Due to the unbalanced top coal drawing process, the recovery ratio is low, and the equipment stability is poor in the longwall top coal caving mining (LTCC) with an inclined seam. Aimed at these problems, this paper proposes the dynamic group caving method (DGCM). The basic procedure is that when the drawn volume of top coal from a support reaches about half, the next support begins drawing top coal, and the drawing process between the two supports is half done. Taking the panel no. 8103 in Beixinyao mine as the research object, the characteristics of drawing body shape, particle movement trace, and variation of recovery ratio are investigated by using Particle Flow Code. Furthermore, the effect of mining-caving ratio on the top coal drawing law under DGCM is revealed by the simulation results, and compared with the single-opening sequence caving method (SSCM) and the doubleopenings sequence caving method, advantages of DGCM are determined in inclined seams. The results show that the drawing body can be divided into the left and the right under DGCM. Specifically, the drawn top coal particles in the left are from the upper part of this support, that in the right are from the lower part of next support, which verifies the correctness of the theoretical analysis. The characteristics of the drawing body shape are more significant when the mining-caving ratio is relatively small. In addition, with increasing mining-caving ratio, the recovery ratio of the panel both increases gradually underDGCMand SSCM.When the miningcaving ratio is less than 1:1, the recovery ratio of DGCM is obviously higher than that of SSCM, indicating that DGCM can greatly improve the recovery ratio. While when the mining-caving ratio is larger than 1:1, the recovery ratio of two caving methods is basically equal; however, the advancing time is significantly shortened under DGCM. This study are of great significance to realize high efficiency and precise caving in LTCC with an inclined seam.

The following article covers the history of a metallurgical campaign, commenced in March, 1905, at the mines of the Socorro Bold Co., in the so-called desert region of Yuma county, Arizona. The results obtained were simply a function of necessity, as will be seen from the description of the local economic conditions and the character of the ores treated. The mines and mill of the Socorro Gold Co. are located near the small village of Harrisburg, about 60 miles from Congress Junction, Ariz., which, at the time this work was undertaken, was the nearest railroad station, and from which all supplies were brought by wagon through the desert, at a cost varying from $10 to $15 per ton in addition to the railroad freights. Wood, the only available fuel, cost $7 per cord. Water for all purposes was pumped to the plant from a well in the valley about 4 miles away. Under the Arizona law, a working-shift is 8 hr. Wages were $6 per day for foremen and mill-men, $4 per day for blacksmiths and engineers, $3.50 per day for miners, and $3 per day for shovelers and trammers. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerale were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was equipped with plates for amalgamation, and three Standard tables for concentration. The tails from the tables mere elevated by a centrifugal pump to a launder, by which they were conveyed to a 60-ton cyanide-mill for further treatment. The cyanide-mill was erected at so great a distance from the stamp-mill that a separate crew of workers and a separate power-plant were necessary. This report on the properties of commercial motor fuels sold in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Cooperative Research Council (C.R.C. ) and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior . The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-364 . Further reports on motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 have been issued . No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942 . The present report presents analytical data for 1,120 samples , representing the products of approximately 88 companies . As in previous surveys , these companies include both large and small suppliers . In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received . Conforming to previous surveys , the data cover three groups of samplesregular - price , premium - price , and third - grade gasolines and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples , items and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows : Regular price , 641 samples , 250 items , and 64 brands ; premium price , 439 samples , 222 items , and 68 brands ; third - grade gasoline , 50 samples , 50 items and 19 brands .

1. Book reviews ? Second International Conference on Hydrocyclones. Cranfield (Bedford, MK43 OAT, England), BHRA Fluid Engineering Centre, 1984. £33. Reviewer: R.P. King This volume contains the 28 papers presented at the Second International Conference on Hydrocyclones, which was held in Bath (England) in September 1984. The format and presentation of the papers are similar to those of the first volume in the series, and this volume con¬tinues the series as an authoritative account of much of the research work associated with hydrocyclones that is being undertaken throughout the world. The volume was produced from camera-ready copy supplied by the authors, but the quality of reproduction is very high and both text and figures are legible throughout the volume. Although most of the work reported deals with the hydrocyclone as a classification device, important sections are devoted to liquid-liquid separations and heavy¬medium separations.

The disposal of coal tailings in an economically and environmentally sustainable way can be considered one of the biggest challenges for coal producers due to their physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics and the significant annual volumes generated. The processing and utilization of coal fines is recognized as one of the great technical challenges of this industry. These challenges become even greater when it comes to the use of tailings from coking coals. This is due to the potential changes in their various properties, variability of these characteristics along the deposits, the handling and dewatering aspects of the products and the granulometric restrictions imposed by the coking plants for the coals to be handling and coking. This work presents the current stage of project development for the use of a metallurgical coal fines dam, addressing the general concept of the project, the exploratory sampling program and the characterization of the tailings for process and product development purposes after processing. It aims at the characterization and the carbonization tests for product development, the mining method considered, product alternatives, suitable to the market, to be generated and the next steps.

Most world-class high-grade (60 - 67 wt per cent Fe) hematite iron ore deposits are the product of enrichment of Precambrian iron-formations but processes responsible for enrichment are still unclear. Different models, ranging from syngenetic and diagenetic (King, 1989), deep-seated hydrothermal (Powell et al, 1999; Barley et al, 1999; Taylor et al, 2001; Gutzmer et al, 2002) and ancient supergene (Morris, 1980; 1985; Van Schalkwyk and Beukes, 1986) to modern supergene (MacLeod, 1966) have been suggested. The high-grade hematite deposits stand in contrast to martiteûgoethite ores which are generally accepted to be the result of supergene enrichment of iron-formation because they are found along Cretaceous to Tertiary lateritic weathering profiles (Morris, 1980; Harmsworth et al, 1990). Uncertainties about the origin of the high-grade hematite ores appear largely due to the monomineralic composition of the ores. They are almost exclusively composed of hematite (as microcrystalline hematite and martite), a mineral with wide stability field and very simple chemical composition that reveals little about its origin. Second, many of the deposits have been overprinted by later deformation and chemical weathering obscuring primary ore characteristics and zonation (Taylor et al, 2001). Third, surprisingly few detailed geological studies have been undertaken on the deposits with the aim of unraveling ore genesis. Most studies focus on the present-day structure of orebodies and their general physical-chemical composition for mining and beneficiation purposes. A more thorough understanding of the origin of high-grade hematite iron ore deposits may be gained by combining available mining-orientated data with systematic petrographic-geochemical analyses of different ore generations and hematite phases. This paper presents a first summary of results of an ongoing study, started some two years ago, of high-grade iron ore deposits in South Africa, India and Brazil, including a comparison with the rather well studied deposits of the Hamersley Province in Australia.

Conditions in the underground mine environment can cause self-heating of sulfide ores as a result of exothermic oxidation reactions, which may result in mine fires. This Bureau of Mines report describes thermal analyses of finely ground chalcopyrite, chalcocite, galena, pyrrhotite, marcasite, and arsenopyrite, to characterize their responses under oxidizing conditions. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) were used, in the temperature range 1000 to 5000 C. Chalcopyrite showed an initial weight gain, due to formation of sul-fates, a weight loss, caused by ignition of iron sulfide to iron oxide, and a final weight gain, indicating the conversion of copper sulfide to sulfate. Chalcocite did not ignite in the temperature range studied but exhibited a rapid weight gain, because of the rapid conversion of copper sulfide to sulfate. Likewise, galena failed to ignite but underwent a steady weight gain when oxidized in a moist atmosphere, showing conver-sion of lead sulfide to sulfate below the ignition point. Marcasite underwent a rapid weight loss, indicating ignition, at 2000 C. Moisture in the oxidizing atmosphere lowered the ignition point of marcasite and arsenopyrite but not that of pyrrhotite. All the sulfides exhibited exothermic behavior at temperatures below the ignition point.

A prática de escória espumante ganhou o mundo dos fornos elétricos a arco por apresentar muitas vantagens, dentre elas a redução das perdas térmicas do arco elétrico para o ambiente, reduzindo o consumo de energia elétrica e também permitindo uma maior recuperação do metal perdido em forma de FeO para a escória através da reversão feita com a injeção de C. No entanto, a eficiência das escórias espumantes produzidas atualmente ainda é tema de estudo para aqueles que querem melhorar a eficiência do processo, a vida do equipamento e reduzir custos de elaboração. Assim, esse trabalho tem como objetivo otimizar as propriedades da escória através do ajuste da saturação em MgO, melhorando a eficiência da escória espumante e reduzindo a perda de Fe sob a forma de FeO. O resultado das alterações realizadas foram ganho de energia elétrica medido e redução da perda de rendimento metálico do FEA, obtida comparando o peso produzido e o esperado pela carga metálica.

Neste trabalho, foi desenvolvido um modelo de elementos finitos para simular o primeiro passe da laminação a quente do trem acabador de tiras de aço C-Mn. O comportamento desse aço é definido por equações constitutivas que descrevem os mecanismos de encruamento e recristalização acoplados aos campos de tensões, deformações e temperatura. Foi implementada uma sub-rotina em linguagem FORTRAN disponível no programa de elementos finitos ABAQUS/Standard. O modelo foi estabelecido no estado plano de deformação por meio de elementos finitos com acoplamento dos campos de temperatura e deformação para o cilindro de trabalho e tira. As dimensões e condições de processo foram obtidas a partir de dados industriais do laminador de tiras a quente da CSN. O modelo prevê as distribuições de temperaturas e valor de carga de laminação em boa concordância com as medidas industriais. Os resultados do modelo evidenciam que há ocorrência de recristalização dinâmica durante o primeiro passe e, apontam que em determinadas regiões da tira a fração recristalizada dinamicamente chega a 100%. A análise de sensibilidade dos parâmetros do modelo foi feita para determinar o seu impacto nos resultados das simulações, notadamente na força de laminação e no tamanho de grão austenítico final.

Sendo o alumínio um metal amplamente empregado na produção de partes integrantes de aeronaves, aonde este deve atender a requisitos básicos necessários, como uma boa resistência mecânica, fadiga e corrosão, aliado a baixa densidade, o estudo deste metal se torna pertinente. Visto tais necessidades deste setor, a avaliação destas se torna importante diante da possibilidade de utilização de processos de deformação plástica severa (DPS) para o refinamento de microestrutura, a qual irá acarretará assim, melhoras em propriedades mecânicas. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o comportamento mecânico, através da dureza HV, medida por um ultramicrodurômetro instrumentado, desejando encontrar uma maior homogeneidade microestrutural bem como o seu refino.

Blindagens cerâmicas são frequentemente utilizadas para proteção contra projéteis de alta energia, como os de calibre 7,62 mm e 5,56 mm. Recentemente, foi demonstrado que a modificação da geometria da face de impacto, de plana para convexa, possibilita uma melhor distribuição das tensões geradas pela interação do projétil com o alvo. Este efeito provocaria um aumento na absorção de energia do projétil, proporcionando uma maior segurança ao usuário. No presente trabalho caracterizou-se uma blindagem com a face cerâmica convexa, por meio da metodologia da norma NIJ-0101.06 (2008), ou seja, pelo ensaio balístico com medição do trauma em um material de referência que simula a consistência do corpo humano. Este ensaio visa a aplicação do material em coletes balísticos. Foi observada uma melhora significativa no desempenho balístico após a modificação da geometria.

The major waste product of the alkaline extraction of alumina from bauxite [Bayer Process] is known as red-mud. Approximately, a ton of red-mud is produced for every two tons of bauxite that is mined. The red-mud produced from Jamaican bauxite is rich in hematite, alumina and titanium oxide. It has been shown that over 90 wt. pct. alumina can be recovered from red-mud by soda-ash sintering and caustic leaching. Hematite can be carbothermically reduced with a degree of metallization of over 94 pct. At this stage, the product could be charged through the tuyeres in an iron blast furnace or smelted to produce pig iron. The mineralogical characteristics of the reduced product are not amenable to magnetic separation for iron recovery. The problems associated with the use of reduced red-mud as an alternative to direct-reduced iron [DRI] has also been discussed. Special attention has been paid to lower the alkali content of the reduced material. If smelted, the concentration of titanium oxide in the slag will be significantly high justifying its recovery by an acid-leach process. This paper describes the successful efforts of iron and alumina recovery.
