The brecciated dolostone-hosted (Mississippi Valley-type) and associated shale-hosted stratiform Pb-Zn deposits at McArthur River occur adjacent to a major syndepositional fault, the Emu fault. Base-metal zoning, mineral parageneses, and Pb and stable isotope ratios indicate that both types of deposits formed contemporaneously from metalliferous brines that flowed into the host sediments from the Emu fault. Derivation of brines from underlying evaporitic sediments is suggested. Geochemical evidence indicates that the mechanism of ore formation was sulfate-reduction coupled with oxidation of organic matter. The textural relationships of stratiform sulfide mineralization to diagenetic dolomite concretions, chert blebs, volcanic glass shards, and inter-ore breccia beds, indicate that the reactions proceeded diagenetically within about 100 m of the sediment/water interface.

The processes involved in the concentration of magnetite ore with process water as the aqueous medium can have a strong influence on the surface properties of the magnetite particles. In this study, different leaching methods, as well as zeta potential measurements, were used to examine the major easily accessible ions on the particle surfaces and their effect on the surface charge. The results show that the enrichment of elements on the surface of the particles appears early in the refinement process. Ca was enriched up to 15 times and Si up to 50 times compared to what pore water alone would have given. The leaching experiments also showed that the addition of water glass increased the surface enrichment of Si and that the collector might hinder desorption of Ca. An alkali leaching method was evaluated, which showed that Si was much more enriched than S and Cl. Zeta potential measurements on synthetic magnetite particles showed that process water resulted in zeta potentials different from the potentials measured for these particles in aqueous calcium and silicate solutions. Therefore, it is important to consider the complexity of the process water when making predictions about the properties of the particle surfaces in the final magnetite concentrate, which most studies do not. Zeta potential measurements were also used to rule out a strong influence from organic matter in the process water on the magnetite zeta potential.

The influence of selective chemical dispersants on the hydrocycloning of a copper ore slurry is illustrated. In the % solids and slurry feed rate ranges associated with industrial practice, desirable changes in both d50 and Sharpness Index values of classification were measured with the use of chemical as compared to tests with no chemical usage.

"Una de las enfermedades más extendidas en la industria minera es la pérdida de audición inducida por el ruido. La exposición de los mineros a niveles de ruido superiores a los niveles de exposición permisibles resulta en la pérdida de audición de aproximadamente el 80% de los mineros del carbón a la edad de jubilarse. En este contexto, el Instituto Nacional para la Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH, por sus siglas en inglés) está realizando investigaciones para desarrollar controles de ruido aplicados a los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos. Este método de minado es usado para extraer la mitad de la producción nacional de carbón subterránea. A partir de las mediciones en campo, se determinó en investigaciones anteriores que los componentes dominantes que generan sonido en el cizallador de un sistema de tajeos largos son los dos tambores de corte utilizados para extraer el carbón. Debido a las dimensiones y complejidad de los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos, el proyecto NIOSH desarrolló un modelo de elementos finitos validado del tambor de corte para utilizarlo en la predicción del sonido generado por este debido a las fuerzas de excitación experimentadas en las operaciones subterráneas. Este mismo modelo se utilizará para desarrollar controles de ingeniería para el ruido del tambor. Las fuerzas de excitación surgen de la interacción de la broca de corte y el carbón, y se transmiten al tambor de corte a través de los sujetadores de brocas. Debido a las condiciones adversas en el frente y la falta de instrumentación aprobada para uso subterráneo, las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón no han sido evaluadas anteriormente. Para este fin, NIOSH, en colaboración con la Universidad Tecnológica de Michigan, desarrolló una broca instrumentada autónoma con seguridad intrínseca para medir estas fuerzas. Este artículo describe el desarrollo de la broca instrumentada y la medición de las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón en tres minas. "The issue of mine worker fatigue is as complex as it is understudied. Generally, worker fatigue lies somewhere on a continuum between psychology and physiology, which makes the measurement and management of it difficult with no easy solutions for operators or workers. Answers to even basic questions remain elusive—such as what is fatigue, how is it measured, and how can organizational resources reduce fatigue—and answers seem to present no single, clear path to action for the health and safety of the worker. This manuscript supplements the growing body of interest in the problems of fatigue in the mining industry by reviewing some of what is known about worker fatigue in general and in the mining industry in particular. The material covered here includes basic topics of the hows and whys of worker fatigue; an overview of fatigue models, findings, and evidence-based solutions with a focus on mining; and potential future directions aimed at mitigating miner fatigue. INTRODUCTION “It is recommended that the whole fatigue test problem be stated in a form the nature of which may be indicated by the following suggestions: that the term fatigue be absolutely banished from precise scientific discussion, and consequently that attempts to obtain a fatigue test be abandoned [emphasis added].” – Bernard Muscio, Pioneer Australian Philosopher and Industrial Psychologist, in a 1921 Report to the Cambridge Industrial Fatigue Research Board Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work, or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetative duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising. On the one hand, mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation, and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a “cookie-cutter” approach. On the other hand, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present alltogether. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining."

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). Epithermal gold exploration in the last decade has developed useful models for exploring new ore districts in Oregon. In Eastern Oregon, disseminated gold occurs in epithermal deposits that have been pervasively silicified and brecciated. Many gold prospects staked since 1980 are in fluvial and lacustrine sandstone and conglomerate deposits. Clay alteration products and disseminated pyrite may be present. Vein filling calcite and thin to thick quartz veins are common. Late stage quartz forms pseudomorphs after calcite in many deposits. Arsenic, mercury and gold are geochemically anomolous but silver is usually not. The epithermal deposits are located in part of the Deer Butte Formation or equivalent units. Exploration criteria include the presence of Deer Butte Formation or correlative units and NW structures cut by N-S basin and range structures.

The following report details the successful construction of Contract 2A of the Three Rivers Water Quality Management Program, Intrenchment Creek Combined Sewer Overflow Conveyance System, in DeKalb County for the City of Atlanta, Georgia. The contract required construction of approximately 2878 m (9443 ft) of tunnel bored to an initial diameter of 7.95 m (26 ft 1 in), with provisions to concrete line those portions designated by the engineer to a finished internal diameter of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in). Flanking the tunnel are two shafts. The upstream shaft was excavated to a nominal diameter of 4.87 m (16 ft) to accommodate a finished internal diameter of 3.66 m (12 ft). This shaft required a transition boot fully concrete lined to final dimensions of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) wide, 13.72 m (45 ft) long, and varying in height from 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) to 12.80 m (42 ft). Associated work necessary to complete the contractual obligations included installation of 22.86 m (75 ft) of cut-and-cover box culvert, 484 m (1589 ft) of open-cut sewer installation in sizes ranging from 0.30 m (12 in) to 1.68 m (5 ft 6 in), one river crossing, 137.46 m (451 ft) of monolithic concrete trapezoidal channel, and installation of 19125 cu m (25000 cu yd) of select fill material compacted and graded to finished contours. The downstream shaft was excavated to a minimum diameter of 12.04 m (39 ft 6 in) and concrete lined to a finished internal diameter of 10.67 m (35 ft). Requirements here included installation of a complete pumping station with all mechanical, electrical, and structural elements necessary for dewatering the tunnel through the controlled use of four 250 hp submersible pumps discharging into the facilities of the Intrenchment Creek Water Pollution Plant. This paper presents the results of an experimental study undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of using silica sand as a grinding media in stirred ball mills for ultra-fine coal grinding. Laboratory batch as well as bench scale continuous tests indicate that the use of silica sand can reduce the energy consumption by 50% and more over its steel media counter-part. Moreover, this approach has been found to eliminate the disadvantages observed with grinding using steel media such as high replacement cost, contamination of coal through media wear, greater degree of coal oxidation due to higher slurry temperature and greater level of noise dissipation. Additionally, coal-sand attrition system reduces the manpower time required which is often spent towards cleaning and storing of steel media in inert atmosphere to avoid rust and corrosion problems.

Vertical hoisting of materials using hoists and skips is common in the Mining Industry. These systems have a number of drawbacks, one being limited hoisting capacity at medium depths. FKC-Lake Shore and Metso Flexowell have been developing and installing vertical belts for medium depth shaft applications for many years, progressively going deeper whilst increasing belt capacity. The latest development from Metso the Pocketlift® belt advances this technology allowing higher tonnages to be lifted from greater depths. The design, manufacture, installation and operational experience of a 1818 tonnes capacity, 273 meters vertical lift Pocketlift® system at the White County Coal Pattiki 2 mine is the subject of this work.

"Grout backfill strategy for a particular subsurface concrete tunnel (~4.9km long, 3.5m in diameter, carrying 20” gas pipeline) was based on achieving 1:100 slope of the fill in order to progressively fill the tunnel, in a series of 350m section. Grout rheology, particularly its non-Newtonian and thixotropic behavior, determines the final fill slope for given backfill strategy. The objective of this study was to simulate the two-phase grout mix backfill process using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and determine the slope of the fill to validate and optimize the backfill strategy. Three dimensional CFD study showed that for a 500m long tunnel section with a single injection point of grout, given its rheology, it will likely keep flowing without filling the 500m section height wise. Design optimization for filling was carried out using two dimensional studies to make the backfill process “slope independent” by incorporating a 2.5m high bulkhead at ~1,000m. INTRODUCTION As part of a gas field development a 20” onshore gas pipeline is required from the landfall site to the processing terminal some 8km inland. At the landfall site the gas pipeline is routed in a ~5km underground tunnel underneath a bay. For operational reasons and planning consents as well as to mitigate environmental impact based on an environmental impact study, once the gas pipeline and the associated services and spares have been installed, the subsurface gas tunnel will be fully grouted. There will be no permanent access to the tunnel after construction is completed and the site compounds have been reinstated once works are complete. One of the key requirements is that “full grouting of the tunnel” is desired. The grouting material used is a non-Newtonian and thixotropic fluid mixture of bentonite, cement, plasticizer, retarder/stabilizer and water. The tunnel is filled progressively in 350m sections using a combination of existing and new pipework assuming the grout rheology will yield a fill slope of 1:100 in a 350m section. The proposed grouting system used one pump at the grouting compound to pump the grout into the tunnel using the existing tunneling pipework. For the longer runs a second booster pump was used in series to pump the grout to its final discharge location. The filling process is controlled via a system of flow meters, pressure transmitters and a tunnel CCTV system."

Blast engineers have been taking advantage of image-based rock fragmentation analysis methods for the past 3 decades to estimate rock size distributions. These methods utilize a wide range of image segmentation techniques, from manual to fully-automated, to delineate the edges of rocks in images. Rock delineation results are then converted to physical rock sizes (and percentage passing curves) by scaling the image pixels to correspond to physical measurements. The size scaling process is critical for acquiring physical measurements, but specific to the limitations of different applications. This article starts by presenting a shovel bucket-based fragmentation analysis system, where scaling is done using the known width of the shovel bucket within the image. Next, it describes methods that use pictures captured by digital cameras with scaling reference objects in the view. Finally, the article presents a method that uses three-dimensional imaging to capture images without the need for scaling reference objects. A portable device which utilizes a three-dimensional imaging method is proposed, and compared with the other methods. The proposed solution combines the generated three-dimensional points with the delineated rock boundaries in the image to reconstruct the surface, and generate accurate rock size estimates and percentage passing rock size distributions. System operation is described and its accuracy and performance are discussed for various scenarios. It is shown that since the device does not require a physical object for scaling reference, it is free from the limitations of other methods, and can be applied for automatic rock size measurement from various sources such as mining shovels, loaders, crushers, stockpiles, haul truck beds, and conveyor belts.

"The drum agglomeration of nickel laterite and gold ores has been optimized through the design of experiments (DOE) using a Taguchi L16 (45) orthogonal array to determine the optimum conditions for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines. The effects of controllable operating factors including moisture content (nickel laterite ore: 34-37%; gold ore: 7-10%), retention time (2-3.5 min), drum speed (15-45% critical speed), drum load (nickel laterite ore: 8-32 %; gold ore: 6-22%) and acid concentration (150-600 g/L) on the performance of the agglomeration process were studied.For nickel laterite ore, maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) occurred under the following conditions: drum load (23.7%), moisture (36.5%), time (3 min), drum speed (30% critical speed) and acid concentration (150 g/L). Under the studied nickel laterite ore conditions, the most effective parameters for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines were found to be drum load and acid concentration, respectively. Drum speed had a statistically significant effect on minimizing the amount of fines. Maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) for gold ore occurred under the following conditions: drum load (19.3%), moisture (8.5%), time (2 min 15 s) and drum speed (40% critical). The most significant factors for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines for gold ore were found to be drum load, time and moisture.IntroductionSeveral heap leach operations have experienced problems in terms of poor recovery due to percolation issues caused by low-grade complex ores, tailings and clayey deposits. Poor percolation can lead to low metal extraction due to solution channeling or the development of impermeable/dead zones within the heap (Dhawan et al., 2012; Kappes, 2005). Improper heap building practices such as the use of loose agglomerates and inadequate attention toward the presence of clay minerals have been among the main reasons for percolation issues. During the transport of ore material, severe segregation of the material can occur. To overcome percolation problems, a major improvement was made through the introduction of agglomeration prior to ore placement. If the ore particles and agglomerates are of similar size, segregation can be avoided to a great extent (Dhawan et al., 2013; Kinard and Schweizer, 1987; McClelland and van Zyl, 1988). Agglomeration improves the uniform percolation of solution through ore heaps and is applicable to many ores, wastes and milled tailings (Bouffard, 2005; Dhawan et al., 2013). Manning and Kappes (2005) reported agglomeration/ stacking accounts for ~14% of the total heap leaching operating cost. The cost of binder is a primary contributor toward the total cost. Also, the lack of consistent quality control tests for agglomerate often leads to operational problems. The details are mentioned elsewhere (Dhawan et al., 2013). Considering the significant contribution of the agglomeration/stacking step toward the total heap leach operating cost, it is appropriate to study the agglomeration behavior and its optimization for two different ores. The reason to study the same parameters for different ores is the fact that significant variability in the agglomeration behavior of different ores has been reported to exist in industrial operations."

The fundamental error associated to the sampling of heterogeneous ore particles is unavoidable and can only be minimized by an adequate selection of the sample mass and/or size reduction of the sample before division into sub samples for testing or assaying. The preparation of ore batches to carry out the mineral processing evaluation of an ore is a sampling process. The fundamental error associated with the division of the ore into batches is responsible for the differences in the composition of the batches. This paper attempts by various means to assess the reproducibility of the gold content of test batches prepared from a gold ore sample. The results of the investigation shows that for fine gold grain sizes the variability in the composition of the batches is less than that predicted by Gy?s formula and that the gold grain size is a strategic information in the assessment of the gold content variability of test batches.

The adsorption of oleate at the surface of titanium dioxide from aqueous solutions was examined by Fourier transform infrared (FT -IR.) spectroscopy using a germanium internal reflection element coated with a thin film of TiO2. This thin film, with a thickness of 100-200 A, was deposited on the surface of a germanium single crystal by RFIDC magnetron reactive sputtering. It was found that significant adsorption of oleate from a 0.02-0.03 mM aqueous solution on the surface of TiO2 thin film occurs at neutral pH, from about pH=5.5 to pH=7.7. Adsorption of oleate at the surface of the amorphous TiO2 thin film appeared to be reversible, involving soap-acid dimers.

The mine manager in today's environment is faced with a wide variety of problems and challenges which must be addressed if efficient and profitable operations are to be achieved. Expansion of operations has, in many instances, resulted in inexperienced work crews, face supervisors, and superintendents. The complexities of a mining system preclude rapid movement through the learning curve for moat personnel. The management of production suffers both from this inexperience and the lack of standard procedures and methods for planning, schedul ing and analyzing production systems. The lack of visibility of information, as well as of the operations themselves, due to their remoteness, adds to the problem of production management.

Vast deposits of lignite occur in the Gulf Coast states and northern plain states. Lignite resources are cited to be over 43 billion tons in the Gulf Coast states. An additional resource of 16 billion tons are reported in North Dakota (Jackson, Smith, 1981). All lignite in the U.S. is mined at present by the open pit method. Draglines and scrapers are primarily used to remove the overburden. Bucket-wheel excavators are also being considered for new mines in the planning stages. Lignite seams are mined using front-end loaders, shovels and trucks, or Easi-miners. The depositional environment of lignite is weak sedimentary soils and rock. Ground water is often encountered within the mining depth. Surface water resulting from heavy rainfall or snow melt contributes to the problems of mining. Mining depths of up to 60 m (200 ft) are under consideration. Draglines exert additional loads on the highwalls and spoil piles. The combination of any number of these factors may cause instability of the slopes. Bearing pressure, trafficability, and settlement can also be a problem for excavation and loading equipment.

A study of coal pillar strength at the Beehive Mine in central Utah was done in the 1970s. This study was a cooperative effort by the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Mine measurements of closure at 117 points and pillar stress using 119 vibrating wire stress gauges were made during retreat mining in this room-and-pillar operation. Laboratory testing for the strength and modulus of 372 coal cylinders up 0.3 m (1 ft) in diameter and 0.6 m (2 ft) in length was also done. Two-dimensional finite element model analyses complemented the study. However, the real world of mining is three-dimensional and in consideration of the significant advances in computing power since the time of the original study, a revisit of the data seemed warranted. In this regard, a novel finite element method was used that allows for the whole-mine analysis of tabular excavations on the kilometer scale and yet enables details to be obtained at pillar walls on the meter scale. The effects of material properties variability in situ and of joints can also be taken into account. Results that compare computed two- and three-dimensional seam-level closures with mine measurements show noticeable differences; three-dimensional results are reasonable, while two-dimensional results overestimate closure by nearly a factor of two.

Rock bolting as a method of support continues to increase with applications in many other industries in addition to mining. Nevertheless, with nearly 55,000,000 roof bolts installed in coal mines alone last year, this remains as the single greatest use. While bolts have frequently supported ground where conventional timbering could not, there are relatively few design criteria; and trial-and-error procedures prevail. Furthermore, development of suitable instrumentation that is simple to install and readout, sensitive, durable, reliable, safe and economical in evaluating the effectiveness of a bolt over long periods of time lags behind. Therefore, the pull test continues to be the most popular method of evaluating the applicability of a certain type of roof bolt under specific installation conditions. At Penn State in the Department of Mining, research has been conducted for a number of years to measure bleedoff in carefully controlled laboratory experiments as well as in underground investigations.1,2,3,4 Unfortunately, most of the instrumentation developed has been primarily suitable only for research purposes, not possessing all of the aforementioned characteristics desirable for routine underground use. Other groups also have met with restricted success. Therefore, while relatively crude, the torque wrench continues to remain as the most widely used load measuring device. While both field and laboratory tests continue to be conducted, analytical analyses are attempted to discover the more important design parameters in order that more efficient anchorage might be devised.

Coal is our most abundant, low cost energy resource. Expansion of its use is being challenged due to "SO2 emission" regulation with even more restrictive legislation pending. High quality coal reserves are becoming more limited due to greater use in recent years. Aids to allow more use of coal in today's environment include beneficiation of coal before combustion and scrubbing the emissions from coal during combustion. Dow's efforts to help meet these challenges by beneficiating coal include true heavy media gravity separations with chlorinated solvents and liquid/liquid partitioning processes and "Dow Solvent Recovery Technology" to recover the solvent from product (or floats) and rejects (sinks), The objectives of the efforts to clean coal are to reduce sulfur and ash. In this paper, the solvents will be described; a general flow diagram presented; some of the results on upgrading various coals will be described, and projected costs of full-scale plants using chlorinated solvents will be compared to conventional cleaning plants.
