Three of the five primary aluminum producers in the Pacific Northwest have facilities in the region to make aluminum mill products. Only one of the three, however, produces a variety of shapes and forms. The principal reason for the lag in development of an aluminum mill products industry was found to be transportation cost. The long range outlook is for expansion, based mainly on growth of the western market for aluminum used in construction, containers and packaging, electrical applications, diesel trucks, mobile homes, and irregation pipe. Consumption of western aluminum mill products in 1985 is projected at 1.1 million tons, compared with estimated consumption of 250,000 tons in 1961.

There are discussed the possibilities of using of flotation tailings of platinum-copper-nickel sulfide ores of the Norilsk region for the preparation of backfill mixture instead of a specially produced rock and binder materials to reduce the cost of stowing operations and impact on the environment. It is shown that due to the presence in the tailings of flotation up to 10% of sulfide sulphur, which reduces the strength of the fill materials, and more than 1 g/t PGM it is necessary the preliminary extraction of the sulfides in the product for further processing that give an opportunity to reduce the losses of valuable components. It is shown that by the flotation of the current tailings it is possible to extract 91% of sulfide sulphur, 60% of palladium and 30% platinum in 17% sulfide concentrate containing 2.1 g/t palladium, and to reduce the sulphur content in the tailings up to 0.7%. Due to the easy oxidation of pyrrhotite, there is recommended fractional delivery of the collector with a total consumption 200 g/t. There are discussed results of the flotation study with an additional collector of PGM (sodium diizobutyditiophosfinate), which one show the possibility to increase extraction of platinum on 45%, as well as extraction of sulphur and palladium. For the flotation of sulfides and PGM from the current tailings there is recommended a combination of collectors for primary flotation and only butyl xanthate using in control operations. The possibility of using sludge fraction of the current tailings as a component for the preparation of the combined cementing materials after exposure of sulfides is analyzed. It is shown that the efficiency of the flotation of sulfides from this fraction can be enhanced using selective flocculants. There are discussed the advantages of implementation of completely hydrophobic butadiene-styrene copolymer in comparison with partially hydrophobic polymers. There is discussed an efficiency of the mechanochemical treatment of old tailings in turbo mill and sulphuric acid to remove oxide films from the surface of pyrrhotite before its flotation. Due to the pretreatment operation there is achieved increasing of sulphur extraction and after the introduction to the flotation circuit three control operations there is produced the fill material with sulphur content 2.5%. "Inter-aquifer leakage due to fractures caused by coal seam gas extractions or longwall mining is an important issue for both the gas and coal industries. Currently, predicting stress induced macro-porosity associated with hydraulic fracturing, depressurisation via dewatering or collapse of overlying seams to infill a void left by longwall mining, is problematic. If fractures can be located the fracture can be sealed. Locating fractures is difficult. The non-geophysical approaches to locate fractures has been to consider the mixing of different waters, particularly that of more recent shallower groundwater with older deeper groundwater, via differences in radio-isotopes integrated with geochemical models to predict likely mixing of waters. This approach is applicable under appropriately complex settings; however, it is an expensive technique and is based on the assumption that the daughter isotopes are equally non-reactive which may not always be the case.Potentially a cheaper and faster technique is to consider integrating geochemistry (mineral weathering) and hydrogeology. The chemistry of groundwater, controlled by the weathering of primary rock?minerals and?formation of secondary minerals, can not only be differentiated between geological strata but also within strata as different stages in weathering results in differing impacts on water quality (ie different reactants).Field analysis of pH, electrolytic conductivity (EC), oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and dissolved carbon dioxide together with laboratory analysis of dissolved constituents characterise the chemistry of the water. Collection of rock samples at the time of drilling for bore installation can provide the (only) opportunity to assess the media in which the groundwater resides and migrates through. An assessment of aquifer matrix chemical makeup, via bulk sample chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and petrographic analysis can achieve this.The chemistry of groundwater is dependent on the water velocity. Water at deposition and post-diagenesis dissolution of minerals by hydrolysis and oxidation will result in equilibria of the dissolved phase with the solid phase. Post-depositional fractures caused by either tectonic activity or weathering alter the rate of weathering and thereby the geochemistry. Slow water flow in microfractures results in water in equilibrium with the rock minerals. Faster flow in larger fractures results in water being in disequilibria with rock minerals.Fractures can alter groundwater chemistry by two pathways: changing groundwater velocity, which changes the rate of hydrolysis or oxidation mixing water from different geological strata.Both pathways cause subtle changes in the water chemistry.It is however, the dissolved phase chemical data, which can be observed over time at individual locations and/or at a point in time along a flow path, which allows the hydrogeologist to ælook up-gradientÆ and locate the zone of leakage. Hence, influences on rock/groundwater chemistry, from anthropogenic sources to natural mixing of waters, can be assessed via appropriate interpretation of geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry and flow data.This paper will use the example of the geochemical and hydrogeological characterisation of aquifers within the Hawkesbury and Bulgo Sandstone of the Southern Coalfields to the south of Sydney in New South Wales to demonstrate this approach.CITATION:Stuckey, M and Mulvey, P, 2013. Este estudo avaliou a influência da adição de um composto inorgânico radiopacificador sobre as propriedades do cimento Portland Branco, a fim de viabilizar sua utilização como cimento endodôntico, semelhante ao MTA. Primeiramente, cimento Portland Branco foi caracterizado por difração de raios-X, os resultados mostram que a amostra possui composição semelhante ao MTA, com exceção de bismuto na composição do material. O bismuto, segundo a literatura, é o agente radiopacificador presente no cimento endodôntico na base de MTA. Posteriormente foi selecionado um composto inorgânico, devido seu potencial radiopacificador para continuação do estudo, sendo este o Carbonato de Bismuto (Bi2(CO3)). Neste estudo foram avaliadas as seguintes propriedades; Tempo de presa inicial, compressão dimensional, solubilidade e alteração diametral, sendo todos os ensaios seguindo de acordo com a norma ISO 6878:2001. Para a realização destes ensaios, foram utilizadas amostras contendo 15% de Carbonato de Bismuto em sua composição. Comparando os resultados obtidos neste estudo, foi verificado de acordo com a literatura, que cimento Portland Branco acrescido de 15% de Carbonato de Bismuto possui propriedades semelhantes às do MTA, sugerindo assim, a viabilidade de sua utilização como alternativa menos onerosa aos demais materiais comercializados.

Neste trabalho, foram sintetizados e caracterizados nanofios de prata que posteriormente foram usados para produção de uma tinta condutora cuja, caracterização elétrica foi medida através de valores de tensão versus corrente. A primeira fase do trabalho consiste na obtenção dos nanofios pelo método poliol. Nesta fase, fez-se uma análise da estrutura dos fios, com o objetivo de verificar a uniformidade (forma e tamanho). Para estudos da estrutura utilizou-se a microscopia ótica (MO) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Também utilizou-se a espectroscopia de Ultravioleta-Visível (Uv-Vis) para identificação dos nanofios no produto obtido. A segunda fase, consiste no desenvolvimento da tinta condutora, onde nanofios foram redispersados em uma mistura de solventes e CTAB em banho de ultrassom, para obtenção de valores de tensão superficial e viscosidade. Por fim, medidas de corrente contínua da tinta, permitiram a construção da curva tensão versus corrente, da qual se obteve o valor da resistência elétrica. Através da curva foi possível comprovar o caráter condutor da tinta e pela linearidade da curva, verificou-se que a tinta produzida é considerada um material ôhmico.

An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.

Heat capacity measurements were made on sodium bromide ( NaBr ) and sodium iodide ( NaI) in the temperature ranges of 7 ° to 300 ° K and 56 ° to 300 ° K using an adiabatic calorimeter . Smooth values of heat capacity, entropy , enthalpy function , and free- energy function were calculated from the heat capacity data at 10° K intervals and at 273.15° and 298.15° K. Entropy and free energy of formation values at 298.15° K also were calculated for the two compounds using entropy values determined in this study and other data reported in the literature . The entropy values calculated at 298.15 ° K were 20.75 ± 0.06 entropy units (eu ) for sodium bromide and 23.55 ± 0.07 eu for sodium iodide .

On the Earth's Moon, obvious hazards to humans and machines are created by extreme temperature fluctuations, low gravity, and the virtual absence of any atmosphere. The most important other environmental factor is ionizing radiation. Less obvious environmental hazards that must be considered before establishing a manned presence on the lunar surface are the hazards from micrometeoroid bombardment, the nuisance of electro-statically-charged lunar dust, and an alien visual environment without familiar clues. Before man can establish lunar bases and lunar mining operations, and continue the exploration of that planet, we must develop a means of mitigating these hazards.

It has been identified that particulate matter in the form of suspended solids and bed load has the ability to adsorb heavy metals. Each year Ranger Uranium Mines Pty Ltd (RUM) identifies potential danger areas which could become major sediment sources during the wet season. Methods of suppressing sediment uptake such as hydromulching and coating areas with Poly Vinyl Acetate (PVA) glue are used. Other methods of reducing the sediment load after uptake such as diversion bunds, filters across drains, stone filters, minor sumps and settling ponds are also used. The 1983/84 wet season saw drain sediment loads reduced to acceptable levels before the water reached the outside environment. Studies to qualify and quantify flows from minor drains are still underway.

"AbstractBoth the quantity and quality of waters available as raw materials are important to Canadian industry and to the national economy. The huge demands of many Canadian industries is illustrated by tabulated figures, based on the 1950 Canadian production of certain products, and on United States figures for the gallons of water required to produce a unit quantity of each product. It is suggested from comparison with American survey results and figures that Canadian industrial water consumption is 1 to 11/2 billion Imperial gallons per day. Since present information on Canadian usage is meagre and it is not certain that American survey results can be directly applied to Canadian industry, this estimate must await confirmation in future studies.The hydrologic cycle and the principal factors affecting the quantity and quality of water, namely, climate and season, topography, geology, vegetation, and human activities, are discussed and the principal salts dissolved in water which affect industrial use are enumerated.The present survey studies by the Mines Branch on water quality are outlined. Besides chemical analyses of municipal water supplies within a watershed, periodic sampling and analyses of major surface waters for a one-year period is being carried out. The importance of studies on seasonal variation in quality is stressed by comparing the dissolved salts in various river waters with river flow. Figures showing such relationships in the Rideau river and Ottawa river at Ottawa, the Columbia river at Trail, B.C., and the Battle river at Unwin, Sask., are presented. Different rivers show different quality changes with changing flow, and possibly only after long-term studies can the relationships be predicted.Quality studies on water may be as important as studies on many other raw materials. The quantity of the raw material, water, is not inexhaustible nor is the quality indestructible, and more realization of its importance, followed by conservation and intelligent use, is desirable."

"Cast blasting is the primary means of overburden displacement in a surface coal mine. It serves two purposes; fragmenting the rock and throwing it directly to its spoil pile using explosive energy. Increased throw minimizes costs by reducing the amount of material that needs to be re-handled. Prior studies have shown that by only changing blast hole timing with the same blast design, fragmentation and throw alters. It is necessary in cast blasting to optimize both fragmentation and throw, since larger fragments will require more wasted energy to throw the same distance. In an operating mine in Georgia, an optimum inter-hole delay for fragmentation has been found by studying timings from 0ms to 45ms. Instantaneous timing between holes increased the throw by over 100 ft, but fragmentation was poor. Shock and detonation wave collision is a potential reason for this increased throw. This paper investigates this optimized inter-hole timing while altering top and bottom column primer time to potentially improve throw while maintaining optimum fragmentation. Timings studied are top initiation, bottom initiation, and top and bottom simultaneously. INTRODUCTION Explosives are utilized extensively by the mining industry in order to break rock, as either ore or overburden, for hauling, loading, and crushing. An effective production blast strives to achieve optimum rock fragmentation in order to increase the efficiency and reduce the costs of those downstream operations, while simultaneously meeting environmental regulations. The goal of blasting with respect to fragmentation is, according to Hettinger (2015), “to decrease the average particle size of the fragmented rock without overly increasing fines or, in other words, improve fragmentation.” Additionally, the distance the rock is transported by the explosive energy from the blast, also known as throw, can increase efficiency by reducing the amount of material that is re-handled by mine equipment. The primary situation in which this is desirable is the cast blasting of overburden across the narrow pit of a surface coal mine. A key variable in a blast design pattern that can be manipulated to optimize both fragmentation and throw is delay timing between detonations. The invention and increased utilization of electronic detonators has allowed for precise delay timings to be used between rows, holes, and even multiple primers within the same hole. These recent developments in the blasting community have also provided an opportunity to investigate whether or not the mechanism of shock or detonation wave collisions caused by short timing delays are responsible for any increased fragmentation or throw. This experiment attempts to demonstrate if an increase in throw can be achieved while maintaining optimum fragmentation. This study consisted of 3 full scale bench blasts at a granite quarry in Talbotton, GA. Each blast was characterized by the timing delay between the top and bottom primer in the blast column of each hole; one simultaneous blast with a 0 ms delay, a bottom-initiated blast with a 1 ms delay, and a top-initiated blast with a 1 ms delay. Fragmentation analysis of the resultant muckpiles was performed using a combination of the PortaMetrics handheld point-and-shoot rugged tablet from Motion Metrics and the software WipFrag from WipWare. Throw was measured by placing strategic distance markers on the floor of the bench and then taking overhead photographs of the muckpiles after each blast. High-speed video footage was captured of each blast using an MREL Blaster’s Ranger II camera."

In many occasions during the Mining operation life, blasting engineers find different and controversial results of fragmentation, dilution or wall control for the same geotechnical domain and blast design (pattern and explosive charge). Most of the times, the difference between same blast designs is not measured, not controlled. Once a blast designed is defined, the most important part of the process after that is the implementation of every step of the blast on site. Almost nobody is measuring it, controlling it, but just controlling implementation is possible to relate blast design with results in a consistent way, to optimize the full process of D&B. Controlling implementation not only per event but also to check and change trends and decision-making is paramount for optimization and saving millions of extra costs every year. The lack of resources and the hardness to manage all the info created every day in a blast make this process very tough and difficult to maintain in long term. The use of new technologies on site and software that allows a best, more consistent and continuous control of blast implementation have been proved to be the key for optimizations and cost saving. This document shows the evolution of drilling and blast digitization process, savings and trends in a mine, using new technologies that creates business opportunities and general improvement of D&B process.

Mine optimization is a key strategy in the mining industry that focuses on improving the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of mining operations. To achieve mine optimization, digitalization is essential for modernizing mining operations and attaining optimal performance. Due to the importance of mine digitalization, various software and platforms have been released to support this effort. Furthermore, by integrating these advanced technologies, mines can enhance processes, leading to significant economic and operational benefits. However, integrating data from various sources and collaborating across different platforms remains a significant challenge in the mining industry. Generally, data for mine optimization, such as mapping, smart drilling, FMS (Fleet Management Systems), fragmentation analysis, or vibration analysis, are collected and analyzed separately on different platforms. This separation makes it difficult to aggregate and utilize data comprehensively for overall mining process optimization. During the digitalization process, obstacles arise due to these complexity, variability, and sharing issues of data across different maker, sources, and methods. These challenges highlight the need for seamless integration to achieve optimal mining operations. Thus, this study applied a total solution that can cover the entire Drilling and Blasting (D&B) processes. The blast design was performed using actual terrain mapping data, and drilling and charging were conducted following a guide based on the blast design plan. After blasting, loading and hauling distances and fuel consumption were measured, and fragmentation for each blast was evaluated. All measurement tasks were automated to minimize human error. By collecting all data in one server, it became possible to perform an overall evaluation for each blast, allowing the identification of optimal values. In conclusion, to evaluate the optimization effects for each mining process, one month of integrated data collected on a single server was used. Compared to the period before the Total solution was implemented, there were notable improvements: a 25% enhancement in hole spacing, a 60% improvement in floor flatness, a 23% reduction in average fragment size, and a 19% improvement in fragment uniformity. Regarding cost savings per blasting volume, the improvements were 11.7% in drilling, 9.3% in explosives, 7.6% in loading, and 17.5% in hauling.

The mineral aggregate industry is the world's largest mining and processing endeavor, yet it is graced with little of the romance or public awareness that accompanies mention of gold, silver, iron, copper, uranium, or aluminum mining efforts. Much of this reaction is undoubtedly due to the fact that the uses to which crushed stone and sand and gravel are normally put are not fully recognized or appreciated by the general public. Few individuals ever have occasion to purchase mineral aggregates for anything other than use for decorative shrubbery beds or walkways. They may, however, buy ready-mix concrete for a new patio, bituminous concrete for a new driveway, concrete blocks, or other building materials for a new room and never realize that the primary ingredients of their purchases are either direct or indirect products of the mineral aggregate industry. The average person driving past an operating crushed stone quarry or an active sand and gravel pit rarely realizes the economic impact the industry, represented by that operation, exercises on the general economy. He is not aware, nor does he really care, that elements of the modern comfortable environment to which he has grown accustomed rely to a great extent on the products of the crushed stone and sand and gravel industries Iron and steel, glass, cement, agriculture, and highway and building construction are but a few of the major industries to whom the products of the mineral aggregate industry are basic. Without these industries or without the stone, sand, and gravel basic to them, most of the major elements of our modern day civilization would be non-existent.

The subject of violent bumps in coal mines has been again brought to attention by a recent succession of such occurrences in the coal mines of the Cumberland field of eastern Kentucky and southern Virginia, which have caused fatalities and injuries to underground employees, a report on which is being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines1. The A.I.M.E. has had two valuable papers on bumps in the No. 2 Mine, Springhill, Nova Scotia, each followed by general discussion on bumps and their causes2. This paper gives a brief review of suggested causes and remedial measures given in English, Canadian and United States reports on blimps in coal mines, and then presents suggestions arising from the writer's recent investigation of the bumps in the Cumberland mines, made at the request of the mine operators, to determine the causes and remedies. These bumps, which occur under the simplest natural conditions, provide better opportunity for analysis of causes and effects than afforded under more complex conditions. The simple conditions in this field consist of relatively thin and level coal beds and uniform roof strata free from folding and faulting.
