MINERAL EXPLORATION 'The Function of Exploration Mineral exploration aims at locating the presence of economic deposits and establishing their nature, shape, and grade. As all ore bodies are finite, exploration is essentially the lifeblood of the mining industry. It is divided into two phases, reconnaissance and target investigation. It involves geological mapping, geophysical prospecting (aerial and ground or both), geochemical surveys, prospect drilling, and/or exploratory under-ground workings. Successful exploration is followed by development drilling, mine development, and eventually operation. In underground mining, the term "ore" is applied rather loosely to metalliferous rock that can be profit- ably mined, but nonmetallic industrial minerals and energy related materials constitute a large and growing portion of the tonnage extracted by underground methods each year. It is appropriate, therefore, to consider exploration as the search for any useful substance occurring in the earth or in the oceans that is of sufficient value as to volume, grade, chemical and physical com- position, and location as to make extraction by mining commercially profitable for the investment required. The Selection Process The search for ore includes hundreds of mineral commodities. The more successful exploration organizations tend to restrict the search to the mineral commodities for which they have strong exploration expertise and which have a high probability of being concentrated in areas open to exploration and development in sufficient volume, grade, and proximity to the surface to warrant the large expenditures of risk capital in finding an ore body. Special expertise is needed to engage in mineral exploration and development for the extended periods required for success. Individual prospectors continue to discover mineral occurrences, but it generally takes an organization with strong financial resources to carry the exploration process forward to the point of developing "ore." Still greater corporate resources in the form of management, engineering, and sales capability are needed to develop an ore body into an operating mine. In the past, companies other than those engaged in mining rarely conducted exploration, since they lacked the technical skills and know-how to bring a mine to fruition. A notable trend in recent years has been the success of other resource-oriented firms, such as petroleum companies, that have not only acquired the necessary skills to engage in exploration for hard minerals, but are doing so on a far more intensive scale than known in the industry heretofore. The desire to diversify from increasingly regulated oil and gas, the potential for the discovery of a bonanza, and the large scale of mining projects for these capital-intensive firms are the attractions. US government and certain international organizations, such as the United Nations, have fielded sizable exploration programs in the past decade on behalf of Third World countries wherein many of the world's higher grade deposits and scarce mineral resources are located. The level of overall mineral exploration in the industry is, regrettably, closely geared to the business cycle. Accelerated search during the periods of strong demand, shortages, and high prices, together with the long lead times necessary to develop mineral finds, often creates surges in supply which invariably are followed by a collapse in prices. The trend is, therefore, to exploration funding by larger better-endowed firms having the staying power to weather the cyclical nature of mining. Tax incentives, tariff policies, and other incentives have a decided impact on the level and nature of exploration. Surface mining regulations and environmental forces have fostered a renewed interest in under- ground development despite the lower average costs of surface mining. Spiraling inflation has caused mining costs to outpace prices for many mineral substances. Organizations increasingly are directing their search away from high- grade but limited tonnage occurrences toward low-grade disseminated bulk tonnages amenable to mining on a vast scale. Mining continues, therefore, to grow even more capital-intensive with half-billion-dollar mine-mill- smelter complexes now commonplace, compared with the hundred-million-dollar projects of a decade ago. Reconnaissance Exploration Having elected to search for specific mineral commodities, the exploration company narrows its focus to a reconnaissance of those regions offering the best potential. A working hypothesis which is constantly up- dated concerning the geologic controls for ore occurrence guides the search. The possibilities for discovery are best in areas of existing mines and known ore bodies, where the probabilities are high for additional ore occurrences. In such areas, published data on the trends and geologic controls of known mineral occurrences aid the search. Even in some remote territories, a variety of geologic data is available to the explorationist. The major sources of basic geologic data are the libraries of the US Geological Survey (USGS), the state geological surveys, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the US Bureau of Mines, and various institutions such as Colorado School of Mines. Overseas, virtually all of the countries have their own geologic survey groups which are associated directly, or indirectly, with their respective ministries of mines. The objective of reconnaissance exploration is to narrow the search by pinpointing target areas having interesting mineralization. These favorable areas are then investigated in detail to delineate potential ore bodies.

"In urban areas, it is often required to construct additional railway tunnels beneath existing railway tunnels. In this case, dynamic interaction between tunnels at the intersection becomes an important issue, as it amplifies structural behavior causing damage to structures and inconvenience to passengers. In this study, vibration superposition effect at the intersection between existing and newly constructed tunnels is investigated by the numerical method. Dynamic interaction mechanism is firstly examined using simple sine wave load, and then a typical analysis for actual multi-leveled tunnel intersection is performed. The results show that the dynamic amplification due to dynamic interaction of tunnels is 149% at the crown of lower tunnel. This indicates that the vibration superposition effect must be considered when the planning and design of a new tunnel beneath the existing tunnel. 1. INTRODUCTION In these days, there are increasing cases that trains cross without transfer stations in metropolitan areas. Consequently, either tunnel is necessarily to be neighboring or crossing, thus tunnel sections closely located are created as shown in Figure 1. If a new tunnel is constructed beneath the existing tunnel, the vibration due to trains passing through each tunnel can mutually affect. The behavior of coupled vibrations may occur and exceed the allowable structural limit, and cause inconvenience to passengers. Theoretically, when vibration waves are propagated from a source to different locations, amplification or decrease of the vibrations can occur by the principle of wave superposition and interference. Multi-leveled tunnel intersection is one of the cases mentioned above. In the actual tunnel, it is difficult to investigate the vibration superposition effect due to a complex ground conditions and structural geometries. In addition, train vibration itself is multi-source vibration, which cannot be theatrically analyzed. Thus, at the tunnel intersection, train vibration from two tunnels make the problem more complicated."

INTRODUCTION Today, raise drilling (boring) has become the stan¬dard method of raising throughout the Western world. It is estimated that the majority of raise footage com¬pleted in 1977 was accomplished by the raise drilling method. Extensive replacement of the drill and shoot system by mechanized raise drilling has occurred be¬cause users have recognized one or more of the follow¬ing advantages. In a direct cost per meter comparison, mechanized raise drilling is economically more attractive than drilling and shooting. Mechanized raise drilling offers improved personnel safety over the drilling and shooting method. Mechanized raise drilling is a faster and more predictable method for excavation than is drilling and shooting. The raise cost per unit of length becomes less as the raise length increases, offering greater flexibility in the overall design of mines. Mechanized raise drilling provides a substantial reduction in labor requirements. 6) Mechanized raise drilling improves the working environment. 7) Mechanized raise drilling improves the rock in¬tegrity of round, unblasted raises. Increasing acceptance of the raise drilling technique is enhanced by continuing equipment development. Today, a wide range of machines and capabilities is available, machine drive systems have been improved, reliability has been increased, and cutter technology is being improved quite rapidly. Table 1 lists the four major manufacturers of raise drilling machines, cutters, and reamers, together with the approximate number of machines that each company had in operation at the end of 1977. Although Reed and Smith are major suppliers of reamers and cutters, they do not manufacture the drilling machines. Four or five other relatively minor suppliers have built machines, reamers, and cutters for raise drilling, but they did not have a substantial num¬ber of machines in the field at the end of 1977. MACHINES FOR MECHANIZED RAISE DRILLING There are three principal arrangements for making machine-bored raises. They include the use of standard raise drills, reversible raise drills, and blind-hole or box¬hole raise drills. Standard Raise Drills The standard raise drilling machine is set up on one mine level or on the surface, and a pilot hole is drilled from that level or surface to a level below. When the pilot hole has been drilled, the raise then is reamed back from the lower level to the upper level or the surface. This arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 1. Reversible Raise Drills The reversible raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a pilot hole is drilled up¬ward to a higher level. The raise then is reamed back from the upper level to the lower level. This arrange¬ment is illustrated in Fig. 2. The machines used for this type of raise drilling normally are capable of being used as standard raise drills. Blind-Hole or Boxhole Raise Drills The blind-hole or boxhole raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a full diameter raise is bored to a higher level without the use of a pilot hole. This type of machine is illustrated in Fig. 3. Drill Recommendations If access to upper and lower mine levels is equal, the standard raise drill should be used. The complexity of the equipment and associated handling procedures for boxhole drilling far outweigh any mechanical advantage or reduction in the number of operations, provided that access to an upper level is available. If there is good access to a lower level but only limited access to an upper level, the use of a reversible raise drill should be considered. If there is no access to an upper level, a blind-hole or boxhole raise drill is the only practical mechanized system. MACHINE SELECTION There are six major considerations in selecting a machine for raise drilling. These include operating range, cutter loading, machine structure and main¬tenance, drill string configuration, drive system, and automated controls. Operating Range As shown in Table 2 and Figs. 4 through 6, raise drilling machines are available for a wide range of hole sizes. Standard raise drill ratings range from raises of 0.9 m (3 ft) diam and 120 m (400 ft) length up to raises of 3.5 m (12 ft) diam and 900 m (3000 ft) length. Boxhole raise drilling machines are available for raises ranging from 0.9 m (3 ft) to 2 m (6 ft) diam with lengths up to 90 m (300 ft). Table 2 lists, among other criteria, the torque and thrust of typical machines; torque and thrust are the main criteria for analyzing the capacity of a machine. The raise sizes shown in Table 2 assume a condition of medium hard to hard rock formations and optimum cutter loading. The recommended raise size for a given machine can be exceeded when raising softer rock formations or when the operator is willing to accept a lower level of performance; the performance is related directly to the 1093

After 15 years of production, 91 Mt (100 million st) of ore mined and nearly 227 kt (500 million lb) of molybdenum produced, Climax Molybdenum Co.'s Henderson Mine and Mill are being modernized as a new mining level is brought on line. The $40 million investment in mine development and plant modernization positions the Henderson complex as one of the largest, low-cost primary molybdenum producers for the next 15 years. Henderson history The Henderson Mine and Mill facilities are located on the east and west flanks of the Continental Divide about 80 km (50 miles) west of Denver, CO. The underground mine and surface mill sites are linked by 16 km (10 mile) of railroad tunnel and 8 km (5 mile) of surface trackage. The mine, railroad and mill were built between 1968 and 1976 at a cost of $500 million. Each has operated at various levels of production over the past 15 years. The Henderson Mine was originally developed using a highly mechanized, panel caving mining system. Over the past 10 years, mining methods, equipment and railroad operations have been improved to position Henderson as one of the most productive and lowest cost underground mining operations. At the same time, the mill and concentrator facilities were upgraded to reduce costs and improve product quality. During this time, manpower was reduced from 2000 to 560 employees. These 560 people increased productivity to 54 t (60 st) per total manshift. They reduced operating costs by 50%. And they dramatically improved safety performance. However, as the 1990s approached, the modernization of the Henderson mining and milling complex and the development of the new 7700 mining level became the primary goals to guide Henderson into the 21st century.

"Double Shield TBMs can be used in fast track projects for accelerated completion where there is limited information available on ground conditions and there are possibilities of encountering weak ground and shear zones. As such, the shielded TBMs are the primary choice of the machines in long tunnels, but face the possibility of entrapment in squeezing ground, which entails long delays and major risks. This paper examines the possibility of using ground improvement methods to increase ground strength, and thus, increase the capability of the machines to cope with squeezing ground conditions. In this study, 3D finite difference simulation of a shielded TBM in squeezing ground was performed to estimate the operational parameters including required thrust to get a machine out of an entrapment. This analysis was also used to evaluate the possibility of preventing machine jamming by the implementation of pre-excavation ground improvement to increase the strength of the ground. INTRODUCTION In order to face adverse tunneling conditions especially using a shielded TBM in squeezing ground, new shield designs, with extra thrust and torque, step shield geometry with reduced shield diameter from front to the back, and conical shape shields have been used. In addition, many of the new machines have the capability to implement ground improvement at distances up to 50 m ahead of the face in order to reinforce the ground and further increase in their chances to cope with squeezing ground conditions. While these features have been added to the machine, there has not been a thorough evaluation of their impact on improving the chances to avoid machine jamming in weak rocks at high depth, which is conducive to rapid convergence of the ground."

The United States Department of the Interior's Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is responsible for regulating active coal mining and reclaiming abandoned coal mines in the United States. In working with the State government agencies that implement these programs, OSM is building a new approach that moves away from traditional "command and control" regulation and towards an approach that focuses on providing long-term environmental and economic sustainability on lands disturbed by coal mining. This initiative called "Reclaim the Future!" looks to enhance opportunities for economic development, wildlife preservation and enhancement, reforestation, and other beneficial and productive uses of lands disturbed by coal mining. The initiative is also focused on ensuring that the landowners and the local public have significant involvement in determining how best to reclaim mine sites and what post-mining land uses are most appropriate for each individual abandoned mine reclamation project or active mine reclamation. Through the use of the best scientific input in an open, participatory process, OSM hopes to further sustainable development principles for coal mining within the framework of existing United States law.

Although Mexico is known for its important base-and precious-metal deposits, and lately oil, some industrial minerals play an important role in the Mexican economy. Sulfur, the most important industrial mineral produced, accounts for approximately 7.5 percent of the total value of mineral production. This commodity is followed by fluorspar, which accounts for 6.4 percent. Predominantly, the fluorspar deposits are very high grade (75 percent CaF) and are contained in lower Cretaceous limestone in the states of Coahuila and San Luis Potosi. Base-metal deposits in the area of Parral (notably San Francisco del Oro), however, have become important fluorite producers in their own right. (San Francisco del Oro has 12 percent fluorite gangue.) Salt from the Guerrero Negro solar-evaporation ponds in Baja California account for 6 percent of the total shares; phosphate from Baja California also accounts for 6 percent. Barite from man to deposits in Lower Cretaceous limestone in Coahuila and exhalative deposits in the Paleozoic section of Sonora account for 1.0 percent. In addition, Mexico is an important producer of gypsum, graphite, and celestite. Although graphite and celestite are not large-scale operations and thus do not contribute much to the Mexican economy, the Mexican graphite and celestite deposits are among the most important in the world; Mexico is one of the world's few sources of celestite. The celestite is in the form of large, high-grade mantos in Cretaceous limestones in northern Mexico.

World gold production figures and the processes used for gold production indicate a high dependence on both cyanide leaching and carbon adsorption metallurgies. Problems associated with the use of carbon in the treatment of refractory ores as well as economic and environmental considerations associated with the use of cyanide point to the advantages that can be realized through the use of more efficient gold adsorption media and with cyanide recovery. We have developed a process termed AurosaveTM-1 which provides a number of advantages through the use of a new synthetic robust gold adsorption medium, termed Vitrokele TM V-911. This process allows further recovery of gold from a variety of ores and allows for a simplified process for use not involving thermal regeneration or high pressure elution. We have also developed a cyanide recovery process termed Cyanosave ™ which uses Vitrokele TM V-911 and allows efficient recovery of cyanides from decants or tailings and re-use of recovered cyanide. This obviates the high chemical expenses for cyanide destruction where environmental issues require such water and tailings management.

The sodium smectitic clays (bentonites), have more industrial applications in that class of mineral, a driving force to obtain this mineral. In Brazil, there are several occurrences of smectitic clays, unfortunately they are polycationic, with a distribution of several exchangeable cations, where the cation sodium occurs in minor quantity. In this work, the original polycationic smectitic clay was firstly proper characterized and then treated with sodium carbonate obtaining homoionic sodium smectitic clay. The rheological tests in the optimized sodium smectitic clay showed good results for drilling fluids, typical of a sodium bentonite ones.

Most analysts find that progress has been evolutionary in any technologic field. To be sure, a few discrete breakthroughs can usually be identified, but viewed in its entirety, the curve of technologic progress over time tends to be relatively smooth with few discontinuities. Even in those cases where a major scientific discovery is achieved, the rate of technologic progress is limited by the often surprisingly slow rate of commercializing the concept into usable products. Whereas discovery and invention tend to be discrete events, technical innovation is often a painfully slow process. In spite of overall gradual change, technologic progress in most fields, when viewed in retrospect, tends to reveal certain relatively homogeneous periods where little change is evident, separated by episodes of accelerated progress. Thus, open-pit mining over the past century has changed from predominately train haulage to truck haulage and is now experiencing a major increase in belt haulage. Ore reserve estimation is another field that fits the same pattern, and the history of mine evaluation lends itself to a similar analysis. Evaluating mine investment opportunities is a fascinating aspect of mining. The unique set of risks inherent to every mining project is particularly intriguing. Geologic risks are most obvious, since faulty ore grade and tonnage estimates are among the leading causes of mine failures. Wide swine's in mineral commodity prices are usually cited as another major risk in mining. Because any ore deposit is a finite resource and the miner has limited discretion in selecting a mining sequence, mines are generally at the mercy of notoriously fickle commodity markets. There is a tendency for many mine investment analysts to feel that mineral market uncertainties are unprecedented in severity. Of course, prices in other markets rise and fall also-in some cases as precipitously as with minerals. However, two other mining characteristics tend to compound this marketing risk. First, the preproduction development period for a new mine is characteristically long. Under extremely favorable conditions, a significant mine may be developed in as little as two years, but the norm is four to six years or more. Second, mining is among the most capital intensive industries, consistently ranking near the top among all industrial sectors in assets per employee, and near the bottom in annual sales dollars per dollar of assets. Thus, mine investors typically have large sums invested for a long time before the outcome of the venture is determined by notoriously unpredictable markets. This is not a business for the faint of heart, and the importance of sound investment decision making is obvious. The high risk and technical complexity of mining operations have combined to require greater attention to financial evaluation by mining engineers than by most engineers in other specialties. Nearly all early mining engineering textbooks dealt with problems in mine valuation in a detailed manner; and, today, the sophistication of capital investment analysis is high in the mineral industries. Traditional Mine Valuation Methods Although some evaluation process has no doubt accompanied nearly every mine development throughout history, a formalized quantitative approach first emerged in the last half of the 19th century with the establishment of academic programs in mining engineering. The philosophy and approach to mine valuation that evolved at this time were, with periodic minor refinements, considered the standard for nearly a century. Only after 1960 did major changes begin to occur. The traditional approach to mine valuation reflected the investment community's historic attitudes toward risk. Mines were generally considered too risky for debt financing, and virtually every new mine was financed from internally generated funds or new equity subscriptions. The recovery and destruction of cyanide in gold tailings is currently a topic of great interest for both financial and environmental reasons. The environmental problem is particularly important in the U.S.A. at present with the environmental lobby waging a campaign to eliminate the problem of migratory birds dying after drinking tailings dam wate. Tough legislation with severe fines and jail sentences for company executives have been introduced in several states for exceeding cyanide limits. To reduce cyanide levels in tailings dams chemical treatment, including acidification, alkaline chlorination, the INCO sulphur dioxide oxidation process and the Degussa hydrogen peroxide process amongst others are being. used. In addition several processes are at various stages of development for the recovery of residual cyanide from gold tailings. Among these is the process developed by Cyprus Gold and pilot tested by DSIR Industrial Development. This process uses air to strip cyanide from the acidified barren pulp and will be used at Cyprus Gold Mines Golden Cross Mine on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand (Fricker & OWers 1990).

In the early days of the United States, gypsum was most commonly used for the manufacture of plasters with energy being used for quarrying, grinding, and calcining of gypsum rock. With the dramatic switch to gypsum-drywall construction after World War II, the energy usage per ton of rock processed increased more than threefold, and with the rapid growth of the construction industry, the total energy consumption in gypsum-board production alone increased eightfold during the period from 1940 to 1973. The gypsum industry was one of the first to recognize the need for energy conservation and has voluntarily reported its progress to the Federal Energy Administration for the past several years. Efficiencies in the use of energy have resulted in decreasing the unit consumption an estimated 10 percent during the past six years. Improved combustion efficiencies, optimum operating conditions, more liberal use of insulation, and heat recovery will all contribute to the gypsum industry's goal of using less energy. Gypsum products today are vital to over 85 percent of new housing construction in the United States.

This paper describes a new approach for examining the kinetics and mechanism of zinc dissolution from sphalerite concentrate in acidic ferric sulfate solution in the presence of manganese dioxide. A literature search was performed to access the possible action of the two oxidizing agents, i.e., ferric ion and manganese dioxide. The possibility of galvanic coupling between ZnS and MnO2 and the cyclic action of the redox couple, Fe2+/Fe3+, on these two minerals were theoretically examined based on corrosion principles. Expressions for the mixed potential (Em) and the mixed current (im) were derived for the relevant corrosion and galvanic couples. Leaching experiments were conducted to establish which of the above phenomena is operative during leaching. The results indicated that the dissolution mostly occurs by the action of ferric ion on ins producing ferrous ions. The presence of MnO2 enables a quick conversion of ferrous to ferric, which maintains the rate of in dissolution. The process has promising features for commercial exploitation.

The need for geological control in orebody estimation and modelling is self- evident to geologists and mining engineers engaged in practical day-to-day estimation. It is only fairly recently, however, that attempts have been made to incorporate explicitly such requirements into published accounts of geostatistical estimation; see, for example, Dowd and Scott (1982, 19841, Rendu and Readdy (1982), Dagbert et al. (1984), Dowd (1984), Benest and Winter (1984). In practice, many geological controls in automatic or semi-automatic estimation and modelling are essentially geometrical controls. The aim of this paper is to present two techniques for geological/geometrical control. Whilst the applications are new, neither technique is entirely original and both have been adapted from other fields and sources. Both techniques are, in some sense, types of estimators and/or interpolators of shapes. The first is a method for fitting spline surfaces to control orebody boundary estimation and to unroll orebodies. The second is an application of Minkowski addition to interpolate shapes such as orebody outlines or stope boundaries and to control estimations.

With commodity prices rising again and market conditions stabilizing, the Metals Economics Group (MEG) found that most mining companies increased their exploration budgets in 2010. In the groups 21st edition of the Corporate Exploration Strategies (CES), MEG found a 44-percent rise in the estimated worldwide exploration total for 2010. MEG found that the estimated total 2010 budget for nonferrous metals exploration reached $12.1 billion, reinstating almost two-thirds of the industry?s $6 billion in cuts to exploration in 2009. Nonferrous exploration refers to expenditures related to precious and base metals, diamonds, uranium and some industrial minerals; it excludes iron ore, aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. In 2008, exploration budgets were at an all-time high of $14.4 billion. This capped a six-year run in which budgets rose. In 2009, nonferrous exploration budgets dropped 42 percent in 2009 as the global economic crisis and declining prices for almost all commodities took their toll on the industry. Metals prices - the primary driver of exploration spending - have improved markedly since bottoming in early 2009, and have traded well above their long-term trends throughout 2010. In response, major, intermediate and junior companies have all increased their aggregate exploration allocations in 2010. In particular, the significant improvement in the availability of equity financings for the juniors over the past 12 to 18 months has allowed this group to account for the largest share of the overall increase in exploration spending this year.

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers are conquering the world for reason that they are able to solve any severe fouling problem in indirect heat transfer due to the circulation of cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube exchangers. In most cases, these particles consist of chopped metal wire. Moreover, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers perform with excellent heat transfer at very low liquid velocities, which enables completely new designs of conventional shell and tube configurations. This article explains the principle and application of this self-cleaning heat exchange technology and also pays attention to an actual case of a revamp of the severely fouling exchangers of a conventional multi-effect evaporator into a self-cleaning configuration. Possibilities for the revamp of conventional exchangers suffering from massive and very hard scale deposits are found in a variety of metallurgical processes, such as: The refining of nickel, the production of alumina from bauxite and many others.

Recognizing that throatbush wear rate has a major impact on the overall efficiency of slurry pumps, Weir Minerals has developed superior rotating and axial adjustment technology.In many applications, the pump’s throatbush is the component that has the shortest life compared to the impeller and liners, with considerable variability.Adjusting the gap between the throatbush and the impeller front shroud reduces hydraulic recirculation in the pump. This prevents localized wear on the throatbush, improves hydraulic efficiency and lowers the total ownership cost for the operator. To avoid impacting the plant’s production, these adjustments are often performed while the pump is operating. However, this can have safety implications for individuals working at the front of the pump unit.“Manually adjusting an alloy throatbush on a large pump requires several people and is laborintensive. It requires mechanical tools to adjust the four pusher bolts, one at a time, in order to reduce the gap between the throatbush and impeller. We wanted to find a safer and quicker way to extend the wear life of the pump with regular adjustments, which led us to development of this technology,” said Marcus Lane, global product manager for centrifugal pumps for Weir Minerals.“Our automated throatbush adjustment solutions are available for pumps fitted with either rubber or alloy throatbushes on Warman slurry pumps used in the most arduous applications, and have been designed with our customers’ safety and pump operation in mind. By mechanizing the adjustment procedure, personnel are removed from the line of fire, and the accuracy of axial movement is increased,” said Ron Bourgeois, director of slurry pumping technology group for Weir Minerals."

[Introduction] Since excess lung cancer mortality was first noted in the late 1800's among Joachimsthal-Schneeberg miners, there have been a number of studies of the long term health effects among various types of miners exposed to elevated levels of radon and its radioactive decay daughters. Substantial excesses of lung cancer have been noted among miners in the Joachimsthal mines (Sevc, 1976) , lead-zinc miners in Sweden (Axelson, 1979) , fluorspar miners in Canada (DeVilliers, 1971) , iron miners in Sweden (Renard, 1974) , uranium miners in Canada (Hewitt, 1976), and metal (Wagoner, 1963) and uranium miners in the United States (Lundin, 1971; Archer, 1976). The latter prospective cohort has also been shown to be at an excess risk of death due to tuberculosis, nonmalignant respiratory disease, and accidents when followed through September 30, 1974 (Archer, 1976). This report extends the followup of this cohort of miners through December 31, 1977 and expands the mortality analysis to investigate more cause-specific categories. [Methods] During the decade beginning with July, 1950, medical teams from the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) examined 3362 white and approximately 780 nonwhite males who had worked underground in uranium mines in the Colorado Plateau at least one month by January 1, 1964. Occupational, medical, and smoking histories were obtained during the examinations and often updated/confirmed during subsequent annual censuses of the miners conducted by the USPHS. The white miners now have been followed-up through December 31, 1977 using the Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service, direct telephoning and various other sources. Death certificates were obtained for the deceased and coded directly into the Seventh Revision of the International Classification of Diseases, Adapted, using the rules in effect at the time of death. Deceased miners for whom no certificate has yet been located were assumed dead on the date specified by the reporting agency, cause of death unknown. The uranium miners cohort was analyzed using a modified life-table system developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Person-years at risk of dying (PYAR) were calculated for each miner from his first USPHS medical examination date or date upon completion of one month of underground uranium mining if that was later. PYAR were calculated specific for five-year age groups, calendar periods, and periods after first underground uranium mining. The numbers of cause-specific observed deaths among the cohort occurring by December 31, 1977 were compared to the numbers of expected deaths. The expected deaths were calculated by multiplying the appropriate PYAR by the United States death rates for white males specific for five-year age groups, five-year calendar periods, and cause. The results were summed over the age and calendar period specific categories to obtain the total expected deaths for each cause. Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR's) were calculated for each cause by dividing the observed number of deaths by the expected number of deaths and multiplying by 100. In some tables, two-sided 95% confidence intervals for the SMR's were computed using either Fisher exact confidence limits, if the observed frequency was less than eight, or approximate confidence limits, if the observed frequency was eight or greater, to indicate statistical significance. Because a priori hypotheses had been well established, one-sided lower confidence limits were used for tuberculosis, lung cancer, other nonmalignant respiratory disease (ONMRD), accidents, and total mortality. [Results] The cohort included 589 miners first examined in either 1950, 1951 or 1953; 753 first examined in 1954; 1235 first examined in 1957; 5 first examined in 1958; and 782 first examined in 1960. In Figure 1 the distribution of the cohort by first year of underground uranium mining indicates that 13.7% started before 1947 and would have thus had an opportunity to be followed beyond 30 years

As the 2011 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2011 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 330. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a professional society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2011 Transactions is the second Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It appears solely in electronic format. The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which will better serve the mining community. Based on the feedback from the 2010 Transactions in e-book format, I believe that the transition to the all-digital format was the proper decision. The 2011 Transactions contain some of the most interesting research from the past year, including a 10-year profile of roof and rib fall trends from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a new cross-disciplinary application of the tools of epidemiology to assess and mitigate risk in coal mines . This 2011 Transactions comprise of a total of 82 technical papers (626 pages including index), including all 19 papers published in 2011 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 63) and all 32 papers published in 2011 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 28). Additionally, this volume contains 31 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 82 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2011 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.
