Machine breakdowns and maintenance delays are large contributors to lost production and increased operating costs in the mining industry. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the applications of expert system technology to diagnostic and predictive maintenance tor mining equipment. This will help increase mining productivity and decrease operating costs, by reducing the frequency of equipment failures and repair times. The Bureau has begun this effort by applying expert system techniques to the diagnosis of hydraulic system problems on a continuous mining machine. This paper discusses the development of the hydraulic diagnostic expert system.

Lead ions originating from galena during processing of complex sulphide ores migrate to "cover" the surface of sphalerite and iron sulphide mineral particles, and cause poor selectivity in differential flotation. Generally in sulphide ore processing, the lead-activated minerals float in the Cu/Pb rougher circuit. Subsequently, surface lead complicates the zinc flotation circuit by lowering the concentrate grade due to the co-flotation of lead-activated iron sulphide minerals. The effect of lead in the differential flotation of sphalerite from Cu-Pb-Zn and Pb-Zn ores is discussed. Plant and laboratory test data are interpreted by determining the surface composition of individual grains of sphalerite and iron sulphide particles using two surface analytical techniques, Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometer (LIMS) and Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (TOF-SIMS). Cationic and anionic species on the surface were analyzed to elucidate the phenomena.

"In order to establish some links between the 22 specimens found on the site of Les Forges du St. Maurice, their slag inclusions have been analyzed by electron microprobe. Comparison between their contents of various specific oxides allowed us to segregate them into two major groups and even to isolate two sub-groups possibly characterized by some equilibrium between their oxides and/or the type of ores used.In all probability, limes/one coupled systematically with a soil rich in hydrated aluminum silicates was used as a flux.Based upon the existence of a pseudo equilibrium between the slag and the metal, the elaboration of the bulk of the specimens can be ascribed to the indirect rather than the direct method whereas the process temperature can be estimated at at least /400°C.RESUMEDans le but d'etablir des liens entre les 22 objects provenant des Forges du St-Maurice, leurs inclusions de scories ont été analysées par microsonde. Orebodies constitute naturally occurring, commonly highly variable concentrations of minerals in the earth’s crust formed through varying and highly unpredictable processes. Orebody knowledge is a core foundation of a mining company’s asset base underpinning all decisions about Mineral Resource and Ore Reserves, future production, development and ultimately the profitability and competitiveness of a mining enterprise. The decision to invest in a mineral project is usually based upon a techno-economic evaluation of the project and having clear approval pathways to gain local community support and address social and environmental impacts. The main objective of the techno-economic evaluation is to determine the optimum development sequence for the particular orebody in question and to estimate the economic viability of the project and the future return on investment to its stakeholders, balancing the inherent value of the mineral in the ground against the costs of development and market pricing. With the exception of market-driven commodity prices, virtually all revenue and cost estimates fundamentally stem from the understanding and subsequent modelling of the orebody. A reliable estimate of the ore deposit grade and other geological value-drivers is the foundation upon which the business case for future mine development and operation is intricately dependent. Orebody knowledge is, therefore, the fundamental driver of the mineral project cycle, influencing the progression of studies and consequently, the resource company’s ability to declare Exploration Results, Mineral Resources or Ore Reserves which govern the source and cost of funding available to the project. Drilling provides a ‘vector’ to the true nature of the orebody and effectively buys time to manage the technical risk associated with the orebody. Despite its perceived high cost, in both time and money terms, drilling is the only available technology for acquiring the necessary orebody knowledge to support technical and economic studies and to minimise orebody-driven cash flow uncertainty and volatility. However, like all costs, pressure to minimise drilling budgets is ubiquitous across the minerals industry. Paired with inappropriate key performance indicators, drilling is often regarded as a cost to be minimised, rather than an investment to be optimised. Furthermore, as future deposits get deeper and more complex, the collection of orebody knowledge is increasingly on the critical path for project development. The increasing cost of data collection pertaining to these deposits increases the temptation to minimise orebody knowledge gathering at the cost of long-term value as the reduction or postponement of drilling results in greater orebody knowledge risk at all stages of the value chain. Indeed the true cost of the decision to drill less is rarely known until the mine is in operation, well after the mine project evaluation team has moved on. This paper aims to promote orebody knowledge as the fundamental source of endogenous project financial risk and, consequently, its critical importance in project financial evaluation. Furthermore, the report documents experimental research into the development of an econometric model for valuing orebody knowledge. Using the density of drilling data as a proxy measure of orebody knowledge, the proposed approach integrates well-established stochastic grade modelling techniques with the mathematical mechanics of Decoupled Net Present Value (DNPV) which, combined with stochastic grade modelling (conditional simulation), lends itself to the financial International Mining Geology Conference 2022 | Brisbane, Australia and Online | 22–23 March 2022 3 assessment of orebody knowledge risk. The LaRonde ore is a Cu-Zn-Pb ore with gold (3-4 g/t) and silver (60-100 g/t). The precious metals are recovered with copper concentrate, zinc concentrate and cyanidation of zinc tails via Merrill Crowe precipitation. Subsequent to a recent mill expansion, excessive gold was reporting to zinc concentrate with a concurrent decrease in gold to copper concentrate. Owing to the higher return obtained from the metal, the mill endeavors to recover additional gold and silver to the copper concentrate and minimize the placement of precious metals to the zinc concentrate. A gold deportment study showed that the gold occurs mainly as küstelite, with a moderate amount of electrum and a minor amount of native gold. It also showed that various sulfur-based Au-and/or Ag-bearing coatings on liberated küstelite and electrum were the major mineralogical factors that caused gold and silver to report to zinc concentrate. By frequency, such coatings were observed on 70-80% of total liberated gold particles reporting to the zinc concentrate. Based on the gold deportment and the chemistry of the coatings, the collector chemistry was reviewed and a new collector was added into the circuit which resulted in a significant increase in gold and silver recovery to the copper concentrate. The information obtained from the mineralogy confirmed and guided other process optimization. In this paper, the authors will describe the process mineralogy of the LaRonde ores, and in particular, the mineralogical evidence diagnosing the problem. Reference will also be made to the rationale behind how the problem was solved, the results achieved, and future steps in optimization.

A fim de se evitar os danos causados pela corrosão, cresce cada vez mais o uso do aço galvanizado. Durante o processo de galvanização a quente ou por eletrodeposição é gerado um resíduo sólido perigoso conhecido por lama galvânica cujo descarte se trata de um processo oneroso. Sendo assim, as principais rotas de gerenciamento desse resíduo foram levantadas no presente trabalho, visando contribuir com a economia e aumento da sustentabilidade desse setor industrial. Ultimamente a lama galvânica é considerada uma matéria-prima potencial por conter metais com valor comercial presentes em concentrações elevadas, e isso tem estimulado pesquisas de rotas de recuperação desses teores metálicos. Paralelamente, a fim de resolver o problema de gestão do resíduo, estudos buscam rotas alternativas de descarte que visem estabilizar os elementos tóxicos e reutilizar a lama como matéria-prima em outro processo industrial.

ALTHOUGH bad grammar, the above query is probably, at the present moment, good sense. Why was the Institute started and why does it continue to exist? The small group of men who worked out the original idea felt keenly the necessity of mining engineers and metallurgists getting together in order to discuss their professional problems. That necessity still exists but it does not strike the present generation of engineers so keenly because they have always had the Institute: they do not know what it is to be without it. The Institute is a great graduate school of mining and metallurgy. All of its members who have something to say worth saying are the teachers; all the rest may be learners or critics. No university or technical school can match the experience and information which the authors of its papers possess, no institution of learning has a body of potential listeners so extensive and so vitally interested.

A exigência atual de novos materiais com alta resistência mecânica levou a um aumento da pesquisa abordando os aços de alta dureza e baixa liga. Estes aços possuem características que os qualificam para uma elevada gama de aplicações, dentre as quais destaca-se o uso em blindagem balística. O estudo das falhas decorrentes à altas taxas de deformação apontam como principal causa o surgimento das bandas de cisalhamento adiabático. Este trabalho visa caracterizar a microestrutura de um aço de alta dureza e baixa liga, após a realização de um ensaio balístico com um projétil 7.62x51 mm perfurante (Pf). A análise superficial do material foi realizada por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), onde pode-se observar a ocorrência de uma fratura após a formação da banda de cisalhamento adiabático (adiabatic shear band).

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of the flow of arsenic-containing materials in the United States, based on the best data available in 1991, includes a consideration of arsenic as a byproduct of the processing of nonferrous metals, the fate of arsenic in manufacturing wastes, the quantity of arsenic used in products, tile fate of arsenic in dissipative uses, and the useful life of discarded products. Where possible, estimates are given of the amounts of arsenic lost from the materials flow. Arsenic byproduct of mining nonferrous metals. Historically, most U.S. production has been from the states of Montana, Washington, and Utah. The smelters in these states are believed to be the areas of the country where arsenic is most concentrated in the soil, tailings ponds, and waste dumps. Since the closure of the last domestic producer of arsenic in 1985, all arsenic has been derived from imported sources. Historically, arsenic was important in agricultural applications as an insecticide, herbicide, and cotton desiccant. As the environmental movement gained momentum and the toxicity of arsenic became better understood, most of the agricultural uses for arsenic were banned. Beginning about 1975, the use of arsenic as a wood preservative began to grow. After 1980, wood preservative uses became more important than agricultural applications. By 1990, 70% of the arsenic consumed in the United States was used by the wood preservative industry and 20% by the agricultural industry. The major source of domestic arsenic emissions in 1989 was from the U.S. copper processing indus¬try. About 7,800 mt/yr of arsenic was discarded in leach dumps, tailings, and slag. Another 800 mt/yr was liberated to the atmosphere and 1/100 mt/yr was exported in copper concentrates. On the consumption side, 9,200 mt/yr was lost, mostly from dissipative agricultural uses and the disposal of obsolete arsenical products.

High-extraction mining of coal and other stratified minerals has a predictable effect on the surface and subsurface. Impacts on ground waters in overlying strata and on surface waters, that are associated with overlying sequential zones of collapse, fracturing, aquiclude, constrained strata, and surface disturbances can be anticipated. Since first quantified around 1979 in Bureau of Mines sponsored contract research work and others (and often adopted by state regulators), with zone extents based upon multiples of mined seam height of 24 to over 60 for the fractured zone, much new data have become available. In examining the sources of data and the methods and intents of the researchers of over 65 case histories, it became apparent that the strata behaviors were being confused with overlapping vertical extents reported for the fractured zones and aquiclude zones depending on whether the researcher was interested in water intrusion into the mine or in water loss from surface or ground waters. These more recent data, and critical examination of existing data, have led to the realization that the former "Aquiclude Zone" defined for its ability to prevent or minimize the intrusion of ground or surface waters into mines has another important character in increasing storage of surface and shallow ground waters in response to mining with no permanent loss of waters. This zone is here named the "Dilated Zone." The existence of the dilated zone explains the ratios of up to 60 times the mined thickness. Surface and ground waters can drain into this zone, but seldom into the mine, and can eventually be recovered through closing of dilations by mine subsidence progression away from the area, or filling of the additional void space created, or both. A revised model has been developed which accommodates the available data, by modifying the zones as follows: ? collapse and disaggregation extending 6 to 10 times the mined thickness above the panel ? continuous fracturing extending approximately 24 times the mined thickness above the panel, allowing temporary drainage of intersected surface and ground waters ? development of a zone of dilated, increased storativity, and leaky strata with little enhanced vertical permeability from 24 to 60 times the mined thickness above the panel above the continuous fracturing zone, and below the constrained or surface effects zones, whose thickness or existence is dictated by the zones above and below ? maintenance of a constrained but leaky zone above the dilated zone and below the surface effects zone, whose thickness or existence is dictated by the zones above and below ? limited surface fracturing in areas of extension extending up to 50 ft or so beneath the ground surface

O objetivo do trabalho é demonstrar a otimização de recursos com a implantação de grades de agendamento e gestão logística via SAP do processo de abastecimento da Vallourec Tubos do Brasil, com carvão vegetal produzindo em fazendas da Vallourec unidade Florestal, distribuídas em quatro regionais no estado de Minas Gerais. O novo formato da operação permitiu a redução da frota utilizada e o aumento da taxa de ocupação dos equipamentos. Atualmente movimenta-se aproximadamente 400.000 ton./ano de carvão vegetal. A frota é composta por equipamentos novos, rastreados, transportadores dedicados, os quais são considerados parceiros no desenvolvimento da operação. Avalia-se o desempenho de cada equipe envolvida em frequentes reuniões, nas quais são definidas ações de melhoria sempre que necessárias. Temos um atendimento maior que 98 % a grade programada para recebimento do carvão vegetal, considerando os tempos de carga e descarga.

Seismic tomographic imaging has been applied to determine the blast induced damage zones in bauxite pillars in underground mining. At the retreating stage, when pillar dimensions are reduced from 8 x 8 m to approximately 5 x 5 m, the' seismic tomographies reveal, through measurements of the P-wave velocities which is a measure of the degree of fracturation of the pillar rock mass, the presence of three zones within each pillar. In the external zone, where velocities recorded are below 750 m/s. extensive pillar damage occurs which is attributed to both the growth and coalescence of pre-existing cracks and even the creation of new cracks in the rock mass. This effect is in agreement with literature, when considering the peak particle velocity as a criterion for rock failure in tunnels. In the intermediate zone, where velocities range between 7S0-1000 m/s, damage to a much lesser extent occurs which is due mostly to growth of pre-existing cracks and widening of their apertures. The inner zone, where velocities exceed 1000 m/s, is considered to be unaffected by blasting. Simple remedial measures of low cost, which are based on blasting mechanics are proposed to minimise the blast induced damage zone and consequently the transition zone.

The purity of rectorite is only about 70% after preliminary mineral processing, which has limited its application. In this research, different pulp densities, different dispersants, different dispersing methods and purification flow sheets were used to purify rectorite. The results show that it is possible to obtain high pure rectorite clay with the purity above 90% and concentrate yield between 24.9% and 29.4% by the purification process with composite dispersants, stirred mill grinding dispersion and so on. The obtained high pure rectorite can be further used in rectorite nanocomposites.

Meramec Mining Company's Pea Ridge underground mine is presently involved in a large scale pillar recovery program and has made use of both rotary and down-the-hole drills for large diameter blastholes. Groups of pillars have been blasted with water gels in massive blasts which have broken in excess of one million tons of ore per blast. An outgrowth of the pillar recovery program is the combination of rotary and down-the-hole drills to develop vertical "raises" between mine levels. This paper outlines the Pea Ridge procedure for pillar blasting including the use of non-electric caps. Techniques and loading rates are discussed, and safeguards against blasting damage which were developed as a result of the program are presented.

The development of systems for location of miners who have become entrapped following a mine disaster has been one of the major research goals in the Bureau of Mines. This study details the preliminary development of such a system. Current technologies for locating trapped miners from the surface are either simple direction, finders or time difference pulse systems that have accuracy Limitations. Developing technologies using full vector field measurements at several receiving points are currently being studied. The necessity of measuring field strength with great accuracy can be a drawback in these systems. A system that operates with continuous wave radio signals, whose phase differences can be measured accurately even in weak signal conditions, greatly improves the location accuracy. A microcomputer would be used, in conjunction with the system, to gather and manipulate the data to automatically pinpoint the location of the trapped miner. Comparison of this system with existing technology indicates a favorable accuracy/complexity ratio for the phase difference of arrival technique.

Reducing accident rates keeps getting more and more complex as the usual tools enter a curve of diminishing results. Fortunately, nothing modifies behaviour in a stronger and wider way than having a robust safety culture. On the other hand, managing cultural change is difficult and the risk of back-fire is very high, especially if the workforce does not trust our intentions. A personalized approach of well chosen and targeted actions tends to be the only yet difficult option. We have found, via experience in the metallurgy and chemistry industries, a way of preparing the company and the workforce to accept these sorts of culture changing measures faster and easier. Using company-wide changes based on workplace perception, yields the most optimal acceptance. It is based in the principle that we all use clues in our environment as guides to choose our behaviour. So, controlling the perception that our workplace generates can affect behaviour and simplify our task before it even starts. It is a matter of using the tools that other disciplines such as marketing, social engineering and architecture bring to us and adapting them to a very defined objective: Having our installations “sell” safety so that our people unconsciously believe that they must adapt to safety values in order to “do well” in said environment. INTRODUCTION After decades of improvements in accident rates, we are understandably hitting a diminishing results curve: most actions that spectacularly reduced accidents in the past (e.g., Innovation in Personal Protection equipment, adapting international standards and legislation, and innovative safety programs; Figure 1) now hardly get us the exponential gains we saw years back, regardless of the investment we put on them. Furthermore, the improvements in safety of the last 3 decades have been creating new sets of issues that start to show their face such as: By reducing accidents we can create feelings of invulnerability as we lose view of the consequences. With innovative protection equipment we increase Risk Homeostasis, meaning that people behave in a more dangerous way in order to maintain a constant level of risk in their lives (Getting closer to fire after getting better fire-proof garments for example). Too much Legislation can create a feeling of disengagement from personal responsibility. And despite improvements, we haven’t really solved the production vs safety confrontation, it is now stigmatized and less visible, yet it tends to reappear in moments of weakness.

"Coal mining, whether surface or underground, has hazards that make it unique in the field of industrial safety and health. The often soft, faulted and folded sedimentary strata make wall or roof movement a risk to the safe and economic removal of the coal, while the extraction and handling of coal may create an explosion hazard even in surface operations, In Canada, these problems are compounded by the situation of the coal fields which range from deep undersea deposits in Nova Scotia to steeply pitching thick coal seams high in the Rocky Mountains. Climate too can create its own problems, particularly the effect of metals of minus 40°C temperatures, as crumpled dragline booms at prairie strip mines witness. Because of the difficult and sometimes hazardous conditions, Canada's underground colliery managers, in common with those of other Commonwealth coal-producing countries, must have a government ""certificate of competency"" before being appointed as mine managers. Certification of assistant managers (""under-managers"") and foremen (""fire-bosses"") is also a legal requirement for all of Canada's underground collieries, while the province of Alberta requires certification of surface management personnel. Electricians and mechanics who install and maintain the specially designed equipment underground and in hazardous areas of surface mines and processing plants, and mine surveyors who ensure accuracy of the location of underground workings, must also hold government certificates of competency. The requisites for all certification include a minimum work experience and knowledge of coal mining technology and mine safety and health legislation. Despite recognition of the hazards and increasing knowledge of methods of preventing explosions of flammable gas and coal dust in Canada's underground mines, there have been several disastrous explosions such as those at Springhill Colliery in Nova Scotia in 1891 with the loss of 125 lives, at Hillcrest Colliery in Alberta in 1914 with 189 dead, and more recently · explosions and fires in No. 20 and No. 26 Collieries in Cape Breton. Preventing explosions has required developing optimal ventilation techniques, reducing ignition potential, suppressing ignition at source, draining flammable gas before it can enter the air courses, and preventing, or sealing off, autogenous heatings with their associated carbon monoxide or explosion dangers."
