It is proposed to give, first, a description of the works; second, a report of the first six months of the present blast; and third, such improvements as have been suggested by the practical working. The site selected for this furnace was, at the time of commencing work, October, 1872, entirely covered by the navigable waters of Lake Champlain. A coffer-dam was first built of cribs of round timber filled with stone, forming three sides, while the shore answered for the fourth. Considerable excavating was done with a steam-dredge, a hole being left for it to pass out. The opening was then built up, and the cribbing banked up with blue clay from the bottom of the lake, to render it water-tight and the dam pumped out; the remainder of the excavating being done by hand. All of the foundations, with the exception of the elevator-tower, and fifteen feet of the east side of hot blast, rest on the Potsdam sandstone, which forms the shore line, dipping into the lake at an angle of fifteen degrees. "The repacked mineral aggregates of good grade oil sands have permeabilities ranging between 15 darcys to 350 millidarcys. The variation is due to the silt contents of the aggregates. Few good grade oil sands contain as much as 30 per cent •silt, most of them contain less than 20 per cent, and a large proportion have less than 10 per cent.The permeabilities of repacked good grade oil sands (oil included) depend on the degree of liquid saturation. When saturation with oil plus water reaches between 80-90 per cent, permeability is reduced to zero. As total saturation decreases below 80 per cent, permeability increases ranidly. Permeabilities of between one and two darcys were observed for total saturations between 60-70 per cent.The mean value for 18 measurements of the permeabilities of ""undisturbed"" core samples of good grade oil sands was 50 millidarcys. This value is •probably too high. The mean value for 20 measurements on core samples of interbedded oil sand and shale was 100 millidarcys. The mean value for 11 measurements on shale was 10 millidarcys."

Owing to the selective oxidation and uneven combustion that occur on the surface of carbon anode, some carbon particles detach and form carbon residue, which is defined as spent anode slag (SAS). The highly graphitized and toxic impurities such as fluorite ( CaF2), corundum (α-Al2O3), and cryolite ( NaAl11O17) are crucial components of SAS resource but are difficult to separate from graphite. This study developed a method of using water-soluble (emulsified) kerosene to separate the carbon particles from the toxic impurities in the SAS resource. The flotation purification approach of utilizing conventional kerosene was experimentally investigated and compared with that of using water-soluble kerosene. The results showed that with the use of emulsified kerosene, the maximum combustible matter recovery of the carbon particles was 89.86% while that of using traditional kerosene was 80.30%. The emulsified kerosene was comprehensively examined by various instruments to clarify its adsorption mechanism on the carbon particle surfaces. Because of the superior dispersibility of emulsified kerosene, it effectively envelops carbon particles with a smooth surface, oxygen-containing functional groups, and hydrophilic C–F bonds, thereby increasing the surface hydrophobicity and flotation responses of targeted carbon particles.

The analyses herein were made by mass spectrometer and Frost helium apparatus. The most important helium resource discovery made during 1961 was the Table Mesa field in San Juan County, N. Mex. This field, Which has an estimated recoverable helium reserve of 850 million cubic feet, is now supplying gas containing approximately 5.4 percent helium to the Bureau of Mines Navajo Helium Plant at Shiprock, N. Mex.

Conditions in the oil and gas industry in Indiana were about the same in 1935 as in 1934. This is especially true of the old Trenton area and the Harrison County area where production was steady and almost no exploration and development took place. The past year has seen an increase in drilling activity and a decrease in oil and gas output in southwestern Indiana. In the state, 224 wells were completed in 1935, of which 48 were oil wells, 61 gas wells, and 115 dry holes. A few of these were old gas wells deepened to oil horizons. Twenty-six wells started during 1935 were not completed by Dec. 31. Approximately one-half the wells drilled were within proven areas. A relatively large number of wildcats, especially in Daviess, Pike and Gibson Counties, were in search of new gas supplies to supplant the diminishing resources in those counties. The decreased production of gas was due largely to the fact that existing supplies declined more rapidly than new fields could be brought on. The Alford field, in Pike County, which produced the bulk of the supply in 1934, was called on to do likewise in 1935, but was unable to respond sufficiently to keep up the yearly production for southwestern Indiana. During the last half of the year, the Oaktown field, Knox County, was connected with one of the principal pipe lines of the state, which helped to keep gas production above an unusual low. The decline in oil production was due almost entirely to proration during the first eight months of the year. The proration affected Daviess, Pike, Gibson, Sullivan and Vigo counties, which produce about three-fourths of the total for the state. After proration was lifted, the wells never quite reached the conditions existing before proration. The average daily production per well in Indiana is less than two barrels. The outstanding development in Indiana in 1935 was the drilling in the Oaktown field immediately before and after the laying of the 6-in. pipe line to the field. The mining district of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) in southeastern Brazil contributes to 70 per cent of the Brazilian iron ore production, which reached 370 Mt in 2010. Traditionally, four iron ore types were mined in the QF region:1. soft haematite,2. hard haematite,3. friable ‘itabirite’ (the Brazilian name for metamorphosed banded iron formation), and4. canga (an indurated iron-rich crust).With the exception of the hard haematite, these categories derive from supergene enrichment of the Paleoproterozoic Cauê Itabirite. High current iron ore demand means that the QF high grade supergene ores will be depleted in a few decades. Consequently, several mining projects are being developed to exploit unenriched, fresh itabirite. Among them, the Mineração Usiminas Serra Azul project in northwestern QF is one of the most advanced. Four major itabirite types occur in the QF region:1. siliceous (or standard),2. dolomitic,3. amphibolitic, and4. magnetitic.The dominant type in Serra Azul region is a fresh siliceous itabirite, composed essentially of haematite, martite and quartz that averages 36 per cent Fe (51.5 per cent Fe2O3) and 47 per cent SiO2. The second type, the magnetitic itabirite, consisting of magnetite, martite, gruneritecummingtonite, quartz, dolomite, stilpnomelane, and subordinate haematite, is typically a strongly magnetic greenish banded iron formation with the iron grade varying between 25 and 35 per cent. Chemically, it differs from the siliceous itabirite due to the relatively high CaO, MgO and, consequently, high LOI contents. Together with supergene ores, fresh itabirites have been included in the ore reserves of the Serra Azul project. We anticipate that all the four types of fresh itabirite will be incorporated as ore in the QF region, causing a huge increase on the iron ore resources of the district, and representing enormous environmental and technological challenges for the local iron ore industry.

Tar sand deposits in the. Stare of Utah contain more than 25 billion barrels of in-place bitumen, Although thirty times smaller than the well-known Athabasca tar sands, Utah tar sands do represent a significant domestic energy resource comparable to the national crude oil reserves (31.3 billion barrels), The term "tar sand" refers to a consolidated mixture of bitumen and sand, Based upon a detailed analysis of the physical and chemical properties of both the bitumen and the sand, a hot-water extraction process for Utah tar sands is currently being developed in our laboratories at the University of Utah. This process involves intense agitation of the tar sand in a hot caustic solution and subsequent separation of the bitumen by a modified froth flotation technique., Experimental results indicated that, for a given tar sand sample, percent solids and caustic concentration were the two most important variables controlling the performance of the digestion stage, These variables were identified by means of an experimental, factorial design, in which coefficients of separation greater than 0.90 were realized. Although preliminary in nature, the experimental evidence gathered in this investigation seems to indicate that a hot-water extraction process for Utah tar sands would allow for the efficient utilization of this important energy resource.

In high stress mining environments, production drill rigs are often employed for rapid drilling of boreholes for systematic cable bolting. One outcome of this drilling method is the need for larger boreholes than would normally be drilled using customised bolting machines, such as the Tamrock Cabolter. Past laboratory studies indicate that, under ideal grouting conditions, borehole diameter has little effect on the pull-out strength of cable bolts with high bulb densities. However, the sensitivity of pull-out strength to large boreholes and less ideal variations of grout strength have not been investigated. To explore these sensitivities, industry standard single embedment tests were conducted on large boreholes simulated using steel pipes. Four borehole diameters were tested, namely: 42 mm, 52 mm, 81 mm and 106 mm. In each case the grout water to cement ratio was varied from 0.35 to 0.45 and two cable bolt bulb spacings were considered, namely: one and three bulbs per metre. The results indicate that, across the range of parameters tested, variations in peak axial load at failure corresponding to changes in hole diameter were statistically insignificant.

Telerobotics focused on mining is currently being introduced into production systems around the world. Mining companies in Canada, Sweden, South Africa and Australia have tended to lead the international charge to this form of technology for mining. While this introduction is taking place a few basic questions have yet to be answered. How many machines can a single operator run? How many types of machines can a single operator run? A new Canadian Research Chair in Robotics and Mine Automation has been established at Laurentian University. This chair will investigate these questions and many more through a series of experiments in a newly established telerobotics laboratory that connects Laurentian teleoperation workstations to model mining machines at Cambrian college?s eDome. The laboratory will support many experiments allowing researchers to physically run multiple robot scenarios differing the numbers and types of machines at one/quarter scale. Further experiments are being designed to investigate the potential for managing time delays in telerobotics. This paper describes the laboratory, experiments and some preliminary results.

A 5;6 MVA pyrometallurgical demonstration-scale pilot plant was commissioned at Mintek, South Africa, in 1994, using lead blast-furnace slag and coke as raw materials. The plant included a.d.c. power. supply, two plasma-arc furnaces' and an ISP lead-splash condenser. Slags containing typically 12 per cent zinc oxide and 3 per cent lead oxide are produced as a waste during the smelting of lead in a blast furnace. These slags are a potential: resource for the recovery of lead and zinc. During 1994, about 600 t of lead blast-furnace, slag was proceced through the pilot plant using the Enviroplas process. Zinc and lead oxides were reduced to their respective metals, volatilized, and collected in an. ISP lead splash condenser. Prime Western grade zinc and slags disposable in accordance with current US legislation, were produced. Zinc condensation efficiencies of about 80 per cent were achieved.

Este trabalho apresenta uma nova abordagem sobre o emprego sequencial dos tratamentos termoquímicos de superfície utilizando a tecnologia de plasma. No trabalho são avaliados tratamentos de superfície, individuais e sequenciais, de nitretação/cementação. Os tratamentos foram realizados no campo ferrítico com o objetivo de manter as tolerâncias dimensionais. Amostras de aços AISI 1005 foram tratadas em descarga luminescente anormal sendo realizados ciclos únicos de cementação e nitretação e também ciclos conjuntos de nitretação + cementação. Todos os tratamentos foram realizados a 500°C com um tempo de patamar de 3 horas para cada tratamento. A composição da mistura gasosa variou de acordo com o tratamento: nitretação - 5%N2 + 95%H2 ou 3%N2 + 97%H2; cementação - 5%CH4 + 95%H2. A caracterização microestrutural das amostras foi realizada por microscopia óptica e MEV além de difração de raios-X. Análises de microdureza também foram realizadas. As analises de raios-X mostraram que ocorre a estabilização de uma camada de cementita nos tratamentos de cementação. Nas amostras nitretadas em atmosfera contendo 5% de N2 foi observada a presença de camada de compostos. Já em atmosferas contendo 3% de N2 não houve a formação da camada de compostos. A maior profundidade de endurecimento foi obtida para a amostra nitretada + cementada.

VAGUE rumors and stories have been heard, from time to time, about the diamond and gold deposits of southern Venezuela. It is perhaps appropriate, at this time of revived interest in gold mining, to publish a few facts in regard to this country, which has been undergoing exploration since the fifteenth century. Gold and diamonds are found principally in the State of Bolivar which lies in southeastern Venezuela and is bounded by British Guiana on the east and Brazil on the south (see Fig. 1). The famous Mt. Roraima is situated at a point where these three countries meet in a common point (see Fig. 2). Some gold is also found in the southern part of the territory of Amacuro. Good oil prospects exist in the northern part of this same territory. Diamonds are found on the Caroni river from Rio Paragua to the village of Guri. Design plans and detailed cost estimates of mining and treating ore from Maggie Canyon deposit by two alternative methods which can be used in the event of a sudden need to exploit this resource are given . Lower costs are estimated for the operation employing oil - emulsion flotation . The total capital investment required for this operation is estimated at $ 11,750,000 . Assuming an 85 percent recovery in mining , 55.6 pct of the manganese in the ore reserve would report in 153,333 tons of ferromanganese containing 75 pct manganese . The production cost for the 5 - year operation would be about $ 245 per ton of ferromanganese . The total annual operating cost would be approximately $ 7.5 million , distributed , in pct , as follows : Mining 11.9 , milling 24.4 , sintering 9.9 , smelting 47.2 , hauling ore and sinter 2.8 , and general offices 3.8 . Recovery and costs are both higher for the operation employing dithionate leaching . In this operation the required investment is about $ 17,220,000 . Manganese recovery would be 67.6 pct in 186,160 tons of ferromanganese . Production cost would be about $ 284 per ton of ferromanganese . The total annual operating cost would be about $ 10,575,000 , distributed , in pct , as follows : Mining 8.4 , milling 44.4 , sintering 7.4 , smelting 34.7 , hauling ore and sinter 1.3 , and general offices 3.8 . Potential process modifications might reduce the operating cost of the first operation by as much as 7 pct and that of the second operation by as much as 9.5 pct , but exploitation of the deposit by the techniques studied is not economical today .

The per capita energy consumption in India is 510kgoe/year, the global average being nearly 1818kgoe/year. Correspondingly low is the per capita CO2 emission at 1.25t against the world average of 4.39t.65-70%, at times more, of India?s power generation from about 190,000 MW installed capacity, is however coal fired.India therefore has to secure diversified sources of energy and solar power is increasingly being looked as the real alternative to the existing over dependence on coal. To ensure sustainable solar power it is essential to secure its raw material base that is ?silica?, hitherto considered as ?minor minerals?. That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. Following extensive R&D efforts, Hydro Magnesium has launched a new alloy series with remarkable combinations of properties. The AE alloy family is based on additions of aluminium and rare earth elements to control mechanical properties, including elevated temperature creep strength. By combining these alloying elements with manganese additions, high purity alloys with outstanding corrosion performance are defined. A basic philosophy behind the developments has been to simultaneously approach all the critical issues related to developing a commercial material. Apart from the obvious requirements for material properties, the critical issues relate to die casting performance, as well as alloy production, recycling and environmental compatibility. Some of the important elements related to alloy production and recycling are addressed in the present paper.
