagement tool, digital leadership competencies gap assessment tool, and change management blueprint, which further allowed for customization to the mining context. Hence, the novelty of this paper relates to applying digital tools to provide real-time information of the needs of a community, both socially and economically. The findings suggested that these digital tools enabled gathering of information for the establishment of regional and operational baselines towards enabling of social investment returns in relation to socio-economic transformation development interventions. These tools have been applied to a zinc mine context, with lessons and experiences obtained through this study, invaluable to the application of these digital tool in other mines in South Africa. The study was conducted in September 2023 across five host communities, surrounding the zinc mine, in the Northern Cape region, with 120 participants involved in the application of three relevant community-related digital tools, which included the training needs, community-social needs, and SMME communications and engagement tools. It was evident that the digital ESG tools could be used for data gathering for the mine’s informed decision-making and allowed for securing of insights on community needs in near real-time, and further proved practical for community use.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report considers, from a psychological perspective, the perceptual process by which miners recognize and respond to mining hazards. It proposes that if the hazard recognition skills of miners can be improved, mining accidents may be reduced to a significant degree. Prior studies of hazard perception in mining are considered, as are relevant studies from investigations of military target identification, pilot and gunnery officer training, transportation safety, automobile operator behavior, research into sensory functioning and visual information processing. A general model of perception is introduced, and selected concepts from the psychology of perception that are applicable to the detection of mining hazards are reviewed. Hazard recognition is discussed as a function of the perceptual cues available to the miner as well as the cognitive resources and strategies employed by the miner. The development of expertise in responding to hazards is related to individual differences in the experience, aptitude, and personality of the worker. Potential applications to miner safety and training are presented.

Acidic mine waters containing solubilized uranium have been observed in many uranium and some copper mines. In every case, the sulphide and iron oxidizing bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, was also present. This bacterium provides the ferric iron required to oxidize u+4, both by oxidizing available ferrous iron and by oxidizing pyrite or other available sulphide minerals. This latter oxidation also provides sulphuric acid and may increase extraction by exposing more uranium. The enhancement of bacterial activity and the results of some field tests are discussed.

"INTRODUCTION Barite is one of the major industrial minerals whose production has increased considerably in the last 10 years. In 1935 domestic production of barite was 218,075 tons and. had increased by 1944 to 515,136 tons. 3/ Most of the primary uses for barite and barite products were developed before 1935, so the increase in barite production reflects the growth of industry in general rather than any recent developments in barite technology.The principal uses for ground and crushed barrite are as a weighting agent in heavy drilling fluids, as a filler in rubber and other materials, as a pigment and extender in paints, and as a flux in glass melt. In addition, a considerable' quantity of barite serves as the raw material for the manufacture of lithopone and barium chemicals.Specifications for barrite vary widely and depend primarily on the use to which the material is put. The primary requisites for barite used in heavy drilling muds -are that it have a minimum specific gravity of 4.2 and be very,low in soluble salts. A minimun barium sulfate content of 92 percent may be specified; but this is less important than the gravity. 4/ In addition before consumption the material must be ground to '92 percent minus 325-mesh. 5/ Lithopone and chemical manufacturers require a minimum of 94 Percent barium sulfate, a maximum of 1.0 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of fluorine. 6/ Barite used as fillers in light-colored products should be of fairly high grade, but the filler used in dark products may be considerably lower grade.Glass barite should contain a minimum of 96 percent barium sulfate, not more than 3 percent moisture, a maxium of 0.2 to 0.4 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of titanium oxide. Particle size is a matter of some importance in glass barite, also. 7/"

The objectives of this research were: 1. to determine the stability relationships of coal mine roof rocks which are cut by fractures or intersecting joints with and without roof bolts, under various sets of conditions including horizontal formation pressures, inclination and coefficient of friction of joints, bolt loads, roof spans and rock properties; and 2. to develop criteria for the design of roof bolt sys terns for such roofs. The problem was studied by mathematical finite element models and by laboratory models. From the results of the mathematical and laboratory models, equations were derived to express the relationships listed above for cracked, single-layered roof beams and design tables for such beams are included. The analysis was then extended to include multi-layered cracked beams reinforced by roof bolts and a method for analyzing and designing bolting patterns for such roof rocks is presented.

Underground limestone mines generally lack air pressure monitoring procedures and instrumentation guidelines. The blasting industry also lacks an applicable source for air overpressure levels that are produced by blasting operations in underground mines. This became apparent during the development of a new underground limestone mine, where overpressure levels from production blasting needed to be estimated. During the development phase of the mine, it was imperative that newly constructed underground structures be capable of withstanding the overpressure produced by blasting. Therefore, a study was conducted to (1) identify and review any published studies for data that may be applicable, (2) identify the appropriate equipment required to record the overpressure levels, (3) determine the proper procedures for setting up the equipment and recording overpressure, and (4) provide an understanding of the nature of the air overpressure in a developing mine.

A gravimetric method for the determination of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane, and oxygen in blast furnace top gas is described. Nitrogen may be determined directly by volume measurement or by difference. The method is direct, permits continuous as sampling, and provides an averaged analysis over a selected range of sampling intervals from 1/2 to 24 hr or more. Neither expensive equipment nor specialized personnel are required. The method is suitable for routine analysis, and the results compare favorably with those obtained by established methods.

DURING the development of froth flotation for the treatment of sulphide ores, a certain amount of information was collected about a few of the nonmetallic minerals, and occasionally the gangue minerals in the sulphide ores showed an embarrassing tendency to float. However, for many years efforts were expended to develop reagents that would cause wetting and depression of these minerals. Among the nonmetallics, the minerals sulphur, graphite, and talc probably should be classified as 'natural floaters', and perhaps sericite. They respond to almost any type of flotation reagent, and their beneficiation by flotation had been attempted years ago. Flotation of sulphur is now common practice, and graphite was concentrated during the World War in many mills, most of which have now closed down. A talc mill has just been constructed, and another may soon be erected. Second to the 'natural floaters' come the 'easy floaters', cassiterite, fluorite, barite, mica, colloidal gangue, and paper pulp from white water of paper mills. That these materials responded to some of the early flotation reagents, as oleic acid, has long been known; occasional references to their behaviour are found in the very early flotation literature and in that of today. In general, however, nonmetallic minerals, valued at $2.00 to $15.00 per ton, have for a long time been regarded as cheap products and not worth much beneficiation. Consequently, only high-grade natural deposits suitable for direct mining and sale have been gouged out. Furthermore, the mining of these minerals has too frequently been in the hands of 'super-practical' men-men of no technical or other training, willing to work for a very low compensation. From the social standpoint, nonmetallics has been the field for small, untrained enterprisers with little money to spend on plant or equipment. But times have been changing. The impact of technically trained men on the old industry has revealed appalling losses and inefficien-cies and proved the value of processing materials discarded or avoided by the old regime.

The Soil-Foundation-Structure-Interaction (SFSI) problem involves Kinematic Soil- Foundation Interaction occurring during large (cyclic and permanent) ground deformations as well as Inertial Foundation-Structure Interaction occurring during shaking all of which take place while the soil and possibly structural properties degrade with time. The design of the deep foundations for liquefaction induced lateral spread loads include estimation of passive pressure applied by the liquefied material as well as the amount of anticipated displacement. Coupled analyses for SFSI problems that account for liquefaction induced lateral spread and their interaction with the deep foundation system can be performed using sophisticated numerical modeling techniques based on finite element and/or finite difference methods using computer programs such as FLAC or OPENSEES. Such complete SFSI analyses are very tedious and expensive and not feasible for most projects. In 2011, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) released guidelines for foundation loading and deformation due to liquefaction induced lateral spreading. This simpler prescriptive approach combines empirical and analytical methods through decoupled analyses using computer programs such as LPILE and SLOPE-W together with liquefaction induced lateral spread estimates based on published empirical equations. Pile group effects and pile caps are accounted for using a concept of super-pile. In this paper, we discuss the solution of the same lateral spreading related SFSI problem using computer program CGI-DFSAP (CGI-Deep Foundation System Analysis Program) based on the strain wedge theory that can account for liquefaction, lateral spreading, pile groups, pile caps and nonlinear behavior of piles in a more coupled manner to analyze the foundation system under the lateral spread loadings. CGI-DFSAP can be used to analyze piles in sloping ground conditions as well as piles beneath the abutments near a free-face slope. We have included Strain Wedge Model (SWM) solutions using CGI-DFSAP of several field and laboratory case studies of lateral spreading related to pile foundations. Finally, we have also included the SWM solution of one of the Caltrans (2011) example problems.

"In the last decade, the construction industry has witnessed significant changes in the project delivery systems and contractual relationships between the general contractors (GC) and Deep Foundation Specialty Contractors. The Deep Foundation industry, especially including industry specialty subcontractors, have experienced a significant increase in requests that project risks be transferred through contract documents to subcontractors and suppliers with a decrease in margins for the industry. GCs regularly revise their form subcontracts to take into account recent experiences/contractual trends and newly issued judicial precedent, an exercise that is less frequently undertaken by subcontractors and suppliers. These contradictory trends are at the base of the ethical analysis of subcontracts that comprises the subject matter of this paper. Using contracts as a risk management tool in order to mitigate the general contractor’s risks in the context of dynamic changes in the legislative environment will also be addressed. Furthermore, another possibility for risk mitigation for the industry is to actively promote the introduction of the latest technical developments into the contract documents.CONTRACTS’ ETHICSFor thousands of years, ethics have been a constant presence in our lives and have been debated by different branches of philosophy. "Introduction Many operators in western Canada, with a background in the minerals industry, talk of ""coal beneficiation"", whereas the coal industry generally uses the term ""coal preparation"" . The sophisticated cleaning circuits and thermal drying units found in western Canada makes the term beneficiation particularly appropriate. This chapter uses standard coal preparation terminology(l,2J and assumes general knowledge of coal preparation unit processes and equipment(3,4,5). The geologic setting and mining methods of western Canada, described elsewhere in this volume, present for preparation run-of-mine coals which have particular problems. As a result the cost of preparation is a higher proportion of the total minesite production costs than in other coal fields . Preparation requirements are determined by the types of coals being produced and the markets in which they are sold. Western Canadian coals have a low sulphur content and do not require cleaning on this account. Prepared coal from western Canada has to be shipped vast distances -to the Pacific Rim countries and Ontario in particular -and the savings in transport costs justify the high costs of preparation. Factors which dictate selection and operation of the preparation processes are: i) Market specifications and coal rank. ii) Size distribution of particles and particularly the liability of coal and refuse particles to degrade during handling and processing. iii) Quantity and characteristics of the associated refuse. iv) Washability characteristics (the distribution of particles by specific gravity within each size fraction). v) Surface characteristics of the fines. vi) Variability of the raw coal. Where the product (coal or discard) has a high fines content special consideration must be given to dewatering, the removal of surface moisture, to give acceptable handle ability characteristics. In the severe winter climate of the western foothills and mountains thermal drying is necessary to prevent freezing of washed coal in stockpiles and railcars."

For more than 20 years the author had the privilege of working closely on a number of R&D projects with Lucy Rosato and her team at CEZinc. Several of these projects were driven from the sustainability agenda that Lucy Rosato championed as an innovation leader that supported research collaborations. Highlights from this highly rewarding collaboration are to be presented in this paper. In particular we will deal with the following works-topics: (a) iron control via solvent extraction as alternative to jarosite precipitation; (b) production of high-density gypsum by controlled neutralization of simulated zinc plant process/waste waters; (c) selenium removal from weak acid solutions; (d) electrolyte purification by cementation; and (e) manganese control by oxidative precipitation with SO2/O2.

Hindered-settling column process has been used for the separation of mineral particles for many years. In this study, a model based on DEM (Discrete Element Method) was used to simulate the movements of particles in a settling column separation process. DEM model is capable of describing the motion of particles and calculating the impact forces between particle and particle, and particle and wall contact under various operating conditions. Drag force, rotation induced Magnus lift force, contact force and the gravitational force acting on individual particles were considered for establishing the mathematic models. The overall motion of the particles in water is satisfactorily simulated by the DEM, and the result shows good agreements with the result of lap-scale experiment.
