A major challenge in managing coal seam gas (CSG) water is predicting how much water will be produced as the industry develops. Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (KCB) was commissioned by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) to develop a tool to forecast where, when and how much CSG water will be produced in the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins under various industry expansion scenarios.The water production tool (WPT) uses the Theis equation, a non-equilibrium groundwater flow equation that accounts for the effect of pumping time on well yield in confined aquifers, to predict water production volumes. Where multiple pumping wells are in close proximity, the required pumping rates for coal seam depressurisation are reduced. Therefore, pumping effects are projected spatially to assess interference effects between wells. Water production is then upscaled to the projected scale of the CSG industry within the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins.Two modifications were made to address the dual phase nature of CSG extraction (a transmissivity reduction factor) and the impact of weathering at the eastern margin of the Surat Basin (a ænear edge effectÆ factor). These factors modify relevant hydrogeological parameters in a consistent and defensible manner to more closely match observed water production.The WPT was verified by comparing results to equivalent Theis equation calculations and to type curves provided by CSG proponents. Calibration was achieved by varying the spatial distribution and intensity of the near edge effect factor in conjunction with a chi-squared analysis of residuals.The tool, which is now being maintained and further developed by the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), was built to balance numerical complexity against relative flexibility and simulation speed. The result is a tool that can produce statistically relevant results of prescribed scenarios to plan water handling and treatment requirements in discrete zones of operation.CITATION:Strand, R, Reading, L and Keir, G, 2013. Uranium ores often contain significant concentrations of molybdenum[1] and typically yellow cake will have a moly specification which when exceeded brings penalties, and 4. The valuable metal rhenium is a byproduct of molybdenum recovery circuits.

The Golden Cross Mine is located within the Waitekauri Valley near the southern end of the Coromandel Ranges, eight kilometres north-west of Waihi, North Island, New Zealand. The mine is owned and operated in a joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Ltd (20 per cent). The underground mine produces gold and silver from low sulphidation epithermal quartz veins which developed in the shallow parts of a meteoric water dominated system during the Upper Miocene (7.36 - 6.67 Ma). The Empire Vein System is hosted within a dilational structural environment which developed at the lithological contact between acid intrusives, rhyolitic-dacitic tuffs and reworked pyroclastics, and undifferentiated andesites. The formation of the Empire Vein System was controlled by the rheological properties of the host rocks and variable displacement along a series of normal, right lateral, easterly-dipping faults. These faults represent sub-parallel zones of master shearing within a Riedel shear model. Underground mining extracts ore from the steeply dipping hangingwall and the complex footwall veins of the Empire Vein System. Initially sills are driven along the hangingwall vein on ten to fifteen metre sublevel intervals. In the footwall zones where significant mineralisation adjacent to the hangingwall sill drives has been identified, a series of cross-cuts and footwall drives (sub-parallel to the hangingwall sill) are also developed. Where continuity of mineralisation and ground conditions permit a combination of post pillar flatbacking and AVOCA longhole benching methods are used. Detailed underground mapping of lithology, quartz veining and major structures provides the information for designing ground support and footwall pillars, planning mine development and ore extraction sequencing. Sectional interpretation displays the vertical extent of faults, fractures and the vein system. The mining methods used underground at the mine have evolved through a thorough understanding of the structural complexity and the systematic geological mapping of the Empire Vein System.

Drilling in West Texas during 1942 was substantially less than in the previous year. In all. 1267 Wells were drilled, as compared with 2325 wells in 1941. Of these 1267 wells, 1052 oil wells, 10 gas wells and 69 dry holes were drilled in proven fields and 36 oil wells, one gas well and 99 dry holes were wildcat operations. Of the 36 wildcat wells completed as oil producers, 16 led to new field discoveries, three found new productive horizons in old fields, and 17 extended the productive limits of established fields. Where semiwildcat drilling took place along established productive trends, there was often no sharp demarcation between wildcat wells that extend field limits and normal development to fulfil lease obligations, other than the arbitrary classification of a well as a wildcat if it was drilled at a distance of 2 miles from a producing oil well. The dry hole drilled on the edge of a field may have proved a more hazardous operation than a semiwildcat drilled several miles from production but favorably located on structure. The percentage of successful wildcatting ranges from 26.5 down to 14 per cent, dependent upon the degree of inclusion of the semiwildcat operations. Irrespective of which figure was used, the West Texas area maintained its better than average exploratory position. No doubt a number of factors may have influenced the extent of the 1942 development. Among those arising from the economic dislocation attendant on the war effort, the following are worthy of note. Owing to inductions into the armed forces and shipyard competition for mechanically trained men, experienced drilling personnel was sharply reduced, thereby increasing drilling costs and well-completion hazards. Replacement labor has not met the same standard of responsibility or workmanship to which the oil industry has grown accustomed. Increased military consumption of aviation gasoline and other crude products, coupled with decreased domestic consumption of lower-octane gasoline, has stimulated the market demand for the types of sweet crude most readily processed with available refinery equipment to meet war requirements, and has depressed the market demand for the sour West Texas crudes. As a majority of the purchasers of West Texas crude normally ship a substantial portion of sour crude to the refineries on the Atlantic seaboard, the loss and diversion of tanker service between Gulf Coast and north Atlantic ports have further curtailed the market demand for this type of crude oil. As some purchasers of crude oil were able to move by pipe line their West Texas trunk-line capacity to Midwestern refining centers, they were not impelled to curtail purchases of West Texas crude. The varying ability of the purchasers of crude oil to market West Texas crude was reflected back to various fields to which they were connected, causing an unequal distribution of production as among fields and operators. A booster fan is an underground fan installed in series with a main surface fan and used to boost the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. To accomplish this objective, the fan is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system, and interlocking devices between main and booster fan controls. The stopping and doors are used to prevent flow recirculation, and the monitors to ensure safe operation of the fan. A booster fan, properly sized and sited, can be used to create safe work conditions and allow the extraction of minerals from areas that would otherwise be uneconomic to mine. In deep and large mines with heavy emissions of air contaminants, the required quantities of air can only be supplied by using high pressure fans. These fans will inevitably induce significant losses of fresh airflow through the stoppings and doors. For well defined ventilation circuits, booster fans can be used to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows. However, this will require a good understanding of the correct ventilation practice, from planning to operation and maintenance of booster fans. The objective of this study is to investigate the conditions under which booster fans can be used safely and efficiently in underground coal mines. Specifically, the study is directed at (1) collecting reliable information on airway resistances and flow requirements from two large U.S coal mines, (2) collecting fan performance data from one or more existing coal mine where booster fans are used regularly, (3) monitoring the performance of booster fans in a laboratory model and an experimental mine, (4) developing a booster fan selection method to assist the ventilation engineer at the planning stage, and (5) training six M.S. or Ph.D. graduate students in advanced mine ventilation.

Relatively few metal-metal systems exist that would permit the creation of fiber-metal composites consisting of mutually insoluble constituents. It is anticipated that most high strength-to-weight ratio and high -temperature fiber composites ultimately to be produced will utilize high-strength fibers embedded in a highly alloyed matrix. An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of alloying on the tensile Properties and micro-structure of tungsten-fibey-reinforced composites. Composites were made of tungsten fibers infiltrated with copper binary alloys that contain elements of varying solubility in tungsten. Room-temperature tensile tests were made on the composites, and a metallographic study of the microstructure of the fiber-metal-matrix interfaces was conducted. It was shown that, as the depth of penetration of some alloying elements into the fiber increased, a decrease in both tensile strength and ductility of the composite results. A notch effect, due to the formation of a brittle alloy zone with the tungsten fiber, was observed and gave rise to greater reductions in tensile properties and ductility behavior than would be Predicted by a law-of-mixture relation alone. In recent years, investigators have considered combining fibrous materials with relatively weak binder materials. The interest in fiber-reinforced composites results from the fact that fibers or wires may be exceedingly strong and exhibit mechanical properties superior to those of the bulk materials from which they are derived. For example, tungsten wires drawn to less than 1 mil in diameter may have strengths of over 600,000 psi,' while steel wires ranging from 10 to 3 mils in diameter may have strengths of the order of 300,000 to over 600,000 psi.2 Both metallic and ceramic whiskers are known to have very high strengths. For example, iron whiskers have been shown to have strengths of 1.9 million psi3 and sapphire whiskers have been reported to have strengths of the order of 1.7 million psi.4 If all or part of the strengths of such fibers could be retained, subsequent to the incorporation of the fibers in an engineering material, a superior material could result. In previous work done at the Lewis Research Center, McDanels, Jech, and weeton5 demonstrated the feasibility of fabricating metal-fiber—metal-matrix composites that utilized the full strengths of the fiber and matrix materials. Tungsten fibers were combined with a copper matrix by a liquid-infiltration method such that the tungsten fibers were uniaxially oriented parallel to the tensile axis of the composite. A linear relation was established that related the tensile strength of the composite with the volume percent of the fibers. Mutually insoluble constituents were selected for the study so that the strength of the composite could be quantitatively related to the strength of the individual constituents. The fact that there are only a few metals that are mutually insoluble with tungsten, e.g., copper, silver, gold, and zinc, and that these either have low melting points, high vapor pressures, or poor oxidation resistance, makes it necessary to utilize other metals that are soluble in tungsten, where high-temperature applications are ultimately contemplated. It was anticipated that, for most practical fiber-reinforced composite materials, it would be necessary to use a fiber and metallic matrix that would have varying degrees of solubility for each other. A logical extension of the earlier work was thus felt to be a study that would determine the effects of elements that had mutual solubility with the tungsten. Numerous investigators have found that tungsten fibers may be damaged by thermal treatments or contamination of the surface of the fiber by alloying elements.6-10 On the other hand, surface treatments may improve the strength of such fibers."-" Relatively little work with composites containing tungsten fibers have been reported. The solubility of rare earth (RE) salts in aqueous solutions depends on many factors including the type of cations and anions in solution, their concentrations, temperature and the type of solid precipitated. Experiments were conducted using anhydrous La2(SO4)3 and Ce2(SO4)3⋅8H2O as solids and lanthanum(III) perchlorate prepared by dissolving La2O3 in HClO4 solutions as RE-sources. Solutions of H2SO4, H3PO4 and their mixtures in the presence or absence of Na+, Ca2+, Fe(III) or Al(III) as perchlorates served as test solutions. Saturated solutions and precipitated solids were assayed and characterized using standard techniques to show that the La(III) and Ce(III) ions precipitate as hydrated sulphates, phosphates or double salts with sodium, depending upon the solution composition. The change in solubility of RE-salts with solution composition and temperature is the result of the composite effect of changes in solubility products (pKSP) of salts, pKa of acids and other equilibrium constants for ion-association.

"The important volume end use sectors for the rare earth elements and yttrium continue to be in steelmaking, petroleum cracking catalysts and glass polishing. The market sectors which may provide future high volume demand, to replace the older sectors where demand has declined over the past decade, include magnets, automobile catalysts, ceramics and superconductors. Increases in production capacity in all major rare earth producing countries are expected to restrain large price increases for high purity rare earth oxides over the short term. A sharp increase in demand for yttrium in advanced ceramics and superconductors would lead to a shortage in separation capacity, however, and to a corresponding rise in prices for separated rare earths.IntroductionWhile visiting the Geology Department of the University of Toronto in 1981, Professor Lu from the Institute of Geochemistry of Academia Sinica at Gweiyang in China introduced one of his seminars with the observation that in China, rare earths are not rare at all.Indeed, while being rare in terms of abundance as measured by, say, the Clarke scale, the rare earth elements, like many other low abundance elements, are subject to geological, geochemical and mineralogical concentration.The rare earth elements comprise the fifteen inner transition elements of Group IIIB, Period 6, of the periodic table, from lanthanum to lutetium (the lanthanides), as set out in Table 1. The rare earths constitute a distinct group as they have extremely similar chemical characteristics due to the uniformity of their outer electron shells. The element yttrium is usually, by convention, included in the rare earth group as it occurs with the rare earths in nature and has properties very similar to them.The rare earths are divided into two subgroups, the ""light"" rare earths, made up of the first seven elements of the series, lanthanum to europium, and the ""heavy"" rare earths, comprising the remaining eight elements, gadolinium to lutetium, plus yttrium. These two subgroups are also referred to as the cerium subgroup and the yttrium subgroup, respectively. The subdivision is based on differences in the atomic radii resulting in somewhat different properties for the two subgroups."

An innovative biological treatment system designed to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and immobilize metals from cyanide leach operations is described. A pilot-plant demonstration was conducted to detoxify cyanide and immobilize several metals from a process stream at the McCoy/Cove Mine. Testing was performed under the EPA's Mine Waste Technology and Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation Demonstration Programs. This technology was successful in detoxifying cyanide and effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed. Results show that biological treatment can offer an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

In the course of the development of the Red Coulee field, northwest of Coutts, Alberta, a considerable amount of information has been gathered by the Department of the Interior regarding the chemical character of waters encountered in the drilling of wells in this area. The writer, in this paper, has undertaken to assemble the available material with the idea of deducing what relations, if any, may exist between the different waters from the same well, and also how these compare with waters encountered in similar horizons in other wells. From no other district, with which the Department of the Interior has had to do, have there been received so many samples of water, and yet not all the waters logged in the drilling reports were sent in for analysis. The information, therefore, herein contained is not as complete as the writer would have desired, but sufficient evidence has been accumulated to indicate some very definite tendencies in the chemical nature of the waters of this field. The drilling of Red Coulee wells has been carried out exclusively by percussive tools. These permit 'dry' drilling, and, consequently, water-sands are recognized when encountered. Had rotary tools been used, information regarding water-sands would have been very meagre, if not entirely lacking, since, in the mudding-off process, water-sands would have been overlooked, with the result that, should water break through into a completed well, its source would not be known and remedial efforts would be greatly handicapped, if not entirely defeated.

The extractive metallurgy of nickel and cobalt has proved to be a particularly fruitful area for innovation in hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy ever since the development of the Hybinette process for nickel in the early 1900's. In current practice, nickel concentrates are generally smelted to high grade mattes which are then refined to metal by a combination of hydrometallurgy and electrometallurgy, although low grade copper-nickel concentrates are refined directly by the ammonia pressure leach process. Matte refining processes in commercial operation include the direct electrolysis of matte, the ammonia pressure leach, sulphuric acid leaching using air or oxygen at elevated pressure, or at ambient pressure, and chlorine or chloride leaching. Refined nickel is recovered either as electrolytic cathode, or as metal powder by hydrogen, reduction. Hydrometallurgy has also found application in the treatment of nickel laterite ores, both in the reduction roast ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach process, pioneered by Caron and in the Moa Bay acid leach process. Cobalt is recovered as a co-product of copper in central Africa, and as a byproduct of hydrometallurgical nickel refining elsewhere. In the African plants, the copper-cobalt concentrates are roasted and leached in sulphuric acid solution, and copper and cobalt are recovered separately from the leach solution by direct electrowinning. A variety of hydrometallurgical techniques are used for the separation of cobalt from nickel, including selective precipitation and crystallization, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. Like nickel, refined cobalt is recovered either as electrolytic cathode or as metal powder by hydrogen reduction.

Exploration for uranium in Australia has so far discovered reserves equal to 17.5% of the Western World's. The Australian uranium industry, when fully developed, will be one of the largest producers and possibly the largest exporter in the world. The world's nuclear industry is young, rapidly developing in size and technology and is subject to more social, political and regulatory controls than any other industry. This paper considers the probable development of Australia's uranium industry against a background of normal commercial parameters together with other factors which are peculiar to the nuclear industry. As the theme of this conference is "Australia's role in the World Mineral Indus- try" this paper concentrates on the commercial and practical aspects associated with the development of Australia's uranium resources in a world context.

Durante o comissionamento o laminador Novelis CM3 apresentou níveis elevados de vibração, que causou instabilidades no processo de laminação, gerando problema de qualidade e desperdício de produto. Devido à vibração, as chapas produzidas pelo CM3 apresentaram marcas de Chatter, e para entender esse fenômeno foram empregadas as seguintes técnicas: Análise de Vibração, Análise da Forma de Deflexão Operacional e simulação numérica pelo Método dos Elementos Finitos-MEF. De acordo com a literatura, um laminador pode apresentar três modos de Chatter: 5-20 Hz (torção); 128- 256 Hz (3a oitava) e 500-700 Hz (5a oitava). O modo de 3a oitava é mais crítico para a estrutura. Na Análise de Vibração, os espectros apresentam níveis elevados na frequência de 153 Hz, sendo que na análise por ODS identificou-se movimentos relativos nos rolos de Backup e na estrutura de apoio em 153 Hz. Os cálculos por MEF destacaram a existência de um modo natural em 153 Hz nos rolos Backup, como observado nos modos operacionais obtidos por ODS, caracterizando ressonância no sistema. Esta ressonância está associada à vibração do modo de 3a oitava, que ocasiona níveis elevados de vibração no sistema. A excitação deste modo natural faz com que haja a flexão dos cilindros, que causa variações na pressão de laminação gerando assim marcas nas chapas. Também, realizou-se uma Análise Modal do rolo Backup identificando-se uma frequência natural na região de 150 Hz, com a forma modal de flexão.

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

Martin County Coal Corporation operates three underground mines and two surface mines on Wolf Creek in Martin County near Inez, Ky. The original underground development was begun in March of 1970. The property being developed is leased from Pocahontas Land Corporation. The A. T. Massey Coal Company, whose offices are located in Richmond, Virginia, is the parent company and sales agent for Martin County Coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all the production from the mines which ultimately are scheduled to produce 2,500,000 tons annually. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this huge reserve of low-sulfur steam coal. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton seams are being deep-mined now and it is in three mines that the diesel haulage equipment is used. Those of you who attended the AIME meeting in Birmingham last October or the Diesel Symposium in Pittsburgh in January of this year are familiar with the introduction of trackless diesel-powered haulage equipment into our Martin County mines. I made a presentation at each of those meetings which dealt with our first experience with Wagner Mining Equipment haulage units. These machines are sold exclusively by Lake Shore, Inc. whose offices are in Iron Mountain, Michigan.

Organizations involved in Facility Management (FM) have the opportunity to use BIM as a knowledge repository to document evolving facility information and to support decisions made by the facility managers during the operational life of a facility. This paper demonstrates the potential of using BIM to develop algorithms that automate decision making for FM applications. The potential of utilizing BIM as an analysis tool is demonstrated through the scenario of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system failure in an operating facility. In case of a typical HVAC malfunction today, facility occupants record complaints in a ticketing database maintained by the FM organization. Upon receiving notification of HVAC system failure, facility inspectors visit the location to confirm the reported failure. Upon confirmation, facility managers review building plans and specifications to develop a detailed plan of action to repair any HVAC components suspected of damage. Based on the plan of action, inspectors visit the facility to inspect and, in case of damage, repair the appropriate HVAC system components. These FM practices ? as currently implemented across the industry ? are labor intensive, time consuming, and often rely on unreliable and outdated information. To address these shortcomings, the authors propose an alternative methodology of HVAC fault detection in operational buildings. The authors implement an algorithm that leverages complaint ticket data and automates BIM to determine potentially damaged HVAC system components. Based on the list of HVAC components suspected of damage, the algorithm develops a plan of action for the facility inspectors. Finally, the authors discuss the advantages of the proposed method as well as the challenges of implementing automated BIM-enabled decision making processes in the FM industry.

In 1982, the result of a 3-year study was published as "A Guide to the Understanding of Ore Reserve Estimation". The principal conclusions were that computation formed only part, and perhaps not the most important part, of an estimate and that the estimate should recognize that geological, mining engineering and metallurgical judgements formed an essential part of the eventual result. Subsequent expectation/realization studies of several mines have produced case histories which form the principal basis of the paper. These imply that geology is even a larger factor than thought earlier.
