Na última década, com o crescente aumento da demanda na produção de aço, as usinas siderúrgicas estão, cada vez mais, procurando soluções que tornem seus processos mais ágeis e economicamente competitivos, sem perder qualidade do produto final. O presente trabalho visou a uma avaliação post mortem dos tijolos refratários utilizados em carros torpedo. Esse estudo foi feito através das técnicas de difração de raios-X (DRX) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) associada à espectroscopia de energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDS), com o intuito de se avaliar as modificações estruturais nos materiais em estudo (refratários TCP e TCE). Com base nos resultados obtidos foi possível verificar modificações estruturais mais significativas nos tijolos refratários TCE após o uso com base na incorporação de material associada à escória na sua superfície, o qual contribui para um aumento significativo na sua densidade.

Coal degradation is the breakage of coal particles to finer sizes due to the continuous forces of attrition and gravity to which coal is subjected during mining, handling and preparation. The objective of this paper is to determine the extent of degradation that a coal slurry experiences when transported through pumps and pipelines. The examination of degradation results for a number of different coal slurries have indicated that the extent of breakage is dependent upon the physical properties of coal and the time span of circulation. These results have also indicated that certain size fractions of coal are more susceptible to breakage than others.

Flocculation behaviour of six different dolomite samples, four from the Florida mining district, one from Perry, South Georgia and another from New Jersey was examined using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. The samples were similar in chemical composition, however the porosity of the samples from the Florida mining district was higher than the others. FT-IR, adsorption and surface modification by leaching revealed that flocculation was directly related to the presence of isolated hydroxyl groups on the surface. The adsorption mechanism was believed to be hydrogen bonding of the ether oxygen of PEO with isolated -OH sites on the solid.

This report summarizes the results of metallurgical investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of manganese oxide ore, averaging 23 to 25 percent manganese, stockpiled at the Butte-Philipsburg depot of General Services Administration (GSA). The oxide ores were stockpiled in two general classifications, straight oxide ore and mixed oxide-carbonate ore. Continuous-circuit flotation tests at the Albany (Oreg.) Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines showed that each of these ore types could be concentrated by an oil-emulsion scheme to produce a concentrate that could be sintered to meet program specifications. About 88 percent of the manganese was recovered in the concentrate from the straight oxide sample, with the sintered concentrate containing 48 percent Mn. The sintered concentrate from the mixed oxide-carbonate sample contained 41 percent Mn with a recovery in the concentrate of 95 percent.

At a time of great antiquity when our Yomato tribe had not yet found its way throughout the country, there lived in Japan barbarous tribes of the stone age, whose dwellings were vertical caves covered with roof's of twigs and weeds. In a cave lately discovered at the village of Morita, 10 miles west from the port of Aomori, there were found pieces of micaceous iron-ore and psilomelane, with oval holes pierced from both sides. Apparently these objects were regarded as ornaments or curios, without being applied to any practical use. Among the traditions given in the Nihonshoki, an ancient history of Japan, there is one relating to the mining industry. According to this tradition, in the mythological age Izanami-no-Mikoto gave birth to Kanayamahiko-no-Mikoto, god of mines, and Amaterasu-Okami (the sun-goddess) was armed with swords. It came to pass at one time that she concealed herself in Ama-no-Iwato ("Heavenly Cave"), and several gods made contrivances to entice her out. Among them, Ishikori-dome, a smith, made a mirror with copper obtained from the Ama-no-Kagoyama, by means of a pair of bellows known as the Ama-no-habuki, which was made of a deer-skin. It is recorded also that Susanb-no-Mikoto, her younger brother, observed the abundance of gold and silver in Korea, where his descendants were to reign, and urged them to provide themselves with boats to convey them across the Sea of Japan. THE last decade of the 19th century was a peculiarly interesting one in. the annals of American metallurgy, especially as concerns the lead and copper- smelting industries; and it may be interesting to review briefly one of the outstanding incidents of that period, the development of the mechanical roasting furnace. I shall not pretend, in these reminiscences, to give with absolute accuracy the sequence of events or dates, nor to present a complete history of the period, but shall seek merely to 'sketch a more or less impressionistic picture with some of the underlying facts and causes as the recollection comes back to me and then point out how the present-day practice grew out of those activities. My acquaintance with the developments in Montana was based on occasional visits and general collateral information, but in Colorado I lived through the episode and was of it.

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. The pH control system at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Nevada Mines Division concentrator consists of two independent systems, lime dilution and lime addition. Lime dilution is accomplished in a mixing tank where slaked lime and water are introduced proportionately. The desired dilution of the milk of lime is determined by the electrical inputs provided by eight pH probes, one per grinding section. The inputs are averaged and applied to a time base generator. The summation output of the time base generator determines the proportion of lime and water that are to be mixed and applies this input to a voltage sensitive switching device. The switching device provides a signal to one of two relays which will add either slaked lime or water, dependent upon the summation output. The entire cycle is based on a two-minute repetition rate to allow for sufficient mix time. Responsivity is controlled by maintaining a limited maxi- mum solution level in the mix tank. Lime addition is controlled independently within each grinding section. The electrical input from the pH probe in a given section controls the solenoid valves which provide lime to each of the ball mills. The valves remain open within a time range capable of maintaining the pH of flotation feed at a given set point.

The technical excellence of separation achieved in a mineral concentration process, or any other process where two constituents of any kind are physically separated from each other, is expressed uniquely and quantitatively by the Separation Efficiency: ES = (R ? Rg) where R is the percentage of the valuable constituent and Rg the percentage of the waste appearing in the concentrate. The Separation Efficiency meets all the usual requirements of a true efficiency and is independent of the nature of the process used. It can be visualized as the percentage of the feed material that, in effect, actually undergoes complete separation while the rest of the feed is distributed randomly and unchanged into the two separation products.

Extraction of isolated blocks of ground with elevated levels of stress and/or seismicity is a common occurrence in South African gold mines. Isolated blocks of ground that are divorced from the main orebody and are bound by complex, dip and strike parallel, non-persistent geological structures dominate the Klerksdorp gold fields. No quantifiable methods exist to assess the risk associated with mining these and other classes of remnants. A case history, from a gold mine that planned to extract three remnant blocks hosted in a large complex fault system, is used to illustrate the decision making process based on a combination of underground observations, numerical and seismic techniques. Simple risk estimation matrices were developed and used to estimate remnant-mining risk and finally to quantify the decision on which of the three remnant blocks could be extracted at the lowest possible geo-mechanical risk. Il est courant dans les mines aurifères sud-africaines d’extraire des blocs de terrain isolés qui possèdent des niveaux élevés de contraintes et/ou sismicité. Les régions aurifères de Klerksdorp sont dominées par des blocs de terrain isolés qui sont séparés du gisement principal et qui sont retenus par des structures géologiques non continues, à parallèle de pendage et direction, et complexes. Il n’existe pas de méthodes quantifiables pour évaluer le risque associé à l’extraction de ce genre et autres genres de résidus. Une observation de cas, celle d’une mine d’or qui avait l’intention d’extraire trois blocs de résidus qui se trouvaient dans un grand système complexe de faille, est utilisée pour illustrer le processus décisionnel basé sur une combinaison d’observations souterraines, et de techniques numériques et sismiques. Des matrices simples d’estimation de risque furent développées et utilisées pour estimer le risque lié à l’extraction des résidus et finalement pour quantifier la décision sur lequel des trois blocs de résidus pouvait être exploité au moindre risque géo-mécanique. Einfache Gefahreinschätzungsmatrizen wurden entwickelt und angewendet um das Abbaurestrisiko abzuschätzen und letztendlich die Entscheidung zu quantifizieren, welcher der drei Einschlußblöcke unter dem niedrigst möglichen geo-mechanischen Risiko extrahiert werden konnte .

The removal of phosphorus is essential 1n order to increase the recycling of steelmaking slags for their manganese, iron and lime contents. This study aims at establishing the phosphorus mineralogy and its distribution in steelmaking slags, the effect of slow cooling, and the methods of phosphorus removal. A series of steelmaking slag samples was prepared at different cooling rates, and the mineralogy, chemistry and grain size of the samples were investigated with SEM/EDS and x-ray diffraction. The test results using high gradient magnetic separation are discussed.

THERE has been probably no improvement introduced into the manufacture of iron which created more surprise in the minds of practical smelters and of scientific men than Neilson's discovery of the hot blast. In 1829, Messrs. Dunlop & Co. consumed at the Clyde Works, near Glasgow, nearly 7 3/4 tons of coal to make a ton of pig iron, of which about 20 cwts. was employed under the boilers of the blowing engines, leaving nearly 7 tons for the consumption of the furnace itself. In the year 1833, by heating the air to 612° F. (322° C.), they reduced the 7 3/4 tons to 3 tons by the mere burning of 8 cwts. of coal in the apparatus for raising the blast to this temperature. The statement just given is strictly true in a commercial sense, but when we come to consider the question as one of physical science, it is necessary to eliminate some of the conditions which conduced to so extraordinary a result. Anterior to Neilson's time the fuel employed in smelting iron was coke, and it was supposed at that period, erroneously, however, that coal in its raw state, when burned with cold air, was totally unfit for the purpose in question. This mineral, as it was obtained from the Lanarkshire coal-field, contained about 35 per cent. of volatile matter, but the process of charring it was performed in so unskilful a manner that instead of receiving 88 cwts. of coke from 135 cwts. of coal, 60 cwts. only was the product of the operation. Again, the reduced consumption of carbon in the furnace itself was accompanied by a corresponding diminution of blast, and this was followed by an economy of half a ton in engine coal. After making a proper allowance, however, for all these collateral circumstances, we are within the mark when we admit that in actual coke, which is really the form the fuel has to assume before it is burnt in the blast-furnace, not less than 30 cwts. was saved by heating the blast to 615° F. (322° C.). This unexpected economy, be it remembered, was obtained by the combustion of the 8 cwts. of coal, somewhat wastefully applied in the hot-air apparatus. Procedures for the determination of the operating point that results when a fan is connected to a mine and placed in operation have been a source of confusion for decades. A variety of techniques has been proposed, often to the detriment of the practicing ventilation engineer trying to apply the techniques to the multitudinous mine/fan matching problems encountered in the engineering of mine ventilation systems. This paper proposes some different assumptions and definitions that simplify the solution of problems in determining the operating point. As a result, a set of procedures is provided for determining the operating point of a mine/fan system when the outlet areas of the mine and fan are known. To establish a major simplification in the development of procedures for the determination of the operating point for a mine/fan combination, the authors suggest that the mine pressures be redefined and then used in such a manner that the conservation of energy is ensured. This provides the basis for the recommendation that the fan operating point be determined using the fan total pressure and the system total pressure characteristics. This procedure can be applied to fans in the blower, booster, and exhaust positions equally well and to both single-fan and multiple-fan networks. Another advantage is that the method is applicable to fans with or without an evase.

IN 1923, when the writer began his studies in metallurgy, he came upon an article by Professor Honda on the, Equilibrium Diagram of the Iron-carbon System, 1 which made a profound impression on him. What interested him most was this sentence: "In the recent diagram of the iron-carbon system, the solidus is usually shown as a curve bending considerably downward. But it can be shown by thermodynamics that if the liquidus is straight or slightly curved, the same must also be true for the solidus. Hence, in my constitutional diagram, the lower portion of the solidus is slightly bent upward." Ever since then the writer has been interested in thermodynamics, especially chemical thermodynamics. The applications of thermo-dynamics to the metallic systems have been, in the writer's opinion, sadly neglected, although we continually use the phase rule in our study of equilibria in the liquid and solid states of metallic alloys. Many investigators, among whom may be mentioned Heycock and Neville, and s Honda and his coworkers, have applied the simple Raoult-van't Hoff law of depression of freezing point, mainly to determine the heat of fusion, but no attempt has been made to investigate the applicability of the thermo-dynamic laws of solution (as opposed to the laws of solution derived from other sources) to metallic systems" showing either limited or complete solid solutions. Perhaps the reason for this neglect is that until recently there have been so few reliable data on the solidus, which is much more difficult to determine than the liquidus. The writer has under way at the present time an investigation of a number of systems, the solidi of which have been more or less reliably determined. Recently, the writer has not only shown the valid applicability of the thermodynamic laws of solution as applied to the system antimony-bismuth but has also suggested a method of attacking problems involving complete and incomplete equilibria.2 In the present paper, the same method of approach is employed. (Canal Zone Meeting, November, 19]0.) THE sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his- many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the. last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar ; but very few, even of those who knew him well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ?Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of -the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. The discovery and delineation of significant mineralisation in the Eliwana region continues Fortescue Metals Group’s strong exploration success. In the decade after the first hole was drilled into Christmas Creek in mid-2004 a total of over 11 Bt of hematite-goethite mineralisation have been delineated supporting the raising of $13 B, construction of five mines, 620 km of rail and a five-berth port. As of June 2014, Fortescue was shipping at the rate of 155 Mt/a. The area including the Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits is one of a number of future growth opportunities that Fortescue is currently evaluating.The Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits occur on the south dipping limb of the Brockman Syncline/Jeerinah Anticline. The Eliwana group of deposits are hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation with the Flying Fish/Broadway group hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.Structurally the area is dominated by moderate southerly dips of the regional dome and keel style folding. The regional limb is locally cross-cut at a small angle by asymmetric north facing Ophthalmian folds trending 110°. These fold sets, in part, preferentially host subsequent supergene mineralisation. Faulting is only locally apparent.Early phases of exploration commenced in 2006, with mapping of Flying Fish and reconnaissance drilling in 2007. However, due to the concurrent discovery (Clarke et al, 2009) and subsequent fast tracked development of Solomon channel iron deposit and Firetail bedded iron deposit (Simpson et al, 2011) priority was placed on developing Solomon due to its relative proximity to existing Fortescue infrastructure. Staged follow-up drilling of both Marra Mamba and Brockman targets at Eliwana was progressively undertaken from 2008 onward.As of 20 May 2014 a total of 1494 reverse circulation (RC) holes for 54 248 m and 13 diamond holes had been completed, resulting in the delineation of a Mineral Resource of 740 Mt.
