During the summer of 1994, a new PID-based control strategy was installed on line B of the grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. Part I of this paper described the methodology used to select the appropriate control strategy using a phenomenological dynamic simulator. Part II presents the implementation of the control strategy. Prior to the controller installation, it was necessary to solve various problems related to the process, such as a cyclic behaviour of the rod mill feed tonnage, a problem related to the mill water source and the calibration of the flowmeters. Once these problems were solved, the control strategy was accomplished in two steps. Step 1 corresponds to the installation of control loops to regulate the pump box level and the cyclone overflow density. Step 2 describes the implementation of a loop to control the cyclone feed density. According to Part I, a loop to control the circulating load is also part of the original design. However, reasons are given to explain the rejection of this loop. For both steps, technical procedures such as filtering, process identification and controller tuning are detailed. Finally, the operator’s interface is briefly described.

For over 40 years the Institute of Innovative Technology EMAG has specialized in the development of systems and equipment for laboratory and on-line monitoring of coal quality parameters, as well as the implementation of these systems and devices in mines and power stations. Some of these systems, based on advanced radiation detection techniques such as ?-ray backscattering (ALFA-06 and ALFA -06/T systems) or dual energy ?-ray transmission measurement (ALFA-06/2E ash meter), and also the ALFA-06/3E system applying microwave technology for the measurement of moisture, have had numerous applications in Poland. At present, over 100 systems and devices are used in Polish hard and brown coal mines. For over 10 years, EMAG has been specializing in the development of systems and devices, based on natural gamma measurement technology. An on-line ash meter, RODOS and RODOS Ex, based on measurement of natural gamma radioactivity of coal, has been developed and put into operation. This technique has been also used in developing the portable ash meter WALKER and laboratory analyzer GAMMA NATURA. The paper briefly presents features of the above-mentioned devices, their limits and their obtained accuracy, but in particular refers to the laboratory analyzer, GAMMA NATURA, as the first such device in the world, and presents the results of ash and moisture content measurement in hard, brown coals and potassium salts. The possible applications and advantages of the device in coal mines are discussed. The paper also presents the implementation results of the portable ash meter, WALKER, and the on-line ash meter, RODOS, that is used underground in coal mines.

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. operates an ISASMELTTM furnace for the smelting of copper concentrate at the Miami Smelter in Claypool, Arizona. In May 2017, the furnace was restarted after incorporating newly designed copper cooling elements from just above the tap hole to the underside of the roof. The objective of the improved cooling design was to extend campaign life by eliminating existing failure mechanisms with the wall refractory. In addition to upgraded bathline coolers and complete coverage of the gas offtake transition, or ‘kettle’, with plate coolers, a novel arrangement of coolers was installed in the remaining freeboard area. The shell required significant cutting and re-stiffening, as well as extensive modification of the cooling water piping. Based on performance observed to date, it is expected that smelter throughput will be increased due to extended ISASMELTTM refractory campaign life.

The colony of French Guiana ( or Cayenne ) is administered by a governor , assisted by a privy council of five members . A council - general of 16 members is elected by French citizens resident in Guiana, and the colony is represented 3 in the French parliament by one deputy . The area is about 34,740 square miles . French Guiana is the largest gold producer of the French colonies , producing nearly $ 1,000,000 worth annually . Considerable prospecting has been done on the bauxite deposits , which are extensive . Copper , iron , lead , and 4 mercury deposits are also reported . In 1931 , 10,000 prospectors for gold were reported as working . The French Government is taking an active interest and has sent a committee of mining experts to explore the region ; no permits are to be issued to individual prospectors while the committee is in the colony . Plans for development of mining industry include consideration of 4,500 convicts and 2,500 natives already in the colony and available for labor .

Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC), an electric utility cooperative providing power to 51 Alaska villages, has made a concerted effort to install wind turbines in the villages they serve in an effort to mitigate the growing costs of electrical power generation. The subsurface soils in several of these villages consist of sands and silts with ground temperatures of between 30°F and 32°F. The presence of warm, degrading permafrost in three of the villages has required innovative foundation designs, including the use of helical piers and piles to support steel and concrete wind turbine foundations. The design of the deep foundations had to account for the effects of degrading permafrost likely resulting from observed climate change patterns. Uplift forces imposed on the foundations were approximately 100 kips per pile. Uplift pile load testing was conducted on the installed piers and piles in order to determine the actual working load that each pier or pile could sustain. In addition, pile driving analyzer testing was conducted on several piles installed in the permafrost and compared to pile load tests. Results indicated that the installed piers and piles achieved the necessary capacity with sufficient factors of safety. Thermosyphons were installed near the foundations in order to limit the effects of climate change on the permafrost. The two to four wind turbines in each of the three villages are currently operational. Refinement of the design based on the pile testing from the first village to the third has decreased the cost of the tower foundations and improved our understanding of designing for warm, degrading permafrost.

This experimental research was performed to determine rate - of - reaction constants on the MnO - C and Mn , C₂ - 3MnO systems at 1,100 ° , 1,150 ° , and 1,185 ° C. Reactions were conducted at atmospheric pressure under controlled flow of purified helium through the furnace chamber . The weight - loss method defined reduction percentages , and reaction products were identified by X- ray methods . The system Mn0 - C followed a linear reaction rate , and experimental results produced an apparent activation energy of 55.8 kcal per mole of Mn0 . The system Mn, C - 3Mn0 followed a parabolic rate of reaction law and yielded an apparent activation energy of 114.4 kcal per mole for the reaction .

Coal conversion to electricity or to substitute natural gas requires a significant quantity of natural and human resources including, in addition to the coal resource base, land, water and the construction and operating labor force. Each method of coal conversion has its advantages and disadvantages relative to conversion efficiency, preferred method of resultant energy transportation, resources consumed, and impact on the environment. Regulations which have been passed in recent years to maintain or restore the pre-project environment can add significantly to the capital and operating costs of both a conversion facility and its associated mine.

A aglomeração de minério de ferro para formação de pelotas é um processo dinâmico e seu controle é complexo. No controle manual o operador local é responsável pelos ajustes no processo e o tempo e a proporção de suas atuações dependem da percepção de cada um. Logo, o controle manual do processo é feito de forma individual e não padronizada e frequentemente não atende satisfatoriamente o controle da taxa de crescimento da pelota crua. Este artigo apresenta uma alternativa de controle automatizada, padronizada e otimizada da taxa de crescimento da pelota crua nos discos de pelotização. O “Sistema de Controle Avançado de Processo”, denominado SCAP, consiste em um controle multivariável baseado em ferramentas de controle convencionais e lógica nebulosa, que simula o pensamento humano nas tomadas decisão. As regras foram construídas e fundamentadas em conhecimentos previamente adquiridos por especialistas do processo. Verificou-se após a implantação um aumento do desempenho do processo produtivo. No âmbito das melhorias, destacam-se: redução de pelotas fora da especificação (granulometria), redução do consumo de insumos (agentes aglomerantes, gás natural, entre outros), melhoria na qualidade do produto final e aumento da produtividade.

Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold Montana Tunnels Mine was initiated in late June, 1991 with the commissioning of a coarse gold scalping circuit that processes a small portion of the ball mill circulating load. The primary objective for the circuit was to reduce the risk of gold particles advancing to flotation that are too coarse to float. The secondary objective was to enhance overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces in a cost effective manner. The gravity circuit has proven itself to be a major success. The above mentioned goals have been achieved, and they have been maintained at record throughput rates that are 30% higher than when the circuit was commissioned. A number of modifications and improvements were made over the last three years which allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage, these are discussed in detail in the body of this paper. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project which will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while reducing the overall unit costs of production significantly. This paper will review historical gravity circuit performance, improvements, and the current relocation and expansion project.

As fases microestruturais formadas em pelotas de minério de ferro queimadas relacionam-se às características mineralógicas do pellet feed utilizado e determinam propriedades como resistência física e comportamento metalúrgico do material. O presente trabalho objetiva detectar e quantificar fases microestruturais formadas em pelotas submetidas a diferentes níveis de sinterização, bem como sua relação com a resistência à compressão do aglomerado. Para isto foram interrompidas queimas em Pot Grate, gerando amostras de pelotas queimadas contendo fases características de diferentes temperaturas. Pelotas cruas foram submetidas à análise termogravimétrica para avaliação da perda de água dispersa entre os grãos do minério e da água combinada com o ferro em forma de partículas hidratadas.

Morphometric examination of lung alterations following exposure to toxic and pathogenic substances is invaluable in detecting subtle changes which might otherwise be overlooked. Results, from evaluation of initial structural alterations, support and guide subsequent nonmorphological techniques and, when coupled appropriately, can lead to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of a disease. Morphometry is a technique which can be used to determine, quantitatively, the site, extent, development, and progression of a disease state. Determination of the extent of tissue and cellular involvement in the response to inhalation of silica has been performed in order to gain a better understanding of the development of fibrosis following inhalation of this toxicant. In addition, since silica has been postulated as one of the important pathogenic minerals in coal mine dust' it is important to understand the lung tissue response to silica prior to evaluating the effects of inhaled coal mine dusts. Male Syrian golden hamsters were placed in Hazelton 1000 inhalation chambers and were exposed to either filtered air (controls, n = 24) or filtered air plus 30 mg!m3 silica (Min-U-Si110,95%ofparticles < 5 um,n =24)for16hours per day, five days per week, for two weeks. Animals were returned to the animal quarters prior to subsequent tissue processing at 1, 4, and 12 weeks following exposure. This schedule was designed to allow time for the development of fibrosis. Lungs were fixed by intratracheal perfusion of ½ strength Karnovsky's fixative at a pressure of 20 cm H20 and tissues were taken for embedment and analysis at the light level. Determination of site, extent, and development of alterations was performed using a multitiered approach. Changes in large structures (airways, blood vessels) was determined prior to evaluation of changes at the septal tissue level. Data will be presented outlining the progression of changes. Results indicate the usefulness of morphometric analysis of lungs following inhalation of toxic substances in quantitatively defining the structural alterations.

Polymer matrix composites have been applied in components such as helmets and shielding for which toughness is a major requirement. Natural fiber presents interfacial characteristics with polymeric matrices that favor a high impact energy absorption by the composite structure. The objective of this work was then to assess the Izod impact resistance of polymeric composites reinforced with different amounts, up to 30% in volume, of a promising high strength natural fiber from the Amazon region known as curaua. The results showed a remarkable increase in the notch toughness with the amount of incorporated curaua fibers. This can be attributed to a preferential debonding of the fiber/matrix interface, which contributes to an elevated absorbed energy.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is an analysis of underground coal mine fire incidents occurring in the United States during the 15years from 1978 through 1992. The fire data used in this analysis were obtained from U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration mine fire investigation reports. Fires were analyzed by year, State, coalbed thickness, mine size, mining method, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment involved, detection method, time of day, time of year, number of injuries and fatalities, method of extinguishment, and evacuation measures taken. In all, 164 fires are included in this report, or an average of 10.8 fires per year. The most fires occurred in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, respectively. However, the fire incidence rates for these States, expressed as the number of fires per million tons of coal mined, were the lowest, second lowest, and fourth lowest of all underground coal producing States. The most common ignition source was electricity; the most common burning substance was coal; the most frequent fire location was the belt entry; the most common equipment involved in fires was the conveyor belt; and the most common extinguishing agent was water.

Photovoltaic (PV) modules are becoming an ever increasingly larger part of our energy portfolio. As more and more PV modules are installed and come on-line, management of end-of-life (EOL) modules becomes an important issue. Currently, management of overburden EOL PV modules is not an issue, but is anticipated to be by 2030. Recovery and recycling of valuable metals in PV modules presents several environmental and economic advantages. In this brief review, we will describe processes for refurbishing and recycling of PV silicon. These processes involve some combination of mechanical, thermal, and chemical processing, all of which all have their oPV) modules have become wn respective challenges. Also, projections of PV module material streams are also highlighted.

Ice frozen from a dilute chemical solution is mechanically weaker than ice frozen from pure water. This phenomenon is the basis of a practical method for reducing the strength of a mass of frozen coal. If a chemical additive is applied to moist coal, prior to its shipment during freezing weather, the resulting frozen coal can be more easily broken than in the absence of the chemical additive. This greatly expedites the unloading and handling of coal during winter. There has been considerable research into the nature and mechanical strength of ice frozen from various solutions. The literature relating to this process has been reviewed as has the literature relating to the chemical treatment of coal and mineral particulates. Some important articles are discussed and speculations are made about the nature of the ice-weakening process. A laboratory evaluation of the effects of chemical additives on the mechanical strength of ice and frozen coal has been made. An apparatus designed for this purpose is described, and some results obtained with it are discussed.

The information was obtained mainly for use in interpreting and evaluating results of number-contentration and particle-size, determinations on, samples of unhygienic particulate matter collected from industrial atmospheres and in developing better methods for determinations nations.Some speculation and even controversy have been published on the limit of visibility of the widely used microscopic system (16-mm., 0.25-or 0.3-N.A. objective, and axial light-field illumination) used in counting the dust in the liquid medium from impinger, 4/ 5/ filter-paper, 6/ and other samples, but little or no quantitative data have been published on the limits of visibility of this or other microscopic' system.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe interest, encouragement, and assistance received from H. "The principal role of the geologist is to recognize the existence of phenomena before trying to explain them" - B.M. Keilau, 1825; A. Holmes, 1965 Some important groups of mineral deposits in the layered rocks of orogenic belts or greenstone belts occur in horizons characterized by the presence of exceptional amounts of silica, iron and carbon, with more or less significant amounts of manganese. Generally, the rocks involved are well banded. In practice, these five physical features - four compositional and one geometric - are found with many lithological guises. Iron formation, in the full, modern sense of the term (James, 1954), quartzite, ferruginous quartzite, chert, jasper, "tetsusekiei" (Horikoshi, 1969), tuffaceous jasper ("purple porphyry" - Anderson and Creasey, 1958, p. 36), ferruginous or graphitic shale, argillite, slate or schist, and hematitic tuff are but a few of the more familiar of the names that have been assigned to these rocks. Widely acknowledged and well-documented examples of metallic deposits found in such sediments include concentrations of iron and manganese and stratabound, polymetallic, massive pyritic sulfides. Less familiar examples include occurrences of asbestos (Miles, 1953; and Coetzee, et al., 1976), antimony (Coetzee, 1976), and perhaps stratabound deposits of Au-Cu-U-W-etc., such as Aitik in Sweden (Mining Magazine, 1975; and Nilsson, 1979) and Olympic Dam in South Australia (Roberts and Hudson, 1983). The case of gold is intriguing. An association between gold and iron formation has been identified at several famous deposits and districts, such as Yellowknife, N.W.T. (Morton, 1979), Homestake, S. Dak. (Sawkins and Rye, 1974), Vubachikwe, Zimbabwe (Fripp, 1976) and the Barberton district, R.S.A. (Hammerbeck, 1976). Yet a critical reading reveals the existence of many other hitherto unsuspected examples. The purpose of this note is to draw attention to that omission and the apparent explanation for it. It is not hard to detect the two most probable reasons for the discrepancy between reality and the record.Most occurrences of gold are associated, not with the familiar banded iron formation or interbedded magnetite and chert (technically, the magnetite-banded variety of the oxide facies), but with the enigmatic carbonate, sulfide and silicate facies of iron formation and/or with rocks evidently related to iron formation. All too commonly, the unfamiliar facies of iron formation have been identified by field and mine geologists and not a few researchers as products of regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, as mafic igneous rocks, or as conventional sediments, ie., without regard to their intrinsically ferruginous nature. The justification for these two complementary assertions is largely to be found in the recognition of a characteristic suite of metals and minerals in gold deposits known to be associated with iron formations. Although, from a geological standpoint, a lithological association is more important than a mineralogical assemblage, the latter is the more likely of the two to be diagnostic. This arises from the different natures of mineral and rock classifications, The identification of a mineral or an element is a matter of fact. Owing to the genetic component inseparable from petrographic nomenclature, viz., "igneous": a rock (believed to have been) derived from a melt, the identification of rocks depends on inferences or conclusions about their mode of formation - conclusions that are commonly debatable and, all too often, involve subjective judgements. This is especially prone to be true, if - as at many of the gold occurrences in question - the host rocks have been metamorphosed and/or "altered". In the notes that follow greater weight has accordingly been assigned to elemental and mineralogical than to host rock composition. In other words, if, in a given gold occurrence, the suite of metals and minerals present conforms to the standards of the subject class, whereas the names assigned to host rocks do not, the latter will be viewed as suspect.

The Westerschelde Tunnel is located in the south of the Netherlands and links the two parts of the Provinces of Zeeland, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Zuid-Beveland, which are separated by the Westerschelde. Road traf?c has up till now taken the detour via Belgium or crossed by ferry. This unsatisfactory transport link signifies major economic disadvantages above all for Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The first fixed link for road traffic between the communities of Terneuzen and Borsele are to be created by means of the two 6.6 km long tunnel tubes down to 65 m below sea level.

"Mine hoisting machinery, of which wire rope is an essential part, is developing, in Canada as well as in other parts of the North American continent, into highly sophisticated equipment. Heavier payloads are now required to be raised from steadily increasing depths at higher rates of speed and production. These hoisting conditions have, of necessity, brought about a major change in the production of steel roping wires and the wire ropes manufactured from them.Operators and designers of hoisting equipment are requesting a very much more efficient ratio of strength to weight in hoisting ropes, so that heavier loads may be raised from greater depths by ropes which will provide a predeterminable life span on which the operator may depend.The cost of wire rope to the operator is very low indeed, usually less than $0.01 per ton of payload, but the cost of unexpected shutdown periods, due to rope maintenance or change, can be extremely high -particularly in operations where a continuously high rate of production is an absolute necessity. Mine hoist ropes with a higher strength to weight ratio are now being made and used in some areas of Canadian mining, and a general understanding of the performance we may expect from them is required."
