The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig is an enhanced gravity concentrator capable of separating fine minerals and/or minerals with relatively small differences in specific gravity. Since the first commercial installation at the Renison Bell tin mine in Australia, development and improvement in hardware has continued, including the introduction of the high-capacity J1800model Kelsey Jig. The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig is widely applicable to fine mineral recovery duties, with key application areas including mineral sands, tin, gold and nickel. Other areas of application include: iron ore, base metals, chromite, PGMs, soil remediation and scheelite. A brief history of the process is given, followed by a detailed discussion of the water granulation system and the methods used to transport and dewater the granulate. Environmental advantages of handling slag away from the blast furnace by water granulation are included.

As part of a continuing study of diesel exhaust aerosol characteristics, the Bureau of Mines has applied Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) model source apportionment analysis to evaluate a size selective sampling method for determining the separate diesel exhaust and coal dust aerosol concentrations in a diesel equipped coal mine. Size selective sampling was used under the premise that diesel exhaust aerosol dominates the submicrometer aerosol size range, while most of the mineral dust aerosol is greater than 1 m. A micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) was used as the size selective sampling method. Concurrent samples of mine aerosol were collected using a dichotomous, respirable aerosol sampler. This sampler separated the fine and coarse size portions of its sample at 0.7 m. Trace element concentrations for in-mine aerosol sources and the dichotomous samples used by the CMB model were measured using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis. The CMB analysis, applied to both the fine and coarse fractions of the respirable mine aerosol, yielded the mass concentration contributed to each by diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol sources. The MOUDI size distribution data were analyzed using nonlinear regression to parameterize the fine and coarse fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each fraction from both coal dust and diesel aero- sol sources. For the diesel mine visited, analysis of the MOUDI samples yielded a value for the fraction of the fine aerosol attributable to coal dust of 15[]7% fine fraction coal from analysis of the MOUDI samples versus 25[]4% from the CMB analysis. The remainder of the fine aerosol in the mine was diesel exhaust aerosol. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for such sampling. After correcting for the presence of coal dust in the fine aerosol fraction, analysis of the MOUDI size distributions yielded estimates of respirable mineral and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations that were accurate to with-in 10% of values determined by the CMB apportionment.

Los Pelambres, 200 km north of Santiago, Chile, is the latest in a series of mega-projects developed in this part of the world. While most of its predecessors are spread over open desert, the Los Pelambres mine is nestled inside a narrow alpine valley high in the Andean Mountains. To handle the daunting task of transporting the mined copper ore more than 12 km and 1,400 vertical meters downhill to the concentrator plant, a gigantic belt conveyor system (capacity of 8700 mtph, 1800 mm wide ST 7800 steel cord belt, 2.5m diameter pulleys, an elaborate braking system including a mechanical failsafe and large reducers with a total installed drive power of 25,000 kW) has been employed. Many of these components have pushed the limits of conventional belt conveyor design.

In March of 1978 the first set of Angular Spiral Liners utilized in grate discharge ball mills for wet grinding was put into service in the San Flanuel Concentrator of Flagma Copper Company. The use of these liners has decreased grinding media consumption by 19.2% and grinding energy consumption by 15.8%. In addition a 1.1% increase in grinding throughput is being realized through the use of the system. This paper describes the Angular Spiral Lining System and reviews the test program at the San Manuel Arizona Concentrator. Operating parameters are discussed in addition to the current testing program to futher optimize the system.

In the minerals industry today, the ?low hanging fruit? that once existed to debottleneck production and improve recovery, while meeting market needs for quality in mineral processing operations, are more and more difficult to find. Systematic methods for establishing plant mass flow, recovery, operational efficiency and control strategy in context with customer specifications provides the necessary insight and confidence for plant operators to prioritize improvement projects in order to maximize return on investment (ROI) for the site. The evaluation of aggregate and industrial mineral processing plants requires the following steps when projecting cost saving opportunities: collecting background data, conducting a base-line evaluation, analyzing specific unit-operation performance, defining investment options, prioritizing the selected improvement opportunities and the implementing process changes. The following paper describes the approach and challenges of developing an improvement plan for a dry and wet mineral processing operation.

In the construction of recent subsurface projects, particularly mined openings and transit systems, it has been apparent that final costs were often greater than first expected. Because many overruns result from alleged differing site conditions, there was reason to suspect that pre-bid geotechnical investigations were inadequate for predicting subsurface geology. In 1982, nine federal agencies involved in constructing underground facilities funded the National Academy of Sciences' U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology (USNC/TT) in an effort to evaluate and clarify the relationship between geological knowledge and construction costs. That committee formed the special Subcommittee on Geological Site Investigations, which spent more than two years studying underground projects by examining contract documents and geologic reports, making site visits, and interviewing owners, designers and contractors. The study ultimately encompassed 84 mined tunnels and chambers and three deep shafts in the United States and eastern Canada. Data collected on geologic exploration, design and construction were analyzed and conclusions reached concerning whether and how site investigations need to be improved. The results of the study are published in two volumes by the National Academy of Sciences. Due to the recent completion date of the main report, it was not possible to prepare a summary for inclusion in the RETC Proceedings. The Office of Coal Research has been supporting the development of processes for producing synthetic pipeline gas from coal since 1964. .Some of this work has also been jointly supported by the American Gas Association. The work has progressed through laboratory investigation, to bench scale, to pilot plant. It was far from a crash program, generally being fund-limited.. As of one year ago, we had reached the following position: 1. The Institute of Gas Technology HYGAS. process pilot plant in Chicago, Illinois, was in the process of being finally completed. This plant is designed to produce about 1,500,000 cubic feet of pipeline-quality gas per day from 75 tons of coal. 2. The Consolidation Coal Company, CO2 Acceptor Process pilot plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, was well._ on its way to completion. This plant, designed primarily for lignite and subbituminous coals, has about one-half the design capacity of the HYGAS plant. Additionally, the initial construction did not provide for cleanup and methanation; only the preliminary synthesis gas is produced. 3. The Bituminous Coal Research, Inca, BI-GAS pilot plant was in a preliminary design stage. A site had been selected near Homer City, Pennsylvania, to build this plant, planned to consume 120 tons of coal per day. Meanwhile, as you are all well aware, a natural gas shortage was developing in this country. Much has been published about it, so I will not. bother you with further details. The Picher Mining District, located principally in north-eastern Oklahoma, was one of the world's largest lead-zinc mining areas during its 55 year life. The field covers an area of approximately 72 square miles (186 km.-); an estimated 1.6 x [103 yds3 of material (1.22 x 103m3)] worth in excess of one billion dollars, has been mined. Mining activities were typified by surface exploratory drilling identifying ore distribution and extension of underground workings to the lead and zinc deposits outlined. Exploration holes were either left unplugged or plugged at the surface with a section of a telephone pole. Low grade ore and waste rock were discarded in mined out portions of drifts. These waste piles containing pyrite and marquisette were left underground and oxidized during the many years of active mining. Upon cessation of mining activities in the mid-1960's, the drifts and shafts of the abandoned workings began to flood as the cone of depression filled in, leading to the dissolution of the oxidized sulfides and the formation of large volumes of acid mine water in the mined out openings. The resulting poor quality water, with high concentrations of cadmium, iron, lead and zinc, began discharging at the surface in 1979. Contamination of the underlying aquifer supplying local residents was first detected on a localized scale in 1980. The present surface water and ground water contamination have lead to the area being classified as one of the top ten hazardous waste sites in the U.S. by the EPA under the superfund program.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) performed a feasibility analysis for the purpose of either modifying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) fa¬cility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple op¬erational and performance concerns have been identified. A com¬prehensive engineering study was conducted in 1995 to: 1) Qualify and quantify operational concerns, 2) Evaluate possible alternatives, and 3) Recommend an optimum solution. Multiple system modification and/or replacement scenarios were evaluated with associated cost estimates developed. The study considered replacement with either centrifugal or axial fans. Multiple fan duties are required at the WIPP. Therefore, Variable Frequency Drives and Inlet Vane Controls (IVC) were investigated for centrifugal fans. In-flight adjustable blades were investigated for axial fans. The study indicated that replacing the existing system with two double-width, double-inlet centrifugal fans equipped with IVCs was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of: 1) ensuring the required operational readiness, and 2) improving system performance. The WIPP is currently planning to replace the first fan in 1997.

Merrill-Crowe is the primary process used for the concentration and purification of silver in a cyanide solution. The Langmuir Adsorption model for silver recovery in a cyanide solution was used for the study. The maximum adsorption capacity was 6.19 mmol/g for silver. This model properly adjusts the experimental results of the adsorption equilibrium with high correlation coefficients, which also favors the formation of a single layer of molecules adsorbed for the silver in the electrocoagulation- generated species. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS were estimated, and it was found that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. For the kinetic study, the Lagergren second-order equation was used to study the adsorption speed. To characterize the solids coming from the electrocoagulation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used; the results of this study suggest that silver is present in aluminite, hydroniumjarosite, and alunogen.

Finite-difference digital computer models can be used to evaluate the effects of proposed mine dewatering and depressuring operations on ground-water aquifer systems. The effects of proposed dewatering and depressuring operations can be simulated for both underground and open-pit mining in confined and unconfined aquifer systems. Design of dewatering and depressuring well arrays to accommodate proposed mining operations in a variety of hydrogeologic settings can be accomplished through judicious application of well-documented and tested computer programs that are widely available from government agencies and universities. The speed and flexibility of the computer models can provide an economical means for comparison of alternative mining plans, and can be used to determine the optimum mine plan with respect to dewatering requirements.

The paper will describe a number of developments and innovations now in use in microtunnelling machines. These include the use of fuzzy logic steering systems, the proven ability to successfully undertake complex curved microtunnel drives, the ability to complete ultra long drives using microtunnelling techniques, and machines with access to the face of the machine from inside the machine. The ability to tunnel in relatively hard rock utilizing a rock head with back loaded cutters changeable from inside the microtunnel machine and the ability to utilize microtunnel machines in multi modes, such as hard rock mode, “open” mode, EPB mode, and slurry mode with the same base machine again with access to the face of the machine will be described. In addition, the latest computer technology gives the operator “full visualization” of machine functions together with the ability to data log machine operating parameters. Reference will be made to a number of projects worldwide recently completed or under way where these innovations have successfully been utilized.

Since the introduction of shield supports in 1975, safety and production in U.S. longwall faces have improved considerably. Many faces had a daily production of up to 8,000-10,000 tons and productivity reached 600 tons per man-shift. But a longwall face requires expensive equipment which slows down the growth rate of the percentage of longwall production. Among the equipment cost the shield support accounts for 50-60%, a very large proportion. Therefore, it will have a large impact on the growth of longwall mining in the U.S. to reduce the support cost (1).

Interwest Mining Company has been collecting geologic data within the last decade in preparation for underground mining of extensive coal reserves in its Bridger Coal property in southwestern Wyoming. During a preliminary data collection program in 2000, Interwest Mining completed geologic investigations, including surface mapping, drilling, aerial photography, rock testing, and limited groundwater investigations. Core from 12 exploration boreholes in the area of interest was tested to determine the mechanical properties of the coal seam and the immediate roof and floor for evaluation of the feasibility of underground mining. Geologic investigations identified the presence of one 7-to-17-ft-thick coal seam throughout the reserve under 1400 ft of cover. During a geotechnical feasibility study in 2002, the authors reviewed available data while completing comparative analyses identifying critical deficiencies in these data. The study projected moderate-to-difficult mining conditions, considering the weak nature of near-seam strata and depth of cover, and thus recommended limiting the longwall reserves to an overburden depth of less than 900 ft. These shallow remaining reserves were located at depths within regional mining experience to justify longwall mining methods. Based on a critical examination of available data, Bridger proceeded with more detailed data collection to improve understanding of the depositional and structural setting of the reserve, hydrogeologic conditions, overburden strength, and premining stress conditions. Additional data was collected during 2003 and 2004 field programs. Since 2003, Bridger has had the opportunity to observe ground behavior in a series of up to 1200-1600-ft- long rectangular openings created during highwall mining. These narrow unsupported openings remained stable in the short term in large areas but the overburden subsided locally in the long-term depending on geologic and panel layout designs. These localized subsidence events allowed an examination of in-situ coal strength based on back analyses of stress. The unextracted highwall areas near Ramp 17 provided an ideal location to access the underground reserves using a 6-entry set of mains. The existing north-south oriented longwall layout for the Bridger Coal was selected by Bridger to maximize resource recovery from the D41 reserves while considering operational and geotechnical constraints. At 45-degrees deviation from preexisting joints and mild horizontal stress field, this orientation was considered beneficial for overall stability while using both sets of joints for facilitating the caving process. The present layout utilizes pillars on 80- to 90- by 200-ft centers, 17-ft entry spans and 750-ft wide longwall panels (Figure 1). Gate pillars are on wide spacings and are intended to act as abutment-abutment pillars to limit strata deformation over the gateroads during longwall mining.

The PDM3600 and PDM3700 are two closely related person-wearable dust monitors manufactured by Thermo Fisher Scientific. Both are based on tapered element oscillating microbalance technology and provide nearly real-time, mass-based readings of respirable dust concentrations. From a monitoring perspective, the primary difference between the models is the PDM3600 has an integrated cap lamp with attached inlet, while the PDM3700 has no cap lamp and a revised inlet attaches to the worker’s lapel. Using coals of varied origin and employing a wide range of concentrations, side-by-side measurements from these instruments were collected under controlled laboratory conditions and then compared. By use of ordinary least squares and weighted least squares regression methods, followed by mixed model analysis, results suggest there is no statistically significant or practical difference in instrument performance. The two monitors are equivalent for the field dust concentration measurements for which they were designed.

While preparing this paper, I soon realized I had a problem in defining what injuries should be classified as "personal." Admittedly, in some cases, falls of persons, sprains and strains, pulling and pushing injuries, and back injuries may have been caused by the individual. But, I believe the number of injuries directly attributed to an individual's carelessness is relatively small in comparison to the total number of injuries in those categories. For discussion purposes, the injuries most often considered to be personal, that is, caused by individuals are those classified as back injuries. My paper will be devoted to back injuries because this category represents the greatest number of injuries occurring in coal mining. A man's best friends are his wife, his back, and his dog. The back, however, has a reputation of not being as faithful as his other two friends.1 "Industrial back injury is one of the major occupational health problems plaguing industry to- day. According to national surveys, back injury accounts for more lost time than any other occupational injury and costs companies thousands of dollars in compensation, medical fees and over- time pay."2 A study conducted by USA Today found that back ailments afflict an estimated 75 million Americans, have totally disabled about 2.5 million adults, lead to as many as 200,000 required surgeries each year, are a leading cause of absenteeism and disability, are the second leading cause of hospitalization, are responsible for 18 million doctor visits a year and cost about 93 million work-days annually. The cost to industry is estimated at $14 billion a year.3 During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, this effort has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. Back injuries should be of the utmost concern to everyone here today. I don't need to tell you what the incidence rate is for back injuries, nor will I use any statistics to inform you of the incidence rate for the coal mine industry or any specific mine. It is only important to know that the number of back injuries is excessive. Back in- juries resulting from lifting have been and continue to be one of the most constant and undiminishing problems in the occupational environment. The fact is, we use our backs to per- form work that the back was not designed to do. Historically, manual materials handling related accidents have consistently accounted for the largest percentage of all industrial accidents. In fact, over 25 percent of all industrial accidents are related to handling of materials.4 In underground coal mining operations, material handling accidents account for even larger percentage of lost time injuries. In 1983, for example, they accounted for 34 percent of all lost time injuries and 32.6 percent of all non-lost time injuries. 5 I want to use one example of a task that will illustrate what I have just said: the building of a concrete block stopping. Each solid concrete block will weigh from 60 to 70 pounds. To build a stop- ping 6 feet high and 20 feet wide will take approximately 80 blocks. On the average, these 80 blocks will be handled at least four times from loading into the conveyance for transportation to being placed while constructing the stopping. Introduction Lyon, with 1.1 million inhabitants, is the third largest city in France after Paris and Marseille. It is a lively industrial centre. Lyon lies at the intersection of many transport routes and at the fluence of Rhone and Saone. Like all large cities, Lyon is attempting to alleviate inner city traffic problems by constructing a metro. Metro construction in Lyon began with tunnels built by cut and cover methods along the streets. Deep diaphram walls, which were back anchored and toed into imperveous strata, formed the excavation walls. It is a very economic and simple method. However during the construction period, it has the disavantage of strangling urban life for several years. It is therefore increasingly being replaced by subsurface tunnelling methods. As it was decided to build the metro tunnel between the Guillotiere and St. Jean stations, and thus cross under the Rhone and Saone, the client, Semaly, put the contract out for a competitive tender in which the general parameters were defined. Line, level and construction method were left to the contractor. There was an extensive examination of the tenders, during which reference projects from competitors in Japan were visited, as well as in Germany. Finally the consortium of Dragages, Campenon Bernard, Colas and Hochtief was awarded the contract to drive this tunnel section with an hydro-shield and an extruded steel fibre concrete lining, a Hochtief design.
