This paper describes the microbiology basics underlying heap and tank biooxidation of metal sulfide ores and concentrates. The primary organisms are identified and described along with the reactions they catalyze and their growth requirements. Also described is the interaction between ore leaching bacteria and the leaching environment in terms of solution chemistry, temperature, and mineral precipitation. Specific factors and agents that stimulate or inhibit growth and activity of ore bioleaching will be identified. Some of these factors are organism-specific and others are generic for microorganisms that grow under acidic conditions. Current knowledge of the limits of bioleaching in terms of dissolved ions in leach solutions, pH, and temperature will be summarized.

The residues produced during the incineration of leather scraps contain significant amount of chromium which can be recovered and reused in the tanning industry. The objective of this study is to develop a cost effective method for chromium recovery from leather ashes produced during the incineration of leather scraps using a fluidized bed incinerator. The entire process investigated involves fusion of leather ash with sodium carbonate in air to oxidise chromium to sodium chromate, leaching with distilled water to dissolve chromates, and chromium reduction from the hexavalent to trivalent state by sodium thiosulphate solution. The main factors affecting chromium extraction, such as temperature, reaction time, and sodium carbonate to leather ash ratio, were investigated. Based on the results obtained, almost 100% Cr extraction can be obtained at 700°C fusion temperature, sodium carbonate to ash weight ratio equal to 3 and retention time longer than 50 min.

On April 30, 2003, representatives of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc.(SME) met with the staff of the Division of Corporation Finance of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The meeting was held to discuss issues related to the estimation and publication of mineral resources and ore reserves. It took place in the Washington, D.C. offices of the SEC. SEC staff members included Roger Schwall, assistant director, Division of Corporation Finance; Jill Davis, senior accountant; Roger Baer, senior mining engineer; Carl Chavez, chief mining engineer; Ron Winfrey, senior petroleum engineer; and John Murphy, senior petroleum engineer. SME committee members included JM Rendu, independent consultant and chairman of the SME Committee on Resources and Reserves; Ian Douglas, manager of deposit modeling and reserve estimation with Newmont Mining; Art Graham, director and mining engineer with Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas; Larry Smith, chief geologist with AMEC Mining and Metals Consulting; and George MacDonald, vice president of exploration with Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold.

New Gold?s New Afton Mine, located 8 km (5 miles) west of Kamloops, British Columbia, is a 4.5-Mt/a (5-million stpy) block cave mine, making it the highest tonnage underground hard rock mine in Canada. The reserve is estimated at 52.5 Mt (55.9 million st) with grades of 0.65 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.93 percent copper (2012). Commercial production was achieved in July 2012 and nameplate production was achieved ahead of schedule in September 2012, with the cave breaching to surface in 2013. The mill has a SAG and a ball mill with a froth flotation circuit.

Mining is likely to be targeted by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) as one of its key enforcement targets for fiscal year 2002-2003. Identifying the mining industry as an enforcement target, coupled with an increase in enforcement activity in recent years, places each mining operation at increased risk of receiving enforcement attention. A properly developed and implemented Environmental Management System (“EMS”) tailored for your operation is invaluable in reducing the risk of incurring liability for non-compliance. At the heart of an effective EMS is an audit program that checks the company’s compliance with environmental requirements. In addition, audit privilege (in select states), voluntary self-disclosure, and the attorney-client privilege serve as very effective tools for managing those liabilities that may arise during auditing a well-developed program. Of course, these latter tools are effective only if the auditing program is properly structured and properly managed. EPA and some states also provide varying degrees of immunity for environmental violations that are voluntarily disclosed in writing by the company. However, self-disclosure laws and policies typically prescribe stringent requirements for parties seeking to take advantage of them. For example: U.S. EPA has recently extended the time period in which to provide full written self-disclosure to 21 days. However, U.S. EPA’s revised Self-Disclosure guidance also addresses when a company obtains knowledge of a violation for purposes of triggering the 21-day clock and specifically extends the knowledge requirement to include the company’s agents and consultants. This expansion increases the difficulty companies may have in clearly defining and managing when they obtained knowledge. The Andacollo gold mine is located near the small town of Andacollo, Chile (population 14,000) in the fourth region. It is approximately 35 miles by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena, and Santiago lies about 300 miles to the south (see map.) Site elevation varies between 3300 feet and 4200 feet. The climate at the site is moderate but arid, with an average annual rainfall of only five inches. Because there is little rain, and the temperature varies only a few degrees (57"F to 75°F); there are no freezing, solution dilution, or pad saturation problems. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

The tide has turned. Developments in China that have continued to unfold over the last four years or so have now reached a point where the supply market dynamics of certain industrial minerals have changed significantly. No more is this sea change better exemplified than by the supply market for magnesite, and in particular, its processed derivative grades of dead burned magnesia (DBM), caustic calcined magnesia (CCM), and fused magnesia (FM). But what has compounded the barrage of influencing factors impacting this sector, which include the widespread effects of energy and freight cost increases, has been rising demand from certain end use markets. Clearly, the magnesia market is experiencing bittersweet conditions. But those western producers which have monitored and responded to this market transformation, stand to taste success in the near and medium future. REVOLUTION IN WORLD SUPPLY STATUS In essence, while China, as host to a wealth of magnesite resources in Liaoning province, remains a huge producer of magnesia, its supply dominance on the global magnesia market has been considerably weakened. In future, it will mainly aim to supply domestic, and to some extent east Asian markets. Magnesia consumers outside China are now scrabbling for alternative, ?western? sources of supply. At the same time, magnesia producers outside China that weathered the storm of low cost Chinese DBM and FM imports flooding their regional markets for the last 20 years (and many did not), are busy investing in production capacity increases to meet not just demand from falling Chinese supply, but also demand from end use markets which is picking up. And it is not just a matter of expanding capacity of existing magnesia product lines. In the face of plentiful lower cost DBM and FM substitutes from China over the last couple of decades, many western magnesia producers started to switch their focus to the non-refractory markets (eg. environmental, specialities) which promised lucrative opportunities (and still do) and crucially, a lessening of sales revenue dependence on the DBM refractories market. Now we have the likes of Baymag (Canada), Bommag (Serbia/Turkey), and Kumas (Turkey) not only expanding capacities but seriously considering diversifying into DBM and FM production. Perhaps DSP (Israel), having ceased its famous high purity DBM activity as recently as 2005, might even reconsider a return to the ?other side?. But it?s not all DBM and FM. The CCM and specialities markets are also demanding a response, and so Baymag, DSP, Martin Marietta (USA), Premier Chemicals (USA), Qmag (Australia), MGR (Spain), and Magnifin (Austria) are also stepping up to the market on the non-refractory side. From most accounts, the situation with regard to Chinese supply has been described as one of turmoil, with prices rising, leading to improving opportunities for western producers. The majors are conducting huge expansion programmes, such as Qmag, Magnezit (Russia), and the new look Magnesita (Brazil). Even smaller players such as Causmag (Australia) and Dalmia (India) are looking to increase production. In short, the western magnesia supply sector is witnessing a landmark event in capacity investment and market share penetration as China?s previously dominant role begins to weaken (for a review of western capacity expansions see Industrial Minerals, September 2008, p.28). MERGER & ACQUISITION ACTIVITY Another response of course has been a raft of mergers and acquisitions in order to secure resources and supply outside China. These have included private equity groups taking over Magnesita and Qmag; Imerys entering the FM business through UCM; Peñoles further consolidating the electrical grade FM market by acquiring Minco; Martin Marietta acquiring Morton Salt?s Specialty Magnesia Group; Bomex entering the market through Calmag (now Bommag); LWB acquiring Magnesita; and Magnezit?s pursuit of Slovakian magnesia, with Slovmag aboard while currently wooing SMZ. Interestingly, RHI has gone ?the other way?, and has invested in a state of the art joint venture operation at Dashiqiao, Liaoning, with which it aims to secure high quality feedstock for its Chinese refractory plants. Tata Refractories Ltd has announced intentions to follow suit, and other majors, such as Qmag are known to be interested in seeking options. Naturally, there is now renewed interest from several parties in the idled 50,000 tpa DBM/10,000 CCM Jormag facility, Jordan, and the commercially undeveloped Zhargat project, Saudi Arabia. Elsewhere, there will no doubt be suitors for stakes in SMZ, in Slovakia, and Magnohrom, in Serbia, whose respective ownerships are on the block. THE ?CHINA FACTOR? The ?China factor? has been key to magnesia?s market change, and has significantly influenced prices and availability of material to global markets. Resources & production China hosts the largest share of the world?s magnesite deposits, accounting for 26% or 3,319m. tonnes of predominantly sparry magnesite (followed by North Korea, 24%, and Russia, 22%; Wilson 2008). China accounts for 44% of total world magnesite mined (19m. tonnes in 2007) and 50% of the total world magnesia produced (8.2m. tonnes CCM, DBM, FM; Wilson 2008). Russia follows China at 13% of magnesia supply, illustrating China?s dominance of magnesia production. Apart from one producer in Shandong province, central eastern China, the country?s magnesite resources and production are concentrated around the cities of Haicheng and Dashiqiao in Liaoning province, north-east China. Although there are also producers in the Xiuyan district of south-east Liaoning, the Haicheng-Dashiqiao Magnesite Belt hosts the majority of producers. In total these may number 200-300 of large,

Sixteen companies mined fuller’s earth in 11 states during 2004. Production during 2004, based on a preliminary survey of fuller’s earth producers, was 3.96 Mt (4.3million st) valued at $340 million. This compared with3.6 Mt (3.9 million st) during 2003, valued at $346 million. The 3.96 Mt (4.3 million st) probably includes some crude clay tonnage. And production of finished product probably was closer to 3.2 Mt (3.5 million st) in 2004. Georgia was the leading producer state of attapulgite-type fuller’s earth, followed by Florida. Georgia also was the leading producer state for montmorillonite-type fuller’s earth. It was followed, in descending order, by Mississippi, Missouri, Florida, Virginia, Illinois, California, Tennessee, Kansas and Texas.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the 12th MPD Student Poster Contest on March 2, 2022, during the MINEXCHANGE 2022 SME Annual Conference & Expo. The event showcased the work of 32 graduate and undergraduate students from U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when the students submitted one‐page abstracts for judging. In February, they prepared and presented posters that explained their research, and each student had five minutes to explain their research to a panel of judges during the conference. Recognizing the students’ efforts in working hard on their research topics and setting aside time to complete the necessary steps to enter the poster contest, the MPD provides monetary rewards to all participants. For graduate students, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, and third through seventh places $200 each, and for undergraduate students, first place receives $1,000 and second place $500. The main authors of nonplacing entries receive $125 each. Participation in the contest includes a free ticket to the MPD Luncheon, where the winners are announced.

The authors previously had developed a methodology that combines injury and citation measures into an overall mine safety performance evaluation tool, called the Safe Performance Index (SPI). It can be easily adopted by mine operators to monitor trends in their injury and citation experiences as a risk assessment method. In this paper, six normalized safety measures and the SPI are used to evaluate the risk that existed at mines in the two years preceding the occurrence of a fatality. The percentage of mines is given for which the risk was high or where trends of some of the safety measures indicated moderate risk. In 50% of the mines, this mine safety performance tracking method could have been helpful to the companies, state agency, or MSHA in recognizing and addressing emerging problems with actions that may have been able to prevent high-risk conditions, the fatality, and/or other serious injuries. The approach would have given scrutiny to the risk for mines that encompassed 74% of the fatalities during 2007-2010.

As part vi the development of the Coal Quality Expert (CQRN) --a computer program capable of predicting the impacts of coal quality on power plant performance, costs, and emissions control--several nationally important coals are being characterized to augment the coal quality database associated with the software. The project is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) under the Clean coal Technology Program. Since 1989, CQ Inc. (a subsidiary of EPRI) has characterized seven bituminous coals from Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky and Oklahoma and six sub-bituminous coals from the Powder River Basin (PRB) in Montana and Wyoming. Coals from the PRB region--being burned more frequently in Midwestern and southern power plants to reduce emissions of sulfur oxide compounds--can sometimes contain significant concentrations of potentially toxic elements. Although no limits were imposed on air toxics emissions from fossil-fuel fired utilities by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, future regulations may be implemented at the conclusion of Federally-mandated emissions studies. One possible result is that any increased utilization of coals, including those from the PRB, may depend on the potential for removing toxic trace elements prior to combustion.

Brazil is a major mineral and metal producer, has magnificent fauna and flora, and superb architecture. In 1693 gold was discovered in Ouro Preto and Brazil produced about half of the world's gold. In 1726 diamond was discovered in the region of Tijuco in the Province of Minas Gerais, 150 km east of Bello Horizonte. The country became independence from Portugal in 1822 as the Brazilian Empire. In 1876, an Englishman succeeded in obtaining from the Amazon region seeds of rubber trees and secretly transferred them to England, where they were planted in the royal gardens at Kew. Some of the seedlings which spouted were sent to Ceylon and Singapore. Thus, began the rubber industry in the East. Today, Brazil is the largest producer of niobium, and produces a large number of other metals. The Mineral Research Center in Rio de Janeiro is the countries main Government establishment for mineral research. The country has been a republic since 1889 with its capital in Brazilia.

Safe and successful mine closure represents a fundamental work element that needs to accommodate the geochemical conditions existing at the completion of the mining and ore processing effort. Given the interests in limiting costs and time associated with mine closure efforts enhanced prior understanding of the geochemical conditions likely to exist upon exhaustion of the economic reserves can provide important benefits. The purpose of this paper is to document the benefits associated with geochemical modeling and understanding how the ore formation process may impact mine closure efforts, using one ore deposit type as an example. Specifically, this paper will emphasize the geochemical processes leading to the formation of sandstone-hosted uranium roll-type deposits and how the resultant concentrations and distributions of ore and gangue phases need to be incorporated into understanding the geochemical conditions projected to exist at the end of mineral recovery efforts. The paper will describe the evolution of geochemical conditions leading to ore body formation and the geochemical effects induced by open pit mining and how these may be used to understand both the geochemical controls and constraints on residual mine water. In addition, a discussion will be provided on how these conditions may be simulated by solution equilibria and kinetic modeling to develop optimum approaches to achieve applicable closure standards. This paper will also discuss specific augmentations to existing industry standard solution equilibria and kinetic models and associated thermodynamic databases to maximize the predictive accuracy of the geochemical modeling results. The benefits of understanding the electrochemically reactive behavior of uranium and associated gangue phases and incorporating this behavior into mine closure efforts will be presented. The culmination of the benefits of the geochemical modeling will ultimately be the development of a sustainable approach to uranium mine closure that is based upon an engineered environment designed to return the ore body to stable geochemical conditions.

The Chino Mines Company, a Kennecott-Mitsubishi partnership, located in Hurley, New Mexico, recently completed a $405 million modernization of its mine, concentrator, and smelter facilities. The mine/ concentrator modernization commenced in 1980 and the smelter modernization began during 1982. Modernization of the mine and concentrator facilities involved increasing the mining rate from 98 kt/d (108,000 stpd) to 152.2 kt/d (167,800 stpd). Ore mining was designed to increase production from 20.2 kt/d (22,300 stpd) to 34.0 kt/d (37,500 stpd). A new concentrator was constructed near the mine using semi-autogenous grinding. The new smelter uses the INCO flash smelting process, increasing capacity by 40.8 kt/a (45,000 stpy) to 99.8 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of salable copper.

The Cal-Sag Relief Sewer is a 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in.) diameter 9.1 km (5.7 mile) rock tunnel bored in dolomite for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. Included in the project are 18 shafts varying in depth free 70 m (230 ft) to 41 m (135 ft). This paper discusses how Healy/Vanessa reduced costs by eliminating conventional hand excavation by hoisting muck from a high production Robbins TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) through small diameter drilled shafts and using a trailing rail-utility backup system.

The Non-Time Critical Forest service CERCLA Action at Mansfield Canyon, Santa Cruz County, Arizona designated previous locators of unpatented mining claims as owners/operators of the Hazardous Waste Facility, retroactively liable for all reclamation costs including reclamation of mines acquired by the Forest Service. The CERCLA Action is based on non-existent tailings, a non-existent permanent resident, inaccurate and unreliable data and did not review or consider prior USGS and USBM data. The consequences of the Forest Service action include(1) reduced exploration, (2) loss of credibility, (3)public disillusionment and distrust.

Management of mine and tailings reclamation activities by surface mining oil sands operations in Alberta, Canada is experiencing increased national and international attention. Of particular concern is the ability of existing mines to execute and fund reclamation activities. Concern stems from a lack of demonstrated tailings reclamation technologies, perceptions of a poor track-record of reclamation activity by industry, and a lack of transparency with respect to the potential cost of reclamation activities relative to the monies secured in Alberta?s Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF). Limited information is publicly available regarding reclamation costs and technologies. Available data typically comes from disparate sources. This paper examines the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) liabilities, the Province of Alberta?sEPSF, and published data relating to reclamation costs.Issues relating to current liability funding are introduced.

Four companies mined ball call in four states in 2009, H.C. Spinks Clay Co. Inc. (owned by Lhoist Group), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co. (owned by Imerys Group), Old Hickory Clay Co. and Unimin Corp. Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 820 kt (904,000 st) with an estimated value of $39.4 million. That was a 15-percent decrease in tonnage from 967 Mt (1.1 mil-lion st) with a value of $44.3 million that was produced in 2008. Land access and tenure certainty for exploration and mine development is absolutely critical to the foundation of a healthy, sustainable and environmentally-sound mineral exploration and mining sector. Without certainty, mineral exploration will be severely eroded, resulting in reduced possibility of discovering and developing new mines. The development of positive relationships based on a shared commitment of understanding, mutual respect and trust by First Nations and the mineral sector can provide this increased business certainty and social and economic benefits for local First Nations. As a sector, we face many challenges in regard to building relationships with First Nations. The root solution to addressing these challenges lies in recognizing and understanding the unique cultural differences that exist between indigenous people and the business community. From the Canadian perspective, the First Nations culture differs vastly from non-Aboriginal culture. It is equally as imperative that cultural differences be acknowledged and respected at home as they are when seeking business opportunities in other countries. The traditional “business” approaches and relationships that one understands and incorporates with one’s contractors, legal counsel, investors and Board are generally not be the best approach for the introductory and subsequent meetings with indigenous peoples. This paper is written from the perspective of my experiences accumulated over the past ten years, first as Manager of Aboriginal Affairs for one of the largest forest companies in British Columbia and now, as President and CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC). My opinions are not necessarily endorsed by AME BC. Before the gritty issues of consultation and benefit sharing are dealt with, it is worthwhile to clear up the confusion surrounding terminology. “Indigenous Peoples” is used in a global context; “Aboriginal Peoples” is used in the Canadian context therefore includes Métis, Inuit and First Nations Peoples. The term “First Nations”, in the context of British Columbia, perhaps has its roots in the fact that treaties have largely not been settled. Therefore it is important to reaffirm that British Columbia was not discovered. First Nations have resided in British Columbia since time immemorial.
