1. Book review . Fundamentals of fracture mechanics, by J.F. Knot. London, Buterworths, 1981 (reprint). Reviewer: G. Leadbeater The present reviewer approached the above book as a relative novice on the intricate details of fracture mechanics. Thus, the review is based to a great extent on how easily the information presented can be assimilated and understood, and how the book's format and content facilitate this. O lingotamento contínuo de tarugos é um processo extremamente complexo dependente de variáveis que influenciam diretamente na qualidade do aço lingotado e na produtividade. Geralmente essa influência é conflituosa. É necessário conhecer melhor os parâmetros de processo para compreender seus efeitos naquilo que é a base do lingotamento contínuo: a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Foram levantados dados de temperatura durante o lingotamento de diversas corridas de aços em uma planta de aços longos especiais. As medidas de temperatura das paredes do molde da máquina LC foram obtidas, utilizando-se termopares estrategicamente posicionados ao longo do comprimento do molde e nas suas faces. Através da obtenção dos valores de temperatura desses termopares e do levantamento dos dados de processo de cada corrida monitorada, foi possível correlacionar a influência da velocidade com a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Por fim, os resultados mostram que o aumento da velocidade de lingotamento gera um aumento na transferência de calor.

The final goal of the research project is to develop a 3D FEM model that is able to predict the kinetics and micro-structural evolution during the bainitic transformation. The input parameters consist of thermodynamic and atomic mobility data obtained from the ThermoCalc and mCTRA databases combined with structural mechanics data extracted from the stress-strain curves of the fcc and bee phases. In this paper the general principles of the model are outlined and some interesting preliminary results are shown and commented. The full implementation of the model has presently not been achieved yet. In the model the bainitic transformation is considered as a sequence of martensitic (re)nucleation and growth of a ferritic subunit followed by the carbon rejection into the surrounding austenite. The (re)nucleation of the subunits will be described through a non-classical martensitic nucleation criterion. Once a nucleus has been activated at a specific location in the material, a full-sized subunit is instantaneously formed through a displacive mechanism. The stress state in the system that arises due to the transformation strain can be calculated by a 3D FEM programming code. Immediately after the formation of the subunit, another 3D FEM programming code calculates the carbon diffusion from the supersaturated ferrite into the surrounding austenite. The resulting stress state and carbon profiles will be used to determine where and when a new subunit will nucleate based on a renucleation criterion. "We have reported previously that crushing or grinding crystalline silica results in the generation of silica-based radicals on the particulate surface and that these radicals can generate hydroxyl radicals in aqueous solution. Data in the present study indicate that freshly ground silica is more cytotoxic and is a more potent activator of alveolar macrophages than comparably sized aged silica. That is, compared to aged silica, fresh silica is 4.2-fold more potent in decreasing the membrane integrity of macro· phages; is 50% more potent in activating hydrogen peroxide secretion by macro· phages; and is 4.frfold more potent in stimulating cellular chemiluminescence. Prosil 28, an organosilane material, is an effective coating agent for fresh silica. It decreases the cytotoxicity of fresh silica by as much as 78% and decreases the ability of fresh silica to induce chemiluminescence from alveolar macrophages by 58%. The data suggest that surface radicals associated with freshly cleaved dust may be an important factor in the induction of pulmonary disease. Furthermore, treating dust with coating agents may substantially decrease toxicity. INTRODUCTIONThe U.S. Department of Labor estimates that over 1.25 million American workers may be exposed to crystalline silica and that nearly 60,000 may be at risk of developing some degree of occupational lung disease (Parkes, 1982; Peters, 1986). Occupations of concern include miners, stone quarry workers, sand and gravel workers, sandblasters, foundry workers, and glass workers. Acute silicosis is characterized by inflammation, alveolar lipoproteinosis, and the rapid development of respiratory disability (Banks, 1986). In contrast, chronic silicosis develops 20-40 yr after initial exposure and is characterized by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions and the progressive development of dyspnea (Parkes, 1982; Ziskind et al., 1976)."

"Inherent existence of different rooms (openings) along the extraction line in a depillaring panel provides an easy path for the goaf to encroach the working area. Each of these openings in a mechanized depillaring (MD) operation along the extraction line is supported by the roof bolt-based breaker line support (RBBLS) to restrict the goaf encroachment. Different field studies by Council for Scientific and Industrial Research - Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR) found that the RBBLS works effectively during the depillaring under the shadow of stable surrounding ribs/fenders only. It is observed that, generally, these natural supports experience high value of induced stresses after a large amount of void creation inside the goaf. The induced stress creates spalling/loosening of the sides of the natural supports. Field studies also found that the positions of the RBBLS at the goaf edge need to be adjusted according to the depth of this spalling/ loosening. However, a systematic study in field for the correct positioning of the breaker line as per the spalling/loosening under different site conditions is difficult. Therefore, on the basis of the data and guidance provided by these field investigations, a detailed parametric investigation was conducted in the laboratory on simulated models for an effective design of RBBLS in a MD panel. FLAC3D is used for the simulation of the depillaring, and the available empirical formulations for Indian coalfields are used for subsequent calibration. An analysis of stress redistribution for different stages of the MD in simulated models showed the significance of the nature of overlying strata/induced stress for the RBBLS design. Discussing some results of field studies, this paper presents results of the laboratory investigations for an effective design of the RBBLS.INTRODUCTIONContinuous Miner (CM)-based mechanized depillaring (MD) is an important issue for Indian coalfields, where huge amounts of coal are locked up in standing pillars (Dixit and Mishra, 2010). Considerable variations in site conditions of these developed pillars bring a number of technical challenges into consideration during their final extraction. One of these challenges is goaf encroachment/overriding during caving of the competent roof strata. Goaf encroachment/overriding can effectively be controlled, mainly, by suitable design of natural supports (rib/snook/fender). However, there is a requirement of applied supports against the immediate roof as a considerable portion of this roof is exposed due to the presence of different openings along the line of extraction. These applied supports act as a fulcrum at the goaf edge between the working area and the goaf to facilitate the break out of the hanging roof inside the goaf. This is called breaker line support. An effective breaker line support is important for the efficiency of a depillaring operation. Generally, MD adopts roof bolt-based breaker line support (RBBLS) at the goaf edge (Singh, et al., 2014). For the first time in India, roof bolts were applied at the goaf edge as RBBLS in a CM-based MD (Leeming, 2003). In the beginning, three rows of roof bolts were installed as primary and secondary breaker lines support. On the basis of the observations of instrumented bolts, only two rows of roof bolts were used as secondary RBBLS (Ram, et al., 2014). Now, most of the MD operations in India are using only two rows of bolts as RBBLS (Table 1). However, the strata mechanics studies at different MD operations showed interesting characteristics resulting from this support (Ram, et al., 2015)."

"The flexibility of the PlantStar control platform has enabled Mintek to investigate and easily develop new control strategies for both milling and flotation. This includes a Solids Feed Controller, a Safety Limit Controller, Mill Power Optimiser and Flotation Optimiser, amongst others.The solids feed controller was developed for minerals processing plants using a specialised time delay compensator. Using conventional time delay compensators that are purely model based, results in robustness problems due to model uncertainties. The Mintek Solid Feeds Controller makes use of a plant model, but compensates for model inaccuracies, giving more controller stability and a more robust delay compensation algorithm.The safety limit controller has been developed to switch smoothly between normal and safety control loops without bumping the process. The safety loop output is chosen in accordance with a predefined list of priorities and whether the respective constraint boundaries are exceeded.The Mill Power Optimiser helps to find the power peak on the mill power curve. This insures maximum grind with maximum throughput. It also prevents power dips due to mill overloads, making the milling circuit easier to operate.The flotation optimiser algorithm analyses trends of all accessible variables in the process. The algorithm uses this information to calculate operating conditions that will control the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit to a specified setpoint. Research is being done to now optimise these setpoints in order to achieve better recovery."

"As a part of the FUME research programme being done by the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Association (FFF), the SINTEF Group and NTNU, several measurements towards quantifying the gaseous and solid emissions from the draining of the silicon furnaces for metal have been carried out.Based on the measured size distribution of the formed fume particles and known particle growth theory, an estimate of the growth time for the given particles has been calculated. The formation time for the measured NO amount has also been calculated based on the fume measurements and a thermodynamic model of the furnace gases combusting with air. The two “formation” times are in the same order of magnitude and they are therefore used as parameters in a CFD model, modelling that the formed fume particles are heating up the surrounding air and thereby forming NO according to the Zeldovich mechanism. The measurements show an approximately equal constant NO formation per fume particle. The CFD model shows results in the same order of magnitude, supporting that the particle growth and NO formation happen under near stoichiometric conditions and are controlled by the formation of SiO2 fume.IntroductionNOx is the common notion for the two gases nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) formed during combustion of fuels. Os tubos de Plástico Reforçado com Fibras de Vidro, também conhecidos como tubos de PRFV são pouco utilizados em obras de infraestrutura no Brasil, principalmente por desconhecimento técnico da sua vida estrutural. Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar a expectativa mínima de 50 (cinquenta) anos de utilização dos tubos de PRFV. A metodologia adotada consiste na realização de ensaios mecânicos de longa duração em corpos de prova de tubos de PRFV por mais de 10.000 horas (1,4 anos), conforme rigor da norma ASTM D 2992 – Procedimento B. Este ensaio é comumente conhecido como ensaio de HDB (Hydrostatic Design Basis). Os resultados mostraram que a metodologia utilizada é adequada para verificar e certificar a vida estrutural dos tubos de PRFV, bem como evidenciou que o valor de HDB encontrado é satisfatório e compatível, quando comparado aos outros ensaios de HDB realizados no mundo em tubos de PRFV fabricados pelo mesmo processo produtivo de enrolamento contínuo.

Empirical and phenomenological models of SAG and AG mills have dominated the scene for the last few decades, being used nearly every time a mill is scale-up or an attempt is made to improve its performance. However, in spite of their success, these models fail to describe the details of both the grinding environment and the breakage mechanisms. The result is a generally good track record, with a few ? but very important ? instances when these models fall short in their predictions, which can be very costly. Further, nearly all of these models require detailed calibration to industrial and pilot plant data, being costly in their application, although still with limited predictive capabilities. Recognizing these challenges, a new model framework has been proposed which overcomes the limitations of currently used models by coupling the microscale population balance model, the discrete element model and functions that describe internal classification at the mill grate. This model framework has already been applied to describe breakage in ball mills, with showing very promising results. However, in the case of SAG and AG mills a much greater level of complexity is involved in the model, given the interaction between the mechanical environment that is formed totally or, in part, by the ore itself, and the breakage response in the mill. The paper describes the model framework, demonstrating how it can address appropriately effects such as mill speed, mill filling and size distribution, on the response from the mill. Some of the advantages of the model are related to its intrinsic multi-component and dynamic nature, which allows simulating appropriately mixtures of ores of different competences in a transient manner.

Book news 1. Book reviews ? Prospecting in areas of desert terrain. London, The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, 1985. 283 pp. £28 (members £25,20). Reviewer: J.S. Mostert This publication records the proceedings of a con¬ference convened to deal exclusively with prospecting in areas of desert terrain. The meeting, organized jointly by The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (London) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Morocco, was held in Rabat from 14th to 17th April, 1985, and generated considerable international interest. Exploration cam¬paigns and case studies of successful discoveries in the desert areas of more than 14 lands are described. Since large areas of South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia are characterized by and and semi-arid terrains, this publication should be of considerable interest to explorationists and mining engineers engaged in the search for and development of mineral deposits in southern Africa. The fact that the desert terrains of southern Africa are host to a number of important base-metal (Aggeneys, Gamsberg, Prieska, and O'Okiep) and diamond deposits (Orapa, Jwaneng) has ensured continued interest in these areas from the viewpoints of exploration and mining.

Carbon sequestration in planted forests provides an immediately available, low cost option to address the greenhouse impacts of coal mining and coal utilisation in a carbon constrained world. In addition, planted forests also offer the opportunity to address other environmental issues, particularly salinity and loss of biodiversity. Given salinity is characteristically associated with agriculture in the 500 to 700 mm rainfall belt, then where such forests can also produce commercial timber products, they offer the additional opportunity to establish new, diversified rural employment in both timber growing and processing. In the majority of Australian catchments affected by salinity, where rainfall is generally less than the 700 mm limit to conventional forestry, and where groundwater reserves are often saline, the objective of achieving economically viable forestry production presents a significant challenge. In 1996, Saltgrow commenced a collaborative breeding program to combine the salt and stress tolerance of E camaldulensis, with the growth rate, stem form and wood properties of the commercial species, E grandis and E globules. This program aimed to produce trees with the potential for commercial rehabilitation of saline landscapes. Results covering a range of site conditions from SaltgrowÆs network of over 100 trials around Australia are presented. The opportunity for commercial plantations integrated with agriculture in low to medium rainfall areas to address salinity and sustainability will be discussed. In addition, the significant potential for partnerships between land-rich, cash-poor farmers, catchment management authorities seeking to invest in public good projects that enhance environmental sustainability, and major carbon producing industries with either mandated or voluntary requirements to curtail net emissions will also be discussed.

It has been well understood that blasting is the cost-effective method for breaking rocks as compared with the mechanical systems. However, vibrations induced by blasting in open-pit mines could pose problems to the structures surrounding the mine site. Blast-induced ground vibration has been the subject of research for several studies in the past; because of the complex nature of blasting mechanism, it is difficult to predict blast-induced vibrations. Even though there are several approaches proposed by the previous researchers, traditional regression analysis is still playing an important role in predicting blast-inducedgroundvibrations.

O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar a construção de uma coluna de flotação piloto de baixo custo, que será utilizada para concentração de minerais ferrosos. O trabalho contém os passos seguidos no projeto de construção do equipamento (descrição dos sistemas operacionais; dimensionamento; desenhos do projeto; levantamento dos materiais, fornecedores e orçamentos; testes dos sistemas de aeração e bombeamento, além da montagem) e também, os resultados dos ensaios exploratórios realizados com uma amostra de minério de ferro, contendo 38% de Fe, doada pela Companhia Vale S. A. proveniente da Mina de Alegria, Mariana/MG. Nos ensaios preliminares, obtiveram-se teores de Fe no concentrado próximos a 50% e uma recuperação metalúrgica em torno de 90%. O resultado foi considerado adequado, tendo em vista que foi realizado apenas um estágio de concentração. Dessa forma, conclui-se que a montagem e operação da coluna foram satisfatórias e o protótipo pode ser utilizado como unidade piloto para a avaliação de diferentes condições de processo.
