A novel open stope design approach is presented that delivered improved performance in a mining area with poor ground conditions at the Olympic Dam mine. During 2019, a large open stope had an unplanned caving event resulting in the inability to extract the planned tonnes and subsequent sterilisation of nearby stopes. A design limitation was the lack of data and understanding around the alteration domain extents, the rock mass strength controls and limits, the failure modes controlling stope stability in the local area, and the use of conventional stope shapes. From the available data and failure observations, it was inferred that the dominant caving failure mode resulted from a blocky rock mass impacted by structure and alteration causing an unravelling failure mechanism. Numerical and empirical analyses were conducted to test this hypothesis and establish strength limits for design. The strength limits for the design were then used to provide a range of outcomes from which future stope design shapes such as chamfered backs could be selected. Three alternate chamfered geometries were selected to trial the innovative designs. Industry on a whole has not been very receptive to government prodding to implement waste minimization programs. Waste minimization has the appearance of substantial benefits, however, there are underlying difficulties and suspicions that need to be addressed before industry will support pollution prevention initiatives. They can be summarized as follows: - Human behavior resists change, uncertainty, and unknowns. - New waste minimization techniques are difficult to find and research. - Calculating the true cost of present waste practices as well as new techniques being considered is difficult and time consuming. - Getting a consensus opinion of all the individuals affected on the course or technique to be employed in a pollution prevention program. New software products have addressed many of the problems associated with implementing pollution prevention programs: They contain research on a large number of pollution prevention techniques and case studies; they generally are accessed by EPA ID number, chemical name, or synonym; and some programs have the option to print a comprehensive written user-specific pollution prevention program.

Statistics on the volume of natural gas produced in the United States were first collected for 1906. A summary of those statistics covering 1906-35 was incorporated in the 1937 Minerals Yearbook. This summary, covering 1936-50 presents, by States, a number of the more important statistics that have appeared in the natural-gas chapter of the Minerals Yearbooks. The period covered has been one of rapid expansion, especially of long-distance transmission lines. Natural gas was made available to some States for the first time; in other States the degree of dependence upon supplies transported from outside their boundaries changed rapidly. Thus, an isolated series of statistics cannot be studied without considering other regional influences that reflect in the overall operations of the industry. These tables accordingly have been designed to show for each State the simultaneous changes taking place in the various sectors surveyed. The tables show production data in the upper portion and consumption data in the lower portion. They are arranged alphabetically, by States. A copy of the 1906-35 production summary from the 1937 Minerals Yearbook has been included.

There is a growing need to process galvanized steel scrap from automobiles, etc., in order to remove the zinc coating that otherwise causes problems in remelting of the scrap in electric arc furnaces. One approach that has moved to the pilot plant stage is that of Metal Recovery Technologies, Inc., of East Chicago (MRI). That company leaches the zinc fiom the scrap with a sodium hydroxide solution. The leached and washed scrap can then be returned to the steel industry. What is left is a sodium hydroxidelzincate solution which must be processed to recover the zinc and the NaOH. Presently, this is done by MRI using electrodeposition on planar electrodes at moderate current density and the resulting zinc is in the form of fine powder which is hard to process into, say, zinc for galvanizing. MRI has supported an investigation of a novel electrode, the spouted bed electrode (SBE), for zinc electrodeposition. In laboratory cells, zinc particles with low porosity have been grown up to 3mm in size. Microanalysis of the deposited zinc showed low level of impurities. DC energy consumption values were usually in the range of 2-2.5 kWg which is well below the energy consumption of the existing cells (and of present-day cells for electrowinning from acid sulfate electrolytes). These results were achieved at current densities (few thousand A/m2) that are much higher than possible with conventional electrodes. Discussion is provided of the scale-up of the cell to a commercial scale.

"The purpose of the study is to study the feasibility of using sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (DDP) to enhance the recovery of platinum group elements from low-grade refractory copper-nickel ores characterized by a portion of nickel and platinum group elements (PGEs) locked in the dominant sulfide mineral — pyrrhotite. These ore characteristics dictate the need to produce a bulk PGE-containing sulfide concentrate due to the difficulties of producing selective concentrates without a significant loss of the metals.New data on the adsorption and flotation performance of DDP-containing collectors were obtained by measuring the electrode potential, hydrophobicity of the sulfide mineral surfaces and by means of extraction spectrophotometry and flotation studies. The interaction between DDP, pyrrhotite, and pentlandite leads to the formation of surface hydrophobic layers consisting mainly of disulfide and a small amount of metal compounds. These adsorption layers are formed by the reaction with butyl xanthate. In the case of cooperite, DDP reacts with the surface, forming not only disulfide, as in the case of butyl xanthate, but also a complex platinum compound. DDP-containing agents demonstrate stronger collecting properties with respect to sulfide minerals of copper-nickel ores compared to butyl xanthate, which is explained by a stronger hydrophobizing effect and foaming properties.The addition of a combination of DDP-containing agents and butyl xanthate at a ratio of 3:1 for the recovery of sulfides and PGEs in the bulk flotation of copper-nickel ore made it possible to improve the recovery of Ni, Pt, and Pd by 13.6, 9.2, and 9.4%, respectively, relative to the recovery achieved in flotation with butyl xanthate.Bulk flotation with the addition of a composition of DDP-containing agents and butyl xanthate allows the most complete recovery of all valuable elements and is the only technologically feasible method for processing of lowgrade ores, when it is impossible to produce without loss high-grade selective concentrates suitable for smelting."

"Laboratory flotation tests of slow cooled converter slag have showed that 92.5% copper recovery at the copper cut-off grade of 24 - 25 % can be achieved by using a 50:50 ratio of DSP330 and SIBX (sodium isobutyl xanthate) at the natural pH of 7 and with a grinding time of 18.5 minutes. 70ìéç is the P80 achieved at this grinding time. MIBC is the frother and the solid content of the flotation feed was 46%. In the plant trials, two types of collectors at two different feed particle sizes for both the normal and slow cooled slag were operated. The particle size was controlled by the feed rate. The P80 of 75 ìçé at a feed rate between 32 - 36 t/h were tested. The plant trials have demonstrated that the copper recovery in the milling and flotation process of the slow cooled slags was improved by 3%. IntroductionIt is proposed to float the slow cooled converter slag, in the auxiliary circuit of the copper concentrator at Mount Isa, by using the processing conditions identified from several laboratory flotation tests. Among these laboratory tests, one produced a copper recovery of 4 % higher than those achieved from a normal cooled slag with the same slag feed grade and the same copper content (24 - 26 %) in the concentrate. These test conditions were selected for further studies.Laboratory Test Work and Plant TrialsThere has been a lot of work conducted under laboratory and plant conditions [1]. However, the achieved results did not justify their total implementation in the Mount Isa Copper Concentrator. Initially, the lab trials were carried out with slag cooled 100% in air; then it was changed to combined cooling for 12 h with air and 2.5 days with water sprays. The reason for this change was the shortage of space when the slag was cooled 100% in air, as it takes several days to achieve safe temperatures for its removal. The San Manuel Copper Smelter has reported that their slag was left for air cooling in pits for 8 h and then was followed by water cooling for 2-3 days [2]"

Na produção de aços via forno elétrico a arco (FEA) é gerado um resíduo sólido perigoso Classe I, denominado pó de aciaria elétrica (PAE), que é composto principalmente por óxidos metálicos com composição associada aos tipos de sucata utilizados e à composição do aço fabricado. O presente trabalho tem como objetivos centrais: (i) caracterizar amostras deste resíduo oriundas de uma usina siderúrgica localizada no Estado do Ceará, e (ii) avaliar a viabilidade de processos de reciclagem do PAE. A metodologia consiste na caracterização química e estrutural do PAE por meio de análise por fluorescência de raios-X e difração de raios-X. Constatou-se a presença dos seguintes elementos: Zn, Fe, Cl, Pb, Ca, K, Mn, Si, Al, S, Cu, Ti e Cr, com especial destaque para o Zn (com teores superiores a 40%). As principais fases encontradas no PAE são: franklinita (ZnFe2O4), zincita (ZnO), e magnetita (Fe3O4). Em posse dos resultados, fixa-se no estudo de possibilidades de processos de reciclagem do PAE.

As reservas de minério de ferro, apresentam tendências de menores teores de Fe, tornando maior a necessidade da redução da fração granulométrica inferior a 150µm, o que torna o processo viável tecnicamente por meio concentração. O método mais comum utilizado é a concentração através da flotação. Flotação é uma técnica de separação baseada na afinidade das espécies minerais com as moléculas de água. Na flotação reversa de minério de ferro, utilizam-se agentes que reforçam o caráter hidrofílico das partículas de Ferro, chamados de depressores. O mais comumente utilizado é o amido de milho em forma de solução, gelatinizado com a adição de soda cáustica. Dentro desse contexto e afim de aumentar o poder de gelatinização do depressor, foram realizados através do planejamento fatorial estatístico, ensaios de flotação em bancada, com diferentes concentrações iniciais e finais de amido de milho presente na solução e ainda a relação de amido/soda para avaliar o impacto sobre a recuperação metalúrgica da flotação, concluindo-se que recuperação metálica foram fortemente influenciados pela concentração inicial da solução de amido.

El presente texto señala los depósitos de zinc y plomos encontrados en los cateos del flanco noroeste del cerro Huancapetí, perteneciente a la Cordillera Negra. En el flanco noroccidental del cerro Huancapetí, hay varias vetas que han sido exploradas por pequeños cateos, cuyas altitudes van desde 4480 hasta 4670 metros. Para llegar a esas vetas solo hay caminos malos que cruzan la cumbre de la cordillera al sur del área de la mina Huancapetí. De otro lado, en 1947 la única mina en actividad era la de Wilson, alcanzando 10 toneladas de concentrados al mes escogidos a mano, así como la mina San Idelfonso, la Improvisada, Mariscal y los cateos Señor de la Soledad y Fernandiita.

IN 1897 I published a proposed explanation t for the variation in color and specific gravity of Pennsylvania oils. A resume of this subject was also presented at the First International Petroleum Congress, in Paris, in 1900. Since that time much experimental work bearing upon this explanation has been carried on by myself, in the United States Geological Survey, and under my direction, by Dr. J. Elliott Gilpin, Marshall P. Cram, and 0. E. Bransky, at the Johns Hopkins University. The experimental results thus accumulated seem to throw considerable additional light upon the variations in color and specific gravity of petroleum, as found in different parts of the world, and also upon the variations in chemical composition. Therefore, it seems as if a, summary of the evidence thus obtained might be of value to those members of the Institute who are interested in the examination of oil-fields. The summary is here presented for that purpose. The phenomenon has often been observed in many oil-fields that oils of different color, specific gravity, and chemical composition may be found within short distances of each other. A conspicuous example of this is the occurrence at Jennings, Welsh, and Anse la Butte, La., of petroleum chemically somewhat similar to Russian petroleum; that is, characterized by the presence of naphthenes. Two distinct types of defects occur at times in copper wire as a result of the use of dies of improper design or undesirable wire-drawing practice. The conditions under which these defects may be produced, as well as precautions to be taken in order to prevent them, have been known to The American Brass Co. for many years. The quality of the copper wire bars and rods has too often and unjustly been held responsible for these particular defects and it is to correct any such belief that this paper is presented. An extremely high quality of electrolytic copper has been supplied to the trade by all refineries for the last 20 years at least. The purity of the copper would average well above 99.900 per cent. The casting of the wire bars has been handled in a generally satisfactory manner. The bars have been cast sound, with a flat to slightly crowning set and have been free from sloppy edges, cold sets, etc. In other words, the wire bars have met A. S. T. M. specifications and have been generally satisfactory. For the most part, they have been everything that could be desired from a quality standpoint yet most of the wire mills in this country and in Europe have at times held the quality of the copper responsible for the two types of defects described in this paper. As a matter of fact, these defects are produced entirely in the wire mills. The author has visited many of the large wire mills in the United States and in Europe to investigate these defects. In some cases the trouble has been so serious that the wire mill has ceased operations. At times the wire mills are reluctant to believe that they are responsible for the defective product. The effect of die design, wire-drawing practice, etc., upon the quality of copper wire has received little study on the part of wire mills, particularly those that have commenced operations in the last few years. Two Types of Defects One type of defect is generally known in this country as "check marks;" in Europe it is termed "crowfeet" (Fig. 1). This investigation was performed to develop chlorination methods for extracting tungsten from scheelite and from an ore concentrate containing a mixture of scheelite and wolframite. On a laboratory scale with proper temperature control using elemental chlorine, over 90 percent extraction of tungsten is achieved. Carbon and sulfur dioxide were studied as reducing agents. The effects of salts such as calcium fluoride and sodium chloride were studied as additives to increase extraction and to reduce impurities in the volatile tungsten chloride product. Sodium chloride reacts with ferric chloride to form a nonvolatile double salt; whereas the chlorides and oxychlorides of tungsten are volatile and consequently condense free of iron. Separation of tungsten from molybdenum from an equal molar mixture was successful by fractionally distilling the oxygen-free chlorides and by selectively condensing the oxychlorides. Yields of 60 and 80 percent, respectively, were achieved for separating the less volatile tungsten chlorides containing less than 0.5 percent molybdenum.

The importance of mine ventilation to health and safety in both coal and metalliferous mines has been long recognised. The primary and secondary ventilation systems in most metalliferous mines incur 50 per cent or more of the total mine electrical power consumption and frequently about 10 per cent of total underground mine operating costs. The requirements for ventilation-related horizontal and vertical development, fans and cooling have a significant impact on mine capital costs and also on mine schedules and start-up times and hence cash flows. There are increasing pressures on regulators and miners to reduce airborne contaminants such as diesel particulatematter, nitrogen dioxide and heat (wet bulb temperatures), and significant pressures to reducegreenhouse gases such as fugitive methane emissions from coalmines and the carbon dioxide footprint of both coal and metalliferous mines. Many previously Australian miners are now globaloperators and have extensive overseas mining operations where local ventilation standards and expertise may not be consistent with Australian practices. The role of the site ventilation officer is also changing with strict new requirements for the statutory position being introduced into Queensland metalliferous mines and the potential for this to become more widespread. Recent regulator and parliamentary review committees have identified systematic shortcomings in mine ventilation compliance, and statutory certificates in both Queensland and NSW now require continuing professional development to maintain currency. Public and investor support for mining are also increasingly contingent on safe, healthy and environmentally responsible practices and the standards for these are frequently tightening. Good ventilation design and operating practices that are consistently well executed therefore contribute significantly not only to a safe and healthy mine but also to a productive and cost-effective operation and the ongoing social licence to operate. There are a variety of ways of providing technical design and oversight into a mine’s ventilation systems; this paper explores some current trends in ventilation standards and statutory requirements, as well as ways to support and develop mine ventilation staff for both domestic and international operations and also the emerging senior technical roles of Group/Principal/Corporate mine ventilation engineer.

INTRODUCTION Our company has made persistent efforts to utilize the very latest cost-saving technology in tunnel design and construction. However, we were relatively late in joining the clan of slurry shield tunnelers. The challenge came in 1973, when our company was low bidder on a major sewer tunnel in Hamburg, West Germany. The tunnel was to be driven under the harbor region through coarse and fine sands with up to 60 ft hydrostatic head of water. Outer diameter was 15 ft, and length was 2.9 miles. This contract appeared right to enter the new field of slurry face tunneling. We gathered a design-engineering team to develop the machine, called it "Hydroshield", and used it on the project. The good performance of the prototype machine encouraged us to improve and modify the equipment design. The very latest model is now in use on a subway tunnel in Antwerp, Belgium. This tunnel is 21 ft outer diameter and 2.4 miles in total length. In terms of excavated volume it is the world's largest slurry shield contract. While the drive is still in full swing, we are currently preparing for 3 further Hydroshield applications, with diameters ranging from 12 to 32 ft. This paper describes the Hydroshield's salient design features, operational characteristics, construction reliability and performance levels, as experienced in West Germany and Belgium.

Copper refineries are constantly looking for methods to upgrade their plants to reduce refining costs and to improve the purity of their electrolytic cathodes at the same time that the purity of the anodes they refine is being lowered by the rehabilitation of reverberatory furnace smelters to one of the direct smelting processes. The comments given below are based on the answers to the questionnaire returned bf the 36 copper refineries that represent 66% of the western world s refining capacity. Eleven refineries employ some form of uniform weight anade casting, e.g., Outokumpu, Contilanode, Mitsubishi, Lurgi, or Hazelett. This type of anode casting presents the best possibility for improving cathode purity. The cathode press of Phelps Dadge can improve current efficiencies and cathode quality. The press is used on first-run cathodes, after 48-60 hours, on half-cells at a time without interruption of the cell current. One refinery interrupts current for sever.al hours to allow the anode slime to settle before the, cathode pressing. The cathode press is now used at eight refineries. Apart from periodic reverse current (PRC), it is not expected that current densities will be increased. Thirty refineries, using direct current, average 231 amps/M, with a low of 178 and a high of 350. Five refineries use PRC at an average of 338 amps/M, with a low of 290 and a high of 380. Current efficiencies are good at an average of 94%, with a low of 88% and a high of 99% for the 34 refineries that reported. It must be remembered that the cycle efficiency with PRC is about 93%., so that the effective current efficiency with PRC would be only .94 X .93 or 87% However, PRC should be considered seriously for refinery expansions because it can save about 25% on capital costs.

Volcanic origin was among the first of the theories advanced to account for the occurrence of the salt domes of the Gulf coastal plain, northern Louisiana, and eastern Texas, and it is still being re-stated in various forms by the most recent contributors to our knowledge of the geology of such deposits. Argument has been largely by analogy and attention has repeatedly been called to the Mexican oil fields, particularly those of the Tampico-Tuxpam region, because of the occurrence of oil in close proximity to volcanic plugs in those fields, an occurrence supposed to have some resemblance to the common occurrence of oil in the salt domes of the United States. The author, having spent several months of the past year in a general study of salt domes and in a detailed study of certain domes in the United States, and having been acquainted for some time with the exploration of similar domes in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, Mexico, and with the general geology of the Tampico-Tuxpam region, Mexico, has reviewed the various theories of volcanic origin for salt domes which have been advanced to the present time. The purpose of this paper is to present such review and to discuss the supposed Mexican analogy. Review of Volcanic Theory R. Thomassyl who had visited the Five Islands of Louisiana between 1857 and 1859, in 1860 described them with some care, noting their distinct character, alignment, and similarity, and ascribing to them a volcanic origin. He regarded them as being akin to the mud lumps in the delta of the Mississippi and was impressed by their symmetry and by the ponds or lakes which occur on several of the islands and which he regarded

Results of comprehensive trace element analyses of samples of Illinois #5 and #6 seam coals and the unquenched ashes obtained from gasification of these coals in a Lurgi reactor are reported and discussed. Areas where additional background information is needed for assessment of the environmental impact of trace element emissions from coal gasification are identified.
