Mine valuation is a multifaceted, interdisciplinary process by which the economic viability of an old, existing, or new mining property or venture is determined. The problems associated with arriving at a representative and accurate value for a mining property are complex and numerous, and the procedures utilized in determining these values vary from simple, back-of-envelope calculations to sophisticated mathematical manipulations requiring computer modeling and analysis. Regardless of the complexity or the degree of sophistication associated with any particular project, the evaluation process must ultimately provide management with two basic types of information. First, the evaluation process should indicate whether or not the mining project is economically viable after careful consideration of all engineering, environmental, geologic, and other variables pertaining to the project. Second, the evaluation process should provide management in- formation on the relative attractiveness of the project when compared to other alternatives. In some cases, it may be extremely difficult to supply this information for a project directly. Nonetheless, the evaluation process should and must present all information necessary in a format which can be incorporated into the decision-making process as expeditiously as possible.

Coal is expected to become an increasingly important source of energy in the future. Coal production has already increased from about 650 million tons in 2975 to about 875 million tons in 1984 (Wilkinson, 1985). The declining trend of labor productivity in the early seventies was a source of concern for Consolidation Coal Company (Consol). To improve productivity, a gradual change from room-and-pillar mining to longwall mining has been taking place within Consol. Consol produces 45 million tons of coal annually with about 70 percent of the production coming from underground mines. Consol introduced longwall mining in the early seventies and currently operates about 20 longwall faces. The longwall faces are in mines in the Appalachian region in the States of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The successful operation of longwall faces has contributed to a recovery of productivity and to an improvement of mine safety.

Introduction The kinetic approach, to understand a process in detail, has been extensively used in the unit operations of many engineering systems. In green pelletization, the kinetic studies have been mainly oriented towards quantifying the growth mechanism (Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1964; Sastry and Fuerstenau, 1977; Capes and Danckwerts, 1965; Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1966; Kapur, 1972) and in a few cases, relating the rate of growth with added liquid content (Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1964; Newitt and Conway-Jones, 1958). Studies on the kinetics of green pelletization, in terms of the order of the kinetics are virtually non-existent. Sastry and Fuerstenau (1970) classified the agglomeration process into "free in-space" (dilute particle system) and "restricted-in¬space" (highly dispersed particle system) and noted that the former is a second-order process while the latter corresponds to a pseudo first-order rate process. The present paper attempts to describe the kinetics of green pelletization, in terms of order of the kinetics, using pyritiferrous shale as the material system. Experimental Pelletization experiments were carried out using -100 mesh pyritiferrous shale, in a laboratory disc pelletizer, at four intervals of pelletization time (15, 20, 25 and 30 min). The green pellets obtained were size analyzed. The size distribution of pellets has generally been represented by a single parameter such as the mean granule diameter, ratio of maximum and minimum pellet diameter, etc. In the present study, the d50 (50% passing size) of pellets has been considered to represent the size distribution of pellet. Testing methods are described to help in decisions of selecting the most viable comminution circuits. The authors present a comparison evaluation based on numerous studies to help make initial choices for feasibility evaluations. An update summary of completed Bond grindability and Abrasion Index testwork at Allis-Chalmers Process Research Test Center for all materials is included. "What is the best circuit to comminute primary crusher product to make beneficiation feed?" This frequently asked question has the implication that there is one circuit which is universally the right circuit. The answer has been sought ever since it has been necessary to break rock to liberate entrapped mineral values. With every new contribution to the art and the science of comminution, the scope of the discussions broaden. It is not even possible to define what the abstract term best means.

The design of underground nuclear waste disposal facilities poses new problems related to the requirement of long term safety against radionuclide migration. The degree and effects of rock disturbance caused by construction and by the long term thermal effects from the hot waste must be predicted with confidence. Computer modeling can, to an extent, be verified by accelerated near-surface tests. Credible extrapolation to deep, long-term conditions requires successful near-surface modeling verification, proper characterization of near-surface and deep rocks, and successful determination of in-situ stresses. Excavation induced disturbance may be assessed primarily by empirical evidence.

Introduction This article discusses the unique range of properties of platinum and its applications as a high technology metal. World reserves of this strategic and precious metal are confined mostly to South Africa and, to a far lesser extent, the Soviet Union. An analysis is given of past trends in world platinum output. The timepath is computed for the world platinum output rate, covering a period of more than 350 years. This is based on the postulate that the industrial conversion of a virgin resource progresses according to a Sigmoid curve. This computation is performed by means of a nonlinear, three-stage optimization model employing a multiform Sigmoid function. Finally, the price dynamics are examined. Platinum is the most important of the group of the platinum metals to which it gives its name. Other platinum group metals are iridium, osmium, palladium, rhodium, and rhutenium. The metals occur in nature in close association and are chemically very similar to each other. Three members of the group - platinum, iridium, and osmium - are the heaviest metals known to man. Platinum's density is 11% heavier than gold and about twice the weight of the same volume of silver or lead. Properties Platinum is a typical grayish-white metal. Its special properties were known 1000 years ago to the American Indian craftsmen of what is now Ecuador and Colombia. From those distant beginnings, platinum is now firmly established as the most precious and distinctive metallic element known to mankind. It is shown in Table 1, platinum has a unique wide range of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties including high melting point, resistance to chemical attack, high catalytic activity, mechanical strength, and malleability. These properties make it indispensable for use in many industries. Application Platinum is first and foremost a high technology metal. During the last few decades, fertile scientific minds searched for and developed widespread cost-effective uses for this precious metal. Its unique properties render it irreplaceable in many key industrial processes. Important major fields of application include: • protection of man's natural environment (pollution control), • defense, • fuel production, • fertilizer manufacture, • glass and glass fiber manufacture, • pollution-free energy generation - replacement of nuclear and fuel operated power plants, • electronics, • dentistry, • medicine, and • jewelry. Besides these industrial markets, platinum is increasingly finding a place in investment portfolios around the world as investors switch from gold and silver holdings to this relatively scarce and strategic commodity. Platinum has a growing popularity among private investors. This is being accelerated by the predicted "big crash" of the US dollar and its associated weak currencies, which American financial analysts are expecting towards the end of the decade. Figure 1 shows the demand for platinum in various applications throughout the western world in 1986. The total demand amounted to 88.6 t (97.6 st) of which autocatalyst usage accounted for 32.8 t (36 st) or 37%, the biggest share. Catalytic converter technology is increasingly centered on rhodium-platinum three-way catalysts. These catalysts are able to deal with all three pollutants - carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides - in a single catalytic unit. The introduction of these three-way converters will result in a further steep rise in the platinum demand for autocatalysts. In this chapter, I shall discuss railroad con¬struction for modern underground coal mines. Because men, materials, and supplies are being moved more often and farther by rail, the ef¬ficient and safe construction of the system takes on new importance. Most large coal mines are opting to use track haulage over other support transportation systems because of cost, ease of installation, reliability, and other factors. En¬gineers tackling the problem of designing such a transportation network must be aware of all the steps required for an effective transportation system design. This chapter discusses all aspects of efficient trackwork construction. The areas covered in¬clude design factors, laying the track, installing turnouts and switches, and installing trolley wire. Each area includes a description of the steps needed to complete the work.

INTRODUCTION In 1979 the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health of the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) defined a programme of work needed to improve radon dosimetry and monitoring. A Group of Experts in this field was established by the NEA and at the first meeting of the Group the authors were designated an initial task with the following terms of reference:- To review dosimetry of radon, thoron and their daughters, and in particular:- - to examine analytical models for the assessment of dose to individuals who are exposed to aerosol mixtures of these nuclides; - to examine the state of knowledge of the characteristics of aerosol mixtures of these nuclides and other factors that influence the dose to the lung, and identify those parameters which should be measured for dosimetric purposes in radiological surveillance programmes; - to identify areas where further study or research are needed. In this presentation we attempt to examine, with these objectives, the relationship between exposure to radon and thoron daughter aerosols expressed in terms of the working level month l (WLM), or its SI equivalent, and dose accumulated by sensitive tissues of the lower respiratory tract. Over the past two decades many attempts have been made to calculate the lung dose equivalent to l WLM exposure in mine atmospheres, usually in terms of the maximum dose to basal cells in a small part of the bronchial tree. The calculations have employed variously detailed models of airway anatomy, aerosol deposition, ciliary clearance and dosimetry of tissue at the bronchial surface, and are well reviewed elsewhere (Walsh, 1970; UNSCEAR, 1977; Jacobi, 1977; Fry, 1977). They agree in the conclusion that basal cells in segmental bronchi (between about the third and fifth bronchial generations) receive the highest dose, although estimates of this dose differ by more than an order of magnitude, ranging from about 0.2 to 12 rads per WLM (2 mGy to 120 mGy). The most critical parameters of these models are the assumed depths of basal cells below the bronchial surface and the fraction of the WL carried by free ions. When more realistic values of these parameters are substituted (Jacobi, 1977), the dispersion in calculated maximum doses to basal cells is reduced to give a much smaller range from about 0.3 to 1 rad/WLM (3 to 10 mGy/WLM). The parameters and methods employed in these various models, however, remain too diverse to infer the sensitivity of the dose conversion to practical variations in aerosol characteristics and the additional factors determining lung deposition and clearance. We have therefore taken the approach of developing newer models (Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James et al, 1980) that can encompass the range of available experimental data on the physical and biological behaviour of radon and thoron daughters and also accommodate the different interpretations that can be put upon them. The precipitation characteristics of copper and nickel cyanides from solutions continuing copper zinc and nickel cyano complexes are examined. Equilibrium precipitation calculations are presented as well as comparative experimental data. The practical significance of the precipitation data is discussed in the co·ntext of an initial step m an overall treatment strategy for mixed cyanide effluents.

The Greenwich Collieries Co. is a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Mines Corporation, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the PP&L Co. which serves the northeastern portion of Pa. PP&L annually consumes about 11 million tons of coal per year and is the largest consumer of both bituminous and anthracite coal on the eastern seaboard. Development work for Greenwich started in 1969. The coarse coal plant was constructed in 1970, with the raw fines bypassed. This worked very well for our requirements at that time; however, the Greenwich mining plans were extensively changed, longwall mining units were installed and low coal was encountered, resulting in dirtier coal, a finer coal and an ever increasing ash in the shipped product. All this demanded a more efficient ash removal process for the fine coal fraction. In 1971, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency were pushing for the now stringent sulphur emission limits at our power plants. The Greenwich Mine coal reserves contained large quantities of 3.5 to 4% sulphur along with some low sulphur reserves. It was, therefore, essential that any new plant have the capability of efficient sulphur removal to meet the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency required limits. To meet these limits our design would have to be capable of producing a product of 2.0% sulphur or less.

The Rio Piedras Alignment Section 7 of the Tren Urbano is currently being constructed beneath a historic commercial section of San Juan. Different portions of the section are being constructed using open cut, cut-and-cover, New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM), and as tacked drift mined support system. The combination of complex geology, low ground cover, and several innovative construction methods present many challenges to the ground control program. Mining and construction sequences were first developed to minimize ground movements and risk of damage to structures. A unique compensation-grouting program was developed to improve the ground, limit settlement, and recover settlements incurred due to mining.

In the post-World War II years, metals analysts and statisticians have tracked the demand for metals in line with changes in Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) industrial production (IP) growth rates, Williamson said. This was because the correlation between IP growth and metal demand was reasonable. "However, the correlation was exaggerated," he said. During times of expanding IP growth, metal demand increased at a faster proportional rate than IP growth. This was probably due to industry restocking in anticipation of growing demand at the start of each economic cycle. Conversely, metal demand would slacken at a greater rate than would be suggested by negative IP growth as industry destocked to reduce costs. Nonetheless, he said, a reasonable correlation could be painted between IP growth over the longer term and metal demand. "Yet, although this correlation has stood well since the last world war, it has been based on the fact that the bulk of the world's IP growth stemmed from the industrialized countries of the western world, lately including Japan," Williamson said. The so-called "developing world" had been of little consequence. The Soviet Union and other communist bloc countries were deemed to be closed, self-contained entities that, for each metal, would either be net exporters or importers, he said. These quantities would be used by analysts to calculate the overall supply/demand equation for the western world only and to deduce whether a commodity was in shortage or surplus. It is now believed that this method of projecting total world supply and demand for raw materials is outdated, Williamson said. It does not take into account the worldwide political changes that have occurred since the collapse of communism and the revitalization of China. "It is no longer appropriate to assess global balances for raw materials on the basis of three economic blocs," he said, including the western world, developing world and communist bloc. Rather, global balances need to be projected on a global basis. In this regard, since the collapse of communism and the removal of many other totalitarian regimes, capitalist forces are attempting to satisfy the expectations of the great mass of the world's poorer people, Williamson said. Such people, usually located in Asia, Africa and Latin America, have aspired to the same standard of living as people living in western Europe, North America and Japan. "Now, with free market forces at work, their aspirations will start to be met." Consequently, the demand for metals and other raw materials will now rise at a much faster rate. The production of raw materials has to keep pace with rising IP in the developed world. It will also have to keep pace with the demands associated with the rising expectations of increasing populations in the developing world, as well as from within the old communist bloc countries.

This paper defines the elements of a basic economic model for decision making when considering a methane drainage system for an underground coal mine. A drainage system entails significant capital and operating expense; hence the decision to utilize drainage must be made carefully. The model outlines the basic structure of decision making and considers the costs and benefits when the methane is marketed and when the methane is vented to the atmosphere. The effects on mine safety and the dust levels in the mine are also considered, both in a general format and as economic variables. Sources of information for executing this decision making are provided for an actual mine decision.

Increasing environmental awareness leads to a reflection on the consequences of a non-appropriate use of mining resources. In this sense the determination of the mining requirements for the building industry is the necessary prerequisite to activate planning in mining according to the principles of environmental sustainability. Experience shows that there is a relationship between the production of buildings in relation to the shape of the city and the resulting demand for minerals. The increasingly urgent demand for maintenance and restructuring by existing buildings will stretch further the demand for minerals with an excessive, no longer sustainable withdrawal, which will lead to focussing greater attention on environmental policies oriented to the use of alternative materials including materials from recycling. It is pointed out moreover that the joint action of land use planning and mining planning leads to interesting applications that have significant repercussions on the environment.

The continuous flow, horizontal drum blender has dynamic properties which may be described by the same type of equations which often arise in electrical filter analysis. Furthermore, the equations may be readily solved by the same techniques used in electrical control analysis. For this reason the blender model developed is termed an "Electric Analog", although strictly speaking it is a mathematical model. Presentation of the dynamic performance of the blender as an electrical (or mathematical) model is desirable for several reasons. The model can be of assistance in correlating performance data with equipment design parameters. The model 'can be used with other process equipment models for simulation of an entire plant operation or in stability studies. In addition, the model may be useful in providing insight into the actual blending mechanism, or it may suggest a similar method of analysis for other closely allied equipment.

Media mills operate by having energy transferred to the media which in turn grinds the feed material in a packed bed. Regardless of the mill type, the media energy density per unit surface area is constant. Since for optimum grinding conditions, both peak pressures and particle number of the bed depth are constant, the frequency of energy input is inversely proportional to feed size. As the particle size decreases the voles energy density increases linearly necessitating cooling in stirred mills. Grinding finer particles therefore, requires moving from rotary to vibratory mills, and the finest, the stirred mills.

Following on from the successful completion of three exploration programs and the discovery of two new inactive Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) deposits within New Zealand?s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Neptune is now poised to take the next step from explorer to developer. Neptune considers that commercialization of SMS deposits represents the future of the mining industry, providing a new source of metals to the world economy, and enabling host countries to benefit from this new industry. Neptune recognizes that marine biodiversity is among the greatest treasures of New Zealand. The geological isolation, range and complexity of habitats, and a number of major ocean currents that influence New Zealand have created diverse marine communities. Neptune, recognizing both the environmental importance of marine biodiversity and the value it provides to all New Zealanders has made commitments to ensure sustainable development. There are many unanswered questions regarding how the marine environment may be affected by SMS development, however best practice environmental management is a key aspect of the Company?s approach to our activities and the code for ?Environmental Management of Marine Mining? prepared by the IMMS has played a part in this approach. Neptune has close relationships with the scientific community to ensure that appropriate environmental strategies and plans are developed in order to minimize the effects of our activities on the environment.

The preparation of coal is essentially the same for export as it is for the domestic market. The big difference, I would say, is that, while coal for certain domestic uses (utilities, for instance) need not always be of the highest quality, as long as it is uniform, the buyer of coal for export invariably demands a well-prepared, top-quality product. And he is willing to pay for it, as long as he knows what he is buying. This is where quality control enters the picture. The day is long past since the export market was the dumping ground for coals which could not be sold on the domestic market. Today, the export buyer wants American coals not so much for a price but for the necessity of blending the American coals with foreign coals to achieve the desired chemical and/or physical characteristics, To blend intelligently, he must know in detail what are the qualities of the coals to be blended. Sampling and chemical analysis facilities at the piers provide the information on the coals exported, These facilities are maintained for the export buyer by independent laboratories; however, in one instance, the buyer operates his own laboratory. With very few exceptions, and Clinchfield?s Moss No. 3 mid-volatile coal is one, cargoes shipped overseas are loaded as blends of two or more coals. Up to now, foreign requirements have not been too clearly defined; therefore, shippers must be prepared to blend mixtures of the desired combination. Successful blending requires an accurate knowledge of the coals shipped. And this makes it necessary for the coal producer to maintain his own control laboratory.

Poor plant start-up performance is usually blamed on poor design and unsatisfactory equipment. But, in most cases, the real cause of poor performance is inadequate preparation for operations and maintenance. Inadequate maintenance preparation, unlike inadequate operations preparation, will not immediately manifest itself in a new plant. However, not taking advantage of the window of opportunity afforded a new plant to organize the maintenance operation ensures that the new equipment honeymoon is unexpectedly short. Also, once a plant has entered a “breakdown mode,” it is extremely difficult to turn around.
