Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self aerated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A 0.8 m3 model is considered. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Because of the lack of circumferential periodicity in this machine, the entire machine is modeled and unsteady simulations are conducted in the whole volume of the bulb. Uniform bubble diameter is specified, and the effects of bubble diameter are determined by conducting simulations for three diameters of 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mm. The unsteady air flow rate through the machine is predicted as an outcome of the simulations. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different parts of the machine are presented and discussed.

Your assessment of the minerals business. I would first like to express our profound sadness and sincere condolences to the families of the miners who lost their lives in recent mine mishaps particularly in West Virginia, and other locations. Any loss is unacceptable. It is time to review and, if required, re-establish a rigorous health and safety agenda in the mines. It must involve a review of health and safety regulations. And innovative training methods for sensing, awareness and mitigation of health and safety hazards must be developed. As far as the minerals business is concerned, I am excited about the outlook for mining. Over the last 20 years, global demand for minerals has closely mirrored the growth of the gross domestic product. Minerals re-main a major part of the world’s economic foundation. And that will continue to be the case. It is no surprise that the fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends. Globally, mining has been strong — thanks to the explosive economic growth in Asia. The U.S. mining industry has performed reasonably well, with notable strength in the metals, coal and construction and aggregate areas and with some softness in the industrial minerals sector.

Following a disaster in a mine, it is important to understand the state of the mine damage immediately with limited information. Computational fluid dynamics can be used to simulate and ascertain information about the state of ventilation controls inside a mine. This paper describes a simulation of tracer gas distribution in an experimental mine with the ventilation controls in various states. Tracer gas measurements were taken in the lab experimental apparatus, and used to validate the numerical model. The distribution of the tracer gas, together with the ventilation status, was analyzed to understand how the damage to the ventilation system related to the distribution of tracer gases. This study will be used in future research in real mine measurements to compare collected and simulated profiles and determine whether damage to the ventilation system has been incurred during an emergency situation, the nature of the damage and the general location of the damage.

The introduction of computer technology to the mining industry has produced many benefits for the mining engineer. The most significant is the dramatic increase in productivity realized by the individual user. This is important during times of competitive market conditions. Software for the minerals and energy industries has evolved substantially over the past decade. But even today it remains difficult to find a system that features the flexibility and integration capabilities to effectively (and cost-effectively) handle the needs of professionals in each phase of the mining industry - from exploration to reclamation. Several national software developers are now addressing this challenge. One Denver-based company, MINEsoft Ltd., offers a software package that is currently being used in each phase of the mining industry. The basic technology used in MINEsoft's database management system was developed in the 1960s. But during these early years of the computer industry, most of the technology was available only on mainframe computers, and then only as separate entities. MINEsoft's system unifies these various systems in one package that can be used on most computers manufactured today. Database Management System TECHBASE is a flexible, integrated database management system designed specifically for technical applications. The system features a database manager with no practical limit to the amount of data it can store, retrieve, and manipulate, according to the company. TECHBASE in¬cludes Applications Packages (TAPs) designed to meet the needs of professionals in a host of industries. Clients use the TECH BASE system to prepare many reports, including important EPA information. The package reduces data to a manageable level and enables users to increase productivity with a smaller staff. Mining engineers no longer need to do things by hand. What used to be a day's work can be accomplished in an hour or two. Exploration "Using the TECHBASE system to generate maps has probably saved us the expense of three or four draftsmen," says Ralph Fitch, regional manager and senior staff geologist with Chevron Resources in Portland, ME. "The system has great flexibility. You can treat it much like a spreadsheet. If you are halfway through with a particular project, the system allows you to add fields and calculations with ease but without starting over." Fitch uses TECHBASE for the "straightforward" plotting of results and generation of geochemical and geophysical profiles. "In exploration," he says, "these are the two key elements ... the generation of maps and data profiles. The system allows you to plot as many elements and variables in these areas that you like." Newmont?s Twin Creeks Mine, located in northern Nevada, is producing gold ore from surface mining operations. The ore is currently processed at three different on site facilities depending on the ore type and the grade. The processing facilities operate under stringent geochemical blending constraints that must be met from mine ore deliveries and off site sourced ore. To analyze various strategic options, the technical team utilizes the mathematical optimization approach. However, due to the size and the complexity of the operation, there are unique challenges in optimizing life of mine production scheduling. This paper describes those challenges and the methodology developed to take advantage of different scheduling software systems that effectively compensate each other and result in reasonable guidance. The paper also describes how those scheduling results are reflected in detailed mine plan and cost estimate work.

The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. Although production operations at mines, representing the extraction and removal of the mined material, often appear to receive the greatest amount of attention, the emphasis given to auxiliary operations is continually increasing. This is due to the changing economic, social, and environmental climate in which modern mines must operate. Auxiliary operations can best be described as those activities that are not directly related to the extraction and removal of the mined material, but must receive proper attention if recovery is to take place in a safe, efficient, and socially responsible manner. In fact, certain mining auxiliary operations, such as strata control and ventilation, are considered to be of such importance that they warrant separate sections in this Handbook. Judging from a mine-personnel standpoint, it is not uncommon for a mine to hire the same number or more individuals responsible for auxiliary operations as the number assigned to production.

This paper is concerned with mineral policy in Ireland and how it might be improved to encourage more exploration and investment in mining in the country. The approach is to first outline the main desirable characteristics of a comprehensive national mineral policy document. This aspirational document is then used to assess the current regulatory, legislative and fiscal frameworks for mining in Ireland. The analysis also contains a brief account of the history, structure and characteristics of the mining industry in Ireland. The main focus of the paper is to identify those aspects of the existing framework that erode Ireland’s attractiveness to mineral investment and to suggest policy improvements.

On Friday, May 27, 1983 at about 6 p.m., an avalanche occurred at the Revenue-Virginius Mine. Six mine personnel and two contract diamond drillers were trapped when the avalanche covered and blocked the portal, the only access into the mine. The San Juan Mountain Range in southwestern Colorado is an old volcanic caldera. It has dikes and other intrusions, many of which are mineralized with sulfide ores rich in silver, gold, lead, zinc and copper. Several peaks rise above 4,260 m (14,000 ft) and the district has been the location of avalanches dating back to prehistoric times. This is evidenced by the numerous snow-slide chutes that are infamous enough to be named on topographic maps.

The global bentonite industry is a dynamic market balancing a range of end uses with an ever growing number of bentonite producers. In addition, markets in developed countries are elevating the level of detail and transparency for materials reporting in programs, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restrictions of Chemicals (REACH) program in the European Union. Bentonite is impacted by programs of this nature. The majority of the bentonite products sold around the world are sodium bentonites. These sodium bentonites consist either of natural sodium bentonites, or naturally occurring bentonite dominated by divalent interlayer cations (Ca+2 andMg+2) subsequently exchanged with sodium cation. The latter variety is often called “sodium-activated“, or “soda-ash treated” bentonite. Once exchanged with sodium, these bentonites are often difficult to distinguish from natural sodium bentonites using common commercial testing protocols. Due to their similar colloidal and bulk chemical properties; the lack of test procedures designed specifically to identify this product feature; and the failure to completely or effectively explain their differences, sodium-activated bentonite is often considered to be identical to natural sodium bentonite in the industry. This article defines both general types of sodium bentonite and presents a technique that could serve the industry as a tool to confirm the variety of sodium bentonite in question. Specifically, geochemical properties such as carbon (C13/C12) and oxygen (O18/O16) isotopic ratios can distinguish activated, even slightly activated bentonites, from bentonites not introduced to additional sodium during manufacture.

Most citizens take it for granted, but minerals produced in the mines of the western United States, including Colorado, are crucial to nation’s standard of living and quality of life, said Colorado’s Gov. Bill Owens in his welcoming remarks at the 106th National Western Mining Conference. The conference, which was organized by the Colorado Mining Association (CMA), was held Feb. 4-6, 2004, in Denver. Attendance was425, up substantially from last year’s meeting. The meeting included the CMA annual membership meeting as well as the CMA chairman’s and president’s reports. The meeting also included awards presentations in which companies were recognized for their efforts in pollution prevention, health and safety, and reclamation. The conference also included a tradeshow.

Groundwater inflows during construction pose one of the greatest risks to the successful completion of tunnel projects. Inflows can result in safety concerns, difficulty in mining and ground support, impact sensitive environmental habitats, create surface settlement and increase costs. Adequately planned pre-excavation grouting programs benefit both the Owner and Contractor in reducing risks and controlling project costs and potential schedule delays. This paper outlines strategic guidelines for assessment of site conditions for pre-excavation grouting hard rock tunnels. It also describes the design of pre-excavation grouting programs with respect to project requirements.

The US economy and the demand for nonfuel minerals grew at lower rates in 1995 than in 1994. Demand for major metals, such as aluminum, copper and steel, was mixed but relatively stable. The building industry, including highway construction, helped to support modest overall growth in demand for industrial minerals. The value of processed materials of nonfuel mineral origin produced in the United States during 1995 was estimated to be $395 billion, an increase of almost 10%compared with 1994 (Fig. 1). The estimated value of US raw nonfuel minerals production during 1995 was $38billion, about 7% more than in 1994. The value of US minerals production has increased in 30 of the last 35years.

Risk management is an established loss-control methodology that has been applied successfully in many industries. Recently, interest in this structured approach has grown in the mining industry. The main objective of this research was to develop a risk-assessment process, which is a part of risk management, that can be used by the U.S. mining industry to more thoroughly characterize risks associated with haul truck-related fatalities. The assessment is based on historical data obtained from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) investigation reports, which includes 113 fatal incidents that occurred from 1995 through 2006. The risk-assessment process used in this research involves the following basic steps: identification of the risks, risk analysis and risk evaluation. The preliminary hazard assessment (PHA) method is used in identifying and quantifying risks. Risk levels are then developed using a pre-established risk matrix that ranks them according to probability and severity. The resulting assigned risk value can then be used to prioritize control strategies. This paper is a part of a detailed study on risk assessment for equipment-related fatalities in mining sponsored by the Western U.S. Mining Safety and Health Training and Translation Center.

Where space is limited, as it is throughout most of the northeastern United States, new construction either takes place high above street level, or below it. In Lower Manhattan, NY both kinds of expansion can be found in abundance. That is good news for the nearly 200 attendees at the George A. Fox Conference, presented by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, on Jan. 30. Among the many projects taking place in Lower Manhattan?s massive trans-formation process, are expansions to the city?s vast underground network of subways and other tunnels. ?New Yorkers either live on the ground or below it,? said keynote speaker Charles J. Maikish while explaining how an attempt to build above street level walkways never caught on in the city. Maikish is the executive director of the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center. His job is to oversee the $22 billion project that will transform the island by 2010. From the construction of Freedom Tower at the site of the fallen World Trade Center buildings, to the expansion of the Second Avenue Subway, the extension of the East Side Access, No. 7 line, the new trans-Hudson line and numerous waterway tunnel expansions, including City Water Tunnel No. 3, the task Maikish is charged with is a huge one. He is primarily responsible for coordinating the scheduling and staging of the overall rebuilding plan, along with the day-to-day coordination of construction work down-town. He places particular focus on mitigating impacts on the environment and mobility, maintaining and improving access and alleviating congestion of any kind related to construction. At the time of the Fox Conference, there were 59 projects under way in Manhattan. All of those projects need things like concrete and steel delivered to sites in very tight working environments. And some need the equipment in even tighter spaces. ?This is not just about the recovery of Lower Manhat-tan (from the 2001 terrorist attacks) but this is a plan to restore it and to maintain its integrity,? said Maikish. ?I think that is the appropriate response to the terrorist attacks.? When Freedom Tower is completed, it will stand 541 m (1,776 ft) about the skyline. That will be a strong statement to the world about America?s strength. But it is the work that takes place much lower that was of interest to the conference attendees. On this respect, Maikish said Manhattan?s efforts below ground aim to provide relief to the city?s street level congestion and to make sure Manhattan ? already essential to the economy of the United States and the world ? stays current by upgrading the existing telecommunications and technological network while also allowing room for growth in that area.

Industrial minerals have always enjoyed an important share in the technological growth of any country in the world. Today, extraction and trading of industrial minerals has expanded, but is also subject to stricter environmental guidelines. This paper presents the current status as well as the growth potential in the exploitation of industrial minerals in the countries of the south eastern European region, i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, F.Y.R.O.M., Greece, Italy, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia and Turkey. More specifically, annual production figures per country are presented for1992-1998. These figures are compared to each other and, where applicable, to world production figures. Trading of industrial minerals from these countries to Europe and the world and its effect to the local economies is also evaluated were such data is available.

This study predicts the level of smoke that miners might meet while trying to escape a coal mine fire and describes how smoke would impede their safe escape. For this study, the authors assumed that miners exit through an escapeway adjacent to the burning entry, that some air would leak from the burning entry to the escapeway. The following conclusions were made: • A very low amount of air leakage to the escapeway can produce a critical level of visual obscurity from smoke. This shows that intake airways may be as susceptible to smoke visibility problems as return airways. • This critical level of smoke obscurity is reached much before a critical level of carbon monoxide is reached. • Small fires can cause a severe sensory irritation that further limits vision. Thus, reliable eye protection is very important. These results show that methods to guide miners through dense smoke will contribute greatly to saving lives during mine fires.

Surface properties of minerals could be modified selectively and very specifically by adsorption -desorption (dissolution) processes. This requires a monitoring and control of the outermost surface layer at a molecular and atomic level. The nature and structure of self-assembled submonolayers and monolayers at the interface of minerals were studied by infrared reflection spectroscopy. The external reflection spectra of the adsorbed monolayers on any type of minerals: transparent, opaque or non-transparent, recorded at different angles of incidence and for two polarizations are an excellent source of information about the nature and surface distribution of the adsorbed species. The developed method allows to obtain detailed information at a molecular level about the adsorbed surface species. By combination of the simulated and experimental data, the qualitative description of the adsorbed species as well as quantitative evaluation of orientation and the thickness of the adsorption layers were obtained. This fundamental knowledge allows to determine the mechanisms of surface phenomena which govern selective separations. Examples of different surfactant - mineral systems and industrial applications will be discussed.

Computer models of metallurgical circuits are extensively utilised in design, and prediction of overall plant separation performance. As always, in the final optimised flowsheet design there is a compromise between the recovery of values and grade of the circuit output. This paper mathematically examines various circuit options for the generation of a heavy mineral concentrate from a generic mineral sands wet concentrator plant. Based on data derived from testwork, any particular mineral sand has a unique release curve describing the separation performance of the heavy mineral suite. Models are constructed that combine particular stage output streams as feed to other stages in various configurations. The ramifications of each option are discussed and reasons why one particular option is selected over the others examined.

U.S. mines are among the most efficient, productive and safest in the world. Much of that efficiency is due to the high-technology equipment and processes available to the industry. The U.S. mining industry can produce more material now with fewer people than it could a few decades ago. And that material can be produced more safely. However, the workforce is growing older and fewer young people are filling the holes created by retirements. Even though mining is one of the highest paid occupations in the United States, young people believe they can find jobs that pay almost as well without the risks and the often remote locations associated with mines.
