'Gold-telluride mineralization was deposited in quartz veins which cut a Late Cretaceous tonalite pluton emplaced near the southern margin of the Peninsular tectono-stratigraphic terrane in south-central Alaska. The gold-bearing veins formed shortly after the development of a widespread Cu-Mo sheeted quartz vein system. Early mineral assemblages consist of quartz, white mica, pyrite, and arsenopyrite (wall rock only). Subsequently, pyrite. sphalerite, chalcopyrite, zoned tetrahedrite and gold precipitated within multiply fractured veins. Late stage galena, tellurides (altaite, nagyagite, coloradoite), and Pb-Sb or Pb-Cu-Bi sulfosalta with gold constitute bonanza ore assemblages that are variably associated with quartz, white mica, ankerite, and calcite. Fluid inclusion evidence coupled with mineral assemblage paragenesis suggests the depletion of volatiles (C02, H2S) and cooling resulted in the precipitation of high grade gold mineral assemblages.

In 1930 the Shenandoah-Dives Mining Co. near Silverton, Colo., put into operation a newly erected, 300-ton selective flotation plant to mill complex ores from its nearby mine. The operation was a steady producer and was enlarged to treat 600 to 800 tons a day. In 1942 the company opened and started milling an area in the mine containing semioxidized ore. The valuable mineral. Content of this ore was considerably higher than in the straight sulfide ore previously handled alone. The mixture of clean sulfide and semi-oxidized ore was difficult to treat; consequently tailing losses, especially with respect to lead, were high. A. few years later, in order to study the possibilities, of obtaining higher recoveries by a modification of the mill flow sheet, a 1,200-pound sample of mill feed, taken over a period of several days by the company, was submitted to the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station for testing. Although this sample proved to contain more than twice as much lead as the average yearly mill feed, the same problem of recovering the oxidized values were present.

"In all electrical beneficiation methods, the difference in electro-physical properties of the contributed mineral particles, essentially frictional charge, electrical conductivity and dielectric constant properties are exploited to achieve separation. The composition of the raw material determines what kind of either corona charging, conductive induction, or triboelectric separation method should be employed. The process is versatile and is influenced by different parameters related to mineral characteristics, surrounding ambient conditions and electrical and mechanical attributions of the separating device. Electrical separation is surface based beneficiation method which is mainly affected by the surface and surface changes of the minerals. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the electrophysical properties of the minerals can be changed/modified. During electrical/electrostatic separation process, both charge magnitude and its polarity that developed on the particles and therefore, their electrical beneficiation potential is essentially defined by surface phenomena. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the main electro-physical parameters can be changed/modified with applied surface treatment/pretreatment methods to promote separation. Surface treatment of minerals is carried out by different means, including chemical conditioning, irradiation, thermal treatment, etc. This paper discusses and analyze the electrical separation process, electrophysical properties of the minerals with special focus on the effect of surface pretreatment/treatment methods to affect electrical beneficiation potential of the minerals. The surface treatment methods vary in a wide range from simple surface cleaning to more complicated chemical conditioning and doping. The knowledge of the solid-state physics and chemistry leads to improve the beneficiation potential of different mineral systems by choosing suitable treatment method(s). Despite the complexity and multiplicity of the charging mechanisms, difficulties in separating fines it seems to be beneficial make our attempts to further investigate and develop the process as dry, low cost beneficiation process, especially nowadays when environmental concerns, as well as energy and water consumptions are main concerns for mining industry."

A small displacement-small strain finite element technique utilizing the constant strain triangle and incremental constitutive equations for elastic-plastic media that are nonhardening and obey a Coulomb yield condition has been applied to the analysis of gravity flow initiation in a V-shaped hopper containing a powder under lunar environmental conditions. Three methods of loading were examined. Of the three, the method of computing the initial state of stress in a filled hopper prior to drawdown by adding material to the hopper layer-by-layer is superior (as expected). Results of the analysis of a typical hopper problem show that the initial state of stress, the elastic moduli, and the strength parameters have an important influence on material response subsequent to the opening of the hopper outlet.

The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ These gasoline surveys report results of inspections, in oil-company laboratories, of samples of gasoline obtained by representatives of oil companies from service-station pumps in marketing areas throughout the country. In the present survey are presented inspection data on 239 samples of regular-price gasoline, 166 samples of premium-price gasoline, and 157 samples of third-grade gasoline, a total of 562 samples collected during the summer of 1936.

In recent years many creative technologies are applied to SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators. SLon-2500 and SLon-3000 vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are created towards larger scale. Through optimizing the magnetic system and lowering the electric current density, their energy consumption is obviously dropped. New magnetic matrixes are developed to raise the beneficial efficiency of valuable minerals. Special SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are developed which can treat coarser particles of 0-5 mm. Through these technology creations, the mineral processing efficiency of SLon magnetic separators is further raised and their processing cost dropped. Therefore, they have been found wider applications. SLon-2500 applied in Essar Steel of India. In 2007, Essar Steel did a test on its Kirandul hematite ore with SLon magnetic separator and got very good results. The feed grade is 59.77%Fe, after SLon one roughing and one scavenging, the total iron concentrate grade is 65.00%Fe and iron recovery 93.86%. In 2008-2010, the company bought 10 SLon-2500 magnetic separators to treat such iron ores. In 2010 the first SLon-3000 was applied to processing ilmenite. The magnetite-ilmenite deposit is located in Pan Zhi Hua, Si Chuan Province of China. The ore processing flow sheet is: Drum low intensity magnetic separator is used to take out magnetite, and then the SLon-3000 is used to recover ilmenite for roughing. The mags of the SLon-3000 are further cleaned by flotation. The SLon-3000 average operational results are: feed grade 9.52%TiO2, mags grade 17.43%TiO2, mags mass ratio 41.01%, TiO2 recovery 75.09%, non-mags grade 4.02% TiO2, non-mags mass ratio 58.99%. SLon magnetic separators Applied to treat 0-5mm limonite: The feed of SLon magnetic separator is usually 0-2 mm which needs to be ground by ball mill. As many Chinese iron ores are poor grades, if we can throw part of tails before grinding, the grinding cost will be greatly reduced. In 2010, a SLon-1500 and a SLon-2000 were specially built to treat 0-5 mm limonite. The feed grade is 26.51%Fe, mags grade 53.20%Fe, iron recovery 64.26, and tails grade 13.66% Fe. SLon-2500 applied to purify quartz. In 2009, a SLon-2500 magnetic separator was applied to purify quartz in Shan Xi province. Its feed is 0-1mm quartz which contains 0.15%-0.25%Fe2O3, the designed non-mags grade need to be less 0.08% Fe2O3. The production results of SLon-2500 non-mags are 0.05-0.06% Fe2O3, much better than the designed data. SLon applied in Si Jia Ying Iron Mine to recover hematite. Si Jia Ying is a big oxidized iron mine located in He Bei Province of China. In 2005-2010, a plant annually treating 10 million tons of oxidized iron ore was built in which 39 SLon magnetic separators are applied. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 30.44%Fe, iron concentrate grade 66%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 9.65Fe%. SLon applied to recover specularite. Li Lou Iron Mine in An Hui Province of China built a plant annually processing 5 million tons of iron ore in 2010-2011. 25 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover specularite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 31.65%Fe, iron concentrate grade 65%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 10.37%Fe. SLon applied in Da Hong Shan Iron Mine. Da Hong Shan Iron Mine is located in Yun Nan province of China. It treats 4.5 million tons of oxidized iron ore annually. 15 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover hematite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 35.61%Fe, iron concentrate grade 64.95%Fe, iron recovery 74.08%Fe, tails grade 15.55%. World wide applications for nickel use will be summarized and examples of those uses given. Nickel products are critical to many important aspects of modern society. These products are just as important for modern China as they are in other parts of the world. It is argued that future pattern of nickel use in China should be expected to be very similar to that in the rest of the developed world. Total use of nickel in products in China is already very large. In 2004, it was the largest market for stainless steel (nickel containing) in the world. A survey of Chinese stainless steel applications will be presented. Current high nickel prices have revived speculation about substitution, particularly for nickel containing stainless steels. The presentation will discuss some of the complicating factors that need to be taken into account when considering substitution. These factors are as valid in modern China as they are in other developed economies. Recent substitution efforts and the reaction to them will be examined. The Nickel Institute position regarding appropriate application of the various grades of stainless steel will be discussed. Price-motivated substitution in China, and elsewhere, will occur but it is argued that the extent will probably be limited.

The Hidden Secret ore body is located within the Mt Charlotte underground mining system in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Mineralisation of the Hidden Secret ore body is lode style and therefore differs from the typical economical mineralisation mined at Mt Charlotte and consequently demanded a novel approach to the mining methodology. The ore body is lens like in shape, extending 200m along strike, 210m vertically, and dipping at 55 degrees. The lode width varies from 1.5m at the extremities to over 22m in the central zone of the ore body. Average grade is 3.4 Au grams per tonne. The initial mining methodology was Modified Avoca utilising Longhole Open Stoping with pillars, in a bottom up stoping sequence. However, as Hidden Secret became better defined and wider than initially modelled, it was identified that a high portion of gold would remain in the pillars and other mining concerns emerged such as remote backfilling large open voids and potentially unsafe vertical standoff distances between levels and wide open stopes. A re-evaluation of this method was undertaken and a new approach adapting a variation of Avoca methodology was identified to remove the rib pillars and replace them with a sill pillar separating the 4 levels into 2 distinct blocks. This new approach provided an immediate advantage by removing the bogger backfilling activity from the same level of the active stope front, enabling stope drilling and prepping to occur during the backfilling cycle. Bogging productivity has also improved as the fired ore is funnelled to the draw point by the backfill rill, significantly reducing the requirement for remote bogging thus improving bogging productivity. This mining method is currently in progress in the first of the two mining blocks and is on track to realise the targeted recovery of 7,700 ounces from the rib pillars.

During 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington, The investigation consisted of transit and topographic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds Were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and analyzed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing new sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest.

"Jurisdictions across the world have struggled to create and finance systems that can effectively collect and process electronics waste (e-waste). Many different system architectures have been proposed and implemented, but it is difficult for policy-makers and system architects to compare the costs and benefits of different systems, particularly when the systems operate in different contexts. This paper presents a systematic methodology that seeks to address this challenge and uses data from several existing electronics recycling systems across the world to illustrate its implementation. The methodology characterizes three main system characteristics: architecture (e.g., financing and collection methods), context (e.g., jurisdiction population, density, and wages), and performance, both economic and materials collection. A comparison of systems in Europe and North America with different system architectures and contexts illuminates the importance of using the methodology to discern the extent to which architecture and context drive system performance.IntroductionElectronic waste (e-waste) recycling offers several environmental benefits when processing is done responsibly. The controversy around e-waste recycling systems rarely debates such benefits; rather, it focuses on the characteristics of an effective system and whether benefits outweigh costs. Historically, the costs of recycling most electronics have outweighed the value of the scrap recovered. Thus, in the absence of legislation, e-waste recycling systems have been limited to private recycling of high-value waste with minimal consumer participation. E-waste recycling systems now exist in many locations worldwide including Asia, the European Union, Canada and the United States and the amount of related legislation continues to increase. Numerous approaches have been proposed including landfill bans, extended producer responsibility (EPR) and consumer advance recovery fee (ARF) funded recycling systems."

This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed

Twin tunnels were constructed to a length of 863m using TBM in one of the underground metro projects. The tunnels pass through complex geological conditions (soil, rock and mixed conditions). This paper presents the consideration of volume loss and the corresponding ground settlement associated with the excavation of twin TBM tunnels by analytical and numerical methods. Empirical methods were used to calculate the ground settlement induced by the excavation of twin tunnels. The ground settlement values were directly derived from the two parameters: the volume loss and trough width parameter. These parameters are calculated based on the geological conditions at the tunnel face and tunnel overburden. The finite element software, Plaxis 2D was used to model the soil parameters with appropriate geological conditions. Twin tunnel excavation is simulated in Plaxis 2D and the effect of tunnelling on the ground was simulated by percentage volume loss. The suitable line contraction value was applied to the tunnel linings to simulate the volume loss. The surface ground settlement was directly obtained from Plaxis 2D. Instrumentation arrays were proposed along the twin tunnel alignment, to provide the ground settlement monitoring data within the influence zone of tunnelling activities. The derived ground settlement values from analytical and numerical methods were compared with the actual field instrumentation and monitoring data. From the field instrumentation data, the actual volume loss values were calculated. The compatibility of ground settlement and volume loss calculated using analytical and numerical methods and those measured using field instrumentation data is discussed in this paper.

This Bureau of Mines report presents several factors that currently enter into the design, manufacture, and testing of windows and lenses used in explosion-proof enclosures. Emphasis is also given to the sealing concepts for lenses. Criteria for adhesives and sealants are suggested based on the survivability of an explosion-proof enclosure as a structure, rather than upon the minimum material properties of its constituents. Procedures for surface preparation of adherends are also discussed.

Longhole open stoping was introduced in the zinc-rich 'B' lode at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) during 1968. Since then one longitud- inal and a series of transverse longhole open stopes have been developed. The longholes are drilled using Gardner Denver airtrac drilling jumbos and the broken ore is loaded from drawpoints and transported to chutes using Wagner ST5 scoop- trams. The holes were drilled from sill stopes 160 ft apart. The width of an emptied transverse longhole stope was successfully widened by blasting rings of blastholes drilled parallel to the stope wall. Proposed stope and pillar designs for a series of transverse longhole open stopes were assessed using a method of finite element analysis, applied to a longitudinal section through the area. Blastholes have been surveyed for dip and bearing using an Eastman borehole survey camera. The data produced has provided the basis of a study of blast- hole deviation. Deviation of boreholes is considered to be the major cause of the formation of benches in longhole stopes.

Many factors -- political, environmental and technological -- will determine the extent to which the United States realizes the potential of its vast coal resources. Not the least of these factors is technogical development including mining, processing and transportation. With regard to processing technology, about 50% of the 800x106 tons of coal mined annually in the U.S. is processed in preparation plants. The purpose of the physical separations accomplished in these preparation plants is to remove ash (present as clays and other oxide minerals) and sulfur 'present mostly as pyrite). Coal flotation circuits for such separations are becoming more important in the processing of minus 28 mesh coal. (1,2,3) For example in the U.S. in 1960, 31 flotation plants processed 26,500 tpd; whereas in 1980, there were 80 flotation plants which processed 78,300 tpd. This corresponds to an annual growth in flotation plant capacity of 10 per year during the past two decades. Coal flotation is based on the natural or induced hydrophobicity of coal particles which are separated from hydrophilic ash and sulfur constituents by attachment to air bubbles. The coal particle/air bubble aggregates are collected in a froth phase which is created by the addition of a suitable frother such as MISC. Without exception, such separations are made in a conventional flotation cell, which, in essence, is a stirred tank reactor with a shrouded rotor to shear the air as it passes through a hollow shaft. The dispersed air bubbles (4.0 mm diameter) are stabilized by addition of the frother. Collision of the air bubbles with, and/or precipitation of the air bubbles on, the coal particles results in the formation of coal particle/air bubble aggregates which rise in the gravitational field and are collected in the froth phase developed at the top of the flotation cell. Restraints on successful separation by this conventional flotation technique are particle size and retention time. Generally it is found that effective flotation is only achieved for particle sizes between 10 and 1000 microns. Further, with respect to retention time, it is found that a nominal retention time of at least 2 minutes is required for successful separations. These facts limit the effectiveness of conventional coal flotation. Coal fines may be lost in the reject stream and disposal is frequently a problem. The retention time required for conventional flotation results in large floor space demands which limit the capacity of the plant.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating surfactants added to water sprays to enhance the control of dust during coal mining operations. The objective of the present work was to establish the general applicability of adding sulfate ion to anionic surfactant solutions in order to improve wetting action. This was pursued through laboratory wettability testing of four anionic surfactants and one nonionic surfactant in combination with various concentrations of sulfate ion. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of sulfate ion enhanced the wetting characteristics of all the anionic surfactants when applied to hard-to-wet coals, while easy-to-wet coal showed more complex wetting behavior. Sulfate ion in the presence of nonionic surfactant enhanced wetting only slightly or not at all. Surface tension measurements of the dilute aqueous surfactant-sulfate anion solutions indicated this property was not important in coal-wetting phenomena, as long as the value was below the critical value for coal. Sulfate ion helps surfactant reduce surface tension but primarily appears to affect wetting action by altering the adsorption characteristics of surfactant on the coal surface.

Swelling clay soils have been problematic to many types of infrastructure in the United States. However, their impact on underground construction is often misunderstood. The use of swell pressures in design of initial tunnel and shaft support lacks proper guidance and is often mis-interpreted. This paper provides insight and guidance on how to implement a geotechnical investigation program to determine if swelling soil exists at a site and how it impacts the design of temporary support systems for underground projects. An example is provided for how swell pressures were incorporated into the design of an initial support system for a rib and lagging tunnel system and problems that occurred.

Com o objetivo de avaliar as condições estruturais via comportamento mecânico associada ao efeito TRIP realizou-se estudo comparativo das propriedades mecânicas de dois aços inoxidáveis austeníticos comerciais de graus 304L e 201LN. A martensita induzida por deformação foi formada durante a laminação a frio a temperatura ambiente até percentual de redução de espessura de 80% e avaliada via nanoindentação com cargas máximas de ensaio de 1, 20, 50 e 100 gf. Observou-se que as propriedades decresceram com o aumento das cargas utilizadas e apresentaram tendência de estabilização com as maiores cargas.

"In at least three out of every four working faces in metal mines there is no attempt made to cause air circulation other than by use of compressed air, and in at least nine cases out of ten the compressed air is released merely by opening, or partly opening, the valve and allowing the compressed air to escape through open air hose used to convey the compressed air to the drilling machines. Usually no blowers are in use during periods of drilling, as the exhaust from the drill provides cool, comparatively fresh air for the driller; however, in some instances, the compressed-air line is provided with a tea connection, which permits taking air for the drill from one side of the tee, and air for ventilation through a separate hose used as a blower, simultaneously with drilling.Table 1 contains temperature and humidity data as to compressed-air blowers from open end of air hose at 36 working places in eleven metal mines of four States, embracing the mining of gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc ores, and at horizons ranging from 500 feet below the surface to as low as 4900 feet.It is noticed that the ordinary air surrounding the worker at the face gives an average wet bulb temperature of 81.7° F. for the 36 working faces, with 84.7° F. dry bulb and 87.2 per cent relative humidity. The average wet bulb tem¬perature of 36 readings at these working faces of compressed air at the end of the,hose as the air issues from the hose was 67.4° F., or 14.3 degrees lower than the average wet bulb readings of the air of the working places; however, the average dry bulb temperature of the 36 readings of compressed air as it issued from the end of the hose was 79.7° F., or only 5 degrees less than that of the general air (84.7°); the relative humidity was 51.1 per cent as against 87.2 per cent for the surrounding air. Readings were taken in five raises, seven crosscuts, ten drifts and 14 stopes.It will be noted that the velocity or movement of the general atmosphere at each of the entire 36 working faces, was found to be practically imperceptible; this might readily be inferred since compressed air is rarely used on blowers if there is adequate circulation of the general air of the place. Where rook temperatures could be obtained readily, they are shown; it is noticeable that the dry bulb temperature of the air of the working place varies little from the rock temperature, and that the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issues from end of air hose varies only a few degrees from the temperature of the surrounding rock; in some instances the dry bulb temperature of the compressed air as it issued from the end of the air hose was higher than the rock temperature or the dry bulb temperature of the surrounding air."
