Neste estudo, analisou-se a fratura de dois pinos suporte de máquina injetora de material polimérico. Os segmentos dos pinos fraturados foram submetidos à análise das fraturas, análise química, análises microestruturais e microdureza. A falha ocorre sempre na mesma posição de encaixe do pino, onde se constatou uma folga superior a folga estipulada no projeto do equipamento. A análise química revelou que o aço usado é um aço para cementação de baixo teor de carbono ligado ao níquel e cromo. A análise de microdureza revelou a presença de uma camada cementada. A análise microestrutural detectou a presença de fases frágeis nos contornos de grão e grande heterogeneidade microestrutural, o que favoreceu a ruptura. A análise da fatura por microscopia eletrônica de varredura revelou aspecto frágil para ambos os pinos, com propagação instável de trinca. A análise de falha indicou que a folga excessiva associada a defeitos metalúrgicos foram os fatores que determinaram a falha.

Devido à carência de tarugos de alumínio 6060 com boa qualidade e baixo custo de produção no mercado de extrusão do Brasil, surge a necessidade de encontrar soluções práticas que resultem em um melhor desempenho das ligas na indústria da extrusão. Este trabalho, portanto, tem o objetivo de estudar a influência do tratamento térmico de homogeneização e da taxa de resfriamento pós-tratamento na microestrutura de uma liga de alumínio 6060, assim como as suas implicações na indústria de extrusão. Tarugos cilíndricos da liga de alumínio 6060, com diâmetro de sete polegadas, foram fabricados e submetidos a diferentes ciclos de tratamentos térmicos em um forno industrial do tipo bambury com a finalidade de dissolver e homogeneizar as partículas de segunda fase na matriz de alumínio. As variáveis de tratamento térmico investigadas neste estudo foram o tempo de residência e a taxa de resfriamento. Os tarugos termicamente tratados foram, em seguida, amostrados para caracterização microestrutural e para a execução de testes industriais de extrusão. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que existe uma significativa diferença microestrutural entre as amostras, que consistiu principalmente na variação das frações de precipitados de Mg2Si na matriz. Foi possível concluir que a produtividade na extrusão depende fortemente da fração desses precipitados.

Este estudo apresenta novos resultados que comprovam a confiabilidade e a repetibilidade das medições de cargas de abertura de trincas de fadiga obtidas em estudos anteriores [1,2], que foram usadas para questionar a hipótese proposta por Elber em 1970 de que a força motriz das trincas é a gama efetiva do fator de intensidade de tensões (?Kef). Para isto, dois corpos de prova DC(T), um fino com 2 mm e o outro grosso com 30 mm de espessura, foram usados em ensaios de propagação de trincas por fadiga sob ?K e Kmax quase constantes, para simular condições dominadas por tensão ou deformação plana. Medições redundantes de ?Kef foram feitas usando uma série de extensômetros colados ao longo do ligamento residual à frente da ponta da trinca, por outro extensômetro colado na face traseira do DC(T), e por um sistema independente de correlação digital de imagens (DIC), que mede o campo de deslocamentos na face do espécimem. As cargas de abertura medidas pelos três sistemas independentes foram similares, comprovando assim que suas variações significativas observadas durante o crescimento da trinca são metrologicamente confiáveis. Este resultado comprova que a propagação daquelas trincas por fadiga não foi controlada por ?Kef. As consequências desta conclusão são detalhadamente discutidas neste trabalho.

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

"The Oka Carbonatite and Alkaline Complex is a Lower Cretaceous intrusive body of the Monteregian petrographic province. Carbonate rocks of various types, and associated alkaline rocks of the ijolite and okaite suites, are distributed in a double ring-dyke structure 4 Yi miles long by 1 1/2 miles across. Alnoite and alrioite breccia pipes intrude all rocks of the Complex and indicate, from inclusions, that a cover of Palaeozoic rocks existed at the time of emplacement.The results of radiometric, magnetic and gravity surveys of the Complex are compiled and discussed both with respect to the regional pattern and, locally, the bed-rock geology. The Complex is characterized by high-intensity anomalies.Exploration activities started during 1953, and mining operations began in 1961 on the property of St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals Corporation, at one time the world's largest producer of niobium concentrates. Because of the boudinaged and fractured nature of many of the rocks and the variability in grade of the ore minerals, the role of the mining geologist is both demanding and exacting. Rock types are varied and their mutual relation-ships ambiguous, the minerals are rare and complex, and close geological control of the ore is needed in the mine and in the mill. Closely spaced diamond drill holes are needed for mining control, and the ore-waste contact is defined mainly by assay results.In the exploration for 'carbonatites' in Eastern Canada, aeromagnetic surveys are judged to be the best exploration tool, followed in decreasing order by the search for circular structures on aerial photographs, regional gravity surveys and radiometric surveys."

The plunging jet in tapping of steel from converters or electric arc furnaces entrains gas into the steel bath contained in a ladle. Gas entrainment rate and the effect of the gas on the flow pattern in the ladle are studied by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD. The work focuses on the mathematical modeling. Two numerical methods, one for free-surface flows and one for dispersed multiphase flow are combined. A transport equation for the average bubble diameter that incorporates the effect of coalescence and breakup is presented. Results from computations for one ladle and tapping configuration are shown. Our findings indicate that the gas entrainment rate is affected by the material properties of the liquid in the sense that the material properties determine the shape of the jet. Moreover, bubble sizes in the range of two-orders of magnitude are predicted in the ladle. The dispersed diameter model seems to work well. It showed the expected response to material parameters and the turbulent field. However, the presented analysis is just a first step that was limited due to certain simplifications. In order to obtain better insight in the tapping process improvements of the analysis seem necessary.

In its, effort to combat waterlogging and coil salinity, the later and Soils Investigation Division of WAPDA (West Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority) has carried out an extensive program of test drilling and water sampling, since 1954. Data collected during the past ten years have permitted the delineation of fresh and saline ground-water-zones in the Punjab Plain. Fresh ground water containing generally, less than 500 ppm (parts per million) of total dissolved solids is found in wide belts paralleling the major rivers and in other areas of fresh-water recharge. Locally, fresh ground water extends to depths of 1,500 feet and more. Saline ground water occurs downgradient from sources of recharge, particularly in the lower central parts of the interfluvial areas and, presumably, underlies most of the Punjab Plain. The ground waters of the Punjab are characterized by their evolution from calcium, magnesium bicarbonate waters, near sources of recharge, to waters containing a dominant proportion of sodium. The highly mineralized waters of the Punjab are generally of the sodium chloride type, whereas in Dera Ismail Khan District sodium sulfate waters predominate. The pattern of distribution of saline ground-water zones and the observed gradual increase in mineral content, downgradient from sources of recharge, can be explained best by a hypothesis stressing the processes of evaporation from the water table and solution of minerals within the alluvial aquifer.

Fibras de fique (Furcraea Andina) estão entre as lignocelulósicas naturais com grande potencial para utilização em compósitos poliméricos. O presente trabalho avalia a resistência ao impacto deste tipo de compósito com matriz epoxídica reforçada com diferentes percentuais de fibras de fique. As fibras foram embutidas sob pressão em mistura com resina epóxi DGEBA/TETA curada à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. Os corpos de prova normalizados foram confeccionados com percentuais de até 30% em volume de fibras de fique alinhadas ao longo de todo o comprimento, estes corpos de prova foram então ensaiados em pêndulo de impacto Charpy e as superfícies de fratura analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, MEV. A resistência ao impacto aumentou substancialmente com a quantidade relativa de fibra de fique reforçando o compósito. Este desempenho foi associado à dificuldade de ruptura imposta pelas fibras bem como ao tipo de trincas resultantes da interação fibra de fique/matriz epoxídica que ajuda a absorver a energia do impacto.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study of production costs for the secondary lead industry and determined costs for present, pending, and proposed environmental legislation. Operating costs for smelters by capacity groups range from 16.8 to 19.6 ¢!lb of refined lead. Present regulatory compliance costs for these groups range from 2.2 to 2.4 ¢!lb. Pending compliance costs could add 3.5 ¢!lb of refined lead, and proposed regulations could add another 1.3 ¢!lb. The individual capital costs necessary to comply with pending environmental regulations are estimated to be $1.8 million for small smelters and $10.4 million for large smelters. Proposed regulations could require additional expenditures from $1.9 million for small smelters to $4.9 million for large smelters. These cost estimates, based on average 1985 dollars, indicate that pending and proposed legislation could add significantly to capital and operating costs of the secondary lead industry. These regulatory compliance costs may result in a loss of up to 40 pet of secondary lead production capacity.

The author has covered •briefly the location of the heavy •and asphalt-base oil fields, their geology, current drilling and production practice, the location of the •refineries capable of handling heavy crude, their products and markets, and the problems and future prospects of the industry.Location and Description of FieldsThe term heavy oil is generally used to denote crude of 20.9° gravity and under. Since the products from heavy oil are also to a lesser extent obtained from asphalt-base crudes of higher gravity, some mention will be made here of the latter; but in general the emphasis of the paper is on heavy oil as such.In the order of their production to date, the heavy oil fields and those light oil fields which produce asphalt-base crudes are : Lloydminster, Taber, Vermilion, Conrad, Princess, and Wainwright.The Lloydminster oil field has not only produced most of the heavy oil, but also is currently the largest producer, supplying at the present time about 80 per cent of the heavy and asphalt-base crudes produced in Western Canada."

Foram fabricados compósitos de matriz de cobre, reforçados com grafeno a partir da mistura de uma dispersão de óxido de grafeno com pó de cobre eletrolítico. A dispersão foi produzida pelo método de Hummers modificado e caracterizada por espectroscopia Raman e difração de raios X. Os compósitos foram fabricados pelo processo de metalurgia do pó convencional. Os pós de compósitos foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, os corpos de prova consolidados foram avaliados quanto a densificação a verde e do corpo sinterizado, e os corpos sinterizados foram submetidos a ensaio de compressão a fim de verificar a resistência dos compósitos.

"The smelter slags represented silicate crystalline rock with medium to coarse-grained structure with spinifex skeletal network of olivine in hedenbergite matrix. Accessory magnetite, pyrrhotite and copper sulfides chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, chalcocite and digenite occurred in dissemination in silicate matrix. The sample was studied by optical and electron microscopy with support of quantitative XRD. Modal mineralogical composition included olivine, pyroxene, magnetite, chalcopyrite, quartz, pyrrhotite. Copper deportment showed copper distributed in chalcopyrite (40 %), cuprite (22 %), covellite (21 %), bornite, chalcocite, digenite (5 %), Cu-bearing pyrrhotite (4 %) and spinel (2%). Liberation of copper minerals in the material ground to P80=71 µm was good with over 90 % sulfides in free grains and floatable binaries. The results showed theoretical possibility of 65 % copper recovery by flotation. Conclusion based on mineralogical data was precisely confirmed with flotation tests studies that proved to recover around 60 % of copper to commercial grade concentrate. INTRODUCTION Annual world copper matte smelter slags production is estimated to be millions of tones and contain thousands tones of unrecovered Cu, Zn and significant amounts of Ag and Au. Mineralogical study of one large processing sample of material of historical piles of Cu matte smelter slag was carried out to find possibility to recover copper and define theoretical recovery by flotation. The study of the slag material was aimed to determine possibility of upgrading the material on existing copper flotation plant to develop additional mineral resources. The objectives for mineralogical investigation were to target for best liberation fineness, determine theoretical recovery and possible concentrate quality for sulfide flotation tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS Large representative processing sample was collected by mixing of 120 t of slag material representatively excavated from historical piles of Cu matte smelter slag. The sample was used to define the processing technology to recover copper and gold from the material."

Environmental regulators are increasingly adopting risk-based approaches to protect aquatic ecosystems. The Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) and the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (ARMCANZ) (2000) introduced a risk-based approach to water quality guidelines that use decision frameworks to adapt water quality guidelines to local environmental conditions. Environmental quality objectives are no longer a simple ‘pass or fail’ number such as restricting total suspended solids (TSS) concentration to a specified limit for a particular rainfall event. This approach ignores spatial and temporal variability and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. The risk-based approach establishes levels where adverse effects may occur. If these objectives are not met, further risk-based investigation is undertaken to assess the potential impact to the ecosystem. Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) developed a dynamic simulation to predict the variability of sediment discharges, which is applicable for risk-based impact assessment of aquatic ecosystems. The application of the methodology over the life of a mine site is illustrated using a proposed South Pacific mine.The site location is in extremely rugged terrain with a high annual rainfall of approximately 4.7 m. There were two major sediment ponds proposed to reduce sediment discharges. A sediment and hydrology model was developed in Goldsim to provide daily estimates of run-off flows and sediment concentrations. A modified algorithm based on the Australian water balance model was created and incorporated into the Goldsim model and calibrated using recorded field data.The sediment module was developed based on a Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) assessment, an annual prediction of soil loss over a catchment. A land-use type erosion vector was developed for different land-use types and for each of the subcatchments, a subcatchment erodibility vector was calculated. This vector and the daily rainfall erosivity factor were used to estimate the daily soil loss. The estimated soil loss and the modelled run-off yielded predictions of daily sediment concentrations. Finally, a sediment settling module was used to predict the daily efficiency of the sediment ponds and hence discharged sediment concentrations.The results of this modelling form the first part of a quantitative risk-based assessment into suspended solids impacts. The second part is the assessment of the effects of these predicted TSS concentrations on aquatic ecology. As part of the feedback-loop required in a risk management framework, if the environmental quality objectives are not met then further management decisions and actions may be required to reduce the risks presented by suspended solids. This may include modifications to: the mine-development plan; construction techniques and scheduling; processing techniques; rehabilitation strategies; or hard-engineering solutions such as sediment basins or flocculation.The Goldsim water-balance model provides a quick and efficient method of testing potential remedial actions on predicted sediment loads and concentrations. In combination with a cost-benefit assessment, options for reducing sediment releases from the mine site can be effectively and quantitatively compared thereby providing mine operators with a basis for decision-making. Regulators can also be satisfied that potential impacts to aquatic ecology have been comprehensively assessed and the necessary management decisions have been initiated to limit risk to the environment.CITATION:Ind, M and Usher, B, ?2014. Investigou-se a extração seletiva de Ca e Mg do licor sulfúrico concentrado de Ni visando sua purificação. Observou-se que a mistura sinérgica dos extratantes D2EHPA + ácido naftênico apresenta maior afinidade na extração de Ca em pH = 5. Comportamento oposto foi verificado pelo extratante Cyanex 272, cuja preferência de extração é pelo Mg para 5 = pH = 6. A cinética de extração de Ca e Mg é rápida atingindo o equilíbrio em menos de 6 minutos. A purificação do licor de Ni requer a utilização de 2 circuitos de extração em operações estagiadas. No primeiro circuito, Ca pode ser removido do licor empregando-se o sistema orgânico D2EHPA (10% v/v) + ácido naftênico (20% v/v). O pH ótimo é 3,5, no qual foram extraídos 72% de Ca (ßCa/Ni = 40) em uma contatação. No segundo circuito, o licor deve ser submetido a uma extração de Mg pelo Cyanex 272 (20% v/v). O pH operacional propício é 5,5 com extração de 66% de Mg (ßMg/Ni = 16, uma contatação). O licor purificado de Ni pode ser encaminhado à etapa de eletrorrecuperação almejando-se a obtenção de Ni metálico.

An innovative process to treat transition metal oxide waste materials from diverse sources is presented. This technology involves using reverse-polarity DC plasma driven electrolysis in molten oxides. The process results in the recovery of the transition metal and other heavy metals from waste. By-products generated throughout the processing was converted to environmentally acceptable slag. The significance of this technology is that the treatment of the waste is accomplished in one step which in turn lowers the cost of remediation. Moreover, this process uses high temperature properties of thermal plasmas, which makes it possible to use molten oxides instead of halides as electrolytes. Chromium was successfully reduced from chromium oxide through the plasma driven electro-reduction process. It was shown that the selection of the appropriate ionic conducting oxides was critical for the formation of a slag that would enhance the reduction of chromium oxide.

Objective: The Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) provides a first step in roof behavior awareness. By understanding and measuring roof movement in an underground mine, the potential for injuries or fatalities to mine workers from fall of ground can be lessened. Also, officials at an underground mine with a history of data on roof movement are better prepared to make a decision on remedial actions if falls of ground become a problem. The RMSS provides a safer, simple, and inexpensive means for measuring roof movement.

The massive sulphides containing ore values in zinc, lead, copper and silver were discovered in 1953 as a result of a joint venture between the American Metal Company and the International Nickel Company of Canada. The discovery was named after Mr. Heath Steele, manager of exploration for Amco at the time of the discovery.Mill production began in February 1957; however, the mine was forced to shutdown in 1958 due to depressed metal prices and metallurgical problems. It was re-opened in 1962 and milling operations resumed at 725 t/d until 1968 when the milling capacity was boosted to 1450 t/d and then to 2700 t/d in 1969.OreThe main ore zones are massive sulphides with very fine mineral grain. The chalcopyrite, galena and marmatitesphalerite occurrences are finely disseminated.Liberation is accomplished by grinding to 68% to 72% <400 mesh. Average mill feed assays are 0.8% to 1.2% copper, 1.8% to 2.5% lead, and 5.5% to 6.5% zinc, with 60 to 75 g/t silver."
