New technology is a significant factor in the present upsurge in world, and Australian, gold extraction and production. The main technologies in current use for gold production are described, referring to overseas developments. Areas where existing techniques have shortcomings or new methods are needed are pinpointed and discussed. Much research work on gold metallurgy is under way round the world, and many new developments have potential. Many of the current research activities round the world are covering unusual and striking areas, with surprising results starting to come through. Some of the "blue sky" techniques reportedly under investigation are identified, together with consideration of when changes in technology are of value. The consequences of new technology for personnel involved in gold plant operations will be raised, including the new education now required.

Current trend of the global flow of strategic metals are analyzed to discuss the strategy of the development of recycling technology and alternative technology. In many cases, each global flow of metal is changing from the trilateral structure of U.S., EU and Japan in the later 20th century into the convergence to China as the factory of the world. Scrap flows are also changing dynamically. A long term change of prices of metal has gotten changed since the entrance of this century. The estimation of metal consumption up to 2050, in which the author estimated that many kinds of metal will overshoot the reserve base line, is revised considering these change of current trends.

Your committee doesn't assign any easy topics to us speakers. How do you define "successful" in what is essentially a losing game? I am reminded of the fellow who returned from a one-week vacation in Las Vegas, and proudly stated, "I only lost $150." To him, that was "success." I am afraid that workers' compensation is a losing game for employers, too, and success has to be defined in terms of how much or how little is lost. We have no chance of producing a profit for our employer. We will narrow down to some suggestions about conducting a workers' compensation program at the plant level, but first I want to discuss the general legal, social and legislative climate in which your plant program operates. Workers' compensation is a statutory program with its general parameters established by the legislature. These parameters are then amplified by the boards and commissions established to administer workers' compensation. What influences the legislature and the boards and commissions as they establish the framework in which we must function?

The primary objective of mining companies is to function as a profitable business by delivering products that fit customer requirements in a safe and sustainable manner. Optimum resource utilisation is a critical focus area to achieve this objective, and the long-term sustainable business performance of a mining company is determined by the extent to which this is achieved. Technology improvements and/or new technology development could improve resource utilisation. However, adding new projects to a Brownfield operation carries risk. Overall project schedules, tie-in schedules and safety risks normally receive adequate attention, but the introduction and integration of new technology to a Brownfield site also carries the significant risk of failure to achieve design performance (quality or throughput). This risk must be addressed via rigorous design phase risk assessments and piloting. Post commissioning, the effective metallurgical integration of any new technology/circuit/process plant into an existing process plant calls for critical assessment, through circuit performance testing, and optimisation to ensure alignment with design criteria. In addition, this approach provides clear focus areas for further optimisation of the new plant and additional opportunity for overall plant optimisation. Roy Hill recently navigated this process successfully, and this paper provides feedback on the journey that led to improved resource utilisation.

surgimento de fases intermetálicas em aços é matéria de grande interesse devido ao caráter nocivo que elas podem conferir às propriedades mecânicas do material. No presente trabalho, foi estudado o efeito do surgimento da fase sigma em um aço inoxidável duplex através de modelamento numérico-computacional. A microestrutura duplex foi obtida via simulação, sendo, então utilizada como matriz para a nucleação e crescimento da fase sigma, também via simulação. O método do Cone Causal foi utilizado para o desenvolvimento da microestrutura e os resultados foram comparados com a metodologia da cinética formal de JMAK para fins de validação do modelo. Os resultados da simulação permitem obter, através da Regra das Misturas, predições sobre as propriedades mecânicas do material, no caso, o limite de resistência à tração, que foi comparado com os dados encontrados na literatura. Foi possível constatar o aumento do limite de resistência à tração para maiores frações volumétricas de sigma, o que traz como resultado a diminuição da ductilidade para o aço.

"Mineral exploration in the Sicker Group, a belt of Paleozoic volcano-sedimentary rocks on Vancouver Island, has traditionally centred on auriferous polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits such as those currently mined by Westmin Resources Ltd. near Buttle Lake. Recently, however, the focus of exploration in the Sicker Group has shifted toward targets of structurally controlled gold concentrations, with notable success. Major north and northwesterly-trending structural features such as the Cowichan-Horne Lake break (one of several regional high-angle thrust fault s active throughout a long period of geological time) and related fault systems have contributed to localization of gold mineralization.Using the extensive information database compiled by MPH Consulting Limited during numerous exploration projects in the Sicker Group, two cross sections through areas with significant gold occurrences southeast of Port Alberni are presented. The cross sections combine geological, geochemical and geophysical data in an attempt to emphasize the relationship between structural trends and gold mineralization. Examples from specific properties, including gold discoveries along the Mineral Creek fault zone, are used to illustrate this relationship."

Mining is being carried out using the sublevel open stoping method at the Kayad underground mine. The mine will ultimately reach a depth of 390 m. Kayad village is only 100 m (horizontally) from the underground mining areas. As a result, blast-induced ground vibration is one of the major issues for the residents of the village. This paper deals with the process involved in optimising blast design parameters at the development face blast, slot raise blast and ring hole blast to control blast-induced vibration within safe limits while ensuring improved production, productivity and safety. In total, 1041 development face blasts, 110 slot raise blasts and 52 ring hole blasts were conducted, and 2612 vibration data were monitored in the village at different locations. Initially, electronic delay detonators were used, with an emphasis on controlling vibration in the surface structures. Subsequently, shock tube (Nonel) initiations were used as the blasting faces reached lower depths. A comparative study was also performed for both the initiation systems. The orebody width generally varied from 3.1 to 7 m, and ring hole designs were optimised accordingly. The number of holes in a ring was up to seven and the depth was up to 23 m, depending on the size/width of the orebody. The ring blasts were performed with 64–340 kg of emulsion cartridge explosive and detonated with explosive weight per delay of 10.92–17.16 kg. Extensive experiments were performed and blast-induced vibrations were controlled in the village. Deck blasting (ie up to four explosives decks) was used in a blasthole and the explosive charges were separated by delay detonators, which helped to control the vibration in the village. The actual detonation time of each deck was recorded by monitoring the in-hole velocity of detonation of the explosives, and the charging patterns were optimised accordingly to get the desired blast results.CITATION:Roy, M P, Singh, P K, Sarim, M, Jaitawat, P S and Joshi, A, 2015. The basic goal of this investigation was to determine the degree of drying of high moisture lignite through the use of high temperature and pressure steam autoclaves. Specific items studied were: a) the effect of lignite particle size, b) steam temperature and pressure required, and c) the time of ahydration. Although removal of sodium, ash, sulfur and other ash-forming minerals was not the goal of this study, basic analysis of effluent water showed organic material and alkalai metal content. Removal of inherent moisture from run-of-mine lignite was tested by lock-feeding the lignite, which was previously sized by screening into 25 kg autoclaves. High pressure, up to 4.053 MPa (588 psi), saturated steam was then introduced into the pressure reactor. Reaction time, pressure, temperature, and depressurization rates were strictly controlled for each reactor test run. Results indicate that about 80% of lignite total moisture was removed, including some of the inherent moisture, yielding a non-oxidized, and thus stable, lignite product. As stated, a side benefit occurred as some reduction of non-combustible portions of the lignite also took place. The conclusion reached as a result of the tests is that the steam-drying process can be successfully applied to reducing moisture in lignite, and may be considered for additional studies on acceleration of the coalification process. On the basis of the data presented, the author believes that lignite can be economically upgraded in steam autoclaves by simultaneously reducing the moisture content by 80 percent and the sulfur content by at least 50 percent. Upgrading the lignite by this method will result in large energy and financial savings.

This report, which covers the period from January 16 to October 21, 1974, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of contract no. H0242028 and modifications 1 and 2 thereto. The purpose of the contract was to further reline and modify three of the canopies (shuttle car, loader, and roof drill) which were developed under contract no. H0220031, and to conduct further testing and demonstration of the relined designs. Modifications I and 2 involved conducting further in-mine evaluations of the face. drill and cutter canopies, also developed under contract no. H0220031. In addition to the canopy modifications, the contract involved an evaluation of an operator's seat concept for a shuttle car which was developed for the USBM by another contractor.

The Technology Application Center, in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of Mines Liaison Program, is studying the use of Landsat data for the monitoring of coal surface mine reclamation activities. Landsat may provide sufficient information to reduce the number of on-site inspections now required. The focus of the project has been the Navajo Coal Mine located in north- western New Mexico and operated by Utah International, Inc. On October 15, 1977, a field team recorded spectral measurements at the mine during the time of Landsat's overpass and a corresponding aerial photographic flight. Training sets were selected from the ground and aircraft data representing vegetated, graded, ungraded and natural environments. A supervised classification of the data was performed by the Stanford University Remote Sensing Laboratory then correlated to aerial photos and mine maps. The results, to date, have been very encouraging.

Industries that handle and process ‘dusty’ ores are facing increasingly difficult challenges to ensure sustainable operation and development. Most existing dust-control measures treat only the symptoms of dust generation and do not deal with the root cause/s of the problem. Many of these methods are also relatively inefficient in terms of controlling dust emissions. This paper summarises the various existing options available for dust control and some of their features, advantages and disadvantages. It then describes some of the new technologies that are being researched, developed and employed to minimise dust emissions by addressing dustability or dustiness and the dust generation mechanisms found in industry. Recent research results and case studies are presented to demonstrate some interesting findings obtained from this work. With improved understanding and modelling of dust generation mechanisms and bulk material dustiness, it is possible to achieve a step-change improvement in the design, troubleshooting and application of more efficient dust-control technologies.CITATION:Wypych, P W, Hastie, D B, Wangchai, S and Grima, A P, 2015. Calcium ferrite slags are often associated with Professor Yazawa due to his pioneering work on the thermodynamics of this type of melts. Over the past years CSIRO has invested some effort in studying physico-chemical properties of such melts to fill in some gaps in our knowledge and explore opportunities for application of the understanding developed. These investigations cover thermodynamics, transport properties of calcium ferrite based slags, as well as the kinetics of reactions of such slags with refractories. The present paper provides an overview of some of these studies and highlights some of the interesting behavior of such melts. The oxidation state of copper and arsenic in calcium ferrite based slags are predominantly Cu+ and As3+, respectively, at oxygen potentials below 10.1 atm. The concentration ofCu2+ in such slags becomes significant at oxygen potentials of greater than 10'1 atm at 1300 ?C. The activities of CuOo.s and AsOl.S in calcium ferrite slags show strong deviations from the Raoultian Law, while that of CoO is very close to ideal behaviour with respect to pure solid CoO. Addition of Si02 to calcium ferrite slags can have significant effects on the activities of FeO and Fe2O3 and hence the stability of magnetite phase. Transfer of oxygen in calcium ferrite slags is fast with diffusivity of 2xlO?3 cm2/s at 1350 °C and activation energy of 16 kcal/mol Presence of solid phases, such as magnetite, has pronounced effect on the viscosity of calcium ferrite slags. The observed dependence on solid loading and shear rate indicates deviation from Newtonian behaviour. The interfacial tension between copper mattes and calcium ferrite slags is strongly dependent on the matte grade, with the determined values being much lower than the corresponding ones for interfacial tension between similar mattes and iron silicate slags. MgO, Cr2O3 and MgCr2O4 have low solubility in calcium ferrite slags and their solubility increases with increasing copper oxide content of the slag at 1300 °c. The oxidation state of the slag has strong effects on phase transformation, dissolution rate and disintegration of refractories in calcium ferrite slags. Other key factors with major impact on slag-refractory interactions include viscosity and surface tension of slags as well as the contact angle between slag and refractory material.

Neste trabalho é apresentado uma metodologia para caracterização de propriedades ópticas e espessura de óleo depositado em folha-de-flandres por elipsometria. Folhas-de-flandres precisam receber ao final do seu processo de produção um fino filme de óleo para proteger a folha contra abrasão e facilitar o desempilhamento quando é armazenada em fardos. Para medida da espessura desta camada de óleo foi desenvolvido um procedimento eficaz com o uso de um Elipsômetro Espectrométrico (ou Espectral) de Polarizador Rotativo. Foram comparados os resultados com estudos feitos pelo método da balança de hidrofil, técnica utilizada atualmente, mostrando um aumento na sensibilidade da medida.

Este trabalho visa as análises metalograficas qualitativas da região de solda e a análises qualitativas e semi- quantitativa da corrosão em juntas soldadas pelo processo SMAW em tubos do aço API 5L X-70, em solução de NaCl; afim de simular um eventual ambiente de trabalho do aço em questão, conhecer seu comportamento para consequentemente prever e evitar danos corrosivos e diminuição de custos. Para realização do trabalho um tubo de Aço API 5L X70 foi cortado, soldado e dividido em corpos de prova e então imersos em solução de NaCl nas concentrações de 1,5% e 4,5%, os corpos de prova foram imersos em soluções estáticas e em agitação. As amostras foram devidamente preparadas de acordo com a norma ASTM G31 para o ensaio de imersão e ficaram imersos por 75 dias. Foi feito o cálculo de perda de massa, taxa de corrosão e micrografias. As amostras apresentaram corrosão do tipo generalizada e por pites, comprovando a teoria de que as amostras com maior concentração e agitadas tiveram uma maior taxa de corrosão, e um maior número de pites. Através das micrografias, foram observadas uma maior concentração de pites na zona termicamente afetada, e também na zona fundida nas amostras que tiveram uma maior concentração de pites. No metal de base houve a presença de pites em menor proporção. No geral pode-se dizer que a junta apresentou uma tolerância à corrosão razoável neste meio.

Visando garantir o nível de qualidade dos produtos e o controle do processamento do aço para atender aos requisitos dos clientes e das normas técnicas aplicáveis e manter-se competitivo no mercado de aços longos com redução contínua de custos, um dos grandes desafios das aciarias elétricas é promover o aumento do rendimento de suas ferro-ligas melhorando ao mesmo tempo os processos de desoxidação e dessulfuração, além da limpeza interna do banho. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da adição de carbureto de cálcio durante o vazamento das corridas do aço 1026-D nestas variáveis, através da análise estatística e termodinâmica de dados de corridas experimentais, com e sem adição de carbureto de cálcio. Foi demonstrado que a adição desse insumo melhora de forma significativa os parâmetros metalúrgicos de qualidade do material e reduz o custo de transformação para a fabricação desse produto através da redução do consumo de ferro-ligas.

Access to information is a key component for making improvements to any process. This is particularly true for all aspects of the iron mining and steelmaking process. The ability to make rapid control decisions can significantly influence process outcomes, including ensuring product specification, mining quality, transportation limits, upgrade factors, waste bypass and direct shipping, among many others. While traditional laboratory methods provide feedback for such processes, having access to analysis results in real-time can lead to positive reactive and predictive control decisions to be made rapidly, leading to significant improvements throughout the process. Scantech has been designing, manufacturing and supplying technological products to the minerals industry since 2002 to enable the availability of such realtime information to a mine or plant, with the benefits being enjoyed by a wide range of operators. This paper provides a summary of the available technologies used in the iron ore and steel industries, as well as providing a case study of their use at an Australian site, and a description of the potential benefits of a range of analysis equipment.

The investigation reported herein is concerned with the generation and propagation of the strain wave produced in rock by the detonation of a high-velocity explosive. This report is the second of a series that will deal with this and related problems. The rock type in which these experiments were carried out was greenstone. Subsequent reports will discuss similar investigations in other rock types. Specifically, the problem under study is concerned with how certain characteristics of the strain wave, such as the maximum compressive and tensile strain, the maximum time rate of change of strain, the frequency components present in the pulse, the duration of the pulse, and other measurable characteristics, vary with the size of the charge and the distance from the detonation point to the point of measurement. . Other investigators have studied certain aspects of the generation and propagation problem in rock. However, in these studies the travel distances from the detonation to measurement point were comparatively long and the frequency components in the explosive wave were usually under 100 c.p.s. In this study the detonation to measurement distance covered. the range from 2 to 54 feet, and the strain gages and recording equipment employed in the instrumentation of the problem had a frequency response range from 200 to 10,000 c.p.s.

"New Rheocasting is a novel route of semi-solid casting, in which the globular semi-solid precursor material is produced by controlled cooling of only slightly superheated melts in conventional steel crucibles. The resulting semi-solid slugs are placed into the sleeve of a vertical Squeeze Casting Machine and then filled into steel dies. Solidification occurs under hydraulic pressures up to 100 MPa Due to the reduced cost of precursor material, reduced investment cost and easier recycling, the New Rheocasting process offers cost reductions of up to 25% over conventional semi-solid casting · routes. The New Rheocast products are pore free, pressure tight, weldable and heat treatable castings.In the present work the New Rheocasting Process is introduced and the influence of heat treatment on mechanical properties of the New Rheocast alloy A356 is discussed.The alloy A356 is cast under ideal New Rheocasting conditions into a step die on an UBE HVSC 350 Squeeze Casting machine. As-east, TS and T6 heat treatment conditions with variations in solutionizing and aging time/temperature parameters are applied and the samples are tested by tensile testing. Alternatively, the same heat treatment conditions are applied to conventional Squeeze Casting parts and compared with New Rheocasting.Questions of potential cost savings due to modified heat treatment conditions are also addressed in this paper."

El presente texto señala diversas alternativas y usos para un modelo dirigido a la optimización de una operación minera en el corto plazo, incidiendo en los aspectos mineros, metalúrgicos y comerciales. El modelo se basa en la función de utilidad financiera, cuando ésta es optimizada respecto de las variables que la conforman. Se prescinde de la variable tiempo, al considerarse este modelo como de corto plazo. Se presentan cuatro ejemplos, dos simulados con data real y dos prácticos basados en el resultado actual de la operación. Asimismo, se provee al usuario una visión integral que incluye las actividades principales de la cadena de valor en la minería; unificando criterios y evaluando los efectos de cada una de las decisiones del operador minero en la rentabilidad global de la operación, al variar los principales parámetros en el proceso productivo.

IN present-day flotation practice, grinding of the flotation feed is carried to extremely fine sizes, 70 to 80 per cent minus 200 mesh being customary. The greatest flotation losses occur in the coarsest and finest sizes, but the losses in the very fine sizes are, of course, much the more important because of the large proportion of fines in the feed. These losses are particularly high in zinc ores so a study of the effect of size on the flotation of sphalerite has been made. The mineral used in these experi¬ments was a pure sphalerite, especially free from copper, from the Joplin district in Missouri. The sizes coarser than 200 mesh were separated by screening, the sized mineral then being deslimed on a Wilfley table. The sizes finer than 200 mesh were obtained by water elutriation as described by H. R. Bradford (M. S. Thesis, University of Utah, 1932) ; particles finer than 6.5 microns could not be obtained with the apparatus used.
