Because segments of the Canadian mineral-based economy are dependent totally or in part on foreign sources of certain minerals, their well-being may well be affected by inability to obtain these minerals. Where such dependency exists, it is therefore important that contingency plans be available to counteract possible price increases or lack of supplies by means of technology, developed well in advance of any pending crisis . Canada is vulnerable to possible future real or artificial shortages of certain foreign-produced mineral commodities, and science and technology can provide information for the development of policies for counteracting efforts by foreign exporters to control prices or limit supplies.

Microwaves are being applied industrially in a number of fields and possess a number of potential advantages that could be applied in extractive metallurgy. Microwave heating has a number of unique characteristics, which distinguish it from the conventional heating methods. In microwave heating, the absorption of energy occurs at the molecular or atomic level and therefore the heat is generated within the material itself. In conventional heating, the exterior temperature is usually higher than the interior, but with microwave heating, the temperature gradient is inverted and thus the interior temperature can be much higher than that of the surface. The energy densities in microwave systems can be relatively high and this in combination with the low thermal conductivities of oxide ores, can lead to very high internal heating rates. In this research, the application of microwave energy for the reduction of a nickeliferous silicate laterite ore has been investigated. The real and imaginary permittivities are the two fundamental properties which determine the microwave absorption characteristics of a material and these were measured for the ore, both with and without carbon additions using the cavity perturbation technique. The microwave heating and reduction experiments were performed in a 0 to 2 kW CTC microwave system. The effects of power input, processing time, sample mass and charcoal additions on the microwave absorption were investigated. Then reduction experiments were performed and the nickel grade of the magnetic concentrate and the nickel recovery in the concentrate were determined.

Devido ao aumento da restrição do teor de enxofre nos aços torna-se necessário investigar a eficiência do processo de dessulfuração de ferro gusa. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho é empregar diferentes matérias-primas e fundentes como cal calcítica, sodalita, pré-cal, mistura padrão, fluorita, escória de KR, borra de alumínio e B2O3, a fim de encontrar a composição com maior eficiência de dessulfuração, relacionando-a ao fator de dessulfuração, obtido pela termodinâmica computacional. Os testes foram realizados a 1350°C, em uma atmosfera inerte com agitação constante. Os resultados mostraram que a mistura com maior eficiência foi aquela com 69% de cal, 5% de sodalita, 15% de pré-cal, 6% de escória KR e 5% de B2O3.

Tunnels in deep mines are subjected to high stresses. Fracture and failure of the rock mass around an opening can occur when mining-induced stresses are high. In burst-prone grounds, mining-induced seismicity can cause additional dynamic loading which can further increase the stress around the tunnels. When the dynamic stress reaches the rock mass strength, fracturing can occur and rockburst may happen (depending on loading stiffness around the failed rock mass). Rock support installed in the tunnel must be capable of dissipating dynamic energy and holding the failed rocks. Hence, it is important to estimate the depth of failure for rock support design. This paper focuses on how to model depth of failure under dynamic loading. In the modeling, two scenarios of rock failure are considered. In the first scenario, rock failure occurs under static loading and subsequent dynamic loading further increases the depth of failure. In the second scenario, no failure occurs under static loading but in the subsequent dynamic loading, failure around the tunnel is created.

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. "Conventional design criteria assume that the fracture strength of a structural material exceeds its yield strength. Fracture below the design load is not expected, y et many structures have failed in this way. The causes of the fractures are almost always discontinuities such as cracks and welding defects. Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM or simply 'fracture mechanics') provides an analytical framework for assessing the influence of sharp defects on the load-bearing capability of a structure. Fracture mechanics techniques have reached the point of acceptance by ASME Design Codes for nuclear components, and ASTM Standards now include well-defined rules for measuring fracture toughness. Starting with a simple equation which relates applied stress and crack size, the influence of the material's thickness and yield strength can be calculated. Thus, the size of defect which will cause failure under the applied stress may be determined. Armed with this information, the metallurgist can assess the safety of a structure from the viewpoints of non-destructive testing standards, construction standards and conditions of operation throughout its service life."

"Sediments in the vicinity of the hydrothermal seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) mounds are characterized by high concentration of metallic particles. They result from a long process of weathering of the primary mineral deposits and have been accumulated in depressions by mass wasting and hydrothermal plume fall-out. We present here the first results obtained on pore waters analyses of such sediments in distinct geological seafloor environments (in low-temperature hydrothermally active zones, on extinct hydrothermal mounds and in a remote depositional channel). Vertical concentration profiles suggest that the pore fluid composition is affected more by seawater circulation compared with hydrothermal fluid flow in all environments. The composition of pore fluids is affected by diagenesis and redox processes in the distal depositional channel where Mn2+ is released at depth with Cu2+.IntroductionMarine hydrothermal fields, hosting seafloor massive sulphides, are potential resources for future deep-sea mining and might become economic reserves for the industries. They are widespread at mid-oceanic ridges, arcs and back-arc spreading centers (Hannington et al., 2011; German et al., 2016). Sediments in the vicinity of these fields can contain unusually high concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu among other metal elements (Shearme et al., 1983). These hydrothermal, or metalliferous, sediments result from a combination of processes such as collapsing and weathering of chimney material, filling of the channels by turbidite-like mass wasting, in situ authigenic mineralization and hydrothermal plume fall-out (Goulding et al., 1998; German et al., 1990). The sediments contain important indicators reflecting the development of the hydrothermal systems. Because of their widespread distribution and metal content, they themselves can be considered potential mineral resources. Circulation of seawater through these deposits, however, often modifies the sediment composition by oxidizing the sulphides into oxyhydroxides and clays causing mobilization of the metals. To address the importance of alteration and diagenesis of these hydrothermal sediments, including the result of seawater circulation, we investigated the post-depositional processes occurring in the hydrothermal sediments at the TAG Hydrothermal Field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 26°N), focusing on the mobility of metallic cations in a number of different seafloor environments."

Ligas de titânio e nióbio têm sido desenvolvidas devido a possibilidade de modificar as propriedades mecânicas por envelhecimento. No presente estudo ligas TiNb com diferentes concentrações de Nb e com adição de estanho foram obtidas por fusão a vácuo, deformadas a frio e posteriormente tratadas por diferentes tempos de envelhecimento. Foi observado que todas as ligas em todas as condições apresentam as mesmas fases ß, a” e ?, no entanto, apresentam diferentes microestruturas. Isso se refletiu nas propriedades mecânicas das ligas, onde obtevese maiores durezas com o envelhecimento em 48 horas em todas as ligas, esse aumento de dureza foi quase o dobro para as ligas com maiores teores de nióbio (Ti42Nb e Ti42Nb2Sn).

A study was undertaken to quantify the differences in performance between a full-length encapsulated cable bolt and a partially encapsulated cable bolt. Much research has been reported on the differences in cable bolt design and operational parameters such as borehole diameter and grout type with much of this based on the Laboratory Short Encapsulation Pull Test (LSEPT). However, there is a gap in knowledge surrounding the effect of anchorage length on load transfer and cable bolt performance particularly with respect to the role of the bulb in modified cable bolt designs. The objective of this study was to expand the existing knowledge base of cable bolt performance with the intent of developing a revised design criterion. Alongside a comprehensive review of current cable support theory, design and practice, a series of pull tests was undertaken to compare each anchorage method using a high capacity modified cable bolt. The results serve to confirm earlier work on fully encapsulated anchorage. Both the peak load capacity and stiffness of the fully encapsulated cable bolt were nearly double that of the partially anchored cable bolt. When the tests were repeated in an oversized borehole, while there tended to be more variation in performance, there was little significant difference in the mean results. In addition to anchorage length, there are other factors that contribute to cable bolt performance including in order of sensitivity: embedment length, water-to-cement ratio of the grout, type of grout and borehole diameter. The anomaly ratio is obtained by dividing the analyzed value of an element by the anomaly threshold value of the element. The sum of anomaly ratios for all anomalous elements in a sample may be compared with similar sums for other samples, so that the samples having the greatest anomaly-ratio totals can be recognized easily. In partial or full-suites-of-ore-elements the use of anomaly ratios is more meaningful than analyzed values because the ratios quickly indicate anomalous elements and call attention to samples and localities that should be investigated.

"Aluminum is an important alloying addition to the zinc used in the hot-dip galvanization of sheet steel to control the properties and appearance of the resulting coating. Optimization of the galvanization process requires control of the alloy concentration which can be improved through the use of chemical sensors. Aluminum sensors based on molten electrolytes are commercially available but are not widely used because of their high cost. One approach to reducing the cost is to use a solid electrolyte which can simplify the sensor design and thus reduce the cost of fabrication. In this paper, the development of an aluminum sensor based on a solid fluoride electrolyte, specifically magnesium fluoride, will be described.IntroductionThe concentration of the zinc bath used in hot-dip galvanization affects the galvanization process as well as the properties of the resulting coating. The objectives of this generic study were to use numerical modeling techniques to determine under what conditions seismic waves generated by an earthquake might cause instability to an underground opening, or cause fracturing and joint movement that would lead to an increase in the permeability of the rock mass. In general, the study showed that moderate earthquakes (up to 0.41 g) did not cause instability of the tunnel or major fracturing of the rock mass. An artificial rock-burst tremor with high accelerations, however, was found to be amplified around the tunnel, and fracturing occurred as a result of the seismic loading in salt and granite. In shale, even moderate seismic loading resulted in tunnel collapse.

Bench top centrifuge is used to study the consolidation behavior of phosphatic clays. A mathematical model (based on first order kinetics) is developed to describe the relationship between the void ratio (at any time) and the effective stress. Permeability of the sediment as a function of the void ratio is also described. The obtained data are compared with that obtained by other consolidation testing methods. Centrifuge results indicate that consolidation data may be developed in a short period of time (hours) as compared to days or weeks when other techniques are used.

Tundish is the last reactor where significant metallurgical operations can still be done. Calcium aluminate slags are able to positively contribute to metallurgy considering oxide separation, protection against reoxidation and preclusion of resulphurisation. However, these are poor insulators. When using low melting point slags it is necessary to use another covering material. The deviation from saturation can be used as a measure of absorption capacity. By utilizing computerized construction of ternary and quaternary diagrams it is possible to compare different slags and to find proper slag compositions with reasonable capacity to dissolve inclusions. Objective of the present technical contribution is to evaluate tundish slag capacity to absorb inclusions, considering a particular tundish industrial slag and the changes in its chemical composition during continuous casting of steel. It was observed that slag composition changed during the continuous casting process; this variation is possibly related to interaction between the CaO-Al2O3 liquid slag and the rice hull ash layer which is used above it. Computational thermodynamics was used to determine activity of alumina dissolved in liquid slag; it was observed that the variation in slag composition did not change slag capacity to absorb inclusions, since precipitation of Al2O3 solid phases is not predicted.

Model testing is a two part operation; first, to assure the valid¬ity of the mathematical statements and second, to evaluate the accuracy of the computer model for predictive purposes. Verification of both the conceptual and computational aspects can be achieved through the use of input data for which output results are available for comparison. In this dissertation, two test problems were selected for model testing from the Economic Evaluation Reports of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Process Evaluation Group. Verification Data Set I Input data for this test was selected from an economic analysis of a hypothetical 1,056,000-ton-per-year mine in a 48-inch bituminous coal seam (Process Evaluation Group-Report No. 72-27, 1972). The mine was scheduled to operate five days per week, three shifts per day, 220 days per year with an estimated life of 20 years. Coal reserves covered an area of 6.4 square miles with an expected recovery rate of 70%. Production was achieved through 4 continuous miner sections with an average production rate of 400 tons per shift. The cost summary in the report included a breakdown of equipment and labor requirements. A depreciation schedule listed the expected capital expense per year of operation, assuming capital replacement with identical units and no change in the unit cost. Supply and oper¬ating costs were listed in both gross annual figures and cost per ton of production. Methods are described for filling underground cavities remotely with dry material pneumatically injected through a borehole to seal openings, prevent air movement, and reduce subsidence; this often brings underground fires under control by limiting the access of air. Large-scale tests were made in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine, Bruceton, Pa., in an operating mine, and in an abandoned Pennsylvania mine. Supplemental trials were made aboveground in galleries and in the laboratory. The parameters studied include horizontal and inclined passageways, obstructions in the entry, water leakage into the borehole, dry material, and grout and slurry mixes. The materials studied were fly ash, crushed and pulverized limestone, and sand. Best results were obtained with dry fly ash, though satisfactory seals were obtained with the other materials. When a borehole is dry and ends at an open void, casing is not necessary. If more than 5 gpm of water flows in the borehole, if the void contains loose debris, or if coarse material is injected, a material feedpipe should be inserted through the borehole. Fly ash was most suitable for remote filling because of its low angle of repose (8°) and its good flow characteristics. The depth of borehole through which the fly ash is injected has no appreciable effect on the filling operation.

"SGS Minerals commissioned an internal R&D program to develop in-house expertise to design, set up and operate REE separation pilot campaigns at its Lakefield, Canada site. A team approach was used that included expert consultants in the field of REE separation as well as in-house expertise supported by the on-site Analytical Laboratories.A mini pilot scale SX circuit was designed and constructed consisting of several modular banks of 30 stages each. About 80 stages of mixer-settlers were used to separate Pr and Nd from La and Ce contained in a synthetic REE chloride stream simulating the raffinate from an initial La-Nd|Sm-Lu+Y separation.Two pilot campaigns were operated totalling 25 days of 24/7 operation with 99.4% plant availability in the final 20 day campaign. Purities of > 99.9% in the Pr-Nd strip liquor and > 99% in the La- Ce raffinate were achieved and simultaneously sustained in the second campaign for prolonged operating periods. Key to controlling and adjusting the circuit was the rapid assay turnaround (as low as 2 hours) provided by the on-site SGS analytical lab. This permitted the operating team to modify conditions and observe the effect of changes relatively quickly considering the large number of stages. A portable XRF analyser was also used to track evolving assay trends in the circuit. The small physical size of the circuit enabled longer operation with a limited amount of sample.This paper discusses the design of the circuit, operating conditions, some of the key operating factors and controls and results obtained.INTRODUCTIONSGS Minerals commissioned the design of and built a solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant for the separation of rare earth elements (REE). The plant consists of a battery of 120 mixer-settlers set up in a dedicated piloting facility.The purpose of the programme was to develop capabilities and in-house expertise in REE SX separation technology. The program aimed to establish operating procedures, sampling regimes, and analytical methodologies and protocols for this type of process/plant. A team comprised of SGS personnel and several external consultants with prior industrial and REE separation piloting experience was assembled to achieve these objectives."

The sulfuric acid leaching of spent hydrodesulfurization catalysts yields an acidic solution rich in rare metals such as molybdenum, vanadium, cobalt, and nickel in addition to aluminum. For the purpose of separating and recovering the rare metals from the solution, basic solvent extraction characteristics of the metals involved with commercially available acidic organophosphorus reagents like TR-83, PC-88A, PIA-8 and CYANEX 272 as well as aliphatic alpha-hydroxyoxime LIX 63 from sulfuric acid media were investigated in the present work. It was demonstrated that CYANEX 272, PIA-8 and LIX 63 possessed excellent selectivity for molybdenum and vanadium over the other metals at comparatively low pH. Further, recovery of molybdenum and vanadium from the total leach liquor by the selected extractants was discussed. Additionally, in order to achieve preferential separation and recovery of cobalt and nickel over an appreciable amount of aluminum from the raffinate obtained after recovering molybdenum and vanadium, a systematic investigation was conducted on synergistic extraction behaviors of the mixed solvents of LIX 63 in combination with a series of acidic extractants such as CYANEX 272, PIA-8, PC-88A, D2EHPA, TR-83 and OPEHPA for cobalt, nickel and aluminum. It was elucidated that all of these mixtures could exhibit a good synergistic effect for extraction of cobalt and nickel, and that the lower the pKa of the acidic extractants, the greater the synergism. Contrarily, the extraction of aluminum, was considerably suppressed by LIX 63. Effective extraction of cobalt and nickel away from aluminum was accomplished from the sulfate solution at low pH (1.0 - 2.5) with the mixtures. In particular, the mixtures consisting of LIX 63 and CYANEX 272 or PIA-8 appeared to be the most feasible and economic from an industrial point of view, yielding acceptable separation efficiency for cobalt and nickel over aluminum and .a low acidity requirement for stripping cobalt and nickel as well as negligible degradation of LIX 63. Aluminum can be readily recovered as sulfate salt from the raffinate obtained after recovering molybdenum, vanadium, cobalt and nickel as outlined above by conventional crystallization method.
