Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) is a promising thermal insulator for high temperature environments due to its thermal stability and chemical inertness. As was demonstrated with other technical ceramics (e.g., Alumina), addition of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) to a ceramic matrix may significantly enhance the mechanical properties of the composite ceramic. In this work, 8 mol% YSZ with 0.2, 0.5 and 1wt% CNTs composites were prepared via Spark Plasma Sintering process. The densification, Vicker’s microhardness, specific gravity and microstructure evolution of the composites were investigated. The results suggest that the addition of up to 1wt% CNTs to YSZ yielded optimal combination of the studied properties. At higher addition levels, the specific gravity decreased and clustering of CNTs occurred, leading to poor densification and a relative loss of performance.

"This paper proposed a new method of Mg and Cl2 circulating for titanium sponge production by direct pyrolysis and thermal reduction process. Effects of pyrolysis temperature, pyrolysis time and partial pressure of oxygen on pyrolysis efficiency were researched, and the crystallite structural transformation of MgO productions at different pyrolysis temperature and time were analyzed by XRD. The experimental results indicates that the pyrolysis temperature and time effects the pyrolysis efficiency obviously, and the reasonable pyrolysis conditions by using MgCl2 in molten state are as follows: the pyrolysis temperature is 1100?, pyrolysis time is 60min and the partial pressure of oxygen is 100%, the pyrolysis efficiency get above 95% at this conditions. The dynamic analysis of molten magnesium chloride pyrolysis reaction shows that, as a chemical reaction process control, the response of the apparent activation energy Ea=70.4 kJ/mol.IntroductionTitanium is a young metal, it is applied in industrial until the Second World War. It is 160 years from the discovery of titanium to the industrial production of ductility titanium by magnesium reduction method in the United States in 1948. As a new kind of metal, titanium and titanium material are better than the traditional metal materials in mechanical properties, heat resistance and thermal conductivity. Titanium is a kind of landmark structure and function material, which is called “space metal”, “Marine metal”, “Intelligent metal” [1-3]. Although the study of new methods of titanium melting get more at present, Kroll method and Hunter method are really applied to industrial production methods for titanium smelting, and Hunter method is already discontinued because of costs at present. The core technology in Kroll method of sponge titanium production process can be ome down to two circulation, namely the cycle of magnesium and chlorine in preparation-process of titanium sponge. In the traditional Kroll method, the cycle is realized through magnesium chloride which is produced by the electrolytic magnesium reduction process in hot molten state. But because investment of equipment for electrolysis method is too high, this method has not been used by most titanium sponge production enterprise in China. At present most titanium sponge production enterprise in China produce titanium sponge by the outsourcing of titanium tetrachloride, but the main disadvantage of this method is that the by-product of magnesium chloride is difficult to deal with."

The influence of flux CaO2–Al ratio on the Self propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS)-casting reaction products in WO3–Si–Al system has been investigated in this study. Incorporation of CaO2–Al amounting to 1–5 wt% of total charge has been found to be adequate to form WSi2 intermetallic with a maximum hard-W5Si3 secondary phase. The micro-hardness of tungsten silicides intermetallic product increased significantly with CaO2–Al ratio. The as-SHS-casting products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) technique.

El presente estudio señala la interpretación de los balances de una empresa minera de acuerdo con las disposiciones legales existentes y la práctica establecida en el país. En esta interpretación de balances se ha utilizado ciertos índices como el de balance general, cuenta de ganancias y pérdidas, balance con las ganancias y pérdidas, origen y aplicación de fondos, donde la experiencia resulte de mayor utilidad en el análisis de compañías mineras. Dentro de los índices de balance general están las fuentes del capital, distribución y la inversión del mismo. Entre los índices que analizan la cuenta de ganancias y pérdidas está el control de costo y resultados de la operación. Los índices que relacionan el balance con las ganancias y pérdidas son los coeficientes de rotación, rotación de inventario y distribución de los accionistas. Finalmente, el índice del origen y aplicacíón de fondos, indica la procedencia de los nuevos fondos ingresados en el ejercicio considerado (origen) y hacia dónde se destinan (aplicación).

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. [This report describes preliminary tests of samples from six deposits of oxidized copper ores .in Nevada. The tests for the most part were confined to laboratory-scale acid leaching to extract the copper.'The exceptions consisted of flotation tests to demons' ate the possibilities of treating the ore by that method. The samples tested were representative of oxidized copper ores from six counties in all parts of Nevada. The results obtained by the preliminary tests described were indicative of the extractions of copper to be expected, In the five leaching experiments, the approximate consumption of acid was also indicated.]

"Although a large number of processes have been developed and applied to the separation of barite from other minerals, there is a lack of information in the literature about the separation of barite from iron ores. Nowadays, there are millions of tonnes of iron ore disposed as a waste or tailings given its high content of sulphur in the form of barite. In order to effectively separate barite from iron ore and ensure that mining business is truly creating economic and sustainable values, this paper provides a greater understanding of barite properties, the origin and occurrence of this barium-bearing mineral, and the employed beneficiation processes. A test work is conducted in a barite bearing iron ore from a deposit located in the Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) in order to separate the barite and check if a marketable by-product can be produced by drawing upon rich barite tailings. INTRODUCTION The exploration of iron ore containing barite results in a large amount of unrecovered material. The main difficulty in processing and using barite bearing iron ores is given by their high content of sulphur, silica and barium, which are unwanted chemical compounds in the subsequent processes in iron industry. As a result, millions of tonnes of iron ore are discarded every year into tailings or as a waste, which results in production losses, higher operation costs and environmental impacts (Praes et al. 2013). Therefore, the separation of barite from iron ores not only means reducing the environmental impact, but also an opportunity to generate income and beneficiate society. The beneficiation of barite bearing iron ores is a subject which requires a deeper investigation to solve the challenges faced by the iron industry. There are only a few studies that describe flowsheets proposed for the production of barite concentrate of iron ores. The most likely reason for this gap is that barite is frequently exploited commercially as a primary product rather than a by-product. In order to effectively separate barite from iron ore and ensure that mining business is truly creating economic and sustainable values, this paper provides a greater understanding of barite properties, the origin and occurrence of this barium-bearing mineral, and the employed beneficiation processes. A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved previous to January 1, 1942, was published In Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The present list covers additional equipment approved during the calendar year 1942. The items have been numbered to indicate the order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gives four air compressors on the Bureau's active list, and the present circular gives the fifth to be approved. Items 90 and 94 under Loading; Machines land Conveyors also appear in Information Circular 7207. These numbers are repeated hero to show that approval was granted during 1942 for additional voltages on machines previously listed one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those which may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that arc available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining. The present paper and Information Circular 7207 together give the complete list of all available permissible .Mine equipment.

Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes.Water is routed to the roof bolter fromthe main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/ m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box, the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3, a 60% reduction in respirable dust concentration. The quartz content of the roofmaterialwas high, ranging from 28.9 to 52.7%during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60% when cleaning the collector boxes.

O trabalho se baseia na redução do retorno parcial de aço por temperatura na Aciaria LD com foco em análise estatísticas do processo, melhorias no projeto alinhado ao plano de manutenção dos componentes mecânicos e elétricos do sistema de aquecimento de panelas. Para análise do problema foi elaborado um estudo utilizando Lean Six Sigma através do DMAIC, analisando as condições de processo, procedimento operacional e plano de manutenção dos equipamentos. Como resultado do trabalho obteve-se uma redução em 58% no retorno parcial em panelas de aquecedor.

Preliminary work in the investigation of electrolytic manganese, as reported J, showed promise for a practical procedure of continuous production. Laboratory work was continued in the direction of process simplification to determine an economically feasible procedure that mould require a minimum of expensive equipment for plant erection and a minimum of regent consumption for operation. Results furnished enough evidence to indicate that modifications of the process could be made leading to simplified procedure and with no sacrifice in operating efficiency. A supply of at least 200 pounds of the metal was desired for alloy research, and it was believed worth Mile to utilize available facilities in a search for difficulties, that were not encountered in the laboratory and that might arise in larger-scale operation. Consequently, an experimental pilot plant was erected. The plant was designed for a capacity of 15 rounds per day of metal and operated under simulated -plant practice.

Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. La unidad de producción de Cerro de Pasco, perteneciente a la Compañía minera del Centro del Perú, cuenta con importantes reservas de minerales piríticos argentíferos que son tratados en la planta concentradora de San Expedito. Dicho concentrado es usualmente empleado como funderte en el circuito de cobre de la fundición de La Oroya. Sin embargo, dada la finura del material, su porcentaje se ha visto reducido. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala una alternativa para recuperar la plata contenida en el concentrado mineral a través de un análisis mineralógico del concentrado pirítico. Posteriormente, se describe el proceso combinado piro-hidrometalúrgico que consiste en la tostación-lixiviación, precipitación con polvo de zinc y la refinación hidrometalúrgica. Finalmente como apoyo a la técnica señalada, se agrega el análisis económico para Centromin.

Several research projects have been conducted in the western United States to determine the optimum soil replacement thickness for reconstruction of rangeland and cropland. However, the information gained from these studies tends to be site-specific and not broadly applicable. Moreover, the possible interaction between soil thickness and mechanical and fertilizer manipulation of the overburden has not been adequately studied. To meet these information needs, research was initiated at Trapper Mine in northwestern Colorado in 1980 to study vegetation response to soil thicknesses of 15,30,45, and 60 cm and five manipulations that included disking, ripping, and fertilizing. All crops were harvested at peak standing crop and then weighed in the laboratory. Wheat grain yields were highest when soil thickness was 45 cm and the soil and overburden were ripped. Alfalfa yields appeared to be highest when overburden was disked and fertilized and soil was replaced to a thickness of 60 cm. For range vegetation, standing crop biomass was highest when overburden was ripped and soil was replaced to 60 cm thick. However, optimum performance was obtained from the maximum number of species and life forms by disking overburden and replacing 15 cm of soil. The performance of most range plant species has improved over the three years of the study. When the results of this study are compared to the results of other soil thickness studies, we can conclude that selection of management practices should be influenced by local climate, local soil and overburden conditions, type of crop or vegetation to be grown, and specific management goals for that crop or vegetation.

One phase of Bureau of Mines' work in health and safety is promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective. devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for self-contained breathing apparatus, gas masks, supplied-air respirators. (hose masks, air-line respirators, and abrasive blasting helmets, hoods, or masks), dispersoid (dust, fume, and mist) respirators, and nonemergency gas respirators (chemical cartridge respirators). Approval tests of self-contained breathing apparatus are conducted by the Safety Branch; approval tests of other types of respiratory protective equipment are conducted by the Health Branch. Both branches are in the Health and Safety Division.

The wide spread introduction of SAG mills into grinding circuits 20 years ago was the last development which had a major impact on the design and economics of comminution circuits. Single SAG mills were able to replace batteries of high maintenance and cost intensive crushers in order to achieve high throughput operations. Today, where the head grades of gold and copper ores are falling, there is again a strong need for a significant breakthrough to reduce investment and operating costs as well as improve metal recoveries. High-pressure grinding rolls is the new technology available to meet this challenge. HPGRÆs are state-of-the-art in several mining and minerals applications such as the grinding of iron ores and concentrates, and diamond bearing ores. Reasons for their success in these industries are overall cost reductions and improved product properties achieved by the application of high compressive forces. But these ores are relatively soft, with unconfined compressive strengths up to 150 Mpa.

Total suspended solids (TSS), generally referred to simply as sediment, is one of the four major parameters of water pollution associated with surface mining activities. The other three para¬meters are iron, manganese and pH. Currently the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in the process of developing and implement¬ing effluent limitations for these pollutants pursuant to section 301 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972, 33 USC 1811.1 To date, effluent guidelines for existing point sources have been published, and guidelines for new sources are forthcoming. The effluent limits which have already been developed for TSS have been subjected to some controversy.1 Some industry spokesmen have indicated that they may be unable to meet these effluent limitation guidelines for TSS. The industry claims that in certain areas the suggested limit is unattainable since high suspended solid loads already exist in streams due to numerous and various sources of nonpoint pollution which include agriculture, silviculture and urban construction for which no TSS effluent limits have been set. An opposite viewpoint asserts that the TSS limitations are too lenient since permit data from the Regions (U.S. EPA Regions) indicates present compliance for several companies under more stringent TSS limits. The experience at the Centralia mine in Washington is one example.2

THE metallurgical polarization microscope has been utilized in several researches in the last few years, thus attaining a fair degree of prominence, but little has been written in a manner suitable to a metallurgist concern-ing the theory of this instrument. In this investigation the theory was carefully studied, and the results are presented here in a detailed manner, yet as simply as possible. The theory is discussed with particular reference to the three chief functions of the instrument: (1) determination of anisotropy; (2) effect of strain; and (3) identification of inclusions. Each of these is investigated experimentally, with especial attention to the mechanism of producing any effect. Where possible, the discussion is supplemented by photomicrographs. The instrument used had numerous defects as a polarization microscope; these and their remedies are discussed. In the microscopic study of transparent mineral sections (chal-cography) the use of polarized light has aided tremendously in the identification of a mineral. The determination of strain in transparent substances (photoelasticity) by the use of polarized light has lately become a commercial process, used in testing finished glass articles. The success of the use of polarized light with opaque materials has not been so great. The magnitude of the effects obtained is much less than that of the corresponding effects with transparent materials, and the mechanical difficulties are much greater. Gas analysis is of great practical value to the combustion engineer as a guide in the proper deli and operation of power and heating plants. The automotive industry, however, has made little use of gas analysis in the design and construction of engines. Tests4 made by the Bureau of Mines have shorn that for the average motor vehicle approximately 30 per cent of the heat value of the gasoline passes out in the exhaust as incomplete-combustion products. The tendency at present is to pay more attention to ease and flexibility of operation than to efficiency of combustion. However, neither condition can be fully realized except where each cylinder gets a mixture of the same composition - that is, when certain cylinders do not "load up" with gas at the expense of the others. When this occurs, due to some of the cylinders having too rich a mixture while in others it is too lean, it is impossible to get efficient combustion from the fuel used. Gas analysis enables the engineer to determine the quality of the mixture fed to the different cylinders with a high degree of precision. Briefly, the method consists in making an analysis of the exhaust gas from each cylinder while the engine is in operation.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a soldabilidade do aço da classe API 5L X80 de fabricação nacional quanto ao trincamento pelo hidrogênio. Para isto, o aço foi soldado pelo processo arame tubular usando como metal de adição o arame AWS E110-MC com 1,6 mm de diâmetro e como gás de proteção a mistura 75% Argônio+25%CO2. Foram adotados quatro níveis de energia de soldagem, 0,7 kJ/mm, 1,10kJ/mm, 1,60 kJ/mm e 2,00 kJ/mm e o ensaio de soldabilidade utilizado foi o WIC. Para as quatro energia de soldagem foi constatada a presença de trincas que iniciavam na região de grãos grosseiros da ZTA (RGGZTA) e se pronunciavam para a zona fundida (ZF). A ZTA apresentou um comportamento microestrutural com presença de bainita e a ZF com predominância de ferrita acicular. A microdureza na ZF foi superior em relação às demais regiões.
