THE recent purchase by an American investment trust of a substantial block of shares in a British owned Venezuelan copper operation directs attention to mining activities that have been quietly gaining momentum in that country for a number of years. We hear so much of oil work in Venezuela that attention to its metal-mining activities is in most quarters casual. In gold and copper the country has made some interesting mining records, and two of the old districts are ,digging in for a come-back. Copper Copper production centers in the state of Yaracuy. The Aroa-Cumaragua mining region has had a long and eventful history. The Aroa mine itself, 50 miles from the coast in West-Central Venezuela, was discovered in 1605. First mined in 1632, owned at one time by Simon Bolivar, it has been reopened many times and is now , the basis of substantial operations by the South American Copper Syndicate, Ltd. of London. The latter has operated the property profitably, off and on, for a number of years, paying heavy dividends on a small investment-at times over 300 per cent annually.

In order to develop downstream processing routines for iron ore and to understand the behaviour of the ore during such processing, extensive mineralogical characterisation is required. To determine mineral associations, mineral liberation and grain size distribution, imaging techniques have to be used. There are two main imaging techniques used for the characterisation of iron ore, ie, Optical Image Analysis (OIA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In this article a QEMSCANTM system is used as an example of SEM methodology and results obtained from it are compared against results obtained by the CSIRO ‘Recognition3/Mineral3’ OIA system.Both OIA and QEMSCANTM systems have advantages and drawbacks. Even though the latest QEMSCANTM systems can distinguish between major iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, it is still problematic for QEMSCANTM to distinguish between iron ore minerals very close in oxygen content, eg haematite and hydroheamatite, or between different types of vitreous goethite.QEMSCANTM also can misidentify minerals with close chemical composition, ie haematite as magnetite and vitreous goethite as haematite. In OIA, iron minerals with slight differences in their oxidation or hydration state are more easily and directly recognisable by correlation with their reflectivity. In both methods, the presence of microporosity can result in some misidentification, but in SEM methods misidentifi cations due to microporosity can be critical. Low resolution during QEMSCANTM analysis can significantly affect the textural classifi cation of particle sections.The main conclusion of this study is that, for low iron content ores or tailings, QEMSCANTM can provide much more detailed information on the gangue minerals than OIA. However, for routine characterisation of iron ores with high iron content and containing a variety of iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, OIA is a faster, more cost-effective and more reliable method of iron ore characterisation. A combined approach using both techniques will provide the most detailed understanding of iron ore samples being characterised.

BORN on Sept. 9, 1855, in the city of Spalato, Dalmatia. Austria, Antonio Francisco Luchich was the son of Francis Stephen Luchich, a prosperous shipbuilder and ship-owner of Lesina. His mother, Johanna Giovanizio, was known to the people of Trieste as a woman of unusual learning and piety. After receiving his high school training in Trieste, Antonio Luchich entered the Polytechnic Institute at Gratz in the year 1875, graduating two years later as an engineer. He then entered the Naval Academy of Fiume and Pola as a Midshipman, receiving his commission as a Lieutenant in 1878. In 1879, then 24, Antonio Luchich obtained a leave of absence from the Austrian Navy and came to Saginaw, Mich., to visit an uncle. He remained in this country and on May 4. 1885 at Norfolk, Va.. he became Anthony Francis Lucas. an American citizen.

This report summarizes the work accomplished under Bureau of Mines contract H0188068. The contract required design and construction of a high voltage (7.5 KV) explosion proof cable connector for use on underground coal mine drag cables. A connector was constructed with elastomeric phase insulators that provide insulation shielding throughout the connector length. Connector housing was made of flame resist-ant cast poly urethane with no exposed metal components. Electrical and mechanical testing of the completed coupler resulted in satisfactorily meeting most of the design testing requirements.

Mineral sands represent an important new resource being developed in the Murray Basin, including parts of western Victoria. This paper will outline a simple methodology for mineral sands characterisation, developed as part of the AMIRA-managed project P777 æThe Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of ClericiÆs Solution)Æ. This project is currently sponsored by three multinational mining companies (De Beers Consolidated Mines, Iluka Resources Limited and Rio Tinto Limited) and is developing an innovative laboratory mineral characterisation procedure that will allow the replacement of the currently employed highly-toxic chemicals.Mineral sand resources almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively heavy) mineral. Titanium minerals are found with a large range of titanium contents, giving rise to density variation and often subjective mineralogical descriptions. Companies tend to rely on laboratory heavy liquid separation in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (æheavyÆ) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilised at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. However, beyond this value currently only organic liquids can be used. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0, hence æClericiÆs solutionÆ. For the characterisation of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (eg anatase sg 3.9, rutile sg 4.2, ilmenite sg 4.4 û 4.7 and zircon sg 4.6 û 4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to ClericiÆs solution. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by very few laboratories worldwide with costs reflecting the chemical costs (though extensive efforts are made to recover and reuse the liquid, plus the requirement of its removal from the mineral samples), the infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (eg blood testing of exposed staff, inventory management). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation is being developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, that can replace ClericiÆs solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (eg -250+150 microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 5.0 will be outlined and the comparison of results with ClericiÆs solution presented.

This study presents a method for recovering valuable metals and synthesizing anhydrite from steel slag using sulfuric acid leaching and solvent extraction. The process achieved high leaching efficiencies for V, Ti, Fe, and Mg, and produced anhydrite with 93.09% purity. The leachate was further processed to separate and recover V, Ti, Fe, and Mg using selective stripping and precipitation methods, offering a sustainable approach to steel slag utilization.

The paper will review the marked upsurge in the installation of new continuous metal coating lines, both hot dip and electrodeposition. Although some of this new capacity has been replacement for obsolete facilities or directed at traditional markets, eg building products, consumer durables etc, by far the major portion is targeted at the automotive industry. The reasons for the rapid growth of coated automobile panels are discussed. A comparison of the installed capacity with projections for this market indicate that a severe over-supply situation has arisen. Many coatings are now available for the automotive industry, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but none as yet wholly satisfactory. Coating development has mainly been cost driven. This favours hot dipped coatings, providing surface quality and pressing problems can be overcome. The high cost per unit thickness of electrodeposited coatings has also seen pure zinc coatings being replaced by thinner, more corrosion resistant alloy coatings such as zinc-nickel and zinc-iron. Recently resin overlays have been introduced to improve the performance of electrodeposited coatings. Developments in coatings for the more traditional markets will be described. The fastest growing market in the last decade has been prepainted product for the building industry. This has led to the installation of extra painting capacity and again it appears an excess capacity situation has occurred. Over the same period the traditional zinc coatings have continued to lose market share to the zinc/aluminium alloy coatings, Galvalume and Galfan. These have been joined recently by '1'aiyo Crack-Free which has been taken up by some metal coaters. Galvalume is now widely accepted as being the best available coating for unpainted applications. It is also suggested that 'spin-off' coatings from automotive developments might find a niche in the consumer durable market. The end users of coated products, particularly the automotive industry, have demanded improvements in quality, such as surface smoothness, formability, etc. At the same time the new coating lines have to process wider strip and run at faster speeds. To reconcile these somewhat incompatible needs has required numerous process improvements, many of which need in-line instrumentation and computer control. The more important of these changes are discussed briefly. Finally the paper will describe the recent developments which have occurred in continuous galvanising in Australia and put them into context with the rest of the world.

The factor of safety, the traditional measure of stability for earth embankments, is graphically presented in factor of safety charts in this Bureau of Mines report. Factor of safety contours are drawn for homogeneous earth embankments for two contrasting situations: (1) no phreatic surface and (2) a phreatic surface that assumes 10-pct freeboard. The factor of safety can be read directly from the charts if the physical properties of the soil and the geometry of the embankment are known. The curves provide a quick first approximation of the "most stable" and "least stable" condition of the embankment. The Simplified Bishop Method was used for the safety factor calculations, and a sequence of least squares curve fitting steps was used to present the factor of safety in final chart form.

"The last edition of Tax Notes expressed concern about two proposed tax changes in Finance Minister Paul Martin's 1995 budget that could have detrimental effects on Canada's mining industry. This month, Tax Notes expands on these concerns. This article is based on a paper that the author presented at ClM '95 in HalifaxIntroductionOn a global basis, there are more investment opportunities in the mining industry today than at any other time in history. Countries in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the CIS, Central Asia, and Asia are competing aggressively to attract investment to all sectors of their domestic mining industries. Today, the demand for investment dollars exceeds the amount of dollars that are available for investment in mining. It is not surprising, then, that the established mineral producing nations are witnessing a decline in spending on exploration and development on their home turf, and an increase in spending in developing countries. In the context of a developed country such as Canada, there are two manifestations of the problem of declining investment: (I) Foreign investors are allocating more of their capital budgets to new opportunities in developing countries; and (2) Canadian juniors and seniors are spending proportionately more abroad. This shift in global spending patterns is the source of some concern for the future of Canada's mining industry, particularly because it is widely believed that the current rate of discovery of ore reserves in this country is too low to replenish depleting reserves.""Government bashing"" has always been a popular pastime in Canada. Invariably, this pastime has focussed, at !east in part, on taxation. In view of the intense competition that Canada faces on the global mining scene, it is important that the role of taxation in the decision-making process be kept in perspective. A fully automatic image analysis system that consists of a microprobe, an energy dispersive x-ray analyzer, and an image analyzer was developed at CANME:I' to determine mineral behaviour that affects beneficiation. The interlacing between the instruments permits automatic identification and characterization of minerals in samples of unbroken ore pieces and of mill products. Different types of information are obtained for minerals in samples of unbroken ore pieces than in samples of mill products, and are used differently. For unbroken ore pieces size distributions are determined for discrete mineral grains to predict a grind at which they might be liberated, and other measurements are Irade to predict the percentage of mineral that occurs as nonrecoverable grains. For mill products the minerals are analysed to determine percentages that (1) are free, (2) are likely to be recovered in concentrates, (3) are likely to be lost to tailings, and (4) could be liberated with regrinding. The image analysis data for mill products are processed by a mineral-metals balance program to determine the distributions of free and unliberated mineral grains at each point in a concentrator, pilot plant or bench test. For samples containing trace minerals, such as gold, an automatic search technique is used to scan the entire area of the polished section for the trace mineral grains. The identified trace mineral grains are characterized with regard to size, liberation, and other properties.

THERE have already been so many subjects of a purely mechanical nature presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers, that it is unnecessary for me to apologize for adding another to the list. When a new invention, or what is supposed to be a new invention, claiming simply an improvement on the well-known devices, is to be described, it is usual to point out the defects of the old and give a history of the object or the art up to date. But, as no doubt a large proportion of the members of this Institute know as much, or more, about the history and use of the steam-engine indicator than I do myself, I will not further preface the subject, than to remind you that what called for the Richards's improvement on the Watt's indicator was high speed ; that the leading improvement was the reduction of momentum in the reciprocating parts; and that this was accomplished by making the parts lighter, and reducing the travel of the heaviest of them, and consequently the speed and momentum. The use of the indicator has been extended, for the speed of steam-engines and other prime movers has been increased, until one engineer at least, John Cooper, of Philadelphia, says, "I want an indicator that will work up to a thousand revolutions." Mr. Thompson, of the Buckeye Steam-Engine Company, of Salem, Ohio, has improved on the Richards's indicator by another reduction in the momentum, which is done by putting the parallel motion nearer the fulcrum of the pencil arm, reducing both weight and travel. The characteristic feature of the indicator I am going to illustrate is a still further reduction in the same direction, which is accomplished by dispensing with the parallel motion altogether. The availability, cost and use of fuel and electricity for the cement industry is difficult to predict with a great degree of accuracy because the historical pattern of factors affecting energy was disrupted during the years 1972, 1973 and 1974. Forecasting is both an art and science and is based on .the premise that the best indicator of the future is the past. Statistical data is used to guide economists and businessmen in their predictions of the future. Even though the energy picture is changing, it is believed that electricity and fuel will be available for the cement industry in the foreseeable future, and this energy will be more costly in relation to the other items that are part of the manufacturing costs for portland cement.

The leasing or tribute system has been an important factor in the development of our metal-mining industry, particularly in the gold and silver mines of the Western States. It has received its widest application in. the early history of many camps and in the last stages of many mines. The system is especially adapted to mining where the ore's occur in narrow veins or are erratically distributed in small bunches or pockets so that selective mining, hand sorting, screening, or hand cobbing is required to produce shipping or milling-grade ore. The leasing system is also applicable to the development of prospects where the owners are unable or unwilling to assume the risks of searching for ore. The virtue of the system lies in the opportunity it affords miners with little capital to get started; at the same time, it rives owners an opportunity to have their property developed at small cost.

This paper presents a novel application of the boundary element method for numerical modelling of the seismic activity and hazard that is associated with the shaft pillar extraction at Bambanani mine in South Africa. In the numerical model, the tabular mining excavations are represented by displacement discontinuity elements, and to accommodate crush, shear, and fault slip seismic events, the numerical model is populated with additional displacement discontinuity elements that represent modelled crush- and shear-type failures in the rockmass. Crush-type failures are evaluated by applying the limit equilibrium method and a Hoek-Brown strength criterion, and shear-type failures are evaluated by applying a Coulomb-friction strength criteria to Ortleppshear and geological features. In this paper, the modelling results are presented as time history analyses of modelled potency from 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2022 and normalised exceedance rates for different mining periods using an upper-truncated power law. The normalised exceedance rates of seismic events that have moment magnitude Mw ≥ 1.0 are lowest for the initial mining period (26 events per year) and highest for the final mining period (218 events per year). The relative errors of the modelled potency and normalised exceedance rates are typically less than 10% or 15%, which suggests that the modelling methodology is appropriate for medium- and longer-term forecasting of seismic activity and hazard, as presented in this paper. Shorter-term forecasting is not considered in this paper.

(San Francisco meeting, October, 1911.) THE nature of slimes handled in the treatment of gold- and silver-ores has been discussed in technical literature to a considerable extent. The subject of slime-filtration from the practical worker's stand-point has also received much comment, and scattered through the literature of the subject are descriptions of many slime-filtration installations. Articles of this nature serve a valuable purpose and assist materially in the design of new and the improvement of old plants. The subject of the physics of slime-filtration has been touched upon to only a slight extent. The underlying principles are worthy of more intensive study and experimentation than they have received, and the main purpose of this paper is to present the results of such study and experimental work as will serve to make clear in part at least many of the principles which control the filtration of slime. Nature of Slime. Much has bean written concerning an accurate definition of the term ? slime," but no comprehensive definition seems to be generally accepted. The reason for this is clear. A slime consists of at least three different substances, each, when separated, possessing distinctly different physical and to a certain extent chemical properties. These substances are extremely fine sand, a colloidal material which may be and generally is in a coagulated condition, and a colloidal material which is in a non-coagulated condition. Suspending a slime in a relatively large volume of water by shaking and allowing sedimentation to take place, results in the fine sand settling out with comparative rapidity, followed by the coagulated material, which settles much more slowly and finally a certain portion remains

The use of pellet feed to adjust the chemical quality of the sinter is an alternative to the depletion of iron ore reserves. However, the addition of ultrafine in the sintering process can cause decrease of permeability and consequent drop in machine productivity. In this context, the present work investigated the addition of natural and ground pellet feed, evaluating its effects on cold agglomeration for sintering and quality of quasi-particles produced. Eight typical mixtures with industrial composition were produced in the laboratory, replacing Sinter Feed with different percentages of Natural Pellet Feed (NPF, 91% <150 μm) and Ground Pellet Feed (GPF, 83% <44 μm). The mixtures were subjected to cold agglomeration tests and the quasi-particles produced were evaluated by screening, shatter test, permeability test and disintegration into primary particles analysis. There was a decrease in the mean particle size of quasi-particles and reduce in permeability with addition of the ultrafines. The addition of NPF favored the layering mechanism in larger quasi-particles. The coalescence mechanism occurred for larger additions of NPF and GPF, being more expressive for GPF additions.

The stripping of coal with mechanical. equipment has progressed since the introduction of the first steam-powered shovel for the retóval of overburden at a mine in Pittsburg, Kans., in 1877...From the smart steam-powered shovels with dippers of less than a cubic yard capacity, small digging radius, and shovels that required manual moving, the trend has been toward large-capacity machines. Steam as power has been replaced largely by electricity, gasoline, and Diesel fuel, and dipper capacity as great as 35 cubic yards has been attained. Shovels and drag lines are self-propelled and revolve through 360°. The cost of these large-capacity modern machines is great, and in order to assure the return of the investment during the life of the property the reserve of coal in the area to be mined must be large;" Many comparatively small areas of coal suitable for strip mining exist, but these areas probably could not be mined, profitably with this large equip- ment. Therefore, heavy equipment has not been used in small areas because of the high cost in place of this equipment, the time and Atpense required to transport the machines to the mine site, and the construction of power lines if the machines are electrical powered.. Scrapers and light excavating equipment ane mobile, and the investment cost is not high. These units have been used in sirring the coal in small areas. A study to determine the methods in, yogue, and economic considerations involved in the use of such equipment was undertaken, and the information obtained is discussed in this report.

Um dos tratamentos superficiais mais conhecidos é a nitretação a plasma, que consiste basicamente na introdução de nitrogênio na superfície da ferramenta, na forma de nitretos de elementos de liga, em solução sólida, a fim de criar uma camada protetora que aumenta a vida útil do material. A nitretação a plasma permite o controle da camada formada através do ajuste de parâmetros como temperatura, mistura gasosa e tempo de tratamento. Porém para ferramentas mais complexas é comumente utilizado um novo processo de nitretação, a nitretação a plasma com gaiola catódica que tem como principal diferencial o aquecimento homogêneo das peças, evitando assim a heterogeneidade da camada nitretada. Outra vantagem é que neste processo não é comum ocorrer o acumulo de plasma o que evita o efeito de borda. Neste trabalho, será analisada a importância da menor rugosidade superficial aliada a dureza superficial no comportamento tribológico do material no processo de nitretação a plasma com e sem gaiola catódica. O resultado dos ensaios tribológicos demonstraram que o incremento de dureza associado a uma menor rugosidade superficial obtido para a amostra nitretada com gaiola catódica promoveu uma redução no coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo. A rugosidade superficial média para as amostras nitretadas com gaiola catódica foi menor que as nitretadas via processo convencional, aproximando-se do valor obtido para às amostras que foram polidas.

Isothermal reduction experiments on carbon-bearing pellets of copper slag were investigated by the thermogravimetric method with biomass carbon as a reducing agent. The results indicated that the reduction process of copper slag‑biomass composite pellets was dominated by gas phase diffusion, and the apparent activation energy was 88.44 kJ/mol. In the temperature range from 1000 to 1200 °C, the metallization rate of pellets increased with increasing temperature, and the maximum metallization rate was 78.4%. The optimal reduction temperature of CSBCP (copper slag-biomass composite pellets) was 1200 °C.
