THE more familiar compositions of iron-carbon-chromium1 and the iron-carbon-tungsten2 systems have been investigated with a degree of thoroughness which has permitted the construction of their three-dimensional equilibrium diagrams; and it is probable that these equilibrium diagrams are sufficiently accurate for the present metallographic needs. Strangely enough, in spite of their importance, the alloys of iron, carbon and manganese apparently have not been investigated in the same systematic manner, and so far as is known, no three-component equilibrium diagram for this system is available. Even iron-carbon-nickel alloys3 have been studied rather more thoroughly; for these the solidus and liquidus surfaces have already been determined, but the solid transformations in this, as in the manganese system, have not been reported systematically. The present paper deals with the constitution at equilibrium of a series of 36 iron-carbon-manganese alloys of commercial purity limited by 1.5 per cent carbon and 15 per cent manganese, a range of compositions including most of the manganese steels. The temperature range of melting has not been determined, nor has the high-temperature (delta iron) ferrite equilibrium been included in the study, it being considered that the more important characteristics of the manganese steels are their ordinary transformations in the solid state. The delta iron region is almost certain to be a small tetrahedron not very different in magnitude or contour from that in the iron-carbon-nickel diagram. It is probably true

The purpose of this investigation was to find whether the moduli of elasticity obtained were the same for the following methods : ( 1 ) Deformation of a borehole in a prism subjected to uniaxial stress ; ( 2 ) deflection of a thin beam of uniform cross section uniformly loaded ; ( 3 ) sonic - pulse velocity measurements , and ( 4 ) strain measurements on a prism under uniaxial stress . The rock tested was chosen for its good elastic behavior and relatively good homogeneity and elastic isotropism . The same rock was used for all methods . Results indicate that for given environmental and stress conditions the moduli obtained by each of the four methods check one another within the limits of experimental error and that the differences introduced which are characteristic for each method are smaller than physical variations within the rock tested .

The concept of mine safety is highlighted in the literature of sustainable mining but not extensively discussed. This study analyzes various aspects of underground and surface mine safety and emphasizes its importance in the context of sustainable mining. More specifically, this research attempts to find the relationship between mine hazards and demographic characteristics, examine and compare the perceptual difference among miners, and determine the impact of mine hazards on workplace safety and safety climate. Descriptive analysis, chi-square test, independent samples t test, and linear regression modeling were conducted to achieve study objectives. Results confirmed that mine hazards were significantly associated with age and experience. Miners perceived lower levels of management safety practices, followed by supervisor safety, coworker safety, and job safety. The analysis showed that underground miners reported lower safety scores than surface miners. There was a statistically significant difference between miners’ perception of safety climate (p < 0.05). The results showed that the higher prevalence of mine hazards predicts poor workplace safety and a low safety climate. The regression models revealed that mine hazards have a significant effect on workplace safety (p < 0.05) and safety climate (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the distinctive model of mine safety presented here contributes to the monitoring and design of comprehensive safety interventions and helps to better understand how certain factors interact on multiple levels to influence the overall safety of the industry. In this study, some suggestions are put forward to provide directions to develop a sustainable mine safety system.

M J Martinson (Fellow) There is everywhere a lamentable dearth of quantitative information on occupational factors affecting the health and safety of mineworkers, and as the authors point out in their introduction underground lighting is one of the factors which has received little attention in South Africa prior to this welcome paper. Since the authors are to some extent pioneering, it is perhaps inevitable that the paper should raise more questions than it answers, but nevertheless it provides a provisional yardstick against which the need for, and success of, remedial action may be judged. Before commenting in detail on a few aspects of the paper it may be worthwhile to summarize the statutory provisions relating to underground lighting, contained in Chapter 15 of the Regulations promulgated in terms of the Mines and Works Act 27 of 1956. Chapter 15 is entitled `Lighting, Safety Lamps and Contraband&apos;, but in the context of the present paper only four simple regulations need be noted: firstly, no person shall work or travel in an unilluminated part of a mine unless he carries a light ; secondly, adequate stationary lights shall be provided at stations and certain other localities in shafts, winzes and places used for winding; thirdly, mechanically propelled conveyances shall be provided with an effective bright light shining in the direction of travel; and fourthly, moving machinery to which personnel have access shall be illuminated so as to be clearly visible. In all four regulations the standard of lighting to be provided is wholly subjective, and under these circumstances the wide inter- and intra-mine variations in light intensity disclosed by the study are hardly unexpected. Nevertheless the data presented in the authors&apos; Table I raise three points (1) Is there any evidence that the 19 mines visited during the survey are representative of the 45-50 large gold mines in South Africa, or that the shafts selected are representative of the respective mines? Mine managers would scarcely be human were they not to offer better lit working places for the survey; perhaps the use of a scaling factor (e.g. tonnes or transit mineworkers per shift, kilowatts, etc.) for each working place might have helped to put the figures in perspective. (2) Looking at two of the more numerous - and probably important - of the ten working places included in the survey, i.e. stations and tips, one is struck by the marked. skewness of both intensity distributions (with higher frequencies at the lower intensities) and the abrupt cut-off in both cases just short of pitch darkness. Thus, of the 45 meaned readings recorded at 26 tips no less than 19 fall in the lowest range of 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2, with but one tip in total darkness; of 46 readings on 26 stations, 7 fall in the lowest range and none is in total dark-&apos;1 ness. Although a light with an intensity in the range 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2 may satisfy the regulations, it is certainly arguable that in some situations it may be safer to have no light at all. (3) In view of the skewness referred to above, one wonders how meaningful are the `total average light intensities for (the gold mining) industry&apos; quoted in Table I, which the authors compare with illumina¬tion levels found in other countries. Looking at tips again, one notes that 34 out of 45 meaned intensity readings fall below the `total average&apos; for tips, and only 10 exceed it. From this it may be concluded that a few well-lit working places included in a `total average&apos; may conceal a plethora in Stygian gloom. In their discussion the authors make fleeting reference to the effect of underground lighting on productivity and accident rates, without however quoting any South African experience in this regard. Intuitively it seems highly likely that better lighting (in the widest sense) would improve productivity and reduce accidents, and of course it is in these areas that the mining industry might seek economic justification for providing better lighting. It is all the more regrettable therefore that these factors were not studied simultaneously with the present investigation, especially at the Psychological Division of the Human Sciences Laboratory has recently published a study on underground accidents in the gold mining industry without making any reference whatsoever to lighting as a causal factor. In the event neither of the two studies enables us to make an economic appreciation of the situation, and this seems to be a classic example of a situation where some dovetailing of research effort would have greatly increased the useful return. On the effect of lighting on accidents, it may be noted that in 1939 Mickel presented some very interesting statistics to the Mine Managers Association of the Transvaal2, on the improvement in accident rates which followed the random issue of electric cap lamps to native mineworkers in the Hercules Section of E.R.P.M. the previous year. Based on a 12 month trial period in which 250 000 shifts were worked with carbide lamps and (contemporaneously) 307 000 shifts with cap lamps, the incidence of major accidents (at least one day in hospital among men using carbide lamps was 1,15 accidents per 1000 shifts, while the incidence of minor accidents (requiring dressing only) was 11,52 per 1 000 shifts. The corresponding figures for men using cap lamps were 0,79 and 7,31 accidents per 1 000 shifts respectively, representing a reduction of over 30 per cent in both major and minor accidents. While these figures are obviously dated - only men using cap lamps were issued with hard hats, for instance - they do indicate a need for similar research today.

The advantage of using ammonium phosphate salt as flux is the selective precipitation of chromium(III) compounds, which are considered nontoxic and environmentally friendly. The technique in this paper is determined to have potential to be applied in the metallurgical industry, where it can be used in the beneficiation of chromite mineral ores. The higher chromium contents of chromite ores often require furnaces to run at higher temperatures of above 1,300 °C, which can cause shutdown of the ore processing plant and accumulation of the sticky chrome compounds — including toxic chromium(VI) waste — which are generated as byproducts. The other advantage of this technique is its low to moderate energy consumption compared to existing techniques.

The paper begins with a brief history of the nickel industry in Finland, and then deals with the introduction of the flash smelting process. The main part of the paper is devoted to nickel refining, which is studied under four main headings -grinding, leaching, electrolyte precipitation, and nickel electrowinning. Flowsheets are illustrated, and the equipment used is described. Analyses of the material in the various stages, from concentrate to high-grade nickel matte, are also presented. N ICKEL made its appearance in the Finnish mining industry forty years ago, when a nickel deposit was discovered at Petsamo in Lapland. Mond Nickel Co. received the concession for this deposit from the Finnish Government, and the Petsamon Nikkeli Company constructed a mine and a nickel smelter (1), the completion of which was prevented by the 1939 Winter War. The mine and smelter were, however, completed soon afterwards in spite of World War II,

"INTRODUCTION Exploration of the Iron Mountain and Bader iron-ore deposits in Llano County and the Gamble deposit in Mason County, Texas, was begun by the Bureau of Mines in January and completed in May 1944. The deposits had been examined by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau, in November 1942. Detailed geophysical studies by the gravity method as well as with a dip needle were made by the Bureau of Economic Geology 3/ of the University of Texas and the Federal Geological Survey. 4/ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn the program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy., It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploration project as soon as practicable after its completion. In the earliest days of mining coal the obvious method was by bord and pillar working. Longwall in Britain developed from this as an expedient to overcome bottlenecks arising from ? 1) increasing depth of seams causing roof control difficulties; and 2) ventilation problems. This system became almost universal particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. Coal getting in these faces was usually by pick and shovel, filled into small waggons of up to 15 cwts capacity. These waggons ran on rails laid alongside the coal face and were often taken away from the face to the main haulage roads by horses. The roof was supported by rigid props and the wastes were normally controlled by strip packing. This system of mining was very flexible and worked well down to sections of about 3&apos;6"

The Bureau of Mines has developed a computer program for use in solving nonlinear regression problems. The program is written in a general form so that, regardless of the functional relationship, the unknown parameters may be evaluated by either the Gauss-Newton or the Newton-Raphson methods of iteration. Variances and covariances of the parameters, as derived from the law for the propagation of errors, are also determined.

In recent years recycling of household batteries has received increasing attention, primarily for environmental reasons. This article reviews the major battery types and some of the technologies available to recycle them. It also discusses issues such as collection and sorting which are related to battery recycling in the United States. Finally, results from research being conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the reclamation of nickel-metal hydride, alkaline, and zinc-carbon batteries are presented.

As part of a continuing program of evaluating the Nation&apos;s crude-oil resource, this report presents information pertaining to resource, primary reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for 3,209 selected reservoirs contained in 24 oil-producing States, as of January 1, 1968. To that date the selected reservoirs had not been subjected to pressure-maintenance or secondary-recovery operations. These reservoirs also met the following parameters: (1) a minimum of five oil-producing wells on January 1, 1968, (2) a minimum of 50 acres areal extent, (3) a minimum of 50,000 bbl of oil ultimate primary recovery, and (4) the principal reservoir energy was other than active water encroachment. The selected 3,209 reservoirs produced 527 million bbl of oil in 1967, about 17 pct of U.S, total production. Primary oil reserve was 4,983 million stb; in addition, there was 6,043 million stb of potential water- flood oil reserve. Oil resource in the selected reservoirs was 59,547 million stb. A brief history and outlook of waterflooding are presented for each State. Depth and producing rate statistics and geologic distributions of production, resource, reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for the selected reservoirs are presented by States in the appendix. Also included in the appendix are description, history, and technique modifications of waterflooding, and a preliminary cost estimate of a closed-system water-injection project.

"The otherwise waste heat in many water streams in the mining industry can be used to provide space heating of adjacent infrastructure including laboratories, workshops, and offices. This can be achieved by using heat pump systems, which can work as a replacement or in conjunction with existing space heating. In the example investigated—process cooling streams at an ore smelter—the analysis provided illustrates that annual heating costs can be 19% lower and a simultaneous 62% reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved.RÉSUMÉ Dans l’industrie minière, la chaleur qui serait normalement perdue des circuits d’eau pourrait servir à chauffer des structures adjacentes incluant les laboratoires, les ateliers et les bureaux. The Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential availability of chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos from 42 properties in market economy countries. This resulted in the development of tonnage-cost relationships indicating the quantity of grades 3 through 7 asbestos at various average total costs of production at 0% and 15% rates of return on invested capital. The availability of grades 2 and 8 was also evaluated, but since each is produced at only one property, no analytical results were given. Total demonstrated recoverable chrysotile fiber potentially available of grades 3 through 7 from the 42 properties evaluated follow: 1.59 million t, 21.00 million t, 16.74 million t, 15.54 million t, and 19.27 million t, respectively. The total amount of crocidolite is 1.69 million t. Owing to the good potential for discovery and development of new deposits, long- term availability of fiber of all three types is not in jeopardy. However, many of the crocidolite properties evaluated in the northern Cape crocidolite field of South Africa have relatively small demonstrated resources, and new deposits will have to be exploited by the late 1990&apos;s to sustain projected levels of production.

Sulphur is always present in mineral coal of every variety. In the oxidized state it may exist as sulphuric acid in combination with a base. In the unoxidized state it exists in combination with iron as bisulphide of iron. It is also supposed by some chemists to exist in unknown combinations with the organic elements of the coal. This supposition requires the demonstration as a fact that certain coals yield more sulphur than what may exist in a free state, or what belongs to recognized combinations, not only with the accompanying iron but with other inorganic bases abundantly occurring in coals, but which unfortunately are very rarely estimated. This practically as well as theoretically important question it is at present impossible to decide, simply for want of available thorough ultimate coal analyses including the ash. Such analyses, at the best imperfect, are luborious and intricate, and therefore seldom made, the much simpler proximate analyses, so-called, being resorted to by most chemists for technical purposes, and commonly substituted for more scientific work even in the laboratories of government surveys. And it is unfortunate enough that few ultimate analyses are extended to the composition of the ash, much less to its relation to the original constitution of the coal. Sulphur chiefly occurs in most coals in the form of yellow pyrites (pyrite) and white pyrites (marcasite), both minerals, characterized by differences in crystalline form and in physical properties as well as in color, but having the same chemical composition (FeS2). No coal is entirely free from one or both of these dimorphous forms of bisulphide of iron. It may be disseminated through the mass so as to be invisible, in plates or scales between the laminæ of the coal, or in conspicuous segregations or nodules, sometimes of considerable dimensions. Coals greatly differ as to the proportion of sulphur which they contain. They also differ as to the relative proportion in which its several forms of combination occur. Such qualitative and qnantitative disparities arc scarcely, if at all, more marked in separate coal seams of a uniform type than in different parts of one and the same coal seam, whether it be considered locally as constituted of several

The Bureau of Mines performed a fragmentation experiment in cooperation with Duval Corporation in a porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit near the Sierrita pit south of Tucson, Ariz. This experiment evaluated the fragmentation created in a 10-hole test blast having blasthole spacings of 25, 20, and 15 feet. The 10 blastholes were 9 inches in diameter and contained a total of 17,400 pounds of aluminized slurry blasting agent in 50-foot columns with 60 feet of stemming. Diamond drill core examination was the primary method used to determine the condition of the rock before and after blasting. These core examinations included study of length recovery, rock quality designation (RQD), weight recovery, and size distribution. Topographic surveys were used to measure the rock swell produced by the blast and a fragment size distribution was obtained for the broken material on the surface. Fragmentation to depths of 110 feet was excellent from the 15-to 20-foot blasthole spacing patterns. Good breakage was also produced by the 25-foot pattern although the effects of the blast were not so obvious. In situ leaching tests were not conducted. However, based only on size consideration, all three blasting patterns produced adequate breakage for successful leaching.

"INTRODUCTION The Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, cooperating with the University of Alabama and Alabama coal producers, has made a series of investigations of the washability of coal from commercially important bens of Alabama. The results of 13 investigations pertaining to the Mary Lee, Clark, Black Creek, Jefferson, Pratt, Corona, Carter Brookwood, Blue Creek, Thompson, and Woodstock beds have been published. 4/ This report, the fourteenth of the series, deals with run-of-mine coal from the Henry Ellen bed at the Acmar No. 5 mine of the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co.The Acmar mine is 1/2 mile west of Acmar, Saint Clair County, in the northern part of the Cahaba field. Present production at the mine is about 800 tons per day, all of which, accept the lump coal, is treated in jigs. The washability data were obtained by means of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests. There are included, also, tests showing the extent of liberation of impurities by recrushing the coarser sizes of coal from the top bench and tests showing the flakiness in selected sizes.SAMPLING AT THE MINEThe Henry Ellen bed at Acmar consists of two benches separated by a shale parting. At the point of sampling the top bench was 6 feet 3 inches thick and contained a 1-inch and a 1 1/2-inch band of bone. The bottom bench was 5 feet thick and was separated from the top bench by 20 inches of shale. In taking the samples for the washability study the working face was squared up, and a representative 2-ton section was out from each bench. The shale parting was discarded, according to usual mining practice."

The increasing demands for petroleum and its products and the steadily increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil fields are factors that emphasize the importance of increasing the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Water flooding is a valuable conservation measure, not only preventing premature abandonment of stripper leases but also reviving interest in many areas previously abandoned. The use of water flooding as a means for recovering additional oil from partly depleted oil-bearing formations was first tried in Oklahoma in 1931. Early water-flooding operations were confined to the area of shallow Bartlesville-sand formations in Nowata and Rogers Counties, where many of the projects were outstandingly successful. The results of these operations stimulated activities in other pools in Oklahoma, and by the end of 1949 water flooding had been tried in 25 of the 49 oil-producing counties in the State (fig. 1). Approximately 33 million barrels of oil, or 1,806 barrels per acre, had been recovered by December 31, 1949, from 18,221 productive acres included in the 162 active and abandoned projects in Oklahoma by injection of approximately 449 million barrels of water.

Introduction Agrico Mining Co.&apos;s Florida mining division has three surface mines and employs nearly 700 workers. The division produces some 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of phosphate rock annually. It is a good business. And Agrico has made it better by making it safer through a new approach to mine safety. In one year, Agrico - the second largest phosphate mining company in the US - recorded a stretch of one million manhours without an accident. That same year, the direct cost of accidents dropped to $9137 from a previous five-year average of about $50,000. Together with Don Roe, division manager of safety and security, Division General Manager Don Morrow made 1981 a watershed year for safety at Agrico. Morrow called on consultants from Safety Management Services of Du Pont&apos;s Specialty Services division to strengthen a safety program that was already better than average. From the late 1970s and into 1981, lost-workday cases (LWCs) were costing Agrico an estimated average of $22,000 each. And they were occurring with alarming frequency. In 1977, the company recorded six LWCs at an incidence rate of 0.64. This was followed by a jump to nine cases in 1978. In 1979, both occurrences and the rate increased - 10 LWCs at a 1.19 rate. The number of LWCs decreased to seven in 1980, with a rate of 0.71. Agrico instituted a far-reaching safety program in 1981, which began to take full effect in 1982. LWCs dropped from five in 1981, to three in 1982. And the direct cost plummeted from $110,346 to $28,828. In 1983, the mines recorded only one LWC. Its $9137 cost represented a reduction of $101,209 since the Safety Management Services of Du Pont had been called in. Through early 1984, the LWC incidence rate at the facility&apos;s three mines, phosphate drying plant, and transportation department was down to 0.26. This is 84% lower than the 1982 mining industry average, making it the safety leader among all Agrico companies, including its chemical plants. New Approach Agrico had the basics of a safety program in place when the Du Pont consultants arrived. With the rapid acceleration of the cost of shovel dippers and major standard shovel clipper rebuild components, maintenance management at Kennecott Copper Corp.&apos;s Bingham Canyon mine initiated a dipper maintenance and rebuild program. The program focused on extending the service life of the shovel dipper, reducing field labor in maintaining dippers, and lowering shovel dipper rebuild costs. While comprehensive evaluation of the program is still underway, preliminary benefits of the program indicate: •Reduced field ,gelding for shovel dipper field maintenance, •Fewer dipper rebuild units entering the shop, and •Reduced dipper rebuild costs per unit.

Tribo-electrostatic separation is a promising method for effectively utiliing low-grade magnesite resources by removing quartz and improving the grade of magnesite. To determine the chargeto- mass ratios of pure magnesite and quartz, a triboelectric measurement system was employed, and a laboratory tribo-electrostatic separation system was used to separate low-grade magnesite. The results showed that the maximum difference in charge-to-mass ratio between pure magnesite and quartz particles was observed after friction with polyvinyl chloride. The grade and recovery of magnesite increased with temperature and initially increased with increasing voltage, feed rate, and air flowrate before gradually decreasing. The optimal conditions resulted in a concentrate with 46.91% MgO content and 77.36% recovery, while the quartz content decreased from 7.02% to 1.95%. These experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of tribo-electrostatic separation in removing quartz and upgrading magnesite.
