The Atlantic City district encompasses several districts and has been previously called by different names, e.g., Atlantic gold district, Atlantic City-South Pass mining district, and Sweetwater mining district. The district is located in a terrane of folded and faulted early Precambrian metamorphic rocks which lies near the south end of the Wind River Range in Fremont County, Wyoming, Historically it is a gold district of little production, but today is an iron district of considerable importance. Gold was discovered in placer deposits about 1842 and in quartz-arsenopyrite veins about 1867, after which there occurred a mining boom lasting a few years. Minor, intermittent gold production from placers and lodes has continued to date, but the total production has probably not exceeded a few millions of dollars. Past lode mining was generally shallow ( in the oxidized zone), the deepest about 3 60 feet. The deeper, less oxidized and sulfide ores on the same lodes have not been explored. They appear to hold the only hope for future gold mining. Sedimentary iron-formation, similar to the Lake Superior taconite, occurs in the northern part of the district. Locally, where the ironformation is thickened by folds and faults, sufficient tonnages are present to be minable, as at Iron Mountain, where the U.S. Steel Corporation produces about 1.3 million tons of iron-ore pellets annually. Exploration of the iron deposits began in 1954, and the first ironore pellets were shipped to Provo, Utah in August 1962. Indicated reserves of iron-formation (about 30 per cent Fe) are reported to be about 300 million tons.

The method for determining oil and water saturations described herein has been used successfully for several years in the core laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus constructed according to the original specifications has proved very satisfactory; in fact, it has been widely adopted by core laboratories throughout the petroleum industry. The writers have found that the method gives reproducible results, the degree of accuracy depending largely on the attention to details given by the operator. The relative importance of these details of procedure and the design of the apparatus are discussed in this report. In September 1940, the Bureau of Mines published a report describing a method used in its laboratories for the determination of the water content of oil-field cores. The procedure was essentially the same as that adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials for the determination of the water content of petroleum products, although the apparatus and technique were altered slightly to increase the precision of the method and to adapt it to the characteristics of the material to be tested. The report also contained a description of the method used at that time in the Bureau’s core laboratories for measuring the oil content of a core, utilizing the sample on which the water-saturation determination had been made. The procedure involved the transfer of the weighed sample, from which the water had been distilled and measured, to a Soxhlet extractor and the removal of the remaining oil by means of a suitable solvent. Soon after the report was published, the water-determination apparatus described therein was modified so that both the oil and water contents of a core sample could be determined simultaneously. This method, which has been described by Yuster, is now widely used throughout the industry.

The Phelps Dodge Corporation's Morenci Concentrator includes facilities for coarse crushing, fine crushing, grinding, flotation, tailing, disposal, concentrate filtering, and drying. The Morenci Concentrator daily throughput is in excess of 60, 000 tons. The ore milled is mainly a medium-hard monzonite porphyry in which the principal sulfide minerals are chalcocite and pyrite. The ore is transported by rail from the Open Pit Mine to the primary crushing plant located at the concentrator site. Ore is side-dumped from 80¬ton railroad cars into a sixty-inch gyratory crusher. The ore is then conveyed to a. 12, 000 ton coarse ore storage bin. Fine crushing is accomplished by four parallel lines of conventionally stacked crushers in open circuit. Each unit consists of one seven-foot standard cone followed by two seven-foot shortheads. Ti% product of the fine crushing plant is distributed by two tripper cars across a fine ore storage bin. The crushed ore is then fed by variable speed belt feeders into thirty parallel, single stage, closed circuit grinding units. Each of the 30 grinding units consists of one 6' x 23' conditioning drum, one 10' x 10' ha l mill and two 54" duplex spiral classifiers as principal equipment. The dry ore is fed into the conditioning drum with water to dilute the ore to a slurry of approximately 78% solids by weight. An aqueous solution of ammonium sulfide is also added to the conditioning drum. The ammonium sulfide primarily acts as a sulfidizing agent. The ore slurry containing the naturally occurring sulfide copper minerals and the sulfidized copper minerals discharges into the feed scoop box of the ball mill, where milk of lime, collector and-.dilution water are added. Entre estes setores estão os de planejamento e programação da manutenção. O presente estudo de caso descreve uma iniciativa de alinhamento estratégico realizada pela equipe de planejamento de manutenção da unidade Ubu da Samarco Mineração S/A, uma empresa de mineração e pelotização de minério de ferro, localizada no estado do Espírito Santo. A partir de uma revisão na estratégia corporativa foram derivados a missão, visão e valores da equipe. Esses por sua vez, serviram de base para uma revisão dos processos de trabalho e para a definição de ações de melhoria. Por fim foram estabelecidos indicadores para mensurar a realização da visão. Os resultados apresentados por esses indicadores comprovam que as equipes de planejamento podem obter e demonstrar resultados significativos através de técnicas elementares de planejamento estratégico.

Paste tailings disposal was successfully implemented at the New Jersey mill in Kellogg, ID with two different types of ore feed, a gold ore and a silver ore. The purpose of this paper is to describe the production of paste tailings, including operational problems during commissioning, and also highlight the environmental and economic benefits that were realized versus conventional tailings disposal such as the recycling of process water, increased shear strength and reduced permeability of the tailings mass, and reduced environmental permitting.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted considerable research to improve life support technology for underground mining applications. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that may help increase the chances of mine workers in surviving underground disasters. Several papers address the performance of present self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's) and provide proposed guidelines for the design and testing of a second-generation SCSR. Improvements In the safety and effectiveness of mine rescue and recovery operations are described, including the design of a low-profile rescue breathing apparatus and a rescue team helmet.

Studies of used or unused refractory materials are excellent examples of applied mineralogy in industry. Refractory materials are mineral substances containing ceramic or chemical bonding systems. Knowledge of the mineral composition, bonding, and textural relationships often explains the resulting physical property values of a refractory and contributes to the interpretation of refractory wear mechanisms occurring in steel plant service.

Relatively pure aluminum nitride (AIN) recently has been prepared in sufficiently large amounts to permit a variety of experimental studies.4/ Several mechanical and chemical properties have been investigated, which show that this substance has good potentialities as a container for liquid aluminum, gallium, and boric oxide. The present work by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to obtain thermo-dynamic data pertinent to the calculations regarding thermal stability and reactivity of aluminum nitride. The following measurements were made: (1) determination of the heat of formation from the elements at 298.15° K.; (2) determinations of the heat capacity over the temperature range 51° to 298.15° K. and the evaluation of the entropy at 298.15° K. therefrom; and (3) determinations of the heat content over the temperature range 298.15° to 1,800° K. These data are combined to obtain free energies of formation from the elements between 298.15° and 2,000° K.

Sodion activity data have been obtained for the Na-A1 system for sodium concentrations in aluminum between NN, = 25 . 10-and 300 x 10'. This concentration intert-a2 encompasses those sodium concentrations nor1)zally encountered in aluminum reduction cell operation. The sodium activity data were measured by a two-phase equilibration of sodium between a lead and an aluminam rich phase. The Na-Pb system was emplojed as a reference for the determination of the actiz7itj 0.f sodium. The activity of sodiin in aluminuwz exhibits large positi2.e deviations frorn ideality and a strong dependence, on concentration below NN, = 100 x 1K6. The inteated data indicate that the activity of aluminium is equal to its mole fraction over the range of miscibility of the Na-A1 sgstem. The data on the Na-A1 binary have been combined with experimental data on the cryolite-A1 system at 1025°C to obtain the activities of Na F and AlF, in liquid cryolite oz2er the cornposition 1-ange encountered in aluminum cell operation. The results are in agreement with activities calculated from the NaF-AlF, phase diagram. ALUMINUM is produced commercially by the electrolytic reduction of aluminum oxide dissolved in molten cryolite. There is considerable controversy over the actual mechanism of the discharge processes, but sodium potentials in the systems appear to play an important role in the reduction mechanism. The metal-salt reaction involving NaF and aluminum to produce A1F3 and sodium is responsible for the presence of sodium in the aluminum metal phase. Additional sodium may be produced from the simultaneous deposition of sodium and aluminum at the cathode as a result of a cathodic overvoltage. runert' has suggested that sodium gas at atmospheric pressure would be the result of reaction between cryolite and aluminum at 1000°C. Subsequent investigations have shown that production of sodium at atmospheric pressure does not occur. These later investigations can be conveniently separated into two categories. The first involves sodium, aluminum, and cryolite, in which the sodium activity was measured. The second includes a lead phase for sodium activity measurement. Jander and errmann,' studied the reaction: at 1090°C in alumina crucibles under an atmosphere of dry, oxygen-free nitrogen. The equilibrium constant for the reaction was expressed in terms of concentration. Their results in Fig. 1 show an increase in sodium content of the aluminum with increasing NaF/A1F3 weight ratio. Pearson and waddington3 performed similar experiments at 1000°C. Their results are included in Fig. 1. Dewing and ollinshead have measured the sodium content of aluminum as a function of the NF/AF, ratio at 1025"C, Fig. 1, and ewin' measured the sodium content of the aluminum in a system involving the solid reactants NaF, cryolite, and liquid aluminum. This reaction is different from those discussed above. Two solid phases, NaF and Na3A1F6, and a liquid aluminum phase were present. The sodium concentration in the aluminum was determined by the temperature. Dewing's measurements covered the temperature range 679" to 896°C. Compared with conventional roasting and magnetic separation processes, higher reduction temperatures and stronger reducing atmospheres are used in reduction technologies to reduce iron oxides to metallic iron, which is often liberated during reduction and amenable to magnetic separation. Reduction and magnetic separation of an Australian refractory iron ore was therefore studied as a function of reduction temperature, time, coal addition, feed thickness and size of Australia iron ore. It was found that during reduction, the particle size of the reduced iron increased with reduction temperature and time. Subsequent magnetic separation tests were further conducted on the reduction products. A reduced iron powder with a Fe grade of 85.67% was obtained at a Fe recovery of 87.82% under optimum reduction conditions where a metallization rate of 85.82% was achieved. The mechanism involved in reduction is discussed based on XRD and SEM examinations. And the results indicated that theiron minerals such as hematite and limonite in the Australian iron ore were reduced as follows: Fe2O3?Fe3O4?FeO?Fe. Furthermore, the metallic iron particles produced by reduction increased in size with longer reduction times.

Li-ion batteries are now used in electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Nanostructured Li(NiyMnzCo1-y-z)O2 is one of the more popular cathode chemistries for automotive Li-ion battery, due to its enhanced properties such as large surface area, short diffusion length, enhanced ionic and electronic conductivity, improved mechanical strength and structural integrity [Pan et al, 2013]. Recycling of Li-ion batteries helps to mitigate environmental effects of virgin metal extractions along with improper disposal of end of life batteries. To fulfill these objectives of the recycling, recovery of pure streams of the involved metals should be considered. In this study, the batteries were first discharged and dismantled in an inert atmosphere (Ar). The electrodes were then heat treated in a box furnace. This was done in order to break the chains of the adhesive (PVDF) and consequently separate the metallic substrates Cu and Al from the electrochemically active compound. This heat-treatment also helped to simplify the dissolution of the metal constituents in the electrochemically active compound from the cathode in the acid leaching process. Solvent extraction was chosen to achieve separation and recovery of metals with higher purity from these leachates. In the scope of the present work, a complete process from the point of dismantling to separation of constituent metals using solvent extraction was studied.

This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low-and high-rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

BAUXITE is known mainly as the ore from which aluminum is smelted but it has large use also in the manufacture of artificial abrasives and as a basis for certain chemical industries. A small amount is used for refractories and for other purposes. COMPOSITION Dana and others give the mineral formula of bauxite as A1203.2H20 and the composition as A12037 73.9 pct; H2O, 26.1 pct. It has been definitely shown, however, that bauxite does not exist as a specific mineral but rather as a rock. The term is now used synonymously with aluminum ore and it embraces gibbsite (hydrargillite or alpha trihydrate), A1203.3H20 (A12037 65.4 pct; H2O, 34.6 pct); boehmite (alpha mono¬hydrate), A1203.H20(Al203) 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct); diaspore (beta monohydrate), A1203.H2O(A12037 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct), and mixtures in various proportions of any two of them. Bauxite of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic in Europe is predominantly a mixture of gibbsite and boehmite, subordinately a mixture of boehmite and diaspore, or gibbsite and diaspore. The bauxite of North and South America, tropical Africa, Asia, and Australasia consists largely of gibbsite. Corundum (A1203) is not included under bauxite, although gradations from bauxite to emery or corundum exist. All bauxite, irrespective of the aluminum minerals composing it, contains certain impurities, including silica, in the form of clay minerals (kaolinite, halloysite, and others) or quartz, iron oxide (as hematite or goethite), titania (as leucoxene or rutile), iron sulphide (as pyrite or marcasite), iron carbonate (siderite), and calcium carbonate (as calcite); the last three mentioned in minor amount and of local occurrence only. Trench cutter systems have been used in civil engineering for the least 30 years for the installation of deep cut-off walls, retaining walls and foundation systems. The systems are constantly advanced to achieve greater depth, penetrate through harder rocks a provide a bigger footprint of the cutter. The state-of-the-art equipment can reach down to 250 m vertical depth and penetrate all different types of soils and rocks up to 150 MPa unconfined compressive strength.In mining, especially in commodities with a high value and where the ore deposit has a small footprint, cutter mining with vertical attack from the existing ground level will be a new, cost-efficient approach where conventional open pit mining is not economically feasible due to a high stripping ratio. The same applies for open pit mines that have reached the end of their conventional mine life and where going underground is also uneconomical. The BAUER Cutter Mining System, which has been adapted to the special needs of mining, is a new technology that will allow mining at depths of up to 250 m.The same system can be also applied to ore dykes, be it vertical or slightly inclined, concentrating the excavation on the actual orebody and minimising the strip ratio and the contamination of ore. The system can be adapted to the dimension of the dykes or veins and to the rock conditions.BAUER’s latest approach is to use the vertical cutter mining technology for the extraction of sea floor massive sulfides from the seabed in deep ocean waters. Due to the compact footprint of the system and the vertical attack for mining, extraction of the ore can be concentrated on the hot spots, minimising the environmental impact on the sea floor both for mining and manoeuvring the remote-controlled mining tool.CITATION:Schwank, S K, 2015. TEE purpose of this article is not only to describe the plant and method of cyaniding the Treadwell concentrates, but to present some of the results of the experimental work obtained in the past three years for the Alaska-Treadwell Gold Mining Co., at Douglas Island, Alaska., under the direction of F. W. Bradley, Consulting Engineer, and Robert A. Kinzie, General Superintendent, of the affiliated companies. At the time the experimental work was undertaken the concentrates were being shipped to the smeltery at Tacoma, Wash., and the cost for treatment of 3-oz. (gold) concentrates was $11.95 per ton, divided as follows: Smelting-charges, . $4.00 Loading, freight, insurance, etc., 2.89 Interest due to time lost in transit and in settlement, . 0.05 Loss due to settlement for 95 per cent. of the gold at $20 per ounce, 5.01 Total, . . $11.95 From the experimental work described later, it was estimated that 96 per cent. extraction could be made by treatment on the ground, and that the cost, when treating 80 tons per day, would be $3.25 per ton, divided as follows; Per Day. Falling into the weak rocks category, fault breccias have extremely poor engineering properties. These pebbles typically cause issues with slopes, subterranean construction, and building projects. Professionals will benefit from the creation of some predictive models for fault breccia triaxial strength, as smooth specimen preparation is typically challenging and timeconsuming. The purpose of this study is to develop some predictive models for the differential stress (Δσ) based on physical and textural properties. Artificial neural networks were used to analyse data related to Misis fault breccia. Initially, models with moderate (noticeable, but not good) correlation coefficients were created using multiple regression analysis. After that, the regression models and three distinct artificial neuron network models were contrasted. Regression models are weaker and less trustworthy than artificial neuron network models, as demonstrated by this comparison. Pointed out is the practicality and ease of use of the artificial neuron network model with S-wave velocity and volumetric block proportion. Ultimately, it can be concluded that artificial neuron networks analysis provides a reliable indirect method for predicting the differential stress of Misis fault breccia.

"The Lonmin Base Metal Refinery treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode as well as a concentrate containing the platinum group (PGM) metals. The original process employed a Sherritt design and utilizes atmospheric and pressure leaches for the dissolution of base metals. This paper describes the original flow sheet and the improvements made to enhance PGM recoveries, product quality and to increase capacity. Changes include the introduction of flash recycle cooling on the autoclave, batch leaches to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate and the implementation of solid-liquid separation with centrifuges. INTRODUCTIONThe Lonmin Base Metal Refinery (BMR) is about 100 km north-west of Johannesburg and treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode and a concentrate containing the PGMs. The plant was commissioned in 1985 based on a Sherritt design to treat 12 tonnes converter matte per day. The original flow sheet consists of a milling circuit, an atmospheric leach and a pressure leach to produce a PGM concentrate which is despatched by helicopter to the Lonmin Platinum refinery in Brakpan, about 40 km east of Johannesburg. The liquor from the atmospheric leach is treated by crystallization to produce a nickel sulphate hexa-hydrate crystal. The leach liquor from the pressure leach is treated by a selenium removal step followed by electro-winning to produce copper cathode. The spent solution from the copper electro-winning is recycled to both the atmospheric and pressure leach steps to provide sulphuric acid for the leaching reactions.Modifications were made to the original circuit to increase the plant capacity, to improve the PGM recoveries and to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate. Capacity increases included all the unit operations, new mill, new first stage, additional autoclaves, additional nickel sulphate crystallizers, new copper electro-winning and new batch leach reactors for upgrading the PGM concentrate. The current circuit is described in this paper and not the detailed history of each plant change."
