Advocate Mines Limited came into initial production on June 30, 1963, with an annual capacity in excess of 60,000 tons of high-quality chrysotile asbestos fihres, thus strengthening Canada's position in world production. The history of this development is traced from discovery through initial exploration, financing, orebody delineation and evaluation, pilot-plant production and product evaluation, construction of the plant, construction of deep?-sea shipping facilities, provision for a closed shipping season, and provision for the remoteness and for the lack of services, through to realization of full production capacity. The many unique aspects of the project are given special attention, particularly in the light of the first year of full-capacity operation. The marketing of the products in a highly competitive world market is reviewed, with special emphasis on product evaluation, quality control and the shipping of high-quality products to consumers throughout the world. "Prediction of a variable sulphur content in Cape Breton seams is important for planning the production of a highgrade metallurgical coal. Two extrapolation methods (Kriging and a version of Universal Kriging) to predict sulphur content in blocks of coal before mining are presented and applied to the New Lingan Mine reserves in the Harbour seam. The uncertainty of the predicted values is expressed by using standard deviations. Some statistical results for the Phalen seam, which occurs about 400 ft below the Harbour seam, are presented for comparison. The two mathematical models consist of two sets of equations which have been used in computer algorithms. Some limitations of the present approach and possibilities for further statistical work are indicated."

Resin bolt performance is dependent on the size of the resin annulus, the difference between the hole and bolt radii. The vast majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus of 0.125 or 0.188 inches. Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuluses of 0.125 and 0.095 inch resisted an average of 2.25tons per grouted inch, with no significant variation. Resin loses to simulated fractures increased as annulus size decreased, with a minimum loss of35% and a maximum loss of 60% associated with0.188 and 0.095 inch annuluses, respectively.

During Phase IV of our Landfill Mine Stabilization project at a coal burning power generating station, it was determined that a coal barrier pillar separating two abandoned areas of the deep mine had to be breached prior to expansion of the ash disposal area. The proposed plan by the landfill design engineers involved using a high pressure jet cutting tool to cut a slot to allow water flow to an existing industrial waste water treatment facility. Our plan proposed using explosives to breach the pillar from the surface reducing earth disturbance in a high quality watershed while reducing the project cost and accelerating the project time schedule. Many issues surfaced with the proposed change of using explosives. There were a number of lessons learned from this case history and is the primary basis of this paper.

High-grade iron ore fines rejected from the DRI plants (>96%Fe2O3) were isothermally reduced in 30-60%CO/H2 gas mixtures at 973-1273K. The freshly reduced reaction products were then subsequently carburised in either Hz/CO or H2/CO/S mixtures at 823-1 073K for 30-120 min. The thermogarvimetric technique was used to follow up both of reduction and carburisation reactions as a function of time. The carburised samples were characterized by X-ray and Mossbauer techniques. Chemical and carbon analyses were also applied. The influence of temperature and gas composition on the reduction behavior was investigated. The calculated values of apparent activation energy, application of gas-solid mathematical formulations were correlated with the microstructures to predict the reduetion mechanism. The influenee of carburization time, temperature, CO contents in H2/CO or H2/CO/S were investigated. A conversion extent of Fe to Fe3C was taken as a measurable index for the efficiency of carburization rcaction under the different experimental conditions.

1. The investigation shows that the Wilder (locally known as the Bon Air No. 2) is the only known bed of commercial importance in Putnam County, although at least 5 coal horizons are known. All of the coal production now reported comes from this bed, which is found In a basin with no known coal outcrops. Further drilling in the east end of the basin should disclose the location of the eastern end of the axial trough and the lateral extent of the basin in Putnam County and adjoining areas in Cumberland County. Continuity of this deposit with that in the area in Putnam County north of Monterey is not conclusively established but may exist. 2 Known (measured plus indicated) reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot in place, are estimated at 29 million tons, as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 28 million tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. All born coal reserves in Putnam County me under less than 400 feet of overburden.

In the mining industry, a lack of inquisitiveness may lead to a blissful ignorance but it certainly will not increase efficiencies. While one may claim necessity is the mother of invention, questioning and analyzing how methods and systems can be improved is the catalyst to discovering necessities. Understandably, when working in the middle of Canada?s oil sands, where trucks operate around the clock every day of the year, it is nearly impossible to pull the nose from the grindstone long enough to provide thorough analysis. But, fortunately, some manufacturers/inventors have assisted by examining the process and the ensuing headaches within this application.

The Claim Point chromite deposits are at tidewater near the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula in southwestern Alaska, The United States Geological Survey had a field party in the region from July until September 1940 under P. W. Guild, assistant geologist; maps and geological data were assembled and made available to the Bureau of Mines. A preliminary investigation of the deposits at Claim Point by the senior author during July 1941 was followed by surface sampling and core drilling to determine the quantity and grade of the ere, The Geological Survey was represented at the project by George O. Gates, geologist. Cores were checked and the structural data revealed by drill cores were interpreted. The principal chromite deposits have been sampled and delimitated by trenching and core drilling. Other deposits were trenched and sampled but were too small or too low-grade to warrant core drilling.

Statistical metallurgical plant trials are becoming more widespread, as a valuable tool for increasing plant profitability. Generally, a single parameter like metal recovery varies under the trial condition while all other variables such as average metal feed grade or average metal concentrate grade are equal for the two test conditions during the period of the test. Metal recovery is usually the measured variable because concentrate grade is fixed by smelter terms, and plants operate to maximise recovery at the required concentrate grade. However, in all flotation plants there is a relationship between concentrate grade and metal recovery, and under the same conditions increasing one results in a decrease in the other. At MMGÆs Rosebery Mine the zinc concentrate produced is generally above smelter specifications, so zinc concentrate grade can vary during a test. During trialling of magnetic conditioning in the Rosebery zinc circuit, the difference in both zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade were analysed. The analysis of changes in zinc grade and recovery during the trial raised some interesting questions about the relationship between concentrate grade and recovery. A paired statistical method was developed and tested to combine in each pair the change in concentrate grade and recovery in a single result that could be analysed by a paired t test. This method was found to be very sensitive to combined, varying changes in concentrate grade and/or metal recovery. It was also evaluated on plant test results from another flotation plant to verify its applicability in other plants. CITATION:Long, G, Taylor, S and Lumsden, B, 2012. "Since early 2015, the price of nickel has dropped from the region of US$6/pound to current levels of around US$4.60/pound (March 2017), reflecting several market factors, but principally due to lower demand from China. Under such conditions, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain operating costs. In addition, labor and energy costs will continue to rise, while nickel ore grades will likely continue to drop. All major companies now accept the need for climate change action and consequently efforts are being made towards lowering carbon-based emissions. Nevertheless, meeting these challenges can also contribute to higher operating costs without parallel innovative developments - which at the same time, under current conditions, major companies are tending to curtail. In this paper, several productivity improvement opportunities to reduce unit operating costs at nickel sulphide and nickel laterite plants are reviewed. Opportunities include: (a) process technology and energy-type selection, production capability, optimization of process intensity and implementation of newer technologies; (b) improved productivity, equipment availability including maintenance best practice; (c) energy savings and recovery opportunities and use of energy surveys and, (d) process modeling and improved scheduling. Such improvements along with an uptick seen in nickel demand going forward should better position the world nickel industry.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an essential metal to modern society, primarily through its use as an important ingredient in stainless steel. Thus, stainless steel finds vital applications in food preparation facilities, as well as important uses in transportation and industrial applications. Canada has always played an important role in nickel production and nickel metallurgy. In the 1940s and 1950s, Canada supplied over 90% of the world’s nickel. However, this proportion has declined considerably to around 10% of the world nickel supply today. Still, Canada remains an important nickel supplier and contributor to nickel extractive technology. Due to the importance of nickel to society, nickel demand is expected to continually rise. On the other hand, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain production costs amid languishing nickel prices. While demand projections show nickel growth, there are uncertainties in actual levels of future market growth. Ore grades are dropping, while labour and energy costs, which are key cost contributors are rising, hence efforts to lower production costs will generally require innovative approaches."

It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While there have been many studies aimed at understanding total dust concentrations and silica content associated with different mining conditions (e.g., locations/occupations within a mine, cutting methods, geologic strata), little research has been completed to more comprehensively characterize respirable dust (i.e., by distributions of particle composition, size or shape). For such analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) may represent a powerful tool. This article is a preliminary investigation of SEM-EDX to characterize respirable dust from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. Samples were collected from various locations in the study mine, and individual dust particles were identified and classified by mineral type. A continuous personal dust monitor was also used to estimate respirable dust concentrations during sampling. This data was compared to particle densities observed under the SEM. Dust is generally defined as small, solid particles with an effective diameter between 1 and 100 µm. In underground coal mines, dust is produced by a variety of activities such as coal and rock cutting, materials handling, haulage and from a variety of materials. While the coal itself is primarily made up of organic carbon, it is estimated that as much as 60 percent of coal mine dust consists of mineral matter, including clays, metal oxides and sulfides, carbonates, quartz, phosphates and heavy minerals (WHO, 1997). Mineral matter may be ingrained in the coal seam or associated with adjacent or interlying strata, and may also be contributed by specific activities such as rock dusting. When dust is generated or made airborne, suspended particles tend to settle slowly with gravitational forces, but can remain airborne for extended periods of time depending on environmental conditions such as air velocity (Courtney et al., 1986) and particle properties such as size (ISO, 1995; WHO, 1999). Thus, miners working underground are routinely subject to occupational dust exposures ? with highly variable characteristics between and even within mines.

The commercial life of a mineral product can be long, but like hitech electronic and software products that soar in sales one day to become obsolete and forgotten a few months or years, mineral products have a life cycle. They are invented, commercialized and eventually decline and disappear from commerce. Diatomite and perlite are produced from mined minerals, but almost none of the products in these industries spring from the earth in finished form. Straight calcined diatomite was invented over 100 years ago and flux calcined diatomite just a few years later. The expansion properties of perlite were discovered and first exploited about 75 years ago. Some applications for diatomite have disappeared or currently face competition from newer products. Dry cleaning was once the second-largest application for diatomite but disappeared over 30 years ago. Both the beer and wine filtration markets for diatomite face increased competition from membrane filters. A pipeline of new, proprietary products is critical to the future of the industry.

Americans are taking a more critical view of various environmental laws because the effects of those laws are becoming more pervasive and intrusive, according to William Perry Pendley. And Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt is seemingly so unpopular in the West, he no longer campaigns there for Clinton Administration policies. Pendley is president and chief legal officer of the Mountain States Legal Foundation, a public service, non-profit law association that takes on property rights cases for people who cannot afford representation. He was one of the luncheon speakers at the 101st Northwest Mining Association meeting, held in Spokane, WA in early December.

Three filter cloth fabrics commonly used in drains for coal waste embankments were tested by the Bureau of Mines for clogging behavior and deterioration under simulated field conditions. The objective was to provide guidelines for the mining industry for the proper selection and use of filter cloths to assure safer embankments at mine waste disposal sites. The filter cloths were tested with three coal waste samples in stand-pipes used to simulate coal mine waste disposal environments. Two of the cloths showed a tendency to become clogged with fines from the wastes. One waste caused clogging by precipitating an iron-silicon compound on the test cloths. No apparent cloth deterioration resulted from exposures to the simulated coal waste environments. (The exposures ranged from 2 to 12 months.) In other tests, exposures to waters in the pH range of 2 to 12 and to reagents used in coal-preparation plants resulted in insignificant or no deterioration, as measured by tensile strength. However, long exposures to sunlight (ranging from 4.6 to 6 months) caused major deterioration in two of the cloths (86-and 98-pct losses in tensile strength) and slight deterioration in the third cloth (9-pct loss in strength).

The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95.9.5.5 mt (105.770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/ml (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper. 1.10 a lead and 11.06% zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1% Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89% copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) ,old. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6.Mmt (1.76 million it). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.
