Igarapé Bahia Mine is located in Carajás area, northern Brazil. Currently Companhia Vale do Rio Doce operates there a CIP / heap leaching plant treating an oxide gold ore containing about 4 g Au /t and 0,2% Cu, which produces 11 t of gold per year. Recent geological survey has identified a signifcant copper-gold reserve underneath the oxide gold ore. The processing aspects of this copper-gold sulphide ore are described in this paper. It includes ore characterization studies, grinding and flotation tests, orebody variability assessment, flowsheet selection and preliminary economical evaluation Emphasis is given to studies aimed at depressing fluorine bearing minerals to achieve a clean and marketable flotation concentrate.

Sterlite Industries (I) Ltd. started its copper smelter in 1996 and worked through the common problems associated with smelter start-ups. Specific issues in the converter area included converter blower IGV problems, punching machine reliability, converter spitting, back collar burning, ,and short converter campaign life. With a very young and dedicated team of engineers and technicians, smelter management assigned teams of three to four members to work scientifically and systematically through each major problem area to recommend and implement appropriate solutions. The converter mouth was redesigned with respect to tuyere and metal height to eliminate spitting and back collar burning. The air line was changed in places to reduce the pressure drop. A new back-up compressed air line and vessel was installed to prevent tuyere blockage in the event of a blower trip or power failure. The converter mouth liners and bricking around the mouth was modified to eliminate metal leaking through the pouring lip Modifications to the punching machines were made to address specific problems and preventative maintenance practices were further streamlined and reinforced to ensure 100% availability of hot metal cranes, converter blowers, punching machines, and ID fans. Matte availability and matte temperatures were improved by streamlining the upstream ISA and Rotary Holding furnace areas. Implementation of a detailed training program for the converter operators significantly improved the operation and morale. Water-cooled double hoods and a third converter were installed as part of the smelter modernization plan. The new hoods dramatically improved hygiene in the crane aisle while the addition of the third converter posed new challenges for the same motivated group of crews with respect to flip flop operation to keep the idle converter hot and to maximize in-stack time, managing crane/ladle logistics, and managing revert generation. This paper describes the converter operation's journey from the initial days of long blowing times and large revert accumulations to present operations with two converter flip flop operation, and also describes the team work, constant focus on increasing productivity and reducing costs, and benchmarking.

Committed to a sustainable development of zinc applications, Union Miniere is investigating processes for the minimisation of waste and residues originating from the classic hydrometallurgical zinc process. In that context, Union Miniere has developed a method for the cold inertisation and solidification of goethite, the Graveliet® process. The result is a hard and inert gravel that can be used in the building industry. During the past two years, a pilot plant for the production of Graveliet® has been built and operated. In the present paper, the Graveliet® process and the pilot plant are described after which the properties of the produced gravel are discussed, from both a mechanical and an environmental point-of-view. Graveliet fulfils the criteria for use as a secondary building material. The GravelietJ process is a viable technology to avoid stockpiling of goethite residues and it thus assures the long-term development of the hydrometallurgical zinc process.

New method for processing of copper and nickel production feed has been developed and tested at pilot unit having 10 t/hr capacity. The process allows single-stage treatment of ore feed including that with high magnesium oxide content and resulting in the production of rich matte, high-grade matte, or moralised alloy for further leaching, as well as dump slag and off-gasses suitable for production of elemental sulphur, liquid sulphur dioxide, or sulphuric acid. Tests results and principal technical and economical parameters are presented.

Dofasco produces Galvanize and Galvalume on a coating line with a sin le liquid metal furnace and has developed not only an efficient liquid metal trans& system but also an effective means of reutilizing the zinc-aluminum mixtures without detrimental quality affects.

Polymeric matrix composites reinforced with coir fibers are being used in many industrial applications such as automobile interior panels and cushions. These composites have relatively low mechanical strength due to the weak fiber/matrix interface. The objective of the present work was to investigate the effect of a surface alkali treatment of the curaua fiber on the mechanical behavior of polyester composites with different amounts of these fibers. The treatment, also known as mercerization, was performed with distinct concentrations, 0.1 and 10% of NaOH at 1 min and 1 hour, before incorporation of the coir fibers into the polyester composite. The results showed no significant change in comparison to similar untreated coir fiber composites. A microstructure analysis revealed that, in addition to reducing the hydrophilic characteristic of the fiber,the treatment also affects the surface morphology and impairs the fiber/matrix interfacial strength.

Renewed interest in olivine refractories has led to efforts to characterize them employing modern techniques of experimentation and data analysis. Initial studies have focused on determination of physical and thermophysical properties. Special equipment for the determination of thermal shock resistance and creep behavior have been constructed. Optimal compositions for maximizing various properties are being identified using appropriate statistical techniques. The overall goal is to develop response surfaces for each of a selected group of engineering design and use properties. Development of ?olivine Refractories? in the United States The term "olivine refractories" is used here because it does appear that domestic deposits of this rock will be the focus of renewed interest and "olivinell is the preferred term in this country. There are extensive deposits of high quality olivines extending through parts of Georgia. North Carolina and in the state of Washington. The eastern olivines are much more localized and extensively altered compared to the western materials. The Washington olivines exist as massive rock deposits in the Twin Sisters mountain area northeast of Seattle and their inaccessi-bility has slowed efforts to develop them. The North Carolina olivines have been used in steel plant applications since the 1930's. Geologists use the term "olivine" to describe assemblages of ortho-silicates. 2RO.SiO2, wherein the RO may be MgO. FeO. MnO. etc. When the RO consists essentlally of MgO and FeO. the material is called dunite and. as such, is synonymous with "refractory olivine." Refractory olivines utilizing North Carolina materials were developed for brick products by Birch and Harvey in this country around the mid-1930's. (I) Their work was completely independent of that of V. M. Goldschmidt and co-workers who used massive dunites located in Denmark. "Injection of wax patterns is the first stage of the multi-stage process of investment casting. The quality of the final casting and its dimensional accuracy is highly dependent on this stage of the process. Pattern waxes used in the industry behave in a complex visco-elastic-plastic manner. The modelling of such material behaviour is therefore not simple.In this paper a number of configurations of die will be shown in which the injection of the wax has been carried out for a range of processing conditions. Some of the dies are transparent and the movements of wax front observed can be compared with those predicted by simulation. Surface defects in final components will also be shown and compared with the location predicted by simulation software. Some discussion will be presented on the limitations of the software used and the time-scales achieved for practical use as a design tool within the foundry environment. IntroductionThis paper presents the research activities carried out at the University of Birmingham on the modelling and prediction of the behaviour of industrial investment casting waxes during the injection of wax patterns. These research activities are done in the context of a more global study of the fundamental aspects of the investment casting process, the FOCAST project. Regarding the wax injection process, the aim of the project is to achieve a better understanding of the key factors that will lead to better castings. The filling of the die during the injection has been studied. Some other phenomena such as shrinkage/warpage or creep under residual stresses are also studied, but not presented here. Two commercial investment casting waxes have been characterised in order to model their behaviour and predict mould filling and subsequent defects.This paper will present the models that have been used in our work, the simulation packages used, the experiments carried out to validate the modelling and exhibit the defects due to bad filling, and finally the numerical simulation results."

VAW aluminium AG has built a "Recycling-Technikum" (Recycling Research Centre) to add a new arm to the company's Corporate Research and Development Department. The Recycling Research Centre, a pilot plant for scientific research, has been in operation since September 1993. These state-of-the-art facilities allow the investigation and optimisation of recycling techniques in 'a global way and in detail. Research is concentrated on the unit operations - processing, melting and waste-gas purification - with the available installations making it possible to compare different alternative process combinations on a 100-kg scale. One of the main targets of VAW research is the development of recycling techniques for packaging. The paper presents an approach to recover the aluminium contained in flexible packaging materials using an integrated melting and waste-gas purification system.

Over the years, numerous hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed as an alternative or complement to smelters for the treatment of copper concentrates. Most of these initiatives met with limited success. Bioleaching is applied commercially for secondary copper minerals heaps and dumps, and bacterial leaching processes are being developed for copper concentrates, although industrial application is still years away. More recently developed processes usually include pressure leaching and/or ultrafine grinding. This paper proposes a new leach process to treat copper sulphide ores or concentrates: the process operates under atmospheric pressure and uses limited concentrations of ferric sulphate as oxidant; the key to the process is the regeneration of the ferric ion, which can be effected in-situ (direct process) or ex-situ (indirect process) using SO2/O2. Examples are presented for the treatment of copper concentrates by agitation leach and of copper ores by heap leaching. Application of the process to copper gold ores and chalcopyrite concentrates is also discussed.

At present the Codelco´s smelter & refinery business have growing complexities, concentrates with lower copper grades, higher impurities contents, and environmental restrictions which have lead to refocus the Codelco business, not only by considering the isolated developments for each of the Codelco´s Smelt & Ref complexes, but also as an integrated corporative complex scheme which improve the economy of scale, optimize the synergies, and include new technologies for higher productivity and lower operational costs. Accordingly, for the 2008-2012 period, Codelco have prepared a Development Plan integrated to the smelters and refineries business units that improve its single potentialities of and include the advances for the Teniente Converter [1] and Continuous Converting [2] Technologies, and also include the concept of uncoupling the smelting process from the converting process allowing a higher operational flexibility, and a better control of its contaminants. Thus, processing the white metal generated in the Teniente Converter unit of the smelter A into the smelter B has comparative advantages. These changes in the business concept allow an overall increment of the smelting capacity by processing only white metal as a final product through a very marginal investment in this way the total or partial conversion of the white metal into blister copper is eliminated allowing to use the available gas capture-treating capacity, and available acid plants for increase smelting capacity as well.

A new technique based on multivariate image analysis (MIA) of digital images has been developed to provide an online measurement of important slag characteristics, such as the presence of exposed metal, the presence of solid phases, and temperature. This paper shall describe the technique and provide some results from analysis using industrial plant data.

Mechanochemical synthesis has been employed to prepare new light weight complex borohydrides, Zn(BH4)2. The thermal calorimetric and gravimetric analysis of these complex borohydrides shows the hydrogen decomposition temperature (Tdec) of about 100° C with theoretical capacity of ~8.0 wt%. This advanced materials based technology is considered to be suitable for attaining the US-DOE grand challenge technical targets. The powder x-ray diffraction analysis of the mechanically milled Zn(BH4)2 exhibits the presence of zinc borate and NaCl phase. The FTIR spectra of BH4-ion in NaBH4 has a characteristic band at 2290 cm-1,whereas in Zn(BH4)2, it occurs at ~2061 cm-1 (bridging B-H bonds) and ~2451 cm-1 (terminal B-H bonds) as well. The reversibility of hydrogen decomposition and recombination process is carried out by PCT measurements with multi-cycling procedure.

Due to very demanding environmental rules, and to the incrementing impurities contents in the processed concentrates, Codelco Norte smelter permanently faces new demands for planning the production program with the present fulfillment of the environmental regulation. Accordingly, the CN smelter along with IM2, developed an impurity distribution simulation model, M-DICE, which predicts the impurities behavior for each of the process units of the smelter under different process configurations and concentrates quality. The development of the M-DICE included the gathering of operational data for the process units of the CN smelter, including temperature, oxygen enriched air, matte grade, etc. Then based on a mass balance for each of the process units involved in the smelter a thermodynamic evaluation was done to derive the arsenic fractional distribution among the condensed (matte/white metal/copper/slag) and gas phases. Then, the validated M-DICE was able to predict the arsenic behavior in the Teniente converter processing complex concentrates with high arsenic content, among others. At present, M-DICE is in its last stage of development, and is expected to be a suitable environmental and process management?s tool for the Codelco-Chile?s smelters.

"Eureka Technology has developed and patented a technology for the recycling of EAFD. Through this process all constituents of the material become salable commodities or are returned to the steel making process. In transforming the EAFD ""waste"" stream into a ""process"" stream the Steelmaker eliminates potential liabilities and the uncertain future of current processes while further reinforcing its role as a recycler. This is a cost-effective and energy efficient technology that combines hydrometallurgic and electrolytic processes resulting in the recovery of salable metals. For instance, unlike pyrometallurgic processes, zinc is recovered in metallic form and no elements are volatilized. This on-site operation also eliminates expensive transportation costs. In summary this technology reduces the cost of dealing with EAFD by recycling material currently being landfilled.IntroductionWorld crude steel production reached a new record level in 2007 - 1.34 billion tons of which 31% was produced by EAF steel makers [1]. This resulted in the generation of over 6 million tons of EAFD. This steel byproduct contains significant amounts of lead, cadmium and other hazardous metals. In the United States the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated EAFD a hazardous waste (EPA waste code K061). With over 50% of steel production in the US coming from EAF steel making this byproduct represents the single largest source of solid hazardous waste generated."

The production of high-carbon ferrochromium in a submerged electric furnace based on double-level technology has some advantages compared to close-type furnaces with one tap hole. These advantages include the reduction of the specific energy consumption for the overall process, good separation of ferrochromium from slag, an effective treatment of raw materials including lean chrome ores (low percentage of Cr2O3) etc. An outline of the operation of this furnace along with the production line of briquettes from fines of chrome ore by using organic and inorganic binders, will be followed by a description of the recent work carried out to improve the energy consumption in this furnace through a pre reduction process of Cr2O3 ores by the off-gas energy recuperated from the furnace and the use of SiC in the feed. A short theoretical analysis of the new work will also be given.

Achieving high current efficiencies when operating at high current densities is a goal for every refinery, whether conventional or permanent cathode technology is employed. To obtain higher current efficiency at increased current density at Caraiba's Tankhouse, the production team decided to change the cathode cycle from eleven to thirteen days, reducing cathode cycle to one per anode cycle. The idea was to reduce the anode-cathode spacing and consequently reduce the potential for short-circuiting them. With respect to current efficiency, the overall result was not much better than that obtained with the normal operating conditions. A new attempt to obtain higher current efficiency at high current density was implemented by going back to two cathode cycles per anode cycle, this time reducing cathode life to ten days. This approach yielded the highest current efficiencies. This paper presents the data generated with the three operating conditions: normal practice, a single cathode cycle per anode cycle, and two cathode cycles per anode cycle with a reduced cathode cycle time. It compares the productivity achieved with each set of operating conditions. An analysis of the main operating parameters as well as the advantages and disadvantages involved with each condition is also presented for future reference.

"Recently, doped calcium thiogallate (CaGa2S4) phosphors have been investigated for use in electroluminescent flat panel displays. The current technique used for the deposition of thin film calcium thiogallate is sputtering. Unfortunately, this requires a high temperature annealing process to provide the desired crystallinity of the phosphor. Recent efforts have focused on the possible use of metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) to produce the CaGa2S4 layer. The use of MOCVD provides an attractive alternative to sputtering since it does not require heating above the strain point temperatures of the glass substrates used for the display panels. To accomplish this, the deposition of both Ga2S3 and CaS is investigated as these compounds are intermediate steps in the development of the phosphor deposition. Uniform, crystalline films of both Ga2S3 and CaS were deposited and the process shows promise for successful deposition of the CaGa2S4 phosphor.IntroductionThe lack of a satisfactory blue phosphor having sufficiently high luminances at low power has hampered the development of high resolution flat panel displays. Recently, a new series of blue emitting materials have been investigated for use in thin film electroluminescent (TFEL) devices. l ,2,3 These phosphors are based on a series of alkaline earth thiogallate host materials of the form MGa2S4:RE where M can be either calcium, strontium, zinc, or barium and RE is a rare earth ion. A full-color VGA TFEL panel using CaGa2S4:Ce as the blue phosphor has recently been fabricated and tested. l This FPD provided a luminance of 10 cdlm2 at 60 Hz. The enhanced blue in this display allowed its color capabilities to approach those of the conventional CRT.The method of depositing the phosphor onto the display panels in these test devices has been sputtering. Unfortunately the phosphor as deposited does not possess the crystalline properties required for optimum luminance. The crystalline structure is achieved by subsequent annealing of the deposited material. Although this post deposition anneal provides the desired crystal structure, it occurs above the strain point temperature of ordinary glass. Consequently, the implementation of these phosphors requires the use of glasses capable of withstanding high temperatures, adding to the cost of the final display unit."

"Residual vegetable fibers as leftovers from crops, industrial activities and consumable items are realistic options to be incorporated into low cost polymeric composites with the aim of replacing other commonly used materials. The present work assesses the technical properties of epoxy composites reinforced with residual fibers from the coconut fruit, also known as coir fibers. Based on these properties, an evaluation was carried out on these coir fiber/epoxy matrix composites to be used as building panels and furniture in comparison with conventional materials.IntroductionThe utilization of waste from industrial activities is presently recognized as important way in preventing environmental pollution as well as developing new products. This utilization would also generate employment and contribute to environmental improvement in global scale. Among such wastes, those from lignocellulosic materials represent a considerable potential for practical application. In fact, about 2.5 billion tons of these materials are currently available [1], and their fiber content is an important option for composites fabrication. Actually, lignocellulosic fibers are now replacing synthetic fibers as reinforcement in resin matrix composites owing to specific advantages such as low cost, biodegradability and renewable characteristics [2,3]. Moreover, as abundant waste, some of these lingocellulosic fibers could help reducing the use of traditional materials like wood and plastics in many industrials applications. This would prevent further stress on the environment caused by depletion of dwindling resources associated with forests and petroleum."

"Freshwater ornamental fish culture is gaining importance in India and cheaper and nutrient rich live foods such as infusorians, daphnids, copepods and tubifecids are needed urgently. In this regard, adequate research has been conducted to produce such live feeds through recycling of agriculture and animal wastes. By this venture, besides generation of additional income, environment is also kept clean. In order to popularise the technologies relating to production of live foods from wastes and generate employment opportunities, training programmes were conducted for 100 Self Help Group women belonging to Thoothukudi district. The topics of the training included, breeding of ornamental fishes by utilizing the building material wastes, production of live foods through recycling of agricultural and animal wastes. A study on feed back was conducted with 100 respondents represented from different villages. The variables such as socio economic status, economic motivation, usefulness of training and constraints were included in this study. The impact assessment of this training of rural women indicated that 79 percent respondents were in favour of using the training for self employment by utilizing different kinds of wastes. Similar training programmes have also been planned in other parts of Tamilnadu. Introduction Ornamental fish culture is one of the most appropriate sectors to provide opportunities of employment to uplift the status of rural women. To ensure women utilize their full potential in useful and profital activities like freshwater ornamental fish culture, it is necessary to provide training and support for rural women which will ultimately lead to empowerment. Self Help Group Women are being trained routinely in India on the production of live foods for ornamental fish culture through recycling of agricultural and animal wastes. In this regard, training programmes were organized for the Self Help Group Women on freshwater ornamental fish culture. Which is gaining much importance in India. Cheaper and nutrient rich live foods such as infusorians, daphnids, copepods and tubifecids are needed urgently. The techniques of live feed production through recycling of agricultural and animal wastes would not only generate additional income by would also keep the environment clean."
