El presente trabajo describe la geología del depósito minero Candelaria, perteneciente al distrito minero de Castrovirrey, Huancavelica. Dicho depósito está asociado a la actividad ígnea de centros y domos volcánicos del terciario medio o superior, mientras que la veta Candelaria está constituida por tetrahodrita, enargita, boulangerita, bournouita, jamesonita, esfalerita, galena, bismutinito, chalcopirita y como minerales de ganga, pirita, cuarzo, barita, oropimente, regelgar, marcasita, arsenopirita, así como hay lazos cimoidea. De otro lado, las intersecciones de vetas favorecen la mineralización y el Domo Volcánico Candelaria es favorable a la mineralización al igual que los tufos.

A detailed mineralogical and liberation study was performed on the iron ore mill products from the Scully concentrator of Wabush Mines, Newfoundland. Automated image analysis techniques were applied to deter-mine grain size distribution and liberation of all mineral components of the ore. As a result of the study it was indicated that iron recovery can be improved and the Mn minerals reduced in the iron ore concentrate by (a) increasing spiral middlings, (b) regrinding the middlings, and (c) separating the Mn minerals from the iron minerals in the reground middlings.

O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver um modelo matemático capaz de prever as propriedades mecânicas de uma barra redonda laminada a quente em aço ao carbono, em termos de limite de escoamento e limite de resistência, considerando equações consagradas na literatura e dados industriais de processo. Foram utilizados os parâmetros de processo da laminação, tais como temperatura, deformação, taxa de deformação e tempo entre passes, e a composição química do aço SAE 1020. Os resultados calculados pelo modelo apresentaram boa concordância com os resultados medidos nas amostras, com diferença percentual de 3,34% para limite de escoamento e 2,14% para limite de resistência, além de mostrar-se adequado para previsão da evolução microestrutural, considerando as equações de recristalização estática e dinâmica. A utilização deste modelo pode levar à redução de custos com ensaios de tração e atender à demanda crescente dos clientes por estas informações nos certificados de qualidade.

Essa contribuição técnica mostra a evolução do processo da Linha de Recozimento Contínuo de Chapas (LRCC#1) da Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), na produção de laminados a frio sem revestimento para o segmento de mercado de tambores. A CSN vinha ao longo do tempo perdendo esse mercado devido principalmente a problemas de qualidade, como oxidação quando realizava a laminação de encruamento seca e, por outro lado quando processava o material com laminação de encruamento com óleo protetivo, ocorria no processo do cliente de cura a incompatibilidade com a tinta e vernizes nas aplicações mais críticas como acondicionamento alimentício, farmacêuticos e outros, cujos requisitos de qualidade rigorosos são exigidos contra qualquer tipo de contaminação. Desenvolveu-se um produto que associado ao controle de sua quantidade e a microgeometria da superfície da tira, resultou na lubricidade necessária para a continuidade operacional e atendeu aos requisitos de qualidade desejados.

This study compares the use of an aminophosphonate chelating resin Purolite S950 and a sulphonic acid strong cation exchange resin Purolite C160H to recover nickel and cobalt from the synthetic bioleach solutions. Batch adsorption of metal citrate is performed as a function of metal citrate concentration (15~2000 mg/L) and solution pH (0.01M and 0.1M citric acid). The adsorption mechanism as inferred from the fit to Langmuir (LM), Freundlich (FM) and Redlich-Peterson (RP) models demonstrates that nickel citrate adsorbed onto C160H appears monolayer in comparison to that adsorbed onto S950 exists multilayer. In contrast, cobalt citrate adsorption onto both C160H and S950 agrees with the LM model. The results have shown that loading capacities of nickel and cobalt citrate onto C160H are 60 and 65 mg/g whereas those observed onto S950 are 16mg/g and 6 mg/g respectively. These are achieved in metal citrate prepared in 0.1 M citric acid. Resin regeneration is conducted in using 2 M nitric acid solution. The results show high efficiency of nickel and cobalt citrate elution from Purolite C160H. Findings from this study suggest Purolite C160H is a suitable adsorbent for recovering nickel and cobalt from bioleaching solutions.

O objetivo do trabalho foi reduzir a instabilidade do processo de produção da barra chata série de 1.1/2"x5/8" á 1.3/4"x1/4" no primeiro trem contínuo da linha leve de produção de barras e perfis. Esta instabilidade ocorria principalmente pela utilização de um passe quadrado onde requeria maior acompanhamento operacional e resultava em passes posteriores de menores dimensões tendo dificuldade no controle de laço em um trecho de calha com Pinch Roll (rolo puxador) em função das baixas reduções. O estudo foi realizado com auxílio de um software de laminação seguindo a teoria do alargamento de Ekelund e coleta de amostras reais das barras laminadas para verificação dimensional. Com a alteração do processo substituindo o passe quadrado que é um passe gerador de defeitos e de difícil controle operacional por um passe de borda, conseguimos melhorar sua estabilidade tendo grandes impactos positivos na qualidade superficial do produto final através também do aumento das reduções posteriores. Também conseguimos aumentar a disponibilidade do laminador com a redução das interrupções e sucatas causadas pela instabilidade do processo e reduzimos o tempo de câmbio dentro da família desta barra chata.

Vertically dipping lenses of nickel-copper ore at Dumbarton Mines Limited are being mined by a modified blasthole stoping method. The principal access to the mine is provided by a 15-degree decline, which, in conjunction with the use of ramps and declines for secondary access, maximizes the accessibility and mobility of trackless mining equipment. Sublevels are driven in ore on 80-foot vertical intervals and subsequently the ore, ranging in thickness from 15 to 30 feet, is slashed to its limits by a procedure of face sampling and test holing. Two longhole drill jumbos are used to drill off 40-foot vertical slices above and below these levels. Following blasting, the ore falls by gravity to the 500-foot horizon, where it is removed from drawpoints by load-haul-dump units and transported by truck to the main orepass. The rock is crushed to minus 3-4 inches and conveyed to surface by a 30-inch-wide wire rope suspended conveyor. This is achieved in two flights, a lower one of 290 feet and a main flight of 2260 feet. All aspects of the mining operation are discussed in the paper, including ventilation, services and safety.

"Spent auto-catalyst is a promising secondary resource of platinum group metals (PGMs), which are being extensively used in automobiles catalytic converters to control the hazardous gaseous emissions (CO, NOx and hydrocarbons). Several pyro or hydrometallurgical routes has been employed to recover PGMs from such spent materials but there is no proper process for recovering the other constituents metals. Therefore, it causes the loss of other major constituents like, Al and Mg along with rare earth metal Ce. In the present study, we investigate the dissolution of Al and Mg using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) roasting followed by a sulfuric acid (H2SO4) leaching; thereby concentrating the PGMs and Ce in leached residues. The effect of roasting temperature, time and amount of NaOH were varied. Subsequently, the dissolution behavior of metals in H2SO4 as a function of acid concentration was investigated from the roasted samples. At an optimal condition for roasting at 600°C with 1:1 NaOH-to-catalyst ratio and 60 min duration, the maximum of Al and Mg were dissolved in 1 M H2SO4 solution at ambient temperature (~25°C). Thus obtained leached residues containing enriched PGMs and Ce content can be treated separately for the recovery of these high-value metals.INTRODUCTION Spent auto-catalyst has been considered as a potential resource for recovering the platinum group metals (PGMs) (Jha et al., 2013). The commonly used auto-catalyst is made of cordierite (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2) in which the chloro complexes of PGMs are impregnated onto the surfaces of porous washcoat of alumina substrate (Aberasturi et al., 2011). The average concentration of PGMs in ore are 2-4 g/ton for Pt, 7-2 g/ton for Pd and 0.2-0.5 g/ton for Rh, whereas, an individual catalytic converter weighing about 1 - 2 kg contains on average 1.56 g Pt, 0.62 g Pd and 0.156 g Rh (Upadhyay et al., 2013). Moreover, recovery of PGMs from spent auto-catalyst offers other advantages like, simple process, low cost and less pollution, as compared to recovery from primary resources (Dong et al., 2015).Therefore, technologies to recover PGMs from spent auto-catalyst has become attractive in the recent past and their recycling contribution has been accounted for 35% Pt, 26% Pd and 36% Rh of the quantity consumed in the production of auto-catalysts (Johnson Matthey, 2016)."

O desenvolvendo da indústria de eletroeletrônicos associada ao barateamento dos produtos tem reduzido a vida útil de equipamentos levando a uma geração elevada de resíduos de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos (REEE). Um componente desse resíduo são as placas de circuito impresso, que possuem em sua composição altos teores de metais, que podem ser recuperados através de processos de reciclagem. O presente trabalho busca caracterizar placas mãe de computador, determinando sua quantidade de material orgânico, cerâmico e metálico. As placas foram direcionadas para cominuição, que foi realizada em moinho de facas com grelha de 9mm, seguida por um moinho de martelos, atingindo uma granulometria menor que 2mm. A amostra foi então quarteada, para uma maior homogeneização e passou por ensaio de digestão em água régia. O licor resultante foi diluído para determinação do teor dos metais Ag, Al, Au, Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Sn, e Zn utilizando espectrometria de emissão óptica por indução de plasma (ICP-OES). O sólido filtrado, também resultante da digestão em água régia, passou por um ensaio de perda ao fogo a 800°C por uma hora, para determinar o teor de material orgânico. Os resultados indicaram que o Cu é o metal de maior concentração com 22,5% na placa de circuito impresso e que a mesma possui 43,7% de metais, 31,9% de polímeros e 24,4% de cerâmicas. A prata representa 0,04% dos metais e sua obtenção será realizada na forma de nanopartículas a partir de rotas hidrometalúrgicas.

The non-isothermal magnetization roasting process and isothermal magnetization roasting process of siderite ore were investigated using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and a real-time infrared gas analyzer. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to analyze the characteristics of samples. The results showed that the decomposition degree and decomposition rate of siderite ore were vitally affected by heating rate and roasting temperature. It was determined that A1 reaction model (f(α) = 1 − α) and A3/2 reaction model (f(α) = (3/2)(1 − α)[−ln(1 − α)]1/2) were the most probable mechanism function of the non-isothermal decomposition process and isothermal decomposition process, respectively. The phase transformation and decomposition mechanism during the roasting process were evaluated. Siderite decomposed in the process of magnetization roasting, released CO and CO2, and transformed into strongly magnetic magnetite. The SEM images highlighted that as the decomposition progressed, the structure of roasted samples was destroyed, and an increasing number of cracks and pores emerged on the surface, which is advantageous to the following grinding process.

"With the increase of shaft excavation depth, the thickness of the shaft lining increases sharply. It is difficult to reduce thickness of lining effectively by improving high-strength concrete performance. The concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is that surrounding rock plays a certain role in tunnel support. The solution should be to find the correct relationship between shaft lining thickness and rock strength, which is related with the interaction between the surrounding rock and concrete lining. The plane strain mechanics model is introduced to calculate lining thickness. Shaft lining design of Cixi Colliery in China is completed with the mechanics-based method proposed in this study. The lining design is verified through numerical simulation and field monitoring. The simulation results show that the maximum mises stress is located at the inner edge of the shaft lining. The increase of lining thickness cannot effectively reduce concrete grade. The monitoring results indicate that a lining design thickness of 900mm with C60 concrete, is safe and reliable in the shaft over 1000metres.This analytical design method can well be referenced in similar deep shaft projects.INTRODUCTION The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), thought to have helped revolutionize the modern tunneling method, is the most extensive design philosophy and construction principle in today's tunnel engineering. It began to attract attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher in Austria[1]. NATM was originally developed for tunneling in depth and in high situ-stress conditions in the Alps. The history of sequential excavation was reviewed, which highlights the progress of tunnel design and construction in Europe after NATM[2]. Structural conditions were introduced into the equilibrium of tunnels in NATM, and the additional force was estimated to stabilize the excavation of the tunnel[3].From the perspective of applied mechanics, there was no accuracy theory to explain the interaction between the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground. "SUMMARYElectron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide direct evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate in the Cr(VI) glutathione redox reactions. These results indicate a new mechanism for the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione in relationship to cellular environment and suggest that synergistic reactions of Cr(V) and GS· might be responsible for the (unexpected) increase in the Cr(VI)-induced DNA-strand breaks at high glutathione levels.INTRODUCTIONWhile the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione (GSH) is thought to be a critical' step in the pathogenesis of the Cr(VI)-exposure related carcinogenesis1- 4, the exact reduction mechanism is not yet understood. Her~ we present spin-trap ESR evidence for the formation of the GS· radical, and a definitive ESR detection of an isolable cr(V)-GSH intermediate in Cr(VI)-GSH reactions.MATERIALS. AND METHODSESR spectra were obtained at X-band (-9.7 GHz) using a Bruker ER200D ESR spectrometer. The magnetic field was calibrated with a self-tracking NMR Gaussmeter (Bruker, Model ER035M) and the microwave frequency was measured with a Hewlett-Packard (Model 5340A) frequency counter. The spin probes, a-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide) -N -tert-butylnitrone (4-POBN) and 5,5-dimethyl~1-pyrroline-1-ox1de (DMPO) were purchased from Aldrich, K2Cr201 from Fisher and used without further purification. Extraction of gold and silver from two refractory concentrates using cyanide and bromine reagents was reported at the 12th International Precious Metal Conference (1). The objective of this paper is to present the gold extraction, recovery, and economics for two refractory concentrates using cyanide and bromine reagents. Gold extractions for cyanide leaching (24- 48 hours) and bromine leaching (6 hours) were the same and ranged from 94% to 96%. Gold recoveries from bromine pregnant solutions using carbon adsorption, ion exchange, solvent extraction, and zinc and aluminum precipitation methods, were better than 99.9%. A preliminary economic analysis indicates that chemical costs? for cyanidation and bromine process are $9.50 and $10.50, respectively per ton of calcine processed.

J. H. HEGINBOTHAM, a, metallurgist of the General Engineering Co., talked on "Current Milling Practice at Kirkland Lake," at the December meeting of the Utah Section. The ore is enough alike through the whole district so that some generalizations and comparisons may be made. The question as to whether or not the flotation process should be used in the flowsheet for extracting gold by cyanide solutions is still being vigorously debated, and it will seemingly need some years for a definite answer to be given. Most of the gold is either free, though much of it is finely dispersed in quartz, or occurs with pyrite. At times there may be 2 per cent of telluride compounds in the ore, but the amount of gold telluride present is small and has not been definitely established. It has been shown by Dr. Haultain and others that though gold tellurides may be so finely disseminated that it is necessary to grind the ore exceedingly fine, the compounds themselves are not difficultly soluble. (An increase in temperature helps to dissolve tellurides, and also to settle pulps.) It is likely that if the ore were ground through 400 mesh, practically all of the gold would be soluble. Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35°C (95°F) [1]. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by >5.6°C (10°F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35°C (95°F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy. INTRODUCTION The apparent temperature inside an occupied RA could be significantly affected by the surrounding environment’s thermal conditions, such as mine air temperature and mine strata temperature. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and air velocity. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures. Depending on factors such as geographic location and season, mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata, temperatures can vary significantly [2]. RAs located in cold mines may pass the 96-hour 35°C (95°F) AT limit test that poses a challenge for RAs located in hot mines. One solution in these cases is that the occupancy of the RA could be derated (i.e., the RA occupancy could be reduced) to ensure the AT limit is not reached. However, this would require mines to purchase additional RAs to accommodate all personnel in the mine. For mines with high temperatures (above 26.7°C or 80°F), the occupancy might have to be reduced so much that the necessary number of additional RAs would be impractical. In these cases, RA cooling systems could provide a solution.

The methodology for describing the geochemistry of elements in a coal seam have been developed. This has been applied to the Rosebud Coal Seam, which is an economically important member of the subbituminous coals of the Fort Union Formation in Eastern Montana. The method development has involved a detailed study of two popular techniques for determining the metal geochemistry of coal, namely, whole coal analyses and coal physical fractionation. The mathematically contrived element associations (whole coal analyses technique) and the element concentration trends in the float and sink fractions (physical fractionation technique) are considered to lead to only qualitative conclusions concerning the chemical associations of the elements in coals. Additionally, the processes taking place with the coal during low temperature ashing in an oxygen plasma are experimentally investigated and shown to be of sufficeint extent that the use of such low temperature ash for deciphering element geochemistry is questionable. The method developed in this study is a chemical fractionation that involves the sequential leaching of coal with water, 0.5 N HC1, 3 N HC1, 2 N HNO3, and 48% HF. These leach solutions are shown to selectively dissolve the predominate inorganic phases, sulfates, Ca and Mg carbonates, Fe sulfides and K alumino-silicates and quartz, respectively. These phases were identified with the use of XRD, SEM, EM and leaches (water and 0.3 N HC1) of whole coal and low temperature ash. The incorporation of the anion-exchange step in the leaching scheme was investigated and was observed to warrant further study of such intensity to be, at the time, unuseable. The use of this sequential leaching technique on several coal samples from the same seam generates element concentration trends that can be quantitatively interpreted with respect to the chemical associations of the minor and trace metals in the coal seam. The properties of the various seams of economic importance in the Fort Union Formation in Eastern Montana are compiled and presented. The subsequent conclusion is that there is not a large variation in the properties of these coal seams and that the variations within the Rosebud are within one order of magnitude. The chemical fractionation technique, investigated in this study, was applied to composite tipple samples of the Rosebud seam. Each composite sample represented 76,800 tons of coal. A minimum of 32% of the Ca and Mg are present as separate water soluble sulfates. An excess of the sulfate ion in the water extracts shows the predominating influence of the ion exchange capacity of the organic compounds in the coal. Based upon the CO content of the coal and the HC1 leachate data, 25 to 30% of the alkaline earth elements exist as separate carbonates and the remainder are associated with the organic compounds. The small fraction of the illite that dissolves in the HC1 and HNO3 leachates accounts for the K and Al. Slight dissolution of the pyrite in the HCl solvent occurs, the small amounts of Li and As do not relate to any known phase and Mn is present as a separate carbonate phase. Fe and a significant amount of the As exist in the pyrite that is dissolved in the HNO. Se is equally partitioned between the pyrite and the organic compound~. Most of the trace elements are found in the HF solutions. Li, V, and Cr were interpreted to be associated with the clay minerals (kaolinite and illite). Ni and Pb appear to be present as separate phases and 50% of the Hg is HF soluble but is not chemically related to any known inorganic phase.

Abstract - Detailed crystal-chemical study of iron and manganese oxides and some other minerals from low-temperature hydrothermal deposits in a newly discovered inactive mound in the TAG hydrothermal field were used to determine the precipitation sequence of mineral phases during lowtemperature processes and their post-sedimentary transformations. Particles of primary sedimentary X-ray amorphous proto-ferrihydrite with high silica content were replaced in situ by nontronite, ferrihydrite, or goethite during alteration. Ferrihydrite is the only proto-hematite phase. The transformation of the iron minerals, related to change in the physicochemical environment, is an important characteristic of low-temperature hydrothermal processes. The occurrence of hydrogenetic Fe vernadite and Mn feroxyhyte in the uppermost part of low-temperature deposits and bottom sediments near the base of the mound is evidence for cessation of low-temperature hydrothermal processes. Among the investigated mineral phases, goethite, nontronite, and hematite are stable in reduced sediments only.

By the micronization-milling of the material, the size and the structure of its particles are changed and it comes to the increasing of the potential energy of the system as well as to the chem-ical activity of the material what is the result of an increased free surface and of the concentration of the grate defects, that is of the internal energy of the system. Controlling the process of the micronization and by purpose directing of the new characteristics of the activated materials, we can have the positive effects and use them in more technologies. Talc is important nonmetallic mineral raw material that is widely used as either the basic raw material, or as filler. This has stimulated its technological investigation, as well as the investigation of its physical-chemical characteristics. In this paper are shown experimentally reached results of the physical-chemical characteristics of the talc during the process of the micronization in high energetic mill. In this paper, the optimum conditions of miconization of talc in high-energy-speed rotary mill and its influence micronization on a degree of Fe2O3recovery by hydrometallurgical methodes, are presented. The X-ray analysis of the obtained products showed that high quality talc with low content of can be obtained by these physical-chemical processes In this paper, the principles and application or fine and ultra-fine grinding high-energy attriton mill with small balls, enabling fast, efficient grinding, low energy consumption, short grinding time and easy handling will be described.

En Perú, la industria minera es una importante contribuyente al crecimiento económico del país, pero también genera una cantidad considerable de residuos. Determining the origins of air overpressure has been a long-debated topic within the explosives engineering community. Historically, it has been accepted that the initial face movement gave rise to air displacement, resulting in an air overpressure pulse. Later research proposed that the air overpressure pulse resulted from the shockwave rapidly propagating through and impacting the quarry face. Most recently, researchers have derived that air overpressure is associated with the gas phase from which a gaseous product from explosives rapidly pours out the quarry face under high pressure. Significant research has strongly indicated that the time at which the air overpressure pulse exits the face fails to coincide with either the arrival of the shockwave at the free face or the initial face movement. Research has consistently shown that the shockwave arrival at the face occurs before the air overpressure pulse leaves the face. Therefore, to best determine which blast mechanism contributed to the initial air overpressure pulse, testing was aimed at verifying the precise time at which the air overpressure exited the faces compared to when the face first moved. This research describes tests using scaled concrete blocks, which provided the ability to control the key parameters necessary for the research to be successfully concluded. Black powder was selected as the energetic material to eliminate the production of the detonation wave while still inducing other gas-producing effects. The components evaluated were air blast arrival times in front of the face, the initial movement of the blast face, the precise initiation time of the blast hole, timing of pressurization within the rock mass (between borehole and face, or adjacent borehole), and the speed of sound in the air. A detailed timeline was created which portrays the actions within the blast to promote an understanding of the sequencing of events. The results showed that the initial face movement occurred at 17.57 milliseconds (ms) while the calculated time at which the air overpressure exited the face occurred at 7.07 ms. The large disparity continues to reaffirm the premise that the origin fails to coincide with the air pressure pulse. Average pressurization through the block occurred at a rate of 341.23 feet per second (104.15 meters per second) which resulted in the gas release pulse being calculated to exit the face between 4.41 and 6.21 ms. This pulse correlates more accurately with the air overpressure origin timing which will be the focus of continued research. Knowing the precise origin of blast-induced air overpressure will assist in being able to better control it through appropriate blast design.
