Caterpillar has been involved in highwall mining since the purchase of Bucyrus in 2011. The Cat® HW300 is a continuation of the Superior Highwall Miner that was first sold in the USA in 1994. Currently, there are more than 80 machines supplied worldwide, and Caterpillar envisions increasing the population steadily in the coming years. The Cat highwall miner product group, based in Beckley, WV, has been involved in the sales of all miners to date. With the dealer model that Caterpillar is using, more people, dealers in particular, need to be trained on the application of highwall mining. A site investigation is a highwall specialist?s work, and Caterpillar assists dealers and customers in determining the technical feasibility of highwall mining on mine sites. With the ever-increasing amount of requests, it proved to be important that people without highwall mining expertise, yet who are familiar with mining, could perform a very quick analysis of a potential highwall mining site to determine at an early stage if it is worthwhile to invest the time and money of all parties?customer, dealer, and Caterpillar?in further follow-up. Coal has in general a wide range of density from minus 1.3 to plus 2.0 g/cm3 because of its variations in purity, rank, and porosity, etc. The coal density has great impact on froth flotation performance, but much less attention has been paid to particle density than particle size. Our previous research results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles around 700 nm in diameter can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubble on the flotation performances of different density fractions (minus 1.3, 1.3-1.4, 1.4-1.5, 1.5-1.6, 1.6-1.8, 1.8-2.0, 2.2-2.2, and plus 2.2 g/cm3) of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-liter flotation cells, a specially designed 50-mm-inside-diameter column, and a 152-mm-inside-diameter column. It was found that nanobubble has the biggest impact on the flotation performance of 1.4-1.8 g/cm3 medium-density coal particles.

Mineral sands are different to almost any other commodity; however, it shares similarities with other commodity types, such as the importance of quality constraints of iron ore and coal or the importance of physical properties of diamonds. The mineral sands industry consists of two principal product streams; titanium dioxide minerals û in the form of rutile, ilmenite and leucoxene, and zircon. The principal valuable heavy minerals (VHM) include ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile and zircon. Variations of other titanium minerals occur between the end members of ilmenite and rutile, including pseudo rutile and anatase. Most mineral sands deposits are found in unconsolidated fossil shorelines several hundreds of metres to tens of kilometres and occasionally hundreds of kilometres inland from the present coastline. Mineral sands orebodies essentially fall into two categories based on the mode of deposition: alluvial or aeolian. Alluvial deposits are further split into marine beach placers (or strandlines) and lacustrine heavy mineral (HM) accumulations. Exploration for mineral sands involves the positive identification of key criteria leading to the focus of exploratory surface sampling, augering and drilling. Assaying is primarily focused around determining the percentage of HM contained within a given sample. Other results of interest include clay fines, sand and oversize. Metallurgical/mineralogical assessment is often undertaken via laboratory scale bench tests that replicate the wet concentration and dry mill processing routes. The most critical component in resource assessment for mineral sands is about quantifying HM grade, then mineralogical assemblage and then quality of those mineral species. This will determine whether a mineral sand final product is marketable or not. Mining of mineral sands is conducted either wet or dry. Wet methods are generally preferred for large tonnage, unconsolidated and low clay orebodies. Where ground conditions are hard and orebodies are small, high grade and discontinuous, dry mining techniques are generally employed. Concentration of mineral sands from the primary ore is carried out in two sections; wet, utilising sizing and gravity differentiation between HM, VHM, clay and quartz, and dry, exploiting the magnetic, electrostatic and to a lesser extent specific gravity (SG) properties of the minerals of interest. Mineral sands exploration, mining and processing faces the same operating challenges as the rest of the resource sector. Added to this are the issues that are unique to mineral sands and to which the industry devotes considerable resources to developing solutions.

Na indústria siderúrgica integrada, geram-se vários tipos de coprodutos, dentre estes escoria granulada de alto forno, os pós de aciaria extraídos nos sistemas de despoeiramento a úmido e a seco do conversor LD e o pó de coletor de alto forno. Em relação aos pós, são principalmente portadores de unidades de ferro e carbono, podendo conter também zinco, o que os tornam alvos de estudos e inovações que buscam recuperar ou reciclar estes elementos. No presente estudo foram concebidos briquetes autorredutores usando os pós finos-F e grossos -G, oriundos de um sistema de despoeiramento a seco de aciaria LD, nas proporções percentuais, F – G, de 50-50 e 70-30, misturados com pó de coletor de alto forno. Utilizando como aglomerante o cimento ARI, foram avaliadas as resistências à compressão dos briquetes em diferentes tempos de cura e determinadas suas metalizações nas temperaturas de 1100°C e 1150°C, em tempos que se estenderam até 45 minutos. Adicionalmente, as capacidades dos briquetes de alterarem a temperatura do aço liquido quando adicionados ao banho, foram avaliadas utilizando-se o balanço térmico do sistema briquete-aço liquido, bem como considerados os potenciais de oxidação do processo e o estabelecimento de um sequenciamento termodinâmico para as reações. Os resultados mostraram que os aglomerados autorredutores possuem alta capacidade refrigerante quando adicionados ao aço liquido, o que os enquadra como possíveis materiais alternativos à sucata e pelotas no controle da temperatura do aço nos convertedores LD. Além disso, a alta cinética de metalização do Fe mostrou ser também viável o uso dos briquetes autorredutores na recuperação do metal contido nos resíduos.

Com o barateamento dos custos de implantação e inovações em estruturas geradoras de energias renováveis, nos dias atuais a demanda de instalação de fontes renováveis de energia tem aumentado exponencialmente. Porém como toda estrutura estas estruturas estão condicionadas a falhas de vários tipos. Neste trabalho apresenta-se uma análise de falha de uma peça, de uma estrutura de sustentação de um aerogerador de pequeno porte voltado a micro geração de energia. Para a condução da análise da falha foram realizados analises microscópicas, fractografias, análises macrograficas e modelagem em elementos finitos. Assim as causas das falhas foram identificadas, como má escolha de materiais e alguns erros no projeto da peça.

Current metallurgical processes lack selective and efficient REE recovery from aqueous leach liquors. Antisolvent crystallisation is used to selectively recover pure inorganic salts from aqueous solutions without excessive chemical use in ambient conditions. Yttrium sulfate octahydrate (Y2(SO4)3.8H2O) was used as a representative rare earth salt to investigate the effect of antisolvent selection on the crystal morphology and size distribution of the final crystalline product produced through antisolvent crystallisation. The antisolvents of choice were short length alcohols that are water miscible i.e. methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol and t-butanol. All experimental parameters except the type of antisolvent were kept constant under isothermal conditions. The large reduction in solubility of the salt by the antisolvent creates high supersaturations. This leads to high product yields as observed in this study at > 91%. In general, a variety of morphologies were successfully formed in each individual alcohol including; rods, plates, prismatic cubes and starburst clusters. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that Y2(SO4)3.8H2O was the only species present for all final products. There was a change observed from the starburst and rod structures for the shorter alcohols towards prismatic cubes for the longer alcohols due to different strengths in the solute-antisolvent interaction at the crystal growth faces. The crystal sizes increased with an increase in the alcohol chain length because of the lower supersaturation conditions due to a limit in the mass transfer induced by the bulkier alcohol structure. In conclusion, it has been shown that the particle morphology and size can be greatly affected by the selection of antisolvent even under high supersaturation conditions, contributing to understanding the effect of different antisolvents on the final particle characteristics. The engineering of favoured product characteristics can therefore be achieved by antisolvent crystallisation, presenting a viable alternative process for the recovery of REE. In- situ rock stresses were determined by flatjack and borehole - deformation methods . Estimates of the stress distribution around a flatjack were obtained by a combination of flatjack and borehole - gage techniques . The investigations were part of a study , conducted jointly by the State of California and the Federal Bureau of Mines , to determine the stress in rock at the site of an underground powerplant for the Oroville Dam near Oroville , California . The stress distribution around each of three flatjacks was nonsymmetric ; however , stresses obtained from 9 flatjack and 157 borehole measurements are considered reasonably accurate for engineering purposes . The stress near the edge of the openings is between 800 and 1,600 psi ; the stress in the undisturbed rock is approximately 500 psi , nearly hydrostatic .

The occurrence of borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo is well documented by McAnulty and Hoffer (1) and Lefond and Barker (2). Further investigation indicates the presence of priceite and meyerhofferite in addition to the howlite (1) and colemanite (2). Analcime occurs in addition to the clinoptilolite and phillipsite (2). The Mesa del Alamo area is about 200 !a south of Tucson, Arizona, and 13 km southeast of Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico, just south of the unpaved road to Cucurpe (Figure 1). The geology and mineralogy of northcentral Sonora is known only on a regional basis except for small areas mapped in detail during copper exploration. The study area is within the Basin and Range province of North America from which borates and zeolites are now produced in California. The borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo occur in geological environments similar to those of the Mojave and Death Valley regions of California (3, 4). Thus, a detailed exploration pro- gram in the Magdalena area could result in the discovery of economic borate and/or zeolite deposits.

This report describes a computer program devised by the Bureau of Mines to model coal-mining situations where one or more panels encounter oil or gas wells. The program seeks in several hundred trials to evade the wells if possible or to minimize their influence by shifting or skewing the mine plan and/or adjusting the centerline dimensions of the entryways. Upon completion of computations, the program sorts the hundreds of models which have been tested, and lists the 10 best with their associated parameters. It also draws a mine plan of the best configuration, showing the entryways and crosscuts along with the "lost" coal remaining in the barrier pillars surrounding the various wells.

THE hardenability of most steels can be predicted within 10 to 15 per cent provided the complete chemical composition is known, including "incidental" elements; and provided the as quenched grain size is known; and provided, finally, that the composition and heating temperatures for hardening are such as to result in austenite free from carbide particles. In method proposed herein, the steel is considered as having a base hardenability due to its carbon content alone (the hardenability of a "pure steel" of the given carbon content, without any other elements), and this base hardenability is multiplied by a multiplying factor for each chemical element present. After multiplying all these together, the final product is the hardenability. Grain size may be taken into account either in the base hardenability or after the multiplication. Hardenability is stated in terms of "ideal critical diameter"; namely, the diameter of bar, in inches, that will just harden all the way through (absence of unhardened core) in an "ideal" quench, and the calculation may also be related to the Jominy test. The data bring out certain features rather clearly. For example: I. It is quite useless to attempt to predict hardenability unless all elements, including "incidentals," are known; thus an "incidental" chromium content of o.-2o per cent increases the hardenability by about 50 per cent. 2. The relative effectiveness of different alloys is sometimes unexpected; thus molybdenum when calculated in this way appears to be of the same order of effectiveness as manganese, rather than much more powerful as would appear to be common experience; observe that an increase from no manganese to 0.20 per cent Mn provides a multiplying factor of 1.67, and an increase from no molybdenum to 0.2o per cent Mo provides a factor of 1.63, an increase of over 6o per cent in each case. However, if to a steel containing 0.50 per cent Mn there is added "20 points of manganese," the factor is raised from 2.65 (for 0.50 per cent Mn) to 3.35 (for 0.70 per cent Mn), or an increase of only 26 per cent. Thus the first small addition of an element has a much more powerful percentage effect than an equal further addition when some is already present, and in most cases the effect of molybdenum is considered in relation to a steel in which molybdenum is absent. 3. If two elements are equally effective, a greater harden ability will be obtained by using, for example, o.5 per cent of each than by using 1.0 per cent of either of them alone. 4. A knowledge of the as-quenched grain size is essential for precise work, since a difference of only one grain size number (say No. 7 instead of No. 6) makes a difference of almost 10 per cent in hardenability (in these units); this, however, does not apply to certain steels of high hardenability. It should be emphasized that in chromium steels (over 0.30 per cent Cr) and chrome-molybdenum and chrome-vanadium steels, undissolved carbides are likely to be present in the steel as quenched, and that in such cases the charts can indicate only a maximum possible hardenability, whereas the extent of hardening actually obtained may be much less. Thus tests on a number of chrome-molybdenum steels have indicated a degree of hardening amounting to only 50 to 65 per cent of the maximum possible, and in chromium steels from full hardening (100 per cent) down to as low as 70 per cent. On the other hand, when the amount of such elements is small (Cr under 0.30 per cent, Mo up to 0.25 per cent in the absence of Cr, and V up to 0.04 per cent), the charts provide reasonable approximations. The precise figures on the charts are suggested as tentative, subject to some modification as more data accumulate, but the fundamental concept appears to be supported by tests made on a wide variety of steels, a few of the correlations being shown in Fig. I.

Neste estudo foram utilizados 2 tipos de materiais sendo um de aço estrutural microligado ao nióbio e outro um aço C-Mn que foram submetidas a ensaios termomecânicos na máquina de torção. Os parâmetros de processamento como a temperatura, taxa de deformação, deformação, taxa de resfriamento e tempo entre passes tem uma relação com os fenômenos metalúrgicos e microestruturais. Foram realizados ensaios de torção com múltiplas deformações em resfriamento contínuo, isotérmicos contínuos e isotérmicos interrompidos com duas deformações. Através desses ensaios, foram levantadas as curvas de escoamento plástico das quais foram obtidas as deformações críticas para início da recristalização dinâmica, deformação de pico, parâmetro de amaciamento, temperaturas críticas (Tnr, Ar3 e Ar1) e tensão de escoamento média (TEM). No geral os resultados obtidos são semelhantes aos resultados da literatura e no caso da deformação crítica para início da recristalização, da deformação de pico e da tensão no estado estacionária pudemos aperfeiçoar as equações da literatura.

U. S. consumption of sulfur and sulfur products is expected to increase at a rate of 8 percent per year between now and 1980, largely as a result of their use in fertilizer markets. World consumption is also increasing rapidly, but at a-lower rate, about 6-percent per year. In 1965, sulfur recovered in the United States from purification of natural gas; nearly doubled from the 1956-1960 average; production from pyrites declined; and production of elemental sulfur increased 15 percent. Concern about air pollution resulting from sulfur oxides produced from the combustion of fossil fuel has lead to intensive research on methods of removal before combustion, during combustion (in-process methods), and from the resulting flue gases. If all the sulfur in fossill fuels were recovered, more sulfur products would be produced than were consumed in the United States in 1965. Removal of sulfur from coal before combustion could result in a product sufficiently-high in sulfur to be a suitable raw material for sulfuric acid manufacture. In-process methods produce solid sulfates, some of which may have commercial value. Flue gas removal' methods for sulfur oxidest generally result in the production of a byproduct either of sulfuric acid or sulfur. The projected sale of these materials significantly lowers the anticipated cost of sulfur dioxides pollution abatement. Alternate methods for sulfur dioxide reduction are discussed. The various proposed processes are described and costs are given for the various methods for which estimates have been made.

The Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology, developed in the 1970s, is now widely used for the processing of a range of materials. TSL technology for continuous converting was first patented in the 1990s. The process is based on the use of calcium ferrite slag. Although this slag system had been applied elsewhere the phase equilibria had not been thoroughly investigated. This lead to a collaboration between the Process Technology group of Mount Isa Mines, now part of Glencore, and the Pyrometallurgy Innovation Centre (PYROSEARCH) at The University of Queensland. Through multiple research programs this complex system was successfully investigated. The results were then implemented within thermodynamic modelling tools. This combined new knowledge was then applied to the design and industrial implementation of the TSL continuous converting technology, ISACONVERT™. This paper describes the key findings of the research and how this was applied to the industrial implementation of the technology.

No presente trabalho, foram avaliados os efeitos do tratamento térmico de alívio de tensões na microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas de juntas soldadas dos aços SA516-70 e SA387-11 (ambos aplicados na fabricação de vasos de pressão). Chapas com 40 mm de espessura de ambos os aços foram soldadas por arco elétrico com arame tubular e, posteriormente, submetidas a tratamento térmico para alívio de tensões. A variação de dureza ao longo da solda e a resistência à tração dos materiais soldados e tratados termicamente foi avaliada. A microestrutura dos materiais soldados foi acompanhada por microscopia ótica convencional. Por meio do tratamento térmico empregado foi possível observar a redução do nível de encruamento nos metais base e zonas termicamente afetadas das juntas em ambos os materiais com aumento de ductilidade no aço SA516-70.

To aid industry and Government in planning water developments the Bureau of Mines in 1963 canvassed mineral producers to determine water use in 1962. Water use by the mineral industry comprises only 2 percent of the water withdrawn by industry as a whole. The major water-using mineral industries are natural gas processing, phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore. Analysis indicated the following conclusions: 1. Total water use and new water intake is dependent on the quantity of material processed and the process water requirements of the particular indus- try or commodity. 2. Recirculation is dependent on the processing requirements of a par- ticular commodity, the manner in which the water is used, cooling and condens- ing requirements in certain large industries, the quality of new water intake, and the need to treat new and discharged water. 3. Consumed water is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, the temperature and humidity in the area, and the proportion of water used for cooling and condensing. 4. A threefold increase in water use by the mineral industry by 1985 is forecast.

El texto describe cuál es el planeamiento de la higiene industrial en la planta de peletización de Marcona Mining Co. Para esta labor, se debe evaluar el tipo de trabajo de la máquina, funcionamiento técnico y los materiales usados. En base a estos datos conocidos, se determina los riesgos inherentes en la producción, como de los riesgos profesionales inmediatos. La función primordial del programa de higiene industrial estriba en la formación somática, mental y emocional del trabajador para asegurar el lugar de ubicación donde este puede desarrollarse mejor, evitando arriesgar la integridad física del trabajador como de sus compañeros. Finalmente, se indica las reglas higiénicas generales como el ambiente higiénico de las horas libres del trabajador y su familia.

O agronegócio movimenta a economia de muitos países, sendo que sua produção representa um terço do PIB mundial. Desde a colheita até o processamento de seus produtos, a atividade agrícola gera uma grande quantidade de resíduos que, muitas vezes, não tem uma alocação correta, o que acaba sendo um problema. Esses resíduos tem um grande potencial para substituir parcialmente combustíveis fósseis, como o carvão mineral. O carvão queimado nos altos-fornos é responsável por cerca de 60% das emissões de CO2 na indústria siderúrgica. No entanto, a atividade agrícola pode contribuir para a captura de CO2 na atmosfera à medida que este é absorvido durante a fotossíntese. Portanto, o uso de resíduos do agronegócio pode ser viável para ser usado na injeção de alto-forno, substituindo parte do carvão mineral. Alguns estudos mostraram que o cultivo de cana-de-açúcar e a produção de carvão vegetal no Brasil, os resíduos do cultivo de milho nos Estados Unidos, bem como o uso de resíduos de Moringa oleifera na Índia, podem ser usados gerando economia e diminuindo a emissão de CO2. Neste trabalho, são apresentadas as comparações química, física e térmica de alguns resíduos do agronegócio com potencial para serem utilizados como material pulverizado injetado no alto-forno, junto ao carvão mineral. Além disso, a viabilidade econômica e a possibilidade de reduzir as emissões de CO2 nesse processo são comentadas.
